Outdoor sports facility booking goes online Booking an outdoor sports pitch in the borough will be even easier with the introduction of the new Open Play system on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s website. The online service has been launched ahead of the new football season and allows customers to book football pitches, rugby pitches, athletics track and field, netball courts, Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGA) and cricket pitches, at various locations within the borough. The system does not allow for Astroturf bookings as there is limited availability. Sports groups will be asked to pay in advance and any cancellations

made within the timescale will receive a voucher credit. Cabinet Member for Borough Development and Improvement Cllr Rebecca Bean said: “Bringing the sports facility booking system online will make it more convenient for our customers to book a pitch.

Pest Control Dealing with pests such as rats and mice. West Berkshire Council and Wokingham Borough Council no longer provide a pest control service, but we can assess cases on an individual basis.

An officer may carry out a survey of your property to confirm the source of an infestation. If the source is found to be on your property, you will be charged a fee.

We can:

If the source is found to be on a neighbouring property or from another source, you will not be charged for the survey.

Advise on preventative action and treatment

Take legal action where the landowner, landlord or those responsible don't address a pest problem Give you details of how to find a reliable pest control contractor who can help

6

Before you report an infestation, we recommend that you take the following steps to pest proof your property:

Remove any food and water sources from your property; such as bird

Ensure sheds, decking or other structures have a solid base, so pests cannot gain entry Cut back any overgrown climbing plants and trees to prevent access to buildings Ensure areas where you have other animals, such as chickens are managed so as not to attract vermin If you believe the infestation is on a neighbouring property, we recommend that you attempt to make contact and discuss the issue before reporting it. You can report an infestation using our our online form. We follow the CRRU Code of Practice, which means focussing on prevention of pests. Unnecessary use of poisons can result in a high level of resistance and may also be harmful to wildlife.

announce a new green energy initiative Following the declaration by West Berkshire Council of a climate emergency in July 2019, plans are being developed to help the area move away from fossil fuel usage and there will be a climate conference run by the council on 28th October to engage with local residents on these plans. In parallel, West Berkshire Climate Action Network in partnership with renewable energy installers IDDEA, will be offering a low cost solar energy scheme to all homeowners in the area. The scheme has seen success in the Somerset town of Frome and will be rolled out across Newbury, Thatcham and surrounding villages in the coming weeks. The renewable energy market has changed dramatically in the last 10 years and despite the end of the feed-in tariff on 31st March 2019, solar panels are still a viable green investment due to the massive reduction in installation cost. By combining logistics for multiple installations in the area, IDDEA will be offering significantly reduced pricing to residents. The new scheme will be introduced at information evenings at 7:30pm on 8th & 15th October at St Johns Church, Newbury & on 2nd October at Kennet School, Thatcham. The evening will guide residents through the process of installing solar panels and will also review new technologies available to homeowners to maximise the use of their panels. Billions in extra funding will

benefit North West Hampshire Schools

Kit Malthouse MP with local school children at a recent engineering fair

We want to push aspiration and make sure our children get access to good quality education, training, and ultimately rewarding careers. That’s why I’m pleased to tell you that £14 billion of new money over the next three years has been announced by the Prime Minister to benefit every school. Funding per pupil for all schools will rise at least in line with inflation next year, and actually faster than inflation for most. Every secondary school will receive a minimum of £5,000 per pupil and every primary school at least £3,750 per pupil. Additionally, 20 primary and secondary schools across North West Hampshire will particularly benefit from increases to at least the minimum pupil funding levels.Importantly, the investment also recognises teaching as a valued profession and will increase teacher starting salaries by up to £6,000. Support is also being increased for underperforming schools, and there will be an 11 per cent funding increase to help children with special educational needs and disabilities. Our schools in Kingsclere, Overton, Whitchurch and across North West Hampshire will benefit from this extra funding. More details will be available on my website, social media and podcast (The Maltcast, available on Apple iTunes and Spotify).A good life begins with a good education, and we are determined to build on our world-class education system.

Kit Malthouse MP Minister of State for Crime, Policing and the Fire Service at the Home Office.

The first Sunday in October has been designated as ‘Silver Sunday’, a day in the national calendar when we can celebrate older people. As someone approaching my seventh decade and also, rather unexpectedly, facing retirement (of a sort), I am delighted to support initiatives like this which place a real value on the latter years of life with all the wisdom, experience and perspective that they bring. The aim of the day is to offer opportunities for older folk to connect with the communities and generations around them, getting out and about, making new friends and learning new skills. There are around 800 free events on the website, silversunday.org. uk, three of them in our area, but it could also be as simple as inviting an elderly neighbour over for coffee or taking time to visit an older relative. A Berkshire-based company called Thingitude has been given a ‘Smart City’ grant to work with West Berks Public Health to look at the issues and impacts that slips, trips and falls have on the elderly, with the aim of helping people live independently for longer. Specialists in the ‘Internet of Things’, they will monitor 30 volunteers who have been identified as at risk of falling, via clever interventions such as ‘smart’ lighting and sensors to measure risk factors such as mobility, balance, room temperature, dehydration and activity levels. While this will not remove the need for effective and professional social care, it is an example of how technology can be used to help us meet the challenges of modern life at all ages and stages.

Hot chocolate was brewed already by the ancient mexicans and aztecs One of the most popular hot beverages in the world along with tea and coffee, especially in colder climates and Europe in particular. The Aztecs used to make their own version of it from cacao beans. It was a lot more bitter than ours though, since they didn’t add any sugar to it.

Some know that it comes from cacao, but even fewer know where cacao is grown and especially how it grows and how the beans are harvested. How to Lower your Blood Pressure with

Fresh parsley for garnish Method

Diet

High blood pressure is the number-one risk factor for death in the world and the lower, the better. The 140/90 cut-off you may have heard is arbitrary. Even people who start with blood pressures under 120/80 appear to benefit from blood pressure reduction. Your doctor would likely give you a gold star if you had a blood pressure of 120/80, but research indicates the ideal blood pressure may be 110/70. Is it even possible to get blood pressures as low as 110/70? It’s not just possible—it’s normal for those living healthy enough lives. Over two years, 1,800 patients were admitted to a rural Kenyan hospital. How many cases of high blood pressure were found? Zero. They had no rates of heart disease. Not a single case of our number-one killer, arteriosclerosis, was found. The same was found in rural China. There, people are about 110/70 their entire lives. Those in rural Asia and Africa traditionally ate vastly different diets, but they did share a commonality: Both were centred around plant foods. Why do we think it’s the plant-based nature of their diets that was so protective? In the Western world, as the American Heart Association has pointed out, the only people getting their blood pressures down that low were those eating strictly plant-based diets, coming in around 110/65. The largest study to date of people eating plant-based diets studied 89,000 Californians, ranging from vegan to non-vegetarians. They were Seventh-day Adventists, who all tended to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise, and not smoke (and even the nonvegetarians didn’t eat a lot of meat). There appeared to be a step-wise drop in hypertension rates as people ate more and more plant-based diets, with vegans having lower rates than lactoovo-vegetarians, who had lower rates than pesco-vegetarians, who had lower rates than flexitarians who had lower rates than those who ate meat on a daily basis. Yes, we can wipe out most of our risk by eating a strictly plant-based diet, but it’s not all-or-nothing. It isn’t blackor-white. Any movement we can make along the spectrum toward healthier

eating can accrue significant health benefits. This has been shown experimentally: Give vegetarians some meat (and pay them enough to eat it!), and their blood pressures go up. Remove meat and blood pressures go down—within 7 days. That’s the power of plants. For more, check out my video, How Not to Die from High Blood Pressure, on NutritionFacts. org.

VEGETABLE STACKS WITH TOMATO–RED PEPPER COULIS Makes: 4 Servings This dish is actually quite simple to make and looks fancy when plated. Perfect for when you want to impress your dining companion! 1 large eggplant, trimmed and cut into 4 round slices about ½-inch thick 1 large red onion, cut into 4 slices about ½-inch thick 1 large orange or yellow bell pepper, sides cut vertically to make 4 square pieces 4 large portobello mushroom caps, gills removed 1 or 2 large ripe tomatoes, cut into 4 slices about ½-inch thick 3 tablespoons minced red onion 2 plum tomatoes, chopped 2 roasted red bell peppers (see page 9, or store-bought) 1 teaspoon white miso paste 1 teaspoon dried basil ½ teaspoon dried thyme 1 ¼-inch piece fresh turmeric, grated (or ¼ teaspoon ground) Ground black pepper

with silicone mats or parchment paper. Arrange the eggplant slices in a single layer on one of the prepared baking sheets. Bake the eggplant until soft, turning once, about 15 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and set aside to cool; then remove the eggplant from the pan. On the second prepared baking sheet, arrange the onion slices in a single layer and bake for 7 to 8 minutes. Turn over the onion slices, place the bell pepper pieces on the same baking sheet as the onion, and roast until the vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes longer. Set aside to cool. Arrange the mushroom caps, gill side up, on the baking sheet from which the eggplant has been removed. Roast until softened, about 10 minutes.

2 Set aside to cool for a few minutes.

Lower the oven temperature to 350ºF. Assemble the roasted vegetables in stacks: To begin leave the four mushroom caps, gill side up, on their baking sheet. Top each cap with a slice of eggplant, followed by a slice of onion, then a bell pepper slice, topped with a slice of tomato. Cover the baking sheet and bake until the vegetables are hot, about 20 minutes.

3 While the vegetables are cooking,

make the sauce: In a skillet, heat 3 tablespoons of water over medium heat and add the minced onion. Cover and cook for 4 minutes, or until soft. Stir in the plum tomatoes, roasted bell peppers, miso, basil, thyme, turmeric, and black pepper to taste. Cover and cook until the vegetables are very soft, about 5 minutes longer. Transfer to a food processor and purée the sauce until smooth. Keep warm over low heat until ready to use.

4 When the stacks are ready, use

a metal spatula to carefully remove them from the baking dish. Place one stack in the center of each of four dinner plates. Top and surround each stack with the sauce and parsleygarnish, and serve hot.

tional Coffee day 7 8 9

Memorize a coffee quote My personal favourite is one from Honore de Balzac: “As soon as coffee is in your stomach, there is a general commotion. Ideas begin to move … similes arise, the paper is covered. Coffee is your ally and writing ceases to be a struggle.”

Energize the whole office Coffee is a social drink meant to be shared in the company of others. Boil a pot of fresh coffee for the entire office and serve it out individually. Be sure to ask each co-worker how they take their coffee— you'll learn a lot about them in the process!

Go on a coffee date Don't forget to support your local coffee shop on International

Coffee Day! Invite a friend, co-worker or family member to chat over a cup of coffee at a cafe. Bonus points if your conversation revolves around the joys of coffee.

Why we love International Coffee Day? Coffee is good for you That's right—coffee is good for your health (unless you dump four tablespoons of sugar in it)! Research shows that coffee drinkers are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and dementia than non coffee drinkers. Coffee drinkers also have lower incidence of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems and stroke. So drink away!

Coffee energizes you ... fast It only takes about 10 minutes to start feeling the effects of a cup of coffee, so you can go from "Mondays suck" to "Let's conquer the world" in record time. But pity the fool who has to be near you before those 10 minutes are up.

Coffee has History It became popular at the same time that Islam was on the rise. Muslims were banned from consuming alcohol, so for a while coffee was considered an acceptable substitute. In 1675, out of paranoia that people were convening in coffee houses to plot against him, King Charles II banned cafes in England! Today, thankfully, it's legal again so we can all keep get our java on.

The traditions and folklore of Halloween are a hybrid of Pagan, Celtic, Catholic and ancient Roman traditionsThe holiday is thought to date to the Iron Age (around 800-600 B.C.), when the Celts and Gauls ruled parts of Great Britain and Northern France. October 31 marks the last day of the Celtic calendar, and for Celtic-folklore believers, Halloween was a day of celebration before winter, which brought the death of life and nature, and the harvest. Similarly, Gaelic people believed it was important to honour the dead on what was, essentially, their New Year's celebration. They called the holiday Samhain, or the "summer's end" in Old Irish. When the Romans invaded Gaul (modern day France) and Britain in 1st century B.C., many of their festival traditions became mixed with those of Samhain. In particular, the ancient Roman festival of Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruits and 20

gardens, was held around November 1, and celebrated the apple harvest.

off spirits and honour the dead in European countries.

Scholars say that traditions from the darker Roman festivals of the dead called Parentalia and Feralia, (although held in February) were also incorporated as Halloween celebrations spread across Europe.

The British believed fire warded off evil spirits, so churches bought extra candles and held bonfires in graveyards. The Spanish visited graveyards and consecrated graves with holy water or milk. French monks took a less superstitious action on the day, sending prayers to saints.

In the Roman Catholic Church, All Saints' Day, which is also referred to as All Hallows or Hallowmas, is celebrated on November 1, and is a day for honouring saints and the recently departed. The traditions came to include practices to ward

The Irish, however, were really the first to start the tradition of trick-or-treating. Halloween reached America in the mid-19th century with the influx of Irish immigrants who brought their mix of

Many countries with a strong Catholic influence, such as Mexico, celebrate the holiday closer to how the Ancients did, with visits to cemeteries to bless the graves and send prayers.

The Irish were the first to start the tradition of trick-or-treating Samhain, Pomona and pagan traditions. Although the holiday clearly is derived from the church, Halloween has always been a sensitive subject in terms of religion. Some have argued Halloween is a ritual for devil worship, trying to find evidence of animal or human sacrifice in ancient traditions associated with the holiday.

However, the Christian Coalition declared in 1982 that Hallowmass or Samhain were not "satanic rituals." Today, the holiday has influence on many different countries around the world.

Emergency Services for the

Accidents and emergencies are all an unfortunate part of life. Thankfully they are rare but it is important to be prepared for when they do occur. In these situations the most urgent priority is to get everything working and back to normal. With our busy lives it can be difficult to find a reliable person to help you with minor repairs.

So, here are some tips to detect and prevent it: • Leaky appliances • Burst pipes • Blocked drains There are several ways to detect a leak within your home and it goes without saying that the earlier a leak is detected and dealt with, the less damage is done.

any major damage. • Do not turn off your central heating on completely. This will avoid pipe bursting in freezing conditions. • Draining your central heating.

Burst pipes and lagging Frozen water can easily crack pipes and water tanks, which are usually in the loft and can cause extensive damage to your home.

Here are some tips to help prevent frozen pipes:

Keep your home safe from winter damages:

• Inspect and lag your pipes and taps. Look out for leaks

• Cold weather can cause damages in your property, so it is worth protecting your home to prevent

• Insulate your loft and your water tank and pipes.

• Know where your stopcock is and make sure it’s in good condition. • If you are away for any period of time during the winter, there is a chance your pipes and any water in them will freeze, which could lead to them bursting. To try and prevent this, you could either set your heating to not fall below 14˚C or turn your water off completely and drain the pipes before you go away. Regularly check your pipework for signs of deterioration, cracking or bulging and if you notice any damp patches or bulging on your ceiling, investigate the cause as soon as possible. It is also wise to check in the cupboard under your sink for any signs of water, such as a small puddle under the join on a pipe, which could suggest a small leak. 23

Women at work! Is it time that OO7 put on a pair of heels?

In a recent interview, ex James Bond, Piers Brosnan, sparked debate after sharing his thoughts with regards to the future James Bond being played by a woman, he cited, ‘Get out of the way guys and put a woman up there, I think it would be exhilarating!’ This roused great controversy with fans sharing their disapproval towards such a dramatic shift in character. Is this controversy indicative of tensions surrounding gender roles in the workplace? Does our reticence to welcome a female OO7 prove that deeply entrenched gender boundaries are still in place when it comes to employment? For decades, OO7 has stood to epitomise absolute male prowess and vigour. His mysterious and conspicuous persona as a spy, and his robust strength when fighting made him both a figure of admiration for men and that of desire for women. Some have argued that society is simply not ready to accept women who assume tough and dominant roles. This societal reservation is perpetuated by the gender roles channelled through the media, such as a strong and powerful role like James Bond, being continued to be played by men. However, this is merely another instance of where ideals presented in the media are misconstrued as reflective of ideals in society. Though OO7 has been hitherto played solely by male actors, there are countless examples in both film and theatre of formidable women who have achieved great success in their career. This disputes the notion that women are professionally undermined by the media. A modern example of this is, The Devil Wears Prada, whereby Meryl Streep plays the relentlessly authoritative Editor in Chief of Runway magazine. Classic roles like James Bond are loved in film, but the character is undoubtedly intended for a man. The success of the character has the sole purpose of entertainment and this does not always need to be reflective of modern society to retain its value. As long as the media continues to create new roles for women, it is irrational for them to replace those that are meant for men. Successful and professional women are far from exempt within film and themedia, so no, its not time that OO7 put on some heels. It is perfectly aptto keep his feet firmly on the ground and allow other characters to embody the success of women!

Local

Recruit For many people, looking for a new job can be a very scary time. In general, people that are nervous with taking their next step in finding a new job are not alone. This is especially true if you have been working at the same company for many years or if you have been bringing up children and looking to return to work. No matter what your situation is, finding new work can be daunting even for the most confident people out there.

needed to succeed in your job search.

If you are planning to remain in the same town, ideally you should look for a local recruitment agency. They know the area, the local businesses, salary expectations and the sectors.

Below are 4 top benefits of why using a local recruitment company can boost your job-hunting efforts:

Why use a local recruitment agency to find a job? Using a good local recruitment agency will not only help put your mind at rest, but will also help you develop the skills

One key point to note, whichever recruitment agency you decide to work with make sure you have researched properly as some recruitment agencies are more focused on specific areas such as IT, sales, admin etc. This ensures that they adhere to the best recruitment practices and are thoroughly vetted and affiliated to a professional body.

Local knowledge 1

This knowledge is a real benefit. Local agencies will be able to pass first-hand knowledge on to you, matching you with the right company in a role that you will thrive and be happy in.

Independent local recruitment agency Dovetail Recruitment have 30 years of experience matching the best candidates to the right roles and have seen many changes during this time. Their top tips for your employment search include building, cultivating and utilising your network of contacts rather than relying solely on online applications. Also turn your attention to your online brand for example your LinkedIn profile – take advice from professionals to really sell yourself. Dovetail Recruitment Agency 01635 431000 www.dovetailhrs.co.uk

itment 2 They are first in the know

Having long lasting communications and relationships with many businesses, always first to hear about new job opportunities and vacancies as they arise. This allows them to help you get an interview even before the job is on the market.

3 A more efficient job search

If you are applying for tens of jobs daily, you may think that you are being super productive and maybe you are, however, here is the reality. If the jobs you are applying for aren’t relevant, you don’t have the experience or they are unrealistic, then you could be wasting your time. A good local recruitment agency should only put you forward for roles that are right for you. They will have a clear understanding of who you are and what you expect by knowing your

ambitions and what sort of working environment you will thrive in.

support 4 Preparation, and feedback

It is expected that an agency will find you the right job,as well as offer you advice and guidance with the application. Preparation for the interview, helping you understand and improve your skills and following up with you after you start your job is all part of working with a recruitment company. Finding a new role should be an exciting time for you as it is a new start and a new challenge. We suggest that you still do your own job research and use your local recruitment agency to give you the maximum chance to find your next perfect role. Good luck!

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY – THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) allow people to choose one or more people they trust to make decisions on their behalf if something happens and they are unable to make decisions for themselves. LPA’s are as important as having a Will for ensuring your wishes are followed, but . . . • You know you are getting older, but in lots of ways, ‘I’ve closed my eyes to it’ ¹ • All I know is that I have a lasting power of attorney now . . . and I wish my mother had had it’ ¹ The Office for National Statistics 1st Century Mortality study found that the most common cause of death in 2016 was Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease ² There are 2 types of Lasting Power of Attorney, one for Health and Welfare and one for Property and Financial Affairs. Preparing for the 100-year life Rising longevity is a big challenge facing our society, but one that can be managed with foresight and planning. People are already considering working past the traditional retirement ages. For the first time there are more than 10 million people aged over 50 in employment and with the State Pension age rising, the number of older workers is expected to keep growing. Hidden within the life expectancy puzzle is the fact that our longer lives won’t necessarily be all in good health. This needs to be taken into account when preparing for the 100-year life. “If we could be retired for upwards of 30 years, then it is reasonable to assume our circumstances could change,” says Tony Clark, Head of Retirement Marketing at St. James’s Place. “You could find your spending increases as you transition into retirement, then decreases as you

YEARS

become less active, and then eventually increases again with a potential need for care provision in later life.” Given the requirement for a predictable income over an uncertain timespan, it may be tempting to invest in a low-risk portfolio. But if you’re taking out 4% to 5% of your investment portfolio annually, it’s questionable whether you would generate enough returns to maintain your living standards for 30 years or more. “You will likely need a portfolio that is designed to both grow and preserve your capital for the longer term, as well as utilising funds that specifically cater for income purposes,” says Clark. “Finding the right mix that is specific to your views on risk is where a financial adviser comes in. They will do the heavy lifting when it comes to portfolio management.”

Retirement requires careful planning in order to balance the financial and the non-financial, the economic and the emotional. While money isn't everything, knowing you’ll be able to meet your basic needs – with enough left over to realise your retirement ambitions – is something well worth planning for. Please give me a call on 07767 081051 or email andrew.street@ sjpp.co.uk or visit my website www. andrewstreetwm.co.uk if you would like to discuss any aspect of this further. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and relief from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.

Running for our 4th year, this is the place to be – an opportunity for businesses and charities to get together and enjoy valuable networking, share ideas and the opportunity to re-connect or meet new faces, with wonderful catering and the return of our exhibition, it promises to be a fantastic evening!
