Jersey Electricity enables apprentices to train on the low carbon, electric systems of the future Jersey Electricity has invested in skills for the future by providing Highlands College apprentices with four new training bays to help Jersey’s plumbers and electricians of tomorrow. The two main bays feature an electric boiler and hot water cylinder, the second features a complete air source heat pump installation. In a separate area is a high efficiency electric storage heater and a smart panel heater. All the equipment has been been kindly donated by JE’s Energy Solutions partners Dimplex, Vaillant and the Electric Heating Company and has been installed by JEBS’ (Jersey Electricity’s Building Services) skilled technicians. Norry Murray, Plumbing and Electrical Lecturer at Highlands, said the new training facilities would benefit over 50 apprentices a year. ‘We currently have 10 apprentices studying City & Guilds Level 3 Plumbing Diploma and 20 on Level 2. On top of these day release apprentices, we have another 22 full-time

students. Ages range from 16 to mid-forties, with some full-time apprentices on the Advanced to Work Scheme, the Statesfunded Tracker programme and lads who are looking to change career and get a trade. We also have links with schools through their 14-16 Diploma in Construction programme. ‘We are very grateful to Jersey Electricity Energy Solutions, JEBS and their suppliers for providing these new training facilities. They are like complete home installations and it is far better to get hands-on practical experience than just looking at equipment in text books.’

Variety Set Sights On Sensory Pool Variety - the Children’s Charity of Jersey have embarked on an ambitious fundraising mission to build a sensory pool at Oakwell Short Break Centre in St Brelade. The pool will benefit Jersey’s children with additional needs and their families. The project intends to transform the existing Oakwell Hydrotherapy Pool into a full sensory environment. The target is to raise £25,000 for the equipment and a further £25,000 for its upkeep. The charity is calling on the generosity of Islander’s to help them reach the total. The Jersey sensory pool project is the chosen beneficiary of the Variety World Conference, which will be held in Jersey for the first time this year. The conference will see over 200 delegates, celebrities and charity stalwarts from 13 countries come to Jersey this month. The conference will provide many fundraising opportunities, none more so than the Gala Dinner which will be held at the RJAHS on Saturday 30th April. Oakwell is a short break facility, run by the Health and Social Services Department, specialising in personalised short breaks for children and young people with a range of additional needs, to include intellectual disability, physical disability, sensory impairments or complex health care needs. The Centre has long been a beneficiary

of Variety Jersey; Oakwell was first acquired and refurbished by the charity in 1987. It was then donated to the States of Jersey with the proviso that the building was used to support children with additional needs. Over the years Variety the Children’s Charity of Jersey have continued to fundraise for the centre delivering a wheelchairfriendly garden, two further bedrooms and the hydrotherapy pool. The pool is one of the few places that children and young adults can be free of support systems, braces and wheelchairs. The sensation of floating in warm water is liberating and can be used for relaxation, delivering therapy or for stimulation and exercise. The addition of all the sensory equipment such as

sound systems, interactive LED lighting and effects projectors would enhance the experience and provide an interactive environment to educate too. The equipment for the pool will be provided by SpaceKraft; the company are leaders in providing sensory solutions for special needs. Currently Oakwell supports 14 children who can all access the pool. The pool is also used by an early years playgroup, individual families who book sessions with their child and by young adults with physical disabilities. It’s hoped that the sensory additions will make the pool a resource that will attract a wider array of children and young people with additional needs.

The agreement means the supplier will continue to operate the island's fuel terminal. But competitor ATF Fuels said there should have been an open tendering process. The minister responsible for the deal defended the agreement,

saying renewing the lease was the best way to secure safe fuel supplies to the island. Deputy Eddie Noel said putting the contract out to tender would have involved the States buying the whole plant. The machinery at the fuel terminal is privately-owned, but it is on public land leased from the States on a 10-year contract. ATF claimed it could have offered a better deal for the States than Rubis.

The Board invites applications, with a view to joining the Governing Body of Highlands College, from persons willing to contribute towards guiding and inspiring Jersey’s only Further & Higher Education College. This is an honorary position.

Deal between States and fuel supplier approved A deal between the States of Jersey and the fuel distributor, Rubis, has been approved in the Royal Court.

Governors’ Vacancies

In a letter, the company said: "The need to ensure a fuel supply to the island means that the incredibly valuable opportunity to acquire a new lease has been offered only to Rubis. There have been no serious attempts to engage with other potential operators." A spokesman at the fuel terminal said its charges were fair and it had followed the correct legal procedures in renewing the lease for the land.

We are aiming to develop an inclusive Board representing Jersey’s diverse community. The Governor’s role is giving advice and guidance, bringing their broader skills, experience and background to the Board’s work. Further information and an application form can be obtained from the Board Secretary Cathie Wright

In Brief

Jersey's high cost of living 'putting off doctors' Recruitment of medical staff in Jersey is being hampered by the high cost of living on the island, a report has said. The health and social services scrutiny panel said working conditions and staff contracts at Jersey General Hospital should improve. Chairman, Deputy Richard Renouf, said higher salaries would help attract more doctors and nurses to the island.

Wild About Jersey Islanders are invited to an event celebrating and informing people about Jersey’s wildlife. Wild About Jersey is a two-day conference and volunteer fair where people can meet and learn about organisations involved in protecting and conserving Jersey’s plant and animal life and discover how they can get involved. Across the world volunteers gather information vital to protecting and improving our environment, from spotting butterflies to identifying new galaxies, from counting birds to collecting worms. The event is offering participants volunteering opportunities to help protect Jersey’s natural environment. There is no cost for the event, and you can attend as little or as much as you like, however, as places are limited booking is essential and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Anyone interested in booking a space should do so by Friday 15 April. Contact Julia Meldrum on 441665 or email j.meldrum@gov.je for more details or to book a place.

Substantial Swimarathon Pay Out To Local Charities The money has been counted and this year’s Lions Club of Jersey Swimarathon has raised £138,130. Fifty percent of the money will go to the 10 main beneficiaries who support islanders living with either mental health issues or changes brought about by a brain related accident or illness. Sponsored by RBC Wealth Management for the 10th year, the Swimarathon took place at Les Quennevais 9-13 March and saw almost 4,000 people take part in Jersey’s longest running fundraising event. Lion Ian Barette, president of the Lions Club of Jersey, said: ‘We are always in awe at the amount of support the Swimarathon receives and once again Islanders have really got behind the event; through either donating or turning up and taking part in the five day annual event. We’re thrilled that such a significant sum of money raised, boosted by RBC Wealth Management’s lap donation, will be going to help such wonderful local charities.’

Chris Blampied, Head of Banking, RBC Wealth Management said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that in our 10th year of sponsoring the Swimarathon that such a fantastic sum has been raised. As one of the thousands of islanders who takes part, I know what an enjoyable and worthwhile event it is and by getting involved, we are all

making a substantial contribution to the local community. Well done to everyone who dug deep to support the swimmers and to the Lions Club of Jersey who do an incredible job each year in organising this remarkable event.’ Half of the funds raised from this year’s event will go to ten local

charities who support Islanders living with mental health issues or changes brought about by a brain related accident or illness and the other 50 percent will be devoted to providing local people nominated by these charities with free respite holidays and other Lions’ Club community service activities.

Pitt Street buildings gifted to The National Trust The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has gifted three iconic buildings in Pitt Street, St Helier to The National Trust for Jersey. The gift means that the much loved ‘Nipper the dog’ and HMV sign will be restored to its former glory. The National Trust for Jersey will now be able to sympathetically restore the buildings and preserve Jersey’s heritage for the enjoyment of islanders. The restoration of the Pitt Street buildings will be co-ordinated alongside the main Charing Cross development which includes a Premier Inn, a modern Cooperative store and a lettable retail unit on the corner of Pitt Street and King Street. The project is due to compete in Spring 2018.

Nursery Funding to change The Nursery Education Fund, which provides free nursery places for three-to four year olds, is being updated and the changes will include refocusing the funds to help families that most need assistance. Currently, almost every child in Jersey has their nursery education subsidised by the States when they are aged 3 to 4 and in the year before they start Reception at primary school. Irrespective of their income, all families can receive 20 hours of free nursery education for their child for 38 weeks in term time at a private commercial nursery. This accounts for £1.9 million of the Education Department’s budget annually. From September 2017 the Nursery Education Fund will be targeted for the first time so that children families with a household income of less than £75,000 will

receive the free places. The States spends £3,914 per child per year on the nursery places. Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said: “The Nursery Education Fund was introduced as a universal benefit – one that everyone automatically received regardless of their circumstances. We simply can’t afford to do this any more and the time is right to make sure our spending helps the most vulnerable children and has the maximum impact. This is perfectly in line with our commitment to the 1001 Days Agenda. “It is difficult, in the current financial circumstances, to justify giving this subsidy across the board to higher-earning families but we also need to protect the funding for those who would otherwise struggle to afford nursery education.”

We need your old computers! Call on local businesses and government departments to donate old machines to help improve the computer literacy of Island’s school children. A Jersey charity has come up with a novel way to boost the computer skills of Island schoolchildren at a fraction of the cost of a more orthodox approach. The White Knight Foundation has been recycling sets of old computers from local companies and installing the revitalised machines into Springfield Primary School. Charity trustee, Bill White, says: ‘we wanted to encourage computer learning from an early age to open up job opportunities in the future. It seems to me that computer work is ideal for a small Island as it can be performed anywhere and requires very little space.’ The Foundation teamed up with local law firm Voisin and trust company Volaw who recently invested in new computers for their staff. The companies gave Springfield Primary School 20 of their old machines after the data had been wiped. White Knight

then replaced the memories and hard drives and installed the Linux Education operating system. Further help was given on the design of a dedicated computer room, which has recently been completed. Sam Cooper, Springfield headmaster, commented: ‘the contribution of computers by Voisin and Volaw and the work done by White Knight is hugely appreciated. Recycling old

machines has had a magical effect. The computers are being used in the teaching of a variety of subjects and the children cannot wait for lessons to begin.’

White Knight urges any company or government department, which is considering new computers, to get in touch so that other schools can benefit from the old ones. Bill White can be reached on 07700 704677.

Health & Fitness

So is taxing Fizzy Drinks the answer? By Jersey “Boxing” Bean So Finance Minister, George Osborne has ruled that a tax would be imposed on sugary drinks, dependent upon the sugar content from 2018. He said the move was necessary to “do the right thing for the next generation” - which on current trends will otherwise see half of boys and almost three quarters of girls overweight or obese. It means a standard can of CocaCola - costing around 70 pence – would have an 8 pence tax placed on it, while a can of Sprite would have an additional levy of 6 pence. This is not new in other countries: In September 2011, the Health Minister of Ireland, Dr James Reilly, announced that he was considering introducing a sugar tax on sugarsweetened drinks. Strongly affected by diet-related diseases, Ireland counts notably more than 180 000 people with diabetes amongst its population. Denmark took it one

step further and placed it on all saturated fat foods in 2011; In 2012 Norway and Sweden placed this tax on drinks including energy drinks and chocolate : The aim? To raise funds for the health industry due to the increased demand on obesity issues. OF course every step helps... But will it STOP children and adults, buying sugary drinks??? Like any habit, and BELIEVE ME SUGAR IS FAR WORSE than you may think, it will take time to break! Education within schools and parenting groups, supermarkets and social media must all play a part in deterring people from purchasing products with significant sugar content. As you will see, it is far worse than Saturated Fats! Q. So what is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for sugar? A. World Health Organisation now state 5% of your daily calories i.e. SIX TEASPOONS OF SUGAR A DAY

OR 25 GRAMS. (For example one can of coke contains 39 grams of sugar and a standard latte contains up to 6 teaspoonful’s of sugar!) Q. What is the effect of eating too much sugar? 1. DENTAL DECAY 2. INSATIABLE HUNGER: Leptin Is a hormone which lets people know they are full; due to increased sugar/fructose/glucose, this leads to high degrees of leptin which can reduce your body’s sensitivity to the hormone and therefore produces weight gain. 3. WEIGHT GAIN: Sugary Foods are full of calories and do not satiate your hunger. 4. INSULIN RESISTANCE: Insulin is used to convert your food to energy; when insulin levels are high your body’s sensitivity to the hormone is reduced and glucose builds in the blood. Symptoms include fatigue, hunger, brain fog and high blood pressure. Its also associated with

extra weight around the middle. Unfortunately these symptoms are ignored until you gain full blown DIABETES. 5. DIABETES: The statistics are staggering as to the increase of Diabetes Type II in both women and men over the last ten years. Sugary drinks and increased portion size are huge factors as to the increase as well as the reduction of exercise. 6. OBESITY: Obesity is one of the most cited risks of excess sugar consumption. One can of fizzy drink a day can lead up to 15lbs of weight gain in each year! 7. LIVER FAILURE: High doses of sugar can make the liver go into overdrive which explains why FRUCTOSE is a “key player” in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where fat accumulates around the liver in the absence of alcohol abuse. 8. CANCER: Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled growth and multiplication of cells which is

regulated by INSULIN. As we have seen too much insulin is caused by increased sugar consumption. 9. KIDNEY DISEASE: Findings suggest that sugary drinks consumption may be associated with kidney damage. 10. HEART DISEASE: Recent studies are showing that its not Saturated Fat that’s the killer for heart disease, but in fact SUGAR! Whilst smoking and a sedentary life style have long been acknowledged as risk factors, conditions associated with excess sugar consumption are also known risk factors for heart disease. 11. ADDICTION: Sugar can cause an increased amount of DOPAMINE: it has been found that people who are susceptible to addiction can be strongly addicted to sugar and other junk food. So please do yourself a favour, REDUCE SUGAR INTAKE TODAY!

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BOXING On Saturday 9th April at the RJA&HS, Trinity approximately 24 people will step into the boxing ring – many for the very first time. LH Fitness will commence the White Collar season by putting on their 7th show; this event will be raising funds for SILKWORTH CHARITY GROUP. Silkworth Charity Group was set up to help those who have been affected by alcohol and drug addiction and provides the only residential rehabilitation unit in the Channel Islands. Dave Lund and Ben Harding met each other in 2001 when Ben came over from Swindon and sparred against Leonis and their friendship has grown from there. Both of them have worked their way up the rankings to no 1 and no 5 in the country and have sparred against the likes of David Haye, Clinton Woods and Mike Perez. Not many boxing coaches can say that! Having initially sought premises in New Street and then latterly moving to Journeaux street, LH FITNESS moved from strength to strength and with the help of their sponsors, FUTURE FINANCE, expanded their premises to not only include two boxing rings but also a weight training room. So back to the boxing – 12 weeks on and a mixture of men and women “wannabes” have taken the plunge and launched on one of the hardest fitness campaigns of their life! Giving up alcohol and foodly pleasures, to replace with a minimum of 3 training sessions

a week plus for many, learning the techniques of how to box. Noone can tell you what it feels like to leave the changing room and be escorted along the corridor of what seemingly looks like an agricultural hall, and then to wait at the entrance of what surely feels like the biggest stage you will ever step foot on! The ring is set – 18 foot square – the lights are dimmed, 750 people are sitting and standing at tables around the ring... Waiting... The opening notes of the music which you have chosen starts to play… The nerves now feel unbearable as you can hear your supporters chanting your name... And then you start to walk to the ring. Losing yourself in the music, you realise this is IT – the energy is pumping round your body; glancing at faces in the crowd but not able to recognise anyone. Then you enter the ring. The opponent is on their way in now - you stand fixedly staring at Ben and Dave whilst they give you your last instructions. Suddenly the referee is calling you to the centre of the ring and you are staring face to face with your competitor and you realise THIS IS REAL! The bell rings and you then face the longest two minutes of your life - not just once, but three times! However, whether the ref lifts your arm in victory or not, the personal feeling of accomplishment is surreal. One of the fighters who will be feeling this on Saturday 9th April is Jason Wyse, the CEO of

“The nerves now feel unbearable as you can hear your supporters chanting your name... And then you start to walk to the ring.” SILKWORTH CHARITY GROUP. He has undertaken marathons and yet in his own words, he has never experienced “anything like this before”! His fitness is great – so why after 3 minutes does he “feel like my heart is about to explode!” It takes a brave man/ woman to walk into the ring and

everyone has their own reasons in undertaking this mission. However for Jason it is to raise awareness for SILKWORTH and to draw attention to the fact that like many charities in Jersey, they have had their funding slashed due to budget tightening measures and now have to find the additional funds

from donations and sponsorship. If you would like to join in the nights fun or you would like to find out more about boxing/boxing fitness in general, please check out facebook LH FITNESS STUDIO or call Ben Harding on 07700 722608.

GET WAISTED! Torch your spare tyre and tighten up those stomach muscles in 5 moves... Most core exercises are done lying down and only challenge your abs and lower back. Exercises that work from your core from a standing, lunging or seated position provide a different type of stimulus involving other muscle groups and give you a much more overall strength.

1. KETTLEBELL SQUAT (or use a medicine ball) a. Squat down sticking your bum out and pass through your legs, then using the thrust of your hips bring the ball/kettlebell through and up to chest height REPS: 2 x 12 reps b. ADVANCE: Do a figure of 8. Start as above but pick up a 8kg kettlebell in your right hand – pass it through your legs, reach your left hand behind to catch it, then bring it round the outside of your left leg, now bring it to your chest! EASY!!

2. ADVANCED SUPERMAN a. Start on all fours, toes turned under, knees of floor b. Lift and extend left arm and right leg – hold c. Then bring elbow to touch knee d. Straighten and repeat REPS: 2 x 6 reps WARNING: Keep the belly button sucked into the spine to ensure you are level – try not to twist your hips!

4. CRUNCH AND LENGTHEN a. Feet apart and hands on hips, lower into squat b. Inhale and reach your right arm across your body then contract to the right REPS: 4 reps per side slowly and then 8 per side fast.

3. WALKING PLANK a. Start in plank position with your body straight from head to toe (remember suck belly button to spine and squeeze those glutes.) b. Slowly walk your hands forward, keeping hips level and maintaining the line and then return. REPS: 2 x 8 reps TOO HARD: Just hold in plank – sucking in and squeezing as hard as you can!

5. CROSS-LEG LIFT AND HOLD a) Sit cross-legged, arms by your sides and palms flat on the floor. Engage your core and lift off the floor slightly. b) Hold, then return to the floor. Placing books under your hands will make it easier; straightening your legs will hurt more. Do two sets of five reps... aaaand, collapse.

Fit Boost

The monthly guide of things to do, eat, drink and buy

Did you know?

Do Fitness Trackers Work Efficiently? Fitness trackers may be a trendy way to monitor every step we take, but these gadgets are actually pretty bad at keeping tabs on how much energy we burn, a new study suggests. Scientists pitted 12 devices such as the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up24 against two proven methods of monitoring energy expenditure - locking people in a room to assess every calorie consumed and burned, or asking people at home to drink specially treated water that makes it possible to detect energy output with a urine test. In the first experiment, measurements from the fitness trackers deviated from the lab results in a typical day by underestimating energy expenditure by as much as 278 calories or overestimating by up to 204 calories. With the second experiment, the devices ranged from 69 to 590 calories lower than the urine tests. The results are troubling because when fitness trackers overestimate exercise, people who need more exercise to

maintain or lose weight might get too little activity, increasing their risk for obesity and other chronic health problems, said senior study author Motohiko Miyachi of the National Institute of Health and Nutrition in Tokyo. "These studies demonstrate that even the most popular applications and devices may be inaccurate or highly variable." To test the accuracy of fitness trackers for monitoring energy expenditure, Miyachi and colleagues asked nine men and 10 women ages 21 to 50 to wear 12 different devices while participating in the two experiments. Eight devices used in the experiments are popular with consumers in Japan - Fitbit Flex, Jawbone UP24, Misfit Shine, Epson Pulsense PS-100, Garmin Vivofit, Tanita AM-160, Omron CalorieScan HJA-403C, and Withings Pulse O2. The other four gadgets have been validated in previous research Panasonic Actimarker EW 4800, Suzuken Lifecorder EX, Omron

Studies in the Journal of Exercise and Fitness showed that this stir fry staple can cut an average of 4.1 kg of body fat over 10 weeks when combined with strength training. And the best news - 1

teaspoon a day is all you need to see results. Pair your ginger with meat – further studies show combining it with protein doubles th speed at which ginger reaches your muscles.

Active style Pro HJA-350IT, and ActiGraph GT3X. For the first experiment, participants went into what's known as a metabolic chamber, a room specially designed to monitor calories consumed and burned, for 24 hours. They got three meals, and they could work at a desk, exercise on a treadmill, watch television, do housework, and sleep while they were in the room. In this airtight chamber, scientists can use a technique known as indirect calorimetry to assess energy expenditure by measuring carbon dioxide production and oxygen consumption. Compared with these measurements, half of the fitness trackers underestimated energy expenditure and the rest overestimated it. For the second experiment, each participant wore the devices for 15 days and collected urine samples on eight days. Every fitness tracker underestimated energy expenditure, the study found.

PEEL AWAY PRESSURE Bananas are great for a hangover and your blood pressure due to their high potassium content. Due to recent studies in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition it

reveals that having more potassium may be just as vital as having less salt when it comes to a healthy BP as it neutralises the heart damaging effects of salt.

THE TRUTH ABOUT FATS! Confused about FATS? Saturated Fats are the ones you should reduce – according to the American Heart Association, they should still only be about 5-6% of your daily diet. So what are Saturated Fats? Lamb, Fatty Beef, Pork, Dairy –

milk – cheese (Full fat) But be aware there are some good Saturated fats: Coconut oil and Brazil nuts. Confused? Boxing Bean will explain this clearer over the next few weeks…..

Food & Drink

THE TASTE OF APRIL What’s

in season this month?

Jersey Royals There’s no mistaking the taste of Jersey Royal new potatoes. Their unique flavour comes from Jersey’s rich fertile earth, gentle climate and the way our farmers grow them. The early season potatoes are smaller and more tender, the later season ones larger and more flavourful; both are fabulous. Look for unwashed potatoes.

To enjoy them at their best buy just what you plan to use in the next two days and keep them in a cool, dark place. Leave the skins on - most of the flavour and goodness lies just beneath the surface - and give them a wash. Steam or boil until tender and add butter and other fresh herbs such as mint, chives or parsley as desired.

Asparagus Asparagus is a Spring vegetable offering more folic acid than any other veg! Look for firm but tender stalks with good colour and closed tips. It’s worth eating it on the day you buy, but you can store asparagus in the fridge with a damp paper towel wrapped around the bottom of the stalks and they should keep for a couple of days. Wash in cold water and remove

the bottom ends of the stalks. Boil or steam quickly until just tender, around 4 to 7 minutes depending on thickness. Asparagus is a great source of fibre, potassium, vitamins A and C and glutathione, a phytochemical with antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties.

Crab and Asparagus Casserole with Jersey Royal New Potatoes Crab is generally in season from April to November, so this recipe is perfect for Spring, including other in-season produce such as asparagus and Jersey Royal’s. This recipe was for 2, so of course, if you’re cooking for more just multiply your ingredients. Ingredients • 4 X asparagus • 30 grams fresh mushrooms • 1 small finely chopped onion

• 1 tablespoon margarine • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1/4 teaspoon salt • dash of pepper • 120ml skim milk • 200 grams fresh crab meat, cut into pieces • Handful of grated cheese Directions 1. Fry the asparagus with a drizzle of olive oil for 2 minutes on each side, remove from the pan and cut into 1/2 inch pieces. Set aside.

2. In a saucepan, cook mushrooms and onion in margarine until onion is tender. Stir in corn flour, salt and pepper. Stir in milk all at once. Cook and until thickened and bubbly. Stir in crab and asparagus. 3. Spoon mixture into a casserole dish and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Bake in a 200C oven for 10 minutes. Serve with seasoned Jersey Royal New Potatoes.

We have a large selection of Home Baked Cakes, Daily Specials including local produce and our Famous Crab Sandwich! Enjoy a Jersey Cream Tea overlooking the panoramic views of St Brelade’s Bay. We are open 7 days a week from 9am - 9pm. Food served throughout the day.

Add a splash of colour to your living room...

www.jerseypages.info

A little colour in your life reflects your personality and lifts your mood. While it’s true that neutral room schemes provide a blank canvas, there’s a lot to be said for introducing colour. Different shades can have an uplifting or calming effect and your choice of colour and soft furnishings can go a long way to reflecting your personality. Colours seen in nature, such as sky blue and restful leaf green have a calming effect on us, while red is a stimulating shade and yellow is uplifting (sunshine yellow... need we say more?). The key to decorating with one colour on walls and furniture is to use different shades of the same colour together, such as a soft apple green sofa alongside emerald metal side tables. It’s also a good idea to mix textures, for example combining matt paint on walls with a sleek, glossy lamp base. Try and work your colour scheme into all areas of your living room - such as your bay windows. Do you want to create a dramatic, modern look?

25

Paint walls in a dark midnight blue for a moody backdrop and choose furniture in rich shades such a hot pink sofa for an opulent look. Combine pattern with a block of colours, why not go for a gorgeous teal patterned wallpaper and add a modern, low-level sofa in a deep coral shade? Contemporary carpet and rug designs are another way to add vibrancy to your interior. Pastel shades can work equally well for a touch of colour, go for powder blue, pink or lilac and add interest with striped or floral accessories. If you have a small living room, keep colours and shades light to make the room feel a big as possible.

DIYgirl Turquoise Painted Belt Stool As I briefly mentioned last month, I have become increasingly obsessed with “The Great Interior Design Challenge” and have decided to attempt the belted stool from one of the episodes. I used: • Stool • 17 strips of belt • Paint • Nails I purchased my stool and belts from various charity shops for a total of £14.

To start To prep my stool, I removed the old seating cover and sanded it down to even out the paint and remove the shine. I used turquoise acrylic paint to coat the stool, including the corners of the seating pad as these will be on show. The belts I nailed a belt underneath the stool and wrapped it around, over the front. I then nailed a belt underneath, on the side next to the one I had already done. This time when I wrapped it over the front, I put it underneath the previous belt. I followed these steps until I had weaved under and over every belt, pulling tightly as I went to make sure there were no gaps. Once I had completed the weaved pattern, I nailed the belts underneath the stool, on the opposite edges. To finish I sprayed the stool, with a matte polyurethane and left it to dry for a couple of hours. Not everyone’s cup of tea - but I love it!

Rocking Chair

Befe

27

After

I’ve always wanted my own rocking chair and I’d spent a lot of time looking at how to make one from scratch, but kept getting confused by all the different measurements, so I decided to “half” make one! What I used • Chair • 2 pieces of 50” x 3” finishing timber • Jigsaw • 4 x 3” screws • Sandpaper • White chalk paint • Acrylic paint • Material for seat • Nails Altogether I only spent £15. I bought my dining chair from Hospice for £5, the timber for £4 and the material for £6.

Colour I chose a deep wine coloured acrylic and gave the chair a couple of coats, leaving time to dry in between. Using a smaller brush I went over the grooves in the backrest to get rid of the white spots.

To start The first thing I did was remove the original material from the seat by pulling out the nails and staples from underneath the chair. This wasn’t as easy as it sounds there were over 50 staples and I only had a flat head screwdriver to remove them!

The seat I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do with the seat, so I headed to the fabric shop to have a browse. I finally settled on a white fluffy material.

The rockers I roughly worked out the size I wanted my rockers to be, leaving grooves for the feet of the chair, and drew them on my plywood. Using a jigsaw I cut the rockers out and sanded the base to make sure they were even and smooth.

Using the old fabric, I traced the shape onto my new material and cut it out, ready for upholstering.

Once I was happy with the rockers, I fixed them in place with the screws. Unfortunately, I didn’t work my dimensions out very well and I ended up with a chair that rocked forward!

I fitted the new material over the seat and secured it underneath with a few nails. After 10 hours my rocking chair was finally complete. It may tilt forward, but it still rocks! Thinking on my feet, I removed the screws, cut an inch off both back legs and secured the rockers in place again. (It kind of worked!) Painting To prep the chair for painting, I sanded down the whole thing, including the grooves and rockers. I gave the whole chair a quick coat of white chalk paint, so the chair and the rockers were the same shade, ready for my bright colour. Once the paint was dry, I sanded over any drips to make sure it had a smooth finish.

Politically correct at work Warning! This article by its very nature must tackle some difficult issues, include some rarely used words and some sensitive themes. If you are offended by anything written in this article the author wishes to assure you it was entirely unintentional. With this in mind the author invites you to think: have we really gone too far or not far enough?

By Vernon Breese

Today the work place requires us to do, and to be, so much more than merely experts in our chosen professions. Some of the demands on businesses in the last 25 years in technology, compliance and corporate governance, better treatment for employees with increased protection, a host of new regulations and laws have been long overdue. They have in the main been welcomed and we live with them more or less happily. One might argue we are much better off with all this change though we could all find examples of change that didn’t work (the paperless office idea)

and elements which should have changed but didn’t (consumer credit protection for example and the behaviours of our once highly trusted bankers). The one relatively new demand I struggle with is the thing that has become known to us as “Political Correctness”. This is an area of real importance and astonishingly one in which we don’t seem to ever be trained in – just like becoming a parent! I have always believed that if you wanted to be a parent you should by law be presented with a structured coaching plan or some method of organised guidance or training beforehand and on an ongoing basis. The very best I could do to become a good parent (and I continue to fall short in this) was to remember everything my mum and dad did - then make absolutely certain I never did any of that! Political Correctness is in this space – at least that’s how it seems to me. It’s something you have to pick up as you go along and learn on the

job so to speak. We all strive I am sure to do the best and we hope not to inadvertently offend but where do the rules come from, who decides what is permissible and what isn’t? And - how do we keep abreast of the “correct correctness”? Don’t misunderstand me, I think some language is quickly and easily recognised as incorrect, rude, offensive, inappropriate etc and we would avoid these at all costs but that might not be true of a neighbor in a bar or a new acquaintance at a conference. They might think what was said was utterly innocuous, another would say it was intolerable? Political Correctness means different things to different people and the rules change from place to place as well as irregularly as time passes by… so at the risk of upsetting, folk let’s take an example of some obviously sensitive words that have all but left our language today to be replaced by ‘preferred’ words…

“The one relatively new demand I struggle with is the thing that has become known to us as ‘Political Correctness’.”

When I was very young (though loathe to give it away - early 60’s) I remember my Gran referring to the young child next door who wore calipers on her legs - as a “cripple”. It seemed to me then that this was the word used completely appropriately and innocently for someone who’s legs were bound in metal braces. Now, even saying this word in my head makes me shiver – and this I think has come about mainly because the word was used increasingly ever since the early 60s to mean something utterly derogatory. The word became a form of violent verbal abuse often shouted at someone to imply they were completely incapacitated in some way. As a result, the word was “discontinued” in its original use and it seemed a replacement was found in the word “spastic”. This word too gives me shivers of unease just repeating it in my head and chiefly for the same reasons given above. This word was often shorted to “spack” at school I recall and was likewise replaced. We then moved to common use of the word handicapped (still used today in France) and then through phases of the use of words like ‘invalid’ and much more recently to ‘disabled’ and ‘challenged’.

“UK council bosses feared the original name might cause offence. (Surely this is a backfiring insult to anyone called Richard? Particularly any Richard’s suffering with acne?)” Here’s an interesting thing: my 80 year old mother who is unfortunately severely incapacitated (a prisoner in her own bed but blessed with a warped sense of humour) … catching me in the corner of her eye as I tripped on the hose to her catheter at my last visit called me “a cripple”! We both laughed of course but she hasn’t walked for more than a decade. When she said that word, it was received almost like a term of endearment and it certainly didn’t send a shiver of unease through me. I shan’t be quick to use it myself but these twists are surely interesting, just as it is to me to hear groups of people who are in some way challenged use what I would sense to be derogatory terms when they speak amongst themselves to one another. So, is our language in need of continual change in order to maintain moving standards of political correctness and if so, how will we be advised and by whom, in order that we adopt correctness?

This is one end of the spectrum perhaps and therefore less difficult to navigate but what about the use of the prefix Miss or what about the word Chairman to mean the one who leads a board for example? Is ok to accidentally refer to an as yet unknown sought candidate as just she or just he when you meant either? Is it politically incorrect to label someone prejudiced if they make a language mistake in all innocence and unwittingly? It happens! Of course we all know there are many who will not keep up and they may well come unstuck when they truly offend but what about all the others caught in the middle-ground of understanding or ignorance? And when does it become ridiculous? Here I leap to some silly or interesting examples depending on your view. Though I hope I might now lighten the mood (and include my comments in brackets) it will not surprise me that some or you may not see a funny side to some of these examples

irrespective of whether they are genuine or not. Take a look at these I found and see what you think: • Apparently the BBC has somewhere dropped the use of the terms Before Christ (BC) and Anno Domini (AD) and decided that the terms 'Before Common Era' / 'Common Era' are more appropriate. (I have only just recently learned which one is which and now they change them!) • The European Parliament introduced proposals to outlaw titles stating marital status such as 'Miss' and 'Mrs' so as not to cause offence. It also meant that 'Madame' and 'Mademoiselle', would be banned. (Actually I think this is completely right and should have been done ages ago) • Throughout several US councils and organisations, any terms using the word 'man' as a prefix or suffix have been ruled as not being politically correct. 'Manhole' is now referred to as a 'utility' or 'maintenance' hole. (Hmm) • Cartoon rogue Dennis the Menace has been given a politically correct make over. BBC chiefs decided to take away his edge in the remake. Gone are his bombs, catapult, water pistol and pea shooter - and in their place is a simple boyish grin. (This is simply sad. The characters in the Beano and Dandy are alive only in the archives now) • Spotted Dick - a classic English

dessert has been renamed to avoid embarrassment. The traditional pudding Spotted Dick has been given the title Spotted Richard, after UK council bosses feared the original name might cause offence. (Surely this is a backfiring insult to anyone called Richard? Particularly any Richard’s suffering with acne?) • A school in Seattle renamed its Easter eggs 'spring spheres' to avoid causing offence to people who did not celebrate Easter. (This is tongue twitter!) • A UK council has banned the term 'brainstorming' – and replaced it with 'thought showers', as local lawmakers thought the term may offend epileptics. (Too oblique for me) • A UK recruiter was stunned when her job advert for 'reliable' and 'hard-working' applicants was rejected by the job centre as it could be offensive to unreliable and lazy people. (I am trying to consider which paid roles specifically require unreliable and lazy people! What if she had placed an advert for unreliable and lazy people? Would the hardworking reliable folk be offended?) For my part; of course we should absolutely not make or suffer

racist comments, bigotry, prejudice etc etc as from those small seeds a host of misery can befall us and we should be ever vigilant to check those dangers. However, there must be a sensible limit to where casual language stops and PC starts or there should be some clarity. I do fear for people who may be innocently ignorant of some change and find themselves having complaints levelled against them because someone was offended by a word or phrase they used unwittingly. It happens. It could happen to you… We would all do well to watch our language and think before we make an utterance but in real life that isn’t always what happens in the most innocent of circumstances, I just think a little balance might be welcome?

The Busy Queen Bee on customer service Buzz 1 Assessing your internal customers, external customers and your environment Honeybees’ basic strategy is to maximise return over a broad geographic area and extended time horizon. Bees have to assess their environment at all times and be prepared to adapt depending on the weather conditions, the time of the year, the type of flowers and the competition for nectar with birds and other insects. Bees are heavily invested in research and development, constantly on the lookout for the next best thing while taking in revenues from the current sources. Scout bees monitor the number of sites at any given time to ensure they will be the most profitable. Companies need, just like bees, to invest in developing their employees, understanding their customers' needs, and continually innovate to keep up with today's market demand. Assessing your internal customers: Why? Assessing your internal customer is now widely recognised as a vital input to any strategy for

customer-focused business performance improvement. Satisfying internal customers could be described as a company's ability to generate genuine teamwork among all departments in the organisation and the need to improve processes, responsiveness and reduce overheads is focusing management attention on the major internal business functions, such as sales, marketing, credit and receivables, manufacturing, distribution, packing and shipping, quality, production planning, etc.; and to instil in every individual the constant awareness that customer service is everyone's business. Assessing your external customers: Why? Understanding customers is the key to giving them good service. To give good customer care you must deliver what you promise. But exceptional customer care involves getting to know your customers so well that not only do you meet your customers’

expectations but you can anticipate their needs and exceed their expectations. To understand your customers’ needs, your employees need to have extremely good communication skills; listening, asking the right questions at the right time is all part of the sales process. By building a rapport with your customers, being genuinely interested in their needs, and what’s in it for them, not you,

“Companies need, just like bees, to invest in developing their employees, understanding their customers’ needs, and continually innovate to keep up with today’s market demand”

they will reward you with their custom and loyalty. Assessing - your environment: Why? Because the business environment is constantly changing, businesses need to develop a marketing audit and this should be used as a reference tool, with constant updates reflecting changes in the external environment and your own internal business experiences. It would enable you to assess past and present performance as well as to provide the basis for evaluating possible future courses of action. The market environment is a marketing term and refers to factors and forces that affect a company's ability to build and maintain successful relationships with customers. While you can measure strategy performance against targets, an assessment of your company's marketing strategy goes

further. In addition to evaluating performance, it is important to look at exactly how key internal and external influences had an impact on the performance variables. It examines how you measure company performance and how sustainable any performance increases are likely to be over the longer term. An effective marketing strategy assessment can have a significant impact on the bottom line. In Brief

(L-R) Christopher Hilditch, Partner, Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP; Justin Woodhouse, Tax Partner, PwC; Simon Witney, Chair of the BVCA Legal and Technical Committee; Pascal Saint-Amans, Director, OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration; and Nick Robinson, broadcaster and moderator.

“Fund manager migration to Jersey” highlighted as exciting trend at annual conference Discussing trends within the alternative fund space, panellists at this year’s Jersey Finance London Funds Conference agreed that a growing focus on governance, substance and reputation was presenting opportunities for Jersey to affirm itself as a major centre for fund management as well as fund servicing. The net asset value of funds under administration in Jersey

grew over the final quarter of last year to stand at $334bn, with alternatives business representing 73% of that total. With 126 fund promoters now operating in Jersey, a 113% increase since 2011, panellist Ben Robins, Chairman of the Jersey Funds Association, said that the inward migration of fund managers to Jersey was ‘an exciting trend’ and suggested that AIFMD and the OECD’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting

(BEPS) project in particular were encouraging managers to reconsider their business models, providing Jersey with real opportunities as a ‘substance’ jurisdiction, offering genuine asset management expertise. The significance of BEPS was reinforced in a keynote speech by Pascal Saint-Amans, Director of the OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration,

during which he underlined the importance of its implementation and how it now gives more than 100 countries an opportunity to act on an equal footing to promote global growth. The conference, entitled Clear Direction, took place on 3 March at 8 Northumberland Avenue and was attended by more than 300 professionals.
