A MORTGAGE THAT WORKS FOR YOU WHEN YOU WORK FOR YOURSELF

Being self-employed can create challenges when it comes to securing a mortgage. Newbury Building Society believes that it doesn’t have to. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show more than 4.78 million people in the UK are self-employed, an increase of 114,000 from the same time last year, making it the second fastest growing group of earners in the UK. However, the self-employed, contractors and freelancers can often struggle to get on the property ladder as they find getting a mortgage challenging. Maybe we can help. Newbury Building Society believes that being self-employed should not be a barrier to obtaining a mortgage. Here are just a few reasons why Newbury Building Society can help; • • •

We are able to look at cases where the self employed history is less than 3 years Retained profits and Directors loans can be considered as a source of income We accept applications with a combination of employed and self-employed income

To help you plan for your mortgage application the following points are useful. Do keep up-to-date records and accounts. Do employ a certified or chartered accountant to prepare your accounts and tax returns.

Do speak to your existing lender or a mortgage broker about your options. Don’t forget lenders will credit check your business, as well as you. Don’t assume it’s impossible to get a mortgage. Need more reasons to talk to us? • • • • • •

We review all cases on an individual basis and do not credit score We are known for providing a tailored and individual service We have local branch appointments available Our mortgage advisers are CeMAP qualified We lend in England and Wales Saturday appointments are available in our branches

Whether you are buying for the first time, moving home or remortgaging, talk to us about our mortgages for the self-employed.

Visit our Newbury branch, call us on 01635 522588 or email newbury@newbury. co.uk Jane Bosher Senior Office Manager

YOUR MORTGAGE IS SECURED ON YOUR HOME. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE SECURING OTHER DEBTS AGAINST YOUR HOME. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON

Do you have any news that you would like to share? We’d love to hear from you editor@localbuzzmagazine.com

Community News your Community. your voice. A record number of students in West Berkshire will be taking part in the 2017 Young Enterprise Business Challenge starting in September.

Budding Business leaders need your help Young Enterprise West Berkshire (YEWB), the local arm of the national charity dedicated to helping youngsters understand business through experience, is organising the programme which runs until March 2018. In that time students from St Bartholomews, St Gabriels, Newbury College, Park House, The Downs, Down House, Little Heath, Theale Green and Willink will organise themselves by developing a business plan to form a company to create and develop a product which they will then market and sell. It is a challenging task but made easier by having a Business Adviser from Young Enterprise on hand to provide guidance, motivation and a touch of inspirational support. Could you be that Business Adviser? Young Enterprise West Berkshire is offering the opportunity to more local business people to become involved. Clare Kirk, Chair of YEWB says, “We have an excellent group of experienced volunteer Business Advisers, who come from all points of the business spectrum, but we want more local people to join us to provide even more inspirational support to local youngsters. The commitment is probably totals

around 30 hours during the six month programme. We provide training and support to all Business Advisers who also gain a lot from the experience.” Vicki Kyle-Lawrence, MD of Clere Bookkeeping Services, has been a YE Business Adviser for many years. She says, “I know what it takes to launch a new enterprise and jumped at the opportunity to help entrepreneurs of the future. However the benefits are mutual and every year I learn more about how the younger generation identify business development through the use of social media, fashion and ecommerce as a norm rather than an alternative to trading activities. To any business person thinking they would like to get involved then my advice is to do so, as it is a rewarding activity and certainly gives a fresh outlook on how our future business world is developing.”

If you would like to know more about becoming a volunteer Business Adviser then contact YEWB Board Member Geoff Knappett for an informal discussion - yewb@knappett.co.uk 6

Thatcham Historical Society We exist to promote an interest, not only in the local history of Thatcham and district, but also in historical matters in general. We hold nine meetings a year starting at 7.30pm, usually on the last Monday of the month, excluding school holidays. Past talks have covered reports of visits to the ancient civilisations of the Middle East and South America, aspects of industrial, transport and agricultural history, as well as aspects of the local history of Thatcham and District. The latter, where possible, are given by speakers who are involved in local research. Most talks are illustrated by slides and some have given members a chance to identify (or guess at!) the purpose of certain historical artefacts from local collections. You are welcome to join the society or come along as a visitor. To find out more contact us via email enquiries@ thatchamhistoricalsociety.org. uk or visit our website www. thatchamhistoricalsociety.org.uk.

Police Advice

Road safety

Collisions on the road are one of the leading causes of death in the UK. Many of these incidents could easily be prevented by driving more safely. Driving safely is your responsibility. Bad driving puts both your own and other's lives at risk. Collisions on the road can lead to life changing injuries for those

involved as well as resulting in serious consequences for offending drivers. Many fatal or serious collisions on our roads can be linked to the 'fatal four': n Speeding n Distraction n Not wearing seat belts n Driving whilst under the influence

of alcohol or drugs

Speeding - Speed limits are there for a reason. The risk of seriously injuring someone increases with your speed, a few miles per hour could be the difference between life and death.

Chamber Update. . . west berks

thatcham

Drink driving - If you drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, you put yourself, your loved ones and other road users at risk. Don’t take the chance, it's not worth the risk. Mobile phones - You are up to four times more likely to have a crash if you use your mobile phone whilst driving. Only use your mobile after you have stopped in a safe place.

Importance of key infrastructure

Our Superb Playing Fields

It is against the law to use a mobile phone whilst driving, this includes:

The Chamber has written to Lord Adonis following his call for “the Government to ensure that Brexit and a hung parliament do not delay or defer infrastructure projects which are critical to the UK’s competitiveness and productivity” and to “press ahead rapidly with key infrastructure plans.”

In the Northwest corner of Thatcham is probably one of the best sports facilities in Berkshire! Henwick Worthy Sports Ground adjacent to the A4, has in the upper section Tennis & Netball courts and floodlit artificial pitch for Hockey - which it is hope will be expanded.

n Picking up your phone to send and

Whilst the sentiments and contents are welcome TVCC CEO Paul Britton has stressed the “importance of key infrastructure remaining a critical priority in the region - most notably the Western Rail Link to Heathrow (WRLtH).” Furthermore, stressing that the UK cannot “afford infrastructure barriers to the free movement of businesses and goods.” If you have views, now would be a good time for your business to get involved with the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce.

In the lower expanse is a large open area for over a dozen Rugby/Football Pitches to be laid out. In the summer this can be used for Cricket and the immensely successful Family Fun Day and Rotary Car Show . In the mid section are extensive changing rooms with showers, and parking now available for about 190 cars and soon to open is a NEW BMX/ skateboard park which will be the second in Thatcham. This a vital hub for the health of all the district.

win Facts about wine

The French still drink more wine per capita than the Chinese with 53 litres per person per year versus 1.9 in China. The increasing popularity of red wine in China is largely due to the fact that red is considered to be a lucky colour. One of the world’s most famous Champagnes Dom PÊrignon was named after a monk.

Darker shades of wine, namely the darkest reds and yellow whites come from warm climates. Lighter colours come from cooler climates and taste lighter. There is increasing scientific evidence that moderate, regular wine drinking can reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and gum disease.

ine Evidence of grape pips at Palaeolithic sites indicates humans were eating grapes from around 7000BC. The first vineyard dates from 3200 BC when the Egyptians and Phoenicians began planting and tending vines.

A

t first grapes were grown only for eating. It is likely that wine was an accidental discovery. It would only have taken a few hours in full sun for ripe juicy grapes to begin fermenting (the process by which natural sugars are turned into alcohol) aided by the natural yeasts present in the ‘bloom’ on the fruit. Before long wine was being made throughout the Mediterranean.

Ancient methods of viticulture (winemaking) bear a lot of similarities to those still in use today. In Egypt grapes were collected in wicker baskets then trodden in huge wooden vats to get the fermentation process started. Once crushed the grapes, juice and skins were poured into loosely corked earthenware jars and left to finish the fermentation process. Finally the mixture was filtered, flavoured and poured into sealed amphorae.

We would be horrified now at what passed for wine in earlier ages. Makers preserved their wines with additions such as heavily sweetened date juice, honey and spices, and even pepper.

By the Middle Ages people tended to prefer full-bodied fortified wines (more akin to our sherries and ports) which were stored in wooden casks.

Over the course of the centuries winemaking evolved. Makers learned that vines grown on the thinner mountain soils seemed to produce superior wines to those grown on the plains. All the European vines originated from the same species. This made them vulnerable to pests and diseases (a problem affecting banana producers nowadays). A highly destructive aphid called the grape phylloxera reached Europe at the beginning of the 20th century and wiped out almost all of the Old World vines in just a few years.

Fortunately scientists stepped in and managed to develop healthy plants by grafting European varieties on to American rootstock, because the American vines were resistant to the aphid. This helped the Americans too because their native vines produced inferior wine. All of today’s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced from ‘rescued’ vines! There are now a huge variety of grapes for manufacturers to choose from and this, coupled with modern winemaking techniques have made wines more standardised and reliable. But recently there has been a move back to artisan wine-making by passionate manufacturers who want more individuality, uniqueness or ‘terroir’. Truth is there has never been a better time to be a wine-drinker.

Oyster A saltwater bivalve with a sea-salty flavour and a succulent texture. In the 19th century, oysters were plentiful and cheap and were used to bulk out dishes such as pies, soups and stews. Supplies decreased into the 20th century and now this shellfish is highly prized. Oysters packs a wallop of zinc, which is great for making you feel good and keeping up your energy. Not only does the zinc boost your sex drive, but it also ups your immune system, helps get rid of acne, eases rashes and makes your bones stronger.

Pear

Sweetcorn

The main British-grown varieties are Doyenne du Comice, Conference and Concorde. Comice has a meltingly soft texture, while Conference is slightly more granular. Concorde, a cross of the two pears, is buttery-textured.

Also known as corn on the cob, sweetcorn is composed of rows of tightly packed golden yellow kernels, growing along a tough central core. When ripe, the kernels are sweet and juicy, and are best cooked simply, with a little butter. Like peas, the natural sugars in the kernels turn to starch quite quickly, which makes the kernels tougher and less sweet, so it should be eaten as fresh as possible.

Some of the health benefits of pears include their ability to aid in weight loss, improve digestion, improve heart health, regulate the body’s fluid levels, reduce blood pressure, increase cognitive ability, boost the immune system and reduce inflammation. Pears are also delicious when poached or roasted.

Fine

Food

Sea Bass

Raspberry

A superb sweet, white, textured fish, sea bass is a popular feature of menus. It is caught in the North Atlantic, from Norway to Senegal. It closely resembles sea bream in flavour.

A member of the rose family, raspberries have a wonderfully intense, sweet taste, and many consider them to be the finest flavoured of all the berries.

Fig A great source of fibre and full of vitamins and minerals, dried and fresh figs have a long and illustrious history. Known for being a healthy and versatile ingredient they can add a burst of sweetness to all kinds of dishes. Figs have a naturally high sugar content, making them an ideal match for equally intense ingredients, such as salty prosciutto - a classic Italian combination. One of the world’s oldest trees, the fig tree can be traced back to the earliest historical documents and features prominently in the Bible. Figs are native to the Middle East and Mediterranean and were held in such high regard by the Greeks that laws were once created to prevent their export.

Raspberries grow well in cool, damp climates, and the red varieties, such as Heritage and Malling Jewel, are the most commonly sold, though you can also find black, yellow and golden types. They are an essential ingredient in the classic English dessert, Summer pudding, and their flavour combines well with that of other berries. 19

Laced Up and Cinched In In fashion everything old is new again, and that couldn't be more true when it comes to corsets. Rather than designing clothing around the body, corsets were introduced as a way to shape the body to conform to clothes. During the Elizabethan Era, they molded the torso into a cylinder rather than the more commonly thought of hourglass silhouette. The point of this was to flatten and raise the bustline, a much more desirable shape. It wasn't until later, in the 19th century, that corsets were used to draw in the waist of European women for that recognizable, cinched in figure created with wood and whalebones.

You don't need to be an officer to look great in khaki. A fitted garment that's belted or nips in at the waist will flatter any figure.

Currently celebrities have been bringing back the painful and potentially dangerous trend. Studies have shown that corsets shift organs and are not a healthy option. However, waist-training advocates like Kim Kardashian and Ciara seem to think it's worth the risk to mold their bodies.

10.

Apart from the body dysmorphia debate, the fashion industry is taking key aspects reminiscent of corsetry and incorporating them into tops, dresses and belts, without the pain. Corset-inspired details worn as part of, or over clothing, have been spotted on Kylie Jenner, Sofie Valkiers, Hailey Baldwin and on the runways at Dolce & Gabbana, Sally LaPointe and Cinq a Sept. While body positivity movements have been on the rise, achieving this “ideal shape” is still very popular. Personally, I'm not sure resorting to Victorian Era fashion trends (with known health risks) is the way to go. Instead I prefer the belted and laced-up look, which pays homage to the style of the corset, rather than the body molding function of it.

Khaki and Cream Epaulets, gold buttons, bomber jackets and khaki these are the latest trend designers are using to call us to attention! In Milan, Gucci and Dsquared2 created riffs on a traditional officer's jacket embellished with modern day passementerie. However, in NY and London shades of olive green and sandy brown, khaki ruled the runways! To learn about lace from the pros, Creatures of the Wind showed off long dress-like coats with inverted pleats worn over metallic trousers, at NY Fashion Week. Ulla Johnson and Dion Lee also celebrated this colour, favourited by the armed forces, with ruffled summery dresses and belted off-the-shoulder minis, respectively. British heritage brand Burberry, well known for their love of khaki and trench coats, didn't disappoint. Simone Rocha's half ethereal dress/half trench, turned the classic coat on it's head. Other labels, such as Barbara Casasola and Belstaff, presented sexy, cool jumpsuits, waking up the traditional khaki uniform. Not to be left out, Balmain gave khaki an innovative update as a high-fashion skirt, complete with a belted paperbag waist, a high centre-slit and cargo pockets in Paris. No matter where you go, everyone is saluting khaki!

A Bold Pout

Against an otherwise bare face, a loud colour will speak volumes. So, to really make a statement, swipe on a bright lipstick and keep the rest of your makeup muted. Not only will you save time getting ready, but your attention grabbing lips will also liven up any outfit. Try a flouro red as seen at Jason Wu, a lovely coral like the models donned at Versus or a hot pink shade similar to the one at Cushnie et Ochs. Perfect for a day at the office or date night, it's one beauty shortcut anyone can appreciate.

This soft shade has been used in home decor, packaging, and of course fashion, but what colour is it exactly?

Millennial Pink If you can't seem to put your finger on it, you're not alone! Millennial Pink is actually a spectrum of shades, which can appear as a soft pink and other times more beige. Encompassing Rose Quartz, Candy Pink and Pale Dogwood, Millennial Pink is defined as a soft neutral pink that's not too “sugary” or over-the-top. Full on pink silhouettes were really front and centre this season. Desigual and Balmain paired sheer Millennial Pink dresses with jackets for a two-toned sophisticated pink layered look. Prabal Gurung’s rose gown and thigh-high slit showed off another shade of this hot hue. However, not everyone explored the obviously sweet side of pink; some designers went an edgier, tougher route like Diesel Black Gold, who perfected the juxtaposition of soft and strong with cargo pants and combat boots in the pretty blush hue. Bottega Veneta sent Gigi Hadid down the runway in pink trousers and a matching pink buttoned top accented with a black belt and patent leather black shoes, which really highlighted the versatility of pink. No longer just for the Barbies and Elle Woods of the world, dressing in headto-toe pink can be surprisingly chic in these trendy, gender neutral shades.

Have you ever wondered if the work from home opportunities actually work? Well I'm living proof that it does. My name is Jo Scott and I've been running my own home based business now for three and a half years, which has paid me more income than my previous 9-5 corporate roles. My background was in sales and my job needed to change when I had my little boy Dexter. I didn't want to be the busy mum always on the road working away from home so I was desperately looking for something that I could do from home and that's when I was introduced to

an opportunity by a friend and it ticked all the boxes. In this short time I have built a booming global business and my family have travelled to places such as Johannesburg, Greece and Dubai all expenses paid by the company. I'm now helping many people locally and globally who are looking for the flexibility of earning an income from home part time or full time. Are you looking for a change? 1

GET A FRESH CUT. Before you let your hair take a summer of salt, chlorine & sun, get rid of any split ends before they start. Mel Harrison

2 3

WEAR A HAT. The obvious one. The UV rays damage the cuticle leaving hair dry & frizzy.

LEAVE IN CONDITIONERS. Products like Kevin Murphy’s LEAVE-IN REPAIR not only rebuilds and protects your hair from hot tool damage but those UV rays too.

Back to school aches? It's that time of year again, when the new school year is upon us and we are buying all the school essentials to put in little ones bag. But is their bag causing them aches and pains? Here are some tips to consider! (Yes, your teens may complain!) Make sure the bag is the correct size. The bottom of the bag should be resting in lower curve of the back and the top of the bag, just below shoulder level. A bag with a waist strap also helps to distribute weight. Some bags also have additional spine support. l Look

for bags with wide, padded straps as narrow straps can cause nerve compression in the arms.

4

FRIZZ FIGHT. To tame frizz from humidity start with a moisturising shampoo & conditioner. Blow dry and style your hair completely dry, then set with a cold blast from your dryer to prevent any moisture in the air affecting your smooth locks.

5

PRE-WET YOUR HAIR. Before you jump head first in to that pool, wet your hair through in the shower first to prevent it absorbing so much chlorine. Then rinse after to prevent build up. Follow with a clarifying shampoo. Try Kevin Murphy MAXI.WASH.

Creative Colouring

l Make

sure the bag doesn't exceed 20% of the child's weight as excessive weight causes stooping and rounding of the shoulders.

l Use

both straps rather than slinging the bag over one shoulder which creates an uneven weight and changes the centre of balance. Doing this long term can cause a postural scoliosis, which is a C or S shaped curve to the spine.

l Place

the heavier items in the bag, closer to your spine at the back of the bag.

Note: I will be back from maternity leave, part time from August 9th.

Brain breakfast food Hard-boiled Eggs One of the most important nutrients for brain function is protein. After several hours spent sleeping, your brain needs a protein boost in order to function properly as you start your day. Eggs contain an important brain nutrient, tyrosine, that can increase your alertness and get your brain ready to begin receiving and sending messages.

Remove morning madness Each evening, think ahead to the following morning; where can you lighten the load? Set the breakfast table as you clear the dinner dishes, and make sure breakfast foods are easy to reach. Lay out children's clothing the night before.

Use calendars Prepare your calendar for the upcoming school year, Keep one in your kitchen so everyone in your family can see what is on the agenda for the weeks ahead. Record important dates such as school closings, appointments and meetings. Designate each family member a coloured marker.

Strawberries and Blueberries Two foods high in antioxidants which helps to prevent oxidative stress on brain function. Sprinkle the berries in yogurt, make a smoothie or put them in their lunch bag as a light snack.

Yoghurt With plenty of calcium, protein and the amino acid Tyrosine, can help improve memory and alertness.

Although most of us are enjoying a relaxing summer break, the new school year is not far away. Here are some tips to help you be prepared.

School schedule During the last two weeks of summer, re-introduce a school year bedtime. Begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, closer to the hour they'll need to rise when school begins. Don't neglect mealtimes! Younger children, in particular, need to adapt to new meal routines before the school day demands it of them. Plan meals and snacks to accustom little ones to rituals of the school day before the school year begins.

Only buy what will be used Don’t go overboard buying new supplies thinking this will help you be more organized. Rather, look at the basic items you use and only buy those. Make a list of the items you need and only purchase those items when shopping.

Do it now August is the second-biggest sales month for clothing retailers. Back to school clothing sales begin as early as July!

When school begins Streamline dinner preparations. Try a session of freezer cooking to stock the freezer with prepared entrees for stressfree dinner on sports night.

Start shopping early for backto-school clothes and supplies. Don’t wait until the weekend before school starts. The stores will be crowded which may cause unnecessary stress.

Honeysuckle is perennial plant that can survive around 20 years in the wild.

Local Buzz Gardener Fergus Green

Honeysuckle I know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground and grow slowly upwards until they find something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks or trees decorating them with spidery flowers and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings.

A thriving Honeysuckle The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up it’s toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think about the forest floor where it grows wild. And it likes its head in the sun to encourage prolific flowering. I grow it like clematis - I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to over the cool shade they require.

Support Honeysuckle is not at all fussy about the support it needs. I have some

growing over a pergola, and some over a wigwam in a border near a bench, just so I can get the benefit of the scent when I sit there. I’m trying to establish one over the porch too. As it’s against a wall I am having to make sure that it receives enough water. My father had one growing over an old tree in his garden. If you want to do the same I’d advise planting it near the extremity of the branch canopy rather than near the trunk where root - competition will be fierce. Train the stems upwards along some garden twine into the branches and the result will be breathtaking.

Did you know? During Victorian era, Englishmen often planted honeysuckle in front of their houses to keep evil spirits and witches on the safe distance. People used to believe that flowers of honeysuckle tucked under the pillow ensure pleasant dreams. This old belief is still popular and flowers of honeysuckle are used today in the manufacture of herbal pillows.

Different varieties There are lots of varieties to choose from. Our native honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum has early and lateflowering varieties and for scent they are difficult to beat. I do have a lovely Italian honeysuckle, Lonicera caprifolium, which was recommended to me by Alan Titchmarsh at a Gardeners World event many years ago. I wanted summer fragrance and I have not been disappointed with the great Mr. T’s suggestion. Now is actually a good time to buy a honeysuckle as you can conduct a scent test at the garden centre.

Flowers of honeysuckle are used in the cosmetic industry for the manufacture of various beauty products and perfumes.

The Local Sound of Newbury and Thatcham

Based in our studio in Broadway House, we are currently broadcasting to Newbury and Thatcham – and to the world! – via our website and smartphone apps, 24/7.

The exciting news is that after a lot of hard work, the Kennet Radio team has won a coveted community radio licence to broadcast to Newbury and Thatcham on 106.7 FM as well. We are nearly there with the fundraising to buy our transmitter, so we should be on air by the summer.

We are not-for-profit, unlike our commercial counterparts or the BBC, and we are dependent on grants and donations as well as some advertising. Our low power transmitter means our coverage FM is very local.

Advertise with us! By broadcasting only to Newbury and Thatcham, the cost of advertising on Kennet Radio is a lot less than you might think. That means you can advertise your local business to a local audience, knowing that you’re not paying to advertise to listeners who are miles away. Kennet Radio only exists thanks to the dedication and commitment of its volunteers. Whatever your interest, we’d love to hear from you visit bit.ly/KRvolunteer online, fill in the volunteer form on our website, and we’ll be in touch.

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles. Popular with the miltary and commercial use, but there are many things to consider when flying a drone.

Check online where you can and cannot fly your drone. Be sensible and respectful and you will have hours of fun.

Where can I fly a drone in the UK? Unless you have a huge back garden it's usually impossible to fly your new drone because of limited space and the potential for crashing, but your neighbours could also make a complaint – especially if your drone has an obvious camera. You may well be able to fly in your local park, but always check before you fly. Some parks have signage which explains what is and isn't permitted. You might see a 'no model aircraft' sign, which also includes drones.

Drones are extensively used in law enforcement search, surveillance and rescue, high altitude imaging, emergency response, forest fire monitoring, humanitarian aid, flood mapping, product delivery, photography and film industry, petroleum spill monitoring and internet connectivity. In addition, drones are also being used for environmental monitoring and mapping, hyper spectral imaging, soil moisture imaging, plume dispersion and tracking, in-situ atmospheric monitoring and aerosol source determination among others.

Drones Drones markets promise to grow significantly because of the more economical visualisation and navigation provided by systems. Visualisation includes mapping, inspection, surveillance and package delivery from the air. The unmanned aircraft equipped with cameras are able to do things that cannot be done in any other way.

Military drones are flying cameras and flying weapons that can be remotely controlled. Each drone can choose thousands of vantage points, extending military strategic visualisation beyond what has previously been possible. They are used for surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence missions. They do 3D mapping and support ground troops. These are more energy efficient, last longer and have a significantly lower cost of operation than manned aircraft.

Drone aircraft are sophisticated and flexible. They take off, fly and land autonomously. They enable engineers to push the envelope of normal flight. Reconnaissance drones can fly for days continuously. Remote, ground-based pilots can work in shifts.

Basic Droncode: Keep your drone within your line of sight and at a maximum height of 400ft (122m).

l

l

l

l

l

Make sure your drone is within 500m from you horizontally. Always fly your drone well away from aircraft, helicopters, airports and airfields. If fitted with a camera, a drone must be flown at last 50m away from a person, vehicle, building or structure not owned or controlled by the pilot. Camera-equipped drones must not be flown within 150m of a congested area or large group of people, such as a sporting event or concert.

Chris Spratling is the founder & owner of one of the UK’s fastest growing business coaching practices and is building an impressive team with a growing reputation for getting local businesses GREAT results.

Realise your true potential Not surprisingly Chris was afforded the accolade of 2016 Business Coach of the Year based on client results. Whilst business owners want many things for their business Chris is unequivocal in saying that his Number 1 priority is simply to make his clients more money. He helps clients: l

Turn marketing into an investment rather than an expense.

l

Recruit, motivate and retain a winning team of employees.

l

Put systems in place that provide consistent results.

l

Find more time for family, friends and other interests.

l Ultimately

How Newbury businesses can avoid a summer staffing meltdown l

Summer is great, but businesses need to ensure they get staffing right.

l

Managing holiday bookings is a key part of ensuring the summer runs smoothly.

l

Be aware of the unique talent pool that is available over this period.

develop a business that can run without them.

Who is Chris?

 An entrepreneur and business owner with over 20 years of experience.

 A highly motivated and results-orientated business coach

with a proven track record of success across blue chip FTSE listed organisations, start-ups and a diverse range of SMEs in both B2B and B2C markets.

 An experienced executive with extensive experience of

working with both owner managed businesses and private equity backed organisations both in UK and overseas.

 An experienced professional, well-versed in initiating

and delivering business transformation and change management projects, mergers & acquisition activity, new product development, digital and omni-channel ventures.

Chris’s Mission as a Business Coach “My background has taught me that standing still isn’t a strategy for success. I believe that businesses need to constantly re-invent the customer experience in order to be exceptional at the things that matter most to the customer. Only then do businesses realise their true potential. To that extent, whilst change is often challenging for individuals and businesses alike, I am passionate about using my extensive experience and skills to help ambitious business owners realise their true potential.”

Holiday

After the June heatwave, some think summer is over whilst others believe there's more to come! Whichever proves to be true, the summer months present employers with a set of staffing challenges - from holiday clashes to using seasonal workers. As with most things, a bit of planning goes a long way. If holiday booking is not coordinated there is the potential for serious service gaps to appear. Encourage employees to let you know their plans as early as possible. Store the information in a spreadsheet or HR system, so you can look for pinch points. You don’t have to grant holiday requests, but be fair and ensure everyone knows the rules. If you are hiring temps or seasonal workers, the earlier you can start planning, the better. There is often a different talent pool available over the summer, of university students looking for seasonal work. Fixed-terms contracts and zerohour contracts are useful, but come with pitfalls, so ensure you take advice. With a little planning, business owners and managers can have a fantastic summer – and don’t forget to take a holiday yourself!

International Left-Handers’ Day

BUY ONE GET ONE FREE

The 13th of August is International Left-Handers’ Day. Launched in 1992, it is now an annual event where left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality (that’s the posh word for left-handedness).

Bring this voucher

The Day increases public awareness of the disadvantages of being left handed and also the advantages, because there are quite a few. In many sports for instance, there seems to be an advantage. Left-footed football players and tennis players find it easy to wrong-foot an opponent. A right-handed player is used to ‘like-handed’ opponents who play a similar game. A lefty will have faced more right-handers and thus be used to their "opposite" style of play. Left handed people can also be more creative, possibly due to the way the brain is wired. The left half of the brain, which controls the right hand, is also responsible for speech, language, writing, logic and numerical thinking. The right half, which controls the left hand, is also responsible for music, art, creativity, perception, spatial awareness and emotions.

Rafael Nadal's uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, famously had the foresight to train his right-handed nephew to be a left-handed player, which is generally considered an advantage in tennis.
