Making A Successful Splash!

Swimarathon Raises More Than £133,000 For Local Charities

News In Brief Les Amis Turns 40 A Jersey charity for islanders with learning disabilities has celebrated its 40th birthday. It opened at Five Oaks in 1975.

Islanders have once again excelled in their support for Jersey’s longest running charity event, and helped raise the sum of £133,087 at the 2015 Lions Club of Jersey Swimarathon, sponsored by RBC Wealth Management.

It now supports 80 islanders to live independent lives in 30 houses and flats across Jersey, as well as offering a respite service.

John Le Maistre, President of the Lions Club of Jersey, said: ‘We are delighted by the generosity and support shown towards this year’s Swimarathon and the unstinting efforts of everyone who took part or donated money. It is wonderfully fitting that an event which encourages participation from all corners of our community will help, amongst other projects, local charities that offer new and diverse activities to people with disabilities.’

The funds raised will be divided among specific causes, with 25% of the money raised going to charities supporting people with disabilities, 50% will provide respite holidays and support general community service projects and the remaining 25% will be donated to Channel Islands Air Search, a charity with whom the Lions Club of Jersey and Guernsey has always been closely associated. Chris Blampied, Head of Banking, RBC Wealth Management said: ‘The level of support and flood of donations for this event is nothing short of amazing. We had a record

Kerbside Recycling Kerbside recycling to be implemented in St Brelade after parishioners voted through the scheme at a public meeting last month. More than 50 islanders were at Communicare to hear more details about the proposal. They then passed the plans by 39 votes to 7. It means the parish - which has more than 10,500 residents - will be the sixth to introduce kerbside recycling, following its introduction in St John, Trinity, St Lawrence, St Mary and St Helier. It could be up and running as soon as July, and will cost households about £10 extra per year.

Survey Reveals That The Desire To Buy Local Is Increasing More and more of us want to buy products made and grown in Jersey, according to a new survey.

I’ve Got A Friend Over I do wonder if the popularity of football on the island is in decline. You could think I was mad reading the first line of this write-in. How can it be you might be thinking?

league which was successful for many years. Fast forward to 2015, or should I say the 2014/15 football season and so many teams struggle to get 11 players on the pitch. Why is this I wonder? Well there are some players in my team who seem to be away at a stag do every other weekend (you can’t blame them I guess if they have a fun/crazy weekend away to Benidorm planned) but as for those who say ‘sorry I have a friend over’

or ‘it’s my mate’s birthday so I can’t play’ (I’m sure it’s still his birthday after the game too!) this is just not good enough.

we also pay to the JFA? It makes you wonder what the JFA money pays for, perhaps we all own a bit of the new turf at Springfield?

Then, like most things, perhaps it comes down to money. Paying £80 a season to your club is a little tough for some people to fork out, especially when games are getting called off for teams scratching. But of course, you should have to pay subs as it pays the bills for the club to run, or does it? What about the money

So to pay club subs is fine, but just maybe that little extra JFA tax which pays for... I don’t know, is the reason why I don’t have a match tomorrow. Maybe next season I’ll just save my money and go to Benidorm instead! #JustSayin’

Hello Spring... Lighter nights – check. (Slightly) warmer temperatures – check. The urge to purchase something not woolly – check.

Ladies...

PASTELS

This trend pops up every year with gorgeous, soft hues evoking pretty flowers and ice cream by the seaside. These muted colours look great with every skin tone which makes pastel clothing and accessories a super-simple way to supplement your wardrobe without having to think too much about it. Spring pastels provide a refreshing antidote for the darker shades we wear in winter, especially when paired with lighter fabrics like chiffon or soft cotton. And, of course they look great for all these Spring time activities like picnics in the park and walks through the countryside we’ve got planned… weather permitting!

Gents...

HATS

The humble hat is a super way to add a little jene sais quoi to your overall look without looking like a fashion victim. • Flat Cap. Yes, these have been around before your grandfather used to wear them, but a flat cap is a great way to add a little interest to a simple jumper-jeans-brogues combo. • Bucket Hat. Apparently not just for 90s guitar bands and football hooligans, the bucket hat is great for these long awaited sunny days the MET office is promising. • Fedora. Effortlessly cool, and to be found all over the high street, the fedora adds a little sophistication to your look and looks great paired with a crisp white shirt and a sharp pair of jeans.

Less Stress

Massage & Beauty

Can you tell us about your background in the beauty industry? I have been in the beauty industry for 9 years now. As soon as I finished school i went straight up to highlands to do my NVQ level 2 and 3. I have wanted to work as a beauty therapist since I was a little girl. After college I went to Stiener training academy in London before working on a cruise ship. Since then i have been working in various salons and nail bars on the island.

The beauty industry is a competitive market in the island, what attributes do you have which you feel sets you apart from the rest? Well on a personal note I feel I am a quite grounded person. I have always tried to follow the saying 'treat others how you would like to be treated' and that's exactly how I treat each of my clients when they come and see me. Customer service and satisfaction means so much to me and whether my client is popping in for a quick eyebrow wax or a 3 hour treatment, my level of high standard will always be the same and i strive to make them feel as wonderful as possible. If i was to put you on the spot, what treatment would you consider your speciality? All of them of course!! No, I would have to say massage. Working on the cruise ship I was a massage therapist and when you are massaging 8 clients a day for 7 months you do pick up 'a nack' for

it. Plus the benefits of regular massage are amazing, not only does it help you relax, it helps relieve muscular pain, improve circulation and improve well being. So you have just introduced Kaeso facials, can you tell us about it and the benefits of a facial? Kaeso are a lovely brand of products. They are made with all natural ingredients and are free from all the nasty things like Parabens, Sulphate and Glycol. Whether you have sensitive, combination, dry or a more mature skin a facial will leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed. With Kaeso's botanical ingredients it will be feeding your skin with the vitamins and minerals it needs that it may not receive in our modern and stressful lifestyles. (plus who would say no to an hours uninterrupted pampering)

Spring Specials Spring is here, time to de stress with less stress. Less stress massage & beauty are back with their signature treat me, pamper me, spoil me packages for all your individual needs and price ranges. This month, freshen up tired and wintery skin with a kaeso facial. Take full advantage of the gym, steam room, swimming pool and jacuzzi before or after your treatment. Treat me - £29 Kaeso facial. This 1 hour treatment will include a consultation to discuss and meet your skins individual needs. It will then follow with a Double Cleanse, Tone, Exfoliate, Facial massage, Mask and Moisturiser with the choice of either a hand and arm massage or a scalp massage. Pamper me - £39 Kaeso facial as above with the choice of either a eyelash tint, eyebrow tint, eyebrow wax, lip wax or an underarm wax. Spoil me - £49 Kaeso facial as above with the choice of a Back, Neck and Shoulder massage or 2 of the above in the Pamper Me package. Gift Vouchers Are Available! Moss Bros. Opening Soon At Liberty Wharf www.jerseypages.info

Moss Bros., the UK’s leading formal menswear specialist selling Men’s suits, shirts, coats, formal/ casual jackets, shoes and accessories will soon be opening a store in St Helier’s Liberty Wharf shopping complex. The luxury retailer founded in 1851 and best known for its hire service is being brought to Jersey by the Channel Islands’ largest retailer, SandpiperCI. Sandpiper CEO Tony O’Neill said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Moss Bros., a traditionally strong UK brand that continues to evolve despite challenging market conditions. Announcing the Moss Bros. franchise is actually a significant milestone for Sandpiper. This will be the tenth retail brand we've introduced to the island in the last

five years. Our strategy of introducing market leading, blue chip retail brands to the Channel Islands has significantly changed the local retail landscape. During this time we have created more than 200 jobs and widened choice for both islanders and visitors alike.” Wedding or partygoers wishing to hire Moss Bros. products for a Jersey event can order in the UK and pick up the items in Jersey avoiding their items creasing during transit. Similarly, for guests attending events in UK, customers can be fitted for Moss Hire orders in Jersey and collect and/or return at stores closer to the event in mainland UK. Moss Bros Group plc CEO Brian Brick added, “We are excited to be working with Sandpiper. As one of Britain’s longest standing heritage

brands, we look forward to sharing our knowledge, expertise and brand breadth with the people of Jersey. Whether looking for slim fit, tailored or classic formalwear to hire or buy, we are confident that our new store in Liberty Wharf will offer outstanding selection and service – as we have done since 1851.” The Moss Bros. store will open in early summer, leasing the last remaining large unit in Liberty Wharf ’s shopping centre. Moss Bros. will join Sandpiper’s other Liberty Wharf brands including: M&S Home, George, Hotel Chocolat, Costa Coffee and Pasty Presto. (Other brands Sandpiper has brought to Jersey to join its original Marks and Spencer franchise are: Iceland, Crew Clothing, Jack Wills, Warburtons and Greggs)

Lucy Sanderson caught up with event organiser Paul Shoer Paul, you’re a known face on the local scene but this is your first event - what can people expect from a ‘Fierce Angel’ night?

of other high profile local promoters like Rocksteady, Clique, Fuzzbox and Philosophy of House to ensure there was diversity in Pure’s calendar.

Yes this is the first event I’ve promoted by myself, but not my first time promoting an event. I consider myself very fortunate to have amassed a wealth of experience from my years as part of the Pure management and promotion team. Keith Robinson, and myself worked alongside the owner of Pure (and champion of Jerseys dance scene), Martin Hodson under the guide of *boogaloo.

Since the departure of Pure, Rojo has taken up the mantle and launched the dance scene into the next level with phenomenal acts like Blond & Young Disciples, while still supporting tried and tested nights like Philosophy of House & Reminisce.

Through this partnership we hosted some of the greatest legends in the dance scene - Ant Brooks, Solarstone, Brandon Block, Funkagenda, The Stafford Brothers, Reza, Mark Doyle (Fierce Angel), Mark Wilkinson, Soul Avengers, Agnelli & Nelson, Graham Gold, Kim Fai & many many more We also worked closely with a number

Fierce Angel and Rojo are the perfect combination because they are both unique brands that have that something special quality with glamorous style and at their centre is a love of music. Will it be an ongoing thing? There are lots of great ideas for future events in the pipeline but I don’t want to give too much away at this stage, lets just make the first one the best it is and then look to the next.

Tell us a bit about the music… A Fierce Angel night features only the finest fiercest house music. The sound of Fierce Angel caters to everyone’s taste, quite simply its pure vocal house anthems, the type of music that calls you to the dance floor and has you dancing and singing all night long. Mark Doyle is one of the founders and creators of Hed Kandi, right? Mark was solely responsible for the creation of Hed Kandi while working for Jazzfm. He presented the radio show, compiled the albums, planned the marketing and art directed the covers. Mark’s last compilation for Hed Kandi was HEDK049 Beach House. He left Hed Kandi in June 2005 to set up his own completely independent record label. In May 2006 Mark launched Fierce Angel Records & Fierce Angel Events. Instead

of taking on any investors Mark remortgaged his house and launched the new label as a completely self-funded project. I’ve always admired Mark’s tenacity and resilience; his experiences have never dampened his spirit or enthusiasm, he is definitely one of the most upbeat and positive people I know and this shines through his music and dj sets. Fierce Angel releases so far include over 30 compilations - Beach Angel, Tokyo Disco, Es Vive, Fierce Angel, Angels Fall, Fierce Disco, Digital Angel and The Collection, alongside 25 artist EP’s and the syndicated radio show is broadcast to over 20 countries. Mark Says “It’s been an amazing ride so far and the bumps in the road have only made us stronger. I’m so pleased to have all our Fierce Team on board for the next exciting chapter in the story of Fierce Angel and would like the thank everyone for all their support over the last 25 years.”

Having previously worked as a property negotiator for a number of years, we believe Dennis has the qualities to enhance our current offering in the Jersey property market.

In March 2015, Dennis Shore was appointed as First Choice’s General Manager, with responsibility for their Sales, Lettings and Property Management services. So what now for First Choice? Firstly, we have now completed the refurbishment of our shop in York Street opposite the Town Hall, with our new branding for the business with help from Sophie Oswald, better reflecting the modern and professional approach of who we are now. We have a new logo, but the principles remain the same. As well as this, First Choice has developed their service offering to meet

the demands of landlords following the introduction of the recent legislation aimed at protecting the interest of tenants and other stakeholders, such as the provision of a condition report at the start and end of every tenancy. In developing this, director Adam Pearce has worked for the past thirteen months with a leading national UK provider of property services. This experience has enabled First Choice to better understand the types of legislation that exist in the UK and gain foresight about the types of approaches that may be adopted in Jersey in the future.

Maddie has worked with First Choice for over two years and in this time has gained a strong understanding of the needs of landlords, tenants, and other parties involved in the property chain. Our aim is to work closely with our counter parties including other agencies with a view to ensuring a cohesive and smooth transaction for all involved. We recognise moving home is, or can be a particularly stressful period and to that end, First Choice continues to focus on the structure of the business, our relationships with other agents and, development of our sales and rental offerings.

Do You Have Patio So it’s that time of year again, the sun is shining and the garden is in need of some TLC. The grime, moss & weeds have gone, but wait….What are those black spots all over the stones? That’s what’s known as lichen. You’ve probably tried scrubbing the stones with hot soapy water, or maybe even bleach, but they just won’t budge! Lichen is a tough little bugger and likes nothing more than to reside on your lovely driveway, patio, brickwork etc.. In fact it isn’t overly fussed where it lays it’s roots. It is quite partial to sandstone but it will appear pretty much anywhere. It’s a type of airborne spore which blows in off trees and leaves, settles on your stones and then spreads. It digs itself deep into the stone with root like structure and is extremely hard to remove. Your average DIY pressure washer won’t even tackle it! So is patio black spot removal possible, what can you do? Joao Marques offers a patio black spot removal service! Check out the before and afters on the previous page! Call Joao on 869221 or 07797 755108 for a free quote.

Interest(ing) Rates... “There are approximately one million ways to disguise these rates and other charges” The world of credit is an old and murky one. Particularly in Jersey where borrowers are far less protected than our friends on the mainland. As long ago as 1974, and only after 12 years of drafting and reviewing, the UK introduced the Consumer Credit Act which was established primarily to protect innocent purchasers and those using Hire Purchase and Loans for example. We used to refer to these credit plans as “Paying On the Drip” but today these facilities sound so much more sophisticated, desirable and trustworthy – they are in fact the same as they ever were whether it is a credit card, a mortgage, an overdraft, a payday loan or a Hire Purchase Agreement for a fancy fridge…its all the same. You are being lent money at a cost and when that cost is compared to the amount borrowed and the period of time for which it is borrowed - you get an interest rate. There are approximately one million ways to disguise these rates and

other charges like ‘administration fees’ and ‘option to purchase fees’ and I am sure you’ve heard about most of them. Certainly credit customers need protection, absolutely no doubt, and the focus in 1974 was on key areas of concern like merchantable quality, cooling off periods, repossession rules and where and how a finance company could sign up a customer. During 12 years of deliberation they thought of almost everything leaving out only the interest rates applied by the various lenders. What the Act does require is for lenders to publish their rates and to express them as an APR (Annualised Percentage Rate). Unfortunately for the lenders, when they offer something really quite reasonable for example: to lend someone £100 for only a few weeks and expect £110 back (seems fair to me) the APR works out at something in excess of 1000% …and that seems outrageous. Nonetheless you will see these seemingly massive rates published at the foot of your TV

Act doesn’t regulate on rates in any case, should we even bother with a consumer credit act equivalent here in Jersey? Well in short, we should; at least by adopting the key protective elements.

Presently credit customers are afforded little or no standard protection where credit is provided locally. Now that the Banks are not lending so much, we are witnessing real growth in independent credit providers and herein lies a potential problem. They are not regulated in any way, they are not accountable to any local authority and there is no There is a very strong market for separate body through whom custhese loans. This recognises that occasionally customers will need a break due to unforeseen extra costs and this mechanism is built in to help manage such occasions and to help protect them. Seems really very fair and considerate. What is more, the French lenders’ rates are not artificially inflated to compensate the lender for the cost of operating such screen when these payday lenders advertise their schemes. The deal is often completely fair and reasonable but the APR mechanism would suggest that it really isn’t and so publishing rates is not something the lenders do in big bold letters, and that is why you may need Grampa’s specs to read them!

“Presently in Jersey, credit customers are afforded little or no standard protection” facilities. In this, the French are even ahead of the UK – but this only serves to highlight how far behind we are in Jersey. When you consider the depth and breadth of regulation established to protect foreign investors subscribing to financial schemes in Jersey it would be nice to see that we do ‘look after our own’ as well as some of the world’s wealthy citizens? We certainly aren’t there yet…not by a country mile. Words By Vernon Breese

Spotlight Interview With... ...Davis Krievins from Bento

My name is Davis and I have been with Bento for 5 years. I started off as a waiter and gradually progressed to become the owner of the business along with our head chef and business partner Christian Bation without who Bento wouldn't be what it is today. Christian has an immense amount of experience having been a sushi chef for 13 years! We have loved watching Bento blossom in to something so great, well-known and loved in Jersey. We have a diversity of nationalities in our kitchen, and the cross culture of the chefs brings unique skills and ideas to the table, mixing that experience with our Japanese style food to create a tasty and unique eatery.

For those that do not know can you tell us a little bit about Bento? Bento is Jersey’s first and only sushi bar. The Importance of Networking by Claire Boscq-Scott #TheBQB

“Smiling stimulates our brains’ in a way that even chocolate cannot match.”

First Impressions Count People buy people. Whatever you do, people will buy your product or service and do business with you because they like you, trust you and know you are going to do what is right for them. Did you know that people make an assumption about you within seven seconds of meeting you; that’s a very short time to decide whether they are going to like you or not. Apparently, it then takes 23 subsequent meetings to change a person’s mind about you. First impressions are based on non-verbal communications according to a study done by ULCA: • 55% of people base their first impression on body language and personal appearance: the visual. • 38% of people base their first impression on what you say: the vocal. • 7% of people base their first impression on the words you use: the vocabulary. You need to make a positive impact and in order to do so that first impression is crucial. If, when you go shopping, the display window is the first thing you see and it gives a good impression then you will likely go in, but, if you don’t like what you see you will most likely walk past and never even bother entering the store. Your clothing says a lot about whom

you are and what you stand for: so dress to impress. When heading out to a networking event, make sure you know what the dress code is so you are not over or underdressed. I remember last year’s CIM award dinner; there was a very unusual dress code, which was called “lounge” dress code. It really confused everyone; a few men were actually wearing black tie when everyone else was wearing casual clothing. These men stood out, did not look very comfortable at all and actually appeared a little awkward.

Watch this excellent TedX talk from Amy Cuddy about the power of body language. http://www.ted.com/ speakers/amy_cuddy. Here you will learn some powerful stances, not just for first impressions, but this will also help you in a range of situations. It’s all in the eyes: do you know that smiling stimulates our brains’ reward mechanism, the limbic system, in a way that even chocolate cannot match?

Your body language is a reflection of how you are feeling. The way you stand, for example, is a very easy way to show if you are confident or not.

Whenever we smile there are two potential muscles we activate. The first one is the “zygomaticus major”, which controls the corners of your mouth. Scientifically, when this muscle is the only one to be activated, it’s not technically a genuine smile. Scientists call this the social smile.

The second muscle, known to show sincerity, is the “orbicularis occuli” and it encircles our eye socket. So, to genuinely smile at someone, both of those muscles need to be activated, this is called the true smile or “The Duchenne.” Now let’s take the handshake. A couple of months ago at The Busy Queen Bee Speed Buzzing events, one of the attendees introduced himself and shook everyone’s hands with his business card hidden in his palm. It was such an unusual start to a conversation, that people actually remembered him from this simple, but also effective introduction. Admittedly, they forgot his name, but they remembered him from his trick. Being of French origin, it is in our culture to kiss everybody, so I am not afraid to kiss the people I know, however when you don’t know people make that handshake a strong and confident one. No one wants a wet, shaky hand to be his or her first physical contact with a person. You need to assert the already great first impression you have worked so hard to make. Finally, ensure you create a positive impact; dress to impress, learn powerful stances, shake hands with confidence and make your first seven seconds impression counts.

Digital Due-Diligence Platforms Explored At Jersey Finance Debate Jersey’s ambitions to position itself as a leading FinTech jurisdiction and how digital innovation could assist Jersey’s finance industry with growing due diligence obligations formed the focus of an event hosted by Jersey Finance recently. At a sell-out event at the Pomme D’Or Hotel last month, a panel of experts discussed the potential benefits as well as the risks of adopting innovative technological platforms to provide financial services firms with ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) solutions. The panel, which included Andrew Le

Brun, Jersey Financial Services Commission, Helen Hatton, Sator Regulatory Consulting Limited, and William Grace, Carey Olsen and which was moderated by Hamish Ramsay, Standard Bank, also examined the implications for the regulator of a greater reliance on technology. In exploring just how resource-heavy KYC and AML processes are globally for firms in an age of ever-increasing regulation, the panel also considered whether digital solutions have the potential to increase operational efficiencies and improve client satisfaction, by expediting the on-boarding process and making the provision of KYC information more accessible for many.

In addition, during a series of presentations, three Jersey-based providers of KYC and AML services (KYCme, KYC World Wide and Elian) and one overseas provider (ID checker) provided elevator pitches of their products to highlight to attendees the variety of solutions currently being brought to the market.

Senator Philip Ozouf, Assistant Chief Minister provided his thoughts on the importance of innovation in Jersey’s financial services sector and highlighted the supportive measures the Government are taking to enable the industry to forge ahead in this area.

Would You Employ Yourself? “Unfortunately, Einstein has very little choice in the matter of his online personal brand” The birth of old school social media began as early as the 70’s. Bulletin boards were created that were no more than chunks of code designed for a small amount of users to communicate with one central system. In 1997 ‘sixdegrees’ was launched, one of the first sites to allow users to connect and view profiles, it didn’t last but no one was deterred. In 2003 LinkedIn was launched, the birth of tweeting arose in July 06 but the site that really launched the social media craze was Facebook in September 2006 when it opened its online doors to anyone thirteen plus. Herein lays one of our biggest Now it is worth mentioning that the above assets and problems all rolled into one… quote is unconfirmed to be one officially attributable to Einstein which for this topic Social media has changed the way we marserves as a great example of the power of ket ourselves - intentionally or not. For Social Media and the main focus of my several years now it has proved to be the primary tool in developing online brands, writings. personal or corporate. The difficulty many face is the understanding of how to effectively manage your digital self. I imagine that most readers will have some form of personal brand and whether it is your very own biography, a personal webpage, company ties or twitter feed it is a safe bet that most of your brand lies online. For those party to the Facebook circulars some will have seen the recently depicted Einstein quote ‘I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots’; the quote is often accompanied with a picture of teenage girls, all of whom are on their cell phones.

“Whether we like it or not we are defined by what people can find out about us”

Unfortunately Einstein has very little choice in the matter of his online personal brand which leads to the unfortunate circumstance of tech savvy comedians literally putting words in his mouth. The internet, once a fountain of knowledge at our fingertips, has begun to manifest as equally unreliable as it is useful. Yet despite the pitfalls of reading misleading information our generation still turns to the internet to answer the most basic of questions – how long has it been since you picked up a dictionary, a real Oxford press paper version?

use it. There has been a lot of backlash lately where companies have admitted checking applicants profiles pre-interview, again rightly or wrongly if the information is available employers will use it.

how you want people / employers / business connections to see you?’’. A drunk photo (or worse, several), angry ramblings on someone else’s post, constant status updates that give the wrong impression of your personality or work ethic, (we’ve all seen the post where someone on FB offends their boss) spam, digital newspaper clippings it is all out there even if you didn’t post it, if it has your name attached, it is connected to you. Enforcing privacy settings can help but in no means gives you full control.

Abstinence has always been the safer but less travelled road in these matters though in today’s world no online presence can be almost as detrimental as a bad one. If you can’t be found on google that’s just strange right? A personal brand can be a great asset, it can open doors to employment prospects and networking opportunities, it can Whether we like it or not we are defined by also close doors on the same. what people can find out about us, have you My LinkedIn feed is a constant buzz of ever ‘Googled’ yourself, (you should, reguupdates and job posts, recruiters scan- larly) do you like what you’ve seen? This complete scatter gun approach and lack of By Marie-Clara Thaureux diligence in reference to their job search could give many a detrimental view of this potential candidate, without ever knowing anything about them. It is stereotyping much like employers will do when presented with a FB feed of weekend party photos and swearword status’s. Anything we post online leaves a nice trail of digital breadcrumbs. I’m not saying don’t post, I’m not saying stereotyping is right, but it exists and you need to be aware of it. The internet is a hive of information that anyone can contribute to – and you should contribute, post interesting content, use LinkedIn to showcase professional achievements and build recommendations.
