On the following pages you will find arts opportunities that you can enjoy virtually and, in some cases, in person. Although as the situation continues to evolve, we encourage you to call ahead before venturing out to your favorite venue to verify that the event is still in person. A highlight of this season is the release of “Violins and Hope | From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall” by Daniel Levin MFA at The Museum of Jewish Art, Religion, and Culture. The book, and accompanying exhibition, is the successor to the “Amnon’s Workshop” that was commissioned for the Federation’s Roe Green Gallery in 2015. In addition to more than 30 images, the books includes a compelling foreword by The Cleveland Orchestra Music Director, Franz Welser-Möst. We hope to opening the doors safely to our own Roe Green Gallery in January with Shony Rivnay’s “Unfolding Nature: Dancing through Waves,” followed by “If You Thirst for a Homeland” by Flameworked Glass Art by Dafna Kaffeman. As always, we are filled with gratitude to our many individual and foundation supporters who make it possible for us to bring the best of Israeli arts and culture to our community. We are equally filled with appreciation for all of you, our audience members and program participants who enthusiastically attend our events. We hope to see you soon in person. Until then, stay safe and be well. Warm regards, Roe Green

VIOLINS AND

HOPE

FROM THE HOLOCAUST TO SYMPHONY HALL Photography Exhibition by Daniel Levin, MFA Presented by The Temple Museum of Jewish Art, Religion, and Culture of The Temple-Tifereth Israel

November 12, 2021 – February 27, 2022 The Hartzmark Center The Temple-Tifereth Israel 26000 Shaker Boulevard, Beachwood

See renowned Israeli luthier (violin maker) Amnon Weinstein’s workshop come alive in more than 30 large scale photographs by Daniel Levin. The first photographer to document Amnon’s workshop in Tel Aviv, Levin captures a one-of-a-kind collection of violins that survived the Holocaust and the artful process for restoring them. The photographer’s uncanny ability to celebrate both place and process through the beauty of light is nothing short of remarkable. • To view the exhibition, please make a reservation at www.ttti.org/violinsandhope.

Amnon Weinstein had a vision many years ago to restore violins that survived the concentration camps and ghettos of World War II, even when their owners often did not. His “Violins of Hope” project may be one of the most creative, effective, moving, and magnificent approaches to understanding the Holocaust and how one heals from such pain and loss. “Like a rich tapestry that keeps unfolding to reveal unexpected layers and designs, Levin’s book intertwines the stories behind the violins he photographed at Weinstein’s studio with important historical figures and events.” ~ Eve Glover, Jerusalem Post Magazine 10

Women played a vital role in the building of Israeli society. This lecture showcases the enormous contributions made by the artists Anna Ticho and Siona Taggar, and the architects Genia Averbuch and Elsa Gidoni, who shaped the emergence of Israeli culture, as well as contemporary feminist artists, such as Michal Na’ama, Andi Aronowitz, and Na’ama Golan. We will explore the Zionist promise of gender equality and the challenges of reinventing a modern, independent, Jewish state. Avi Rose, Ph.D. is an arts-based educator, psychologist, and Jewish/Israel studies lecturer. He is currently writing a book on the origins and development of the arts in Israeli society.

Image: © The Israel Museum Jerusalem by Elie Posner

The story of the artist Anna Ticho and her husband, Dr. Abraham Ticho, is a love story: their love for each other, and their love for Jerusalem – its people and its landscapes; her love of art and creation, and his dedication to the patients he cared for. From the 1920s – 1970s, their home was the unofficial cultural center and “salon” of Jerusalem’s artistic and intellectual communities. Join Timna Seligman, curator of Ticho House since 2009, as she takes us through the arched doorway of Ticho House. Meet the people who lived there and see how the house changed and developed from ophthalmological hospital to art museum. Learn about Anna’s artwork and her influence as a female artist at a time when there were few recognized women artists.

JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY AT THE MET: A Virtual Tour of Arts and Artifacts Sunday, December 12, 2021 @ 12:30 pm Virtual

Judaism and Christianity, sister religions which grew up side-by-side in the Roman Empire, often had to define themselves in opposition to each other. They shared the Bible as a basic text. They shared some religious practices, traditions, and even stories, but diverged over so much else.

12

Join Dr. Bar-Asher Siegal, author of two books on the subject, including Jewish-Christian Dialogues on Scripture, to explore the Jewish-Christian relationship through the rich collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will look at portrayals of women, the body, and wine in ancient works of art, and see how these relate to Jewish and Christian texts and practices.

The compositions are precisely correct and Rivnay succeeds in his efforts to find order in abstraction. Shony Rivnay is an interdisciplinary Israeli-American artist based in Tel Aviv, Israel. He works in various media including painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. He has exhibited solo shows in numerous locations around the globe including Berlin, Germany, Venice, Tokyo, and South Korea as well as Tel Aviv and New York City. “If You Thirst for a Homeland and Seek Shelter in Its Bosom, Love It and Live in Its Mountains and Valleys, Its Flora and Fauna.” Flame-worked glass, felt, letter stencils, 2017

Israeli born glass artist Dafna Kaffeman has been challenging viewer’s notions about tolerance, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and morality in Europe, the United States, and Scandinavia. Her exquisitely crafted plant specimens, made in flame-worked glass from Israel’s natural world, are combined with embroidered texts. Handkerchiefs, often associated with mourning, are the backdrops for many of the glass plants. Inspired by nature, her pieces convey the complexities of life in Israel. Her work ignites an intellectual and emotional response. Kaffeman began her studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and received her BFA at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In 2002 she received her MFA from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. She now heads the glass department at Bezalel. Her work has been exhibited in the Corning Museum of Glass, the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Thursday, October 7, 2021 @ 1 pm

One of modern history’s unsung heroes is Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-born, American attorney/activist who lost 49 family members in the Holocaust. Lemkin coined the word “genocide” in 1944 and launched what would become a worldwide effort to define – and outlaw – these horrific crimes against humanity. BECOMING DR. RUTH by Mark St. Germain Directed by Mitchell Fields

Presented in partnership with InterPlay Jewish Theatre Stay Tuned! Date and Time to Be Announced Celebrity and pop icon Ruth Westheimer has seemingly lived her life out loud, but she has some compelling personal stories that still beg to be shared. Orphaned during Hitler’s rise to power, she developed an astonishing gift for reinventing herself, to literally become “Dr. Ruth.” Her unique blend of audacity, grit, enthusiasm, and humor shine through in this solo show. The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is a proud beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. 18
