SEASON PREVIEW
The 2015-16 Jackrabbits seek to solidify their place among The Summit League elite Two titles and six tournament finishes in the top 10 for the 2014-15 South Dakota State women’s golf team was one of the best seasons in the program’s history, but finishing third at The Summit League Championship left the Jackrabbits with unfinished business. “The women’s team had an unbelievable year last year,” Casey VanDamme, Director of Golf, said. “We are looking to continue and amplify that progress this season.” For the first time in recent memory, SDSU’s roster could be described as a veteran group. The results of a Jackrabbit lineup that didn’t include a senior in 2014-15 is a seasoned squad that has been thrust into the competitive lineup since the beginning of their respective collegiate careers.
THE SENIOR CLASS Sydney MacDonald is the leader of a Jackrabbit squad. In three seasons, she has ravaged the SDSU record book and could finish her career as the most decorated women’s golfer in school history. The two-time Summit League selection became the first Jackrabbit to shoot below 70 for 18 holes last season and enters 2015-16 ranked seventh in career scoring average (79.84), first in career top-5 (7), top-10 (11) and top-25 finishes (17). She is tied for third in career rounds (88) and is the fourth Jackrabbit to place second at an event in Division I school history. MacDonald, a Calgary, Alberta native, led the Jacks in the spring semester with a 75.69 stroke average and three top-five finishes. Brianna Janu has improved her game tremendously, dropping her stroke average by more than two strokes (78.81). She gives the Jackrabbits depth that most teams in The Summit League lack. Janu played in all 11 events in 2014-15, posting a career-best and the ninth-best single-season scoring average and recorded three top-25 finishes. Back after redshirting is senior Myranda Dunmire. In 2013-14, the Palmdale, Calif., native saw action in nine events and collected a pair of top-20 finishes. Dunmire’s best finish came at the Kansas City Shootout when she tied for 17th and shot a seasonlow 237. THE JUNIOR CLASS Last season’s surprise was Hallie Getz. The junior dropped her stroke average by more than five strokes and set the single-season record with a team-leading 76.48 scoring average that also ranked seventh in The Summit League. The Pierre native recorded four top-10 finishes and finished fifth at the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational, shooting a 231 (76-79-76). The junior class will contribute heavily this season with Getz, Megan Mingo and Islamiah Fuad posititioning themselves as key players. Mingo posted the third-best single-season scor-
ing average with a 77.07 and ranked 13th in The Summit League. The Yankton native shot a 235 (77-82-76) at The Summit League Championship (4/20-4/22), tying for sixth, and finished in the top 25 in the final six events. Fuad started strong as a freshman but fought an injury during her sophomore campaign. The junior competed in nine events, missing the final two. She ranked 18th in The Summit League in scoring average and registered a top-5 and a top-10 finish.
THE SOPHOMORE CLASS Last season, Natcha Srimaneerungroj played in the fall as an individual before earning a spot in the starting lineup during the spring. The Bangkok, Thailand native posted the seventh-best single-season scoring average at SDSU with a 78.57 and ranked 20th in The Summit League. Srimaneerungroj collected three top-10 and four top-25 finishes and shot a 238 (80-77-81) at The Summit League Championship (4/20-4/22), tying for eighth.
THE FRESHMEN CLASS Freshman Elle Carlson adds depth to this year’s team as well as ensuring a bright future for SDSU golf. Carlson, from Sioux Falls, is a two-time Class AA state individual medalist and all-tournament honoree. She helped O’Gorman win its fifth state title in 2015 and finished fifth, shooting a 163 (82-81). Carlson also finished sixth at the 52nd South Dakota Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship.
THE SCHEDULE The Jackrabbits are ready for a 2015-16 schedule against the strongest competition the program has ever faced. “I am looking forward to seeing how we continue to grow as a program with this scheduel,” Van-

Damme said. “The ladies will have great opportunities to compte against great competition this spring.” The Jackrabbits open the spring season at the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon Feb. 22-24. In March, SDSU returns to the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona March 5-6, hosts the seventh annual Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nev., and makes its third trip to the Lady Thunderbird Invitational March 10-11 in Southern Utah. The Kansas City Shootout hosted by UMKC April 4-5 is the final regular-season event for the Jackrabbits before the pursuit of the Summit League Championship title happens at ArborLinks Golf Club in Nebraska City, Neb., April 18-20. The Jackrabbits seek a spot in the NCAA Championship field, held in early June.

Director of Golf - Casey VanDamme, Second Year
Immediate impact. Those two words could describe Casey VanDamme’s first season as South Dakota State Director of Golf. Under his guidance, the Jackrabbit women’s golf team won a pair of tournaments and broke school records for single-season scoring average and lowest 18hole, 36-hole and 54-hole scores in a single season. Its scoring average was more than 10 strokes better than the previous record. Individually, SDSU, broke eight single-season marks with senior Sydney McDonald setting seven and three players finished in the top three in single-season scoring average, led by junior Hallie Getz’s 76.48. All told, seven of eight Jackrabbits dropped two-ormore strokes from their 2013-14 average. VanDamme, who is SDSU’s second full-time golf coach, spent five seasons at Tennessee as Director of Instruction/Player Development beginning in 2009. During his tenure, Tennessee equaled its best postseason stretch in school history with five trips to the NCAA Championship regionals, advancing to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 NCAA Championships. Prior to coaching the Vols, VanDamme learned the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. He spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in Palm Springs,
Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest master instructor in school history. VanDamme has worked with PGA Tour players, including as an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship. He began his collegiate golf career at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. VanDamme started his tenure under McLean in 1998 while still playing collegiately. He also played professionally on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour in 2003-04.

From 2006 to 2009, VanDamme served as athletic director at Mid Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., also working summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Gladstone, Mich. He also served in 2008 as head golf professional at LochenHeath Golf Club in Traverse City. VanDamme and his wife, the former Jill Gobert, are natives of Perkins, Mich., and are the parents of daughters, Madelyn and Claire, and son, Andrew.

Assistant Coach -David Ellis, First Year
After spending two seasons out of the Midwest, Dave Ellis returns as assistant golf coach at South Dakota State. “I am extremely excited to announce Dave Ellis as our assistant golf coach,” VanDamme said. “Dave coached a top-10 team and assisted one of the best coaches in the country at Central Florida. In addition to his experience coaching at the highest level, Dave understands the balance for today’s student-athletes and will serve as a great mentor/role model for them.” Ellis, who spent two seasons at UCF as the men’s golf assistant, helped lead the Knights to
a No. 6 final Golfstat ranking in 2013-14, a runner-up finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship, a spot in the NCAA regional, and a guided a student-athlete to the 2014 national championship. This past season, Ellis and UCF finish third at the conference championship and won the FAU Slomin Autism Invite. Additionally, he also coached four student-athletes playing professionally on the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour Canada. A former standout at Michigan State, Ellis was a three-time Spartans team captain and played in three Big Ten Championships, finishing in the top 20 in 2012. Academically, he was a Cleveland Golf/Srixon AllAmerica Scholar, four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and four-time All-Big Ten Academic selection. He was honored with the Spartans’ most prestigious accolade—The President’s Award—honoring the MSU graduating senior with the highest GPA. 4
Playing the junior circuit, Ellis won the 2007 Michigan Junior Amateur and was the 2008 MHSAA Division I Upper Peninsula individual champion. In addition to his father Dean, SDSU assistant coach, Ellis’ twin brother, Daniel, is assistant golf coach at Michigan State.

Assistant Coach - Dean Ellis, Second Year
Dean Ellis, who spent 20 years as the Northern Michigan head golf coach, joined the South Dakota State golf program as assistant coach in 2014. Ellis, who was named the head golf coach at Northern Michigan in 1993, led NMU to the 2014 NCAA Regionals, where it placed 14th, after finishing eighth at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf (GLIAC) Championships. Additionally, he guided the Wildcats to the 1999 NCAA Division II Tournament. While at Northern Michigan, Ellis served as the Golf Association of Michigan Governor, on the NCAA Division II, District IV Golf Regional Advisory Committees and organized and administrated the 1999 and 2010 GLIAC Golf Championships. In 2011-12, Ellis was the lead instructor at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa where he provided individual and group lessons with use of JC-Video and Foresight GC2. He was also the head golf professional at the Wawonowin Country Club in Ishpeming, Mich., in 1991, winning the club championship in 1995. Addition-
ally, Ellis won the Upper Peninsula men’s amateur championship in 1981. Ellis was also the men’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan beginning in 1986-87. He posted a 369-303 record, becoming the winningest coach in program history in 2005. Ellis stepped down as head coach in 2010 after 24 years. Under Ellis’ leadership, the Wildcats made 13 appearances in the GLIAC postseason tournament and won the 1999-2000 title. His 1993, 1999 and 2000 squads won GLIAC regular-

season titles and also qualified for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament. He had four 20-win seasons (1993, '94, '99, '00) and was selected 1993 GLIAC Coach of the Year. A native of Negaunee, Mich., where he was a standout athlete, Ellis earned three letters in basketball and four in golf at Southwest Missouri State University. He transferred to Northern Michigan where he completed work on his bachelor’s degree in 1983. Ellis and his wife, Lois, are the parents of David, SDSU assistant golf coach, and Daniel, Michigan State assistant golf coach.

Brookings Country Club Brookings Country Club, home of the South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf programs, has long been recognized as one of the region’s best courses. The 18-hole, par-72, 4,800-

yard course was designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz. It is characterized by bluegrass greens, which are lush and serene, fairways that are challenging yet uncrowded and a rolling terrain.
The Brookings Country Club sits on 167 acres 8 miles southwest of the SDSU campus. It has hosted numerous collegiate events and annually hosts U.S. amateur qualifying events.

The Jackrabbits golf team has won three North Central Conference titles in 1982, 1994 and 1995. In Division I, SDSU has twice been runner-up in the 2008 and 2010 Summit League Championships. Starting this fall, South Dakota State will be showcasing 50 Years of Women’s Athletics.
South Dakota State University athletics department is celebrating the rich and storied history of women’s athletics when it commemorates 50 Years of Women’s Athletics during the 2015-16 season. November 22, 1966, women’s varsity athletics at SDSU officially began with the Jackrabbit volleyball team defeating Sioux Falls, 2-0. Since then, South Dakota State has had 49 seasons of teams participating in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, NCAA Division II and now NCAA Division I.
Fifty years ago... ..with the absence of a budget, scholarship aid, uniforms, or facilities, three women’s intercollegiate athletic teams began competing for South Dakota State University. And a legacy was started. Today, the University boasts... ...11 women’s intercollegiate athletic teams made up of more than 200 female student-athletes all striving to build upon this legacy.

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university. As South Dakota's Morrill Act land-grant university, SDSU had a fall 2014 enrollment of 12,557 students from all 50 states and 79 countries. Approximately 67 percent of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 29 percent are from other states and 4 percent from other countries. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement. SDSU comprises Colleges of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, University College, Nursing, Pharmacy, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College and the Graduate School. The American Association of University Professors categorizes SDSU as a Category 1 or doctoral-level institution. Over the last five years, university research has yielded 245 invention disclosures, 65 patents filed, 9 patents issued and 35 license agreements executed through the Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization, resulting in more than $10 million in license revenue. SDSU Extension, with eight Regional Extension Centers across the state, is South Dakota’s source for objective, vetted and relevant new knowledge generated through research. Extension’s online learning portal, iGrow.org, served nearly 600,000 users with more than 925,000 page views last year.

STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit
There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY South Dakota State University.” The capital campaign began with a goal of $200 million, but far exceeded that to a total of more than $255 million with contributions from more than 23,000 donors. The most visible support for the campaign can be seen in several construction and renovation projects funded primarily by generous donors, all part of the largest campus building boom since the 1960s. The majority of the facilities enhance the university’s research capabilities and allow for new discoveries that drive technology-based economic development in South Dakota. In January 2014, Chicoine was presented with the 2013-14 Chief Executive Leadership Award by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VI. The award recognizes the leadership of a higher education chief executive officer who demonstrates the ability to create a vision and inspire others. Dr. Chicoine brought more than 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois to his role as president of SDSU. A nationally recognized economist, specializing in public finance, taxation, and rural economics, Chicoine served as an advisor to the Illinois General Assembly. His higher education administrative experience includes service as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Illinois. Chicoine received an M.S. in agricultural econcomics from the University of Delaware in 1971, and completed an M.A. in economics at Western Illinois University. In 1979, he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The president and his wife, Marcia, live in Woodbine Cottage on the SDSU campus.

David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., has served as the 19th president of South Dakota State University since Jan. 1, 2007, when he became the third alumnus to lead the state’s largest institution of higher education. President Chicoine, who graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in agribusiness, also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Economics. President Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, including serving on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. Chicoine also chaired the President’s Council for The Summit League—SDSU’s conference home for 18 of its 21 varsity sports—during the 2011-12 academic year. Previously, he served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine years of his 11-year term. In the spring of 2013, Chicoine and his executive team rolled out IMPACT 2018: A Strategic Vision for South Dakota State University. The five-year plan features four main goals: academic excellence, research and innovation, outreach and becoming a high-performing University. To support the strategic plan, the SDSU Foundation in 2008 launched an aggressive comprehensive fund-raising effort—“It Starts with State: A Campaign for

Additionally, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes. Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 academic year, and was surpassed again during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $603,000 in April 2015. On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, as well as other recent improvements to the home of Jackrabbit baseball. More recently, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was completed in the fall of 2014. The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country, as well as expanded facilities for sports medicine and strength and conditioning. In addition, work is under way for the construction of the $65 million Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which will serve as the new home of Jackrabbit football. The 19,000-seat stadium is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbit athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, Jackrabbit athletics has continually made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in
reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 22 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy four times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 201213 academic years, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all six years in the league (2008-13). In January of 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU Athletics. Learfield Sports directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights.

Costello also played a lead role in the restructuring of the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction, which resulted in an increase of over 500 percent of total dollars raised and negotiated the department’s ten year, multi-million dollar agreement with Learfield Sports. Before joining the Jackrabbits, Costello worked in a variety of roles for the Northern Iowa Athletic Department in his eight years on staff. From July 2008 until the end of his tenure at UNI, he served as the associate athletic director for external relations and from 2005-08, Costello served as the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions. A native of Fairbank, Iowa, Costello graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport science in 1998. While at Loras, he also played for the Duhawk men’s basketball team. Costello completed his master’s degree from Western Illinois University in sport management in 2002 and earning a promotion to director of athletic marketing and promotions in January 2003. Leon and his wife, Heather, live in Brookings with their daughter, Cailin, and sons, Michael and Griffin.
Leon Costello brought his comprehensive background in athletic marketing and administration from the University of Northern Iowa to the South Dakota State athletic staff in March 2010 as the senior associate athletic director for external affairs. He was promoted to Deputy Director of Athletics in July 2014. In his role as a deputy director, Costello oversees the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and directs the implementation of the five-year athletic department strategic plan. To date, he worked on all facets of the SanfordJackrabbit Athletic Complex and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium; including planning, design, fundraising and premium seating sales. Costello also manages the athletic marketing, broadcast services, development, sports information and ticket operations in the athletic department, and serves as the department liaison for Under Armour and Jackrabbit Sports Properties, a division of Learfield Sports. Additionally, he is the sport supervisor for the Jackrabbits volleyball, men’s basketball and wrestling teams. In his time at SDSU Costello led the development and implementation of plans that resulted in record revenues, with significant increases in ticket sales, annual giving and sponsorships. On the fundraising front, he assisted in raising

Kathy Heylens became the institution’s first fulltime Compliance Coordinator in 1990 and continues those duties as the senior associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman’s administrator. Heylens’ responsibilities include the daily oversight and function of the athletics department NCAA compliance efforts, including review of all eligibility and financial aid matters for 21 varsity teams and approximately 525 student-athletes. Heylens is also responsible for many of the athletics department’s student service initiatives. Heylens is also a Title IX/EEO Deputy Coordinator and responds to and investigates complaints related to Title IX or Equal Opportunity. In addition to her day-to-day duties, Heylens serves on the Behavior Intervention Team, Performance Task Force, Choices and Prevention Committee, Diversity Committee, Intercollegiate Athletics Board and Compliance Team. A Watertown, native, Kathy and her husband, Bill, live in Volga and have two grown children.
Brian Brunner joined the Jackrabbits athletics staff in June 2014, as the assistant athletic director for annual giving, where he oversees the dayto-day operations of the Jackrabbit Club directs all annual solicitation efforts and is the men’s and women’s golf teams’ supervisor. Brunner came to SDSU after spending four years in various roles at Central Michigan University. A former CMU student-athlete, he joined the Chippewa athletics department as its assistant director of the Chippewa Athletic Fund in 2010 before earning a promotion to Chippewa Athletic Fund director in 2013, where he oversaw its annual fundraising efforts. He also managed the Chippewa Club, 1100 Club and Chippewa Champions programs, the Chippewa Challenge Golf Outing and provided oversight for all annual fundraising campaigns. During his time with the Chippewa Athletic Fund, Brunner played a key role in two, record-setting million-dollar-plus annual fundraising campaigns. During his CMU football career, Brunner appeared in 21 games at quarterback and served as a 2008 team captain. He earned Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week honors three times, earning an ESPN Helmet Sticker for his performance against Western Michigan in 2008. He also was named a 2008 National Strength and Conditioning All-American. Brunner played internationally for the Schwaebisch Hall Unicorns of the German Football League and compiled a blog for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called “Playing for Schnitzel” detailing his time overseas. Brunner earned his Bachelor of Science degree in journalism with minors in English and sport studies from Central Michigan in 2009, and a Master of Science in administration with a concentration in public administration from CMU in 2014. Brunner lives in Brookings with his wife, Melanie.

Each year, approximately 3,000 student-athletes continue to raise the bar and help The Summit League reach exceptional success and development. Within the past five years alone, The Summit League has produced six NCAA Champions, accounting for more than half of its all-time total. That level of success also carries into the classroom. In 2014-15, The Summit League ranked first for NCAA Graduation Success Rate in women’s basketball and second in baseball while setting records for NCAA Public Recognition awards and perfect Academic Progress Rate scores. Those achievements came on the heels of recent prestigious individual academic honors such as the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete of the Years and Capital One Academic All-America of the Year awarded to Summit League student-athletes. The Summit League also produces the highest quality in competition as evidenced by representation in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and Professional Golf Association (PGA) in 2015.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE
• The Summit League set all-time highs in 2014-15 with 23 teams recording perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and 25 teams publicly recognized for posting multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. A total of nine Academic All-Americans and 19 Academic All-District honorees hailed from The Summit League last season. • Summit League women’s basketball led all Division I leagues in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate measure while baseball placed second. • Attendance at The Summit League Basketball Championships smashed 11 records, including new standards for both the men’s and women’s tournaments and the overall combined total. • Six Summit League teams attained national rankings in their respective sports last season, led by North Dakota State’s softball team, which ended the year in the Top 25. • Western Illinois’ Ashley Luke was named the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for women’s basketball, making her the league’s first female student-athlete to receive the honor.
HISTORY Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League recorded several transcendent moments that resonate on the national stage. While known as the Mid-Continent Conference, the league’s first two decades produced a pair of appearances in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s “Sweet 16” and the Women’s College World Series as well as three individual NCAA Track and Field Champions. Oral Roberts gave The Summit League its initial baseball regional crown and Super Regional appearance in 2006 and three years later, North Dakota State became the league’s first softball team to achieve the same feat. The 2008-09 season also saw South Dakota State’s women’s basketball team carry a national ranking throughout a majority of the year and cap its season with an NCAA Tournament first round victory. In 2014, North Dakota State gained the national spotlight with a victory in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Round of 64. Last season, North Dakota State finished in the national Top 25 softball rankings, one of six teams to achieve a national ranking in their respective sport during 2014-15. Throughout its history, The Summit League has produced 10 NCAA Championships, three Olympic medalists and numerous All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving and cross country. Several professional athletes and draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first round picks, a pair of NBA first round choices, and two WNBA selections. In addition, Summit Leaguers compete in the MLS, and on the PGA and LPGA Tours. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a twotime all-star during his professional career. To coincide with The Summit League’s 30th Anniversary Season in 201112, the league released a list of its Top 30 Distinguished Contributors from the Division I era as selected by a panel of voters from member schools and the media. Four individual NCAA champions and three Olympic medalists along with four NBA players and two World Series Champions headlined The Summit League’s list of top student-athletes, coaches and administrators that was the jewel of the anniversary celebration.
