Perth Airport has implemented a new slot control system from the March 31 which appears to have restricted the number of delays we were experiencing compared. Let’s all hope that it works better than the old system but it still doesn’t get away from the fact that with the huge passenger volume increase through Perth, the third runway is an essential part of infrastructure going forward which is now being acknowledged by the Perth Airport and the Politicians alike. Skippers’ package holidays through Discover West Holidays have been well received incorporating all of our destinations especially the promotion to Monkey Mia. Motive Travel also has a number of tours for all sporting events. The coastal network changes incorporating extra services to Carnarvon (Thursday afternoon) and all direct Perth to Shark Bay / Monkey Mia services are being well received. The Monday afternoon service has recommenced via Geraldton. At long last Air BP has commissioned the new fuel installations at Carnarvon Airport for both Jet A1 and AvGas which is of great benefit to the airport and all aircraft operators who choose to refuel at this destination. Skippers Aviation continues to carry out the Kambalda Regular Public Transport services on behalf of Cobham (bookings and departures are from Cobhams terminal). If you need to rent a car, Burswood Car Rentals has a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service which can be ordered online or direct and in most cases at a cheaper rate than the better known brands. Skippers Road Transport arm continues to be very active in the resource industry and a couple of loads are shown on this page. We once again remind you that we have wireless internet available to our passengers in the Perth terminal free of charge. Please enquire upon checking in. Once again enjoy your journey with us today, we feel privileged to provide this service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

OUR BACKYARD

experience the extraordinary

in WA E

xperience Extraordinary is Western Australia’s state tourism brand – and the list below provides an impressive justification to this claim. In this issue we discover some extraordinary experiences from A – M. Read next issue to see what the second half of the alphabet has to offer. Aboriginal experiences: One of the world’s richest sites for rock art – the Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula in WA’s north – is home to more than 10,000 engravings dating back 30,000 years. Take a cultural tour and learn about Aboriginal history, culture and art – there are more than 60 Aboriginal tourism experiences dotted across WA. Bungle Bungle Range: Located in the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park, this range is the most unique in the world and a staggering 350 million years in the making. Flying over or camping in the range is an exhilarating experience. In 2013, it’s 30 years since the range was discovered by a film crew flying over the location. Cable Beach: The only place in the world where you can take a sunset camel ride on 22 kilometres (14 mile) of pristine white beach sands that fringe the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Dolphins: At Monkey Mia on WA’s mid north coast. This amazing 40 year old wildlife ritual has seen wild dolphins visit the shores each day to delight visitors, and is one of the world’s best and most reliable places for dolphin interaction. To swim with the Dolphins head to Bunbury or Rockingham, south of Perth. Events: Spectacular concerts, arts festivals, food and wine events and international sporting competitions are what you’ll find on WA’s event’s calendar. This year, Eventscorp (part of Tourism WA) will support more than 80 events including Australia’s richest golf tournament the Perth International (Oct 17-20) and international food and wine event – Margaret River Gourmet Escape (Nov 22-24).

Fremantle: About 20 minutes’ drive south of Perth, ‘Freo’ as it’s known to locals, boasts the best preserved example of a 19th century port streetscape in the world, with its world-famous heritage buildings and a fascinating maritime and convict history. Soak up the laidback ambience, chill-out in a street café, enjoy fish and chips at the Fishing Boat Harbour, or a cleansing pale-ale at an award-winning microbrewery. Golf: WA is home to the world’s longest golf course, the Nullarbor Links, which starts in Kalgoorlie and spans 1,365 kilometres (848 miles) across the Eyre Highway.

Jewel Cave: WA’s largest tourism cave is hidden in the beautiful Karri forest of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge, about 37 kilometres south of Margaret River. This cave sinks to a reachable depth of 42 metres and is 1.9 kilometres long. Karijini National Park: Home to some of the oldest rock formations in the world dating back two billion years, Karijini National Park is one of Australia’s largest and most spectacular national parks, and also features amazing gorges and waterfalls.

Horizontal Waterfalls: One of WA’s most unique attractions, the Horizontal Waterfalls in the Kimberley are created by large tidal movements. This is the only place in the world it can be found. Get up close by taking a boat ride through the falls.

Lucky Bay – Esperance: Scientifically proven as Australia’s whitest beach by the National Committee of Soil and Terrain, the pure white sands and clear turquoise waters of Lucky Bay are also popular with kangaroos, who can often be found there sun baking.

Inside Australia: Showcasing 51 statues representing residents from the nearby town of Menzies, Antony Gormley’s Inside Australia is the country’s largest world-class open air sculpture exhibit. Covering an area of 10 square kilometres (3.8 square miles), the art installation is located on the flat salt lake of Lake Ballard.

Margaret River and WA’s south west: One of the world’s premium wine regions, Margaret River is located in WA’s south west – one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Here you will find abundant fresh produce, sensational beaches, tall forests, limestone caves, as well as wildflowers and wildlife unique to the region. n

W

hile Western Australia’s Kimberley region is renowned for its sweeping landscapes and spectacular coastline, it’s the characters you meet in this untamed wilderness that provide you with a memorable travel experience. Building on the success of last year’s campaign, Australia’s North West Tourism has unearthed another four Kimberley characters each with their own special passion for the outback and the natural attractions they live and work among. Videos of each character will showcase their strong connection with the region and their spectacular surrounds. Viewers are given a chance to win a trip for two to spend seven days with one of these unique Kimberley ambassadors. “Whether they were born and bred in the Kimberley or set foot on a wide expanse of beach and decided never to leave, these people bring life to the landscapes they live in,” said Australia’s North West Tourism CEO Glen Chidlow. “They love to share their exceptional local knowledge and larrikin humour with travellers eager to soak up this unique part of Australia.” Meet the Characters of the Kimberley:

Daryl Roberson – Broome’s Cable Beach is his office Many say Daryl has the best job in the Kimberley, spending the day under a brolly at the Cable Beach Hut, and this Brisbane boy would have to agree. When Daryl walked over Broome’s sand dunes and first laid eyes on Cable Beach, where the desert meets the sea, he knew he was in paradise. That was back in 1991 and he still gets a thrill when he walks over that dune to work every morning – always taking a moment to drink in the contrasts of red earth, pure white sand and vivid turquoise water. He takes as much pleasure in the rhythms of beach life as he did on his first visit, marvelling at pods of dolphins chasing mullet, watching the rays cruise the shallows or spotting sea eagles and kites. Whether you’re a millionaire mogul or a regular working guy, Daryl’s the bloke who’ll get you set for the perfect day on the beach – whether you fancy having a go at paddle boarding or surfing, lazing on a lounger or discovering some of the beach’s hidden gems, from Coconut Wells to Willie Creek.

Brian Lee – Indigenous tour guide and spear fishing legend of Kooljaman When Brian first came out to the birthplace of his grandparents and parents at Cape Leveque, he was in complete awe of his country – one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth. Here, in the sand hills, he stands on a time capsule containing thousands of years of his ancestors’ history and proudly shares the stories and experiences his people once shared with him. Brian treasures every moment in his country, especially when he’s out on the reef with a tinny full of local Djarindjin kids, or fishing the crystal-clear waters of Hunter’s Creek (named after his great grandfather). With fishing spear or mud crabbing hook in hand, he’ll demonstrate how an old hand makes the perfect catch. He’ll happily share his secrets with anyone who cares to join him on a Kooljaman tagalong tour to his favourite spots on pristine Cape Leveque.

WIN! WIN!

Ebony Muirson - Kimberley Coastal Camp manager and adventurer

Inflight Publishing readers have the chance to enter the Characters of the Kimberley competition for a chance to win one of four once in a lifetime experiences in Australia’s North West.

As an eight-year-old from Busselton, Ebony was charmed by the Kimberley’s wild side on her first bumpy ride through Kununurra’s cattle station country 21 years ago. For Ebony, living with the Kimberley’s incredible diversity has brought adventure in spades. Fishing in creeks beneath trees filled with orchids, cruising the spectacular Kimberley coastline, camping beside thundering waterfalls, getting engaged on the summit of Steep Head Island in the Admiralty Gulf. It’s these simple pleasures of living with nature that Ebony loves to share with visitors to Kimberley Coastal Camp. Chasing Barra, sharing a moment with Foxy and Harrison the dingoes, Olivia the olive python who hangs out in the kitchen, and the friendly sleepy sharks in the bay, or taking a bush walk to view ancient Gyorn Gyorn paintings, Ebony does it all. Ask nicely and she might play a request on her ukulele beside the campfire, while hula-hooping.

The Characters of the Kimberley local legends are inviting you into their world and sharing their most treasured wonders in one of the last true wilderness areas on earth. All four are truly extraordinary, which one will you choose? Head to http://competition.australiasnorthwest.com for details.

Beautiful Kimberley

L

Sharpey (Charlie Sharpe) Lake Argyle Pioneer A Lake Argyle pioneer, Sharpey spent his childhood seeking big adventures on and around the big waters of the lake with his brother and their surfcats. Even after his adventures in building extreme whiteknuckle rides took him to Europe, China, Africa and the US, Sharpey still gets his biggest thrills just taking in the view across Australia’s largest man-made lake. On a full moon, Sharpey loves getting out on the water and soaking up the calm and chaos of nature. And when he’s not busy redeveloping the Lake Argyle Resort to complement the landscape he loves, you might find him out there on the islands, beaches and southern wetlands with his family and resort guests – fishing, swimming, diving, water skiing or just sharing a quiet moment with the brolgas, ducks, pelicans, jabirus, crocodiles, wild horses and wallabies.

Wine in the wilderness I

nternationally-acclaimed West Australian winemaker Larry Cherubino will visit one of the world’s most isolated settings to host a four-day wine tasting event ‘Wine in the Wilderness’ at Faraway Bay in the far north Kimberley from July 29 to August 2. A maximum of 16 guests will share Larry’s intimate winemaking secrets while indulging in tastings of his finest drops, including vertical and regional tastings, fine wine, food matching and more. When not talking and tasting wine with Larry, and dining on freshly prepared gourmet meals, guests can immerse themselves in Faraway Bay’s spectacular scenery and tempting array of activities. Overlook the Timor Sea while bathing in a spring-fed rock pool, enjoy spectacular fishing, explore Ice Age rock art, and cruise to Western Australia’s largest waterfall – the iconic twin King George Falls, as seen in the movie ‘Australia’. Revered by wine critics and collectors, Larry Cherubino has won more awards than any other contemporary winemaker working in Australia today – some 100 trophies, 400 gold medals, and counting. Larry Cherubino Wines was James Halliday's ‘2011 Winery of the Year’ and in the 2013 James Halliday Wine Companion, scored more 94+-point ratings than any other Australian winery. Larry describes the Wine in the Wilderness as the ultimate dream holiday for wine, food and travel connoisseurs. “Faraway Bay is one of Australia’s hidden gem locations. And if you love wine, then you’ll be in good company. I’m looking forward to sharing some of my favourites, and what an amazing setting to do it in,” he said. The fully-inclusive Wine in the Wilderness package is $5,540 per person. Includes a four-day, four-night wine program featuring Larry Cherubino wines and other winemaker-selected wines and champagne, scenic air transfers ex-Kununurra, twin-share accommodation in an ensuite cliff-top cabin, all gourmet meals, all tours and activities, and a bottle from Larry’s limited edition collection to take home. P

erth has been voted as one of the most liveable cities in the world. Its spectacular natural surroundings are rivalled only by its vibrant city life and cultural landscape. Visitors can dine on local produce at a newly opened restaurant or bar, picnic in one of the world’s largest inner city parks, explore a worldclass wine region or watch the sun set over the ocean – all within 30 minutes of the CBD. The only problem with visiting Perth is that when you are on a business trip with only 2 days to spare, you can’t take it all in.

DAY 1:

I stepped off the plane from Brisbane and straight into an Avis rental car making a bee line for one of the loveliest hidden gems in Perth - 150 East Riverside Bar Restaurant. I was meeting a colleague and a few business associates and what better way to catch up then over a bottle of red and a three course extravaganza of flavours. 150 East Riverside is located within the Assured Ascot Quays Apartment Hotel on the Great Eastern Highway headed into the city from the airport. The restaurant looks out to the river and having been open 10 years now, the entire establishment just underwent a major refurbishment. Not only is the new styling and décor fabulous, but Executive chef Dan Child and his team of international chefs take a lot of pride in serving up the freshest, local seasonal

produce. In fact, one could even say they push the boundaries of what hotels have to offer, presenting more of a fine dining feel. The food, mostly modern Australian cuisine, not only impresses, it surprises. The restaurant is ambient, the food delicious and honestly, 2 hours of eating and drinking over lunch just wasn’t enough. I could have stayed much longer just enjoying the vibe and the location. But it was off to our accommodation, Four Points Perth by Sheraton where we stayed the next two nights. Four Points, located opposite the Perth Arena near the CBD, recently completed a multi-million dollar redevelopment with all 278 rooms and suites undergoing a total transformation. Interior Designers Hirsch Bedner Associates created a design and style inspired by elements of the Western Australian landscape. All rooms are finished with contemporary décor and furnishings, completely renovated bathrooms with walk-in shower, work desk and wireless internet access; pretty flash for business or pleasure. The lobby, restaurant and bar also had a major facelift and when re-opened were also renamed The Eatery and Best Brew bar in line with the Four Points concept venues. On the first night of our stay my colleague and I checked out The Eatery for an early dinner. The service was friendly, the food delicious (the steak was just what the doctor ordered) and the funky, playful décor made you instantly relax and feel quite at home in the restaurant. Dinner done, it was bed time!

DAY 2:

It is not often you wake up feeling refreshed and well slept when you are in a bed that’s not your own. But this is exactly how I felt waking up at Four Points. The beds were so comfortable! If the buffet breakfast wasn’t calling my name I might have been tempted to turn off the alarm and keep sleeping. Instead I got up, opened the blinds to see the bustling city sprawled

out below me, had a shower and headed downstairs. Plus, the next meeting was looming so after a delicious breakfast in The Eatery (everything from chipolatas, creamy scrambled eggs and bacon to yoghurt in little jars and an overload of colourful fruit salad) it was off to Kings Park. Even with very little time in Perth you really should stop and smell the roses as they say. And in this case you should do it literally. Kings Park is a 4.06-square-kilometre park located on the western edge of the CBD in Perth, and the views looking back over the city are amazing. While you are there be sure to stop in at Frasers Restaurant for a coffee, they get it just right and it means you get to savour the views for a little longer looking out the big glass windows in the restaurant or in the fresh air of the café. We perched in the restaurant, cosy yet stylish, and watched the world go by for an hour or so while talking business. Sipping a perfectly frothed cappuccino peering out to the Perth skyline made this business meeting really rather enjoyable. The rest of the afternoon was spent flitting from place to place all the while taking in the magical city that is Perth. It was a long day but all the more reason to sit back with a drink or two in the Best Brew Bar at Four Points to debrief and relax.

DAY 3: Home time.

TRAVEL BUG BITES

Surf and

Salt BY LAHNEE PAVLOVICH

W

hat could be better than sun, surf and salt? Well, not much, so for this edition Inflight Publishing caught with former world number 6 pro surfer Claire Bevilacqua who has been a household name in surfing since winning her first title in 1998. She was ranked number six in the world in 2006 and, using her passion and experience in the sport, is now the head surf instructor at luxury Bali-based yoga, surf and spa resort, SALT Retreats.

YOU WERE BORN IN WA, WHERE DO YOU

did carve up the waves, I’m sure it was a shock! From beating the boys, I decided I wanted to be a state champion, the national champ and so on. My biggest moment was when I became the best junior in Australia – that’s when I knew I could take on the world.

CALL HOME THESE DAYS? I have travelled the world as a pro-surfer, but I’m a WA-girl through and through. I was raised in Perth and I love the city for its culture and nightlife, but my heart lies in the south-west country region. TELL ME A BIT ABOUT HOW YOU GOT INTO SURFING? I started surfing when was 13 and I found a surfboard in the neighbour’s rubbish bin – not the most traditional way to start a career path! I took the board to my local beach and practiced paddling and standing in the white-water. I wiped out countless times, but after watching some of the other surfers and copying their technique, I eventually caught my first wave – and never looked back since!

24

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

WHEN YOU TOOK IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND STARTED COMPETING, DID YOU HAVE A VISION OR A GOAL YOU WANTED TO ACHIEVE? HOW DID YOU KEEP INSPIRED AND MOTIVATED TO ACHIEVE IT? I take everything one small step at a time, setting achievable goals and achieving them, then setting the bar a little bit higher for the next goal. One of my first goals was to beat the local boys at my surf club and because surfing used to be such a stereotypical ‘guy sport’ when a girl

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE SPORT? I have had some real defining moments throughout my career, but the most prestigious accolades came when I was announced Rookie of the Year in Hawaii, when I was named Pipeline Champion as part of the World Tour and when I was named the Australian Pro Junior Champ. WHAT WAS THE PINNACLE FOR YOU IN YOUR SURFING CAREER? I could never name just one – being named as a challenger for the Women’s World Title and

SALT Retreat

WHEN YOU TRAVEL, WHERE DO YOU GO AND HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION? There are three things I look for – warm weather, safety and good waves. This has led me all across the globe, but I love the climate and surf in Bali, which is why I signed on to be one of the surf coaches at luxury surf, yoga and spa resort SALT Retreats. YOU ARE NOW TEACHING OTHERS TO SURF, HOW REWARDING IS THAT? Surfing brings me such joy, so sharing the joy with others is one of the most rewarding experiences possible. I find that passion is contagious and seeing previously timid people experience the rush and confidence that comes with riding a wave is fantastic – it doesn’t hurt that I get to teach in the eternally warm, tropical waters of Bali!

competing against the biggest names in surfing was dream come true. WHAT IS SURFING ALL ABOUT FOR YOU? WHY DO YOU LOVE IT? Surfing represents everything I love about life. It’s fun, it pushes you to always be better, and it’s a physical activity and encourages you to be outdoors. It’s also such a non-discriminate sport; you can be any age, male or female, any ethnicity and economic background. Looking at the surfers out in the ocean – they could be anyone, and it brings people together. You can’t help but develop a passion and respect for the ocean when you surf. You learn to appreciate the greatness of nature; the ocean can be a dangerous giant or a calm, peaceful pool; it can be destructive while also being home to so many different eco-systems.

HOW CAN PEOPLE PRACTICE ON LAND TO HELP THEM PREPARE FOR THE OCEAN? Surfing is such a unique sport, but there are elements used in surfing – like balance and core strength – that you can focus on with targeted exercises. Skateboarding is great to help with balance and it has similar movements to that of surfing, but you can never replicate the experience of riding a wave without hitting the water. That’s why it’s so important for me to get out in the ocean as much as possible, rain, hail or shine. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TOP TIPS FOR PEOPLE FINDING THE FUEL TO GET OUT IN THE WAVES? Fuel your body with raw, organic foods as I’ve found this combination gives far more slowburning energy. I begin my mornings with a big bowl of oats, raw nut milk and dried fruit and wash it down with green tea. I’ve also learnt a couple of good recipes from chef Pete Evans, who created the SALT Retreat menu. I’m addicted to the fresh coconut water and green smoothies. Claire will host three retreats in the later part of 2013. n

V i v a I t a l i a T hink about the Italy of your dreams; where life moves at a slower pace, grape vines and olive trees sprawl across the landscape, rugged mountainous terrain envelopes the Adriatic coastline and everywhere you look traditional village life unfolds before your eyes. Welcome to Abruzzo! Bordered by the dramatic snowcapped Apennine Mountains is the unspoilt Abruzzese province of Teramo. And it is here that Brisbane born couple Luciana Masci and Michael Howard spend six months of the year taking tourists on a tour like no other – an Abruzzo Tour. Luciana, a physiotherapist by trade, always had a soft spot for her family’s Abruzzese heritage. It was this love of Italy and Abruzzo that inspired her to set up Abruzzo Tours. “My heritage and cultural ties remained strong throughout the years. I would visit my family in Abruzzo often and kept fluent

in the regional dialect and Italian,” Luciana said. “After I re-met my husband Michael in 2001, he was actually my first boyfriend when I was 19 but we lost touch and then miraculously reconnected at one of his shows in Brisbane, we decided to leave our safe life behind and embark on a new journey together.” Since 2006 the couple have been sharing the treasures of Abruzzo with others. Luciana said her and Michael loved being able to share the rich culture of the region with travellers who were keen to explore a more traditional Italy without the crowds. “Abruzzo is a stunning region and we take pride in being able to create and share magical moments with our guests,” she said. “We believe food brings people together, and with the rich traditional culture and history of Abruzzo, our tours certainly create a once-in-a-lifetime

experience. “Abruzzo is where my family is from, it’s off the beaten track, it’s remote and the tourism infrastructure isn’t there, but it’s in Abruzzo where you see the real Italy. The culture and the life there is as authentic as it gets. Often tourists go to Italy but they don’t see the country as the locals do. So we let them in and relive the traditions of our forefathers. “We indulge in not only gourmet foods but also the musical, artistic and cultural sides of Italy. Our cooking classes merge into singing classes and Michael, an international operatic tenor, will always give a private concert. There is something so surreal about the aroma of food, taste of wine and the sound of the opera in the Italian countryside. It makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.” Abruzzo Tours are all-inclusive and include accommodation, all meals and drinks, wine, olive oil and cheese tastings; fully escorted by Luciana and Michael. >>

From October 12 – 20 Marion will share her culinary tips and ideas on local cuisine during hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations on the the Variety Vietnam Culinary Tour. Hanoi to the deep valleys of Mai Chau for a school community project, travellers will be immersed in all the wonderful rich culture Vietnam has to offer. A key hands-on highlight of the tour will be cooking classes with Madam Anh Tuyet, highly regarded as Hanoi’s best chef. Visiting the local market, travellers will learn all about Vietnamese ingredients and herbs before returning to her kitchen where Madam Anh Tuyet will demonstrate how to cook traditional dishes before serving them up as a tantalising lunch menu in her esteemed restaurant. At the Hoa Sua Vocational Training School where disadvantaged youth learn hospitality and educational skills, reminiscent of “Jamie’s Kitchen”, travellers will be taught by the school’s teachers to cook delicacies such as lotus root and shrimp salad, fresh spring rolls with shrimp and pork, char grilled pork balls with rice noodle and sweetened lotus seed doughnuts. Other food experiences include dining at the 400 year old Dinh Bang Communal House and Mau Dich Restaurant, as well as visiting the empowering Muong Culture Space,

Temple of Literature and Do Temple. The ultimate kitchen activity, however, will be on the final two days of the tour when the group will help to build a kitchen for a remote Vietnamese kindergarten. This community kitchen will stand as a permanent reminder of the nine unforgettable days for the travellers and of course, the local children who will benefit from it for years to come. The cost for this all-encompassing Vietnamese adventure is from $3,250 which includes return economy international flights from Sydney to Hanoi with airport transfers, excursions, meals and accommodation. In addition, Travellers have a minimum fundraising goal of $3,000 which will be used to purchase a Sunshine Coach for a school in Dubbo (rural NSW) which supports 265 students, 67% of which are aboriginal and 26 have special needs. The Sunshine Coach will be used to transport children to school (ensuring they attend) and to extra-curricular activities that they would otherwise miss out on. Inflight Publishing chats to celebrity chef Marion Grasby Tell me a bit about you and your journey to becoming a celebrity chef? I feel so lucky to have been able to turn my passion for food and cooking into a day job that I love and cherish. Not everyone in the world has the opportunity to live a full and happy life, so I’m incredibly grateful for everything I’ve managed to achieve.

any foodie to use and enjoy.

You are well known for your time on Master Chef, what was that experience like for you and how has that shaped what you are doing today? Masterchef was an amazing experience. Not only did I get to cook and learn from some great chefs but I also made life-long friends.

You cook, and eat, many different recipes. What is your all-time favourite meal to cook? And what is your favourite meal to eat? My favourite meal to cook is a Thai green chicken curry. And my favourite meal to eat is Thai green chicken curry!

Tell me about ‘Marion Grasby’ - what do you love to do in your spare time? Food and cooking might be my day job but funnily enough, I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do in my spare time either. So cooking, eating and learning about food is what I do to relax and have fun. Yes, I really am a food nerd!

Safe as ... tough as ... comfy as ... Aussie as … an Able Bus & Coach Safety sets these vehicles apart. This includes, as standard, built-in Rollover Protection System (ROPS) to Australian Standards 1636.1 & 2294.2 and Australian Design Rule (ADR) rollover compliance. Critically all engineering tests are validated and vehicles exceed the Australian Design Rule weight standards of 65kg per person by a minimum of 53 per cent. Able vehicles are tough and engineered to deliver outstanding reliability.

The air conditioners are West Australian designed and built to withstand extreme heat and vibration experienced in Australia’s remote areas. All vehicle framework is grit blasted and primed to protect against the effects of harsh operating conditions above or below ground. Able fabricated modules are designed for a larger, more robust modified chassis. This makes for a stronger, more reliable vehicle over its lifetime. STAY HEALTHY

Speed up your healing Fast track remedies to reduce headaches, migraines, bone aches, lack of energy, high blood pressure, bad moods and more BY KARINA STEWART, DOCTOR OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE AND KAMALAYA CO-FOUNDER (WWW.KAMALAYA.COM)

Fast track remedies to:

• •

Reduce headaches: • Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and headaches are often caused by tension, take 500mg, 3 times a day if you feel stressed, anxious or tense in the body. • Headaches are often due to dehydration, so avoid diuretics such as alcohol and coffee and consume filtered water throughout the day, you should have at least 1500ml daily and more if you are exercising or perspiring excessively. • Massage away the tension in your neck and shoulders; a good foot massage can also bring relief. • Practice relaxation techniques, simply becoming mindful of your breathing can help. Migraines: • Detox once or twice a year, cleansing the liver alleviates many migraines. After a detox it is a good time to detect food sensitivities, challenge some foods to see if they are contributing to your migraines. • Eat regularly and focus on an even blood sugar level, so a whole food diet with lots of vegetables, whole grain and some quality protein with each meal. Avoid food colouring, additives, preservatives etc. • Seek help from a health professional who is able to assess your body alignment and structural imbalances which contribute to some migraines. Bone aches: • Take a warm bath with a cup full of epsom salts, magnesium sulphate, to soothe aches.

Take a multi vitamin and mineral supplement with breakfast; these contain the full range of B vitamins that will give you a boost. Practice some qi gong to boost energy rather than push yourself to do a work out and deplete your energy stores further.

High blood pressure: • Exercise daily. • Sustain your optimal weight with a balanced diet, regular meal times and regular exercise. • Practice meditation daily, or any other stress management strategies that work for you, just be consistent in practicing them. • Calcium rich foods to incorporate into your diet include seaweeds, wheat or barley grass; nuts, seeds, quinoa, beans, greens, fish and chicken. • Increase your intake of potassium. Potassium helps to balance out the sodium in the body. 1/2 cup of dried ginger in a warm bath is also extremely beneficial. • Consider a calcium supplement with vitamin D. 1000mg of calcium hydroxyappetite taken at night is best for carrying calcium into the bones. Lack of energy: • Avoid the great temptation of a ‘quick fix’, that is no sugar or caffeine, this will give you a false energy for a short time and deplete your vitality even more. Eat three regularly timed meals and keep them balanced, mostly a plate of fresh, colourful vegetables, a small portion of protein, approximately 100g and some whole grain once a day.

Bad moods: • Consume a whole food diet taken at regular intervals, ensure some quality protein is taken with an array of vegetables and a small portion (1/2 cup) of whole grain, this is to provide an even blood sugar level in addition to nourishing the nervous system. • Avoid sugar and other stimulants such as caffeine as these set of the ‘blood sugar rollercoaster’ and the mood changes go with it. • Avoid alcohol and other toxins which burden the liver, a toxic liver will create irritability, moodiness and sometimes depression. • Practice meditation daily or other stress management strategies that work for you. n

Bowel Cancer

W

ith more than 14,000 cases a year nationally, bowel cancer is the country’s most common internal cancer affecting both men and women. It’s second only to lung cancer in how many Australians it kills. Importantly, if it’s caught in time, 90% of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated. The problem is that fewer than 40% are detected early in Australia. May was Rotary Bowelscan month across WA. The program is now in its seventh year of encouraging people to become more aware of the disease and to act annually to detect any problems.

People who purchased a Rotary Bowelscan kit during May have until June 14 to send it back to be tested free of charge. The tests pick up traces of invisible blood in the sample, which can indicate abnormal gastrointestinal bleeding. Over the past six years, Rotary Bowelscan kits have turned up almost 300 positive results. Those positive tests have resulted in the diagnosis of at least 23 cases of bowel cancer and more than 133 cases of pre-cancerous polyps. The Chinese Way: As a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I believe, as the ancient Chinese believed, that the seasons have a profound effect on our health and wellbeing, and that we are directly influenced by climatic changes throughout the year. Therefore, eating according to the seasons is a great way to support and strengthen our health and prevent future imbalances that can lead to illness. Chinese Medicine Food Therapy is a way to remain in harmony with nature. By following simple guidelines on how we should eat according to the natural cycle of the seasons, we are able to nourish our bodies and improve our immunity. For autumn/winter season, the majority of our diet should be in the form of warm soups, broths, and stews in order to warm our bodies on the inside. Using herbs such as garlic, ginger and peppercorns also provide warmth for this season, which in turn helps to boost the immune system. Garlic is antibacterial, while ginger boosts circulation and is an excellent anti-inflammatory. Grated ginger with hot water and lemon is an excellent way to prevent early onset colds.

Eat an abundance of antioxidant-rich foods: Try to include a wide range of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Eating an antioxidant-rich diet is one of the best ways to optimise your immune system. Glutathione, found in asparagus, avocado and parsley, has been described as the "most important antioxidant" because it empowers your immune system to exert

its full potential by quenching free radicals, recycling vitamins C and E into their biologically active forms and regulating DNA synthesis and repair, while carotenoids in sweet potatoes, pumpkin and other orange, red, yellow and dark green fruits and veggies are said to enhance many aspects of immune function. Selenium, found in foods such as Brazil nuts, tuna, brown rice, and sunflower seeds help prevent cellular damage from free radicals and play a role in your immune system health as well. Exercise is essential: It’s a good idea to regard exercise like you do eating, breathing and sleeping, and you’ll enjoy better health because of it. Physical activity, including brisk walking, can enhance your antibody and natural T cell response. Research shows that people who exercise are half as likely to catch a cold as those who do not, and even if they do catch a cold, their symptoms tend to be less severe. Finding the right form of exercise will reduce your stress levels as well. Be optimistic and enjoy life: It is important to enjoy life and have a fun, optimistic outlook. Cell-mediated immunity actually increases with a person’s level of optimism so try to do enjoyable activities when you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, whether it is treating yourself to a weekly massage, going to a regular yoga class or making time to read a good book. Just make sure you give yourself permission to do these things as this will be beneficial in reducing your stress levels and increasing your immunity in the long-term. n

FAMILY MATTERS

P

icking the perfect pet for your family can be tough, with so many breeds, personality considerations and physical attributes to weighup; it can turn what should be an exciting experience into a stressful choice. To help families make the best decision, celebrity animal behaviourist and Purina ambassador Jo Righetti has compiled some top tips. Time - Animals thrive off touch and interaction, so you should ask how much time you and your family can devote to a new pet. One of the most time-consuming pets is generally a puppy, so if you all work long hours or are gone for most of the day, a young dog might not be the best choice for you. Cats tend to be more selfsufficient, but will enjoy some time for cuddles when you’re home. Energy - Choose a pet that matches your energy levels - if you’re fit, active and have a young family, go for a more active breed of dog. If you prefer to lounge around, then opt for a cat or an older pet that doesn’t require as much exercise. Don’t assume that an energetic pet will change to suit your couch potato habits! Finances - Before you purchase a pet, assess whether you can afford one. Think about all the costs after the initial purchase - can you meet the expenses of council registration, vet bills, holiday care and day to day items such as food, flea and parasite prevention, pet insurance, training, bedding, grooming and a strong collar and lead? Space - The type of space is actually more important than amount of space. The quality of interaction with you is more important to your pet than the size of your garden. Dogs can live in smaller spaces, provided they get adequate exercise, stimulation and interaction. Family members - Your first choice of pet may not suit everyone in your family. Be prepared to compromise before making the purchase and make sure every person in the family has a say – that way chores, feeding and exercising your new pet can be delegated fairly.

PICKING THE PERFECT PET FOR YOUR FAMILY

Current pets - consider any other pets you have and how they might welcome an additional family member. Speak to an expert about how to introduce them slowly and properly and supervise the relationship especially at the beginning, especially if they are different species, there is a size difference or one animal is considerably older. Most introductions will be successful, but be realistic – relationships take time and effort and you will need to be careful and patient. Stage of life - does a pet fit your lifestyle? Do you have young children and/or a full time job? Are you wanting to travel extensively overseas? Are you elderly and need to consider your pet in your will? Before you think about a pet, think about yourself and whether an animal will suit you and your stage of life. When you are ready to move to the next stage of pet ownership, make sure you chat to your local AWLA shelter. AWLA has partnered with Purina to make sure any pets adopted out from AWLA are desexed, microchipped, health checked and are trained and given a nutritionally based diet. Visit www.purina.com.au

BY MORGAN SOLOMON, HEAD OF WILLS & ESTATE PLANNING AT PERTH LAW FIRM BOWEN BUCHBINDER VILENSKY, WWW.BBVLEGAL.COM

Three things you should know about wills

E

veryone knows that having a will is important if you own any assets, and especially if you have a partner and/or children. But about 50% of people don’t have a will. Even among the 50% who do, there is important advice worth following:

1. Avoid DIY wills The DIY will packs you can buy at the Post Office or news agencies are to be avoided for the simple reason that, like any legal instrument, a will is only as good as the person drafting it. Many people make simple drafting errors, leaving their will wide open to challenge. The emotional turmoil and expense of resolving such disputes is vastly disproportionate to the relatively small cost of

36

Issue 28

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

having a will properly drafted in the first place.

2. Wills don’t cover everything A will doesn’t deal with all of a person’s estate. Your superannuation, for example, is not subject to a will. Instead, the trustee of your super fund deals with assets held in the fund. Self-managed super funds (SMSF) are increasingly common and it is especially important to deal with super properly. For example, a person may leave his estate to his wife and kids, but his super to children from a previous relationship. Without ensuring the super is secure, this asset could end up in the hands of his wife and new kids, with his previous children out in the cold.

3. Wills should be reviewed every 18 months Our current social reality of de facto relationships, increasing divorce, blended families and rising property values expands the range of people who may feel some sense of entitlement when a person dies and who can challenge a will in the Supreme Court – as well as the value of an estate. Since January 2013 step-children are now allowed to challenge a will and the law is constantly changing. An estate worth $1 million or more is a ripe target for disappointed beneficiaries, and that amount is nowadays not at all unusual to leave behind. I recommend reviewing your estate planning every 18 months. n

Strategies for success in The Survival Guide for Families in Oil & Gas BY ANGIE WILLCOCKS

S

taying in touch: We all have different ways of dealing with difficult situations. Some people need as much contact as possible to feel connected. Others prefer to withdraw, and find that limited contact helps them cope. So if your FIFO partner seems distant and unwilling to remain on the phone in the early days, try not to take it personally. Setting routines: For those on FIFO rosters, how ‘home’ time is spent can become a major source of conflict. Practical suggestions that work for some couples include agreeing from the outset on a set number of nights that will be spent together and socialising together or apart. Women in oil and gas: It’s important not to fall into unhelpful thinking patterns such as ‘magnifying’ (blowing a problem out of proportion), ‘personalising’ (making the problem all about you) and ‘over-generalising’ (making any problem about your gender, when the issue might actually have nothing to do with it). Overcoming jealousy: We’ve heard that jealousy and insecurity are sometimes a problem when workers are getting used to extended rosters on oil rigs. Apparently, some workers think it’s fun to joke about partners having affairs back home. Just tell yourself “everyone’s got a story and their story is not my story”. Change the subject or leave the conversation altogether. Friends and family: Encourage the ‘away’ partner to keep in regular contact with friends and family via phone or email when away. Encourage the ‘home’ partner to make plans to see friends and family even when the ‘away’ worker is home. This eases the pressure on you both. Increasing intimacy: Differing libidos challenge most long-term relationships. When sex becomes a major issue, the lower libido partner feels the need to send frequent signals that “I am definitely not in the mood”. The result is less intimacy in the whole relationship. That’s when it’s time to break your ‘sex cycle’. United parenting: Families separated for work are often good communicators because they take the time to discuss issues instead of assuming that mum/dad will ‘just know’. Some families start every break with a catch-up on purely practical parenting issues. This sends a strong message to the kids that mum and dad are a united team. Helping kids to cope: If your child is missing mum/dad, allow them to talk about it and offer an extra cuddle. Avoid saying things like “be brave” or “don’t be silly” because your child might begin to hide feelings away from you, thinking that you are not interested or that they are unacceptable feelings to discuss. Family rules: Depending on the age of your kids, involve them in the creation of family rules to stick on the fridge. Remember the golden rule for FIFO families: the rules apply all the time, whether you are home or not. Standard rules are very important for kids in hectic households.

Edna May staff catch all the action with Foxtel iQ boxes in every room Edna May Gold Mine in Westonia, WA, (part of the Evolution Mining Group), is the first Australian mine to provide a Platinum Foxtel offering with an iQ box in every employee’s room. To help celebrate this, Foxtel brought some former AFL Superstars to Westonia. Devon Roberts, Environmental and Community Superintendent for Edna May says the unique in-room facility goes great lengths to attracting and retaining staff and keeping them entertained and satisfied.

for everyone. Having an iQ box in-room also provides miners with the ability to pause, record and rewind live TV, so they have full control over what they watch and when, even if they are on shift work.

Roberts continued, “The next thing we knew, some of our favourite former Dockers and Eagles stars were coming out to the local Rec Complex and the mine site – not something that happens every day”.

“With Foxtel iQ in each room, all of the staff have been enjoying the extra entertainment, like they would at home.”

Foxtel understands that it’s important to keep FIFO miners entertained. An independent study has shown 50% of miners surveyed indicated access to pay TV is important in managing loneliness*. So, to demonstrate Foxtel’s commitment to entertaining the mining industry and bringing better entertainment to Westonia, Foxtel brought some of WA’s favourite AFL stars to the town for a community BBQ and footy clinic.

The wider Westonia community were keen to get involved with many miners and locals playing alongside the pros in an AFL drill clinic. Roberts agrees, “The event was great, not just for employees but for the entire Westonia community. The kids all got some signed gear, not to mention the equipment Foxtel donated to the local footy club.”

The new Platinum package provides staff with access to an even broader range of popular channels to watch after a hard day’s work including FOX FOOTY, helping staff keep up to date with their favourite team. And with Foxtel’s award-winning drama, news and dedicated lifestyle and documentary channels, there’s something

Perfect Positivity BY JESSICA HODGKINS POSITIVITY CAMPAIGN MANAGER, AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP CENTRE, WWW.AELC.EDU.AU

T

oday’s FIFO working environment has real challenges for workers and their families as relationships are tested by the tyranny of distance. High divorce rates, loss of self-esteem, loneliness and depression are results commonly experienced by those in the field. FIFO is however here to stay for the foreseeable future and people are sacrificing in the short term to ensure their financial well-being in the future. The damaging behaviours in which we engage are often brought about by our own attitude to challenges and the FIFO is particularly challenging for many individuals. We sometimes approach everyday issues in a negative way which in turn promotes an adversarial attitude to those around us. Common sense tells us though that no one likes being around someone who complains all the time or engages in undesirable actions. In fact studies tell us that to overcome the effects of one negative action, it must be combated with three positive actions. What then can we do to ensure we deal

40

Issue 28

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

with the isolation and effects in a positive way? This is where ‘One Day of Positivity’ campaign comes into play. The Australian Education and Leadership centre is promoting an attitude change in Australians as they spread the message that positivity is not about immediate happiness but about positive communication and action. And they have a website with a range of tools to achieve it. The idea behind the ‘One day of Positivity’ campaign asks people to demonstrate a positive attitude and engage in positive action for just 24 hours in the hope that it will mark the beginning of a positive life. As FIFO workers, those activities could include constructive communications with co-workers, spouses and families as well as engaging in any of the events and activities promoted on the website. Tracey Hodgkins, Founder and CEO of The Australian Education and Learning Centre would like to see the campaign encourage people to think in the now and appreciate the wonderful things they have around them.

“If everyone started the day with a smile, think of the potential the rest of the day could hold, I think by having just one successful day of positivity, it could become a daily habit and attitude,” Tracey said. Research conclusively shows that by consciously taking a positive approach to all situations, people set themselves up for success and happiness in the future. One Day of Positivity is not about removing all negativity, but it is about teaching individuals to turn that negative attitude into a positive thinking and behaviour. August 17, 2013 will be a culmination day filled with 24 hours of positive action and communication, through events and competitions. Everyone around WA can get involved, where it be a small action like smiling at a stranger or a larger gesture like offering your place in line to someone else or even apologising to someone you have shown anger towards, as a little bit of positivity can go a long way. If you would like to get involved go to the onedayofpositivity.com website and register for your free tool kit. n

Stay

Connected T

ravelling abroad can be exciting and with the high Australian dollar there has never been a better time. With the rise in the use of smartphones and tablets devices, more and more Australians are choosing to stay connected when they travel. While most people plan their airfares, accommodation and insurance well before departure, communication needs can often be overlooked. Increasingly, consumers are coming home to an unexpectedly high telecommunications bill—a phenomenon known as ‘Bill Shock’. If you are planning to use your mobile device overseas, be as prepared as possible: with a little preparation you can not only stay connected, but avoid paying a lot extra for doing so.

Here are some ways you can reduce the chances of experiencing bill shock: 1. Check your charges before you leave. Be aware that making a voice call or sending an SMS overseas can cost a lot more than doing so in Australia. Even receiving a call from Australia may accrue charges for the ‘international’ leg of that call. 2. Consider your data usage while overseas. Apps installed on your smart device often have auto-update settings that rely on data downloads which can easily chew through the megabytes. 3. Look for places that offer free Wi-Fi. This is a good opportunity to take advantage of free data to upload photos, send e-mails or to check your Facebook account. 4. Consider a travel product from your provider. Major service providers in Australia can offer ‘data packs’ or similar products that allow for a pre-determined level of use whilst overseas. 5. Another option to consider is a Passport-style SIM product. This product is designed specifically for travellers with a pre-set limit of voice, SMS and/or data that often includes its own phone number. Travellers must ensure they unlock their mobile device with their provider prior to using a passport style SIM product. 6. If you do unlock your phone prior to departure, you may simply purchase a SIM at your destination and use this with your smart device instead of using your regular Australian service. eld bi-annually, the 2013 Perth Truck and Trailer Show will present exhibits of new trucks and trailers, equipment and accessories; and is a must-see event for anyone who is thinking of purchasing a new truck. With less than three months to go, Show Director Peter Woods said event organisers were thrilled all exhibition space was sold and that all major brands would be on display. “The Truck and Trailer Show is such a major event for the industry that everyone gets involved time and time again,” Peter said. “The Show was fully subscribed weeks ago and because of an overwhelming interest we will have opened up more exhibition space on the concourse.”

What’s on Show The 2013 event will welcome back major truck brands including Scania, WesTrac and Caterpillar, Hino, Iveco, Volvo, Mack, Mercedes and Kenworth and more. Trailer companies attending include Lombardi, GTE, Drake, K-Hitch, Krueger, Parins, Howard Porter, CMIC, Maxi Trans, Vawdrey and Tieman. Companies displaying material handling include 600 Cranes, Palfinger, WATM and Cranetech. AIMEX 2013 reflects the changing face of mining suppliers A s equipment suppliers from “nontraditional” regions eye off the lucrative Australian mining market, some previously unknown names and makes will be seen for the first time at AIMEX – Asia Pacific’s International Mining Exhibition, in Sydney in August. AIMEX, which returns to the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park from August 20-23, is the largest mining exhibition in the Asia-Pacific region. New names on show will include GE Mining, Belaz from Belarus and the world’s second-largest manufacturer of mining trucks, underground coal mining specialist CME (part of China Coal), and XEMC, which has signed an agreement with Rio Tinto to supply a fleet of 230 tonne haul trucks to the Mt Tom Price mine in the Pilbara. “Around the world, the names and brands at leading international mining exhibitions are changing with both new and established global manufacturers using these events as opportunities to launch into new markets – and AIMEX is no different,” Reed Mining Events director Paul Baker said. “For visitors, AIMEX 2013 will be a unique opportunity to see new brands of equipment

LOCAL BUSINESS BUZZ

which are launching their products on the Australian market – and are determined to become a significant part of the mining industry here. “Over the past decade, AIMEX has seen significant growth in international pavilions from countries such as China, India, South Africa and Chile, as well as increasingly larger stands taken by global manufacturers from these countries, along with regions such as Eastern Europe and other parts of Asia.” Baker said that while AIMEX 2013 would strongly reflect this changing face of the mining equipment and service suppliers market, established and well-recognised makes would still be there in force. AIMEX 2013 is on track to attract more than 600 exhibitors, reflecting the very latest developments in mining technology – across all aspects of mining. “Following the outstanding success of AIMEX 2011 in Sydney, we have moved to further develop the coverage of the exhibition, so it reflects all areas of the mining sector. “This will include underground coal and hard rock mining, as well as all types of surface mining. T

The exploration season – WE WE WE

are we there yet?

he pre-Easter period traditionally marks the annual ramp-up of mineral exploration in Western Australia. But, with Easter well and truly passed we are only now seeing field activity increase. The slump in commodity prices, strong Aussie dollar, negative signals from China and a general global-economic malaise have seen investors shun resource stocks -with another period of strong downward pressure from February well into April. With bank accounts dwindling, companies are now taking a more considered approach to exploration. The rush to line up drill rigs has given way to mapping, re-sampling and data interrogation as companies apply more rigor to target generation. They are also now reviewing procedures and methodologies to tweak processes and explore more efficiently. As lower-cost work progresses, these 'smart' explorers are now getting back out on the ground. The 2013 exploration season has commenced, albeit subdued and looking distinctly different to exploration 12 months ago. Peta Libby, Managing Director of Digirock Exploration Geologists said while demand for drilling remained low, more senior technical geologists remained in demand. “It is also pleasing to see a surge in sales of our exploration management systems and procedures. With about 30 companies now using them, it is clear that companies are actively seeking to increase efficiency across all aspects of exploration field practice, compliance and safety,” he said. “This is an exciting time. Although arguably at the end of an exploration boom, we can expect to see more discoveries following the likes of Sirius (Nova-Bollinger), BHP (Venus) and Rox (Mt Fisher) as the mass of data collected during the boom is analysed and new rigor introduced.” For more information visit www.digirock.com.au or call +61 8 9472 6441. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TALK BACK

TALK BACK WITH

Dr. Lisa Chimes from hit television series Bondi Vet OCCUPATION: Veterinarian WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY? The Greek Islands - it's the right balance of relaxation, good food and holiday vibe. I love Mykonos for its beautiful beaches and delicious cuisine. Santorini has the most spectacular views and is the perfect place to unwind while watching that breathtaking sunset. WHAT WILL YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT? My hot water bottle. Gone are the days of an achy back on the plane - just ask the flight attendants to fill the hot water bottle and it provides hours of soothing relief for tired muscles. Just make sure the lid is done up tight - the soothing can quickly turn to torture if it leaks and you are either burnt or left soaking wet! CAN YOU GIVE OUR READERS YOUR TOP TRAVEL TIP? It sounds a little daggy, but use your compass on your smart phone! It's particularly helpful for navigating the narrow disorganised streets of old towns in Europe. All you need is your city map and compass and you'll find your destination while avoiding the roaming charges that come with using Google maps (and don't forget to turn off data roaming!). WHAT IS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT? Many years ago I was lying by the pool in Cape Town South Africa. As many women do, I had untied the straps of my bikini top to avoid getting those 'awful' strap-marks. We ordered food by the pool, which was soon delivered on heavy ceramic plates. For some reason, whether it was heatstroke or just a 'blonde' moment, I stood up on the sun lounger to take the food from the waiter - the next minute the whole thing flipped upside down and I went crashing to the ground. Not only did the plate smash and food went flying everywhere, I was lying on the floor in a very crowded pool area topless and in agony after falling on my knee. Those strap-marks I was so worried about never became an issue because I spent the rest of my trip in a hotel room on pain killers icing my knee (and hiding from sheer embarrassment). It goes to show that there really is nothing to gain from a tan! WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU IN 2013/14? We are expecting a new human family member so have no immediate plans for travel at this stage. The thought of travelling with a young child is terrifying to say the least. Spending time at home with the new addition and my dogs seems pretty appealing! n
