Broadcast from London’s O2 Arena, Monty Python Live (mostly) will be screened at Jersey Opera House on Thursday 28th August at 7pm. Flybe, Europe’s largest independent regional airline, has announced a new FlyShuttle service that, with effect from 26th October, 2014 gives customers the opportunity to travel all the way from Jersey to Aberdeen on one flight, with brief stops at Southampton and Leeds. It is a ‘hop-on, hop off’ service that will operate three times a day both northbound and southbound. The FlyShuttle schedule originates at both north and southbound destinations with first flights departing Aberdeen and Jersey at 0700. Customers can purchase tickets either for direct connections between any of the four airports, or stay on board whilst passengers embark and disembark at airports on the way to their final destination. A respite home for children and young people with learning disabilities and/or associated conditions is to reopen following the completion of the first phase of a thorough refurbishment.

Maison Allo in St Saviour has been a children’s respite home for 12 years. Although the property is owned by Jersey Mencap, it is operated by Les Amis and its services are commissioned by Health and Social Services. The accommodation comprises four bedrooms for respite users, communal lounge area, kitchen, utility room and two bathrooms. The home provides respite care in a safe and relaxed environment for children and young people with a mild to moderate learning disability, and/or associated conditions, between the ages of five to 18 years. Les Amis works closely with parents and carers to deliver care that meets the needs of each child and their family. Respite care is the provision of short-term, temporary relief to those who care for family members. Those using the local facility do not necessarily require 24-hour care as many of Les Amis respite users, from adults to children; enjoy fulfilling and rewarding lives by working and attending college or school. However, there are occasions when their parent or carers need the support of respite care due to other commitments or simply to give them a break. The need for additional respite spaces was identified by Scrutiny in 2012 and is part of Health’s long-term strategy to be provided

Better service for mental health issues A joint project between the Health and Social Services Department, local GPs and the charity MIND Jersey will provide an enhanced range of psychological therapies for Islanders. As part of the campaign to remove the stigma that has been associated with mental health issues, Jersey Talking Therapies (JTT) will be delivered in GP surgeries or from a central town hub, with an additional option of phone therapy for those who prefer it. JTT, scheduled to launch in Autumn 2014, is for adults of all ages and covers many common mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, obsessive compul-

sive disorder, phobias, panic and posttraumatic stress disorder. Help will also be available for those who are concerned that excessive drinking may be harming their health. Access to qualified professional therapists will be straightforward – people will have easy access and have the ability to telephone a helpline for advice and support and also access the service from normal routes such as GP surgeries. Individuals seeking help will be given leaflets about JTT including contact details. Those who call the service are provided an appointment time over the phone, and from this point onwards the service is free-of-charge.

Young Indigo Named Island Games Mascot! A young silverback gorilla born at Durrell Wildlife Park has been named the 2015 Island Games mascot. It’s the first time a living ambassador has been made the mascot. In 2012 Indigo was the first new gorilla birth at the park in a decade. The Island Games will see thousands of athletes from small islands around the world head to Jersey to compete in a range of sports. Organisers say Indigo was chosen to represent the spirit and values of the games because of his youth and energy. Phil Austin, chairman of the Jersey 2015 organising committee, said “Indigo is young, energetic and active, and with the right encouragement, diet and exercise will grow into a strong Silverback.” Lee Durrell, Honorary Director of Durrell, said she was thrilled Indigo had been chosen as a mascot and would impress visitors with his “lively antics and boyish charm”.

The Prufund Growth (Sterling) Fund The PruFund Growth (Sterling) Fund was launched in November 2008 and to date has grown by 74%. This equates to OVER 1% PER MONTH gross before charges or over 13% per year as an annualised return. This is just over 10% a year after all charges. The fund is for those who are more adventurous as there are more equities in this fund than the Prufund Cautious (Sterling) Fund. Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil, 1 garlic clove chooped, 1 lemon - juiced, 25g dill leaves chopped, 1 bunch lemon thyme, sea salt, pepper and 4 salmon fillets - skin on.

Method

1. Combine oil, garlic, lemon juice, dill and lemon thyme into a jug and season with salt and pepper. 2. Place salmon into a large dish and pour over half the marinade, turn salmon over and pour over remaining marinade. Leave in the refrigerator for 2 -3 hours removing the dish 30 minutes before cooking. 3. Preheat the barbecue and add salmon skin side up, for 3 minutes. Turn and barbecue, brushing occasionally with marinade, for 4 to 6 minutes or until just cooked through.

Ingredients 2 red peppers, 1 onion - diced, 250g spinach, 8 olives, 1 garlic clove - chopped, 8 slices of goat cheese 1 tbsp fresh oregano, Salt and pepper.

Method

1. Preheat BBQ. 2. Cut peppers in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds and membranes. Coat with olive oil and sprinkle all over with salt and pepper. Place the peppers on the barbecue skin side down, cover and cook for about 10 minutes, then turn and cook for about 4 more minutes. The peppers should be soft, but still hold their shape. Set aside. 3. Add a little oil to a large pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and cook for about 3 minutes. Add the garlic, cook for about 2 more minutes and add the spinach, stirring occasionally, until wilted. 4. Spoon mixture into peppers and add the oregano, olives and goat cheese and return to the barbie for a few minutes.

Skipton International launch range of expat buy-to-let mortgages Skipton International has launched a new lending product range to enable British expats to take advantage of the opportunities available in the UK’s residential buy-to-let market. Barclays supports first time home buyers in Trinity 13

FIRST time home buyers in Jersey have been given a welcome step onto the property ladder thanks to an assisted purchase housing development in Trinity and a flexible mortgage from Barclays.

The housing development provides a range of first time buyer homes for islanders with a parish connection. Designed to be ‘homes for life’, the scheme saw 44 new homes built in total, including 39 new family homes plus five properties designed especially for the over 55s. The scheme works by the Parish agreeing to provide a loan of up to one third of the purchase consideration at zero interest rate but subject to repayment at the time of the disposal of the property on the basis of one third of the then current value. Barclays is then able to offer qualifying first time buyers a 100% mortgage for the remainder of the purchase price. The homeowner then pays off their

loan over a standard term, and when the property is sold, the parish is repaid as detailed above.

JT speeds ahead with fibre broadband 19

More than eight thousand (8,479) fibre broadband customers have had their service upgraded two weeks ahead of schedule.

Leeds Distribution Warehouse Purchase Le Masurier have furthered their sizeable UK investment programme by recently acquiring a substantial distribution warehouse, extending to in excess of 74,000 square feet on the Cross Green Industrial Estate in Leeds.

Le Masurier paid £5.7m, which equates to an equivalent yield of 6.25%, with a reversionary yield rising to 7% at review.

JT has now completed this phase of its improvements to the island’s broadband services; it involved improving the download speeds for all customers already on the new fibre broadband network to at least a guaranteed 50 Mb/s. The upgrade is to the network itself, so benefits customers of all providers.

JT’s Head of Commercial Development, Dominic Vye commented: “We are really pleased that our fibre broadband customers in Jersey can now enjoy an even quicker service. We have delivered this upgrade to the network on budget and ahead of schedule, and I would like to thank the JT team who have achieved that.

Customers on the guaranteed 50 Mb/s fibre service pay from £22.99 a month, which is one of the lowest prices in the world for a comparable service. For example, in Guernsey Sure charge £34.99 a month for an ‘up to’ 40 Mb/s broadband service.

“Our customers told us they wanted a smaller, and simpler, range of products, and better ‘entry-level’ broadband speeds, and that is exactly what we are now able to deliver. To put it in context, we have seen the average data downloads quadruple in just 18 months alone. All fibre customers will now be able to access speeds of at least 50 Mb/s, from £22.99 per month, which is one of the best packages on offer in the world”.

More than 33% of JT customers have now been switched to the new fibre network, with all other broadband users being switched before the end of 2016.

The most popular ‘app’ in Jersey, BBC iPlayer HD, needs a service of at least 3.2Mb/s to work properly, whilst customers who subscribe to Netflix’s new ‘ultra-high’ defini-

tion streaming service need at least 25 mb/s, and stable connection speeds. Fibre broadband delivers that, as well as allowing more family members to use the internet smoothly and quickly at the same time. One of the benefits of fibre broadband is that it allows operators to guarantee the broadband speed delivered to a customer’s router. The actual speed achieved by any device in their home will always depend on the individual device or software being used by the customer, and the number of devices connected at any one time.

Institute of Directors debate to explore population control An expert panel of speakers at this year’s Jersey Institute of Directors’ Annual Debate will discuss how Jersey should approach managing population levels and immigration in order to remain a successful international business centre and an attractive place to live.

Counter offers and their place in a company’s retention strategy is nothing new, however the current ‘Counter Offer Culture’ is one that has been developing more steadily over the last year. Many employees are still apprehensive of leaving the security of their company and this in addition to sustained job market growth means it is commonplace once again to have more client vacancies than there are qualified candidates to fill them. This is great news for Economic Growth but it is exactly this that has fuelled the current ‘Counter Offer Culture’.

What does this mean for the employee? Often it means a fairly sizeable salary increase from your current employer sometimes complimented by a new job title and a speech concerning how valuable you are to them. What is the flip side? Often companies will grow to resent employees they later see as having ‘extorted’ money from them, your loyalty will be in question and you will have

As tempting as it may seem, there is rarely, if ever, a good reason to accept a counter offer and when faced with this situation the candidate must ask themselves why they decided to leave to begin with. In a market that is once again becoming candidate driven it is no surprise that companies will do whatever it takes to keep hold of their employees giving several reasons why counter offers are made. The most common being the cost of replacing you and the associated cost of your position being vacant until a replacement can be sourced. It is a fact that companies are finding it increasingly difficult to source qualified and skilled professionals so why not hang on to the ones they already have?
