Connect, support, promote Caoimhe Doherty reports on the exciting progress made by Ireland’s racehorse retraining project Treo Eile FEBRUARY 20TH 2021, It was only nine months ago. On February 20, 2021, www.treoeile.com went live. It is incredible, and also hugely encouraging, to see all that has been achieved since we launched. To think of all that might come next is wonderfully exciting. Treo Eile started simply as a website, a one-stop shop for people who needed to know more about rehoming a racehorse. The need for this information, and much more besides, led us to quickly develop and expand on our three main aims – to connect, support and promote. We wanted to connect the owners of ex-racehorses with potential new owners and re-trainers; we wanted to support those already in the field with sponsored classes

and prize-money for the best-placed thoroughbred; and we wanted to promote the success of thoroughbreds in their alternative careers. Connect, support and promote - far from complicated but, we think, extremely effective. So far, €15,000 has been spent in sponsorship across 20 different events, including cash prizes for the top-performing thoroughbred at the Dressage Ireland and Eventing Ireland National Championships, showing classes, polo tournaments and Derby jumping prizes. No less than 150 ex-racehorses are now registered with Treo Eile and living satisfying lives. Some are companions and leisure horses, others are climbing the competitive ranks of Irish eventing and dressage.

Those numbers are important, every single one of them. These are 150 horses we previously knew nothing about. In the future, Treo Eile can continue to play a vital role in improving the traceability of Irish thoroughbreds once they leave racing.

Since our launch we have put together a vibrant and dynamic board of members to ensure all of us at Treo Eile do the best we possibly can for our industry. It has never been so important for racing to be on the leading leg in terms of horse welfare and after care. We have a simple plan that incentivises and creates opportunities for ex-racehorses in Ireland, whilst also supplying key information on welfare, after care and end-of-life decisions. There is no longer any justifiable excuse for any owner to make a misinformed decision when it comes to life after racing. It is thanks to our generous sponsors that we have been able to achieve so much in such a short space of time. Special thanks must go to Godolphin and Joe Osborne, who have embraced our idea since inception and played a crucial part in helping establish Treo Eile. There is, however, no time to rest on our laurels. We must continue to do more. With that in mind, Treo Eile has plans to widen the market for ex-racehorses and create more opportunities through increased sponsorships and prize-money across all equestrian disciplines. We are working on developing a Treo Eile ‘best practice’ code, along with a safe and secure advertising portal for trading ex-racehorses. Although the cases are few and far between, we also aim to develop a protocol for vulnerable horses. Tonight is a celebration of the racehorse. We are rejoicing in their versatility and the many opportunities open to them once the days of racing are over. Funds raised tonight will go towards ensuring a better life for horses after racing and a stronger programme to cater for them here in Ireland. Thank you for attending and we look forward to your continued support in the future.

Talking

thoroughbreds Sweet Wall Eventing's Lucca Stubington tells us about her 5* horse Quingenti S.S.: How did you acquire Quingenti? L.S.: We bought Quingenti from his breeder John Kidd. He went to Tattersalls and he didn’t sell, so they brought him home. He was a very small four-year-old, only 15.1hh and he was also quite nasty... but we bought a beautiful horse anyway! Then he started to grow. He wasn’t the most talented to start with, but we just kept going because no one else really wanted him. Now he has gone on to compete in three National Championships and he has just jumped clear cross-country within the time at advanced level. When did you identify his talent? It wasn’t until he was eight that he won his first National Championships. After that he won at Bicton in the long format. He is just special - my pet, no one else touches him at home, they all know he is mine! Is Quingenti the reason you now have bred since to September Storm? I wasn’t particularly familiar with the stallion at the time; Quingenti was just a beautiful horse and we all really liked him. Since we’ve had him though, we have kept track of the stallion and all of the horses by him are performing well. I have three of them at home and they are all class. September Storm, a full-brother to Shirocco, is now with Liam Lynskey in Mayo. He used to just cover thoroughbreds, but now he is covering sport horse mares as well. As breeder of Florida Pearl, Sweet Wall is familiar with thoroughbreds - are there any quirks that come with riding them? I like thoroughbreds. The show jumping can be slightly nerve-racking, but I particularly enjoy cross country when you’re getting to your last minute and there is still gas in the tank. Same thing when you’re competing long format and you get to the cross country. It’s tough going but they’re still thinking, they’re still switched on and when you say go, they go! I’ve ridden a lot of ex-racehorses, and their pros definitely outweigh their cons. Why is show jumping perceived to be an issue? I think it’s because they are bred to “go”. When you put them into a small arena, they need to contain themselves and add more bounce to their canter. Some cope better than others. A lot of

10

www.treoeile.com

Lucca Stubington trots up Quingenti

people ask me if Quingenti is German-bred because of the way he moves and the way he jumps in the arena, he is a real showman. Of my others, September Son, also by September Storm, cannot cope with a show jumping jump-off, however if someone told me I had to go and ride a five-star tomorrow, I would pick him. I do a lot of schooling. It’s like being a therapist, you have to work out their sensitivities and the way they are made. It’s like teaching children, you can’t treat them all in the same way. There seems to be more people retraining thoroughbreds now, do you see it continuing? I feel like once people have done it once, they figure out how trusting and loving ex-racehorses are. It’s great to see people give them a chance, and is an efficient way to buy. I mean we bought Quingenti for €500 at the sales, and look where he has taken me. If people give them a chance, they’d see they are beautifully broken and many are beautifully produced. I recently saw a horse at Cheltenham heading to the start and he was doing the most beautiful extended trot – I would love to have that horse today! Are there yards you follow that are particularly good at breaking and producing? I have recently bought from the Crawfords and Ben was involved in the education; the team there is brilliant at producing a horse and have had a lot of luck re-homing for this reason. It makes our lives easier when they go on to their next career, they are already half-way there. Is there any advice you would give to someone retraining? Just take your time and do it your own way. Be happy just to tinker away with them; you might have them for six months just playing away, building their trust and that is just fine. Some will be at a show in a few weeks, but others can take longer. Neither is right or wrong. Listen to the individual and don’t feel any pressure. Some of mine might be six or seven before they get to an event and it doesn’t matter, it’s completely up to them, the individual.

Supporting the thoroughbred A hive of activity through the summer

A

FTER AN INTERRUPTED SPRING due to restrictions, the calendar began in earnest and seemed to be packed tightly during the summer months. Our early objectives for Treo Eile incentives has been to keep it simple, working with venues and organisations to add ‘Best Placed Thoroughbred’ prizes in each class or category, rather than running our own shows. Prizes, usually around the €150 mark, were awarded across the country at different levels from grassroots to National Championships. We also sponsored some polo and polocrosse events, awarding ‘Best Playing Thoroughbreds’ in club tournaments. Our National awards were prestigious and included rugs and rosettes, which helped with brand building and publicity for the organisation. Much of our promotion was in a social capacity, keeping costs to a minimum, but we were fortunate to receive some racecourse support and leant our name to races at Naas, Navan, Leopardstown, Fairyhouse, Cork, Listowel and Limerick. This resulted in increased promotion across the racing press and on Racing TV, and also included a race-card advert and various competitions which helped us increase our social followers. Coverage has also been good in the media with features on the Trainer's website, in the Irish Field and International Thoroughbred magazine. At the Listowel Festival a ‘Tinder’ interview with Patrick Mullins on TG4 worked brilliantly and recently a spot on RTE news also put us in the spotlight. RTE's Ear To The Ground covered us last weekend with a preview of tonight’s event and interview with Willie Mullins, who is a an old hand at finding new homes for his former charges. Next year we plan to bolster our programme of events and will work with Eventing Ireland (in which there are 70 thoroughbreds competing), the Association of Irish Riding Clubs (400 thoroughbreds registered) and Dressage Ireland, who offer a year's free membership to thoroughbreds. Conversations with Show Jumping Ireland will also be interesting after tonight! We look forward to working together to create opportunities for this versatile breed.

The Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic with Horse Racing Ireland THE COMPETITION Show jumping is one of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines, along with eventing and dressage. The idea is to test the ability of a horse to jump over a course of fences at a predetermined pace. Heights can vary from 80cm up to 1.60m for international championships. Tonight’s fences are set at a sensible 90cms. The majority of horses are seasoned performers, but for those at the start of their retraining, the fences will be inviting whilst also not too intimidating for our riders! There is a perception that thoroughbreds are bred and trained for speed and that show jumping can often catch them out as the technicality increases. However, if a horse is careful there is nothing to stop it progressing and amongst the teams are many accomplished jumpers with records up 1.30m. Other challenges such as distances between fences, decorations or even the atmosphere in the arena can affect performance. All of this is trainable, but it will be interesting to watch how this group of thoroughbreds perform. THE TEAMS Each team, named after famous racehorses, includes four riders. The three thoroughbreds on the team will be ridden by a jockey (past or present), and two professional riders. The fourth team member is a young rider on a pony. Teams will compete as a group 1-4. Our polished professionals will undoubtedly have their horses tuned up, whilst our jockeys - who have been kindly lent mounts - will mostly be sitting on these horses for the first time, making for a fascinating competition. The fastest competitors will be the array of young Irish riders, who are armed with some of the country’s best ponies – don’t blink or you’ll miss them! SCORING Whilst performance is fundamental, the fun part is called the “jump off”. Horses will jump the first half of the course at a sensible pace of their choosing, but the second half of the course will be timed. So the faster they complete that section the higher the team score. Knock down / refusal: four faults | Three refusals at one fence: elimination The combined score of the each team member is added together, then the times of the second half are brought into play – the fastest team will be the winning team. Course Builder: Geourgei Geourgiev | Judge: Gay Parkinson

The “Formula 1” of the equine species Tonight’s commentator Chris Ryan previews the inaugural Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic I LOVE THE THOROUGHBRED. I love their intelligence, their beauty, their refinement and their courage under fire. Nature (100 per cent genetics) and nurture (everything else!) have given the thoroughbred a most amazing anatomy and physique, a designer heart-to-lung ratio and a mind that can process data at speed which allows their engine to tick over at an astonishing 35 miles per hour – the “Formula 1” of the equine species. The ultimate equine athlete! I’m so excited to be commentating on these horses with second careers in eventing. They just love it! Two of my favourites, Kinsau, by Indian Danehill has gone all the way up the grades with Sofie Walshe and were placed an excellent third in the pair’s first 4* at Kilguilkey International this year, while Trucking Along with Amy Walsh has recorded an amazing 14 clear cross-country rounds out of 14 starts inside the time at amateur level. Treo Eile has put together a brilliant field for this inaugural pro-celeb challenge – we assess some of the chances in the table opposite.

“What an exciting line up of stars . It’s a puzzle to price but we’ll be there” — Daragh Fitzpatrick

Ryan’s ante-post team betting and form for the Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic 2/1: The Galileos Joseph O’Brien on Honest Robber. The son of Court Cave was a two-time winner, who landed a right touch for trainer Shark Hanlon and Racheal Blackmore, backed from 20/1 to 8/1. Hasn’t won a Melbourne Cup... yet! Joseph was a two-time champion jockey AND a winner of a European Pony Championship Medal. Cathal Daniels, who rides My Lucky Day, is the winner of more European medals than can be counted! He was on the podium with Ingrid Klimke and Michael Jung to win bronze at the Europeans. He likes to keep in the best of company.

EVS: The Tigers Tiger Roll’s Grand National-winning jockey Davy Russell rides Barberton, and he won Knockany EI90 in 2020 and was third in the National Championship. Lucca Stubington on Clebourne (Camacho) has had some great results eventing thoroughbreds. Olivia Swan (on two European championship teams) rides a future 5* eventer Clonakilty Bay. The pony is Pumpkin under Emily O’Brien, who has built up an impressive show jumping record.

Patrick Whelan on his son of Galileo, Galileo Dance, he only rides the blue bloods! Galileo Dance was an impressive winner of The Stepping Stones Thoroughbred class at Wexford this year. Young Paddy Smullen on Avalon Romulus was an eye-catching eighth on his first start at Punchestown EI90 in October. He has a 100p Timeform rating.

3/1: The Nearcos

6/4: The Arkles

The Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning jockey Bryan Cooper is on fire this season and rides Ragged Company (Zebedee).

The record-setting Champion Flat jockey Colin Keane rides Hidden Vale. He finished eighth in a Tattersalls pre-novice, show jumping clear in 50 per cent of his eight starts. Excellent stats!

Hickstead Speed Derby and RDS 5-star-winning Esib Power is on her Burghley-placed Soladoun (Maldoun). They won Kilguilkey 4 star last year. Are the fences going to be too small?

Olympian and Equiratings’ Sam Watson is on dark horse Lessankan, who finished second in a Fakenham novice chase.

Jamie Buckley is on Woodland Opera (Robin Des Champs), who is our top-rated horse on 161. He won nine races and over €200,000 for trainer Jessie Harrington. Jamie also won Balmoral’s Racing to Riding Horse, beating Mossbank and Sizing Europe.

Nicki Russell on Sizing Europe, who was just held by Woodland Opera (Robin des Champs), also here, on flat form at Balmoral Racing to Riding Horse. This jumping is tougher, but he impressed last week training at Raheen Na Gun. Georgia de Bromhead on Back In A Flash. The de Bromheads win just about everything!

Max Galway on Clonagh Boy comes here under the radar. Could be anything!

Trainers retraining Trainers Jessica Harrington and Peter Fahey have always taken a pro-active approach to the retraining of the racehorses in their care, reports Aisling Crowe

T

RAINER ENGAGEMENT is one of the key elements in ensuring that the mission of Treo Eile and the work of retraining Ireland’s racehorses for successful second careers bear fruit. Jessica Harrington, Ireland’s foremost dualpurpose trainer, has long been a supporter of initiatives to for Ireland’s retired racehorses and it is the versatile nature of the thoroughbred she believes which lends itself particularly to training. “They can be hacking horses, they can be companion horses, they can end up being show jumpers, eventers or even dressage horses. The thing that you have to remember about the thoroughbred is it is a very adaptable creature,” comments the accomplished horsewoman, who represented Ireland at three-day eventing before embarking on her enormously successful training career. The Commonstown Stud team is an advocate of practising what they preach and some of their most successful runners of recent years are now happily enjoying second careers in a variety of pursuits. Supasundae, whose Grade 1 triumphs included a defeat of Faugheen in the Irish Champion Hurdle, has found his niche as a schoolmaster at his jockey Robbie Power’s yard. Unlike Supasundae however, injury dictates that Harrington’s Gold Cup winner Sizing John has a sedate second career, as Kate Harrington, assistant to her mother, explains. “He is not going to come fit enough to have that second career which many racehorses go on to have but he is going to have a long and happy retirement here at Commonstown or maybe at the Irish National Stud, as part of their Living Legends,” she adds. Jessica Harrington: believes that the thoroughbred is ideal for retraining

Trainer Peter Fahey

The Gold Cup hero would join an elite club, one of the biggest draws at the Irish National Stud. Fellow Gold Cup winner Kicking King along with Champion Hurdle victors Hurricane Fly, Hardy Eustace and Faugheen, as well as Ascot Gold Cup winner Rite Of Passage and the multiple Grade 1 winner Beef Or Salmon are already settled into a leisurely retirement with visits from their fans.

O

F COURSE, there are only a handful of horses who would ever qualify for legendary status at any one time, and their post-racing fates are normally much more secure than the horses who never shone on the racetrack So Treo Eile’s work is particularly vital for their needs and there are many horses today who are excelling in the new careers they have been retrained for. Esib Power, one of Ireland’s leading three-day eventers and who is competing here tonight, gained a top ten finish at Burghley International Horse Trials on Soladoun. The 14-year-old gelding failed to set the world alight as a racehorse, winning once in three starts in his native France, but under Power’s expert guidance has emerged as a top-class international competitor. “This guy was always quite special, talented and a bit of a monkey, but we always knew he had talent and he has got to the top level in eventing,” says Power.

“WE RETIRED MINE NOW [ridden tonight by Rory Cleary], who was a handy little horse and he is now living his best life with my niece Aoife. She used to ride him every day in the yard and has him to retrain for hunting and show jumping. He’s full of beans and loving these new disciplines. “Shamad, who won four, is now with James O’Haire [also competing tonight], who is re-schooling him for eventing. We love to see them do other jobs. They’re young, agile athletes who can thrive. “The Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show is a great incentive, and my wife Ber rode the Galway hero Ansar in the class. “We invested in some dressage lessons and he was so happy to be back in work and behaved like a two-year-old at the ripe old age of 15! “He finished fifth and they got to do a lap of honour in the main arena, which was a great buzz for both horse and rider! “Ber is now riding Peregrine Run – so watch this space!”

Hats off to the horses! Huge thanks are due from Treo Eile to a wide array of participants who have helped us to get this show up and running First, it is the horses who deserve our recognition. From foals and yearlings, to juveniles, stores and beyond. They’ve been prepped and poked, stood and stabled, bitted and backed. They’ve travelled to sales and racecourses far and wide; some slow, some fast, but still they keep on giving. Here tonight proof is positive that a thoroughbred is the real deal. The whole package. To our competitors. An extraordinary turnout of jockeys and professional riders all willing to come on board right from the idea’s inception; it meant that we quickly had a competition to shout about. Incredibly, we had a field of 30 riders committed in the first two weeks of team recruitment, proving there is a real appetite for a thoroughbred celebration. May this be the first of many! Our tireless team of volunteers. From parking to pole picking, each have played a part in establishing this event. We’ve (hopefully) left no stone unturned to ensure that everyone has a wonderful evening here at the Emerald Equestrian Centre - a fantastic, first-class venue. Our media partners. Racing Post, The Irish Field, Irish Eventing Times and International Thoroughbred magazine. Special thanks to Margie McLoone for going beyond the call of duty (throughout the year) and Sally Duckett for effortlessly producing an amazing programme. Tadhg Ryan from Bit-Media for live streaming and Racing TV which will be producing a highlights show, which we hope you’ll enjoy. Our photographers. Appreciation must be shown for some spectacular images courtesy of Louise O’Brien Photography, Sportsfile, Radka, David Betts, Bit-Media and Racing Post Photos. Our sponsors. Without whom Treo Eile wouldn’t exist. To them we are most grateful for their guidance and support during our launch year and we look forward to forging ahead in this important area. Finally, to the A-Team. All of whom were so positive about this idea from the first instance... Jessie Foster, Angela and Kevin O’Ryan, Valerie Hyde, Jane Foley, Amber Byrne and Siobhan Griffin.
