JCI Barnsley in partnership with Barnsley College Here in JCI Barnsley we are all about making an impact! Being part of JCI is all about making an impact on your local community and here in Barnsley we take that very seriously. As part of our commitment to making an impact we have teamed up with Barnsley College to touch the lives of our local community and show that no matter how small you are you can make an IMPACT.

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009 JCI Barnsley, Creative Oates and Barnsley College worked together to deliver a session during Global Entrepreneurship Week that aimed inspire new ways of thinking, help to generate more great ideas and get the most out of everything you do! This session was very successful, going on to win one of only 240 High Impact medal. Staff and students form the Business and Management Department took part in the interactive session for generating new ideas. I’m hoping that with new members within the chamber that we can create another successful event for 2010.

Motoring at Barnsley College The first of Barnsley College training events involved an introduction to motor mechanics. A successful turnout of mainly women and a token male, lucky to be surrounded by a group of wonderful ladies, were taught essential car maintenance. The session consisted of information on how simple tasks carried out every week can help maintain your car and prevent damage and breakdowns, which could cost hundreds of pounds to repair. I must say that our teacher was not hopeful when the first question to be asked was "how do you open the bonnet?" and most of us looked at each other in a confused manner! Through the session we became more competent and learned some valuable skills that will help us in our fight to show men that we are capable of changing the oil just as well as they can. I must say however, I am not convinced by the dirt associated with such tasks, when offered plastic gloves I was truly tempted!

Regional Extempore This is a Regional Competition that is held within the JCI Yorkshire region. Extempore is to speak without planning or preparation, also known as off the cuff. I attended training before the event on Public Speaking and Debating hosted by JCI Sheffield then entered the competition. Much to my amazement I won the competition. Several students and staff form the Business and Management Department attended the event and commented on the supportive and positive atmosphere.

The Art of Engagement 60 JCI members were lucky enough to be invited by Wayne Clarks to attend The Art of Engagement which is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. This purpose built environment is designed to help leaders and managers experience, and therefore understand, how best to engage their employees. And it does this by bringing together a decade of best practice of the most engaged organisations in the UK. Staff and students from Barnsley College attended the event and were noticed for their enthusiasm and participation.

To the right is Jessica Barton a student on the BTEC National Diploma in Business – Jessica stood in front of 60 JCI members from across the UK to put her suggestions across for improving JCI membership.

Princes Trust Prince’s Trust/JCI UK Enterprise Project The aim of the project is to combine both business and community elements of JCI by forming small teams and creating an entrepreneurial/fundraising project over the summer to raise money for the charity. 3 Barnsley College Students agreed to manage and run the project. The students decided to raise money by having a sweet stall at the college tutorial day. The students had to create a business plan, source materials and run the event. The students (Jessica Barton, Sam Brown and Ben Allen) raised a good total of £175. The winner of the challenge will be announced at the JCI National Congress in November.
