Agricultural Biotechnology

Agricultural Biotechnology is a unique program that can be crafted to fit the requirements for any career in the life sciences. In this major, you will gain a strong grounding in the life and physical sciences, work closely with exceptional scientists, and gain valuable hands-on experience in research activities that employ state-of-the-art technologies. You will work one-on-one with an advisor to select coursework and research experiences in medical, plant, animal, microbial biotechnology or other areas. Additional coursework will be selected based on your personal career interests. Many of our graduates go on to careers in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, or veterinary science. Others have gone on to graduate school or careers in law, biofuel production, horticulture, or even culinary school. Many of our students elect to study in other countries to expand their college experience, to improve foreign language skills, and to prepare for the challenges of the global marketplace. Faculty and staff mentors dedicated to your overall well-being and success will guide your progress through every step of the program.

Agricultural Economics When you major in agricultural economics, you’ll learn marketing, management, leadership, and problem-solving skills— skills needed for careers in agribusiness and food industries, international marketing and trade, credit and finance, or farm management and production. Opportunities are also available in agricultural, environmental, and natural resource economics and policy. Graduates of Agricultural Economics are also wellprepared for advanced study in graduate school or professional study in business or law school. If you enjoy leading a team or group, making decisions, managing

money and financial resources, solving problems, managing and motivating people, or finding a more effective or efficient way to complete a project, you should consider a career in agricultural economics. http://www2.ca.uky.edu/agecon/ University of Kentucky- Agricultural Economics

Natural Resources & Environmental Science

Pre-Veterinary Program (Non-degree program)

This degree allows students to make a positive contribution to the quality of our environment by conserving air, water, soil, and biological resources while meeting society’s needs. A distinctive feature of the NRES program is that it tethers elements of science to policy. This is achieved in part through experiential learning, which includes a summer field camp course, field trips, and a problembased senior capstone course.

The NRES program has recently launched an education abroad version of the summer field camp taught in Costa Rica. The program also requires a pre-professional internship or research experience. NRES majors have completed internships in several foreign countries and with organizations such as the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, a DOE national laboratory, local nature preserves, consulting firms, and private corporations. Graduates of this program find a variety of challenging and rewarding career opportunities in federal, state, and local agencies and non-profit organizations and industry. Many students pursue graduate and professional studies after graduation.

Do you love animals and want to pursue a career as a veterinarian? Although there is not a degree in veterinary science at the undergraduate level, the largest pre-veterinary program in Kentucky is right here in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Although we do not have a veterinary school in Kentucky, the state does have contracts with the Auburn and Tuskegee Veterinary Schools in Alabama for Kentucky residents. Our pre-vet students have been accepted to a wide range of national and international veterinary schools as well. The majority of UK pre-veterinary students are working toward BS degrees in Animal Science, Agricultural Biotechnology, Biosystems Engineering, or Biology, but you can also pursue degrees in other majors and still qualify for admission to veterinary schools. After vet-school graduation, students have worked in private practice, gone on to specialties (such as large animal surgery), academics, veterinary service organizations, international veterinary work and many other exciting careers.

Engage your potential. One of our College’s initiatives is for each student to participate in at least one student development experience while they are a Wildcat. Which one is for you? Why not try all three?

Education Abroad Our students have studied biosystems engineering in Brazil, leadership development in Prague, environmental issues in Costa Rica, sustainability in Indonesia, volunteerism in Ghana, the dairy industry in Europe, and the equine industry in Scotland and Ireland, just to mention a few. Maybe you aren’t ready for travel abroad, so you might consider a jaunt to New York City for Fashion Week. No matter the focus, these trips allow our students to learn about other cultures and ways of life, about their fields of study, and make them more marketable after graduation.

Career and Service Learning

Being a world citizen brings big responsibilities, so service learning is a key component of an education at UK. We want to make sure our Wildcats know their full potential to become community leaders and give back to society. Service learning encompasses community service and development, volunteerism, career shadowing, and internships. Sometimes this service has a direct impact on one person or sometimes an entire community. Programs like UK DanceBlue, UK FUSION, the College’s Leadership certificate, and other activities through student organizations allow students to make a difference.

Study abroad opportunities with UK CAFE may be semester long, a summer excursion, or occur during university breaks. Our students often get credit for their trips and there are grants available from the Education Abroad office. http://www.uky.edu/international/ educationabroad UK DanceBlue: http://www.danceblue.org/

Undergraduate Research UK CAFE is one of the top agricultural research universities in the country. Our professors and researchers are having an impact on consumer trends, healthcare, alternative fuels, family dynamics, animal health and nutrition, economic stability, crop yield improvement, and sustainability measures across the board—just to name a few. We want our students to get involved in the research process. Research is more than just in a lab with chemicals and beakers. Research to us can take place in a lab, on the farm, in a field, a stall, a home, a community, or in a classroom. The bounds and potential for research and the impact it can have on others is exponential and is rewarding for the student as well. It is not uncommon for our students to present their research at national conferences and meetings, become a published researcher, and help improve their skill set for professional school, internships or a full-time job.

your future. Preparing for a career after UK is a goal that CAFE students and the College share. Career development is a process that continues through life—not just college. It’s a great time to graduate with one of our degree programs. A USDA Career Outlook study shows that one in four jobs in the United States has something to do with agriculture and related industries. Our students earn the opportunity to get coveted internships and land positions with top Fortune 500 companies, small and emerging business industries, school systems, healthcare providers, researchers, community development practitioners, the animal industry, top environmental firms, nonprofits, think tanks, business sector, policy, government agencies, the hospitality and entertainment industry, and nonprofits, just to name a few.

Part of the mission of the Ag & HES Alumni Association is to support students in a way that enhances their college experience. Activities that foster a relationship between students and alumni include Roundup, one of the nation’s largest single event alumni functions, or other events before Wildcat basketball and football games. These relationships grow over time and can lead to internships, jobs and professional relationships that last a lifetime. After graduation, it is important to join the Ag & HES Alumni Association so you can help other Wildcats experience the same opportunities. Utilizing the education you get in the classroom and combining it with opportunities outside of the classroom, UK CAFE students have the opportunity to grow and develop as leaders in their fields and to meet their career goals. How will you engAGe your future at UK?
