More music and fun needed for Newbury Carnival Parade Newbury Carnival now has over thirty exciting entries from local clubs, groups, charities, businesses and schools joining Newbury Carnival Parade. The Parade will leave Pound Street at 2pm and will wind through Bartholomew Street and Northbrook Street to the Clock Tower. Project Manager Ruth Walker said, “We are well over half way there already which is fabulous, but we are keen to welcome even more groups to join us. We would particularly welcome anything musical for the parade, such as marching bands or a walking choir, as music is always a special feature of Newbury Carnival Parade; as is anything that is fun or completely different of course!”.

Local Group PALS who are thrilled to be taking part for 2017

Recent entries include PALS (Partners for Active Leisure), Whitelands Park Primary School and Newbury Royal British Legion. Helen Randall of PALS said, “The children are really excited about

There will also be a Carnival Fete in Victoria Park with stalls, entertainment, small rides, giant inflatable slide, music, dancing and loads of other fun for all the family. Charities and local community groups may book to have a small stall free of charge, while there is still space available.

update. . . Last month I talked about some of our plans for the new-look Thatcham Vision and I’m very glad to say that things are moving on very well. Working closely with Thatcham Town Council and other local groups, we are currently putting together an organisation that will be able to provide support and practical services to voluntary clubs and societies in and around the town. These groups help to hold our community together by providing all sorts of activities for people of all ages, but sometimes they need help to grow and sustain themselves, so we aim to help with useful things like charitable status, guidance for funding applications, webpages, marketing, insurance and whatever else they might need to be a success. If you are involved in a group that would be interested in joining us, then get in touch. It’s June so that means it time for the annual Thatcham Family Fun Day. Come along to Henwick Worthy Sports Ground on Sunday 25th, 11am-4pm, and join in the fun. Thatcham Vision volunteers from our Community Safety Action Group will be there again supporting Thames Valley Police, so come and say hello. From all the volunteers in Thatcham Vision, have a fantastic summer and let’s hope for good weather! st By David Conque

Thatcham Vision is calling for more volunteers to help with community projects. For more information www.thatchamvision.net and residents are encouraged to follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Police Advice Protecting your mobile phone against theft Technology is allowing us to do more and more things through our phones as a result, mobile phones can be a very tempting target for thieves, with the loss of a phone causing great inconvenience to the user.

There are some simple steps that you can take to protect your mobile phone: Use the security features provided requiring access control such as a unique code, tracing the location of your handset using a remote service, a function to display a home/lock screen message to someone who may find your handset to help you recover it and wiping data from, or locking your handset remotely. These features will only protect your mobile phone if you have them switched on.

Be aware of your surroundings, busy locations such as concert venues, shopping centres, and public transport. All are popular places for pickpockets. Know how to identify it when the phone is stolen - Knowing the IMEI will help the police and insurance companies identify your handset should it be stolen. You can find your handset’s IMEI by typing *#06# into the keypad or dialer of your handset or looking inside the battery or SIM card compartment of your handset.

COBCOE Connects is a unique new international online trade platform, which is specially designed for members of Chambers of Commerce, supporting the development of businesses. If you are looking for international markets, it really is a good time to get involved. We have not been vocal enough about what we do in the past because we quietly get on with business, but I think now, we should look to be encouraging more conversations between businesses into the West Berkshire region. Good for West Berks, good for the Thames Valley.

Another Thatcham Jewel is the building beside the A4, which was originally built in the early 14th century as a chapel for the borough of Thatcham. It was known as St Thomas’ Chapel. The chapel held services for over 250 years! After that time it appears to have been unused. So sadly the building fell into a state of disrepair.

Plays at Newbury Racecourse on July 22

First coming into the public consciousness as the vocalist on Clean Bandit's Grammy Award winning and #1 hit 'Rather Be'; pop sensation Jess Glynne has since become one of the biggest UK breakthrough acts of recent years. Her number-one charting debut album, 'I Cry When I Laugh', has turned double platinum in the UK, making it the highest selling debut album of the past year.

You’re back for the second year running playing at racecourses around the country, what has brought you back? I had a lot of fun last year firstly. Secondly, loving horses as much as I do I couldn’t say no. Your Autumn arena tour was a huge success, do the crowds at these differ from those at the racecourse? Every crowd has a different energy but they don't differ too much! The atmosphere at both types of shows was overwhelmingly amazing. As they are large scale outdoor summer events, do you approach them differently from the indoor shows? Our approach is the same for both indoor and outdoor events - the band and I love playing live and the crowds don't differ too much in size so it's great! You managed to go into the crowds at some events last year to watch the racing, did you place a cheeky bet and win? Yes I did, I sneaked out in into the crowd and put a bet on and came up with a winner but it wasn’t down to my knowing the form though. Just luck! Is it good to know that your music has such broad appeal when you consider the ages and demographic of your fanbase? I love the fact that the songs resonate and touch people, whatever their age or background!

It's going to be great fun playing Newbury Racecourse on July 22 after the races. I love outdoor shows and can't wait to share some summer evenings with my fans!

LA was all work no play. I had a lot of fun working with new people and making new music.

I used to love sports, I was in most of the teams at school and loved athletics. My dad always encouraged that.

How did you approach it this time round, is there more pressure for album no.2?

You’ve mentioned before you tried horse riding when you were younger, what was it about horses that you liked?

I have approached this record just as I approached the first, I think the pressure is just the same. I think if it ever eased off then that would mean I don't care. Are you able to tell us when we can expect to hear new music in the charts? No idea yet, you will have to wait and see. Hopefully not too long.

What have you got planned for the remainder of 2017? 2017 is going to be an exciting year. . . you’ll have to wait and see!

When you were at school, were you into music, what gave you the bug to want to be a singer and performer?

New album is still in the process of being made. Trying not to rush anything as I want it all to be perfect.

My parents always introduced me to new music from a young age and I was just obsessed with vocals and performing since I can remember. I think I always had it in me but it wasn't till I left school that I realised it could become a reality.

Must have been hard having to spend all that time in LA, what did you get up to between recording sessions?

Were you into sports at school as this summer certainly sees you in some interesting sporting grounds?

Is the new album finally delivered, how was the recording process?

I started riding when I was quite young, maybe about 7 or 8 with one of my really good friends and I just loved it ever since. Horses were always one of my favourite animals.

Tickets for both dates are on sale now and available at

Trooping the Colour Where does the tradition come from? The custom of Trooping the Colour dates back to the time of Charles II in the 17th century. Although I know about the parades which mark the Queen’s official birthday I have never really known what the phrase ‘Trooping the Colours’ actually means. In fact The Colours carry upon them all the battle honours of a Regiment and as such have major significance for each and every soldier serving in that Regiment. In olden days they were hung outside the Battalion or Regimental headquarters after a good day's battle, so The Colours identified their headquarters. They were carried into battle so that in the fog of war, if a soldier was lost, he knew to search for the colours to locate the rest of his Regiment. Hence each day The Colours were trooped

As the clock on the Horse Guards Building strikes 11am, the Royal Procession arrives and The Queen takes the Royal Salute.

in front of the soldiers to make sure that they would always recognise them. In London, the Foot Guards used to do this as part of their daily Guard Mounting on Horse Guards and the modern Trooping the Colour parade is along similar lines. The Grenadier Guards first began to mark The Sovereign’s Official Birthday under the reign of Charles ll in 1748. When George III became King in 1760, it was ordered that parades should mark the King's Birthday. With only a few breaks, most notably for the two World Wars, The trooping of the Colours has been an annual event since. The impressive ceremony is now held on the occasion of our own Queen's Official Birthday. The precise date varies but it takes place in June. It is carried out by her personal troops, the Household Division, on Horse Guards Parade, with the Queen herself attending and taking the salute.

The Queen used to ride her own horse, side saddle, wearing the uniform of the regiment whose colour was being trooped. Since 1987, she has attended in a carriage. Regiments take their turn for this honour in rotation depending on their operational commitments. Over 1000 officers and men, and 200 horses take part in the parade, together with 200 musicians from six bands and corps of drums. The parade route extends from Buckingham Palace along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and back again. As the clock on the Horse Guards Building strikes 11am, the Royal Procession arrives and The Queen takes the Royal Salute. The parade begins with the Inspection, The Queen driving slowly down the ranks of all six Guards and then past the Household Cavalry. After the event, the Royal Family gathers on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch an RAF flypast.

CATS

What is their correct diet? Cats and dog’s nutritional needs are very different, from each other and because feeding inappropriate diets can over a period of time increase the cats risk of developing many different health issues, it is important that the cat is fed the correct diet. So what is a ‘correct’ diet? Cats, unlike dogs are obligate carnivores whereas a dog as an omnivore is able to digest a varied diet. A cats health and wellbeing is based on it being fed a high protein meat based diet. Cat’s have a specific need for the amino acid called Taurine in their diet this is added to cat food but is not present in for example in fish purchased from the fish counter in the supermarkets.

l When

So why is Taurine so important? A taurine deficiency can lead to, heart disease, it can cause retinal degeneration and even infertility.

l A

So, our message to you is, “while it’s great to give your feline fresh fish as a treat it is not recommended as a replacement to proper specifically designed good quality cat food”. Here are a few fun cat facts: l It

is thought that cat’s eyes are up to 6 times more sensitive to intensive light than a human.

l A

cat’s vision is best at 2-5 metres when stalking fast moving prey.

If you would like to know more, then drop our Cockerpoo Racso an email at www.racso.co.uk/contact and he will pass your question onto Lady Lulu who will be only to pleased to help.

a cat waggles its bottom just before pouncing on prey, it’s to alter their view.

l A

cat’s sense of smell is linked to taste, hence why a cat always smells food before eating if they lose their sense of smell, may be due to an infection they may well lose their appetite and their scent marking behaviours will change.

cat’s sense of smell is very acute, they don’t like the smell of the chemicals in tap water. Fill a jug and leave on the side for several hours. l Cat’s

need to feel safe, if for example you present them with new food, they will check around their area before eating it, they may do this up to 5 times before deciding to eat the food.

l Take

a close look at your cat’s fur and see that a coating of fine hair is longer than the main coat. Their coat is very sensitive and this longer hair help detect wind direction when out hunting.

Wimbledon

Summer would not be the same without the Tennis Championships, let's hope we can leave the umbrella's at home this year!

History The oldest tennis tournament in the world and arguably the most famous Wimbledon began 125 years ago in 1877. There are four major annual tennis tournaments which are known as ‘Grand Slams’; Australian Open, Us Open and French Open but Wimbledon is the only one to still be played on grass, which is where the name lawn tennis originated. The All England Club (originally called the All England Croquet Club) when it opened in 1869 offered a new game of lawn tennis, which was an offshoot of the original indoor racquet sport known as ‘real tennis'. This grew in popularity and at the end of the nineteenth century, the club decided to provide tennis courts for their visitors.

On 14 April 1877 the Club introduced the first of a number of name changes to become the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club.

14

Unlike today, the first Wimbledon championships had one event, the Gentleman’s Singles. Women were not allowed to play. Twenty two male competitors enered and the champion was twenty seven year old Spencer William Gore, in front of a crowd of

It is estimated that 28,000 kilos of English strawberries and 7000 litres of cream are consumed each year!

200, who had paid a shilling apiece to attend. In 1884 the men’s doubles competition was introduced and the same year women were also invited to join the tournament. No tournaments were held at Wimbledon during 1915-1918 and 1940-1945 because of the First and Second World Wars, however the game continued to grow in popularity.

Trophies The Men's Single Champion receives a silver gilt cup engraved with the words 'The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion of the World' and inscribed with the name of winners dating back to 1877. In 2009, when there was no more room for the names of future Wimbledon Champions, the addition of a black plinth adorned with a silver band was incorporated so that more names could be commemorated. The ladies' singles winners the trophy is a sterling silver salver, known as the 'Rosewater Dish', which was first introduced in 1886.

Glamping Tips

Weather fact The coldest temperature ever recorded in summer in the UK is -5.6 C recorded on the 9 June 1955 in Dalwhinnie.

Here are four glamping tips to help you on your way!

1

Pack plenty of clothes

Even if you are going in the summer you will need to pack plenty of clothes. The children will be running around outside getting muddy and dusty. The hottest day of the year becomes cold once the sun disappears, so get that fire pit going and put on lots of layers to keep warm.

2

One pot cooking

Whilst you should take advantage of your wood-burning stove, remember that you are on holiday. We recommend you stick to one-pot cooking.

3

Get back to nature

It is so easy and enjoyable to get back to nature while you are living amongst it. From your tent you can explore the surrounding fields and woodlands and wonder at the simpler things in life. Take this opportunity to get children engaging with the world around them.

4

Marshmellows

Marshmallows are vital for a successful glamping trip, that fire pit isn’t just for telling spooky stories or singing songs - enjoy!

What is Glamping?

Glamping, also known as luxury camping or glamorous camping, is that escape you’ve been meaning to take. It’s that little break from the hustle and bustle. Take a moment by yourself in a secluded treehouse or be adventurous and daring, glamping is your chance to be free and escape the rigours of modern day life. Glamping is a way to connect with your surroundings without having to rough it. When you glamp, you can expect amazing views, unique structures and secluded landscapes while you relax in comfortable beds, take luxurious bubble baths, enjoy on-site spas or even escape to your private beach.

Why Glamping? With an endless variety of luxury camping sites all over the world and UK,

glamping is a trend that can appeal to virtually all types of travelers. Whether you fancy hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting, canoeing, animal watching and wine tasting are just a few of the activities you can participate in. In Norway you can find yurt-style accommodations situated in some of the best mountain biking terrain in the world. The United States offers luxury camping sites in some of the country's most breathtaking national parks. In the UK there are some fantastic glamping places to visit. Have a look online so you too can experience the wonderful outdoors this summer!

2. Try mixing trends for a look that’s completely your own. Gingham checks with cold shoulders and bright pink statement sleeves add a modern flare to this style staple.

Designing Politically This year, it isn't just the clothing making a statement. The political climate all over the world is shifting and you don't need to be a politician to make a stand. Among the many people using their voice and various creative outlets to fight for everything from women’s rights to diversity, are some of the world’s top fashion designers. Taking inspiration from the pink “pussy hats,” which became a symbol of unity at the Women's Marches around the world following the election of President Trump, Missoni sent models down the runway in their own version of the iconic hats. In an interview with Allure, hairstylist Anthony Turner stated that “this is a protest collection. . . We just want to celebrate femininity, individuality, and to celebrate the woman.”

Should designers use their influence to promote their own political agenda or should they stick to making dresses and coats?

Missoni wasn't the only fashion house to use the runway as their own private soap box. Prabal Gurung's finale had his models walking the runway to the sounds of Maya Angelou reciting her poem, “Phenomenal Woman.” Rebecca Minkoff also made a less than subtle political message, sending her models out to Milck and a seven-person harmony's performance of “Quiet,” the unofficial anthem of the Women's March. Nicholas K sent a call to action to the fashion crowd using black and gold berets channelling the Black Panthers. Erin Fetherston promoted unity as well, stating in her show notes, “We are all, foremost, citizens of the world, and we are stronger together.”

London has revamped a warm weather staple; the gingham check. From the slightly distressed cool-girl shapes at Toga, to the frilly flowing frocks at Molly Goddard, gingham is everywhere!

Pink is back in a major way. Scoring as one of the top 10 colours in Pantone's list for spring/summer 2017, Pink Yarrow was the top of the charts; however, everything from Magenta and Brink Pink to Fuchsia were also out in droves. In Paris, bright shades of pink dominated the runways. Fashion labels such as Valentino, HermĂŠs, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Ellery among many others, showcased these vibrant hues from head-to-toe. During New York Fashion Week, vibrant shades of pink were sprinkled throughout the collections of Michael Kors, Jeremy Scott and Cushnie et Ochs in the form of cocktail dresses, trench coats, trousers and even shoes. With so much runway love, there's no doubt that our favourite girly shade has grown up and gotten a serious fashion makeover! No longer just for the Elle Woods and Barbie Dolls of the world, pink is bright, cheerful, energetic, enigmatic and clearly taking charge!

To keep your look fresh and modern, take a cue from House of Holland, who not only mixed gingham prints, but also added ruffles for a high-fashion flare. Peter Pilotto also updated this checkered fashion classic with trendy silhouettes and bright patches.

Painted Pink

Lids

While it's lovely as blush and fantastic in a lipgloss, pink isn't the easiest shade to wear as eye makeup. If you apply it wrong, you risk looking sickly or just a bit strange. So how can you take this ultra-trendy shade and make it work?

We found lots of inspiration backstage at our favourite runway shows to turn this tricky hue into a beauty must! The easiest and most wearable look came from Wunderkind, who emphasized their models' eyes with a dash of neon pink eyeliner. The bright swipe stands out against an otherwise clean complexion. Not ready to take the pink plunge? Try swiping another neon shade, like orange, green or blue. At Cividini, models were decked out with stripes of fluro coral and a touch of copper glitter for festive eyes meant to be seen, while a cobalt shade at Victoria Beckham (the exact hue is part of Beckham's collection in collaboration with EsteĂŠ Lauder) and electric blue lids at Ports 1961 packed a punch. 19

The Fox and the Ghost King

Ian Mortimer

Michael Morpurgo

December 1348. With the country in the grip of the Black Death, brothers John and William fear that they will shortly die and go to Hell. As the end draws near, they are given an unexpected choice: either to go home and spend their last six days in their familiar world, or to search for salvation across the forthcoming centuries - living each one of their remaining days ninety-nine years after the last. John and William choose the future and find themselves in 1447, ignorant of almost everything going on around them.

In a cosy den under a garden shed lives a family of foxes. They love to watch football - all foxes do. But their favourite team keeps losing and losing, and it seems like things will never look up. That is, until Daddy Fox finds the ghost of a king, buried underneath a car park. A king who wishes only to be free. "Release me," says the Ghost King, "and I can do anything. Just tell me your greatest wish."

Based in our studio in Broadway House, we are currently broadcasting to Newbury and Thatcham – and to the world! – via our website and smartphone apps, 24/7.

The exciting news is that after a lot of hard work, the Kennet Radio team has won a coveted community radio licence to broadcast to Newbury and Thatcham on 106.7 FM as well. We are nearly there with the fundraising to buy our transmitter, so we should be on air by the summer.

We are not-for-profit, unlike our commercial counterparts or the BBC, and we are dependent on grants and donations as well as some advertising. Our low power transmitter means our coverage FM is very local.

Advertise with us! By broadcasting only to Newbury and Thatcham, the cost of advertising on Kennet Radio is a lot less than you might think. That means you can advertise your local business to a local audience, knowing that you’re not paying to advertise to listeners who are miles away. Kennet Radio only exists thanks to the dedication and commitment of its volunteers. So you've decided that you need a hearing aid. But which one? Obviously the first thing to do is talk to an audiologist. They will assess the nature of your hearing loss, its cause, and its severity. Here are some issues you might wish to discuss with them. Mel Harrison

Hear Hear If you have severe hearing loss, you may need a larger hearing aid.

Is your bra causing your pain? Apparently 70 - 80% of women are still wearing the wrong sized bra and it is actually putting your health at risk!

Small hearing aids are easily damaged by earwax or draining ear fluid, so may not be the best choice for you if you are prone to excessive build-up of earwax, or to ear infections. If you want to be able to reduce some types of background noise and boost certain sound frequencies some smaller hearing aids may not be suitable. If you use electronic devices like a mobile phone, mp3 player, or laptop that are capable of sending a wireless signal, then you may want a hearing aid that is wireless compatible.

I often see patients who's bras are too tight around the ribs, have little support at the front or the straps are too loose. This in the long term can lead to neck, shoulder and back pain as the unsupported weight is causing our shoulders to come forward and more rounded. Putting pressure on the muscles and nerves in the neck, causing nerve irritations, postural pain and headaches.

If cosmetic appearance is important, let your audiologist know. They can help narrow the choices to what will best suit both your hearing needs and aesthetics.

Surprisingly these little maladjustments put further pressure on our diaphragm (our breathing muscle) which in the long term (especially sedentary

Consider your dexterity. If you have arthritis, you may find it difficult to insert and remove smaller hearing aids. Larger ones are easier to handle.

lifestyles) affects the breathing and digestive mechanisms and cause problems such as heartburn. If this hasn't convinced you to get your bra size checked, then maybe the prospect of premature breast sagging will! So get fitted and learn what a supportive bra should feel like, so you can check regularly yourself. Remember straps loosen in the wash.

Although some hearing aids are available on the NHS, top of the range hearing aids can be very expensive. Most private health care plans don't cover them either, so your budget may be a factor in your decision.

Please note: I am currently on maternity leave.

Alcohol

Too much alcohol works towards reduces production of testosterone and could affect sperm count.

Tomatoes Such causes could be environmental or even health concerns. At times, it is the lifestyle habits which are to blame. As an example, if one uses a laptop for too long, the heat could affect sperm quality. In the same way, while bicycling has its own advantages, prolonged bicycling could heat up the testicles and affect sperm quality.

Consuming the right kind of a diet would again work towards ensuring a higher fertility. What you eat influences the hypothalamus, which is a part of the brain, and the same influences the reproductive system.

Dark chocolate is a rich source of the amino acid L-arginine which studies show can increase the volume of ejaculate and improve sperm count and motility. The darker the chocolate, the better

Local Buzz Gardener Fergus Green

June 21 the longest day of the year The extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

There's always something to be doing in the garden, whether it's pruning, tidying or sowing, here are my tips for June. Cutting back growth in hanging baskets can encourage new flowers and foliage and will revive the display. Make sure you that feed your baskets well after doing this. Continue to tie in and train new growth on climbing plants. Divide clumps of Bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flowers buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for over-wintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials.

Cut back hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms.

r e p p u S r e m m u A Retro S Preparation time 1-2 hours

Cooking time 30 mins to 1 hour

For the sauce 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion, chopped 1 tbsp curry powder 1 tbsp tomato purée 85ml/3fl oz red wine 150ml/1/4 pint water 1 bay leaf salt and freshly ground black pepper caster sugar 2 slices lemon squeeze of lemon juice 425ml/15fl oz good-quality mayonnaise 2 tbsp apricot purée (You can make your own by blending 4-5 ready-to-eat dried apricots with 3 tbsp water) 3 tbsp whipped cream

To serve 1 tbsp roughly chopped coriander Boiled rice

Method

1 2

Place the chicken into a large saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Cover with water and add the spring onions, garlic, salt and peppercorns.

3

bring to the boil uncovered and simmer for 30 minutes. Turn the chicken once during this time. Cover with the lid and turn off the heat. Leave for one hour. Remove the chicken, allow to cool completely, and then tear the chicken from the bones and chop into chunks.

For the sauce, heat the oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook gently for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add the curry powder and cook for a further two minutes, stirring well. Add the tomato purée, wine, water and bay leaf.

4 5 6

Bring the mixture to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then add the sugar, lemon slices and lemon juice, to taste. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered, for 5-10 minutes. Strain the sauce through a sieve and set aside to cool.

Once cold fold in the mayonnaise and apricot purée, to taste. Add more lemon juice if required and then finally fold in the whipped cream. Arrange the chicken on a large platter, pour the sauce over the top, sprinkle with the coriander and serve immediately, with rice or salad.

Fennel Blueberries Blueberries are native to North America, but are also grown commercially in the Americas and Europe. They are low in calories and incredibly healthy. Eating blueberries may benefit heart and brain health, as well as help regulate blood sugar levels.

Green Tea Green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet. It is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body. This includes improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer and many other incredible benefits. Green tea has powerful antioxidants that may protect against cancer. Multiple studies show that green tea drinkers have a lower risk of various types of cancer. The bioactive compounds in green tea can have various protective effects on neurons and may reduce the risk of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, the two most common neurodegenerative disorders.

Like Marmite, fennel is something that you either love or hate - it has a strong aniseed flavour. It is very popular in Italian cookery, and has a bulb-like shape that looks a little like a heavybottomed celery. Cooked, it's softer and more mellow. Cut into very thin slices for salads (a mandolin is good for this). Boil or steam (up to 20 minutes for a whole head, or up to 12 minutes for wedges). Roast (4050 minutes).

Often referred to as a superfood, blueberries are an excellent source of several vitamins, beneficial plant compounds and antioxidants.

ood FTrends

Dragon Fruit Some dragon fruits have red or yellow skin (which looks a little like a soft pineapple with spikes). The flavor is mildly sweet, like a blend of kiwifruit and pear, and it has a crunchy texture. It is easy to get to the fruit. Simply slice lengthwise and either scoop out the flesh, or quarter it and peel back the leathery skin. Eat only the white part with seeds, removing any residual pink parts, which are bitter. Rich in antioxidants, they contain vitamin C (equivalent to 10 percent of the daily value), polyunsaturated (good) fatty acids, and several B vitamins for carbohydrate metabolism, as well as carotene and protein.

Buckwheat Savoury yogurts Farewell strawberry, hello beetroot. A trend we’ve seen booming stateside is the rise of vegetable yogurts. Natural yogurt is infused using flavours of carrot, beetroot, sweet potato or tomato.

Energizing and nutritious, buckwheat is available throughout the year and can be served as an alternative to rice or made into porridge. While many people think that buckwheat is a cereal grain, it is actually a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb and sorrel making it a suitable substitute for grains for people who are sensitive to wheat or other grains that contain protein glutens. Buckwheat flowers are very fragrant and are attractive to bees that use them to produce a special, strongly flavored, dark honey.

What are Pension Freedoms and can they benefit me? What are they?

Introduced in 2015 pension freedoms allow people aged 55+ to access their ‘Defined Contribution’ or ‘Money Purchase’ pension fund as they wish. Money purchase pensions include most personal pensions and stakeholder pensions, including those arranged through your employer, where the pension you receive is related to the contributions you make. They do not include ‘Defined Benefit’ / “Final Salary” pensions, where the pension you receive is determined by your salary and length of service. The biggest change is to allow people aged 55+ to withdraw the whole of their pension fund as one lump sum. The 2015 rules will not only bring freedoms and choice to use your pension fund as you wish, but also the need for careful planning to ensure that you have sufficient income for the whole of your retirement.

Can I take it ALL?

You really can take it all, but this will almost certainly have (potentially expensive!) tax implications. Plus, you need to think about what you’re going to live on in retirement.

Lower taxation on death

Whilst you can now take your pension savings as cash in one go or as a series of lump sums, the first 25% will be tax-free but the remaining 75% will be subject to income tax. And, if you take your pension in the same tax year as you’ve received a salary then you could find yourself propelled into the next tax bracket with even more tax to pay.

If you die before age 75, any death benefits from your pension that you pass on to your dependant or other nominated beneficiary will be tax-free.

If you die age 75 or over:

If you’re considering taking your pension pot as cash use an online tax calculator to see how much the taxman will get. If you’re considering using your pension savings to redeem all or part of an existing mortgage or to clear some debts, then it is worth seeking financial advice to find the best solution for your circumstances

ο

Any income you pass on to your dependant or other nominated beneficiary will be taxable at their highest tax rate;

ο

Any lump sum you pass on to your dependant - or other nominated beneficiary - will be taxable at the beneficiary’s marginal tax rate.

What about taking an income?

You can opt for certainty and buy an annuity. Or you can move your pot into a product called a drawdown pension. This allows you to draw income from your pension fund whilst it remains invested. There will be no limits on the amount you can take as income from your invested funds. Drawdown income is subject to income tax. Don’t forget investment values can fall as well as rise.

So are “Pension Freedoms” right for me? The short answer is, “Maybe. . . but it depends” Everyone’s circumstances are different and while the ability to take the whole pension pot in one go looks attractive, there is a lot to consider and it might not be right for you. Its essential that you seek professional, independent advice before you make a decision that will impact on the rest of your life.

When producing videos for your business or blog it is a very easy to focus on the video quality, lighting, and composition while neglecting the quality of the audio.

Sound Advice microphone on your video recording device, be it a phone, tablet or video camera.

The quality and clarity of the audio in your video is actually more important than the visual quality. This may seem an illogical statement but studies have shown that if the video quality is high but the audio quality is low or average viewers will react negatively to the video content as a whole. People are far more forgiving of poorly shot video if the sound quality is good. I remember an occasion a few years ago when a historical drama series called Jamaica Inn was airing on a Sunday evening. Being a fan of historical dramas I eagerly tuned in to watch the first episode. The overall volume of the sound recording was very low and totally ruined my viewing experience. I didn’t actually watch any more of the episodes. How to achieve good audio quality in your videos. l

The most important piece of advice is not to use the on-board

l

Do not shoot video in a noisy environment. The microphone will pick up background noise which can be very distracting.

l

Avoid filming in windy conditions where the microphone will pick up wind noise.

l

Always use an offcamera microphone and place it as close to the subject as possible. Tie clip (lavaliere) microphones are very inexpensive and plug directly into your video recording device.

Following the advice above will ensure that your videos have good crisp audio to complement the high quality visuals.
