Jersey Overseas Aid Commission 2015 Community Work Projects Jersey Overseas Aid Commission are seeking volunteers to take part in their 2015 Community Work Projects. They will be holding a presentation on Tuesday 21st October at St. Pauls Centre and welcome you to come along and find out how you could help. The aim of the Bangladesh 2015 project is to build additional classrooms, latrines, headmasters office and staff room at Little Stars Primary School in Muktaram Village which is in the Kurigram district in Northern Bangladesh. The Kurigram district has a population of approx. 2 million people, 17 rivers and its main crop is rice. This will be the third visit for a JOAC team. A team visited the school in April 2012 to help build classrooms and a team visited in 2013 to help construct a health clinic. The aim of the Uganda 2015 project is to build nursery

classrooms, latrines, and staff accommodation at Sermon on the Mountain Primary School in Luweero, Uganda. A team of JOAC volunteers helped to build classrooms at this school in 2007. The aim of the Zambia 2015 project is to build additional classrooms, latrines, and staff accommodation at Ng’andu Primary School in Mukuni Chiefdom of the Southern Province, Zambia. The school was opened in 1938 and although it has had some renovation work done it is one of the oldest in the area. Many of the children attending are orphans as a result of the high incidence of HIV/Aids in the area. Over the years Overseas Aid has found that a Team of equal numbers of males and females with an age range of 18 to 70 works well. Ideally they would wish to include some skilled tradesmen and a nurse but it is most important to have the

willingness to pitch in and work hard. Applicants should be reasonably fit and should not suffer from any health problems which would prevent them from carrying out physically demanding work for eight hours per day, five and a half days per week. It will also be hot; about 30 degrees so team members should be prepared to work in hotter conditions than they are probably used to. Each volunteer, if accepted, will be expected to make a contribution of £550 to the project cost and to provide all his/her personal kit. £50 is returnable at the end of the project providing the volunteer has maintained a good standard of behavior throughout and has completed the de-brief form and attended the teams welcome back session upon return. A recommended kit list will be provided during the training period.

Mauritian Reptiles Get The Backing Of International Philanthropist Thanks To Local Trust Company, Nautilus Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is one of several local charities set to benefit from a multi-million pound charitable foundation, which is managed by Jersey based trust company, Nautilus. The Jersey Foundation, established by an international philanthropist, will be making pledges to several local charities throughout 2014, one of which is to Durrell for £50,000. The donation will fund conservation work in Mauritius. The £50,000 will support Durrell’s mission of saving species from extinction through the delivery of conservation projects on the ground and training Mauritian conservationists. On the ground, the funding will support efforts to restore six species of highly threatened reptile, including the Telfair’s Skink, Orange Tailed Skink and Gunther’s Gecko, on the network of small islands that lie off the coast of Mauritius. This includes funding a desperately needed 4 x 4 vehicle to move the team and

equipment to field sites, trips to each of the islands, and the movement of reptiles between islands to rebuild populations. The funding will also support the work with Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to build local skills for conservation through the provision of scholarships to attend the Endangered Species Recovery course that is based at the new Durrell Conservation Academy – Mauritius campus, as well as support for students coming to the UK and Jersey to receive specialist training. Jan Kenny, executive director of Nautilus, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with our client and to identify some really wonderful causes locally with which we are to provide financial support. We have an affinity with Durrell given that Nautilus also has offices in Mauritius and we can see first-hand the benefits the donation has made already. We hope that this is the start of an on-going relationship between Nautilus and Durrell.”

The award follows a succession of accolades for the Jersey restaurant, which is fast becoming known as a destination restaurant on the international scene. This year Ormer has picked up 3 AA Rosettes, The Food & Travel ‘Restaurant of the Year Award for Best Newcomer’ and been shortlisted for the coveted ‘AA Food Service Award’. The order has taken the seven-strong team at the brewery three weeks to create, brew and package the order of 845 casks of American brown Ale, which will be exclusive to JD Wetherspoon throughout the festival, which runs from 24th October to 11th November.

JD Wetherspoon ordered more than 60,000 pints of American Brown Ale from the Longueville-based brewery for its 2014 Autumn Beer Festival. It’s the fifth consecutive year that Liberation Brewery has been invited by the pub giant to supply a beer for the prestigious event.

Nightlife Jersey’s Nightlife, can be fairly predictable. If you’re looking for something a little more up market, head to Rojo’s Cocktail bar, the assortment on offer is unlike any other in Jersey whilst the atmosphere is classic and understated. Rojo’s host several popular events typically on Saturdays which include a mixture of well-known DJ’s. Dating back to the 12th Century Chillingham Castle has been continuously owned by the family of the Earls Grey and their relations; today it’s considered one of the most haunted castles in the UK. Chillingham features alarming dungeons and a torture chamber and holds regular ‘Ghost Hunts’. With ghostly tales and reported encounters visitors try to spot some of the castle’s reported other-worldly inhabitants. The castle had a record 8 executions; the ghosts of those are thought to still haunt the castle today, other reports include that of the ghost of Lady Mary, a blue boy, and even a tortured child.

Is said to be one of the most haunted places in the county, thought to have connections to the Royalists during the Civil War two duellists have been reported to haunt the Great Chamber. Often tapping sounds are heard coming from the wine cellar whilst the ghost of the Grey Lady has been seen around the house though perhaps the most famous is the pet ape, accidentally entombed in a secret passage behind the Great Chamber. Though never seen, it is said you can often hear it scratching from the panels as it tries to escape.

Henry VI is said to haunt Wakefield Tower only on the yearly anniversary of his death pacing until the clock strikes midnight, whilst the White Tower is consumed by the scent of perfume thought to belong to the White Lady, often seen to be waving at school children. There have been several sightings of Queen Anne Boleyn who was arrested and beheaded on the 19th of May 1536 for high treason.

If you’re looking to increase the amount of “green” on the planet or just in your wallet by dropping your fuel expenditure, here’s a look at 2014’s most eco-friendly cars.

1: Peugeot 308 BlueHDI 120 – 91.1mpg, 82g/km CO2 It’s no surprise to see a small, frugal diesel engine leading the fuel economy stakes. Peugeot’s 308 - the 2014 European Car of the Year - returns an incredible 91.1mpg combined with just 82g/km CO2 when fitted with the French firm’s BlueHDI 120hp 1.6 turbodiesel unit. How long will it be before we see a conventionally fuelled family car that breaks the 100mpg barrier?

3: Hyundai i20 1.1CRDi – 88.3mpg, 84g/km CO2 When Hyundai facelifted the i20 supermini, part of the package of revisions included the launch of a super-efficient diesel model, using the firm’s excellent 1.1-litre three-cylinder engine. In eco-orientated Blue trim, it emits just 84g/km and averages an impressive 88.3mpg. Combined with great value prices, Hyundai has a compelling deal – one of the greenest regular-engined road cars, for one of the best-value prices on the road.

5: Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI 110 Bluemotion – 88.3mpg, 85g/km CO2 Yet another Volkswagen Golf variant that nails its brief perfectly, the 110hp Golf Bluemotion’s 1.6-litre turbodiesel unit will cover an incredible 88.3 miles for every gallon of juice it sips. With a projected range of more than 900 miles per tank, assuming an average of around 1012,000 miles per year, it means you might only have to fill up 11 times in 12 months.

7: Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTI 95 – 85.6mpg, 88g/km CO2 Given the Fiesta is much newer than the Vauxhall Corsa, with much newer engines, too, the Vauxhall’s older, smaller 1.3 turbodiesel returns similar power and similar fuel economy from 0.3 litres less. It offers exactly the same fuel economy as the Ford at 85.6mpg combined. Even at 3g/km CO2 more, it won’t make a difference to road tax – it’s still free. There’s a new Corsa coming soon, though, so expect even more.

9: Citroen C3 1.4 e-HDI Airdream – 83.1mpg, 87g/km CO2 Not to be outdone by its parent firm Peugeot, Citroen has also made its most fuelefficient supermini yet. The Citroen C3 in Airdream guise emits just 87g/km CO2. This equates to diesel fuel economy of 83.1mpg. 2: Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 90 Eco 2 – 88.3mpg, 83g/km CO2 We know first hand just how efficient the Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 90 Eco2 is – we’ve got one and it’s delivering impressive real-world fuel economy. In real-world conditions, we’ve seen more than 84mpg, so with a very careful right foot and some clever hypermiling techniques, we’re confident Renault’s claims of 88.3mpg with 83g/km CO2 would be achievable.

6: Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCI 95 Econetic – 85.6mpg, 85g/km CO2 The UK’s favourite car is the sixth most economical one - when it comes to petrol and diesel, that is. Returning efficiency like this and combining it with the Fiesta’s traditional feisty driving dynamics, it’s no surprise it’s so popular. Ford’s most frugal supermini will return a claimed 85.6mpg with 85g/km CO2, meaning like every car before it, it’s road tax free.

8: Peugeot 208 1.4 e-HDI EGC – 83.1mpg, 87g/ km CO2 With the 208, Peugeot has made its prettiest supermini since the classic 205. But it’s not just an attractive face: the super-efficient 1.4-litre e-HDi engine is also very fuel-efficient too. It is capable of returning up to 83.1mpg and emits just 87g/km, with a clever and seamless stop-start system cutting inner-city exhaust emissions as well, like many cars on this list.

Suddenly you’re a godsend, savage is not a word EVER heard, you aren’t stealing people you’re presenting opportunities, raising the talent and knowledge of the company you have been retained by. If you are a client in the know, you have me on Speed Dial. In today’s world the term headhunter is heard less often, it has transformed and instead you will hear of Talent Acquisition Specialists, Search and Selection Consultants or my personal favourite ‘The Corporate Handyman’ (or woman). No matter the term the definition is the same, views have extended beyond the distastefulness a headhunter used to experience.

For the client we are a natural part of the corporate function, a needed and valued service in these times of elevated competition, so much so that many companies now encourage their own resourcing teams to include headhunting as part of the overall recruitment strategy. Deutsche Bank CI Welcomes New Head of Compliance Deutsche Bank has appointed Nadia Lewis to the position of Head of Channel Islands Compliance.

A practising solicitor and MBA graduate from the London Metropolitan Business School, Nadia joins Deutsche Bank from the RBS Group, where she most recently held the position of Head of Conduct Standards for RBS Group Compliance in London. Returning to Jersey, where she was educated and worked for a number of years, Nadia brings with her significant expertise in a broad range of legal, secretariat, regulatory risk and compliance issues. Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank CI commented: “With Nadia’s wealth of experience in compliance related issues, we are confident that her skills will allow us to further build on the success already realised through Linda’s hard work. The C5 Alliance Group is pleased to announce that Gary Stewart has been promoted to Team Leader of its growing Business Intelligence team of 11. Gary, who has worked at C5 for over 3 years managing a wide range of business solutions projects, replaces company Director Dan Hare who will be leaving to provide an innovative new virtual information strategy service to clients. Dan Hare, commented: “While I have immensely enjoyed the last 10 years at C5 building the Business Intelligence team, I am excited to have an opportunity to specialise in an area that I am passionate about, namely data and information strategy. This is becoming an area of increasing importance for many clients and I look forward to working with them to provide outsourced support in this area.”
