Be a Young Festival Critic

update. . .

If you have a passion for music and would like to try your hand at journalism then the Newbury Spring Festival provides the ideal opportunity. Anyone aged between 15 and 30 can join the scheme to be a Young Festival Critic. All you have to do is choose an event to go to, for which the Festival will give you a free ticket and then afterwards submit a review. At the end of the Festival a professional panel of distinguished judges from the media and music world will choose a winner and two runners up who will then be awarded cash prizes. There are a wide variety of events to choose from

depending on your taste in music. If you like classical the orchestra concerts are a good start, but there is also a piano recital from Stephen Hough or a choral concert by Voces8 or The Sixteen to name but a few. Alternatively the Corn Exchange will host a programme which includes jazz, a musical, ballet, folk, African drummers or Bollywood. Morgan Szymanski

For more information on how to become a Young Festival Critic go to www.newburyspringfestival.org.uk or email jan@newburyspringfestival.org.uk Tickets are allocated on a first come first served basis.

It’s an exciting time for Thatcham Vision. As we move to being a ‘hands-on’ ACTION organisation we are looking at becoming a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation). This will have the merit to all of us by showing Partners, Donors and our Community we are here to stay. Other benefits will enable us to claim gift aid, make contracts and offer some indemnity for our volunteers. THE BIG TENT is another great advantage for us going forward. We can become an INCUBATOR for clubs & new voluntary activity in our area, offering many of the benefits of our status and buying power but leaving the day to day management of your new group to you. Already our website gives groups without a web presence the opportunity to have one but with no costs. We will even train you up so that you can add / edit your own content. If you are interested let us know. The future is exciting and involving for Thatcham Vision, if you are concerned or interested in your area then get in touch we can match your skills and interest to out many groups so that going forward we all WIN. st By David Conque

Police Advice Summer Crime Prevention Advice Now the weather is brightening up and the sun is shining people become complacent when it comes to their home security. The most common

cases of opportunist summer burglary involve offenders that: l enter

an insecure front door while residents are in the back garden l enter doors that are closed but unlocked at night while residents are asleep reach through windows to take valuable items.

Crime reduction advice Ensure that windows and doors are closed and locked when you are out. Don’t leave small windows open.

If you want to leave windows open while you sleep, fit window restrictors so they cannot be fully opened, or make sure they are not large enough to allow access to a burglar. When out in your garden ensure that windows and doors to the front of the house are secure. It only takes a second for someone to get into your home and take things without you noticing.

Our Broadways Soul!

Following a very successful Spring Networking Breakfast at the Donnington Valley Hotel, we are pleased to report that three new members joined the Chamber.

According to Thatcham Historical Society it's been suggested that in c1303 St Marys may have been the Minster (Main) Church for all of our local area!

They are excited about coming along to the launch of Thames Valley Open for Business campaign at Ascot Racecourse on the 9th May and the International Technology conference at Microsoft on the 17th facilitated by the voice of Siri UK nonetheless. I am also delighted to announce the appointment of our new Membership Sales Executive, Alex Broad who would welcome all new enquiries regarding the business support on offer from the Chamber. Please do get in touch with him on 07768 660697 or alexbroad@tvchamber.co.uk.

Sara Parris Business Manager West Berks Chamber of Commerce 01753 870500 or email customerservices@tvchamber.co.uk www.westberkschamber. tvchamber.co.uk

The Society believes that the current building - just off The Broadway, was first built c1141, replacing an even earlier wooden Saxon Church. St. Marys present prepossessing appearance is predominantly due to a very sympathetic Victorian refurbishment, when most of the exterior was faced in flint and many of the internal structure were improved and upgraded. Making the edifice a wonderful place to wander around and absorb its spirituality acquired over a thousand years. More mysteriously - we're not certain the name is correct, for more information on this perhaps ask the local vicar or go to ThatchamHistoricalSociety.org.uk (who celebrate their 50th Anniversary this year).

IS SHARED OWNERSHIP THE KEY TO BUYING YOUR OWN HOME?

In last year’s Autumn Statement the Government pledged to inject £1.4billion into affordable housing plus £2.3billion for more homes in ‘areas of high demand’. The Investment is to be shared between three current schemes. One of these schemes, Shared Ownership, has been helping people into home ownership for the last 30 years, but what is it? Shared Ownership provides access to homeownership that would otherwise be unaffordable. The scheme is a cross between buying and renting and allows the purchaser to buy a share in a property between 25% - 75% of the purchase price, and then pay rent on the remaining share. The purchaser will often require a smaller mortgage for the share they are purchasing. There is an option to buy further shares in the property at any point in the future. This process is known as staircasing and provides the opportunity for future outright ownership. What are the benefits for Shared Ownership? Your deposit can be as little as 5% of the share, not the whole property value. Depending on the Housing Association’s criteria, you can start with purchasing as little as a 25% share of the purchase price, gradually increasing your share in the property when you can afford to and eventually own the property outright. The rent paid on the remaining share is often much less than the rental rates charged on the open market. Am I eligible? You are eligible if you are at least 18 years old but it’s worth noting that some mortgage lenders will require the minimum age to be 21 years old. You will need to have enough savings to cover the minimum 5-10% of the equity share you are buying, as a deposit. In addition, you will need at least £2,500 to cover the costs of buying a home.

You must have a gross household income of no more than £80,000 per annum or £90,000 per annum in Greater London, and must not already own a home. Last but not least, you must be able to demonstrate a good credit history and you must not be in rent arrears, as well as ensuring you can afford regular payments and costs involved in buying a home. Myth Busting • • • •

Is not just for first time buyers Shared Ownership properties are often sited in new private developments Shared Ownership refers to how the property is owned, not lived in You don’t need permission to decorate your home.

How do I get a Shared Ownership Mortgage? Newbury Building Society has been providing mortgages and savings products for over 160 years. We’re one of the oldest surviving building societies in the United Kingdom, with over 66,000 members, and one of the few lenders who provide products up to 95%, even on Shared Ownership. To find out more about Help to Buy Shared Ownership schemes you can visit the Help to Buy Government website (www.helptobuy.gov.uk/sharedownership), or you can visit our Newbury branch, call us on 01635 522588 or email newbury@newbury.co.uk YOUR MORTGAGE IS SECURED ON YOUR HOME. How can West Berkshire businesses handle the rise to the National Minimum and Living Wages?

National Minimum and Living Wages? l

The headline National Living Wage rate has risen to £7.50 per hour.

l Employers

should tread carefully when responding to the rises.

l Businesses

that fail to comply will face large fines and public naming and shaming.

It has been well reported that on 1st April, the National Minimum and Living Wages rose, affecting the whole workforce. These wage rates are important for protecting society’s lowest paid. And paying staff well is an obvious tactic for recruiting and retaining good employees. But even so, local employers are facing many pressures on staffing costs, so how to handle the rise?

Let’s start with what you cannot do. Dismissing staff purely because they qualify for the National Living Wage is not an option! Do this and your employees will be able to claim automatic unfair dismissal, as employment law protects against this. Outsourcing to the ‘gig economy’ should be treated with caution too. Some businesses have taken on these ‘self-employed workers’ to avoid paying NI contributions, wage obligations, employment rights, and auto enrolment. But this approach could still result in litigation. Uber drivers took Uber to a tribunal and won, and there have been other high profile cases too. Ignoring the minimum wage obligations is certainly not an option. Business owners could be fined up to £20,000 per worker plus wages due, as well as face a public naming and shaming.

hrdept.co.uk

The most positive way forward is to embrace the rises as part of a drive to increase productivity. Creating the right environment for employees to thrive and develop, and offering better pay and conditions than your competitors tends to create workers who are more inclined to go the extra mile for their organisation. Make sure wage rises are well communicated along with any other benefits you offer. If your business is struggling to meet the increased financial obligations, then you might consider redundancies. Tread carefully though. It must be the role that is made redundant, not the person. Get this wrong, and that is another sure-fire route back to the courts. If you would like specific advice and guidance on this or any other aspects of people management please get in touch.

Planning for retirement is just one area in which, with the benefit of hindsight, many people wish they’d taken action earlier.

Planning for Retirement How often in life do we look back and wish we had done things differently? According to a recent study, two in five pensioners regret retirement-planning mistakes which have left them struggling financially.1 Nearly one in five say that they didn’t save enough for retirement, and 15% regret not starting to save earlier in their working lives. There are some compelling reasons why a pension is still the most obvious answer. Pension contributions attract tax relief on the way in and they accumulate capital gains free of tax once inside. When you access your pension savings, the first 25% is normally tax-free. While you cannot draw benefits until your 55th birthday, this can also be an advantage as it restricts the temptation to tap into your retirement fund before then. Getting off the mark How much pension income you need in 10

retirement will be determined by a number of factors, including your health, your living expenses and your desired lifestyle. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. However, the average worker in the UK earns £26,364 a year2, so a pension income of around £20,000 might seem like a reasonable target for most people. Assuming you qualify for the full single-tier State Pension of £8,094 a year3, you would need to find at least £12,000 a year from your other pensions to achieve an overall income of £20,000 per annum. This analysis assumes that the fund would be used to purchase an annuity. Of course, under ‘pension freedoms’, people can draw down their defined contribution pension in a variety of ways. Accessing your savings through Drawdown can provide you with more flexibility and this is where it’s important to take advice to ensure you get the right retirement path or combination.

andrewstreetwm.co.uk

Playing catch up However, the fact remains that the best way to secure a comfortable retirement is to save as much as possible as early as possible in your working life, and take financial advice. The longer you delay saving, the harder it will be to build the kind of fund that will see you through retirement. The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances.

Coping with Exams Exam is like a milestone in your course of life. At the exam you have a chance to show people and yourself what you have learnt and what skills you have acquired. Exams test many qualities at a time - how strong your nerves are, your partnership ability, ability to systematically thinking, acting in critical situations and many others. In other words, it checks essential life skills, making you more responsible. The success of your exam does not depend only on the knowledge you possess in the subject, but on individual features: thinking peculiarities, ability to concentrate under stress etc. To cope with your task and attain best results in the subject, you should be aware of your peculiarities. If you have rich imagination and remarkable imaginative thinking, you should not give way to fear and emotions, drawing terrifying pictures of exam in your head. You’d better use your imagination for memorizing the material – build up schemes, pictures and comparisons. When you prepare for the exams, at first divide all the information into big sections, then into smaller divisions so that the information may be presented as a scheme. You should ask yourself "What is the most important here?". During the exam look through all the tasks and start with the easiest. Think over the detailed plan of fulfilling every task.

Concentration If you find concentrating a problem then rational time management can help. For you taking the exam starts with preparation for it. Divide all the information into sections to be learnt every day. You should strictly follow the schedule. Alternate work (every hour) with rest (10 – 15 minutes). At the exam be especially careful when reading the task, focus on it and forget about the rest. Good organisational skills

knowledge. If you have a task you think you can’t do - do not worry. You will have time to return to it afterwards. When you prepare for exams your eyes experience great strain that is why breaks are indispensable. Not to make the exam a deadlock, never set impossible tasks. Don’t expect a disaster and prepare for the exam beforehand when you are calm and relaxed. Before the exam have a good sleep. Take a deep breath and try your best.

Before the exam have a sound sleep and you should be confident of your

We salute fathers all around the world and honor them on 'Father's Day'. But are we alone? Do other countries celebrate Father's Day? Yes they do and the date varies from country to country. We celebrate on the third Sunday of June which is the same as Canada and America. Argentina, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Mexico, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and Venezuela also celebrate.

In Australia and New Zealand Father’s Day is on the first Sunday in September. In Thailand it is celebrated on December 5, which is the birthday of the country’s king and Brazilian dads are honored on the second Sunday of August. Father's Day is a relatively modern holiday, so different families have different traditions. These can range from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all father figures

In Mexico Father’s Day is referred to as “Día del Padre”, where many families get together, prepare meals and distribute gifts to fathers or father figures. In South Africa, many social and cultural societies host Father's Day celebrations to stress the important role of fathers in nurturing children and building stronger society. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. The June solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father's Day so some people see a link between the two.

Spring/Summ

Stay up to date with new fashion trends 2017 brings a mixture of 80s trend with sassy curls. I wouldn't be so quick to put away those straighteners as we are also seeing mega sleek hair. Why not add a bohemian feel with micro plaits and a flower head band, perfect for weddings or festivals. High pony are the way forward for up-dos. . . wrap a section around the base to add a fresh and fancy style! Turn the high pony into a ballerina bun which will also keep you on trend this spring and summer. SPRING FEVER COLOUR! Ombre hair is evolved yet again, coming in hot with a more soft and sophisticated look called colour- melting. This technique blends the highlights with the base colour of the hair using multiple shades to create the 'melted' effect. The technique creates an optical illusion and tricks the eye making you believe the flowing colours occurred naturally. Whether the trasition is from brown to bleach blonde or Lavender to turquoise. Books Daughter of the Forest

Noughts and Crosses

Holiday in the Hamptons

Juliet Marillier

Malorie Blackman

Sarah Morgan

Based loosely on the legend of the Children of Lir and elements of the German fairytale ‘The Six Swans’ Marillier manages to conjure up the rich and mystical landscape of ancient Ireland. Sorcha is the youngest of seven children and is raised largely by her six older brothers following the death of her mother during her birth. Her father remarries but his new wife is jealous and attacks the children. Sorcha escapes but her brothers are all turned into swans. Desperate to save them she learns that they will be freed if she weaves six shirts out of nettles without speaking a word to anyone.

Noughts and Crosses tells of a divided society with two groups. The Crosses are the lucky ones: born into privilege and wealth. They run the country and have the best funded schools. But the Crosses couldn’t function without the other half – the noughts. The noughts are the bottom half of society. Their purpose is to work for Crosses and to keep the country ticking over. At the start of the story 13-year-old Sephy (a Cross) is secretly continuing a childhood friendship with Callum (a nought). This is a friendship that seems to be on a path to selfdestruction as their feelings for each other grow.

Professional dogwalker Felicity Knight loves everything about New York until her ex-husband starts working at her local vet clinic. She hasn’t seen Seth Carlyle in ten years, but one glimpse of him and Fliss’s heart hurts. So when her grandmother in The Hamptons needs help for the summer, it seems the perfect way to escape her past.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness

What the Ladybird heard on holiday

Arundhati Roy

Julia Donaldson

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness takes us on an intimate journey across the Indian subcontinent - from the cramped neighbourhoods of Old Delhi and the glittering malls of the burgeoning new metropolis to the snowy mountains and valleys of Kashmir, where war is peace and peace is war, and from time to time 'normalcy' is declared.

Those two bad men, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh, are back! They may be in the city instead of the farm, but they haven't changed their thieving ways. In fact, they've got even more ambitious. They're planning to steal a monkey from the zoo and use it to pinch the Queen's crown. It's a pity for them that a certain crime-busting ladybird is holidaying in the very same city.

Gnocchi

4Food Trends

Food is just like fashion and interior design, trends come and go, but what is 'hot' and not in the burn your mouth kind of way this month. . .

Tomatoes

1

Tomatoes are such a versatile fruit to be enjoyed hot or cold. Here are some interesting facts about one of our favourite fruits. . . Until the 18th century, the tomato was more often called the love-apple. We eat 6oz (160gm) of fresh tomatoes per person per week. Over 650 million bottles of Heinz Tomato Ketchup are sold around the world each year, with annual sales of more than ÂŁ1billion. Simple delicious tomato sauce 1 Heat the olive oil in a medium size pot over medium heat. 2 Add garlic and saute for a minute. 3 Add fresh tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, bay leaves, thyme, salt and pepper. 4 Bring to a boil and immediately reduce to a simmer. 5 Simmer for 10-15 minutes. 6 Either chill in the fridge or place in the freezer for another day.

Gnocchi

2

Gnocchi are small Italian dumplings usually made from potato, flour (traditionally buckwheat flour) and egg then shaped into small ovals with a ridged pattern on one side. Gnocchi are often poached and then cooked au gratin (with breadcrumbs and grated cheese) in the oven. Gnocchi and tomato bake 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 400g can chopped tomatoes 500g pack gnocchi Handful of basil leaves torn A 125g ball of mozzarella, torn into chunks

1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan, then soften the onion and pepper for 5 mins. Stir in the garlic, fry for 1 min. 2. Tip in the tomatoes and gnocchi, then bring to a simmer. Bubble for 10-15 mins, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi is soft and the sauce has thickened. Season, stir through the basil, then transfer to a large ovenproof dish. Scatter with the mozzarella, then grill for 5-6 mins until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

Orange wine

3

Orange wine is a bit of a misnomer because it isn’t referring to a wine made with oranges.

To make an orange wine you take white grapes, mash them up and put them in a vessel (often in large cement or ceramic vessels). Then, they are typically left alone from 4 days to sometimes over a year with the skins and seeds still attached. Orange winemaking is typically a very natural making process that uses little to no additives sometimes, not even yeast. Orange wines taste different than regular white wines and have sour taste and nuttiness from oxidation. They have been described as robust and bold with honeyed aromas of hazelnut, brazil nut, bruised apple, wood varnish, linseed oil, juniper, sourdough and dried orange rind. Why not give it a go!

Camel milk

4

Camel milk has been used for centuries as a natural remedy in the Middle East, Asian and North African cultures. Nomads and Bedouins rely on its nutritional and medicinal properties. It has enough nutrients to sustain a person through the day. In many countries, camel milk is given to babies suffering from malnutrition.

Camel milk has a high vitamin and mineral content and immunoglobin content. It is three times higher in vitamin C than cow's milk and 10 times higher in iron.It tastes like milk with a slight salty taste. You can buy the milk online and may find in some supermarkets. Be aware however, there are roughly 12,000 cows for every single camel in Europe which is reflected in the price so hold your glass carefully with both hands!

A camel has three eyelids and two rows of eyelashes that prevent sand entering their eyes. 25

Besides choosing the right bike based on your riding style, you should choose the one that fits your body. What should you pay attention on before taking out the wallet?

Buying a mountain bike? When you select a new mountain bike, you will see a several models from the same category. Apart from known variables relating to suspension travel, frame geometry and wheels diameter, there are other important variables to which riders must look at before a purchase. Adjusting the bicycle to a biker’s body is a primary requirement in a new mountain bike purchase and has significant influence on the ride.

Long Like Spaghetti

The majority of the mountain bikes are designed for riders of 1.75 meters, weighting around 75 kilograms and with above average form. If those are your values, you're lucky, because the amount of bikes that fits you is almost endless.

If your height is in between two sizes, for example between small and medium, both are appropriate for you. If you ride fast and enjoy mostly from cross-country styles, take advantage of the larger frame (longer wheel base, which provides high-speed stability at the expense of maneuverability). If you

Taller riders usually ride more "elegantly" than the low ones. Mountain bike riders with short legs and a solid upper body seem often clumsy. If you're tall choose the lightest frame as possible with a short suspension travel. As long as you are not an overweight, let your hands and feet do most of the work, and enjoy a light and agile bike. Stuck in the Middle

The Local Sound of Newbury and Thatcham

ride technical, you should choose a smaller size to easily tackle jumps and bumps at low speeds. "Supersize" Some of the high weight bikers prefer to ride on a low weight gear, which is not a good match. Heavy riders should concentrate on bicycle parts survival and not to pay attention on overall bike weight. A rider that weights over 90 kilograms and prefers a cross-country riding style should purchase a 5 inch trail bike weighing 13 kilograms, and not a competitive hard tail bike.

The exciting news is that after a lot of hard work, the Kennet Radio team has won a coveted community radio licence to broadcast to Newbury and Thatcham on 106.7 FM as well. We are nearly there with the fundraising to buy our transmitter, so we should be on air by the summer.

We are not-for-profit, unlike our commercial counterparts or the BBC, and we are dependent on grants and donations as well as some advertising. Our low power transmitter means our coverage FM is very local.

Upper Cross Syndrome How many of you put your aches and pains down to bad posture? Are you stooping your shoulders, flexing your neck forward and worrying about getting a “hunchback.” If you are, you probably have a muscular imbalance between the muscles of the neck, shoulder, upper back and chest. The main culprit? The Trapezius muscle: A large, kite shaped muscle that covers your upper back and neck and helps to stabilise the shoulder and it is overused. How many of you are subconsciously holding your shoulders up now for no reason at all? What happens is the upper part of the trapezius muscle and the pectoral muscles in your chest, shorten and become tight, whilst the middle and lower part of the trapezius and the muscles at the front of your neck become longer and weaker. This imbalance can lead to joint dysfunction, joint instability, muscle and nerve pain, headaches and long term can lead to osteo-arthritis! Simple tips: l

Imagine a piece of string is pulling you up from the top of your head- automatically improves posture.

l Squeeze

your shoulder blades together to prevent rounding of the shoulders.

l Re-train l Come

yourself to stop holding your shoulders up.

Skin Deep The skin is our largest body organ. It works quietly away, constantly renewing itself, shedding dead cells every 28 days. It also provides a barrier against the environment and keeps our insides where they should be! Which skin technologies really work? Alpha-hydroxy acids : Their effectiveness depends on concentration. Between 8-15% they are a very effective skin smoother. At strengths of over 15% they are used in chemical peels which should only be carried out by a Dermatologist. Trans-retinoic acid : Has been proven to reduce wrinkles, increase epidermal thickness and stimulate collagen deposition. It is effective in serum at very low concentrations but the effect is cumulative, so you will need to view it as a long-term strategy. Vitamin C serum : This is a highly effective anti-oxidant and wrinkle-reducer but needs to be concentrated (10% or more) and stabilised in order to work. Keep it out of the light and use in the morning. Use only stabilised, colour-free preparations. If there is a yellow tinge, it is no longer effective.

Pain is not normal and it shouldn’t be accepted! and Richard Streets Clare Gangadeen

Targeting Pain Jackie Osborne interviews Clare Gangadeen and Richard Streets about their new combined therapies which has been extremely successful for relieving chronic or acute musculoskeletal pain. Each technique has its own strengths. For example, while Soft Tissue Therapy focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive movements or poor posture, acupuncture reduces inflammation, accelerates the healing process, decreases pain and works deep muscles that are difficult to access. Combining Soft Tissue Therapy and Acupuncture “Through the combination of Soft Tissue Therapy and Acupuncture, you can often speed up the healing process and target stubborn, chronic pain. It also works well to treat symptoms of depression and anxiety. Clients who combine in these treatments in one session will often experience relief almost immediately and often find long term relief with only a few sessions”, says Clare. How Massage and Acupuncture Work Together Many people suffering from chronic muscle spasms, migraines and acute pain find it difficult to withstand even the

The latest combined treatments that helps with depression, anxiety, acute pain and much more!

gentlest massage therapy treatments. These treatments are necessary to treat the pain at its source. The localised inflammation at the trouble spot increases the body’s pain response. This naturally makes the area painful to the touch, something many of us have experienced. Massages using fascial or reflexive techniques can help release muscle spasms, but getting to use these methods is tricky when the patient can scarcely handle being touched. Acupuncture operates off the body’s natural energy to restore your vitality and balance internal systems. In this process, it cools inflammation in the body and stimulates both the pleasure and pain centres of the brain. As this occurs, the injured body is better prepared for massage treatments.

First combined treatment is £55 which is 30-40 minute with Clare and Richard (total treatment time - 60–80min). Follow on combined treatments are then £75. Please call 01635 291211 to book your appointment.

The release of endorphins relaxes the body and the patient experiences enhanced pain tolerance and management. The Soft Tissue Therapist is then able to bypass the patient’s pain response and work on the underlying muscle tissue. Massage and acupuncture also work incredibly well for treating depression and anxiety. As acupuncture causes the release of endorphins, the patient starts to feel more euphoric and happy. Meanwhile, Soft Tissue Therapy lowers stress levels and provides touch therapy. Studies have highlighted both factors as helpful in reducing the symptoms of anxiety, depression and even insomnia. Patients begin to feel more balanced in no time.

Laughter

is the best medicine Where is your nearest comedy club? Current research suggests it's worth knowing where you can get a good laugh as it may improve your health. It’s good exercise

Laughter is like a good massage A good belly laugh relaxes the muscles for up to 45 minutes.

It lowers stress and wards off colds Stress hormones take a toll on our bodies making it difficult for us to fight off illness. Studies suggest that laughing not only reduces levels of these hormones, it boosts the immune system. So dig out those old episodes of Dad's Army!

It increases pain tolerance According to neuroscientist Robert Provine, pain reduction is one of the biggest benefits of laughter. Studies have proved that those who watch or experience comedic content are able to tolerate more pain, probably due to the release of hormones called endorphins.

Do animals laugh? It has been documented that some animals do indeed laugh. Research among dogs, rats, chimpanzees and other apes suggests that these species emit a unique sound in response to pleasure. You may have seen a horse making a strange expression where it curls its upper lip and bares its teeth into a wide grin. This makes the animal look like it’s laughing. Horses pull this amusing face in order to direct scents floating in the air toward special olfactory glands that are located at the end of the horse’s nasal passage. The lip-curling and the slight tilting of head help the animal direct smells toward these glands. The horse isn’t laughing at you, it’s just trying to determine whether you smell bad!

The body’s response to laughter is quite similar to the body’s response to exercise. After several seconds of laughter, your heart rate elevates. We don't recommend that lie about watching reruns of Seinfeld all day but as part of a healthy lifestyle comedy is a great addition.

It’s a heart-friendly activity Scientists at The University of Maryland determined that subjects with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in many situations compared to those without heart disease; and in fact were more prone to anger and hostility.

Julie - Oscar Pet

For more information or help to kick start a healthy eating regime why not give us a call (see advert below).

Clean my teeth, you must be joking Have you ever tried to clean your cats teeth, well if your cat is like our cat Lady Lulu then it’s impossible. Most of the time she is a quiet cat quite happy to sleep the day away. Try to get close to do anything like look in her mouth and boy she develops additional claws from nowhere, she can wriggle and squirm with the best of them. Before we purchased the Oscar franchise she was fed on a mix of wet and dry food, whenever she went to the vets for her annual injections the vet always mentioned that she was getting a buildup of plaque on her teeth, a risky and very expensive teeth clean by the vets seemed to becoming ever closer. But, then we bought the Oscar franchise and Lady Lulu became an Oscar cat, fed only on Oscar food and nothing else. Now the vet remarks on how healthy her teeth and gums are, so how did we achieve the small miracle?

Lady Lulu

Well, her food is coated with an ingredient called 'Stay Clean' this helps to combat this problem

Food

and reduce dental disease in our feline friends, OSCAR have added this ingredient to all of their Adult and Adult Care cat foods.

If you would like to know more, then drop our Cockerpoo Racso an email at www.racso.co.uk/contact and he will pass your question onto Lady Lulu who will be only too pleased to help.

So what is it? Stay Clean is a specialised source of vitamin C, which is activated when your cat breaks down the kibble in its mouth. The Stay Clean acts with the cat's saliva to help remove tartar and plaque build up. Studies have shown that Stay Clean helps to reduce the development of dental plaque and the formation of tartar.

Plaque fact Did you know that around 70% of cats develop dental disease by the time they are three years old? Research in the USA suggests that figure is closer to 80%. A staggering statistic, that could be reduced by just by feeding Oscar cat food. Did you also know that you can feed the average cat on our human grade standard, complete & balanced dried food for as little as £1.99 per week, yes only £1.99 - bargain. All this and delivered free to the door, plus free access to veterinary & nutritional advice from a team of experts.

It’s Only Natural... For head to tail nutrition we carefully choose the ingredients that go into your OSCAR Pet Food. To truly Optimise Nutrition - we only add supplements that are from a natural source and that are proven to be beneficial to your pet family’s health and well-being. Our supplements, vitamins and minerals are designed to specifically aid the immune system, digestion and to help your dog throughout all life-stages; from puppy to senior. Give us a call on

Blooming Baskets! It’s hanging basket season! They can be a source of delight but also a source of stress. It’s easy for a hanging basket to fail badly. Too sparsely filled and they look bedraggled. Too little water and death is swift! The secret to growing a successful basket lays both in the way it’s planted but also in sensible aftercare. Plant the basket with bedding plants at the beginning of May but don’t plant them out for a couple of weeks, especially if you live in a more exposed area. Instead give them some shelter in a porch, or unheated greenhouse, or even under polythene at the side of the house. This allows the new plants to grow and toughen up a little before they are hung in their final position.

plants such as lobelia, bidens and ivyleafed pelargoniums look lovely but you can be as creative as you like. Water the plants in their containers before planting them and squeeze the rootball firmly to make it small enough to push though the mesh from the outside. Plant quite densely and gradually build up layers of plants and soil. When it’s full to within 3 cm of the rim you can plant up the top with more upright, compact bushy plants like begonias, petunias and pelargoniums.

Check that your bracket and chains for signs of rust and also check that the bracket is securely fixed to the wall. Hanging baskets are extremely heavy, especially when they are wet and you really don’t want your lovinglyplanted orb of flowers to be deposited unceremoniously all over the floor! Planting is easiest if you balance the basket on a large flowerpot or bucket. Fibrous liners help to retain water and look nicer than polythene. For extra moisture retention place a circle of polythene in the base of the basket before filling with soil.

Make sure your basket never dries out. It will be reliant on you for all water and nutrition. If you water it at least once a day and feed with dilute tomato fertilizer once a week I promise it will be blooming basket in the best possible way.

The best planting medium is soilless multi-purpose compost, mixed with water-retaining granules. Place a layer of compost in the base of the basket and push the first layer of plants through. Trailing
