The Power of One

O

ne of the big things we accomplished last year is the unification of the university and the hospitals under One Jefferson. The idea was to break down the barriers separating our academic, research and clinical enterprises. One Jefferson brings us all together and sparks new ways of thinking, better problem-solving and greater collaboration and innovation for meeting the healthcare challenges of today and setting the agenda for transforming health care tomorrow. To support One Jefferson, we articulated a new mission that defines who we are: “Health is all we do.” At Jefferson, we do just one thing — health — and we do it exceptionally well. Our new vision statement sums up our aspiration: “We will reimagine health, health education and discovery to create unparalleled value.” Jefferson has been pushing boundaries, breaking paradigms and inventing better ways of training doctors and healing patients since 1824. Medical firsts are in our DNA. Ours is a brilliant 190-year history on which to build. One Jefferson honors our past and moves us forward with shared purpose. As great as we are—as great as we’ve been—what we know is that if we keep doing everything the same way, the future isn’t going to be as bright. That’s where our dynamic Blueprint for Strategic Action comes in. It’s a smarter, more nimble and flexible way of being an academic medical center that promotes a seamless clinical enterprise, forward-thinking education, high-impact science, programs of global distinction and patients and families first. Our approach to strategic action is forward-looking, innovative and entrepreneurial. It doesn’t just strain to see over the horizon: it reimagines what’s there—and then takes steps to create a new kind of health care, a better way to educate tomorrow’s healthcare professionals and a more effective way of using science to bring the best ideas to people who need them. We have left behind notions of mine and yours, and embraced the concept of ours. Philanthropic partnerships have broken down the boundaries even further, uniting Thomas Jefferson University and the Jefferson Health System with the community we serve. As One Jefferson, we are not wondering what tomorrow will bring: we are building the future of health care together, right now and right here at Jefferson. Thanks for building with us.

Every One Counts

O

ne of the great things about the idea behind One Jefferson is that every “One” counts. The university and each school and department, the hospitals and practice plans and each person all have something special and important to contribute to the synergy of Jefferson. And it’s not only the healthcare professionals, faculty and staff associated with Jefferson who make a difference. Our alumni and the people in our community are a part of One Jefferson, too. When it comes to realizing our vision, every “One” matters. As One Jefferson, we are responding quickly and creatively to the challenges ahead through innovation and collaboration. We are seizing opportunities, creating new ideas and opening up directions that will transform health care, health-sciences education and medical research. Jefferson is the kind of place people want to invest in, not because of our distinguished history, but because of our vision and optimism and energy, which enable us to continue making history. It’s already happening. This fiscal year, the Sidney Kimmel Foundation contributed $110 million to Jefferson to name the Sidney Kimmel Medical College. We are quickly becoming the place where people can already see the future of health care transformed, and they want to be a part of it.

Change is in the air at Jefferson and the promise of amazing things is taking shape— better healing, smarter

These kinds of philanthropic investments are vital for Jefferson’s future. Dr. Klasko never tires of pointing out that the “old math” that once supported academic medical centers—NIH funding, clinical reimbursements and tuition—no longer adds up. Going forward, the new math will encompass philanthropy as well as revenue from Jefferson’s Innovation Pillar. Every “One”—alumni, friends and benefactors—is a part of that equation, and every “One,” as a philanthropic partner, has an indispensable role to play in our research, education and clinical-care mission as well as in community engagement. Change is in the air at Jefferson and the promise of amazing things is taking shape— better healing, smarter learning, greater discovery and more service to our neighbors. This Philanthropy Report is an honor roll of alumni and friends who are helping to make it all happen. I, for “One,” am proud and profoundly grateful for your generosity—and delighted that you have joined us. It’s an exciting time to be a part of One Jefferson. Thank you, “One” and all.

learning, greater discovery and more service to our neighbors.

Jefferson Fund

T

he Jefferson Fund (formerly known as the Annual Fund or Annual Giving) comprises generous annual gifts from our entire Jefferson community of alumni, faculty, staff, friends and patients. These unrestricted gifts ensure that we continue to achieve our standard of excellence and help us attract and retain outstanding physicians as well as renowned faculty and staff; support our students; and constantly update and expand our campus and programmatic infrastructures. An annual gift to the Jefferson Fund makes an immediate impact. Here are a few examples of how annual contributions make a difference at Jefferson every day: • Annual contributions aid student-run organizations like JeffHOPE, which relies solely on the generosity of alumni and friends in order to provide critical healthcare services to underserved Philadelphia men, women and children while also providing valuable hands-on learning experiences. • Jefferson Fund gifts enhance students’ experiences by offering essential financial support for those who need it, ensure the recruitment of top faculty and attract top researchers actively engaged in their fields. • Annual gifts also fund programs of distinction like the Prostate Cancer Program. Jefferson pioneered a multidisciplinary approach to caring for prostate cancer patients and is recognized as one of eight “Centers of Excellence” by the National Cancer Institute for its care model and comprehensive research program.

“Jefferson has been pushing boundaries, breaking paradigms and inventing better ways of training doctors and healing patients since 1824.” Stephen K. Klasko, MD, MBA, President and CEO Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health System

The Sidney Kimmel Foundation

Y

ou may be familiar with Sidney Kimmel because he is the lead supporter of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, home of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Or because he is one of the world’s top cancer philanthropists, having donated more than $400 million to endow multiple research facilities and establishing the Kimmel Scholars Program, which awards grants to the most promising young cancer scientists across the nation. Either way, you can now find his name on another institution: the Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) at Thomas Jefferson University, formerly known as Jefferson Medical College. In spring 2014, through the Sidney Kimmel Foundation, Mr. Kimmel committed a $110 million gift—the largest in Jefferson’s history—that will provide financial aid for medical students; expand basic and clinical research programs; upgrade campus facilities; draw new faculty as well as visiting scholars; and much more. This investment in Jefferson will be transformational as the institution strives to realize its vision of reimagining health, health education and discovery. When asked why he chose to give to Jefferson, Mr. Kimmel—who splits his time between New York and California with his wife, Caroline—said, “Because I’m a Philadelphian. I always have been, even though I don’t live here now. I’m very fond of the people of Jefferson …I sense a new burst of energy with Steve Klasko coming in and revitalizing the entire operation. My heart has always been in Philadelphia, and Jefferson is the soul of this city.” Jefferson President and CEO Stephen Klasko, MD, MBA, said Mr. Kimmel’s commitment “means everything. To say it’s transformational is an understatement. It’s transformational because of the sheer dollar amount and what that can do to help us serve the community and become nationally and internationally recognized. It’s transformational because Sidney Kimmel investing in us and believing in us enough to put his name on our medical college is huge and sends an amazing signal.” Known for his humble, down-to-earth demeanor, Mr. Kimmel has never forgotten his roots. Raised in West and South Philadelphia, he grew up without luxury, his family moving often because his father, a cab driver, couldn’t afford to pay rent. Mr. Kimmel’s first job—setting up pins in a bowling alley—netted him $2 a day. But he ultimately found a position with a clothing manufacturer and began working his way up in the fashion industry. He branched out in 1970 to found Jones Apparel Group, gradually turning it into an empire. The company went public in 1991. As his career thrived, he formed two foundations—the Sidney Kimmel Foundation and its subsidiary, the Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research—and began making significant philanthropic contributions to organizations promoting the arts, education, health sciences and Jewish heritage. Already a longtime member of the Jefferson community thanks to his support of the National Cancer Institute-designated Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, Mr. Kimmel has built on his incredible legacy with his new and historic commitment to the medical college. His generosity will have an enormous impact both personally and professionally on SKMC students and faculty, but its influence will extend far beyond the limits of Jefferson’s campus to help ensure an optimistic future for health care nationwide.

Stella Jedrziewski Wawrynovic, DN ’39 Scholarship Jefferson School of Nursing

A

fter emigrating from Poland to a small town called Osceola Mills, Pa., in the early 1900s, coal miner Stanley Jedrziewski and his wife, Mary, believed the key to achieving the “American dream” was higher education. Money was tight, but they insisted on putting all 10 of their children through college—including sending their oldest daughter, Stella, to study nursing at Jefferson. “I was the youngest daughter in the family, so I was only 2 when Stella left for Jefferson,” recalls her sister, Genevieve Williams. “My first memories of her involve seeing a pretty, sophisticated city girl who wore a nursing uniform when she came home to visit.” Stella completed her diploma nursing degree in 1939 and stayed at Jefferson to work as a registered nurse until joining the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. After the war, she returned to her job at Jefferson until 1949, when she married Army veteran Frank Wawrynovic and moved back to central Pennsylvania to help him establish a forestry services business. She spent the rest of her career managing the company’s office but never forgot her nursing roots. “She was very proud of being a Jefferson nurse and always made a point of telling people that’s what she was,” Williams says. The Wawrynovics experienced great tragedy during their lifetime, losing their two sons and only daughter to illness. They lived frugally, donating income from their successful business to support research into the conditions that afflicted their children. Their passion for funding medical research was surpassed only by their passion for providing educational opportunities for young people in their community; the couple helped pay for more than 50 young people across their region to attend college. They also established several scholarships at Frank’s alma mater, Penn State University. Frank passed away in 2005, and Stella remained in their home until shortly before her death in September 2013. As executor of Stella’s estate, Williams chose to honor her sister’s commitment to education by allocating funds to create the Stella Jedrziewski Wawrynovic, DN ’39 Scholarship at the Jefferson School of Nursing (JSN). The scholarship fund, which with a match from Jefferson totals $500,000, is one of JSN’s largest in history. “Every year on her birthday, Stella was so excited to receive flowers from the Jefferson Nursing Alumni Association. She bragged about them to everyone. I knew naming a Jefferson scholarship for her was fitting,” Williams says. “Stella was always giving without asking for anything in return. She led a simple life without luxuries. She didn’t even own a microwave—but if someone else needed one, she would be the first to go out and buy it for them. What she did have was an education, and she wanted to give others the same opportunity.” JSN Dean Beth Ann Swan, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, says she is grateful for the generosity of those who understand education’s critical role in our society. “By endowing scholarships, our generous alumni and their families transform the dreams of many into reality,” Swan says. “Students who receive scholarships feel a real connection to the larger Jefferson community by witnessing firsthand the care and support of our alumni and friends.”

Endowed Professorships

E

ndowing a professorship is among the highest forms of philanthropy at a university; these generous investments ensure the long-term stability of a department’s academic programs while celebrating the accomplishments of the individuals who hold the named positions. Professorships signal the importance the community places on Jefferson, serving as a powerful recruitment tool in bringing the most talented physicians and scientists to campus. Over the last year, Jefferson celebrated the investitures of nine faculty members to newly established endowed professorships: The Jane and Leonard Korman Professorship in Pulmonary Medicine (1) Established by Jane and Leonard Korman Held by Gregory C. Kane, MD The George Fritz Blechschmidt, MD Professorship in Clinical Skills (2) Established by the late George Fritz Blechschmidt, MD ’58 Held by Dale D. Berg, MD The Ralph J. Anne Wilms

W

hen Anne Wilms was admitted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on June 14, 2011, her demeanor was not what one would expect of someone about to have brain surgery. She wasn’t worried and scared, but calm and confident everything would go well. Mrs. Wilms attributes her composure to her care team, led by neurosurgeon James J. Evans, MD. “My brain tumor was the size of a softball, which sounds so terrifying,” she says. “But the entire staff, Dr. Evans and the nurses were so calm. They never appeared overly concerned and were very positive. It helped me deal with the surgery and really helped my family deal with it.” After she was diagnosed, Mrs. Wilms, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., was referred to Jefferson’s Minimally Invasive Cranial Base Surgery Center, which offers a treatment alternative for people whose brain tumors historically were inaccessible or required extensive and lengthy operations. Jefferson surgeons use endoscopic navigation through the nose and nasal sinuses to gain access to the cranial base and brain. Micro-instrumentation and enhanced computer navigation provide Jefferson surgeons with better visualization and improved access to the tumor. This minimally invasive procedure results in improved resections, the preservation of neurological structures and function, reduced surgical complication rates and reduced postoperative morbidity. Patients can also expect less discomfort, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery. Before she was admitted, Mrs. Wilms knew all of this and more. “Dr. Evans truly went above and beyond what I had expected,” she says. “He took time to sit with me and my family to explain the process of my care and gave us a presentation on the whole evolution of brain surgery—what it used to be, what it is today and what the hopes are for the future. This was a fourhour conversation that he had with us on a Saturday afternoon during his personal time.” During this presentation, Dr. Evans told Mrs. Wilms the odds were in her favor, and he was right. The surgery went well; she required minimal recovery time with no residual effects. In the three years since her tumor was removed, Mrs. Wilms has been showing her gratitude by supporting the Center and Dr. Evans’ research. “My hope for the support I give will be more medical advancements and new procedures that will be far easier for patients and surgeons. I know this is possible because of the research here at Jefferson and the progress they’ve made since I had my surgery,” she says. Supporting the Center is Mrs. Wilms’ way of saying thanks for everything Jefferson has done for her and her family. “All of the care I received at Jefferson from the nurses, Dr. Evans and the entire staff was extraordinary,” she says. “You can feel the compassion and desire they have to make you feel as comfortable as possible. I felt like I needed to do something in return for the wonderful care I received.”

Charles H. Klieman, MD ’67

T

hroughout his distinguished career, Charles H. Klieman, MD ’67, made remarkable accomplishments that brought pride to the Jefferson community. A renowned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, Dr. Klieman practiced at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, Calif., for nearly 40 years, holding key elective positions including chief of surgery and chief of staff. He also was an integral part of the team in the hospital’s emergency trauma center, the largest and busiest facility of its kind in Los Angeles County. Dr. Klieman was a prolific inventor whose ingenuity benefited physicians and patients worldwide by producing a host of medical innovations. Among his most significant advances was the modern hemostatic clip applier. When he underwent surgical training in the late 1960s, operating-room staff loaded clips into an applier one at a time, making the process tedious and time consuming. Knowing there had to be a better way, he went on to develop a disposable, plastic applier fed by a cartridge holding 20 staples, making vessel ligation not only more efficient for the surgeon but safer for the patient. He also devised the first articulating laparoscopic instrument—scissors that allowed surgeons to choose a precise angle of cut. The device is still marketed today. Dr. Klieman made many of his advances before the “Internet Age,” and to help other physicians with obtaining patents, developing prototypes and marketing their inventions, he co-founded the American College of Physician Inventors and served as its first president. The group disbanded as the Internet made patent guidelines readily available. A Jefferson supporter for more than three decades, Dr. Klieman established a legacy on campus through both his professional achievements and his longtime generosity. He invested in many Jefferson initiatives, including the state-of-the-art Dorrance H. Hamilton Building, in which he named an examination room in the Dr. Robert and Dorothy Rector Clinical Skills and Simulation Center and dedicated two seats in the Connelly Auditorium in memory of his parents. Following his unexpected death in September 2013, Dr. Klieman’s legacy grew because he had provided for Jefferson in his will. An unrestricted contribution through his estate is benefiting students and faculty at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, helping to ensure they have access to leading-edge technology, curricula and facilities. During his life, Dr. Klieman showed commitment to each facet of Jefferson’s mission—and now, after his passing, he is continuing to help the institution thrive. Several years ago, during a conversation with a staff member, he explained his inspiration for supporting Jefferson. “I’ve enjoyed a long career and am thankful for all of the opportunities I’ve had, starting with my education at Jefferson,” he said. “I credit Jefferson with much of my success and am happy to be in a place where I can give back.”

The Arcadia Foundation Arcadia. The word itself means a place of peace and harmony. It is therefore fitting that the Arcadia Foundation, led by its president, Marilyn Steinbright, this year provided generous support for the Scott Memorial Library, where Jefferson students gather quietly to study and learn together.

A

s the “intellectual hub” of Jefferson’s campus, the Library must continually evolve to meet the evergrowing needs of our students, particularly in terms of technology. As more and more of the resources used by Jefferson students and faculty migrate to online platforms, we are implementing a new vision for the Library— which, thanks in part to a January 2014 Arcadia Foundation grant, is being transformed from a building primarily used for book storage into an integrated learning center, complete with collaborative study spaces and access to valuable teaching tools and invaluable archives.

and technological capabilities, the plans involve crafting new space for Jefferson’s extraordinary archives collection, one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s premier non-museum collections of rare medical books and objects. This collection has long been viewed by appointment only due to the lack of an adequate and secure display space, but the Arcadia Foundation is changing that. The renovations enabled by the Foundation will create permanent display cases and interactive learning stations so the general public can join Jefferson students, professors and researchers in taking advantage of these tremendous resources.

In 2010, Jefferson began a major Library overhaul, renovating its second floor to create space that nurtures curiosity, enhances research and fosters teamwork. Dark and cramped shelving areas have been replaced with an open floor plan, group study tables and 10 private, high-tech study rooms, each featuring whiteboards, internet access and large computer screens to facilitate interactive learning.

Based in Norristown, Pa., the Arcadia Foundation was founded in 1964 by Marilyn Steinbright’s mother, Edith, and has contributed to a broad range of educational, ecological, art, health and welfare and civic organizations. The Foundation has backed Jefferson in various ways over nearly two decades, including through a significant investment in the Dorrance H. Hamilton Building at the very heart of campus. Opened in 2007, the Hamilton Building houses the Dr. Robert and Dorothy Rector Clinical Skills & Simulation Center, where students from across the university work together in integrated teams to learn how to deliver effective, efficient, multidisciplinary care to tomorrow’s patients.

“These suites were an immediate success with our students,” said Anthony Frisby, PhD, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Library. “Our library is one of the busiest hubs on campus, and these new rooms provide much-needed space for Jefferson students and support campuswide interprofessional educational activities.”

The completion of the state-ofthe-art Hamilton Building would not have been possible without the Arcadia Foundation—and now, through its gift to the Scott Memorial Library, the Foundation is enhancing another essential educational facility at Jefferson.

Now, with the Arcadia Foundation’s support, Jefferson can move forward with transforming the Library’s third and fourth floors. In addition to increasing group-work space

1824 SOCIETY Building a better Jefferson requires careful planning. Members of the 1824 Society, named for the year of Jefferson’s founding, support the institution’s future through charitable planned giving. They have generously named Jefferson a beneficiary of their estate plan through their will, a life income trust or a retirement plan. Gifts like these have substantial influence on the quality of education and patient care that we provide every day. Members of the 1824 Society understand the critical need to strengthen Jefferson’s future by providing gifts that will enhance our endowment—a perpetual fund whose income supports initiatives institution-wide including scholarships, endowed professorships, patient care, academic and research programs and laboratory space. Planned gifts are the ultimate expression of confidence in Jefferson, and their impact lasts for generations. While planned gifts often result in benefits to the donor, they also serve as “gifts that keep on giving” to Jefferson over decades and even centuries. In addition to having the satisfaction of helping our patients, students and faculty thrive, 1824 Society members receive a lapel pin, recognition in various publications and invitations to special events. Listed below are gifts received through planned gifts during fiscal year 2014.
