Avoid pooch problems when travelling Jersey wedding prices could increase The price of getting married in Jersey could increase if the MTFP’s approved in September. It could see £112,000 shaved off the Superintendent Registrar’s budget – cutting taxpayer subsidies for Registry office weddings. It’s likely the cost of some nuptials will increase – with civil and non-Anglican ceremonies most likely to be affected.

St Helier regeneration Government departments are collaborating to improve living and environmental standards in St Helier, and to redevelop the capital to be a more attractive place to live, work and visit. The regeneration project will create a vision for Future St Helier to focus investment in public space; travel and transport; improved standards for new and affordable homes and rental accommodation; and the delivery of high quality office space. A new Movement Strategy will identify opportunities to traffic-calm streets and reclaim space for pedestrians, cyclists and shoppers, whilst creating opportunities for new tree planting. Andium will invest £200 million over four years to deliver affordable, quality housing that is also environmentally friendly and in line with the Island’s long-term goals of reducing emissions and energy consumption. The States of Jersey Development Company will invest more than £150 million to build grade A office space. This will meet both the demand of expanding businesses and attract valuable inward investment. These new office developments will, in turn, free up older office buildings to be transformed into residential properties.

Over the last two years the States Veterinary Service has seen a significant increase in the number of pets that don’t comply with the import requirements. The service is dealing with pet importation problems, on average, twice a week, as a result of people not following the regulations. The rules are in place so that Jersey remains free from certain animal and human diseases, so some animals are put into quarantine until the animals can be cleared for import, or re-exported. The owners are responsible for all costs, such as transport, vet treatment and kennelling, which can be in the region of £800 for each animal. The States Vet advises that if you are bringing a dog, cat or ferret into Jersey for rehoming or sale, even if no money changes hands or you are transporting it for somebody else, it’s classed as a commercial movement and you can’t use the Pet Travel Scheme. Stephen Sagar said “Jersey is a very animal friendly Island

and there’s a lot of demand for pets, but anyone thinking of buying or re-homing a dog or cat from mainland Europe must get it from a reputable source and find out about and follow the regulations. The rules are in place for good reason – to avoid bringing in

a sick pet that may need a vet treatment or that is carrying a serious infectious disease that could affect other animals or people.”

to check their pet passports, to make sure that the rabies vaccination dates are valid for the whole duration of their stay, before they travel.

The States Vet is also advising people about to travel abroad this summer with their own pets

Using the Pet Travel Scheme pet owners can travel with their own pets within the EU.

Details of extra £2m university funding About 90 more students could receive the full student grant from 2017 as a result of the extra £2 million funding for higher education set out in the Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP). The States student grant is made up of two elements; tuition fees paid to the university and a maintenance grant for living expenses. The scheme is meanstested according to how much the student’s household earns. If the funding is agreed by the States in the MTFP debate

September, the Education Department will raise the household income thresholds and increase the maintenance grant so that more students receive financial help from the States. Final details are still being worked out but with the additional £2 million it is likely that: •The full maintenance grant will increase from £5,500 a year to £6,000. •Up to 90 students are likely to qualify for the full maintenance grant and maximum tuition fees (usually £9,000) to be paid. This is because the lower household

income threshold will increase from £26,750 to £34,500. •Approximately 500 students in the middle income bands (above £34,500 but below the maximum of £99,000) will receive a larger financial contribution from the States. •About 30 students who are currently not eligible for any States support will now receive an amount. This is because the household income threshold would rise from £91,000 to £99,000. If annual household income is above £99,000 the student would not be eligible for any States grant.

If approved, the changes will come into effect in September 2017.

The Barclays Duck gets a classy outfit The Barclays Duck will wear a top hat for the 2017 Barclays Jersey Boat Show. The design, which will feature at the 10th anniversary of the Show, is the work of Tegan Clapham (age 9) and was chosen in a public vote on the Barclays’ Facebook Page. Tegan completed her design after collecting a form from this year’s Jersey Boat Show. With next year being the 10th anniversary of the show, Tegan wanted to feature a number 10 on the duck. She said: “I wanted bright colours so it would stand out and I thought the hat would be silly and fun”. Upon finding out the result of the competition, Tegan said: “I felt really excited to win. I was in France when I found out that my duck had been shortlisted. We were on a campsite so did not have internet access, we had to keep going to Wi-Fi areas to check how top hat duck was doing!” The organising panel for the Boat Show acted as judges and picked their three favourite designs from the entries. These were then posted on Barclays’ Facebook page to allow the public to ‘like’ their preferred design. The 2017 ducks will be created using the top hat design and

Tegan will have the exclusive chance to see the duck before the show. The competition was open to children aged 11 and under. Entrants were allowed to use any materials they liked to create their design, including crayons, paint and pencils. Contestants had the option to submit their entries in the Barclays branch or on social media. Many entries were completed at the Show itself as Barclays had a duck competition area in the hospitality marquee. The duck itself has become an icon of the Barclays Jersey Boat Show since its first appearance in 2010. It is a firm favourite with children and adults alike playing the ‘Hook a Duck’ game at the Show. This year’s duck helped raise £17,577 for Mind Jersey and The Royal Navy and Royal Marine Charity. Every year the duck has a new look and many islanders collect the different editions. The 2016 duck featured a rainbow design created by Holly Freitas at her Brownie group. While the 2015 duck featured a British Red Cross inspired design to mark the 70th anniversary of Liberation Day. Paul Savery, managing director

of Barclays in Jersey, said: “We are really thrilled with the top hat design; it is a great look for a 10th anniversary celebration. It was a good idea of Tegan’s to include the number 10 as well! We’re sure that with the help of the new design we’ll be able to raise another fantastic amount for charity at the 2017 Show.”

would be a loss to the island.

The plans include a new multistory car park and knocking down the 1937 arrivals building.

"Why is it that the interesting, genuine, historical, architectural artefact has to be knocked down in order to replace it on virtually the same footprint?

The building, which has already lost two floors due to safety concerns, has been called "unsafe" by airport bosses.

"If we ended up with what they're going to build... it won't be horrible, but we'll have something that's not genuine anymore."

But Christopher Scholefield, from Save Jersey's Heritage, said plans to demolish the Art Deco terminal

Group chief executive officer of Jersey's airport and harbours, Doug Bannister, said: "It's actually

not so original because it's been added to year after year... over the decades. "It's an obstacle and what that means is it's too big and too close to the runway. It's currently unsafe."

Ministers given demo of a French seaweed harvester The Ministers for Infrastructure and the Environment have visited France to find out more about a seaweed harvesting machine and watch it in action on one of France’s north coast beaches. Problems with sea lettuce are common throughout the world. Both the Infrastructure and Environment departments have been investigating the causes of the periodic high amounts of the seaweed being washed onto our beaches. They have also been exploring how other places deal with it.

The machine used is considered too large for Jersey, but talks will continue with Agrival regarding the specification of a suitable machine. It is hoped that the French machine may be trialled in St Aubin’s Bay sometime this month. This is dependent on the availability of the machine and the cost of running the trial.

could potentially be adapted for use in Jersey.

Seaweed is a particularly difficult material to handle and the environment of sand and salt water makes any engineering solution problematic. Agrival’s machine provides solution which

Minister for the Environment Deputy Steve Luce, said “I was particularly pleased to see that although the machine was very large, there was no damage done to the beach.”

Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel said “It was very impressive to see the French seaweed harvester in action. It would be great if we can find a way to make a version of it feasible for use in Jersey.”

During the visit, the ministers saw a specially built seaweed harvesting machine, one of only two in operation, which collects the seaweed in shallow water (500mm depth) before it comes to rest on the beach. It is a huge, well-engineered and costly machine that provides a practical solution. Contractors Agrival remove the seaweed and convert it into other products including fertiliser and animal feed. The ministers visited the factory where the seaweed is washed and prepared for the next process.

Community Award gives young people vital skills The recent “Jersey Sings!” project, which saw 1400 primary school children perform at Fort Regent, has been hailed as a great success. Projects like this don’t happen without a considerable amount of hard work and commitment from those behind the scenes.

to future work opportunities in line with Barclays’ key aims of helping young people obtain employment. As well as working on “Jersey Sings!, the participants had the opportunity to provide support to others including the Liberation International Music Festival, The Arts Centre and Fort Regent.

Organising charity Music in Action, received financial support from the Barclays Community Awards, to provide 45 young people with the opportunity to develop event management and business skills, by working on the “Jersey Sings!” project since its launch in January.

They have been encouraged to increase their digital skills by working on their Barclays Digital Driving Licence. This provides practical guidance and tuition through themed modules, interactive articles and quizzes.

Participants of the scheme were responsible for planning the event, were able to work alongside experts in these fields, as well as attending a series of workshops, and placements. The aim of the Outreach programme was to develop skills with a view

Working with the Back to Work team, Music in Action also recruited three team members through the Community Jobs Fund, a States of Jersey initiative. By carrying out vital administration roles, these recruits have provided invaluable support including

producing the schools information packs, coordinating event logistics and photography. The STEPs team from the Jersey Employment Trust had the mammoth task of packaging all of the school packs, t- shirts, water bottles and torches at Acorn Enterprises. Music in Action also worked with other agencies including; Jersey Youth Service, The Princes Trust, Careers Jersey, Victoria Prep School and Butterfly Training.

Regular criminal record checks for taxi-cab drivers drivers where they will be notified of any status changes regarding elements of the DBS check.

Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) is introducing regular criminal record checks for taxicab drivers to increase the protection of safety for the public. From 1st October, taxi-cab drivers will have to show they’ve completed an enhanced disclosure and barring service check within the last three years and every three years thereafter. Previously, drivers had a standard DBS check when applying for their taxi-cab public service vehicle (PSV) drivers’ badge. The Inspector of Motor Traffic has the power to deny or revoke a licence.

This is the latest in the programme of improvements being introduced by Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel. In 2015, the Minister said that he'd introduce new rules regarding DBS checks as the improvement of public safety was a high priority in his plans. It's hoped DVS will eventually move to continuous monitoring of taxi-cab

A standard DBS disclosure provides information to third parties for people that are involved with working with the public including children or vulnerable adults. The standard disclosure contains details of all local recorded convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings. An enhanced DBS check involves an added level of inspection including Jersey Court Records, checks with the Police National Computer and relevant UK Departments.

Ex honorary jailed for child sex images A former honorary policeman has been jailed for three years for making and distributing child abuse images.

Hawksford employees took on Three Peaks Challenge A group of Hawksford employees took part in the National Three Peaks Challenge in June, raising £2,500 for two local charities.

© States of Jersey Police

He admitted three counts of making indecent images and one count of distribution at the Royal Court. Luce's actions came to light after he contacted a 13-year-old girl on Facebook. Her mother informed her daughter's school and police were alerted. The nature of the messages was not indecent but Luce had asked the girl not to tell anyone. He had collected 1,731 images and 29 films over five years. A number were classified as level five. Luce was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for at least five years.

Cost of living rises

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing three of the highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland – Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis - within 24 hours. The team have been collecting sponsorships, with all proceeds going towards Durrell Conservation Trust and Mind Jersey. The 24-hour challenge included both walking time and travel between the mountains – approximately 14 hours hill walking and a further ten hours driving. The three mountains sit at a combined height of 3,000 feet, the equivalent of scaling the Shard 10 times or climbing half way up Kilimanjaro.

The Hawksford team started the challenge at the base of Scotland’s Ben Nevis. After completing the mountain’s 1,345m climb in an average

team time of six hours and 30 minutes, the team travelled to Scafell Pike in the Lake District to commence a 978m ascent in the early morning. After completing

the second leg of the challenge in approximately three and a half hours, the team travelled to Snowdon and scaled the final 1,085m in just over four hours.

The cost of living in Jersey has risen by 1.5% in the past year. Expenses such as school fees, postage and phone bills were the biggest contributors to inflation, with the cost of Household Services jumping 5%. The latest RPI Index shows a 4% rise for tobacco and alcohol, while higher rents and water charges pushed up Housing costs by 2%. Food prices are largely unchanged, but fuel prices were down 7% per cent, thanks to a 13 pence per litre drop in domestic heating oil. Gas, electricity, petrol and clothing costs have stayed the same.

Be a daredevil for dementia Local thrill-seekers are being encouraged to ‘Be a Daredevil for Dementia’ this summer to help raise funds to support the work of Jersey Alzheimer’s Association (JAA). Supporters have already booked a group skydive for 4th September, and preparations are being finalized for a sponsored abseil down Mont Orgueil Castle over the weekend of 20th and 21st August.

And with the growth in popularity of extreme sports and other active pursuits, the charity is hoping to inspire Islanders seeking a new challenge to come up with daring and exciting ideas to raise funds. Mark Blamey, manager at Jersey Alzheimer’s Association, said: “Jersey is a great place to try a range of adventurous and outdoor activities, especially in the summer, and we’re keen to

encourage anyone do something a bit ordinary to consider JAA as well as themselves.”

THROWBACK The topless ban was lifted in the mid to late 1930s, allowing men to finally bare their chests on the beach. At this point in time, function overruled modesty when it came to swimwear design, and fitted, short trunks A group of men sunbathing in 1939 featuring draw strings or decorative belts were popular throughout the late 30s, 40s and 50s. Although functional, these designs were far more revealing than anything that had been worn by men in previous decades. Daisylicious In Victorian times, young, heartbroken women who wished to be loved began a custom using the daisy. A young maiden would pluck a daisy's petals, one by one, and sing, "He loves me, he loves me not," as she pulled each petal, the last petal plucked would be the future of her relationship. Each flower has a message, according to the Language of Flowers - the daisy brings a message of innocence and purity.

Benefits of Juicing 95% of all the nutrients contained within fruits and vegetables is contained within the juice. Making fresh juice a part of a wellbalanced, plant-based diet is an important tool for achieving good health. Juicing offers many lifeenhancing health benefits including a faster, more efficient way to absorb immune boosting nutrients naturally found in fruits and vegetables. It provides a way to access digestive enzymes typically locked away in the fibre matrix of whole fruits and vegetables.

fibre from vegetables and fruits. While fibre is an established, important part of an overall healthy diet, removing the insoluble fibre allows for increased absorption of specific health promoting phytonutrients including enzymes, while the soluble fibre persists into the juice. By removing the fibres and consuming fruits and vegetables in liquid form, we are providing a nutrient delivery system to our bodies that allows individuals who would otherwise have difficulty consuming whole vegetables, the opportunity to reap the numerous benefits vegetables have to offer. For example, a pound of carrots can be a significant source of calcium and protein, but those ten carrots may be more than you’re willing to eat at a single meal.

Unlike Juice 4 Life’s products most commercial juices are processed and lacking in nutrition while freshly juiced fruits and vegetables are loaded with an abundance of vitamins, minerals and Not only are fruit and vegetable phytonutrients. juices your best convenience Drinking fresh juice can help us adopt healthier eating patterns. For those of us who do not traditionally consume many fruits and vegetables, incorporating fresh juice can be a fun and different approach to increasing consumption of these important plant foods for improved health and wellness and reaching your weight loss goals. How does it work? Juicing removes the

foods, they provide thousands of substances, some of which have well-known functions, and some whose roles in the human body are not yet understood or recognised. Current wisdom recognises three roles that fruit and vegetables play in the human body: Fruits and vegetables provide nutrients essential for growth and renewal Fruits and some vegetables contain substantial amounts of

carbohydrates which supply most of the energy we use to live and perform work, they also have generous amounts of vitamins. Vitamins regulate metabolism and help in the conversion of the fats and carbohydrates into energy. Fruits and vegetables contain minerals that are necessary for the nerve and muscle function and are the building material for some body tissue. Fruits and vegetables have a protective effect Fruits and vegetables can protect the body from such major diseases as cancer and heart disease. Some are high in substances called antioxidants, such as beta carotene, Vitamins C and E and selenium, which are nutrients that protect cell membranes from the damage of free radicals. Some are rich in other anti-cancer compounds, this is especially true of the cruciferous family to which the cabbage belongs. Fruits and vegetables have a medicinal effect Fruits and vegetables can be your best non-prescription drugs. For example, blueberries are an effective anti-diarrheal agent, and ginger is as effective as wellpromoted motion-sickness drug, and new studies show that it also relieves nausea and stomach discomfort caused by pregnancy.

Mandy Phillips answers her clients questions... Mandy Phillips is an experienced personal trainer who has just launched her new website www.mandyphillipsfitness.co.uk, which includes online dietary advice, personal gym programs, downloadable fitness workouts and virtual cycling. She had a few of her clients interview her, and this is what they had to ask…

I chose you as my trainer as you were older, more experienced and had more qualifications. How can you ensure that I reach my goals and remain motivated? Andrew Tyrer, St Peter I’ve worked as a personal trainer and class teacher for 23 years and have obtained many qualifications including a degree in public health nutrition, certificate in exercise referral, highest level trainer and Pilates instructor and many more. I always ensure my client’s goals are realistic and achievable to avoid disappointment. I provide the guidance and the motivation but clients have to do the work. To maintain motivation I change the exercises every session depending on energy levels and requirements. I also combine gym, Pilates/stretch and outdoor training sessions to avoid boredom, plateau and injuries.

I have arthritis and occasional back problems, can I still train and will it help me? Helene Bonney, St Brelade Yes you still need to train and yes it will help alleviate the aches, stiffness and pains from osteoarthritis. Weight loss is key to relieving stress on the knees and muscle strengthening exercises will help to support the joint. Pilates and stretching can help with minor back

problems. Combined, training will help you complete everyday tasks like bending, lifting and reaching and promote a better quality of life.

How do I know if I am achieving my goals? Louise Warren, Maufant When you first begin to train with me I will check your weight, BMI, body fat %, measurements and a VO2 max test if required. These measurements are repeated every 3 months to ensure that you are still on track and review your training sessions to make new goals.

I am only able to train during school term time, how can I maintain my fitness levels when the children are on holiday? Anne Marie Troy, St Clement You can involve the children in your activity, for example doing a fitness DVD or you can be involved in the children’s activities such as outdoor games in the park or on the beach. I have three fitness classes available to download on my website, they’re

designed for busy people and are a no frills 20 minutes high intensity exercise routine requiring no equipment. So, if you are unable to train with me or do not have the time or the finances to join a gym, check out training online.

You have just launched a new website, tell us about it… Weight loss is mainly achieved through diet so if you think you are eating healthy and still not losing weight let me analyse your diet and make a few changes to help. Fitness and muscle tone is achieved through training the body, if you can’t get to me but need a program to follow either in the gym or at home, just contact me and tell me what type of equipment you have access to, if any, and I will email you a tailored program. If you are really short of time then download one of my 20 minute HIIT in the home videos and do it whilst the dinner is cooking. Have an exercise bike gathering dust? Download my virtual cycling video and imagine you’re cycling around Jersey to motivate you. Following a very successful fitness day in January, Mandy will be doing another full day on Saturday 27th August from 10am - 4pm in Les Ormes Village. The day will include three fitness classes, nutrition lectures and meditation to end the day. Places are limited and the £55 needs to be paid by August 20th. For more info and to reserve your place contact Mandy on 07700328730 or email onestopfitness1@gmail.com

Future Health: A healthier you to create healthy offices No matter how well a workstation is designed or how active you are, sitting for long periods of time slows down the body’s metabolism and slows the breaking down process of fat reserves, increasing blood glucose levels & blood pressure. A person may hit the gym daily or every alternate day, but if they’re spending quite a good deal of their time sitting, they are not leading an active life-style over all. It’s just like working out and eating an unhealthy diet or smoking. Working at a computer often involves very few changes in body position. This lack of movement leads to muscle pain and strain resulting in a loss of concentration and productivity. It’s simple, when you feel pain you don’t focus 100%. It can be stressful when time is going too fast and you have lots to do. Stress is one of the main causes of various illnesses and pains. Simple stretch classes will improve your posture, circulation, increase job

satisfaction, energy levels and reduce ‘’text neck syndrome’’ (soreness in the neck, chronic headache, pain in the neck, back, shoulders, arms, hands, wrists and elbows), common problems for those working in offices. Massages will offer short time relief but the secret to a relaxed body and mind is stretching regularly. You can do stretch sessions with your colleagues before work, on your lunch or during business meetings to refocus and revitalise. Take care of yourself. Invest in yourself. 20 minute sessions were created for people who spend a lot of time in the office. You don’t need a lot of space so keep calm and stretch with Future Health, a dedicated program specifically designed for the work environment. Food & Drink

THE TASTE OF AUGUST (All of our recipes are gluten free, but you can adapt them if you don’t need to follow a gluten free diet.)

Blackberry Crumble No kitchen experience needed here, this fruity pudding is incredibly easy to make, perfect for a beginner. This recipe serves 6

All things blackberry

Prep: 15 mins | Cook: 55 mins Total time: 60 mins

Every year we pick our own blackberries and make an assortment of fresh desserts. Although wild blackberries are usually smaller than those grown commercially, they’re delicious and can be picked when they are perfectly ripe.

For the top: • 225g caster sugar

Ingredients For the filling: • 400g blackberries • 115g sugar • 1 tbsp gf all purpose flour

• 125g gf all purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 whole egg • 115g butter, melted

Picking Tips ■ Blackberry juice will stain hands and clothing, and the brambles are covered in many sharp thorns so wear something old and sturdy and give small children gloves. ■ The best blackberries are those which have grown on plants in direct sunlight. Often the best blackberries will be found in difficult to reach positions. ■ Only pick berries above knee height which will not have been urinated on by dogs! Pick only the fully black blackberries under-ripe berries will not ripen further once picked. ■ Once you get the blackberries home, place them in a large bowl and cover them with cold water. Add a teaspoon of salt to kill any bugs and let them stand for a couple of hours. Then rinse them thoroughly under cold running water. ■ If you do not intend to use the berries for a few days, refrigerate them unwashed so they do not spoil, or wash them and pack them into an air tight bag or container for immediate freezing.

Instructions ■ Preheat oven to 180˚C

■ In a medium sized bowl add the filling ingredients and stir

until they are combined and there is no longer any sugar or flour on the bottom of your bowl, set aside. ■ In another medium bowl add the sugar, flour and baking powder, lightly stir with a fork to combine. Once combined make a well in the centre of your bowl and add the egg, stirring until your mixture becomes small crumbs. ■ Place blackberry mixture in an ungreased dish and add over the crumb topping, spreading it evenly over the blackberries. ■ Drizzle the melted butter on top of crumb mixture and bake for 45-55 minutes or until golden brown. ■ Serve with a freshly brewed pot of tea, and don’t hold back on the whipped cream!

Mini Berry Pavlovas Pavlova is a meringuebased dessert named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. (No use to you whatsoever, just a quirky fact.) This recipe makes 6 Prep: 15 mins | Cook: 55 mins Total time: 60 mins Ingredients Meringues: 4 egg whites 220g caster sugar Cream: 150ml double cream 1/2 tub mascapone 2 tbsp Icing Sugar Topping: 300g blackberries

Instructions ■ Preheat oven to 150°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. ■ Place egg whites into a clean bowl. Beat with electric beaters until soft peaks form. Gradually add caster sugar, beating well between each addition. Beat until mixture is thick and glossy, this will take at least 5 minutes. ■ Spoon heaped tablespoons or piped swirls of the mixture onto baking trays. Flatten meringue into a disc. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until crisp. Cool completely in the oven with the door ajar. ■ Gently mix together cream, mascapone and icing sugar. ■ Arrange meringues on a serving dish. Spoon cream mixture into centres of meringues. Decorate with fruit and serve immediately.

Flourless Blackberry Chocolate Cake A rich flourless chocolate cake made with fruit and veg! This recipe serves 4 Prep: 20 mins | Cook: 60 mins Total time: 1 hour 20 mins Ingredients • 50g fresh blackberries, pulsed • 50g blackberries, garnish • 100g sweet potato • 60g cocoa powder • 50g almond meal • 25g dark chocolate, melted • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1 tbsp water • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda

Instructions ■ Peel the sweet potato, cut into chunks and bake at 200°C for about 40 minutes or until soft. ■ Preheat the oven to 175°C ■ Melt chocolate over a pan of simmering water and set aside to cool at room temperature. ■ Add the blackberries to a food processor or blender and pulse until smooth - you don't want to make a juice out of these, just a really good pulsed mash with chunks. Set aside. ■ In a small mixing bowl, combine the water, baking soda, baking powder and apple cider vinegar. ■ In a food processor, combine melted coconut oil, melted chocolate and sweet potato, scraping down the sides as needed. Add this mixture to the pulsed blackberries, stirring in

the cocoa powder and almond meal. ■ Add the ingredients from the small mixing bowl and stir until everything forms a batter. ■ Pour the cake batter into an 8-inch non-stick spring pan or cast iron skillet and bake for 60 minutes. ■ Let the cake cool slightly before removing. ■ Enjoy with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

A taste of Spain comes to town A new Spanish eatery, Casa Paco, has opened at 75/77 Central Market, offering an authentic selection of Spanish dishes such as tapas, bocadillos (Spanish Sandwiches) and a range of delicatessen specialities to tempt your taste buds whether for breakfast, lunch or an afternoon snack. Spanish cuisine has become very popular in recent years with many customers looking to recreate tastes from their holiday or to enjoy Mediterranean cooking (some of it for its health benefits) which focuses on quality ingredients. The inspiration behind Casa Paco is Paco Lora, who has lived in Jersey for over 25 years and is originally from Valencia, Spain. Paco said, “I have always enjoyed cooking. I learnt many traditional dishes and techniques from my grandmother, who herself originated from Seville, when I was growing up. I wanted to bring the explosion of tastes that are in Spanish cooking to Jersey”. The new venue is an expansion to Casa Paco’s successful existing business at Les Folies Harbour, which has just celebrated its first anniversary.

It is characterised by its red food trailer and focuses on authentic Spanish cooking utilising local fresh produce, it’s most popular dish being its infamous “grand-mother special” which is a Spanish sandwich with loin of pork, manchego cheese, Serrano ham and piquillo peppers. Casa Paco also offers Paella for six or more persons with 24 hours’ notice and outside catering.

You can find Casa Paco’s menu on their Facebook page “Casa Paco.”

Are you ready for Jersey Live 2016? Jersey Live Festival, The Channel Islands favourite Music & arts event, returns this September, with headline sponsors JT, for its 13th Annual Edition. Following the runaway success of last year’s event, which featured memorable performances from headliners THE VACCINES and RUDIMENTAL as well as a diverse line up of some of the world’s biggest acts including Years & Years, Clean Bandit and George Ezra, the organisers

expect this year to be even bigger and better than ever. House music giants Disclosure, who recently headlined Glastonbury’s Other Stage and Set to Headline Leeds & Reading Festivals, take the Headline slot on Saturday night at Jersey Live, with the legendary “Nutty Boys” Madness, who return to the festival after headlining the JL Main Stage in 2011 closing Main Stage on the Sunday night. Both will be joined by a special guest, former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft, who performs all the Verve Classics along with his new material with his own band in the penultimate slot before Disclosure on Saturday night, and chart-topping drum & bass

duo Sigma, who take to the stage on Sunday night ahead of

Madness. There is a big reshuffle of the site layout, with introductions of new attractions such as the ‘Secrets Beneath’ ‘Scare Maze’ and the Rojo ‘Wonky Factory’ Secret Garden theme, as well as the relocation of the fairground, Food village and Toilet Areas.

The 10,000 capacity festival boasts 5 stages in total: The Main Stage and Dance Stage hosting stellar indie and dance acts, with the JT Stage providing a vital showcase platform. A revamped Hospitality Stage is set to return, allowing Hospitality ticket holders to enjoy intimate performances by Main Stage acts as well as exclusive performances not available elsewhere at Jersey Live. Finally the Full Flow

Locale tent goes Al fresco in 2016 and continues to celebrate the island’s rich and diverse dance music scene, with Jersey’s top DJs lining up to play at the festival once again.

For the festival goers arriving early in the day, they can enjoy ‘first come first served’ extra benefits

such as free Lanyards and set time laminates, and free entry into a daily ‘Prize’ money cannot buy, whereby the winner gets an instant upgrade to Hospitality Tickets, win a cash prize courtesy of Gallery Magazine, and gets to choose to watch a Main Stage performing artist of their choice… HUGE!! People must be inside the gate by 2pm each day… We can’t wait to see you all again at what is set to be the most creative Jersey Live to date … with even more things to do than ever before … See you all on the 3rd & 4th September… JLHQ

Who is Tupper Loan Co? TLC is a friendly finance company based at New North Quay, St Helier. If you are looking for personal/ business loans, vehicle or marine finance then TLC is exactly what you need.

“Their 5 year plan was to expand their team to 5 people - after just two years in business they’re almost there!” Tupper Loans Co was set up by local individuals, David Tupper and Steve Moore, who between them have more than forty five years lending experience in Jersey. Where did TLC come from… David said he thought he had retired from lending a few years ago, however, he seemed to still enjoy advising and meeting up with long standing customers in coffee bars. In short he realised he was missing the industry and its customers. He didn’t actively seek out the business until Steve Moore approached him with a view to set up an office and provide a more professional and integrated service, and that is when Tupper Loans Co was born.

David Tupper Steve Moore 07797 717339 07797 724552 david@tupper.je steve@tupper.je

David and Steve launched in 2014 and have gone from strength to strength with their growing team. Last year they told us that their 5 year plan was to expand their team to 5 people - after just two years in business they’re almost there! Last year Les Ainscough joined the team and more recently they welcomed David Rive. Les Ainscough

Les has been in the Finance industry since 1989 and has built up a solid well-deserved reputation for honesty and integrity as well as constantly eating Tuna sandwiches. 07797 818642 les@tupper.je David Rive David is a good looking, locally born young man (his words) who in his spare time enjoys boxing, music and rowing. David is looking forward to helping individuals and businesses with any financial needs they may require whether it be a small loan or just for a bit of advice with any problems/queries that anyone might have. 07797 857120 david.rive@tupper.je The team at TLC don’t just provide a choice of beverages and a pleasant view of the marina though, they also arrange mortgages! With their breadth of knowledge, uniquely flexible solutions and their range of loan products, it’s safe to say they’re not like most other companies. Why not save time and start your application online now? At Tupper Loan Co they make things easy, it really is up to you how things are done - you can meet in person, have a telephone conversation or start

your application online. Take your pick and they’ll be in touch soon… Overall at Tupper Loan Co they offer a friendly yet professional service and we would recommend anybody considering a loan to pay the office down at the Marina a visit. Email… The Devil’s Work or a Godsend? Where did it all start? Well, it may come as a surprise but it wasn’t exactly planned! In the beginning people used to simply leave a note in a specific electronic file so that when the user logged on they would see it and respond if they needed to by leaving another note in the sender’s file. Basic stuff not dissimilar to leaving a ‘post-it’ note.

By Vernon Breese

The first mailing system is reputed to have been started as early as 1965 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology but it didn’t look anything like what we have today. Early email messaging could only communicate within a single system and it was only when computers were able to communicate with one another (network) that this changed and ‘addresses’ became necessary.

As far back as 1972 one Ray Tomlinson was credited with inventing email and making use of the @ symbol to separate the name of the user from the name of the computer so we get the familiar name@somewhere.com for example. Today, 100’s of millions of people are using email across the globe. Email has become a part of daily life for most people in the same way telephones and then mobiles have, and it’s almost free! So why the interest today in email from a business perspective? Isn’t email the norm now; old hat; surely there cannot be any more surprises? We know about the potential for fraud and annoying spam email and the apparent ease with which through email one’s identity can be stolen etc

“Because we equate email so closely to verbal exchanges we sometimes have a “rant” and whether you like it or not, when swear words are written down, they look a lot worse than they sound.”

etc but there is more and it is born of familiarity and complacency. We have become so familiar with email, it is part of daily communication and used as much as telephone calling, texting and in some cases ‘speaking’ and herein lies the problem. Most of the time and under normal circumstances, we like to speak ‘freely’ and so long as we take at least some care we can say what we like in the main and better still, if we make a mistake we can correct ourselves within seconds. The key here though is that unless your spoken word is recorded by a machine it is heard only by those within earshot and no other record of it exists. Not so with email. With email a permanent record of your written words is made and even if you change the email, the original still exists. The issue is that we have become so familiar with email - we don’t think anything of it and we treat it almost like speech. Here are three classic examples of how colloquial and verbal they have become: Inquiry:

“Please

could

you

arrange settlement of the attached overdue invoice” Response: “Beverley is away this week. Was it important?” Inquiry: “I am back tomorrow can we meet then?” Response: “Grand, 8.30” Inquiry: “Can you please agree the final terms of the attached contract. Catch you later for a pint?” Response: “Done. C U in Red Lion 5pm” You might ask what’s wrong with any of this? So since these are real examples, I’ll tell you: 1. In the first case above, the inquirer didn’t ask if Beverley was away. They were asking for a payment. 2. In the second case no meeting place has actually been suggested just the exclamation “Grand” meaning ‘delighted to meet’ and the time 8.30. So the person requesting the meeting turns up at the Grand Hotel 8.30 with no chance of a guest meeting them. 3. And in the third example. What does “Done” mean? Are they agreeing to the planned drink or the terms of the contract!

These are merely examples of how email is used poorly and I know you will have other examples of greater consequence where it has all gone seriously wrong in business and personally. My favourite examples are where the email sent is part of a long trail of email notes. Everything that has been communicated beforehand accidentally gets forwarded to an unintended recipient.

States of Jersey pays £1m by mistake Details about how Jersey government officials sent a £1 million payment twice by mistake are being withheld. Last year's States accounts mention a "duplicate" £1 million payment, which was recovered, but then triggered an internal audit review.

Here’s an example of a series of internal notes that ends up as a trail of emails finding its way to an unsuspecting customer: Bob: “Can you please tell me whether ABC has paid us yet?” Brian: “You’re haven a laugh Bob – that Percy bloke never pays us on time, he’s useless!” Bob: “Can you chase them mate?” Brian: “I’m not spending any time on that bunch of wasters. Send it legal” Kit: “I think Percy’s back now but he’s been in hospital – he fell off a ladder some while ago and banged his head badly” Brian: “Maybe he’ll remember to pay us this month then?” Kit: :) Bob: “Oh dear I hope he’s ok? Can I suggest you contact ABC to agree an arrangement – if he’s been off for some time that would explain things”… Brian: Dear Percy, Sorry to hear about your accident I hope you are fully recovered? As you will see from the below, we have an outstanding invoice and I wondered if we could discuss when it might be settled?” You may have examples much worse than this to share but I think this illustrates the point. It is a bit like cursing a caller on the phone after you ‘think’ you have put them on hold! The email trail forwarding is

That review found States money could be lost or paid out inaccurately. The government said the audit was exempt from the 2011 Freedom of Information (FOI) Law and refused to give any details about what happened.

“PercySchmercy. Well at least he knows where we are at on the outstanding fees! I’ve deleted all the emails. Don’t worry” an old problem we still haven’t cracked and there are several of these old issues – like replying to all when you meant to just reply to the sender or failing to attach something to an email and sending it with nothing. The next email scenario however is even more painful... Because we equate email so closely to verbal exchanges we sometimes have a “rant” and whether you like it or not, when swear words are written down, they look a lot worse than they sound. As a result, a real ‘rant’ by email can look and feel terrible. If you have done this – you know what I mean! I remember someone suggesting

many years ago that once you have written a ranting email, you should sleep on it and send an amended version in the morning. Wise words and following on from that, more recently it has been suggested that typing out an abusive email can be cathartic and helps alleviate the stress so, as long as you don’t accidentally send it later, that works too! But do be careful! Finally – the ambiguous. On the day you wrote a message, of course you knew what you meant. Two years later it is never so clear. When the email is important, remember to make certain it is utterly clear in every

There had been a potential risk of loss of States funds and inappropriate payment but the money was immediately recovered, according to the accounts.

respect. It will otherwise come to haunt you: After the above exchange, Percy decides to register a complaint and the internal email goes like this after which there is an inquiry uncovering the emails: Bob: “Brian, you £^@^! You sent that email with all the previous chat attached! We’ve had a serious complaint from Percy at ABC!” Brian: “PercySchmercy. Well at least he knows where we are at on the outstanding fees! I’ve just deleted all the emails. Don’t worry about it” Now it goes without saying that the fictitious Brian doesn’t seem to know that deleting the emails won’t help but even if he could achieve their entire deletion the rest of the exchange is properly damning in so many ways. Would it have been different if this had all happened verbally across the desk? If you write an email and you are not completely comfortable with its content, be really careful. Give yourself time to consider what you have written. The other rule I use is to assume that every single person in the world will get to see this email. So if you are happy with that – then it is either safe to send or it is going to have the effect you wanted, or both.

Park your money with UK Airport Investments David Morley, founder of Morley UK Airport Investments discusses the merits of Compound Interest

“The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest” - Albert Einstein This month I would like to ask you to consider for a moment the power of something quite extraordinary Compound interest. Compound interest in its simplest form is where interest received or earned from an investment is reinvested back and allowed to accumulate over a given period of time. Long term investment returns therefore depends upon 2 major factors, firstly losses need to be avoided at all costs. The investor should therefore avoid risky and volatile investments and seek to invest in assets that can demonstrate long-term positive performance in all market conditions without ANY losses. Secondly the returns have to be reinvested. Compounding investment returns is therefore paramount to long term performance - not easy to find I

The Greatest Invention If Columbus had placed one single dollar out at 6% interest compounded annually with instructions to pay the proceeds to you today, you would have over Ten Billion Dollars coming to you. We can do it with what has been called the world’s greatest invention: “Compound Interest.”

agree however, there are a few investments out there that will tick that box. Historically this could be achieved from Bank deposit interest but unfortunately this is no longer possible as Interest rates in the UK have been held at 0.5% for the last 7 years and could well remain at this rate for the foreseeable future. One other investment that warrants consideration is Car Parks and in particular Airport Car Parks. Take the car parks at Glasgow International Airport for example they can demonstrate long term performance with no losses over a 20 year period. Spaces are available at £20,000 and each space is then managed on your behalf with the income received being paid back to you at a guaranteed rate of 10% p.a. for years 1 & 2. Year 3 and beyond then move to a variable rate which is now in excess of 10% and forecasts are predicted to be 12% by year 5 and increased each year. Each investment is registered with the appropriate Land Registry with all spaces coming with a 175year lease. This is a Commercial property transaction that is both straight forward and unique where the investor purchases a single or multiple car parking spaces.

4,120 have already been sold, leaving just 380 spaces available. The Car Parks were all purchased outright without borrowing, so totally unencumbered and debt free. All transactions are carried out and overseen by UK regulated solicitors and Park First will cover all legal costs in this respect. When the car parks at Glasgow were purchased two and a half years ago they were achieving an average weekly rate of £45 per week per space, in the last 2 years the weekly rates have been increased to £55 per week which represents a 22% increase in income. As a comparison weekly rates at Edinburgh can be as high as £95 per week therefore demonstrating further scope for future price increases. Ryanair has recently announced an additional 1,000,000 seat capacity from this airport. The average occupancy level of all the spaces has also increased from 71% to 92% over the same period which represents a 30% increase in occupancy and hence additional income. Two independent Royal Institute Chartered Surveyors valuation reports have recently valued the spaces at £30,000 each. Their calculation has predominantly been based upon the uplift in the occupancy rate coupled with the increased weekly price charged. The 10% return is paid to the investor net of all management/ service charges and ground rent.

These Car Parks / Spaces are fully managed and let on a daily or weekly basis. Currently spaces are available at Luton and Glasgow - Gatwick is now fully sold out. Others will soon follow at Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham.

Year 3 and onwards are paid on variably rates quarterly in advance and Investors now entering their 3rd year are all receiving between 10% and 10.4% p.a., it is estimated that returns by year 5 will be circa 12% p.a. All spaces are let on a strict rotational basis.

Glasgow Airport is a most interesting proposition as it has the further benefit of not having a rail link to the airport, therefore travellers have no choice other than to drive to the airport. Of the 4,500 spaces originally available

For investors looking to sell these spaces Park First will at any time market the space on the investors behalf and charge a 5% commission of sale proceeds or alternatively they will buy back the space after 5 years at the original

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it... he who doesn't... pays it” - Albert Einstein purchase price i.e. £20,000

every time there is a price increase.

VAT thresholds in the UK are currently £83,000 therefore National Car Parks ‘NCP’ and other similar car park companies are compelled to charge their customers VAT at 20% provided that individual investors at Park First does not exceed £83,000 p.a. income and the spaces are let out free of VAT. They are therefore effectively 20% cheaper than their competition.

If the parking price moves up each year to reflect a 0.50% p.a. enhancement on returns the results are mind-blowing. The original investment would have doubled in 6.5 years and the end value would be a staggering £312,000 from an original £20,000 investment which is over 15 times the original investment.

Let us now turn back to how compounding such an investment would work. £20,000 compounding at a rate of 10% p.a. over 20 years would double your money in 7.5 years. By year 20 the original investment would be worth a staggering £134,550 nearly 7 times the amount invested. This actually is a total understatement of the likely return. The reason is over time the management company will put the price of daily /weekly parking up, the investor is further benefiting

For further details, questions, brochures etc. please contact David Morley on 07797 725 466 or david@airport-carparks.com “Direct commercial property investments do not constitute ‘Investments’ for the purposes of the Financial Services (Jersey) Law 1998. Accordingly, Park First is not regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission or the Financial Conduct Authority. Investments in commercial property including car parking spaces is therefore not covered by the UK Financial Ombudsman Service or the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme.”

The Busy Queen Bee on customer service BUZZ 5 – ACT No longer can one business rest on his laurels, wake up it’s time for action, if you don’t some-one else will. Do you know that bees avoid decision-making pitfalls by considering several options, but they make fast and effective decisions in order to react to opportunities? Businesses need to evaluate, respond and act taking in new information put it into good use, and modify or eliminate ineffective ones. Procrastination is the enemy of progress. Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a lat-er time, sometimes to the last minute before a deadline. According to the first ever indepth report examining why and how we procrastinate, Britons spend nearly four hours every day delaying tasks they know they should be doing. Not only does this cost businesses £76bn a year in lost revenue, it also affects peace of mind at home. The aftermath of the recession still lingers, yet nearly a quar-ter of us (twenty four per cent) delay sorting out our personal finances, despite the fact that seventeen per cent of us believe we’d be in a much better financial position if we did.

But procrastination isn’t just a money thief – it steals time too. The study, published by the lending company RateSetter and based on a YouGov survey of 2,000 adults, revealed that we spend, on average, two hundred and eighteen minutes procrastinating every day, which amounts to fifty five days of lost time each year. Employees waste forty three minutes daily just by doing nonwork related things, like making tea or gossiping with colleagues, which equates to £76 billion lost to British busi-nesses each year. As I mentioned earlier, procrastination is almost always based on some kind of fear. Our minds make all our future tasks big and scary. So we procrastinate. We try to avoid the pain that we know is surely going to come. The problem is that to stay in this place of “comfort” we sacrifice something much more valuable: time. Twenty per cent of people worldwide identify themselves as chronic procrastinators. And despite what the super-organised among us may believe, their behaviour is not caused by a lack of time management or planning. So to avoid procrastinating you must set new habits, and the most

important part of any new habit is getting started — not just the first time, but each time. It’s not about performance, it’s about consistently taking action. In many ways, getting started is more important than succeed-ing. Create an action plan, ‘Bee’ smart and define accountability; each “bee” has a spe-cific task and is responsible for carrying it out.

“Create an action plan, ‘Bee’ smart and define accountability; each “bee” has a specific task and is responsible for carrying it out. However, in reality this just isn’t as simple.”

However, in reality this just isn’t as simple; setting and communicating goals isn’t enough. To truly achieve alignment and ensure success, you need to make everyone accountable. So build regular reporting and status updates into your customer service goal management and performance management process. Everyone, up and down the report-ing chain, including the executives or leaders who are responsible for organisational goals, should regularly report on their progress in achieving goals and the status of their goals. Without this regular communication, it’s easy for managers and employ-ees to set goals, document them on a form, then file them away and forget them until the next performance

review/goal setting period. Action planning is working out what exactly you need to do to get where you want to be. Whether those are personal goals or organisational goals it doesn’t matter, as the skills required are the same, so what are you waiting for? Go on, get started… “So what do we do? Anything. Something. So long as we don’t just sit there. If we screw it up, start over. Try something else. If we wait until we’ve satisfi ed all the uncertainties, it may be too late.” - Lee Iacocca. “My passion is to help businesses thrive by delivering exceptional customer service by creating customer loyalty, improving employee engagement resulting on having a successful business.

Digital Jersey is well placed to respond to the unique nature of the emerging digital industries, and in doing so to better target staff where the potential value added is greatest. Digital

will

be

able

to provide businesses with confidence that up to 30 staffing permissions from the Population Office over the next six months will be available as part of this pilot.

Mr Le Boutillier said: “Having represented the Liberation Group since 2010, we have built up an excellent working relationship with them and it was a great opportunity for us to work on this transaction.”

Double Taxation Agreement with Cyprus Jersey has signed a comprehensive Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with the Republic of Cyprus. This is the Island’s twelfth DTA to the international standard.

Local businesses applying to the pilot scheme will be required to submit application to Digital Jersey evidencing how the roles selected will contribute towards the growth and development of the local digital industry. Particular consideration will be given to industry sectors identified in the Digital Jersey 2016 business plan including fintech, Digital Health, Internet of Things and Jersey testbed schemes. Digital Jersey will provide the applications to the Population Office, who will deliver the licences that businesses need.

Collas Crill’s property and commercial departments have advised the Liberation Group, on its £118m sale to Caledonia Investments plc. The Liberation Group owns the largest group of pubs and eateries in the Channel Islands with a total of 68 premises. The Liberation Group also owns the Liberation Brewery, Victor Hugo Wines and Bucktrout & Company Ltd.

Digital Jersey and the Population Office Sign MoU to Digital Sector Digital Jersey and the Population Office have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a six-month pilot scheme to provide staffing permissions, both registered and licensed, to local businesses looking to fill technology and digital commercial roles.

Collas Crill advise Liberation Group on its sale

Senator Bailhache said “The signing of the DTA continues Jersey’s firm and longstanding commitment to the international standards of transparency & information exchange.

The MoU will support companies with strong potential to achieve productivity above the economy average or which offer significant wider benefits to Jersey. Licensed permissions will be granted to higher skilled/ higher economic value staff,

and registered permissions will be allocated where necessary to help ensure the business achieves a GVA above the economic average. The scheme will be reviewed at the end of the six-month period.

“Jersey also pursues a good neighbour policy in relation to the EU and are delighted that with the signing of the DTA we will be further strengthening our political and business relationship with an EU Member State. The signing is particularly welcome as we have a great deal in common as international finance centres.”
