West Berkshire delivers pioneering travel app for parents and young people West Berkshire Council have supported the development of a pioneering smartphone app. In a joint venture with award-winning transport safety consultancy, Agilysis Ltd, West Berkshire Council have supported the development of a pioneering smartphone app that uses geolocation technology to give reassurance to parents/ guardians and security to children for their local unaccompanied journeys. In recent years, the Traffic and Road Safety team at West Berkshire Council have been considering the potential for developing technology solutions that

support parents and young people who want to confidently pursue independent and active travel, such as walking and cycling. The new RouteGuardapp will be available to download from Apple and Google Play stores. As the RouteGuardian, parents will be able to plan, monitor, and adjust routes and pre-defined zones encouraging mutual agreement with their child. Cheryl Evans, Senior Road Safety Officer at West Berkshire Council commented: "Year after year we hear young people say that they would love to travel independently by walking or cycling more. We know that encouraging them to

be active will give them a healthier life as an adult. But, as parents and guardians, we often face another concern - that if we allow our young people that level of freedom, we might be exposing them to other risks. So, we have developed a pioneering new app that helps families to plan travel together - providing reassurance for parents and young people alike." In order to use RouteGuard, the app requires parents and guardians to use a code which will only be issued by a registered school or local authority. This is to ensure that the app is only being used by legitimate guardians. It is free for all schools and local authorities to sign up, which can be done via the RouteGuard website www.routeguard.co.uk.

Bonfire There is nothing in law to say that people can’t have bonfires. However, what you are not entitled to do is cause a statutory nuisance. The council receives many domestic nuisance complaints every year, and smoke from bonfires is one of the most common complaints. Bonfires can be very annoying to neighbours and can give rise to a statutory nuisance if it is regular, prolonged or the materials being burned don’t lend themselves to a good ‘clean’ burn. The smoke, ash and smells may prevent your neighbours from enjoying their gardens, opening windows or hanging out washing. Smoke can also reduce visibility on roads if a bonfire is not properly controlled or the wind is strong in a particular direction. Advice if you do have a bonfire Bonfires can be dangerous as fire can 8

spread to fences or buildings, and can scorch trees and plants. Exploding bottles and cans are a hazard when rubbish is burned. Think carefully about the materials on it and where it is located. zzDo

not leave a fire unattended or smouldering. Douse it with water, if necessary, to ensure it is out. zzDo

not burn damp garden waste, as this produces thick smoke. Only burn dry material. zzDo

not burn any man-made material waste, such as plastics or rubber, as this may create heavy, toxic smoke. zzDo

not use accelerants eg old engine oil, methylated spirits or petrol to

light the fire or encourage it. zzWait

for suitable weather conditions. Still days which allow the smoke to rise straight up are preferable. zzDon't

light a bonfire when air pollution is high in your area. zzSpeak

to your neighbours beforehand to agree a suitable time to have the bonfire. zzChoose

the site for your bonfire carefully - away from trees, fences and, if possible, away from nearby homes. zzBurn

in small quantities, gradually building the fire to optimise the heat and the efficiency of the burn. This will also help reduce the amount of smoke. LOCAL BUZZ

Issues Smart City grant enables help for vulnerable adults Innovative real world trial will address issues of slips, trips and falls West Berkshire Council has awarded a local company a grant of £100k to help vulnerable people to stay independent and mobile. Berkshire-based Thingitude received the cash as part of the Thames Valley Berkshire Smart City Cluster project funding and will work with the Council's Public Health Team to deliver an innovative real world trial addressing the issues and impacts that slips, trips and falls have on the elderly, helping them to look after themselves better and providing valuable information to help with care planning. The trial will continue until February 2020 across West Berkshire in the homes of 30 volunteers identified as being at risk of falling. Thingitude will install several sensors and some 'smart' lighting in each home - the sensors will measure different risk factors related to falls, such as mobility and balance, room temperature, dehydration and activity levels, and will send data to the partners for analysis. Commenting on the initiative, Councillor Graham Bridgman, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Adult Social Care said: "We are proud to be involved in this Smart Cities Cluster Project as it gives us the opportunity to work directly with an innovative local business to improve services for our residents." "Preventing falls among our most vulnerable residents and, more widely, providing excellent adult social care are among our top priorities as a council and we are continually looking to improve this ground-breaking project will further that aim.

Transforming adult social care by sharing lives

Clockwise from Kit Malthouse MP, Rose a Shared Lives carer, Claire Hudson, Shared Lives scheme manager and Cllr Liz Fairhurst, Hampshire County Council discussing the Shared Lives Scheme.

You may not have heard of Shared Lives, but it’s a fantastic concept whereby people, who have a bit of space and time, are opening up their homes to care for a vulnerable adult – perhaps someone with a learning disability, mental health issues, or an older person and it has massive potential to transform adult social care by saving money. I’ve met carers on this scheme who’ve built friendships and networks with other carers and found it incredibly satisfying personally. Meanwhile the people being cared for become part of the family, receive more individual care and have better long-term outcomes. There are many thousands of Shared Lives carers across the country. In Hampshire, we have about 112 carers on the scheme supporting over 200 vulnerable people. I would love to see this really take off in our constituency and up and down the country. If we double or treble the number of Shared Lives carers, it will have a massive impact on adult social care. If you’re interested in becoming a carer or finding out more, check out my podcast (The Maltcast, available on iTunes and Spotify) where I talk to Claire, a scheme manager and Rose, a local carer.

Consulting on the canal The Kennet and Avon Canal is Newbury’s secret sanctuary. From the bustle of Northbrook Street, you almost might not notice it was there, but its presence underpins the history of the town and provides a peaceful escape for residents and visitors alike. At its commercial height, some two hundred years ago, it carried over 300,000 tons of cargo a year and Newbury was a busy inland port. Today the canal is experiencing a resurgence as one of southern England’s most important leisure facilities enjoyed by hundreds of people every week. Around 70 years ago the future for the canal was bleak. The last through journey by a narrowboat was in 1951 and it was falling into disrepair. It was only saved thanks to the vision of a group of enthusiasts led by the legendary John Gould MBE, who campaigned to prevent its formal closure. This led to the formation of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust which continued to campaign but also got on with the job, recruiting an army of passionate volunteers to restore the waterway which reopened three decades later in 1990. John’s statue can be found at Newbury Library, truly one of Newbury’s and the Canal’s heroes. One of my proudest achievements as Minister was to oversee the transfer of our inland waterways from the public sector to the Canal & River Trust, now one of the largest charities in the country. Last month Newbury Town Council held a public consultation on its guidelines for any future developments along the Kennet & Avon Canal. So many groups have a vested interest, from walkers and cyclists through to boat-builders and business, and it is vital that this cross-community collaboration continues so that future generations can continue to enjoy this beautiful and historic waterway. Baked Potatoes

Don’t forget that children get really excited about bonfire night, and will be eager to help you prepare for a party. Keep them busy by getting them to help build a den, make toffee apples, or even collecting wood for the fire.

Can you beat a good old baked potato! Traditionally done in the bonfire embers but much safer and cleaner in the oven or the microwave.

Hot chocolate Warm drinks such as hot chocolate and mulled cider can also keep people from feeling the cold too much, make up big batches in advance and then keep warm on the hob.

FOOD

Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night, and many other seasonal and celebratory occasions, wouldn't be the same without the right food and drink - usually something warming for a cold night. The Classic Toffee Apple Can you beat the classic toffee apple? Hot and sticky on the outside, cool, soft and sweet on the inside. If you are planning any sort of party around bonfire night this cheap, easy and delicious treat is a must!

Sweet treats for the children hitting the spot perfectly.

Mulled Wine For fantastic mulled wine you will want to start with one of our great wine kits, such as the 30 bottle Magnum Red Wine kit which makes 30 bottles of superb wine in less than 14 days. To turn this into mulled wine you can either gather all the various cloves and spices from the supermarket and blend together into the right proportions, or you could just save time for the cooking and party by using easy to use sachets this tasty and warming drink will keep all the grown ups happy.

Marshmallow toasting If you are building a fire, why not create a marshmallow toasting station. Provide long sticks, a big bowl of fluffy marshmallows, some biscuits and chocolate and people can help themselves.

Roast Chestnuts

Parsnip Crisps

Toffee apples on bonfire night are a given! 12

Delicious, dead easy and making the most of a seasonal vegetable. A great snack that everybody can enjoy.

Another one which might be done in the bonfire, but the oven is better. Chestnuts come into the shops just in time for Bonfire Night, and a bag of roast chestnuts is a great hand-warmer.

The Greyhound

T

hai is one of the most delightful foods in the world, a cuisine that in the space of a mouthful can seduce and ignite. It’s the combination of flavours and textures, both bold and subtle, that sends the taste buds into swoons of rapturous adoration. The essence of Thai food is all about balance – achieving the perfect harmony between sweet, sour, hot and salty.

So, how far do you have to travel to find an authentic Thai food locally? Well, the answer is … not too far! The Greyhound Inn, a unique country pub specialises in authentic Thai food in the village of Broughton. Broughton lies in the heart of the Hampshire countryside, midway between the medieval cities of Salisbury to the west and Winchester to the east, and between the old market towns of Andover to the north and Romsey to the south. Attracting customers from nearby towns such as Newbury, Hungerford, Stockbridge and Basingstoke, Australian owner Matt Nicol’s vision has superseded expectations.

The Greyhound’s boasts on preparing quality food from scratch and it is all cooked on the premises and there is no limitation on creating your own dish. You can actually see the chefs preparing your food through a large glass wall. Another option would be to request a chef's table. This is a table reserved for

VIPs and special guests, where a themed tasting menu may be prepared and served by the head chef. With vegans and vegetarians set to make up a quarter of the British population by 2025, The Greyhound is certainly keeping up with the trend and has an incredible menu to satisfy the market craze by offering exquisite gluten free and vegan options. My starter was Goong Hoompa, deliciously marinated king prawns wrapped in crispy pastry with a sweet chili dip and to follow, Goong Gra-ta, wok fried king prawns with lemongrass, coriander, peppers, onions and mushrooms served on a sizzling platter with a side of coconut rice. The aromatic combination of all the spices enhanced the appetite even further. Finally, my tastebuds were then tempted by the pudding menu and I experienced

authentic the sweet combination of sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb swirl ice cream. A real treat! The pub is open all day and has a capacity to welcome parties of 120 people. However, if you are looking to celebrate in style, you must check out the Racing Room, a private dining room with seating capacity for 25 people. For the sport fanatic, there is a separate room with a large screen showing most of national and international sports’ events, however this room isn’t connected to the restaurant which allows customers to feel satisfied with their chosen experience. Although The Greyhound is open most days between 12pm and 11pm, note that serving times are between 12pm-3pm and 6pm-9.30pm. The same applies when ordering a take-away. Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM

How much

protein do we need?

There has been a history of enthusiasm for protein in the nutrition world. A century ago, the protein recommendations were more than twice what we know them to be today. This enthusiasm peaked in the 1950s with the United Nations identifying protein deficiency as a serious, widespread, global problem. According to them, there was a worldwide protein gap that needed to be filled. It started in the 1930s with a disease of malnutrition called kwashiorkor, which was assumed to be caused by protein deficiency. The disease was famously discovered by Dr. Cicely Williams, who then spent the latter part of her life debunking the very condition she had first described,

and it turns out the actual cause of kwashiorkor is unknown ( but fecal transplant studies suggest changes in gut flora may be a causal factor). The field of nutrition had got it wrong.

need about 30 daily grams of protein, which is 0.66 grams per kilogram, but we round it up to 0.8 or 0.9 grams because everyone’s different and we want to capture most of the bell curve.

Science did eventually prevail, and in the 1970s protein requirements were recalculated. Infant protein requirements, for instance, went from a recommended 13 percent of daily calories down to 10 percent, 7 percent, and then down to 5 percent. However, there are still people obsessing about protein. For example, those promoting Paleolithic diets try to make the case for protein from an evolutionary perspective. Adults require no more than 0.8 or 0.9 grams of protein per healthy kilogram of body weight per day. On average, they probably only

People may actually be more likely to suffer from protein excess than protein deficiency. This may include disorders of bone and calcium balance, disorders of kidney function, increased cancer risk, disorders of the liver and worsening of coronary artery disease. Considering all of these potential disease risks, there is currently no reasonable scientific basis to recommend protein consumption above the current recommended daily allowance.

Night

Party Nowadays, many parties include adults as well as their children, which means the hosts have to cater and entertain not only other adults but their offspring. While it's great to be able to spend even more time with our kids and our friends' kids at family parties, more bodies (regardless of size) mean more work. And when you have to cater to different interest levels and food preferences, a "simple" gathering keeps getting less straightforward. You could make your affair "adults only". But sometimes it's fun to include the whole family. So your job is to plan a soiree where people of all ages will be comfortable, entertained, and safe. It's easier than you might think. Here are a few tips

Top Tips

1

for safe, fun and successful family parties. Preparing Your Kids and Your Home for Family Parties Most adult parties are boring for kids. No clowns. No balloons. zz

Assure a Safe Entry

zz

Make sure your house number is visible. Clear sidewalks and porches of kids' toys or anything someone might trip over.

zz

Make sure the entry is well lit.

zz

Include Damage Control in Your Party Planning

zz

Move away precious ornaments. Put breakables on higher shelves. Anything that can be bumped off or into and broken will be.

zz

Move delicate possessions to higher ground until the pint-size stampede is over.

2 3 4

Create a children haven

Set aside a study or den as a dedicated play area for children. Equip it with a few toys, videos, computer games, coloring books, and crayons; anything that will entertain them safely.

Provide a separate teens-only space away from

the small children to make grumpy teens smile.

Find a babysitter for your party. Your neighborhood

high schooler could probably entertain the mini-masses nicely for a few hours - at a bargain rate.

If you absolutely cannot find a babysitter, suggest that parents take turns supervising the children tables.

I have been passionate about water quality for most of my life. I started Basingstoke Softeners 30 years ago and all of us in the business are proud to be recognised as a foremost provider of water treatment products in this area. As a local family business we are proud of our reputation. Water pollution is now headline news but we have been addressing it for years. Our small yet efficient water softeners require no electricity. In households where they are fitted they lead to a reduction of over 50% in the use of phosphates, detergents and chemical cleaners. In addition limescale around heat exchangers reduces the efficiency of heat transfer and consequently more energy is required. We guarantee that our water softeners will remove limescale from heat exchangers thus improving efficiency, cutting CO2 emissions AND saving money. Appliances and showers are known to last longer with soft water so the need for replacement is less frequent. There is no need to use descalers and harsh chemical cleaners when you have soft water in your home and products such as shower gels, shampoos and washing detergents are very effective in much smaller quantities. The result is a

significant reduction in chemicals going down the drain.

need to buy plastic bottles in order to drink clean water.

As an added bonus surfaces stay spotlessly clean as there is no scale and scum build up, so much less time (and effort) is needed to keep your kitchen and bathroom sparkling.

Please get in touch if you care about pollution in our rivers and oceans; want to improve water quality in your home or would just like more information.

While it is true that you have to put salt in your water softener, salt is much less harmful to the environment than most chemical products and as far back as the 80’s Ecover, a leading campaigner and producer of eco-friendly products, recognised the environmental benefits of domestic water softeners.

We love what we do and love to talk about it. We look forward to hearing from you. Call us now on for advice or a no-obligation quotation.

Softened water is gentle and many of our customers report an improvement in skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis after we install their softener. Our large range of drinking water filtration products can purify your drinking water, removing chlorine, pesticides, microplastics and some will even remove heavy metals and organic compounds to give you the purest possible drinking water. There is no

Bonf

The celebrations and the size of the bonfire varies from one community to the next. Lewes, in the South East of England, is famous for its Bonfire Night festivities and consistently attracts thousands of people each year to participate.

With Bonfire Night just around the corner, we thought parents might like a little recap on the history of this notorious British event, to answer questions of curious children.

Encourage your child to write a poem or short story about the Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire Night to reinforce their learning?

Guy Fawkes & the Gunpowder Plot In 1604, a group of English Catholics, led by Robert Catesby, made plans to assassinate the Protestant King James I. Catholics had been persecuted under Queen Elizabeth's 45-year rule and when she died in 1603, the Catholics had great hope that King James, whose wife was a Catholic, would be more accepting of their religion. Though this seemed to be the case at first, the strain of juggling various religious demands led to King James

24

expressing hostility for Catholicism during the Hampton Court Conference of January 1604.

By February, this hostility turned to detestation and any Catholics who refused to submit to authority or comply with regulations were fined, as had been the case under Elizabeth's rule. Though many Catholics accepted the reintroduction of fines, a group of men, including Guy Fawkes, decided violent action was necessary. Catesby and his group made plans to blow up the Houses of Parliament, with the King and Members of Parliament inside. Through a cellar belonging to the building next door, they planned to ignite 36 barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords. The plan was for Guy Fawkes to light the fuse during the State Opening of England's Parliament on 5 November 1605, and then make his escape to Europe.

Bonfire Night is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries.

Night

Competition

As the members of the group conspired to carry out their plan, some of the plotters became concerned about the number of innocent people, including Catholics, who may be hurt or even killed in the explosion.

Write a poem or a short story about Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire Night

On the night of 26 October Lord Monteagle received an anonymous letter, warning him to avoid the opening of Parliament. At around midnight on 4 November, a search of Westminster was ordered and Guy Fawkes was discovered in the cellar. His arrest was immediately issued and the plot was foiled.

That evening, bonfires were set alight in celebration of the safety of the King. In 1606, Parliament agreed to make 5 November a day of public thanksgiving, which is the reason we have celebrated Bonfire Night on this day ever since. During modern-day celebrations, fireworks are set off representing the unlit gunpowder, and effigies of Guy

• Text need to be between 50-70 words maximum Fawkes are placed on bonfires to commemorate the failure of their evil plot.

All you need to do ...

What a story! This is of course just a short summary of a much more complex event. Perhaps you and your children can carry out further research at your local library or online.

• Post your poem in on Facebook page using the hashtag #bonfirebuzz

The history of Bonfire Night will no doubt provide great stimulus for your child's writing.

Hairy Days Movember!

Let it Grow

As the colder mornings start to appear, it’s no wonder the phrase ‘a few extra layers’is not limited to that of clothes. That’s right, it’s not just the icy air that’s about to get a lot more bristly, but the faces of millions of men too. ‘Movember’, an annual campaign, combining both ‘moustache’ with ‘November’ is dedicated to battling and raising awareness about testicular cancer, prostate cancer, men’s mental health and suicide prevention. The campaign, initially ignited in Australia in 2003, designed to bring awareness and target both the mental and physical issues faced specifically by men is now something of a global movement. Every year, millions of men opt to grow out those facial locks as a symbol of their participation and commitment to the movement. However, whilst the act of growing out one’s moustache or beard alerts others to such participation, it can also serve to elucidate the union of men, an attempt to support each other and acknowledge the severity of both mental and physical illnesses that they face. For centuries, it was well engrained within the patriarchy, that men, supposedly formidable figures, are immune to hardships like mental health issues. Though by taking part in the movement, men together, revoke the stigma associated with male mental illness and the silence associated with male cancers. The act of growing out one’s facial hair

provides the perfect means by which men can instigate a conversation about their personal struggles, which have hitherto been shunned by typical notions of masculinity. Unfortunately, the statistics of those battling cancer are rising. Everyone is affected by cancer in some way, either by experiencing it personally or knowing someone who has battled cancer. However, within the fast-paced and chaotic environment of modern society, it can be easy to almost ignore the prevalence of such pressing issues, despite them being directly in front of us. For this reason alone, ‘Movember’ stands as a perfect reminder to check and assess one’s health, whether that be physical or mental. It is never too early or late in the year to make some changes and take control of one’s own physical and mental well-being. By standing together and taking part in ‘Movember’, collectively we stand a far better chance of battling against these solemn statistics!

04. Slow down

At 35mph you are twice as likely to kill a pedestrian as at 30mph.

oad safety advice

Roads are essential to our everyday lives. We all use them in some way, by driving, riding, walking or travelling as a passenger, and we depend on them to obtain goods passenger therefore depending on them.

05. Children

Children often act impulsively, take extra care outside schools, near buses and ice cream vans when they might be around.

Unfortunately, this comes at a price, which includes people being killed and injured. However, road deaths and injuries are not inevitable. The last few decades have demonstrated that effective and comprehensive road safety strategies can reduce the number of people killed or injured on the road, despite increasing traffic levels.

Nearly half of women in the UK have lost full bladder control By Theresa Fleetwood, Founder of Andresa Aesthetics

Over 40% of us are living with urinary incontinence, and that’s a conservative figure. We know how profoundly embarrassing, debilitating even, that living with this condition can be. Symptoms can range from embarrassing “Oops” moments when you laugh, cough, sneeze or just “want to go” but don’t get there in time, to complete incontinence with total reliance on pads. Social anxiety (or avoidance), depression and relationship breakdown are just some of the knock-on effects; we understand that it really isn’t possible to overestimate the devastating impact that such a condition can have on a person’s life. And one thing is almost a guarantee – it will get worse with age.

The Emsella could improve your quality of life in just three weeks. There is now, however, a non-invasive physiotherapy-style treatment program that can improve your quality of life in just six 30-minute sessions over three weeks. You remain fully-clothed throughout this medical-grade, comfortable treatment which is endorsed by gynaecologists worldwide and FDA-approved. And it has a success rate of over 95%, with urinary leakage often being completely resolved. During each 28-minute session, you remain seated on the Emsella chair whilst the muscles of the pelvic floor are stimulated by

High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to contract over 11,000 times, restoring neuromuscular control. Not only that, but the entire pelvic floor musculature is involved, not just the subset that can be exercised with voluntary contractions. This results in a powerful improvement in muscle tone with every session.

Benefits of Emsella

The results really are quite staggering. Here are what some of our ladies have said: This treatment is life changing! After just one week of two treatments I could feel the difference in terms of support in my pelvic area, and after the full six sessions in three weeks I am able to trampoline with my kids without having a small accident. It is so liberating! Carol

We recognise that cold-calling into a clinic that you don’t know, and talking about such a personal condition to people that you’ve never met can be overwhelming. We offer a call-back service whereby you can specify a date and time for a discussion with a specialist who has in-depth knowledge of all degrees of incontinence. We also offer a free-of-charge consultation service in a private suite, during which you get an opportunity to try out the treatment, and there is no obligation to proceed further. Our clinic is discreetly tucked away in rural Berkshire, and you can rest assured that you will be treated with the dignity and respect that you deserve.

BuzzConnect

Effective networking

Our networking events are rapidly growing and we have added more events that will bring greater opportunities to local businesses to engage, network and promote their products/services.

If you have come along to one of our events, you will have noticed the warm and welcoming approach that we take. We encourage everyone to get involved and promote what they do. BuzzConnect was created to bring people together and we believe that there should be no exclusions, no long-term contracts and no “performance pressure” such as speaking to the room and giving a 2-minute introduction about your company. Our monthly networking at Metro Bank is hugely popular and will always be free. However, our evening events

have a small charge which covers our immediate costs with proceeds going towards our chosen charity. This year we have partnered with Colostomy UK.

Networking Group on Facebook, so you can share your company information for free and be part of a thriving business community.

We look forward to welcoming you to our events this year, contact us if you have any questions.
