Your Local Buzz Volunteer Centre West Berkshire Volunteering, community activism, social engagement or just plain involvement with your community is right here in West Berkshire. Peel back the layers of community and Local Buzz Readers may be fascinated to know that 44-year-old volunteer recruitment charity, Volunteer Centre West Berkshire, is currently promoting around 440 different ways to become involved with your community in our district. Garry Poulson - Director Garry Poulson has been Director of the charity for twenty years and is wellknown in Newbury and West Berkshire for his creative recruitment campaigns and encouraging people from all parts of the district to get involved. Garry has served as Newbury Town Mayor, been President of Round Table, Chairman

of The Newbury Society and has lead on many community initiatives. There is probably no better person to turn to if you want to get involved in your community.

Garry told Local Buzz that readers can very easily find out about how to get volunteer by going online using the Volunteer Centre website www.volunteerwestberks. org.uk or by calling the office on 01635 49004 for an appointment. You will be welcomed and given lots of great information about how, where and when you can volunteer. Most importantly, Garry says, “there isn’t any pressure and our trained interviewer Chris Read will

If you are a Facebook user, have a look at the Volunteer Centres Facebook page where there are regular updates on new opportunities to help out”

Line closures - more dates announced GWR and Network Rail have confirmed more dates when a significant part of the line between Newbury and Reading will be closed. This is to facilitate electrification works, track renewal and ballast work. The first phase of works is scheduled to take place over the following four working-day periods, with a number of additional line blocks required to complete the work.

go through all kinds of volunteering opportunities based on skills, interests, time available and where they live. The Volunteer Centre is based down a little alleyway between Temptations Gifts and Pret-a-Manger in Northbrook Street. Local Buzz asked where is the greatest need? Garry replied “The answer is that there is constant need across many areas of benefit. If you want to assist older people, become a Befriender, help in a day centre or enjoy some admin and have managerial experience, then charities are always looking for trustees and committee members. If children and young people are more of a priority for you, there are many ways to support them. Become a School Governor or help at a community playgroup or train to become a family support worker. You may be interested in animals or conservation in West Berkshire, there are dozens of ways to help out at times to suit you.”

Garry will be writing a column for Local Buzz in future issues in view of keeping the readers up to date with what’s going on in West Berkshire's world of community work. LOCAL BUZZ

One step at a time

Our 'deer' friends

Lewis is a remarkable four-yearold who, despite suffering from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and limited vision, managed to complete a onekilometre challenge recently to raise money for Dingley’s Promise.

The last few years have seen high Hampshire’s dells, forests and fields welcome a number of new guests.

He has been attending the centre in Shaw since he was just under one year old and is off to The Castle School in September. For Lewis and other children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, it was encouraging to hear that Children’s Services in West Berkshire have been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted and the CQC this year, an unprecedented two-grade improvement in just over two years.

Thinking mainly of the native Red and Roe deer, this is not a bad thing, although it does on the whole pose future management questions including the particularly invasive Muntjac. Deer numbers are thought to have reached 2 million in Great Britain, their highest ebb since medieval times.

The inspectors spoke to children and young people, to parents and carers, and to staff. Amongst other positive comments, the inspectors found that there was a strong focus on preparation for adulthood and evidence of increased access to employment. One of my highlights of this year was attending the World of Work celebration at The Castle School which recognises the importance of work experience for the students and acknowledges the employers who offer these life-changing opportunities.

Rt Hon Richard Benyon MP for Newbury

Some Red, some Roe, some Fallow, some Sika, and with them Muntjac and the Chinese Water, I refer of course to the thriving deer population that, try as it might, fails to hide from anyone criss-crossing our corner of the county. Whether journeying from Tadley to Whitchurch or between Kingsclere and Andover, rarely a week passes when I do not spot them from the corner of my eye or, more rarely, have to slow to let a nervous doe tiptoe from the road.

Whether in the future we must develop an appetite for venison or whether they will need to be kept in reserves, I am in no place to speculate. That they thrive in the countryside of modern England however, is a sign that our country is still a large and somewhat wild one, something that our urban driven news narratives often lets us forget. So do keep a look out for the herds dotted around North West Hampshire and drive safely.

Thatcham Historical Society

Chamberhouse Mill Chamberhouse Mill stands as a possible contender as one of the two doomsday mills of Thatcham and was originally part of Crookham.

The mill, a working grist (corn) mill, was granted to Thomas Street in the 14th Century. The locals would bring their corn here to be ground into flour. It is not until 1656 that we have a name for a miller, in this case a Thomas Eastman, miller to Dowse Fuller of Chamberhouse. The mill passed down through family and changed hands until in 1882 Henry Smith became the miller. Henry lived at the mill with his wife, Sophia, and six children. In May 1909 Henry fell into the river and drowned. Two of the sons, Sidney and Fred, along with their sister Lillian, took over the mill trading as ‘Henry Smith & Sons’. Sidney died in 1936 and soon after Mr Tull, landlord, sold the mill to John Henry of Colthrop Mill. Lillian in 1959 leaving Fred as the last miller who manage to keep the mill running until his death on 21st January, 1965. The mill closed and was eventually sold to Mr M. V. Raphael who developed it into houses, thus ending over 600 years of milling . Care & Compassion From Sue Ryder

Sue Ryder provides hospice care for people facing a frightening, life-changing diagnosis. It’s not just expert medical care we provide, it’s the emotional support and practical things we take care of too. We do whatever we can to be a safety net for our patients and their loved ones. Our services cover West Berkshire from three sites: the unit for Newbury and the surrounding areas is located at the West Berkshire Community Hospital, Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading and Wokingham Day Hospice. We offer advice and support to people in their own homes through our community services and day hospice care at all three sites.

Day hospice services Our day services can support people to be cared for at home for as long as possible, providing practical care as well as preventing isolation. How often someone comes in depends entirely on their circumstances and needs. It could be for a medical procedure, such as a blood transfusion, for physiotherapy, or for a consultation with our therapy or social work teams. There’s the added benefit of enjoying an activity and a chat over a cuppa with people in similar

It’s not just expert medical care we provide, it’s the emotional support and practical things we take care of too. circumstances, whilst giving carers a break too.

Community services We don’t just care for people at our hospices; we also provide a variety of services from our expert teams out in the community, which enable patients to remain in the comfort of their own homes. Our Sue Ryder community nurses are a key part of this and are available seven days a week for home visits. They manage physical symptoms like pain, nausea or fatigue. They also work closely with GPs and other health and social care teams to ensure care and support is co-ordinated. The nurses will share expert advice, support loved ones, and if need be, provide a referral to our day or inpatient services.

Inpatient unit Hospice inpatient beds for the Newbury area are provided at the 15-bed Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading. All beds are in private rooms overlooking our wonderful courtyard garden and all have en-suite facilities. There are some beds for patients with palliative care needs in West Berkshire Community Hospital.

Support Sue Ryder It costs £15,000 a day to provide our services. We need your help. Whether it’s running, singing, baking or talking, there’s a way for you to get involved, and we will support you in anything you decide to do. Last year we provided 130,000 hours of care to people across West Berkshire, but we can help many more with the help of people like you.

Growing vegetables the Organic way Prepare your soil Good gardening starts with healthy soil. There are many soil types but all will benefit from following these tips: n

n

n

Dig clay soils in late autumn, and for all other types of soil dig in early spring. Dig out pits or trenches where your climbing beans will be growing, fill them with rough compost or kitchen waste (fruit and vegetable peelings) and re-cover with soil. This will hold on to water as well as providing natural food for the crop. Before planting, lightly fork compost into the soil where the leeks, lettuce, onions, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, parsley and broccoli will be growing, but not where the carrots will be sown.

If you have looked after your soil well and raised healthy plants, you should have strong growing, happy crops. n

n

All the seeds in this range, except carrots, can easily be sown indoors on a warm windowsill or in a greenhouse for later planting out, minimising the effects of the weather, birds and mice.

Water plants in when planting to help them to establish.

How to care for your growing organic vegetables If you have looked after your soil well and raised healthy plants, you should have strong growing, happy crops. n

n

Try not to allow weeds to establish. They will compete for nutrients and water. Grow some flowering herbs or annuals with simple open flowers near your vegetables to attract beneficial insects to prey on pest insects.

n

Move plants into larger pots as soon as their roots have filled the available space.

n

Broad beans are hardy enough to be planted out in early spring. Plant out other more tender crops after the risk of frost has passed. Do not plant out anything that looks weak or unhealthy.

n

Carrots, leeks, coriander, lettuce (July sowing) and onions can be sown direct where they are to grow.

n Remove

Sowing and planting your organic vegetables Check the information on your seed packet for advice on when to sow each crop. You will also find advice there on whether to sow direct into the soil or in a pot or tray indoors. Here are some tips for successful sowing and planting:

Don’t be tempted to sow too early outside. Seeds will not perform so well in cold wet soil.

n

n

Grow carrots under very fine mesh or insect-excluding netting to keep out carrotfly.

n Keep

indoor plants watered but be careful not to overdo it.

Liz Earle - Love British Food Ambassador Leading wellbeing expert and pasture-fed farmer, Liz Earle MBE is also helping to spread the message far and wide. “I’m often asked about what to eat for better health and so much of the good stuff comes from high quality, local and sustainable British

food”, says Liz. “As an organic and grass-fed livestock farmer, I’m also aware of how important it is to support our home-grown farming community who produce all this goodness. That’s why I’m so proud to be a new ambassador for Love British Food.”

Raymond Blanc Raymond is a firm believer in continuing to grow and develop. Raymond has never been formally trained. He began his career in England in 1972 as a waiter, took over the Rose Revived Restaurant when his chef became ill, and never looked back. He opened his own restaurant at the age of 28, ‘Les Quat’ Saisons’ in Oxford, and within just one year the restaurant had reached Michelin Star status. “It makes me so happy that so many local villages, small and large, come together. The work that they put into the projects is fantastic. It is a wonderful campaign to bring people together, it might be working as a team at a school or working as a community sharing ideas, using local suppliers and companies and making the most of what they have surrounding them.”

Be inspired “British Food Fortnight has been so powerful in inspiring people around the country, whether it is big cities like Bath, small communities, schools or care homes. Most importantly we are leading the way in encouraging the public sector to source more British food,” says Alexia Robinson, Founder of Love British Food. “Changing times bring both challenges and opportunities for Britain’s farmers and food producers. With Raymond Blanc and Liz Earle at the helm, a superb national committee and the best sponsor in the Co-op, Love British Food is leading the way in celebrating and promoting British food.”

Details on how you can get involved from lovebritishfood.co.uk

Y British Food Fortnight runs from 22nd September to 7th October 2018

ear after year thousands of people get behind the Love British Food campaign which culminates in British Food Fortnight. Communities come together to stage glorious celebrations of food, schools visit farms and learn more about the wonderful food produced on their doorstep while pubs, restaurants, hospitals and care homes change their menus in support, and a growing number of us actively seek out that label confirming it is British.

Love British Food is leading the way in celebrating and promoting British food.

Support in abundance This year British Food Fortnight runs from the 22nd September - 7th October 2018 and once again the Co-op is the Official Retail Partner. “More than any other retailer, the Co-op is making quality British food accessible and affordable to high streets throughout Britain and we are delighted to be working with them to fly the flag for our farmers and producers,” says Alexia Robinson.

“And we are so lucky to have many big names on our committee generating grassroots activity and reaching out to the public: the WI, National Trust, National Federation of Young Farmers, Campaign to Protect Rural England and a host of leading catering organisations.

The Co-op makes buying British easy The Co-op raises the bar for bringing British food to the high street and will be the only UK retailer to have 100% fresh British bacon, lamb, beef, chicken, ham, pork, sausages and turkey, part of their three-year plan to source UK meat and vegetables.

Every day, one oyster filters 50 gallons of water.

Oyster

A saltwater bivalve with a sea-salty flavour and a succulent texture. In the 19th century, oysters were plentiful and cheap and were used to bulk out dishes such as pies, soups and stews. Supplies decreased into the 20th century and now this shellfish is highly prized. TRY poached oysters with guacamole and sprout salad

Pear

Pears can be thick or thin-skinned with juicy sweet flesh that can be buttery or slightly granular in texture, depending on the variety. The main British-grown varieties are Doyenne du Comice, Conference and Concorde. Comice has a meltingly soft texture, while Conference is slightly more granular. Concorde, a cross of the two pears, is buttery-textured. TRY pear, hazelnut and chocolate pavlova

FOOD Organic

How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment.

Artichoke

The artichoke is mentioned as a garden plant in the 8th century BC. The edible portion of the plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom. A cooked, unseasoned artichoke has a delicate flavour.

Chicory blooms from July to October. Each flower lasts only one day. Flowers can be seen only during the sunny days.

Organic food is often more expensive than conventionally-grown food. But if you set some priorities, it may be possible to purchase organic food and stay within your food budget. There are many delicious recipes using organic seasonal ingredients online.

Chicory

Chicory can be eaten raw or cooked and comes in red and white varieties. The roots are propogated in warm, moist peat or sand, while the white, fleshy leaves are left to develop in darkness. TRY mackerel with rhubarb chutney and orange and chicory salad

Sea Bass

A superb sweet, white and textured fish. Sea Bass is a popular feature of menus. It is caught in the North Atlantic, from Norway to Senegal. It closely resembles sea bream in flavour. TRY roasted sea bass with chorizo, red onion and cherry tomatoes.

Cobnuts

Cobnuts, which grow in Britain, are a type of hazelnut. You may be able to buy fresh nuts, particularly native cobnuts, still in their husks when they are in season, but most are sold dried and processed. TRY fruit and cobnut crumble cream

Can you drink e n i F e h Prosecco to lose T ine V weight? There has been a lot of press recently that some wines can actually help your waistline. But can drinking prosecco really help you to lose weight? To crack that old chestnut, we need to look a bit closer at where the calories come from in the first place. Calories in wine come from two of its most essential ingredients – alcohol and sugar. All wines have alcohol (all real wines anyway) and they all have sugar. Both of these contribute to the caloric content of the wines. In most naturally fermented and produced wines, the higher the alcohol, the lower the residual sugar content in each bottle (remember that yeast converts sugar to alcohol during fermentation). So you could assume that the highest alcohol wines are the best to drink if you want to watch your waistline. Not necessarily so. Some of the highest alcohol wines also have some of the highest sugar content. Take port wine for instance. A very high alcohol wine (20% ABV) which is very sweet and has lots of sugar. It’s been fortified

by adding more pure alcohol while keeping a high sugar content to make it sweet. Calories are in the region of 150 per serving. Well, then you might decide, let’s just stick with my favourite dry red wine – a nice Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, typically 14% ABV. Not so fast. A 175ml glass of this famous red will set you back 175 calories, the same as 1/3 of an Egg McMuffin Sausage Sandwich! But don’t burn your wine cabinet just yet. If we look at a serving of our ever so popular Extra Dry Prosecco, then your waistline may thank you. It only contains 172 calories in TWO 125ml servings! Hallelujah! Our diet is saved and we can still enjoy loads of our favourite bubbly. Well maybe. Why you may ask?

It all comes down to how much you consume. Sure prosecco has less calories than red or white wine, but it still contains some calories. So the more you drink, the more calories you consume. A bottle of extra dry prosecco will add 516 calories to your intake. That’s one-quarter of a woman’s recommended daily calorie intake. Less dry ones even more.

Colucci’s exclusive offer to Local Buzz readers only - 50% off Colucci's Extra Dry Prosecco

Even the “low calorie” prosecco will have in the region of 50 – 60 calories per serving. So can prosecco help you lose weight? Well, when we want to watch our waistlines and still want to enjoy the party, prosecco is our drink of choice. And according to nutritionist Rick Hay, the trick is to drink prosecco with a proteinbased meal or snack, as it helps slow down the rate at which the sugar is absorbed.

But all in moderation!

“I couldn’t do it . . . I’m just not a morning person. . . I can barely get through my day now, let alone by exercising before it starts!” Sound familiar? Although it can seem daunting, a morning exercise routine can really change your entire mindset.

Following a set routine will help you feel calm and in control. It will reduce anxiety and mental fatigue, leaving you feeling happier and more productive.

We all know exercise is good for us, but we don’t all realise how far-reaching those effects can be, and just how many aspects of our lives they can affect than merely the physical.

Starting your day by completing a task will help you to feel strong and accomplished, and this feeling will last the whole day, enabling you to attack your day head on, with confidence.

Creating a daily morning ritual is empowering, it gives you a sense of being in charge of your day, right when it’s most beneficial – at the very start. What you do (or don’t do) first thing can set you down a certain path for the rest of the day.

Moreover, if you make that task was an exercise session, then you not only get all the above, but the vast array of enormous benefits from regular exercise on top! But that’s a chat for another day. . .

daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life.

Gyms and fitness classes are the ultimate place for me to go to find patients. These are the little mistakes to avoid!

Is your fitness regime causing you injury? Slouching Slouching over the gym equipment is creating a hunched back and flexed neck, which long term can lead to pain. Try standing/ sitting tall.

Incorrect techniques A lot of exercises require you to activate your core to support your spine. If you don’t, it can cause injury to discs and soft tissues. Ask the gym trainer for help.

Just doing cardio Its important to incorporate strengthening exercises into your routine so your body can withstand the pressure of cardio exercise.

Stretching cold muscles

Forgetting the warm down

Increases your risk of soft tissue injuries.

Your muscles stay short and tight after being contracted during exercise, which may lead to injury.

Skipping the warm up Going straight into exercise when your muscles haven’t warmed up, increases your risk of muscle strains and tears.

Bouncing during stretches Increases your risk of soft tissue injuries. Hold a static stretch instead.

Join the World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 28th September for Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. How did it all begin? The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, they did it again the following year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning has raised over £200 million for Macmillan. Overexposure and burning is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs but tanning is a natural bodily function, programmed into all of us and designed to help offer a natural protection from overexposure. With burning being a damage to the outer layers of skin and tanning being a brown protective pigment from beneath the skin, we can now differentiate the two and ask the question, should we prepare our skin a little before UV exposure?

Package holidays, long days by the pool and lazy days at the beach. How many of us are guilty of spending too long in the sun and suffering a sunburn as a result? Whilst it might seem like a part of life to occasionally, accidentally get sunburned, it can and should be avoided at all costs. Of course, there are many SPFs on the market but at Consol, we believe exposure should be built up gradually and sensibly and long exposure periods outside with unprepared skin, in many cases will lead to damage. By taking a course of short and controlled exposures on our 0.3 safe limit sunbeds with a session tailored to your skin type, customers can generate a deep and dark tan whilst practically eliminating the risk of burning and overexposure. Once the skin has produced the melanin, exposure outside can be increased with caution and damage is less likely. Shared Ownership Shared Ownership can be an affordable way of getting onto the property ladder.

If you cannot afford to buy a house or flat outright, then this could be an option for you. It allows you to buy a share in a property and then pay rent on the rest. However, you need to be sure that you can afford the mortgage and the rent. People who go through the shared ownership option typically own between 25% to 75% of the property initially.

What questions do you have? Allow me to share with you the answers. No obligation, free meeting.

Additional borrowing can open up a world of different opportunities Over the duration of your mortgage your circumstances could change. This means you may need to borrow additional funds on top of your current mortgage. There are a number of reasons why you may want to consider additional borrowing. Below, we’ve listed four of the most common motivations many of our members choose to take on a little bit extra: 1. Build the extension you’ve been waiting for Home improvements are a common reason for borrowing extra money. Whether that is to convert the dead space in your loft or simply to upgrade your kitchen, renovating your home is not only enjoyable, but it may also add a boost to the value of your property when you come to sell. 2. Raise capital and gift to a loved-one as a deposit Providing the parent or grandparent owns their home, equity can be released from their property by raising a mortgage. By doing so, parents can unlock cash on their property to gift their children or grandchildren a deposit for their own home purchase. 3. Buy out a joint-borrower and/or partner following a separation (transfer of equity) As your circumstances change you may find that you need to tweak an existing mortgage. Transfer of equity refers to making a change to a mortgage – either adding or removing a person – for a range of reasons such as divorce, separation and bereavement.

4. Purchase further shares of your Shared Ownership property Staircasing is a term given to buy extra shares in a property purchased through the government’s part-rent part-buy Shared Ownership scheme. To be able to do so successfully, your current lender must confirm that they are willing to lend you further funds to be able to afford an extra slice of the property. The amount you can borrow will ultimately help determine the size of your further share. If you are considering borrowing additional funds, please contact us and arrange an appointment. We provide a tailored and individual service, and our qualified mortgage advisers are available for Saturday appointments. YOUR MORTGAGE IS SECURED ON YOUR HOME. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE SECURING OTHER DEBTS AGAINST YOUR HOME. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPLAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

For example, additional borrowing may help one half of a partnership buy out the other half to change the deeds into one name and continue the monthly repayments.

Introducing

LITTLE PLUGGER The 2-in-1 garden tool designed to make your life much easier when weeding and planting bulbs in lawns and grassy areas.

BRITISH MADE

BULB PLANTER

Bulb planting in your lawn or grassy areas has never been easier. With the Little Plugger, there is hardly any bending, saving the backache you would normally experience. Easy to use and quick to operate, this method will save you time and effort and since the same soil goes back into the same hole it came from, you will see little or no obvious disturbance, leaving you an almost seamless planting. For bulbs up to 2 inches (51mm) diameter.

WEEDING MADE EASY

The weeding operation is also easy. Simply remove the offending weed in your lawn by the Little Plugger method, then eject the soil plug from the device, turn it upside down and re-insert it into the same hole. This way the weed is upside down, 4 inches (approx. 102mm) deep and the weed will die. You are now left with a 2 inch (51 mm) diameter soil area which will allow the surrounding grass to grow back over it.

No hole left to fill! No weed to dispose of! No fuss!

01488 658 709

“Some time ago, I had to plant 3,000 Crocus bulbs into my lawn and my engineering background enabled me to come up with the simple, time and energy saving idea of the Little Plugger. It also saved me from the backache that I would have had without it!” Roy Green - Inventor
