ustralia’s longest running festival is just around the corner and its promising to be bigger and better than ever! Celebrating 108 years of the magical culture that makes Fremantle so unique, the Fremantle Festival is back from Sunday October 27 to Sunday November 10. Created purely through the imagination of local artists, performers and schools, the Festival exudes a community spirit. Over 100 community events will be held throughout the festival including the Blessing of the Fleet, Wardarnji, the Black Box theatre, Norfolk Lane’s Youth Festival, Children’s Fiesta, Town Hall program and the Street Parade. The inspiring Wardarnji festival will be held on Saturday November 2 and is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Nyoongar people of Western Australia. The Wardarnji Aboriginal Cultural Festival features indigenous music, dance, art and food, making this an un-missable event. Another fantastic element is the reemergence of the Black Box theatre. Thursday to Sunday nights throughout the festival the Black Box theatre venue will host new work from both emerging and experienced theatre practitioners. Experimental and brimming with new ideas, this venue is all about pure theatre where the actors and the audience are so close they can touch. There will also be a Youth Festival, a celebration of the next wave of Fremantle talent. The stages of Norfolk Lane have seen performances by popular bands such as Tame Impala, San Cisco and Grace Woodroofe. The town hall program will be on every day in the centre of Fremantle on William Street. The town hall will be presenting comedy, music, fashion and exhibitions. And last but not least, one would be a fool to miss out on the Street Parade finale! On the Sunday between 3-6pm the 15 days of eclectic art, culture and celebration will culminate in floats of every size, shape and colour taking to the streets! Expect the fun, the loud, the colourful and the controversial. Visit www.fremantle.wa.gov.au/Festivals/Fremantle_Festival for more information. n

TRAVEL BUG BITES

Flying fancy

– is it worth the money? BY LAHNEE PAVLOVICH

P

remium class; that small section of the plane right up front where 12 or so lucky people sit smugly as you try to politely pass them to get to your not so premium seat up the back. Being an avid traveller I’ve experienced this exact scenario numerous times. But, the Air Asia flight home from Bali recently, was not one such time. Nope, this time I was one of those smug passengers getting (very) comfy in my Premium seat as the others squeezed past, carry on luggage in hand. Like most, I’d always wondered whether or not the Premium seats were worth the extra money. Well, now I know. A standard trip to Bali on Air Asia via Kuala Lumpur costs around $800 return depending on specials and when you fly. A seat in the Premium Class sets you back around $2400. Given that you are on the plane for about 8 hours I'm going to say YES! It is worth it! The Premium seats are not only double the size of an economy seat in every which way, they are also flat beds. You can choose how far you want to recline right down to a sleeping position. Not only that, you get a pillow and fluffy warm blanket for the trip, you get a meal, personalised service, a toilet that only 12 people use, the lights are dimmed, the cabin is quiet and sectioned off. Have I missed anything? So for an extra $1600, if you have the money, it is worth the splurge. Obviously not everyone can afford the upgrade, but with a cost margin not to extravagant, especially for the distance travelled, this trip could be the one you go all out on. And Air Asia was named the World’s Best Low Cost Airline in the annual World Airline

16

Issue 30

Survey by Skytrax for five consecutive years in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. So the quality is tip top. For people who already fly Premium Class frequently, you will know that one of the major benefits to choosing this seat is for the rest. In a reclined economy seat, you can get semi comfortable and doze a bit, in a Premium seat you can lie down and actually sleep. I slept for about 5 hours during the 8 hour journey and when I wasn’t sleeping, I was enjoying my breakfast or watching a movie on the tablet provided; still snuggled up in my blanket on half recline. So when it comes down to it, in answering the question ‘is it worth the extra money’,

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

I’ll let you decide. But for me, the feeling of getting off the plane at the end of the trip feeling rested and ready to face the day, is priceless. n

B

ali was never high on my list of places I wanted to see in the world. But it should have been. I spent a magnificent 2 weeks in this Indonesian island country and when I returned home, all I wanted to do was re-pack my bags and go back. Permanently! You see this is what Bali does. It gets in your veins, it pulses through your body and without even realising it - you’re hooked. The culture, the beauty, the proud people and even the independent dogs – this is one incredible island.

Crazy Kuta:

Ahhh, Kuta. Where do I begin! It’s a pulsing, brash, busy beachfront region filled with market places selling everything from Bintang singlets to Prada handbags and silver jewellery. It’s a world of its own and despite the bad rep it has earned itself among travellers, it’s also a place you simply can’t miss; because beneath the shady surface is a deep and flourishing region that captures your heart. Get past the craziness and a little Bali comes through. We arrived at the Denpasar airport to be greeted by hundreds (literally!) of Balinese men with signs. When we spotted our guy, he whisked us and our bags off to the car. Our holiday had begun! The first two nights of the 10 day trip were spent at the Sheraton Bali Kuta, a place that can only be described as a diamond in the rough. The dancers welcome you with frangipanis and sweet sounds of Balinese culture and it’s that moment you realise it’s going to be a good stay. Sheraton Bali Kuta is all about a new Kuta experience, and that pretty well sums it up. You have the hustle and bustle of the markets and crazy mopeds at your doorstep but

the peace and serenity inside the doors is exactly what you need. You can laze around with a cigar and a ‘wine of the world’ in the Lounge Bar, look out over the ‘infinity’ pool at the famous waves of Kuta Beach and all you see is the ocean, the hotel was designed with this in mind. Sheraton Bali Kuta wants you to experience the best of both worlds. The hot mess Kuta is known for and the luxurious touch the resort provides – like yin and yang. After a welcome drink we went to our room, one of 203 overlooking the property’s manicured gardens and Kuta Beach. Not a bad place to start the Bali adventure. Outside the resort is a whirlwind of markets, manned by locals vying for your coin in exchange for designer rip-offs and cultural artefacts. You can wander the streets for hours passing shop after shop after shop! Or you can jump on the back of a pony and

carriage and zip down laneways sharing the bustling street with mopeds and cars as the pretty pony trots in and out of the traffic like a pro. For a less hectic shopping experience, Sheraton is located directly above Beachwalk – an open air shopping complex, with more than 200 luxurious retail outlets and Bali's first Digital XXI Cineplex. When we needed to escape the bustle it was back to the resort for a massage - total bliss – followed by sunset gatherings – music, ambient light, pool dips, the setting sun and

One of Singapore's Top Beauty Bloggers, Roseanne Tang said the treatment at the Divana spa was a must-go for Singaporeans. “It's such a relaxing escape as if you're going to a home in the countryside,” Roseanne said.” The massage was done really well and the products and services available were world standard.” To learn more, visit www.FindYourFabulousThailand.com n

cocktails – an experience designed to be shared with fellow travellers. And then, when you get hungry, walk a few steps and take a seat ready to indulge completely in a taste of Italy at the resorts Bene Italian Kitchen. We experienced a degustation of flavours sitting at a table lit with nothing but glowing amber lanterns and ambient light dancing across the pool water. And it was some of the best Italian food we have ever had! Who would have thought? Honestly, 2 nights here simply wasn’t enough. We could have lazed around Kuta at the immaculate Sheraton much longer. And next trip, that’s exactly what we intend to do. Visit www.sheratonbalikuta.com

Serenity in Seminyak:

Next stop was Seminyak, not too far from Kuta but far enough that the markets were replaced with fancy designer boutiques, the restaurants cost a bit more and the people who inhabited the streets were a little less ‘Bintang’. Seminyak is an almost European inspired version of Bali. You can sip on Italian coffee and eat French croissants straight from the oven while reading the local paper. Or, you can do as we did and indulge in 6 blissful nights at a surf and yoga retreat. Welcome to Salt! The retreat itself was hidden down a laneway

right in the beating heart of Seminyak, and when you walked through those big wooden doors to be met by the smiling faces of the staff, a deliciously refreshing drink and cold towel, well, you’d officially entered the chilled zone. Salt combines yoga, surfing, gourmet organic dining, world-class spa treatments, and gorgeous tropical surroundings all under one roof. You can do as little or as much as you want here; think lazy afternoons by the pool, a constant flow of herbal tea and fresh juice, daily morning yoga, surfing the waves at some of Bali’s best breaks, then to top it all off, you get pampered daily! When we were shown to our room, a stunning space with even better views out over the pool, we felt right at home. Leaves were laid

out on the bed with our names written on them alongside luxurious creams and lotions, sunscreen and repellent; everything we would need for our stay. After we settled in it was down to the pool for a dip and a head, back and shoulder massage in the sunshine. And that was pretty much how we spent most afternoons here at Salt. Have you ever sprawled out under the stars and watched a movie play on a big makeshift screen perched snuggly in the tropical garden? Well after a communal dinner by candlelight that’s what the 11 of us did as a welcome to the week on the first night. Complete with organic popcorn I might add. And sleeping wasn’t a problem; we didn’t touch the TV in our room once, instead, listening to the sounds of nature is what lulled us into a peaceful sleep. And you certainly needed a restful night ready for the 7am yoga classes by the pool followed by 2 hour surf sessions with the Salt surf guys, Stefan, Moss and Joe. The waves in Bali are legendary. Avid surfers from around the globe converge here to catch the left and right handers; and to be part of that was truly memorable. It didn’t matter if you had surfed before or if you were a total beginner, the boys showed you the ropes and a damn good time out in the waves. And that feeling of having the warm ocean

rush over you, paddling onto the waves and the adrenalin of jumping up and riding the breaks was incredible! For me, the week in the waves reignited a passion for surfing I’d lost years ago. Throughout the week we rode white wash in 4ft swell, and rolling waves in 2ft swell from right out the back. By the end, everyone in the class had stood up and learnt something new. On the Wednesday, to break up the schedule a bit, the team took us on an amazing yacht trip to Nusa Lembongan. A 2 hour cruise through crystal clear water, with music playing while the sun shone down on you - it couldn’t be beat. Except maybe for the few hours spent anchored just off the island’s shore with the chance to snorkel, take a ride on a banana boat or test your balance on a stand up paddle board. Finished up with a delicious fresh lunch on board, it was one of our favourite days of the entire trip. One of the things that set Salt apart from other retreats in the area was the amount of free time you had. There was a schedule but it was flexible and you could do as much or as little as you wanted. And every afternoon there was ample time to lay about by the pool or venture out to the shops and sights of Seminyak. With 2 free dinner nights, there was also a chance to taste test some of the local and not so local cuisine. And let me just say that the Balinese can cook! We had some of the best food ever in the glamorous restaurants spilling out into the main street of Seminyak. And you can get anything your heart desires! Paired with $4 cocktails, it’s easy to get swept up in Bali fever. For the most part though, a few hearty meals and drinks aside, the week at Salt was about health, wellness and feeling great. It’s almost hard to describe the feeling of being at Salt. It centres you somehow.

You awaken something inside yourself and breathe in a new lease on life and a new way of appreciating it. This might have something to do with the blessing you receive at the beginning of the week. Or it might be the meditation by the pool each morning after your body gets a wonderful stretch from the yoga done in the open air, the sweet Bali breeze cooling your face. It could be the friends you make throughout the week as you share the journey together. Whatever it is, you take a pinch of Salt home with you. Visit www.saltretreat.com

Uniquely Ubud:

Ubud was the third and final stop on our Bali trip. Located in the mountains, about a 1.5 hour drive from Seminyak, Ubud is the real Bali. Unless you get out of the hustle and bustle of the coastal hotspots, ditch the highway and go back country, you will miss the real Bali. It’s in the villages you pass that you see the beating heart of this country. And each village is unique, because the main product you find in one will be different to the next. Silver for one village, kites the next, wood the one after – they spread the love and money around here. We arrived at Uma by Como on a misty afternoon and were welcomed by the friendly reception staff who showed us to our Terrace Room. The view out over the valley was magical, and the netting over the bed gave the room that extra sense of romance and seclusion. We woke both mornings to watch squirrels scatter through the rainforest as the fog gently rose up from the valley. All 46 rooms and suites at Uma exude the charm of a traditional Indonesian village, but

with a slightly contemporary feel. And Uma, meaning ‘Living House’, describes the setting of the property perfectly. Everything here was about letting nature in and becoming part of it. The gardens were vibrant and the open aired restaurant and pool lounge designed to let the outdoors in. It’s a nature lover’s paradise! And one might say a foodies paradise too. Both days we enjoyed breakfast in the Kemiri Restaurant and the cottage cheese pancakes were to die for! I had them both days! The menus combine local produce with techniques of classic Indonesian cuisine, with a little innovation whisked in. Lunch at the Uma Bar by the pool was just as scrumptious and we enjoyed mouth-watering traditional curries. Although it would have been easy to not leave the resort, a trip into the heart of Ubud was well worth it. Once again the markets intertwine with boutique shopfronts and the mopeds fight for space on the narrow roads. But the vibe is different here. Almost hippy, laid back and very inviting. And you simply can’t visit Ubud without a trip to Monkey Forest. It was like nothing we had seen before. The Monkey Forest of Padangtegal represents a sacred Balinese Hindu site, and temples adorn the area which is inhibited by hundreds of long-tailed macaques (the monkeys!). And all they want to do is get a banana. You can buy bananas throughout the forest and feed the monkeys, all the while the ‘keepers’ are nearby in case of a riot (it can happen). Today, it is not uncommon for the monkey forest to host 15,000 visitors per month, so the Padangtegal Wenara Wana Foundation has been established to protect the monkeys and their natural habitat. It really is an incredible place!

Another must do activity in Ubud is to get out on a moped. If you take the back roads and really delve deep into the heart of Bali and the surrounding villages it is pretty safe driving and truly a magical experience. We spent 3 hours just getting lost in the mountains and loved every minute of it. Lucky I had a decadent spa treatment booked that night at COMO Shambhal because it does get a little bumpy. Get wild:

At the end of the trip our trusty driver Gusti (who was with us from Salt) came to collect us from our haven in Ubud and return us to Kuta for one last night before the 6am flight home to Aus. On the drive back through the villages we stopped at the amazing Bali Zoo. Bali Zoo is located at Gianyar, about half hour drive from Ubud and I would go as far as to say it is now one of my favourite zoos. Bali Zoo is home to more than 650 animals including some very interesting and endangered Indonesian species, all very well cared for in hundreds of quality built eco-habitats on more than 22 acres of lush, natural landscape. Out first appointment for the day was with a Sumatran elephant and her Mahout, Reza. On our Elephant Expedition, Reza took us on a journey through Bali Zoo on top beautiful big 26-year-old Adelia, along windy tracks and out into the wilderness. We stomped through the

Wos River to the Bale Bengong, a pit stop where we, and Adelia, enjoyed some refreshing young coconut straight from the fruit. Then a leisurely trek up the hill to the area’s oldest village temple dating back over five centuries It’s hard to describe the feeling of being in such an area, rice paddies as far as the eye can see, hidden among towering vibrant green rainforest. Truly spectacular. And getting to feed Adelia at the end of the trek was amazing. Those big beautiful creatures love a bit of coconut and a scratch behind the ear. Like (very) big playful pups! The rest of the day was spent exploring the magical landscapes of the zoo and the animals

that call it home. We held birds, said hi to Jacky, the famous orang-utan, and enjoyed a delicious lunch in the Okavango Restaurant while watching lions be fed, before another amazing (and free!!!) animal encounter with the binturong, a kind of bear cat, and…a 10 month old lion cub! Simply put, this was another great day in an amazing place! Visit www.bali-zoo.com

Bye bye Bali:

The holiday is over, I'm back at work and as I write this story up, I can think of only one way to sum up Bali, and that’s Gusti’s way – Bali is “exactly nice”. n

FIGHTING FIT

This is INSANE Y’all! WHEN YOU ARE STRAPPED FOR TIME, HAVE NO ACCESS TO A GYM, WORK IRREGULAR, LONG HOURS, FITTING IN A WORKOUT IS TOUGH. OR IS IT?

U

S fitness guru Shaun-T has developed a 60 day, do-it-at-home workout DVD program INSANITY. And it’s insane! In fact, it’s been said that INSANITY is the hardest workout programme ever put on DVD. Shaun T will push you past your limits with 10 workout discs packed with plyometric drills on top of nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance, and ab and core training moves. No equipment or weights needed. Just the will to get the hardest body you've ever had. Are you ready to dig deep? Your Editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a chat to Shaun-T about what to expect. Q. Hey Shaun, can you tell me a bit about yourself and how you got into fitness? A. When I was in college, school work and my schedule got in the way, and I was like "I can't do it today." I didn't even think about staying fit really. At one point I was 50 pounds overweight. I looked back and was like, this is ridiculous. I need to stop making excuses. That's actually what propelled me into becoming the fitness instructor that I am today.

Q. Why is it so important for people to live healthy lifestyles and to get fit? A. There is nothing more important than how someone treats themselves both inside and outside. Your body is your equipment. It's a machine. You have to keep your machine healthy. Q. What’s the difference between your programs and other programs out there? A. INSANITY is training that utilises your own body weight to get the results you want. This type of training gives you strength and endurance in the same workout. No gym, no weights, no equipment, just your own body’s resistance. Q. Can you tell me a bit about the style of training people will be doing in the INSANITY program and why it works? A. INSANITY works because I took traditional interval training and flipped it on its head. I call it MAX Interval Training. In the workouts, you do longs bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you

alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals. I can be tough but my goal is to keep people motivated and to push everyone to do their best. Q. What’s the most important thing to remember when starting out on the program? A. Stay committed each and every day. No one should have to persuade you to do it. If you're hesitant or have a minute of doubt, INSANITY probably isn't for you. It's about 40 minutes per day at first. When you get to month two, the max interval part, I'd map out an hour each day, which includes stretching and cooling down. That hour a day will become a gift to yourself. I've had people who weigh more than 300 pounds do it, and they just modify it. You mostly need to be mentally ready. Q. How will people feel throughout the program from start to finish? A. It may be hard at first but just stay with it. People feel amazing when they finish. Not just because of their physical results but also the great accomplishment of staying with it and doing something truly positive. Finishing is a badge of honour. The number one thing to remember is to stay committed, even though you will sometimes lose self-motivation because it’s tough, every time you finish a workout pat yourself on the back and know you're one step closer! Q. I’m about to embark on this journey myself, any tips on how to get through the 60 days? A. The first two weeks is when we see the highest percentage of quitting. And it's because they are just totally exhausted. I suggest those people do that day's workout the best they can. Q. Any other information you’d like to add? A. Dig Deep! Visit www.beachbody.com.au (Check out our next edition to see how your Editor Lahnee went on the INSANITY challenge!) n

uinoa with grass fed protein powder for breakfast. Dominated. Organic green tea – yes, currently sipping. Acai berry. Ahhhh – say what? There is a new trend emerging with the latest super foods to eat and keep on our radar, but what about the bad stuff not to touch. Here are the top 4 foods that you should never eat again. Avoid them like you do your ex.

The cold side of cold cuts: A bite of your BBQ meat lover pizza might seem like your tastebuds are entering nirvana after a weekend of debauchery and long necks. Salami, ham, roast beef and other deli meats are poor quality, packed with sodium and made from animals raised on hormones and antibiotics. Strong evidence was unravelled that eating processed meat is linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer and a suggested link with lung, stomach, prostate and oesophageal cancer.

Sweet deception: Yes I get it you’re sweet enough so you cut the sugar and go artificial. Rookie mistake. Not only have fake sweeteners been linked to people not losing weight but they contain a list of alleged medical issues to promote a seizure. Aspartame which is found in most diet drinks and chewing gum has been linked to a number of diseases, can impair the immune system, and is even known to cause cancer. If it is made in a lab, it's probably better to avoid it.

For all those soy latte sipping health fanatics, sorry to pop your soy bubble but this is not a healthy food group. All soy isn't bad albeit. However you don’t want to be touching the isolate (a refined, often genetically-modified form of soy that pops up in a lot of soy-based products). Processed soy boosts the hormone estrogen in your body and some research has shown that it can increase the risk of cancer, weight gain, acne and infertility in women.

The white stuff: It's unfortunate so many peeps think the right fuel for starting their day means grabbing a doughy white roll or dunking their spoon in a bowl of cereal. When you eat a lot of sugar, the carbohydrates get used up quickly and your blood sugar shoots up. As a result, your brain quits making orexin, and without this neuropeptide you will feel bloated and want to crawl under your desk to have a nap.

tudies of obesity and diets are all very important; however do they really give us an answer to get the results we want? Truth is that you can only get out what you put in as the saying goes. of organised exercise? Are you eating at least 2 fruits and 5 vegetables each day? Are you moving at work? Before you go to have lunch, ask your-self “is this healthy?” 3. Keep track Behavioural studies have found both low-tech paper logs and wireless monitoring systems to be a benefit to tracking your health. It’s about setting and monitoring healthy eating, physical activity, recording body weight, recording foods eaten and logging exercise that provides objective feedback on how well you are changing your habits. Keep it real and keep honest. 4. Support Groups Studies document the benefits of encouragement by others. Being part of a group, whether an exercise group, a formal support group or even a virtual group help you share triumphs, bemoan setbacks and strategies solutions. n

CHIT CHAT

Rob Schneider Inflight Publishing Editor Lahnee Pavlovich has a chat with funny man Rob Schneider about his upcoming Live tour around the land down under. And yes, he is just as lovely and just as hilarious on the phone as he is on the screen!

R

OB, THANKS FOR HAVING A CHAT TO ME TODAY. NOW YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR LIVE

STAND-UP TOUR TO AUSTRALIA IN OCTOBER, YOU HAVE VISITED US BEFORE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PLACE? Australia is actually one of my favourite

places to go and one of the only places my wife gets excited about visiting. It’s like the size of the US with the population of Los Angeles. The food is nice, the people have a great sense of humour. Actually most of the artwork I own is from Australia; I have quite a few pieces of Aboriginal artwork. They are so beautiful.

And I love the adventurous spirit Aussies have. Only about 20% of Americans have a passport, pretty much every Aussie has one. They have this sense of travel. I’ve never been to a place anywhere in the world and not ran into an Aussie. In fact, I was literally on a glacier in Iceland, on a snow mobile, covered in ice gear and this

guy comes up to me and says ‘how you goin mate, you know where we can get a good beer around ere?’. It’s great! AND DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT? Australia is just so enormous. There’s a lot I haven’t seen yet but I'm really excited to perform at the Opera House, it’s an iconic venue and you have to be an accomplished performer to get the chance to perform there so that’s a big honour. Sydney Harbour is one of the prettiest in the world. I also love Perth, the people are great and Melbourne is good too because it’s one of the only places I can buy a suit that fits me. There are so many short Greeks in Melbourne, wide and short like me – so the suits fit perfectly! Brisbane is also very lovely. YOU ARE PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR YOUR COMEDIC ACTING ROLES, YOU’VE DONE MOVIES LIKE DEUCE BIGALO, GROWN-UPS, THE ANIMAL – WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE ROLE TO PLAY AND WHY? Duece Bigalow was a lot of fun. Big Stan, the prison movie was great and I think doing 50 First Dates was probably one of my favourites. The Hot Chick was pretty funny playing a teenage girl. I don’t think I could do any of that again though. It will actually be pretty fun when my little girl grows up and gets to see those movies – but not until she’s about 15. THIS MONTH YOU ARE IN AUSTRALIA WITH YOUR LIVE TOUR, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE? The show is really just different forms of midlife crisis. Stuff people can relate to. I mean my wife and I had an accidental baby 10 months ago and it turned out to be one of the best things to happen in my life. Most accidents are. And of course there are a lot of jokes in the show. THE TYPES OF CHARACTERS YOU PLAY ARE PRETTY OUT THERE AND VERY FUNNY, IS YOUR STAND-UP SIMILAR? I think the stand-up has aged better; it’s a little more mature but still inane, a bit dirty and naughty. It’s hard to shock people anymore, they see so much, but I want people to laugh, and have a laugh at themselves as well. I try to mix it all up and have a bit of fun. YOU STARTED OFF DOING COMEDY AS A TEENAGER THEN MOVED INTO THE BIG FILMS, BUT WENT BACK TO STAND-UP IN 2011 WAS IT? It was actually 2009 but I’d gotten good at it by 2011. AND WHAT DO YOU PREFER, STAND-UP OR FILM? I really enjoy doing stand-up; it’s challenging performing to a live audience. And it’s wonderfully contemporary. No show is the same and you have this amazing chance to connect with the audience and bring them together. Then with film, there is something immortal about it. The magic of film is that the cameras capture these legends and you see a reflection

32

Issue 30

“What is the real Rob Schneider like, well I'm smarter, better mannered, more handsome. I think I'm probably a bit more serious, dry, shorter!” of them on the screen, even after they are long gone. If you can make people laugh in film, that’s a rare thing, and people remember it for ever. And you have the ability to enhance the experience with music, editing, and other actors. It’s an incredible process, and you know they say if Shakespeare was alive, he’d be a film maker. The downside to film is that it’s expensive, has its ups and downs and it can break even the greatest. Show business is tough. Stand up is rewarding, you are standing in front of an audience that are all excited to see you. WHAT ABOUT THE ROB SCHNEIDER WE DON’T SEE ON STAGE OR ON THE BIG SCREEN? Well hopefully I'm smarter, better mannered, more handsome. I think I'm probably a bit more serious, dry, shorter than on screen. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE? I want to do a few more movies, but I don’t feel a crushing determination like when I started out. There are still things I want to try and accomplish. But hanging out with my wife and daughter is my top priority. They are coming on this tour with me. I'm really excited about that; getting to share this experience with my family. In fact, this may just be my last Live tour. I'm doing it out of love to the fans in Aus who have always supported my movies. n

Following a sold out tour in 2011, Emmy-nominated actor Rob Schneider, well known for his trademark blend of character and comedic acting, returns to Australia for his national tour. Schneider began writing jokes as a teenager and made his major network debut in 1987 on The David Letterman Show. Then it was into the big time with a host of films under his belt including Deuce Bigalow, Big Stan, 50 First Dates, The Hot Chick, The Animal and countless others with long-time pal Adam Sandler for Happy Madison Productions. Now, after nearly 20 years, Schneider returns to stand-up and is bringing his antics down under. MONEY MATTERS

key steps

TO BECOMING RICH THROUGH PROPERTY WITH STEPHEN ZAMYKAL

Step 1 – Plan your strategy. Every journey begins with a single step. Who are you as an individual? How are you currently situated financially, and what do you want to achieve through investing? This knowledge helps to build a strategy that is right for you. Step 2 – Fund your properties. Setting up your loans so you can maximise the advantage of lending criteria is an essential element of any great property investment strategy. You have the opportunity to save money on interest and maximise your borrowing potential, while remaining in an unrestricted and flexible loan structure. The leverage loan concept ticks every box when looking at your loan structure.

Step 3 – Buy well. Buying well is the most crucial component of a highly successful career in property investing. Target the right properties that will give you the maximum capital growth to achieve your goals. Find the 5 per cent of property that fits the bill for a highly desirable long-term capital growth investment. I believe 95% of properties are not good investments. We have a 58 point checklist to ensure astute property selection. Ensure you have a strict criteria. Step 4 – Manage your portfolio. Property investment should be treated like any other small business venture. Ensure you are making the most money you can now and in the long term. Don’t make the mistake of getting emotionally attached to properties – or

Making the most out of your investment property is serious business and having the right agent working for you is paramount.

A cruel twist of fate has brought down the savviest of businesspeople and investors in all types of industries. MINING & INDUSTRY

Quality on Show at the AMEC Convention

W

ith the tightening of investment capital in the mining and exploration sector continuing, a renewed focus on quality and value was on show at this year’s Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) convention in Perth. Suppliers may have outweighed miners and explorers but the cream had certainly risen to the top, with successful explorers Sirius Resources and Doray Minerals both with booths in the room. Exploration consultants, Digirock, also showed their support for AMEC with a stylish booth which saw much networking and discussion about attendees’ forth coming exploration plans. Digirock’s business card raffle was a hit, with many keen for the chance to walk out the door with a pair of quintessentially Australian boots, the RM Williams Craftsman. Like RM Williams, Digirock are renowned for putting quality boots on the ground and interestingly,

the similarities don’t stop there. Noble’s Nob Gold Mine in Tennant Creek is part of the beginning story of both companies with their subsequent success coming from an uncompromised focus on quality and a relentless desire to meet the needs of their clients. Although the mining and exploration industry has had a quieter year than usual and the northern field season is coming to an end there is still much to be done before exploration is curtailed over the Christmas period. For assistance with exploration project management and the provision of contract staff to get your projects to completion before the big rains hit contact Digirock on (08) 9477 3747 or info@digirock.com.au. Don’t get caught short for next season; Digirock can also help with exploration planning and safety audits, exploration procedure manuals and the provision of office geologists. n

Ferret’s Online Safety W

orkplace safety is a major focus in the mining industry. In fact, it’s an entity of its own. Safety messages

are played to staff repetitively everyday, safety officers are dedicated to workers’ health and well-being, and seminars, conferences and events are continuously being developed around workplace safety for miners. And rightly so. With risks like cave-ins, gas explosions and chemical leaks, wouldn’t

you want to know how to protect yourself if something were to go wrong? But have you ever considered the online safety of staff on mine sites? The rapid pace of digital media is something that shouldn’t be overlooked, especially because mobile devices are so easily accessible by anyone in society at any time of the day. So what does online safety mean when it comes to the workplace?

Business Development Leader of Ferret.com. au, Tony Haydar, explains how unsafe practices in the virtual world can be just as damaging as in the physical one, in particular, within the mining and industrial sectors. “Participating in unsafe practices online may result in confidential company information being leaked, a computer virus could shut down your systems or your business’ reputation could be tarnished by mistakes made on social media,”

OOL-FIT is a corrosion free pre insulated light weight plastic pipe system; designed to provide protection insulating the water supply for safety showers and eye wash stations. The ABS inner pipe is insulated with high quality PUR foam in addition to a robust and UV resistant outer PE pipe. The smooth inner surface of the ABS pipe provides for minimal pressure loss, while the low thermal conductivity of plastic and the insulation ensure low energy, prevents water heating up and reduces the running cost of the piping system. The 3-in-1 construction also reduces installation time to a minimum. Environmental sustainability with COOL-FIT optimises the life cycle assessment reducing the CO2 footprint when compared to metallic piping systems. Tony said. “If your employees operate machinery remotely via a computer and they misuse the system, it could lead to a loss of productivity and wasted resources to repair it. Employees could also be at risk of losing their job if they use the internet or social media inappropriately,” he said. Planking is one social media fad that became a scary reality for many Australians after planking posts went viral. Industrial workers were the topic of planking controversy, as well as celebrities and there was even a death suspected to be caused by the craze. Tony explains why it’s important for the mining and manufacturing industries to train and educate staff on how to utilise safe practices online to avoid accidents or loss of productivity. “Staff can be educated by incorporating training into the culture of the organisation,” he said. “Safety training is a key aspect of any mining business and this practice needs to be broadened to incorporate new technologies.”

Tony suggests implementing internal policies, rules and regulations for employees to follow when online. “Policies could include how to represent the company online or information on dealing with suspicious emails,” he said. “Employees can also attend training days, information sessions or industry trade shows to learn more and it’s a good idea for employees to read industry magazines or online publications to keep up to date on current online safety practices, viruses and advice.” The use of online business directories like Ferret.com.au is a safe way to purchase products online. These directories have a visible profile for each business and they provide contact details so you can contact them directly. Online directories also helps to compare prices, this means you can find the best deals and prevent your business from getting ripped off. Visit www.ferret.com.au n

dust: A CAUSE FOR CONCERN

T

he risk to human health can be severe in situations where dust is poorly controlled. Choosing an effective dust suppression solution is an effective way to mitigate the problem. People living or working in close proximity to environments that produce substantial levels of dust are vulnerable to significant health risks. Managing Director of Tecpro Australia Graeme Cooper said areas such as mining environments or in corridors where coal is being transported or offloaded can experience problems with fugitive dust. “For people close by, some types of dust

can cause irritation and inflammation such as rhinitis or bronchitis. Irritable dust can usually be eliminated from the body by its natural defence system such as coughing or sneezing. But there are also some types of dust that are respirable which can cause irreversible harm,” he said. Mr Cooper said the degree of potential harm is influenced by a number of factors. These include the chemical or mineralogical composition of the dust, its concentration, the size and shape of the particles and the length of time a person is exposed to the dust. “The types of dust that are harmful to humans

include silica, coal, asbestos, synthetic mineral fibres, cotton, wood, animal and vegetable dusts,” Mr Cooper said. “They can cause problems ranging from allergic reactions to breathlessness or in the case of asbestos dust, cancer. And where organic dusts accumulates – such as around flour, grain, or wood milling – an explosion hazard is another potential risk. “In these types of environments, a spark or hot surface could ignite the dust, causing a serious blast.” Visit www.tecpro.com.au n

YOUR PLACE

DIY bathroom renovation Should you do-it-yourself? FROM WWW.HOMEDESIGNDIRECTORY.COM.AU

D

IY renovations can be a satisfying and cost saving process, but should you do it all yourself? Most DIY renovators do the project management, demolition, colour scheme selection, source the fixtures and fittings, remove and install most fittings such as hooks and towel rails and paint. However, unless they are really skilled, they contract the specialist trades of bricklaying, electrics, plumbing and tiling.

Does your bathroom need a full redesign or just a makeover? What to do and how much to spend on your DIY bathroom project really depends on how much it is used. A family using one bathroom warrants more upgrade and facilities (like double showers and basins) than a one person bathroom. Careful re-design can make a bathroom more spacious and provide more storage however changing the configuration costs money because it usually means new plumbing, and possibly alterations to wall construction, windows and doors. To see whether your bathroom should be reconfigured to make it more practical, you can buy one of the many simple computer

42

Issue 30

programs for creating house plans and play with different layouts. Alternatively, make paper shapes of bathroom components (to scale) and move them around a scale drawing of the room space. Once done, draw up elevations with wall dimensions and positions of existing doors and windows etc. If your bathroom needs to be reconfigured, you may have to strip it back to the floors and walls and rebuild it from new. But if the layout is fine and the waterproofing is sound, you can renovate your bathroom relatively cheaply. A dramatic difference can be made by simply changing the colour scheme, re-tiling over the old floor tiles, replacing cabinets and replacing the toilet. There are even bathroom resurfacing products that can put a new surface over old coloured tiles or chipped and dated bathtubs.

How long do bathroom renovations take? If you use a specialist bathroom renovation professional the bathroom is likely to be out of commission for 4 weeks.

Renovation legals Whether you DIY or not, you don't need council approval to renovate a bathroom

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

unless you significantly alter the plumbing or alter the windows.

The fabrication sequence The usual sequence when renovating a bathroom is • Strip-out (with pipes sealed) • Rough-in of plumbing and electrics • Rendering walls • Waterproofing • Fit out for shower, vanity, toilet • Tiling • Shower screen installation • Final electrical wiring • Final plumbing • Vanity and bench tops installation • Tap installation • Painting It's best to consult trade's people about how and where to waterproof. In older homes not all areas were waterproofed and problems can arise. You can remove tiles and waterproof and re-tile, or waterproof with old tiles in situ. The building code requires only the shower area to be waterproofed, but plenty of builders recommend spending more money and waterproofing a large portion (or all) of a bathroom. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.
