Powerboat Racing Will Return This Summer Offshore powerboat racing will return to Jersey this summer – over two decades since the last series of races with the island playing host to a Festival at the height of the season in 2016. The glamour of the fast craft racing will return to St Aubin’s Bay in August when racers from across Europe are expected to ride the waves in front of an enthusiastic audience. The Jersey Powerboat Club has announced that the Island will host an Offshore Circuit Race, a category of racing officiated by the RYA Britain’s national authority for watersports. The racing is being held on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August and the JPC said that the festival will provide as much excitement onshore as it will on the water with a host of events planned throughout the weekend. The JPC is expecting a strong local contingent to compete alongside leading UK competitors and is extending invitations to powerboat races across the European continent. The festival is likely to have wider benefits to the local economy with a large number of race teams, crews, friends, officials and

enthusiasts travelling to Jersey. Direct revenue will be brought to the Island through hotels, restaurants, shops, travel arrangements while various media channels will showcase the island to a global audience from a tourism perspective. Powerboat racing in the Channel

Islands was at its height 30 years ago when Guernsey was a venue for a leg of the World Championships. In the mid90s Jersey was playing host to the predecessor of the current offshore series. Jersey Powerboat Club chairman, Roy Smith, raced in both of those series and went on from strength-

to-strength. He became a national champion and only hung up his helmet after clinching the 2-litre world championship title in Guernsey in 2008. Roy said: ‘I am really excited to have powerboating back in Jersey waters once again. After being the club’s chairman for a number of years it’s fantastic to see young

people coming through and giving the club the fresh start that it needs.’ Anyone interested in volunteering or offering sponsorship support should visit the website jerseypowerboatclub. co.uk or email jpcteam@ jerseypowerboatclub.co.uk

Jersey vote against introducing UK living wage model Proposals for a "National Living Wage" to be introduced in Jersey in line with the UK have been rejected, in favour of a smaller rise in the minimum wage. The States of Jersey voted against fixing the minimum wage at £7.20 from April by 38 to 10 votes. However, members agreed to investigate the impact of the proposed changes in the island. From April workers in the UK aged 25 years old and above will be guaranteed a National Living Wage of £7.20, which will replace

the minimum wage of £6.70. In Jersey however, the minimum wage is due to rise to £6.97, a 19p increase recommended by the government's consultative body, the Employment Forum. Senator Gorst said: “We are putting policies in place to ensure that our economy continues to grow, and I welcome the decision of the Assembly to uphold the increase in the minimum wage recommended by the Employment Forum, which was above inflation and average earnings.”

Graham Le Lay, President of the Jersey Farmers Union, said more farmers "would go out of business" if a living wage was introduced, adding that wages was one of the "biggest costs" for farmers. However, Deputy Sam Mezec, who brought the proposals, said the vote against the rise meant people on the minimum wage would find it "more difficult to buy the things they need to live" as a result of inflation. He said it was "the taxpayer who foots the bill" because a lower minimum wage would mean higher payments in income support.

School get funding for disadvantaged pupils in Jersey More than £800,000 has been made available in an attempt to help disadvantaged pupils achieve more in school in 2016.

The scheme will run in a few schools in 2016 before being rolled out across the island in 2017. Initially £837,000 will be shared between schools in 2016, with an increase to £1.2m from 2017 onwards.

Children are able to receive funding if they: • Live in a household that receives income support • Live in a household that could receive income support but have not lived in Jersey for over 5 years • Are Looked After Children (who are under the care of Social Services) • Funding is available to pupils whether they have lived in Jersey all their life or have only just arrived.

The money will be used to give children extra help with English, Maths, reading and allowing schools to run after school clubs

Education minister Deputy Rod Bryans said the money should help narrow the gap between state and fee-paying schools.

Letters explaining the new "Jersey Premium" scheme have been sent to parents on income support.

Campaign exposes ‘legal’ drug dangers A new high profile campaign has been launched raising awareness about so called ‘legal highs’. The campaign also provides factual information about the effects the substances can have. Highs.exposed is being run by Prison! Me! No Way!!!, the States of Jersey Police, HMP La Moye and Ambulance and Customs and Immigration Services. The campaign’s key message is: ‘Just because something says it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s legal OR safe’. People who manufacture and sell ‘so called’ legal highs, market these drugs as being legal, which means that young people believe them to be safe. A new website has been launched containing factual and helpful information on NPS (New Psychoactive Substances) or ‘so called’ legal highs. The website lets young people and parents know where they can get support and advice in Jersey.

The campaign will also feature advertising on television and Jersey buses, social media posts and a parent / carer roadshow. Every secondary school on the island has been included in the parent / carer roadshow and the dates are available on both the States of Jersey Police website and the highs.exposed site. The roadshows will reinforce the campaign’s messages and create a forum for people who are worried about someone, either a friend or family member using these substances, or just want to know more about their effects. Prison! Me! No Way!!! have also designed three new lessons, with locally filmed material, and will deliver lessons to every student across the island in Year 8, Year 10 and Year 12. Each year groups’ lesson is tailored to ensure it is age appropriate and relevant as well as engaging and all lessons will link into PSHE.

The key messages of the highs. exposed campaign are: • Just because something says that it’s legal, doesn’t mean that it is legal or that it’s safe • Many of these substances have not been researched, no one knows what is in them. Don’t be a guinea pig • Why risk it? Don’t play Russian Roulette •NPS (New Psychoactive Substances) or so called ‘legal highs’ are substances designed to act like existing illegal drugs. They are often so new, that no research has been done to find out their dangers, and have been linked to many hospital admissions and even deaths. Prison! Me! No Way!!! Jersey has been undertaking work with students in school on the subject in order to provide young people with factual information on the subject since last year. During 2016 a lot of their focus will be on continuing with that work in the classroom.

In Brief £516,000 worth of cannabis seized Customs and Immigration officers have seized approximately 31 kilos of cannabis with an estimated street value of £516,000. The seizure was made in January after officers examined a car disembarking the Condor Ferry arriving in Jersey from Poole. Richard Clark, 51, from Dorset, appeared in court charged with illegally importing the drug. He was remanded in custody and will appear in court this month.

Two injured seals were returned to the wild Two seal pups found injured on Jersey's coastline have been successfully returned to the wild. One of the pups was found at St Ouen's Bay on Christmas Eve with bite wounds to its back. It was sent to the specialist RSPCA West Hatch centre in Somerset to recover and released overnight. An underweight and wounded female pup was found at Portelet Bay, but after on-island care was released back into the wild.

In-cell phones for inmates at La Moye

The Marine Resources Panel has agreed a package of legislative measures to protect Jersey’s bass stocks.

Inmates at La Moye Prison in Jersey will soon have telephones in their cells.

These measures consist of: •Increase in minimum size to 42cm •Maximum three fish per day per person for recreational fishermen •Maximum of 50 hooks set on beach •Maximum limit of 100 metres of net set on the beach •Increase to 110mm minimum mesh size for nets set on the beach

It is to compensate for their recreation time being reduced as a result of budget cuts.

In addition, there will be a ban on winter pelagic trawling.

Peter Fowler is set to defend the title he won last year, finishing one stroke clear of Anders Forsbrand before going on to triumph the following week in the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship.

Prisoners are being locked up an hour earlier because of a reduction in staff levels. Inmates will be able to call up to 20 approved numbers and all calls will be recorded as with communal calls. The phones will still not receive calls.

Prison governor Bill Millar said: "We are taking away recreation time which is the time they access communal phones to contact family and friends. "We are going over to a different kind of service. The communal phones are in a state of collapse anyway so we plan to replace them with in-cell phones." Anthony Olsen, chairman of the prison board of visitors, said in a report that locking up prisoners for longer was a "retrograde step" and he hoped budget cuts did not affect training and education.

Jersey States publish secret transcripts A politician said he used a police report as a basis to "suspend" a former police chief, despite it not being meant for disciplinary procedures.

The inquiry will now be able to use the transcripts to question witnesses about whether politicians interfered in the abuse investigation.

Mr Power was in charge when a police investigation into historic child abuse began. He was suspended over his handling of that investigation, but was never disciplined.

One transcript shows that Deputy Lewis said he used a preliminary report by the Metropolitan Police into the Jersey abuse investigation as a basis to "pursue a disciplinary investigation" and "suspend" Mr Power.

Witnesses had previously attempted to submit leaked evidence of the secret transcripts to the Jersey Care Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of child abuse in Jersey.

Frank Walker, who was Chief Minister in 2008, had also told the care inquiry Mr Power's suspension did not rely on the Metropolitan Police report.

The Burrow is now £60,000 closer to becoming a reality 2015 saw the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation raise £60,000 for their latest project. The aim of The Burrow is to purchase a property next to Southampton Hospital that families across the Bailiwick can use if their newborn baby or child requires critical offisland treatment. A fantastic number of donations and fundraising efforts by individuals and local businesses, along with the success of the 2015 Christmas Markets, have brought the charity closer to reaching the £150,000 needed to purchase a property of their very own. The Guernsey Market Place supported the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation during all of December’s Thursday and Saturday Markets. Fundraising also took place at the Christmas Carol Service and Santa’s Grotto. The grotto, created by NSP Foundations and organised by Donna Edwards and Tessa Le Gallez, proved extremely popular. An impressive total of £3,000

was raised throughout the festive period. Jo Priaulx, co-founder of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation says: ‘During such a stressful time it makes a massive difference to have a comfortable place to stay that is close to your child while they undergo treatment.’ ‘We are so fortunate to have a flat that we can offer to local families for days, weeks or months but, because it is in constant use, there is a real need for The Burrow,’ explains Mrs Priaulx. ‘Having an additional property would help tremendously as we would be able to provide accommodation to more than one family at a time.’ Dawn and John Sealey experienced the support offered by the charity at first-hand when their son Jack was born 12 weeks early and required vital treatment at Southampton Hospital. The couple were able to stay in the flat for four weeks until Jack was well enough to come home.

‘It was reassuring to know that when we weren’t on the ward, we could be by Jack’s side in minutes.’ says Mrs Sealey. ‘We were also provided with a mobile phone for a UK SIM so that we wouldn’t come home to a huge bill. The PPBF looked after us by thinking of all the little things both practically and emotionally. We have stayed in touch with the charity ever since and, through the work that they do, I got to meet a number of other families who have been in a similar situation to us.’ ‘We aim to purchase The Burrow by 2017 and with the wonderful response it has received so far, we hope this will be achievable,’ adds Mrs Priaulx. ‘Thank you to all of our supporters and to the team at Investec Private Banking for giving this project a voice in 2015. There is still a long way to go but we are excited to see what 2016 brings.’ You can find out more by visiting: www.ppbf.org.gg/the-burrow.

Personalised Paper for the Perfect Pair Ananya Cards set the stage for weddings of 2016 with their personalised stationery As we begin 2016, it is clear that brides are becoming a lot more creative when putting together a ceremony that is unique to them. In fact, when it comes to wedding ceremonies, a study by leading hotel bookers LateRooms.com has has found that just 18% of British weddings will involve a traditional church service this year. Ananya Cards, an award winning,

bespoke luxury stationery company operating across Jersey and London, is offering a service that will set the stage for a couple's big day in 2016, personalised to their own style and individuality. Whether it starts with a 'save the date' card or the wedding invitation as the first glimpse of their special day, it will set the scene for the rest of the wedding, from personalised monograms, to seating plans, table numbers,

wishing trees, guest books and thank you cards. When creating bespoke wedding stationery, Ananya Cards believes it is vital to get an insight into the couple and their personalities. In addition to in depth consultations with the couple, they also talk to the maid of honour, best man, friends and family to cover every perspective. From their favourite book, best loved teas or travel

destinations, it’s these details and distinctions that convey the couple's personality and style through the stationery and help shape their wedding day. Monograms are a great place to start and are a wonderful way to personalise a wedding invitation and create that extra unique touch. The couple’s initials can be stylised and combined with illustrations and motifs to create an image that symbolises them and works in harmony with the tone of the wedding. This is particularly meaningful and relevant in multicultural weddings to highlight the couple's different heritages. Ananya Cards’ ‘Tartan Turban’ invitations were designed for an Indian Scottish wedding. They also designed colourful tags for a wish tree to represent the vibrancy of the Indian culture. The tags were tied to the wish tree with tartan ribbons to represent the Scottish culture. Guests wrote their wishes and words of advice on the colourful tags and tied them on the wish tree as a beautiful memento to the couple. It’s all about thinking outside the box and looking at every detail. Instead of table numbers, Ananya Cards suggests naming each table with something that is relevant to the couple. This could be anything from the names or coordinates of destinations that

have a special significance, to meaningful dates or pet names that the couple use. A wedding booklet with photographs of the couple at specific stages in their lives would also be a nice touch. Wedding stationery should incorporate elements that are meaningful to the couple; these can then influence the font, colours, textures and embellishments throughout the wedding stationery and create a unique and unforgettable statement about the couple on their special day. For Ananya Cards, stationery is a great indicator that weddings are becoming more creative and adventurous. Vaishali Shah, Founder, Ananya Cards, says: ‘Our wedding stationery has never been more diverse and inspirational. Most brides have a Pinterest board these days and are gathering images to help inspire their wedding day and push the limits of a traditional wedding. We have seen more grooms getting involved in selecting the design theme for their weddings, too, and this is significant; it’s not just about the bride, it’s about getting to the heart of the couple and allowing their unique relationship to shine through. At Ananya Cards, we encourage creativity and believe that our personal service allows weddings to flourish.’

Health & Fitness

Success Story Sue Harvey has lost an incredible 5 stone! This is her story…

“You have to be of the right mind set to lose weight, if you are not, you won't stick to it” My exercise regime consists of the Sunday morning walk, which Ben will tell you, I haven't missed one except for just after my daughter’s wedding, (I was NOT the largest lady in the photos and the amount of compliments I had embarrassed me! I did feel great when my exhusband said "bloody hell, look at you" though! I also had to have 6" taken off my dress I had bought 6 months earlier.)

In June 2014, my daughter Kim told me that her boyfriend had asked her to marry him. In October, she announced the wedding date was to be the 27th June 2015 which got me to thinking that I did not want to be the fat mother of the bride and the largest person in all the photos. I was so upset as I didn't know how I was going to achieve this. I knew where I was going wrong but I needed something or someone to help me achieve some weight loss.

I also have personal training sessions with Ben - he has upped the ante recently to lifting weights etc. I am still knackered but the fact that I can do the exercises he gives me is great. I could never have done it 18 months ago and my recovery time is a lot shorter than it used to be which proves I am a lot fitter than I used to be. I also go to my Wednesday class with the weigh in, which I must admit, I do need to keep me on track!

A week later, I saw an advertisement for Ben's slim club and thought it was fate. Deciding I needed to lose weight and, lo and behold, the man of my dreams (or nightmares as I was later to find out, but that’s another story!) As I said, this was the beginning of November 2014 and I weighed 19 stone 3lb (269lbs). I went to the first class (legs, bums & tums, I think?!) with trepidation in my heart and a very baggy t-shirt! By the end of it, I was knackered! On my first Sunday morning walk, I met 2 lovely ladies (Cathy and Thelma) who walked with me all the way and would not let me stop. By the end of THAT, I could not walk. I used to love bread & cheese - I would have 2 pieces of toast with marg, cheese and ham every day for breakfast, the same when I got home from work as well as my lunch that I had taken with me or bought at the shop - which could of consisted of anything, but to be fair,

I didn't think it was so bad but I did always have Mayonnaise! I would drink coffee by the gallon, always with 2/3 sugars, but as I didn’t drink fizzy drinks or eat many crisps I thought I was OK. I would then go home and have my "snack" of toast and ham with a coffee plus sugar. As I still had a couple of hours before my tea, I would get on the sofa for an hour and have my siesta. My main evening meal would consist of chips 3 or 4 times a

week with anything from turkey escalope’s and beans to pie and all the trimmings. I also ate a lot of pasta which I thought was ok but with shop bought sauces. I always added them liberally never thinking they were meant for four people even though I was only cooking for two! There is also a hell of lot of sugar and other bad things in these sauces. Now, 14 months later, I am now nearly 5 stone lighter (which sounds better if I say 70lb!) and just over 14 stone.

Breakfast now consists of Rice Krispies with Alpro natural yoghurt and fruit, or rice cakes with cottage cheese, for lunch I take cous cous with peppers, sweetcorn, lime juice and seasoning and a couple pieces of fruit. For my main meal, I do tend to have the same things but on a much smaller scale, I actually got myself a smaller plate which has worked well as when I had a "normal" size dinner plate I would fill it up to the brim, now, with the smaller plate, I don't do that and even if I did, the portion size is half of what used to be on my plate!

My long term plan is to get to around the 14 stone mark, (you may think this is still quite high, but with my boobs, I would be top heavy if I went any further) and I will see how I feel then as to whether or not I carry on and lose some more weight. That’s about it really, but the only thing I can say is that you have to be of the right mind set to lose weight, if you are not, then you won't stick to it and the only person who will be disappointed is you. It is hard, I won't lie to you, but it does pay off and boy do you feel GREAT!

2 Can carrots really help you see in the dark?! The idea that carrots help you see in the dark is due to a myth which began in World War II. To prevent the Germans finding out that Britain were using radar, they issued press releases stating that British pilots were eating lots of carrots to give them exceptional night vision. This fooled the British public, as well as German High Command and so began the old wives tale!

1 Not only does a bowl of porridge instantly warm you up, it also boasts a heap of health benefits! Whole grains and whole-grain derivatives have a high amount of dietary fiber, which fills you up, preventing overeating, and with a high amount of complex carbs, which get digested at a slow pace, you will receive lasting energy. Porridge also has a generous amount of iron which join forces with red blood cells to carry oxygen to the muscles and all other areas of the body. There are plenty of other great benefits too, so whether you like yours plain, topped with fruit or with a dollop of honey, tuck in and enjoy!

4

A medium-size carrot has 25 calories, 6 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of fiber. The veggie is an excellent source of vitamin A, providing more than 200% of your daily requirement in just one carrot! Vitamin A is required to synthesise rhodopsin, which is the pigment in your eyes that operates in low-light conditions. If you have a vitamin A deficiency, carrots would correct this, improving night vision, but only to the point of an ordinary person.

PRE-PARTY / 6PM–10PM / SIROCCO Ross Hunter & Friends RESIDENTS AFTER-PARTY FOR OVERNIGHT GUESTS ONLY / 2AM – 6AM / LITTLE DRIFT Steve Ferbrache / Craig Alder / Simon Gasston Roger Sanchez Biography 2015 proved to be one of Roger Sanchez’s most creative and prolific years to date, with the continued success of his S-Man moniker, and the first releases under his own name for some time. Following the return of his S-Man alter-ego, the huge “Remember Me” (feat Stealth) as Roger Sanchez, relaunched his Stealth Recordings label, and grew from Pete Tongs essential new tune into a global radio and club hit, picking up deals with Ministry Of Sound - Australia, Ego - Italy, We Play - Germany, Blanco Y Negro –Spain and beyond. Current remixes for Apres’s Chicago and Mystery Skulls feat Brandy & Nile Rodgers, have added to a lengthy, and illustrious mix discography featuring legends like Madonna and George Clinton.

His DJ shows have also gone into overdrive across all five continents, demonstrating a growing hunger for his characteristic take on house music. In the club he mixes up the likes of new stars Dusky and Huxley with the next level, underground gems he sources from labels and producers across the world, crafted with the kind of experience that only comes from two decades of DJing. The same fervent, crate-digging attitude he’s always been known for can also be found on his radio show, where he champions new talent and obscure tracks he picks up on his travels, having first road tested them in the booth. His label, UNDR THE RADR, launched in 2014 with his own Dangerous Thoughts track (under his S-Man guise), also saw the collaboration Drop The Needle with Man Without A Clue & Kevin Knapp. The collaborations with Huxley (The Calling) and Tough Love (In The Name Of Love) followed suit, continuing the theme of exploring new ground that was shown with his Amour single for Riva Starrs Snatch label. From a humble beginning in NYC to multi-year residencies in Ibiza; from digging in dusty crates to headlining festival main-stages around the world, Roger is truly a self-made man and dance music star.

The crafting of Roger Sanchez, the DJ, started in the late 80s in Corona, Queens, where as a young man he was enticed by the

early roots of hip-hop sprouting all over New York. Attending parties by the Bronx River and other jams as a break-dancer and graffiti artist, he was introduced to DJing through friends, trying his hand in an organic environment where his creativity behind the decks flourished from a few singles into an ambitious catalogue of over two thousand original productions and remixes. These tracks have not always been under his own name, though. Roger has released music under a slew of monikers, including S-Man, Roger S., The Nu-Solution, Underground Solution, DV8, Ego Trip, El Mariachi, The Funk Junkeez, Tribal Infusion, Twilight, and Transatlantic Soul amongst others. Each new name has allowed him to push his music in unique yet blended directions, allowing him to carve parallel and weaving paths through the tastes of the times while enjoying opportunities to break out of the known! Anyone whos DJ’d knows that you have to put in work, both to sharpen your skills and to find those unique cuts that no one else has. Ever evolving on his hustle, always pushing himself, and others, to do better, the S-Man sums it up perfectly when he states: “I’m always moving forward, but never losing sight of where I’ve been.” For table enquiries please contact: craig.alder@theoyalyacht.com

POST WAR DESIGN Are you sitting on a small fortune? By Stephen Cohu Literally, you may be sitting on a small fortune! Tens of thousands of pounds worth of post-war furniture and design is sent to the tip every year by people who assume it has no value. Don’t make that mistake! Many Jersey residents, who may have acquired these items as utilitarian at the time of manufacture, or inherited them from their parents or grandparents, more often than not will despatch them to the great furniture heaven in the sky, via the incinerator chimney! Designs are simple and clean, the modern look, hence the term modernist used to describe the whole design movement following the end of the Second World War. In 1951 the Festival of Britain Exhibition was held to mark the centenary of the original Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace of 1851. The designs shown were a move away from the grandeur of the prewar period to focus on simplicity and function. Scandinavian Supremacy Scandinavian design emerged in the 1950s in Norway, Sweden but especially in Denmark and Finland. The idea that beautiful and functional everyday objects should be affordable not only to the wealthy was a core theme in the development of modernism and functionalism. The increased availability of new low-cost materials and methods for mass production opened quality furniture up to the masses. Scandinavian design often makes use of formpressed wood, plastics, anodized or enamelled aluminium or pressed steel and most often crafted in teak or rosewood. Much of it ends up in charity shops where it is recognised and readily snapped up by the knowledgeable buyer, often for just a few pounds. Worse still, it is totally overlooked as being worthless, ending up as

landfill, lining the ash pits at La Collette! Denmark The Danish look became classic middle class good taste in the late 50s, usurping more traditional looking furniture Denmark was the centre of furniture production and design where many of the best known designs of today originated. Over the years they have been much copied, usually with just a slight change to avoid copyright law. The egg chair by Arne Jacobsen is a good example. Originals can be worth several thousand pounds but a Chinese copy could be bought for £50. Functional pieces such as draw-leaf tables, dining chairs, sideboards and side-cabinets and trolleys were produced in matching suites or as individual items. I recently went on a house call, the people were selling up and downsizing. The lady was dismayed to learn that her treasured antiques had very little value but was incredulous that the most desirable items in the house were a Danish teak suite of furniture she thought would have to go to the tip! The United Kingdom G-Plan G-Plan furniture was a pioneering range of furniture produced by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe. In 1943 furniture was part of rationing in the United Kingdom and the Board of Trade set up the Utility scheme which limited costs and the types of furniture on sale. A small number of simple designs were available in oak or mahogany. This scheme ended in December 1952 and combined with the Festival of Britain led to a demand for more modern furniture.

In 1953, Donald Gomme, the designer at E Gomme, decided to produce a range of modern furniture for the entire house which could be bought piece by piece according to budgets, hence the “Plan”. In the early 1960s in response to competition from Danish furniture the company introduced a Danish Modern range, which is very popular today. Much G-Plan furniture has survived and the most stylish pieces are keenly collected.

and Albert Museum. In 1947, the first production-line Windsor chair, and other pieces from the range of Windsor furniture, went on sale. Ercol's mass-produced furniture found a ready market in post-war Britain, which demanded smaller pieces with simpler lines than their chunky pre-war counterparts. Ercol furniture was exhibited at the 1951 Festival of Britain, as it represented the latest style and fashion in furniture design and manufacture. Early Ercol is highly collectable.

Ercol Ercol is another iconic brand from the same period, established by Lucian Ercolani. In 1946, Ercol exhibited its bentwood furniture at the Britain Can Make It Exhibition, held at the Victoria

Heritage designed the famous Hamilton sideboard for Archie Shine based on classic Danish lines and won a Design Centre Award for this sideboard in 1958. The USA and the rest of the World Everyone has heard of Charles and Ray Eames and Knoll Associates. Originals are worth serious money. Le Corbusier is another celebrated name and every European country produced their own great designers and designs in the Modernist period. Conclusion Don’t dispose of your post war possessions for a pittance (or worse!) they may be worth considerably more than you think. Seven advantages of fitted wardrobes When you build your new home, are you wondering whether you should include a fitted wardrobe in your plans for the bedrooms? There are many good reasons to do so. Below are seven different advantages to consider when you make the decision about whether to add a fitted wardrobe — also known as a “built-in wardrobe” or “bespoke wardrobe” — to your new home plans. 1. Get a Wardrobe Precisely to Your Needs

Tailored

your freestanding wardrobe into the bedroom, and you realized that the size and shape were all wrong? Maybe the wardrobe was too large, and it dominated the room and overwhelmed the other furnishings. Or maybe the wardrobe was too small, and looked puny and miserable amidst the other components in the room. Ever had a freestanding wardrobe that was in the way, and looked awkward no matter where you put it?

You can design a fitted wardrobe with all the features you want, and all the details you would use. You can omit any features that would not be useful to you.

Have you ever bought a freestanding wardrobe, only to discover that it wouldn’t fit through the door in the room where you wanted to place it?

Does it drive you mad that freestanding wardrobes don’t include enough space for you to tidy up your shoes and accessories in the allotted compartments? You can solve this problem easily with a fitted wardrobe; in fact, when you build a fitted wardrobe, you can even specify the inclusion of a shoe rack with exactly the number of pairs of shoes you own.

Have you ever been frustrated by wasted space in your room, because the wardrobe was a little too small, and it left unusable areas between itself and one or more walls?

Add additional cupboards, drawers, shelves, compartments, racks, and hangers as needed to create your own flexible, unique space. And, all of these features can be neatly enclosed behind stylish, customtailored wardrobe doors. Want a built-in vanity table where you or your significant other could sit and accessorize that day’s ensemble, or a full-length mirror for making sure your shoes match your suit? No problem; these details are easy to arrange. Your fitted wardrobe will occupy exactly the amount of space you want to designate for it — even if your building lot is small and narrow, or you only have a small, odd-shaped space to devote to the wardrobe. 2. Intelligent, Efficient Use of Space Have you ever experienced a sinking feeling when you moved

You can banish these worries by designing a fitted wardrobe that fits seamlessly into the room. Your fitted wardrobe will be just the right size, with no wasted space. 3. Include Custom-Tailored Lighting in Your Fitted Wardrobe Is it hard to find things in your freestanding wardrobe at night, or on cloudy days, because it’s so dark inside? With a fitted wardrobe, you can custom-tailor the lighting you need — right into the design. You can even decide to include a light inside each cabinet, cupboard or drawer, and the light could be triggered to turn itself on each time that compartment is opened. 4. Just the Right Materials and Finishes Ever bought a freestanding wardrobe that you thought would be just perfect for your home — but then when you brought it home you discovered that the wood finish didn’t quite match the other surfaces and fixtures in the room? Have you considered spending hours, days or even weeks

stripping and sanding the paint off an old wardrobe so you could refinish it to coordinate better with its environment? When you build a fitted wardrobe, you can use materials that will complement your other furnishings flawlessly. 5. Contemporary, Style

Up-To-Date

A fitted wardrobe distinguishes your contemporary new home from older or vintage homes that don’t typically include such updated features. When you are building a brand new home it is sensible to seize the opportunity for including precisely the style of wardrobe that you desire. 6. Clean More Efficiently Tired of dusting the top of your wardrobe and cleaning dust bunnies out from underneath of it? And cobwebs out from between the walls and the freestanding wardrobe? While you can’t stop spiders from taking up residence in your new fitted wardrobe, at least you will

not be encouraging them with the inclusion of unused space. 7. A Fitted Wardrobe Is a Useful, Tangible Investment A fitted wardrobe becomes part of your home, and is an investment that can make your home more valuable. Unlike many investments, this is one that you can actually enjoy using every day; it is a tangible investment that you can enjoy, yet still reap some rewards from in the future if you ever decide to sell your home.

When you plan to build your new home, it is worth considering these seven advantages for including fitted wardrobes in the bedrooms or other rooms. ATF launches domestic heating oil service ATF Fuels has launched a new service supplying domestic heating oil to Jersey homes. The company has set out to offer the lowest prices in the island, based on the Jersey Fuel Watch website*. The firm can currently supply kerosene and also premium home kerosene to islanders. Head of operations Jonathan Best said: “Clearly there is a need for more competition in the heating oil market and we are seeing a clear demand for our service in these early days from customers wanting a better deal. “More than that, feedback on our customer service has been great, especially for our next day and emergency delivery services.” ATF is an independent, locally

owned and managed fuel distributor and has been providing aviation fuel at Jersey Airport since 2014. The company also has plans to expand its supply operation to include providing agricultural and commercial fuels to homes, farms and businesses in the future. “We’re very excited about shaking up the heating oil market and developing our offering further,” said Mr Best. “We already offer a top-up and remote monitoring service and a planned payment scheme, but we will shortly be launching an online ordering service. “We have a dedicated and experience team here and I think that customers value our commitment to providing the best prices and service.”

The Virtual Office! First I must declare some bias here! Being one so made as to not be capable of understanding today’s technologies I am drawn to earlier solutions like chalk and slates in place of databases and I prefer face to face meetings over email, SMS, Skype, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc etc.

By Vernon Breese

I exaggerate of course but you might understand my position if you have had to use SharePoint, the Cloud, (anything Telecoms related) open a bank account online or find an email message older than a fortnight in age! This said, when they changed thermal photocopy paper to plain A4, I thought it was time to ‘get with the programme’ – things are good in the office again. I cannot by any means claim to champion the latest developments in virtual currency trading, the challenges of bigdata management or people-less banking but I do embrace change and, I enjoy watching those

dynamic young professionals launch into the ether at Mach 2 without a tether. (So to say) Here’s the thing with the virtual function: around every corner of town there’s a different office to be found and they are each set up especially for the performance of their own business. Some office owners make their surroundings stylish and welcoming, others more functional and may even seem barren but whatever makes up your office, does it all have to be really yours!

Well, no. And this is where the virtual idea comes in because like so many other areas of performance today - the practice seems forever - to be ‘outsourcing’. The virtual office is just that: outsourced functionality. There is in fact nothing ‘virtual’ about it; it’s just elements of the usual office performed offsite elsewhere and the advantages of a virtual office are those you associate with the outsourcing of anything: lower costs, access to professional specialists and pre-tested systems to name but a few examples.

This holds real appeal if you are just starting up or are a modest sized business. If you cannot afford office space at all then the virtual office option is a great solution. You get all the trimmings of a professional office at a fraction of the cost. So what do you get from the typical ‘virtual office’? In truth, you get ‘virtually’ anything save for perhaps: drive, enthusiasm for a product, determination to succeed, your ethics, resilience, funding, strategy, forethought, dynamism, entrepreneurship, best practice for your specific work or the clever idea which sets you off in business in the first place. I may sound a little facetious here but the point I make is: you do have to have a business! The entrepreneurship and all the clever stuff is required of you in the first place – don’t think that you can go to a virtual office services provider and pay for automatic or guaranteed success. (That’s like paying an estate agent and expecting honesty.)

In Brief Collas Crill advises Market Tech Group on £900 million facility Collas Crill acted for the Market Tech Group in a £900 million secured debt facility from AIG Asset Management (Europe) Limited, to refinance their existing facility with Nomura International Plc and Bank of Cyprus. Market Tech Holdings Limited, the ultimate parent company for the Market Tech Group, is a Guernsey incorporated AIM listed company with a market capitalisation of c. £975m. Market Tech provides a leading online and offline retail destination, by pairing its online e-commerce business with some of the most iconic retail buildings in London, including the Camden Market Lock and Camden Market Stables.

Mourant Ozannes Here are some of the tasks and services you could expect of a typical virtual office service. This is not at all an exhaustive list but it does give you an idea of what they do: 1) Commonly they provide a convenient location and sometimes even a ‘prestigious’ address centrally located in the relevant town or city; 2) Provide post managing and forwarding services; 3) Offer meeting rooms and hosting support 4) Offer secretarial, PA and event support services 5) Run payroll, banking and billing 6) General administration These last three, offered on a pay-as-go basis, sit well in the virtual office. Your costs are limited to the time it takes to perform the function. You don’t have to employ a team of people to effect the processes. One of the biggest advantages is that using a virtual office frees up time for you to focus on the business at hand, and leave the general administration to people who can do it better at less cost! Simple. The demand for virtual offices is growing and with technology today this option is increasingly viable and may even be a good space saving solution where virtual office businesses provide

‘offices’ to a host of users or where space might be at a premium? The key to successful outsourcing of your offices and services is being able to rely upon an enterprise that really has got it right and manages your business unfailingly. If you run your own office and make

mistakes you can mitigate most risks by reacting accordingly, a virtual office is unlikely to be able to do this for you so you need one that doesn’t make mistakes! The two key reservations most people hold with a virtual office are firstly that they don’t feel like they ‘have a home base’ and

sometimes this is needed to foster team work and collegiate thinking and secondly that individual businesses could find themselves being hosted in the same arena as a direct competitor. I am sure our virtual office services providers are on the case already…

“The demand for virtual offices is growing and with technology today this option is increasingly viable.”

partners named in 2015 Citywealth IFC Power Women Top 200 Five Mourant Ozannes partners: Rachael McDonald in the BVI, Jessica Roland in Guernsey and Felicia De Laat, Helen Ruelle and Jacqueline Richomme in Jersey have made it into Citywealth’s ‘IFC Power Women Top 200 List 2015.’ Recognising 200 of the most powerful women in government, private wealth, education, private client advisory and philanthropy across the world’s leading International Financial Centres, the list focuses on influencers as well as professionals and celebrates powerful women from diverse backgrounds.

Italy Removes Blacklisting Jersey and Guernsey are no longer on any Italian ‘black lists’ and will be included on Italy’s ‘white lists’. Among other benefits, it is anticipated that this will enable Italian resident investors to invest into Guernsey and Jersey domiciled structures including the many investment funds that are set up in the Channel Islands. With both Guernsey and Jersey having been given a clean bill of health by the European Securities and Marketing Authority for the AIFMD marketing passport into Europe, this is an important step for the islands in being able to attract European business.

YOUR FIRST PORT OF CALL FOR FINANCIAL ADVICE Lumiere Wealth is fast becoming recognised as one of Jersey’s leading Independent Wealth Management providers. Based at Castle Quay, Lumiere Wealth began life in April 2015 and is regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission. The firm currently employs a team of twelve Jersey resident staff with further recruitment planned for 2016. Lumiere Wealth’s commitment to Jersey is demonstrated further in its recent acquisition of additional office space at Castle Quay, which will be ready in early 2016. “At Lumiere Wealth, we offer a bespoke, independent, wealth planning advisory service to private clients, corporate intermediaries and corporate clients. In addition to wealth management, our scope of services includes investment products, retirement planning, life cover, income protection, critical illness cover, key man insurance, private medical insurance, life policies and employee benefit schemes. We provide a first class, friendly and professional service to our clients. Our qualified consultants have over 200 years of experience collectively and all are very proud of the relationships they have built and continue to build with their clients. Recognising that everyone’s needs and financial circumstances are unique, we adopt a bespoke approach and a tailored solution for each and every one of our clients. Initial client meetings are held at our cost and an appointed Independent Wealth Manager conducts a thorough financial review in the form of a six stage approach to fully understand the client’s circumstances and future goals. The Wealth Manager will then create an investment plan

to help enhance capital/produce income, or both and to achieve the best returns with the lowest possible volatility. Once the client is happy with their proposed plan and the anticipated costs, their Wealth Manager will arrange a further discussion and assist their client with completion of the relevant documentation. Once the plan has been implemented, it will then be closely monitored by their Wealth Manager, who will send them regular reports and updates. Where possible, Lumiere Wealth hold regular face to face reviews with their clients to ensure their aspirations continue to be met. In addition to our private client offering, we are able to offer

wealth management services to both corporate clients and corporate employees. Lumiere Wealth provides advice on how to make the funds within a corporate body or a trust work harder, or assist in building a remuneration package, for example. We can speak with corporate clients directly or, if the company already has an investment team, provide them with regulated alternative investment options so that they may deal directly with their clients. We are also able to offer corporate clients a range of employee solutions to support their business and have recently appointed an Independent Wealth Manager who has particular expertise in this area. This individual brings much sought-after, specialist advice

on a full compliment of Group Employee benefits products, including Death in Service, Income Protection, Group Critical Illness and Healthcare Trusts. Whilst many Jersey employers already invest in employee benefits for their staff, they often question the value they receive in return for their investment, which is frequently down to a lack of communication with the membership provider and limited understanding of the products and the benefits they provide. At Lumiere Wealth, we can resolve this issue by providing Total Reward Statements for our corporate clients and ‘Flexible Benefits’, which are becoming increasingly popular. Flexible benefits provide an element of choice for the member from a wider range of benefits, and this approach puts the employer back in control of their budget and empowers staff to become involved in the benefit selection process. Our new Employee Benefits remit works well in tandem with Lumiere Wealth’s dedicated Private

Medical Insurance (PMI) offering, to provide a one-stop corporate advisory solution for Jersey businesses. Our dedicated PMI Specialist has a suite of different PMI products that he is able to offer his clients and, being in a position to review the whole PMI market, he can offer the best value medical, dental and corporate ‘cash back’ schemes to Lumiere Wealth’s customers. We consistently strive to seek the optimum solution for our clients and the majority of our new PMI clients are now a direct referral from existing customers to their colleagues or personal friends. From our waterfront offices, we aim to be the first port of call for financial advice and would welcome the opportunity to demonstrate how we can help with wealth management and financial planning needs.” Lumiere Wealth is based at Millais House, Castle Quay, La Rue De L’Etau, St Helier, Jersey JE2 3EG and is regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission.

Thrive with The Hive, by local author; The Busy Queen Bee. "A practical guide to service excellence with lessons from nature’s most powerful business organisation – The Beehive" In this book, The Busy Queen Bee takes a look at the importance to a successful business of its customers. She uses a powerful analogy from nature, describing the work of the humble Bee and its ultra efficient work ethic.

service is, not just for individual businesses, but for a successful economy. For, if businesses thrive by providing excellent service, the local economy will thrive too. Like those industrious insects, the bees, we all have a vital role to play.

This ‘bee book’ was born following a light-hearted moment when I remarked to a friend that I was just like the queen bee, and all my shoppers were my little bees, who go off and work for me and return with the pollen (results for our clients). The notion of ‘The Hive’ really appealed to me. So I began my research into the queen bee and her role in the beehive. I soon discovered a book called ‘The Wisdom of Bees’, by Michael O’Malley.

The clues to their successes are to be found in their clever social organisation: • They have clear objectives • They are excellent communicators • They are able to quickly take in and consolidate information and transform that information into co-ordinated action • They are reliable workers that are very good at what they do

This was a total revelation as, being a beekeeper, O’Malley was able to talk in details about bees and, by looking hard at the hive, he created 25 lessons on what the hive can teach business about leadership, efficiency and growth. I love the analogy of the queen bee leader and her harmonious groups of co-ordinated, efficient and productive bees. As such, in 2014, I re-branded myself as The Busy Queen Bee. My mission as The Busy Queen Bee is to show businesses how crucial excellent customer

The concept of the beehive provides a systemic way of conceptualising the workplace and the institutional strategies and operations. The beehive shows us the power of working together to achieve goals; creating a harmonious hub where everyone plays their role in contributing to the higher mission. This book provides my own version of easy, practical guidelines to businesses, large and small, to provide immediate and noticeable benefits. But it should also be helpful to bees in order to understand what part you are contributing to the achievement of the organisation's goals. We shall be looking specifically at the ten "buzz" words to follow to provide your internal and external customers with an unforgettable experience: 1. Assess 2. Develop 3. Train 4. Measure 5. Act 6. Feedback 7. Consistency

8. Value 9. Loyalty 10. Service Culture Ten simple steps for successful customer-centric businesses; to start changing the delivering of a service to actually providing, consistently, their customers with an unforgettable experience every time they walk through their doors. I marvelled at the complexity and intellectual capacity of bees and soon realised that this methodology could also be applied to customer service. Furthermore, I wanted to create a guide that could help businesses to provide excellent customer service and, given that enterprise has recently been through one of the worst times in history, I knew this was the right path to follow. And so, I did. Almost three years later, 418 pages and 67489 words, I am delighted to be launching Thrive with The Hive, on Monday 8th

February. You can download your copy at leanpub.com/ ThrivewithTheHive or contact me on info@thebusyqueenbee. com if you want your own signed hardcopy. Jersey named best IFC for the fourth consecutive year at Citywealth Awards Jersey’s credentials as a centre for private wealth management have been underlined once again, being named ‘International Financial Centre (IFC) of the Year’ in the annual Citywealth IFC Awards. It is the fourth consecutive year Jersey has been awarded the accolade, this year being selected by the panel of judges above other shortlisted jurisdictions Guernsey, Isle of Man, Bermuda, Malta and Singapore. Richard Corrigan, Deputy CEO, Jersey Finance, accepted the award at a gala ceremony, which was held at the Grange City Hotel in London. Organised by leading events and publishing group Citywealth, the Awards were established five years ago to highlight the expertise and service excellence

of advisers and managers in the private wealth sector in major IFCs. They are judged by an international panel of highly respected practitioners from all sectors, with winners being selected based on their excellence, achievement, innovation, expertise and service. Geoff Cook, CEO of Jersey Finance said, ‘To have been

recognised through these Awards for four consecutive years is no small achievement and reflects Jersey’s consistent ability to adapt and evolve through a rapidly shifting private wealth landscape. We are delighted to receive this recognition and would like to thank the judges and our business partners for their help in positioning Jersey as the gold standard in IFCs.”

CISE sees 8% rise in new listings More than 400 securities were listed on the Channel Islands Securities Exchange (CISE) in 2015. Investment funds, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and convertible bonds were among the 423 securities which listed on the CISE last year. That represents an 8% increase in the number of securities listed compared to the previous year, taking the total number of listings to 2,173.

to see this increase in new business during 2015. We’ve seen a wide range of new listings, including both open and closed ended funds but notable growth areas have been REITs, where already we have a number of further applications for listing in the coming weeks, and also convertible bonds, where we expect to see a further pipeline of business in 2016.”

During the period, the market capitalisation of the CISE increased by £61.6 billion (21%).

During last year, China Cinda Finance (2014) II Limited became the first issuer with an ultimate parent company domiciled in China to be listed on the CISE.

Fiona Le Poidevin, CEO of the CISE, said: “It’s really pleasing

Mrs Le Poidevin, who took the helm at the start of 2015, added:

“2015 was extremely busy not just with new listings but also other developments. At the start of last year we opened our office in Jersey and our Guernsey office moved premises during the summer. We also updated our systems, rebranded, made changes to our rules for listing debt, started a review of our rules for listing investment vehicles and introduced new rules for Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs). “The changes we made last year have put us in a strong position and I’m looking forward to continuing with this work and welcoming more new business to the CISE during 2016.”

Recruitment, HR & Training

The Higher Education Fair back for 24th year running at the University Centre Jersey, Highlands College The Higher Education Fair is being held at Highlands College this year on Thursday 10th March 2016 1.30pm-6.30pm, organised by Careers Jersey, sponsored by Capita Asset Services and in partnership with University College Jersey (UCJ) at Highlands College. As the Leading Provider of Higher Education in Jersey, UCJ is proud to be welcoming sixth-form and mature students from across the island to the Concert Hall at Highlands to find out more about the options available for studying at degree level both on and off the island. There will be over 70 exhibitors from the UK and local institutions, able to answer questions about studying a degree in a wide variety of disciplines, as well as giving advice and guidance on entry criteria, UCAS applications, and also the important social aspects of University life. Ben Bennett (Head of UCJ) at Highlands said: “This is a great opportunity for our students to showcase what excellent HE provision exists here in Jersey. We have been going through a very exciting period of change in the last 12 months and we have built on very solid foundations in terms of the range and quality of

what we provide our adult learners. Current UCJ students will be on hand at the Higher Education Fair to meet potential students and to talk about their experiences. UCJ staff will also be delivering presentations on all subject areas offered.” Since 1993, islanders have been able to study for a degree at Highlands College, working in partnership with Plymouth University and London South Bank University. The range of degrees now available on-island has grown significantly, as well as the inevitable improvements in quality and student experience, which come from two decades of organisational learning. Students at UCJ can take a degree in business, finance, sports management, IT, childhood studies, social sciences, construction management, art, and architectural technology. There are a range of pathways including both full and part-time. Over 150 students form part of a college community that numbers over 1000, and offers the full range of pastoral support and extra-curricular activities. The UCJ model focuses on employability. Graduates are highly sought-after by employers both locally and abroad and degree programmes all embed a significant

element of work-based learning enabling students to gain the skills employers seek and – perhaps more importantly – a professional network which can help with that all-important first step on the job ladder. UCJ is entering an exciting period of growth and is well placed right at the centre of the ongoing island conversation about a full university for the Channel Islands. Potential students are encouraged to call up and speak to an admissions tutor or student advisor,

or arrange a visit to the campus to meet with programme teams. Glenda Rivoallan (Vice Principal – Lifelong Learning) adds: “The HE Fair promises to be a great event and Highlands College are proud to be working in partnership with Careers Jersey in ensuring that adult learners regardless of age have the opportunity to explore further education options. This is a very exciting time in the life of people who are about to make important life changing decisions, it is a privilege for the college to host such an important event. Whether students are progressing from school, considering a career change or returning to education later in life, this is an ideal event to get you closer to your career aspirations and put goals into action”. UCJ here at Highlands have a proud tradition of offering HE courses and employability rates are way above figures cited by UK institutions. I look forward to welcoming local partners, exhibitors, prospective students and parents/guardians on the day.” For more information on the Higher Education Fair please contact Zoe Hibbs marketing@highlands.ac.uk or call 608633.
