Your Local Buzz Significant protection made by flu vaccinations The annual flu report published by Public Health England reports that influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was the main strain circulating in the 2018/19 season, although influenza A(H3N2) also circulated later on. Low to moderate levels of flu activity were seen in the community, although impact on secondary care in terms of hospitalisations and intensive care unit admissions was high. The report shows that the flu vaccine offered to those eligible for immunisation this season reduced the

likelihood of visiting the GP because of flu by approximately 44%. Flu is known to particularly affect older people as they tend to have weaker immune systems. The adjuvanted vaccine, which was given to the majority of adults aged 65 and over for the first time this season, was estimated to have provided approximately 60% protection against the flu strains circulating last winter. More children also took up the offer of the flu vaccine last winter than ever before, with around three million being

vaccinated. As younger children have poorer hand and respiratory hygiene than adults, they tend to spread flu more easily, so vaccinating children, protects not only them, but also other vulnerable groups around them. Next season, all children up to the age of 10 years will be offered the nasal spray vaccine which means that all children in primary school will be eligible across the whole of the UK.

Issues West Berkshire Council has adopted its Council Strategy for 2019-2023 West Berkshire Council Strategy 20192023 is produced every four years to align with the electoral cycle and refreshed every other year. The last Strategy was adopted in 2015, so a new one was needed to cover the period 2019-2023. It explains what the council plan to prioritise and improve over the next four years 6

and on the long term journey to 2036 and shows six important areas for improvement. The journey is set out in the new West Berkshire Vision 2036, a shared vision for the future, which was developed by the partners of the Health and Wellbeing Board to create ambition for the entire district rather than one organisation. It also sets out how they aim to achieve

these improvements while continuing to deliver the services that residents expect such as emptying the bins, fixing potholes, safeguarding vulnerable children and providing care for older people. Entitled 'Building on our strengths' the Strategy directly responds to the views of residents and provides a robust plan equipped to deal with the changing face of West Berkshire and the wider issues may impact on the district.

Listening to your priorities

They were installed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to encourage the use of greener forms of transport and to reduce local carbon emissions. The new chargers are used primarily by staff and visitors at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and there are opportunities for the public to charge their electric cars during evenings and weekends. The charger in Eastlands is open for all to use during the weekend, and the charger on the upper floor of Parklands can be used by the public from 7pm until 8am and throughout the weekend (normal parking fees apply). Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “With increasing use of electric and hybrid cars, there is now more demand for electric charge points and the council is pleased to support this. “We want to encourage residents and visitors to use greener forms of transport and keep our air clean and want our staff to lead the way. “We will continue to work to reduce local carbon emissions and explore opportunities to promote more sustainable ways to travel.” The scheme forms part of a wider council drive to reduce carbon emissions, with the ongoing Clean Air Basingstoke and Deane campaign focused on maintaining good local air quality. For more information about the campaign, visit www.basingstoke.gov. uk/clean-air

Target achieved It’s official: we have one of the best community hospitals in the country. At least according to the trustees of the amazing Rosemary Appeal who have seen their target of £5.4 million exceeded and with an understandable mixture of pride and relief, the announcement that the appeal is closed.

Council plans to reduce emissions Five new points have been introduced in Eastlands and Parklands car parks, joining existing charging points in Central car park and Churchill Way car park and bringing the total number to seven.

Richard Benyon MP

My recent poll for North West Hampshire received hundreds of responses, and you said that improving local roads, cutting crime and reviving high streets are your top priorities. Some three-quarters of respondents (73 per cent) chose improving roads and transport as a main priority. I’m pleased to say that last year our county council filled in more than 20,000 potholes and resurfaced 5.2km of roads. The government has also made £420m available to local authorities to invest in fixing and repairing our roads and as your MP I will continue to fight for our fair share of investment. Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of you told me that cutting crime is vital. In Hampshire, the police have a potential budget increase of £25m thanks to a big increase in police funding nationally.

It has taken under four years to raise this remarkable sum and the result for residents of West Berkshire is that there is now a state of the art cancer unit and dialysis unit at the West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham, fully operational, staffed and run by the NHS, on our doorstep.

So many people have donated to the appeal, running marathons, holding cake sales, sports tournaments, bike rides and race nights, along with generous support from the Greenham Trust.

I recently met with our Police and Crime Commissioner and our local Chief Superintendent and together we are determined to cut crime in our communities. And more than half of you (55 per cent) want our High Streets revived as an urgent priority. Thankfully the government is further cutting rates for small businesses which will see savings of up to £8,000 per annum for the majority of our pubs, shops and cafes. Find out the full polling results on www.kitmalthouse.com.

Kit Malthouse MP Minister for Housing and Planning in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

The trustees have expressed their congratulations to the local community for this fantastic achievement; we, in turn, can only respond with enormous thanks for their vision, their tenacity, their courage and their determination to see it through.

BERRY CHOCOLATE CHIA PUDDING Adapted from The How Not to Die Cookbook Makes: 4 ( ¼ Cup) Servings

What Happens if You Add Milk to Tea? Our endothelium is the inner lining of our blood vessels that controls the function of our arteries and appears to play a key role in disorders and disease. We used to think that its ability to function decreased as we aged, thanks to the cells shedding and being replaced by weaker ones every 30 years. However, researchers did not see this progressive decline in a Chinese population studied. The Chinese subjects in their 60s had the arterial function of young folks in their 20s. “These data suggest that progressive endothelial dysfunction is not an inevitable consequence of aging but might be related to prolonged exposure to environmental factors more prevalent in westernized countries than in China.” What could it be? Traditional Chinese diets include green tea, which has been shown to have a beneficial effect on endothelial function within 30 minutes of consumption, lasting about two hours. It wasn’t the caffeine, which alone had no effect. They suspect it was the

flavonoid phytonutrients in the leaves. Black tea appears to work about just as well as green tea, so then why is green tea associated with lower heart disease risk while black tea is not? In fact, in two British studies, tea consumption was associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease. Maybe it’s because Brits commonly drink their tea with milk, whereas green tea is typically drank straight? If only there were a country that drank black tea, but without milk… And there is: the Netherlands. In those studies, black tea was associated with the same drop in risk as the green tea studies. So, maybe it is the milk. But you can’t really know until you put it to the test. A 2007 study published in the European Heart Journal found the “addition of milk to black tea completely prevents the biological activity of tea in terms of improvement of endothelial function.” So to get the full health-benefits of tea, you may want to leave out the milk.

Local Buzz is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, author and professional speaker on public health issues to share his blogs in every issue. He focuses on the best available balance of evidence from the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Blueberries

An excellent source of vitamins C and K, manganese and source of fiber

These are not only popular, but constantly rank near the top in terms of their antioxidant capacities among all fruits, vegetables, spices and seasonings. Studies suggest that blueberries may reduce memory decline, may reduce heart attack and lower risk factors for cardiovascular disease and may provide other anti-aging benefits.

Raspberries Among the highest fiber-containing foods, with up to 20% fiber per total weight. They are also a great source of vitamin C, manganese, B vitamins 1–3, folic acid, magnesium, copper and iron. As for the antioxidants, raspberries contain the all-important anthocyanins.

Cranberries Like many other berries, cranberries also contain antioxidant polyphenols. However, most of these antioxidants are in the skin of the cranberry. Cranberry juice has also shown various benefits for heart health. Many studies have found that drinking cranberry juice can reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, oxidative stress and “stiffness of arteries.

The best-known health benefit of cranberries is reducing urinary tract infections.

ine

FOOD Summer s e i r r Be Berries are small, soft, round fruit of various colours mainly blue, red or purple. Berries tend to have a good nutritional profile and are typically high in fiber, vitamin C and antioxidant polyphenols.

Bilberries are effective at reducing inflammation

Bilberries Bilberries are very similar to blueberries, and the two are often confused. Bilberries are native to Europe, whereas blueberries are native to North America. A couple of studies have shown that eating bilberries or drinking bilberry juice can reduce inflammation in people at risk of heart disease or metabolic syndrome.

Strawberries Strawberries are good for heart health. In fact, a study of over 93,000 women found that those who ate more than three portions of strawberries and blueberries per week had over a 30% lower risk of a heart attack. Moreover, strawberries may help control blood sugar levels, which is important for preventing diabetes.

Swings & Smiles provides children with special needs and their whole family the opportunity to spend quality time together in a unique environment where they can all feel supported.

Support, friendship & play for children with special needs and their families Swings & Smiles was set up as a charity in 2007 by Sian Cook, whose daughter Amy gave her the inspiration to provide children with special needs and disabilities a place that they would be able to play together with their families. Today the charity operates from their centre in Thatcham and has supported over 530 families since opening the doors in 2014. Swings & Smiles offers play sessions for children with disabilities or special needs. They can take part in general or sensory play, cooking activities, arts and crafts, sport and much more. The centre is fully accessible with a brilliant garden including a wheelchair accessible swing, trampoline and slide alongside space to have a picnic.

There are three fun-filled sessions a month dedicated to children who have a sibling with special needs. This is a great opportunity for siblings to meet other children who understand their situation. In 2018, Swings & Smiles supported 800 siblings through these sessions as well as a five week sibling support course which they run in schools. As well as everything else on offer Swings & Smiles also delivers sessions in the community. The joy of Swings & Smiles gets taken out and about to schools, groups and individuals and those who may not be able to make it to the centre. Since they started in 2015, these outreach sessions have supported over 500 children with special needs and disabilities to enjoy play. Swings & Smiles hopes to continue to grow and support even more families who need them. The charity relies on fundraising to continue running their services and if you’d like to support them by donating, fundraising for them or by volunteering then they’d love to hear from you.

If you’re interested in visiting Swings & Smiles or would like to find out more, you can visit their website www. swingsandsmiles.co.uk or get in touch on 01635 285170 or office@ swingsandsmiles.co.uk.

Pamper Holiday

Summer is the perfect time to pamper yourself!

Even if you have used up all your vacation days, you can still pamper yourself this summer and here are some simple ways:

1

Embrace your vacation look

Some people say that going on vacation is just a frame of mind. If you are not going on vacation this summer, you can easily embrace the lifestyle and look. Think beach beauty. Use a sunscreen that leaves you feeling pampered and hydrated, and then give your hair the ultimate beach-curl look.

2

Score a last-minute deal to a local hotel You can easily escape for a few hours using apps that help you score last minute deals to local hotels. Try DayUse.com or Hotel Tonight. To really pamper yourself, make sure the hotel has a spa or swimming pool. Then stock up on some magazines and relax.

3

Take a yoga class

While you can do yoga anytime indoors, why not take a yoga class outdoors and take advantage of the summer months. Soak up all the sun and just relax. The great thing about doing yoga outdoors is that you don't even need a yoga mat, but you do need sunscreen!

4

Buy some flowers and plants

Enjoy the beautiful outdoors and buy yourself some flowers and plants, for your office with them. Be sure to set some flowers right next to your computer so you get a delightful summery holiday feel

when you are reading and writing emails.

5

Schedule a DIY spa day

A spa day and bath oils, candles, music, masks and lotions. Make your own face masks using all natural ingredients found right in your fridge, such as avocados and eggs. Soak in a tub while drinking wine and relaxing, then give yourself a manicure.

6

Enjoy the beautiful outside

There is no better way to embrace summer than by hanging outside all afternoon. Grab a blanket, a good book, some mineral water, snacks and you are all set to go. Soak up the sun and chill, but do remember your suncream. 21

Vintage

& Classic Cars

What is the difference between a classic and vintage car? Vintage Cars Before the First World War, cars were considered to be a luxury - owned by the prosperous and fortunate, but by the end of the era, as the Great Depression took its grip, the motor car had ensconced itself as a necessity and everyday accessory in any given part of the civilised world. The vintage era is so significant to the history of the automobile, as it saw some of the most radical mechanical and stylistic changes. In the UK in particular, there was a significant cross-over in

Water pollution

prevention

August is the time when many people are enjoying their last days of summer’s recreational activities involving water, but these bodies of water are threatened by increasing water pollution.

What can individuals and families do to prevent water pollution within their homes especially during Water Quality Month? Here is a short list of things that you can do at home to help: • Not using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products. Regular soap and water will do the trick. Much of the antibacterial soaps contain a registered pesticide that is known to harm marine life.

h

• Choose nontoxic household products when possible. • Pick up after pets. • Not paving properties.

• Not putting anything but water down storm drains because they carry water to local waterways.

• If you have a private well, make sure it is tested and cleaned regularly. There can be bacteria build up in wells.

• Fixing leaks that drop from cars and putting liners in driveways to collect oil and other materials.

• Read your local water quality report so you know what the water quality is in your area.

• Avoid using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Another option could be to gather a group of family friends, neighbours and volunteers to clean a local

Water Quality

h t n o M

I have been passionate about water quality for most of my life. I started Basingstoke Softeners 30 years ago and all of us in the business are proud to be recognised as a foremost provider of water treatment products in this area. As a local family business we are proud of our reputation. Water pollution is now headline news but we have been addressing it for years. Our small yet efficient water softeners require no electricity. In households where they are fitted they lead to a reduction of over 50% in the use of phosphates, detergents and chemical cleaners. In addition limescale around heat exchangers reduces the efficiency of heat transfer and consequently more energy is required. We guarantee that our water softeners will remove limescale from heat exchangers thus improving efficiency, cutting CO2 emissions AND saving money. Appliances and showers are known to last longer with soft water so the need for replacement is less frequent. There is no need to use descalers and harsh chemical cleaners when you have soft water in your home and products such as shower gels, shampoos and washing detergents are very effective in much smaller quantities. The result is a

significant reduction in chemicals going down the drain.

need to buy plastic bottles in order to drink clean water.

As an added bonus surfaces stay spotlessly clean as there is no scale and scum build up, so much less time (and effort) is needed to keep your kitchen and bathroom sparkling.

While it is true that you have to put salt in your water softener, salt is much less harmful to the environment than most chemical products and as far back as the 80’s Ecover, a leading campaigner and producer of eco-friendly products, recognised the environmental benefits of domestic water softeners.

Getting exam results is a big deal for your teen. It is essential to understand the options available so that you can be ready to support them on the day. Whether they have just missed the mark or exceeded their own expectations, there are many ways to access further education. Some young people may choose to stay at school, but did you know that they could earn UCAS points in vocational courses, in the same way as an A Level? In fact, one in four students studying a BTEC Level 3 qualification goes on to study at University, with others gaining meaningful employment in their chosen career. Some may choose to pursue an apprenticeship, a work-based qualification that combines employment with technical training. Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of professions, from traditional areas such as engineering,

Higher Apprenticeships go up to Master’s Degree level, and Newbury College is working in partnership with Buckinghamshire New University to provide these innovative programmes. COPPER TOXICITY - ARE YOU AT RISK? This modern day epidemic causes chronic fatigue, insomnia, mood changes, irritability, paranoia, depression, anxiety, irrational behaviour and even emotional numbing. Copper toxicity is a prominent yet virtually unrecognised issue in today’s society. Traditionally thought to be of benefit to the body but recent studies have shown an excess of copper to be one of the most toxic minerals both physically and psychologically. • Do you love chocolate? • Do you enjoy avocados? • Are you vegetarian, vegan, or eat a heavily vegetable based diet?

• Are you on the birth control pill or copper IUD? • Do you work with copper? • Do you have copper piping in your house?

The most comprehensive testing for copper toxicity can be done by using hair samples. At the Maas Clinic we create an individualized mineral supplement program to safely remove the copper toxins from the body which will benefit both your physical and mental health.

Contact us today for more information on 01730 719 009 or visit www.themaasclinic.com

All of the above can be major contributors to an overload of copper in the system.

BUSINESS

What is workplace wellbeing and how do you put it into practice? Fiona Curnow, Marketing Director You’ve probably heard the buzz around ‘Workplace Wellbeing’ but what does it mean if you are an employer? At Gardner Leader, we believe what is good for our valued employees is good for business and that staff engagement contributes to the excellent client service we pride ourselves on. We carry out annual Employee Engagement Surveys and findings are presented by our Managing Partner, along with an outline of actions implemented and to be considered. Our Wellbeing Group is comprised of individuals from across the firm with a range of related interests. The group looks at all aspects of wellbeing including social, environmental, food, finance, fitness, mental health, community engagement and CSR. The group organises activities, signposts relevant information and arranges training that helps at home as well as at work, such as recent training on becoming a Dementia Friend. Two Wellbeing Champions focus on issues relating to mental health and offer employees time and space for confidential conversations about any issues, regardless of whether they are workrelated. In addition, we have recently signed up to the ‘Where’s your head at?’ Workplace Manifesto promoted by MHFA England. As a law firm, we give clients peace of mind about legal issues - we also want our employees to have peace of mind they can bring their ‘whole selves’ to work and ask for support when needed. Workplace Wellbeing is something we are committed to and will continue to invest in. Let us know if you’d like to share ideas about how you can promote workplace wellbeing in your organisation.
