2019 Commemorative Air Force Photo (CAF) Photo Contest

Page 1

The International Society for Aviation Photography is pleased to announce that the 2019 Commemorative Air Force Photo (CAF) contest will be opened to ISAP members, as well as to members of CAF. CAF’s members photograph people, planes, and their events throughout the year. The Commemorative Air Force hosts many events across the country and recognizes that many ISAP members share the same love of aviation through their photography. As a result, the CAF has taken the unusual step of inviting interested ISAP members to participate in the contest and enter some of the great photography they may have taken of CAF aircraft or at CAF events. As always ISAP encourages its members to carefully consider the rules of any contest they consider entering. Although the rules of the CAF contest may sound like a “rights grab,” CAF worked with ISAP on some changes, and the organization understands ISAP’s concerns surrounding image rights and will be working with ISAP to develop fair, more photographerfriendly rules in the future. Under the rules, all photos submitted to the contest by CAF members and ISAP members may be used in the future to promote the Commemorative Air Force. These photos help to document CAF’s efforts and tell the organization’s story—the hard work on the ramp, vintage aircraft in flight, and the audience reacting at CAF airshows and engaging with CAF members are essential. Images will be used primarily in CAF’s magazine, The Dispatch, both in print and online, and in social media. The contest rules also give ISAP the ability to use contest images. ISAP will use these images only in its ISnAP digital magazine, on the ISAP website, and in social media in its reporting of the contest. The rules do not give third parties rights to use images entered in the contest, and ISAP members who have worked with CAF in the past say that the organization is great about relaying requests from such third parties as other magazines and video producers to the photographer involved, so that he or she can negotiate a usage agreement. CAF and ISAP are working to build a relationship between the organizations that will allow them to work together at events in the future, showcasing ISAP members’ knowledge and exploring ways to help everyone who loves aviation photography to become better photographers.

GETTING THE SHOT THE CAF WORKS WITH INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHY The CAF has always depended on individuals who volunteer their time and talents- pilots, mechanics, business executives, and engineers spend numerous hours restoring and maintaining the Ghost Squadron, executing revenue rides, managing airshows, and more. Among the cadre of volunteers is our media volunteers. This person may be the Public information officer (PIO), webmaster, Facebook Admin, Newsletter Editor or perhaps all of the above. Communication is an important assignment in the CAF, now more than ever. Communication is instant, so being on top of the messaging ensuring information is accurate and content is interesting and effective is key. The people who are responsible for sharing the mission of the CAF with fellow members and the public, is crucial. 14

Photographers are often called upon to help document our efforts and tell our CAF story. Their hard work on the ramp, shooting the aircraft flying, the people reacting to our airshows, and engaging with our members is essential. It is because of their efforts magazines and social media are filled with snapshots of kids touring aircraft, breathtaking images of warbirds in flight, and photos of the look in a veteran’s eyes when they take a seat back in time. The CAF is very fortunate to have several esteemed professional photographers among our members who shoot events, air-to-air missions and more. Another organization these photographers are often affiliated with is the International Society for Aviation Photography (ISAP). ISAP is a non-profit organization with members living all over the world. Its membership spans the entire spectrum of aviation and aerospace photography. Founded in 2001, it includes fulltime professional photographers, videographers, graphic artists, writers, historians, editors, publishers, trade organizations, pilots, and serious enthusiasts. ISAP’s mission is to bring together people with a common love of aviation who look to preserve its history through their images. ISAP members seek to enhance artistic quality, advance technical knowledge, and improve safety for all areas of aviation photography while fostering professionalism, high ethical standards, and camaraderie. ISAP offers its members an opportunity to learn from some of the most talented aviation photographers in the world, to become familiar with new photographic software and hardware, and perhaps most importantly, to develop and renew lasting friendships. This year the CAF and ISAP will hold the CAF’s annual photo contest together. “We are excited to have such a valued society play a role in this year’s photo contest,” said CAF Vice President of Marketing Leah Block. “I think it is important to acknowledge the role photographers and videographers do to support the CAF. “ISAP is a terrific resource for aviation photographers, providing resources from ‘aviation event posting’s to ‘safety on the flightline’ information,” ISAP President Larry Grace said. “For years our organizations have supported each other. I’m excited about this

opportunity so we can highlight and promote each other publicly. We look forward with working with the CAF and participating in many more events and projects in the future.” This year, all categories will be split into professional and amateur photographers, will be open to both CAF members and ISAP members to participate, and a new category for non-CAF aircraft will be added.

MORE INFORMATION Photographers both professional and non-professional are encouraged to send their great shots to media@cafhq.org. If you are a professional photographer and are able to cover the CAF’s participation in a major aviation event, letters of assignment can be issued.
