Perth Airport has implemented a new slot control system from the 31st March 2013 (previously predicted from 1st February 2013) which appears to have restricted the number of delays we are experiencing compared with previously particularly in the peak periods. Lets all hope that it works better than the old system but it still doesn’t get away from the fact that with the huge passenger volume increase through Perth the third runway is an essential part of infrastructure going forward which is now being acknowledged by the Perth Airport and the politicians alike. Skippers’ first Fokker 100 aircraft has arrived and is being commissioned for service; it has 108 seats and all the latest avionic technology. The second Fokker 100 was due to arrive at the end of July. Skippers Kimberley Air Service routes servicing Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are being well patronised by the local community and provide a fast and comfortable journey to the remote locations. Unfortunately the Fitzroy Crossing airstrip has needed to be re-sealed and was closed from July for 13 weeks. The coastal network changes incorporating extra services to Carnarvon (Thursday afternoon) and all direct Perth to Shark Bay / Monkey Mia services are being well received. We commenced an additional Shark Bay / Monkey Mia service on Wednesday mornings making 5 services for the week. Skippers Aviation continues to carry out the Kambalda Regular Public Transport services on behalf of Cobham (bookings and departures are from Cobhams terminal) however, this has now been reduced to Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Skippers’ package holidays through Discover West Holidays have been well received incorporating all our destinations especially the promotion to Monkey Mia. Motive Travel also has a number of tours for all sporting events. Skippers Road Transport arm continues to be very active in the resource industry. Burswood Car Rentals have a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service which can be ordered online or direct and in most cases their service is cheaper than the better known brands. We once again remind you that we have wireless internet available to our passengers in the Perth terminal, free of charge. Please enquire upon checking in. Enjoy your journey with us today, we feel privileged to provide this service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

in WA

E

xperience Extraordinary is Western Australia’s state tourism brand – and the list below provides an impressive justification to this claim. Last issue we made our way through A –M, this edition discover some extraordinary experiences from N-Z. Ningaloo Reef World Heritage Area: The world’s largest fringing reef accessible from the shore is home to a myriad of marine life all year round. It’s also one of the best places in the world to swim with the world’s largest fish, the Whale Shark. Whale Sharks can grow up to 16 metres long and migrate through the region from April to July each year. Outback adventure: With the largest outback expanse in the country, adventure options are endless in WA. It’s also one the best destinations in the world to view the stars at night – you have never seen so many.

Perth skyline. Image courtesy Tourism WA.

Perth: Enjoying more hours of sunshine each year than any other Australian capital city, it’s also home to Kings Park and Botanic Garden, which at more than 400 hectares, is one of the largest inner city parks in the world. Quokkas: This unique Rottnest icon is only found in WA. Take a trip to ‘Rotto’ to see these furry creatures, and while you’re there enjoy some of the world’s finest beaches and bays. Rowley Shoals: The Rowley Shoals Marine Park lies 300 kilometres west of Broome. Made up of three coral atolls, with untouched coral gardens, amazing marine life and clear lagoons, the Rowley Shoals is a true watery wilderness. Shark Bay World Heritage Area: One of only 16 sites world-wide that satisfy all four natural criteria for World Heritage listing: natural beauty, biological diversity, ecological processes and links to the earth’s history.

Aerial view of Voyages El Questro Homestead located on the Chamberlain River near Kununurra

Truffles: One of the world’s most expensive edible commodities, the industry in Manjimup is now producing more black truffles than the rest of Australia combined – last season a staggering 3,100 kilograms! WA locals can enjoy fresh truffles from June to August, as well as an annual festival held in Manjimup to celebrate this gastronomic delight. Underwater wonderland: With thousands of kilometres of coastline, hundreds

of nearby islands, abundant and varied marine life, a mix of tropical and temperate climates and numerous shipwrecks just offshore, the diving and snorkelling in WA is unbeatable. Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk: 10 minutes north of Walpole on WA’s south coast, this was the first walk trail of its kind in the world. At 600 metres long and 40 metres above ground, it has been specially designed to minimise impact on the forest. Walking among the tall forest trees is a breathtaking experience.

Wildflowers, Australia’s Golden Outback

Wildflowers: WA is home to the largest collection of wildflowers in the world, boasting more than 12,000 species, 60% of which can’t be found anywhere else on earth. The wildflower season starts in June in the north of the State and sweeps south, finishing by November – meaning you can enjoy different species at various times and in various destinations. Xmouth: Okay….it doesn’t officially start with an ‘x’ but Exmouth rates a mention because of all of the extraordinary wildlife, landscape and experiences on offer including World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park. Yallingup: Just a short drive south west of Dunsborough, within the Margaret River wine region, Yallingup is a popular holiday destination for surfing, fishing and relaxing. Zebedee Springs – El Questro Wilderness Park: A naturally hot thermal pool of water, warmed by water rising through the earth from the tectonic plates below, these springs are just one of the many natural wonders that can be found in the Kimberley region of WA. n

The North West Festival is set to rock Port Hedland this month

PORT HEDLAND WILL COME ALIVE ON AUGUST 24 FOR THE NORTH WEST FESTIVAL.

B

ringing artists together from across the country, the festival puts on one hell of a show for WA’s mining town. Having firmly established itself as a 'must attend' event on the calendar of the Pilbara region, the show will see Aussie musicians Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Grinspoon, 360, The Black Seeds, Abbie May, Bluejuice and Vance Joy take to the stage at the Port Hedland Turf Club for a day and night of musical indulgence. Inflight Publishing writer Olivia Leach had a chat to Melbourne singer/songwriter Vance Joy about the festival and his recent success with ARIA topping single ‘Riptide’. Vance Joy

SO FIRST OFF, YOUR EP GOD LOVES YOU WHEN YOU’RE DANCING, AND SPECIFICALLY YOUR SONG ‘RIPTIDE’ HAS BECOME A TREMENDOUS HIT. HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN THE SONG STARTED TOPPING THE CHARTS? DID YOU EXPECT THIS SORT OF SUCCESS? No I didn’t at all. I had a good feeling about the songs as I was writing them. They were catchy but I wasn’t expecting this much success. But I guess you just put something out into the universe with the hope that other people will like it. YOU PERFORMED AT SPLENDOR THIS YEAR AND I HEARD YOU PACKED OUT THE GW MCKELLEN STAGE ON THE SATURDAY. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? It was really cool, so many people turned up! I normally perform to a crowd of around 300 people so splendor was definitely a step up. The whole tent was full of people and I was standing back stage watching the performances before me, getting more and more nervous. It was hectic. YOU’VE HAD A HECTIC COUPLE OF MONTHS, PERFORMING ACROSS THE US AND CANADA AS WELL AS AUSTRALIA, DO YOU GET A DIFFERENT REACTION FROM THE CROWD OVERSEAS THEN YOU DO AT HOME IN AUSTRALIA? Well of course there is a lot more awareness here but it’s also nice to perform to a crowd who doesn’t know you. It’s kind of cool to be anonymous. The performance feels fresher. Not so much pressure! Also even though they didn’t know me, music is universal. A good melody connects to everyone on different levels. Bernard Fanning

ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE YOU’RE ALSO HEADLINING THE NORTH WEST FESTIVAL IN WA THIS YEAR, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THAT? I’m excited as! I’ve never been to that part of the country so I am excited to see what that part of the world is like. Also, the lineup is fantastic; people like Paul Kelly, 360, Grinspoon etc. So, I’m really looking forward to seeing them perform and hopefully meeting a couple of the bands. THIS MONTH YOU’LL BE ON THE ROAD WITH YOUR OWN ‘RIPTIDE’ TOUR WHICH IS SOON TO BE SOLD OUT. WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM THE TOUR? Well this tour is me and also my band. I’ve got a couple of new songs that I’m going to perform which aren’t on the EP so no one will have heard those yet. And, of course there

will be all the songs from my EP. My band and I have been working a lot together lately so we are definitely getting more comfortable performing which should make a difference in this tour. I CAN IMAGINE YOU’VE GOT A BUSY YEAR AHEAD OF YOU, WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED? CAN WE EXPECT NEW RELEASES FROM VANCE JOY ANY TIME SOON? Well an album is definitely on the cards; hopefully I will be releasing a new album sometime next year. I’ve been working a lot on writing new material and also rehearsing with the band. That’s probably the two main things on the agenda.

Be enchanted

he enchanting musical ensemble Celtic Woman returns to Australia next January bringing with them the hauntingly beautiful sounds of the Irish. Inflight Publishing Editor Lahnee Pavlovich caught up with Solo Celtic Violinist Máiréad Nesbitt. TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW THIS JOURNEY BEGAN FOR YOU? I started playing the violin both in the classical and traditional genres when I was six. I had been playing the piano, whistle recorder and mandolin since I was four but always wanted to play the violin. So my journey began with being a part of a very musical family and then carrying that with me. I studied piano and violin in London and Ireland and became a professional violinist with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Ireland. I kept expanding and touring with various artists and shows from there. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PERFORMING? The freedom; I never get that feeling of freedom anywhere else, it's like taking flight! I love having the freedom to play the way I play, to improvise and to do what I love

doing the most.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND CELTIC WOMAN AND HOW DID THE GROUP COME ABOUT? CW started in 2004 with David Downes our musical director and composer and a great team of people putting together a special DVD for PBS. It was initially for one night only but here we are nine years later. Myself and Chloe have been there since the very beginning. Something amazing happened on stage then and has continued to happen ever since.

LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC CREATES A VERY SPECIAL FEELING, WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS? I think it is the mix of what we do musically first that inspires people. Each of us comes from a different background and takes it to another level in our solos firstly and then together in a blend that people know and love. The mix of Celtic, traditional, classical and contempory styles means that there is something for everyone. We Irish love story telling and this comes across in our songs. The melodies can go from hauntingly beautiful to fast and powerful and I think

people love this variety. It brings people on a journey away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT AUDIENCES CAN EXPECT FROM YOUR UPCOMING TOUR? Audiences can expect to be taken on a journey through different musical styles, visual elements on stage with lighting, beautiful gowns, staging, our incredible band, drummers, choir, bagpiper and dancer. We put on a show that ranges from the intimate to the dynamic and explosive. Celtic Woman will perform at the Riverside Theatre, Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre January 24. WIN! WIN!

We have tickets for the Perth show! To win, email Lahnee@inflightmagazine.com.au with CELTIC in the subject line and tell me why you love Celtic Woman. Entries close October 28.

of the information you need to plan a fun time in the city and when you're ready to make it happen you can do so right here on our site. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY IN THE OFFICE FOR YOU? The first thing I do on any morning is to come social stream, and check the analytics for the site to see how our audience is responding to our content. I want to know what questions they have, what's interesting to them. I also spend a lot of time reading about the city and talking to people - the goal is to know what's hot and what's happening at any given time. So I basically divide my day between learning about what's new and interesting, plus planning new stories, and consistently coming up with new and fun ways to cover the city that I love.

Laura’s top five ‘must do’ experiences? 1. Times Square. It can be hectic and crowded but there is nothing else like it in the world. I recommend walking through it at night, when the lights are out in full force.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE VISIT NEW YORK? Because there's no other city quite like it in the world! The best and brightest come here so it's an incubator for talent and competition and that breeds really creative, transcendental experiences in everything from shows to shopping to cuisine. Plus, it's this fantastic melting pot with people from all over the

world. Within the distance of a single city block you can find yourself in a completely different cultural community! I learn something new every day that I live here. There's also this sense that anything is possible here. I have lived here for over a decade and every time I fly into the city, I always look for the skyline because it never ceases to thrill me. n

2. See a show. Nothing says "New York" quite like a Broadway show. I recommend doing dinner (my favourite restaurant near the theatre is a Mexican place called Toloache on 50th and 8th) and then seeing the show of your choice. 3. Go to the Met, specifically the Temple of Dendur. There is so much to see and do at the Met it would take years to see it all, but if there is one thing not to miss it's the Temple of Dendur. 4. Go shopping on 5th Avenue. There are so many great places to shop in the city, but 5th avenue is home to New York's quintessential department stores and some of the world's most famous brands and is quite an experience. Of course, my favourite place to shop is among the one-of-a-kind boutiques in Soho. 5. Go out for real New York pizza at Lombardi's. You can't come to New York and NOT have a slice of pizza and Lombardi's is where NYC-style pizza was born back in 1905.

L

A is full of exclusivity, where paparazzi prey on the glamorous as they dine in top notch venues dotted across the balmy coastal city. LA boasts some of the best shopping in the world and now, it’s not just the A-listers who get to experience this slice of boutique heaven. Australian Karine Bulger has opened it up for all of us with her boutique tour company that offers an all-inclusive VIP experience in Los Angeles - LA Experience. On exclusive 6-day tours, LA Experience guests are hosted to a luxurious getaway where they enjoy an insider’s view of Los Angeles; jampacked full of shopping, entertainment and glamour. Karine and her team lead each tour as your personal 24/7 LA shopping 'concierge'. With over 15 years of experience in the travel, events and DMC business in both the Australian and American markets, Karine saw an opportunity to introduce people to the Los Angeles she knows and loves - while adding some fantastic shopping and luxury experiences into the mix. “I used to live in the US, my husband is American, and we lived in Santa Monica. I got to understand the retail landscape and it opened my eyes to the selections and the fact there is so much more in the US than

in Australia, and often much cheaper. Not only that, you could access shopping 24/7 in the US. Things didn’t close by 5.30pm, shops stayed open much longer and retails outlets were always buzzing,” Karine said. “I wanted to create something, do something different, so I used this knowledge I had and just over a year ago I started working on the fundamentals of LA Experience. “I went across to LA and spent a lot of time setting everything up, picking the best shops and the best hotels, restaurants. I was thrilled that we got the Montage as our accommodation venue, its outstanding, it’s immaculate and it’s definitely 5 star luxury.” LA is all about access and being "in the know". And Karine is definitely in the know. “Through our well established network in LA we have designed an itinerary that offers unique and exclusive experiences. Many of the restaurants and bars we have on offer are impossible to get a reservation at but as our guest you will be living like a celeb! Equally some of the fashion experiences and stores we visit aren't available to the common traveller; it is our connection that allows you these experiences.” And as a guest of LA Experience, as soon as your plane touches down at LAX, you are in Karine’s capable hands.

The tour Day 1: - Your driver will be waiting in the arrival halls for you at LAX. - You will be introduced to Beverly Hills, Hollywood and Downtown LA, and enjoy a light lunch along the way. - Stop off at the historic Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre and the must-see Walk of Fame. - Drive by some famous movie star homes on your way to indulge in some shoe shopping at Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, see diamonds and gems galore in the jewelry district and visit the J Brand outlet shop.

Day 2: - Today you are off to the Outlets – all bursting with holiday sales. You have over 160 stores to choose from including Coach, Kate Spade, Burberry, DKNY, Gap, Nine West, Nike, Hugo Boss and many, many more! And as a guest of LA Experience you will be a VIP shopper. - That evening you can get glammed up to hit one of LA's best restaurants, Mastro's Steakhouse.

Day 3: “It’s the little details that really make the trip. The itinerary is designed to coincide with sales, and shopping is the biggest part of the trip,” she said. “We also make the tour very personalised, it’s nice to watch the guests feel like celebrities with their own personal stylists.” And it’s not just for the ladies. “The main group would be 35 – 65 year old ladies, but in saying that, anyone is welcome to come, including the hubbys or partners. We had one husband on the May tour who loved sports. So instead of heading to all of the shopping experiences I used my contacts to set him up with a private suite at the ice hockey playoffs. He had a fantastic time! And there are sport specific tours coming up as well. “This is a very exclusive experience and that’s what LA is all about – exclusivity. We go the extra mile for our guests so they have the most amazing experience.” Visit www.laexperience.com for full tour details, itineraries, dates and more information.

- Today you head to the Beverly Center, a mall filled with deals, and with the care and attention of your own personal stylist you will attend sessions at Macy’s, Nordstrom and BCBG Maxazria. Before traveling to LA, you will complete an LA Experience profile which will be given to your stylist (s). This will allow them to have a "rack" of clothes already pulled. - Following the Beverly Center you head to The Grove for a private stylist session with stylehaüs, an exclusive showroom style boutique. You will have a threehour one-on-one session with your stylist both in their studio and

across stores within the Grove. - Late afternoon you will head to Sunset Blvd for the "Glamour Afternoon” so you can spoil yourself with a blow dry and make-up application. - This evening you hit a fabulous Hollywood hotspot for dinner – the Sunset Tower Bar and Terrace before checking out the worldfamous Sky Bar located within the Mondrian Hotel pool deck (a hot spot for A-list celebrities).

Day 4: - A lazy Sunday brunch at the hotel followed by a day of leisure. Montage has a beautiful pool deck to relax by, or you may wish to walk the streets of Beverly Hills. Be as busy or as relaxed as you like. - That afternoon the tour heads over to the "Westside" of LA for a tour of Santa Monica before drinks and a tapas style dinner at the High Rooftop Lounge in Venice.

Day 5: - This morning is all about the Spa Montage. Undoubtedly one of the best spa's in California. - This afternoon you have a choice of optional activities. You can visit another outlet shopping centre, take a VIP tour of Warner Bros studio, or do your own thing. - That evening you are heading to another fabulous LA restaurant, The Bazaar by Jose Andres.

Day 6: Today is the final day of the tour and you celebrate with a farewell lunch at one of LA's leading celebrity hangouts, The Ivy. There are often paparazzi camped out across the street hoping for photos of arriving celebs. You enjoy a leisurely lunch on the coveted patio followed by a stroll along chic Robertson Blvd. Then it’s time to say good bye. n

Asparagus and poached eggs

Special occasion breakfast hotcakes with strawberries

1 meal 2 free-range or organic eggs 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1 slice spelt or multigrain bread 5 pieces asparagus, ends trimmed 1⁄2 lemon for squeezing Handful of rocket (arugula) or watercress leaves, washed and dried 1 tablespoon shaved parmesan cheese Pinch of Celtic sea salt Cracked black pepper

2 meals 1 free-range or organic egg, separated pinch of Celtic sea salt 1⁄4 cup ricotta cheese 3⁄4 cup buttermilk 1⁄4 teaspoon vanilla essence 1⁄2 cup white spelt flour 1⁄4 teaspoon baking powder 25 g (1 oz) butter 100 g (3.5 oz) strawberries, sliced 2 tablespoons manuka honey or pure maple syrup 2 lemon wedges to squeeze

Place a saucepan with a steamer over medium heat and half fill with boiling water. This is to cook the asparagus while your eggs are poaching. Break the eggs into a cup to ensure the yolks are intact. Fill a deep-sided saucepan with at least 10 cm (4 in) of simmering water. Add the vinegar to the water. Stir the water with a spoon, creating a small whirlpool. Drop the eggs one at a time into the centre of the whirlpool. The water will settle and the eggs should form an oval. While the eggs are cooking, chargrill or toast the bread. Place the asparagus in the steamer for 90 seconds. Remove pan from heat and squeeze lemon juice on top of asparagus. Place toast on a plate and arrange the watercress or rocket (arugula) leaves and asparagus on top. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and drain well. Place the eggs on the toast and asparagus, sprinkle with the parmesan shavings and season with Celtic salt and cracked black pepper.

To make breakfast hotcakes, drop tablespoons of batter into the hot pan. Make three hotcakes at a time. Cook over a medium heat for two minutes and turn over with a spatula. Cook until golden on both sides. Wipe pan with a paper towel and melt the remaining butter and cook another batch. To serve, pile 3 hotcakes onto a plate and top with sliced strawberries. asternwell, one of Australia’s leading drilling and well servicing companies, has overhauled its camp menus to encourage workers to eat healthy. As part of their employee Healthy Lifestyle Program, Easternwell is modifying onsite menus. This new program aims to see vegetable consumption increase by 10% in the next 12 months as well as encouraging new eating habits such as swapping or alternating red meat for other options such as seafood and chicken. In just six months, Easternwell has already begun to see some significant changes in behaviour around what its employees are putting on their plate. Easternwell Camp Management General Manager Marco Waanders said that while

healthy

many employees regarded their health as good or excellent, a high number are still interested in improving their health were through eating healthier food. “Workers on camps and rigs encounter many barriers to choosing healthy options. Being away from home and the family support network can sometimes result in a lack of motivation to eat well. So we have been working hard to not only dish-up healthier food options but provide the knowledge and encouragement about how to live a healthier life,” he said. “The key to making this program successful is that we are simply providing people with the means to make small yet significant changes.” Terry Sanders from Easternwell Santos Mobile Camp in Injune said he’d noticed a

difference in his health since the program was implemented. “My health is incredibly important to me but being away from home, I had gotten into the habit of choosing the ‘sometimes’ meal choices a little too often. It is easy to add a side of chips or have an extra helping of desert, because I can,” Terry said. “It can get pretty tough to stay motivated to eat well when you’re out on roster. So now when I see the person in front of me skip the potato bake and opt for a steamed potato instead, I am reminded that I should do the same as well.” The program took two years to develop in conjunction with RHealth Limited. Easternwell has also just started a campaign to assist staff to quit smoking. n

Eat fibre and lots of it

F

ibre is a super food. It keeps our elimination channels healthy, increases our satiety (feeling of fullness) so we are less likely to feel hungry and want to snack. Even better still, high fibre food is low in fat and high in lots of healthy nutrients, therefore a major preventative to a myriad of diseases ranging from digestive dysfunction to hormonal issues. There are compounds called isoflavonoids and lignans found in fibre that will cleanse the body of harmful toxins, and even inhibit cancer growth. Dietary fibre is essential for health and can only be found in plant foods – animal foods such as meat, cheese and eggs have no fibre. Did you also know that fibre is a carbohydrate and can’t easily be digested, so it does not contribute to the calorie intake of the diet. There are two major types of fibre – soluble and insoluble.

WITH SAIMAA MILLER NATUROPATH, NUTRITIONIST, DETOX SPECIALIST, HERBALIST AND HEALTH COACH. WWW.AUSSIEBODYDIET.COM

SOLUBLE FIBRE Soluble fibre is often described as mucilaginous or slippery since it has the capacity to carry lots of water thereby forming a gel. This can help lower LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol, while maintaining HDL (‘good’) cholesterol and help constipation or the symptoms of irritable bowel. Soluble fibre is found in fruit and vegetables, some cereals (eg. oats, barley), psyllium, linseed, slippery elm and in legumes (dried peas, beans and lentils).

INSOLUBLE FIBRE Insoluble fibre is often described as ‘roughage’. This fibre is more resistant to digestion, and is fermented by bacteria to produce special fatty acids for the health of the gut wall. Insoluble fibre is found mainly in wholegrain foods (especially wheat bran and rice bran), the skins of fruits and vegetables, nuts and dried beans. It helps prevent constipation by producing bulky stools and speeding bowel transit time. RESISTANT STARCH Resistant starch is found in whole grains, cold cooked potatoes, lentils, and firm bananas. Resistant starch is fermented in the gut, resulting in beneficial effects on the bowel and blood cholesterol levels. n

FIGHTING FIT

Get Fighting Fit! (And learn some kickass moves in the process)

I

f you want to cut the fat, work off the after work beers and get yourself some abs then a simple at home boxing circuit can work wonders and have you on your way to a Hugh Jackman 6 pack in no time.

Warm up Skip for 2 minutes – If you don’t have a skipping rope (go buy one!) or just imagine you have one in your hands and make the full actions as if you are skipping with a rope– your body will receive the same benefits.

Shadow box with a 1 jab & cross Throw your jab then your cross, pause, then repeat the movement. Do this for 2 minutes making sure you are keeping your core tight and putting power into the punches. But don’t overextend your arms or you will do damage to your shoulders. Make sure once you throw your jab you bring your fist straight back to just below your chin and do the same with your cross.

2 Star jumps Begin in a relaxed stance with your feet together and your arms by your side. To begin the move, jump your legs wide apart while at the same time bringing your arms touching over your head and return to your starting position. Repeat without stopping for 1 minute. Push yourself – move as quick as you can and keep your arms straight touching your hands together overhead.

3 Shadow box with uppercuts Get your stance, engage your core and stand strong, then use your left hand to throw an uppercut, then the right hand. Pause and reset then repeat. Continue for 2 minutes. Remember boxing is all about technique the better your technique the better your workout.

40

4 Push-ups Lie flat on the floor with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Tuck your toes so they are under your feet. Raise your body up off the floor by pushing your body up, extending your arms and keeping your body straight. Return to the start touching your chest to the ground briefly then push straight back up again. Repeat for 1 minute.

6 Squats

Shadow box 5 with hooks

Stand up straight chest up, shoulders back. Place your feet shoulder-width apart or slightly wider. Your hips should be stacked over your knees and your knees over your ankles. Extend your arms straight out in front of you so they are parallel to the ground, palms facing down, keep your head facing forward and look straight ahead. Take your hips back while you bend your knees; imagine you are sitting in a chair. Remember your knees should not extend past your toes. Press your weight back into your heels and push through your heels to bring yourself back to your starting position, standing upright. Squeeze your butt and legs throughout the movement and go deep. Feel the burn. Do this for 2 minutes, no rest.

Get your stance, engage your core and stand strong. Left hand throws a hook which is a punch at 45 degree angle, and then your right hand throws a hook. Pause reset. Go again. Continue for 2 minutes.

7 Crunch Start lying flat on your back with your knees up and your hands behind your head. Use your abdominals to crunch up. Don’t pull on your head or neck as you lift up. Do this for 2 minutes.

Boxing Circuit Intensity Beginners Level – Shadow box with no dumbbells, push-ups and plank can be done on your knees Intermediate Level – Shadow box with dumbbells, push-ups and plank on toes -complete the boxing circuit twice.

8 Plank Lie face down on floor. Make a triangle by placing your palms on the floor and resting on your forearms. Make sure your elbows are under your shoulders. Push off the floor rising up onto your toes keeping your back flat and in a straight line from head to heels. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent rear end from sticking up in the air or sagging in the middle. Hold for 1 minute.

Advanced Level – Shadow box using heavier dumbbells, push-ups and plank on your toes and bring one foot off the ground (alternate feet), add dumbbell to your squat and increase the time completing each activity. Complete the boxing circuit three times. Tip – record how many star jumps, push ups and squats you do in the allocated time and try to beat your number in your next round of the boxing circuit or next training session. FAMILY MATTERS

What life's really like for the partner at home (newsflash: it’s no picnic!) BY MININGFM CO-FOUNDER ALICIA RANFORD

I

t's not a competition. We're BOTH exhausted! It's fair to say that until I visited a mine site, it was hard to truly understand what an average day was like for my husband. Once I'd made the trip - and in the space of just 24 hours - I understood about the isolation, the long days, where he slept, ate and socialised and what the journey to and from the mine was like. The experience made me a more considerate and understanding partner. After seeing an operating mine and camp with my own eyes, I was finally able to make sense of the mood swings before he headed back to work, and his inability to make regular, lengthy calls while he was away. One little problem remained ... how to make him understand what life was like for me while he was away at work! We have two beautiful kids and I work part time. Life is hectic. Breakfasts, lunches, take kids to school, work, pay the bills,

42

Issue 29

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

pick kids up from school, after-school commitments (I should be eligible for a taxi license). Then there's the washing, ironing, cleaning, shopping, helping the kids with their homework ... and don't forget to feed the animals (bugger), tidy up the house and fall into bed. Don’t get me wrong - I love it. But let’s be honest: sometimes it can be a lot like ground hog day, and it's a side of life the worker away doesn’t really see. When he's home on FIFO R&R, there's the special meals, fun times catching up with family and friends, avoiding the more boring household chores and generally making life as fun as possible. It’s totally understandable. When you don’t get to hang out as a family every day, you want the 'together' times to be as fun as possible. Unfortunately this often leads to misunderstandings, because the worker away can forget that R&R isn’t reality. My advice for both parties is to remember that it isn’t a competition. You are both

VISIT WWW.MININGFM.COM.AU exhausted and ultimately working towards the same goal. My husband and I are aiming to get the mortgage down, save for the future, finish landscaping the garden, give the kids the best start in life and help them excel at school. We both want the same things and both have a role to play in achieving them. It is not about who works harder, because let’s face it - both roles are hard and exhausting. So remember... • Take the time to explain what life is like while you are apart. Don’t play 'tit for tat', just explain what you find difficult. • We all like a little praise now and then. Acknowledge that your other half is working hard and that you love and appreciate them for it. • Reward yourselves. If you manage to pay some extra cash off the mortgage or have spent the last two months working hard to finish off a home project, treat yourselves to a night out. n

The high FIFO divorce rate is a myth, but the challenges are a reality when families separate

here is a common misconception that the divorce rate among flyin-fly-out (FIFO) workers is higher than the rest of the population. Although one study found that the rate of divorce after starting work in WA mining was 7 per cent for FIFO workers (as compared to 5 per cent of workers living in the city) this is still much less than the 30 per cent that's often suggested in the media. A 2009 study by Lindsay Greer at CQ University showed the divorce and separation rate at 11.26 per cent across all industries, and actually lower in mining at 11.15 per cent. This tells me two things. Firstly, statistics can tell you anything you want to hear if you set the parameters of the question the 'right' way. But there are also clear indications that divorce is not the cancer of the resources industry that some headline-makers want us to believe. MEDIATION FIFO families might be no different in a statistical sense, but they certainly have different needs and challenges and family lawyers need to be sensitive to these. While mediation is compulsory for almost all divorces involving children there is mediation and then there is mediation! We encourage FIFO families to utilise a reputable mediation and counselling service to deal with the change. A good

Exploration boost needed N

ews that no less than 42 drill rigs are parked in the Goldfields without work sends a clear message that securing future mining sector exploration and growth must be a priority for governments. The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) has been calling for incentives similar to the Canadian flowthrough share scheme, such as a mining exploration tax credit (METC), to boost the flagging exploration sector. “To establish a future pipeline of projects we rely upon increasing the current level of exploration activity here in Western Australia,” CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith said. The recent visit of Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources to Kalgoorlie provided a good opportunity to hear the views of drillers and exploration companies about the current state of the sector. Mr MacFarlane suggested that the Opposition was considering the implementation of a mining exploration tax credit to encourage investment in exploration activity.

“It would be a real confidence boost to explorers to see an iron-clad commitment to pursue this policy,” Mr Howard-Smith said. Locally, the Western Australian Government is focused on boosting exploration activity through its Exploration Incentive Scheme. Programs such as these are welcomed by the resources sector and

will deliver a significant return to the people of Western Australia. “Australia needs to remain an attractive destination for exploration and the development of resources projects to deliver ongoing prosperity to all West Australians,” Mr Howard-Smith said.

SPORTS FEVER

Tee off in Perth T

he Perth International is Australia’s richest golf tour, with golf fans flocking to the event to see the world’s best players competing in Western Australia. With US$2 million prize money at stake, The 2013 Perth International is sure to draw a crowd this October. Held at WA’s premier Lake Karrinyup Country Club, the Perth International is the only event on this year’s Australian tour to be sanctioned by the European Tour as well as being cosanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia which means an exciting lineup of top class players. This year, Australian golfer Brett Rumford is set to compete for the title against inaugural Perth International champion Bo Van Pelt hailing from the US. None could argue Brett Rumford is currently one of the top sportsmen in the world. With back-to-back success in the European Tour, Rumfords career has reached a new high, ranking at number 76 in the Official World Golf Rankings. The 35 year old is the first Australian golfer to win consecutive titles on the European Tour since Jack Newton in 1972. Rumford was undoubtedly the number one golfer on the European tour and with his recent wins in South Korea and China, Rumford has set the bar high for this year’s Perth International. Skippers writer Olivia Leach had a chat to Brett about the tour. AFTER TOURING IN EUROPE FOR SO LONG ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO RETURNING TO PERTH THIS YEAR FOR THE PERTH INTERNATIONAL TOUR? I will have been overseas based in London from early May to October so it is always good to be home. The Perth International is the start of a very busy and exciting end of season for me.

been doing on my mental approach with Warren Kennaugh; on my golf swing with Pete Cowen and on my physical conditioning with Kevin Duffy. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE AT THIS YEAR’S TOURNAMENT? It is an important event in the final stages of the race to Dubai so I want to capitalise on the opportunity to play an event at home and create some momentum into the final series.

WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE DO YOU GET FROM THE CROWDS HERE AS AN AUSTRALIAN PLAYER? IS IT DIFFERENT TO PLAYING OVERSEAS? It is always nice to play an event in front of friends and family so hopefully I can reward their support! THIS YEAR YOU'LL BE COMPETING AGAINST BO VAN PELT FOR THE TITLE, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS? ARE YOU CONFIDENT YOU CAN CLAIM THE TITLE FROM HIM? Bo is a terrific player and it is great he is coming back to defend his title. There will be a strong field and Lake Karrinyup is a terrific test of golf, but hopefully I can get myself in the mix on the back nine on the Sunday. THIS YEAR YOU HAVE REACHED A HIGH POINT IN YOUR CAREER, ACHIEVING AN IMPRESSIVE RANKING OF 76. WHAT CHANGED THIS YEAR TO GIVE YOU THAT EXTRA MOMENTUM? I feel like I have a really good team around me so it is a combination of things. The work I have

ALSO, THERE'S QUITE A LOT OF TRAVEL INVOLVED IN YOUR LIFE AT THE MOMENT. DO YOU ENJOY THIS ASPECT OF YOUR CAREER? There is a lot of travel and I am fortunate to have the support of my wife Sally and our twin daughters. They will travel to events when they can and it is always great to have them with me. When they don’t I can generally get back to London on Sunday evening. Visit http://perthinternational.com for more information. n

Safari

T

he Australiasian Safari is a world renowned motorsport event, broadcast in over 120 countries worldwide. Beginning in 1985 in the Northern Territory Outback, the event later moved to New South Wales incorporating the famous Mt Panorama Circuit in Bathurst. In 2007, The Australasian Safari was moved to its new home in Western Australia, where it has been held for the past six years.

BY MADELINE JOHNSON

2013 marks the 28th year of The Australasian Safari and Perth motorbike and rally enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate. Come this September, fans will have an exclusive chance to get up close and personal with the stars of one of Australia’s toughest motorsport challenges at The Safari Show!

Considered Australia’s answer to Dakar, The Australasian Safari is renowned as one of the toughest and most challenging motorsport events in the world. Just finishing the race is considered an achievement. Held this year from September 20-27, the course will once again feature some spectacular coastal stages along Western Australia’s Coral Coast. Starting in Wanneroo Perth, The Australasian Safari covers about 3000km of technically challenging and rough terrain. After departing from Wanneroo, competitors will head north up into the Gascoyne region and around the Kennedy Ranges, then they head out to tropical Carnarvon and south again through Kalbarri before finishing up in Geraldton. The course will travel mostly on private land, meaning this is the only chance competitors will have to experience these otherwise inaccessible areas. From Thai celebrities to California off road racers, hardened South African riders and of course some Aussie racing legends, The Australasian Safari continues to attract competitors from around the globe as its reputation as Australia’s toughest off road event grows. This year spectators also have the exclusive chance to meet the drivers and check out their vehicles before they tackle seven days of off road racing. Hosted by the City of Wanneroo, The Safari Show is a free family event. Punters are invited to come down to the Wanneroo Showgrounds before race kick off on Thursday September 19 from 4 - 9pm where around 100 Australasian Safari competitors and their race vehicles will be assembled for display. There will be family entertainment and refreshments available on the night. This is the ONLY chance to see the drivers and they’re vehicles before the competition kicks off and things get down and dirty - so don’t miss out! n

Luxurious class I

n the realm of luxury SUV motoring, the new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class cuts a lonely figure. The second generation instalment from Mercedes-Benz breaks new ground for seven-seat SUVs, combining supreme comfort with breathtaking performance. Complementing the wellestablished GL 350 BlueTEC and GL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY variants, Mercedes-Benz also introduces a new AMG model for the Australian market, the GL 63 AMG. Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars Australia/Pacific Mr Horst Von Sanden said the GL-Class represents luxury SUV motoring, combining cutting-edge technology and driver assistance systems with uncompromised comfort, “The new GL-Class is comprehensively equipped with safety and convenience features that provide exceptional value to customers,” he said. In order to deliver significant reductions in fuel consumption while enhancing performance, the ‘S-Class of SUVs’ harnesses a new engine line-up from the previous generation. Priced from $129,900 excluding on road costs, the GL 350 BlueTEC is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 diesel BlueTEC engine, producing 190kW of power while consuming just 7.7L/100km. The excellent fuel economy is underpinned by a comprehensive package of BlueTEC measures and state-of-the-art engineering. At $154,900, the mid-range GL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY is characterised by an outstanding level of comfort. The AMG exterior sports package, leather upholstery and heated front and second row seats

ensure optimal driving conditions are always met, whilst the powerful 4.7 litre twinturbocharged petrol V8 engine confirms that no compromises have been made in terms of performance. At the top of the range, the imposing road presence of the GL 63 AMG is fused with the powerful AMG Bi-turbo engine to deliver a maximum output of 410kW and up to 760Nm of torque. The 5.5 litre engine in combination with the performance oriented AMG 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive system as standard, leads to extremely dynamic performance: the GL 63 AMG accelerates from 0 – 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds, while its top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). A host of exceptional features come standard on the GL 63 AMG including: 21” Wheels, AMG sports suspension, Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround-sound system, AMG sports seats and AMG sports pedals. In addition to 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, Eco Start / Stop function

and the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, a number of integrated Mercedes-Benz driver assistance systems are offered as standard across all three GL-Class variants. The inbuilt 360° camera in combination with the Active Parking Assist System facilitates seamless reverse-parallel and 90 degree parking, while the Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® Brake systems constantly monitor the external environment and provide feedback to the driver. MONEY MATTERS

Meet the

I

Thrillionaire

f you are looking for inspiration, look no further than Nik Halik. Inflight Publishing Editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a chat to the aptly nicknamed ‘Thrillionaire’ about how he went from a sick kid confined to his bedroom to an entrepreneur, international speaker, astronaut, high adrenaline adventurer and bestselling author.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO? I am known as a life and wealth strategist. But for me it’s all about emotionally and financially inspiring millions around the globe. That is what I do across countries around the world. I UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG YOU CREATED A LIST OF THE THINGS YOU WANTED TO ACHIEVE IN LIFE AND ONLY HAVE A FEW LEFT TO TICK OFF. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR PEOPLE TO PLAN OUT THEIR GOALS LIKE THIS, AND

HOW IMPORTANT WAS IT FOR YOU? Yes, it is paramount. I created mine when I was eight years old. I drafted my screenplay and I’ve been the actor, producer and director of it for over 30 years. People need to understand that if you don’t plan your goals and put a date on them, you will never succeed. My travels to over 132 countries and crazy adventures are the essence of my life. WHAT SORT OF ATTRIBUTES DO SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE POSSESS? Successful people break the rules, have an irrational level of commitment, are hungry to solve problems, they have a ferocious drive to do more and above all, they never give up and always take massive action.

OVER THE YEARS YOU HAVE CREATED GREAT WEALTH FOR YOURSELF, HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THIS AND WHY DO YOU THINK YOU WERE YOU ABLE TO DO WHAT SO

MANY OTHERS CAN’T? I had pure focus and determination to live my adventures and they cost money. No one else is going to do for you what you want to do. I’ve had the entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. I was wise with money and become a multi-millionaire thanks to savvy investments in property and the stock market. I discovered my WHY, the WOW component to understanding my life’s purpose and never gave up. Too many people just try and quit just as they are about to reach their goal. I never tried. I DID. HOW DOES SOMEONE GO FROM BEING THE AVERAGE PERSON ON AN AVERAGE WAGE, TO GAINING SUCCESS AND WEALTH? WHAT IS THE PROCESS AND HOW CAN IT BE ACHIEVED? Anyone can achieve success and wealth. As I just mentioned, you need to find your WHY. That will drive you forward. Then take massive action! You need to develop a hunger for life,

do what you love and don’t let anything get in your way. Talk to high achievers, those who have accomplished more than you have and learn from their mistakes. You need to maintain a child-like curiosity towards life. Save money from your monthly wage and start investing it to create wealth for your future. But remember this. It is not about getting rich quick, those ventures do not last. You have to be a smart investor and make sure that any investment has the following criteria: 1. Know your ROI (return on investment) from day 1. 2. Your investment must be recession-proof. 3. You must be able to generate cash flow on your investment anywhere in the world. Follow that simple piece of advice and anyone can go from ordinary to extraordinary and live the life they were born to have. CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE PROJECTS YOU ARE INVOLVED IN; FINANCIAL FREEDOM INSTITUTE, MONEY MASTERS GLOBAL, THE THRILLIONAIRES, iCOACH GLOBAL AND SHARELORD? What I have done is create different education systems to help people become financially free. A wealth strategist plays an integral role in everyone’s life and I always tell people they need to have at least five streams of income and that’s what my projects are.

“Live each day as if it is your last. Do what you love and do it often. Be the producer, scriptwriter and director of your life. Dare to dream!” YOU ARE NOT ONLY A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR, YOU ARE ALSO A THRILL SEEKER, CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF YOUR ADVENTURES? Where to start! In my best-selling book ‘The Thrillionaire’ I explain in detail most of my adventures but of course some of my various expeditions include being one of the first explorers to dive down five miles and land on the bow of The Titanic. I have summit to the highest mountains in the world and I was one of the privileged select explorers to view the curvature of the earth from the edge of space. It’s this mosaic that allows me to transcend what is possible. Imagine seeing the wreck

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

of the Titanic live with your own eyes; you go back in time and think of what people must have gone through when it went down. Imagine travelling at 25,000 km an hour. Impossible? No! That is the speed in space. An adventure is doing something unique, something fun and exhilarating and each of the ones I have done are just that. I UNDERSTAND YOU ARE ALSO THE FIRST FLIGHT-QUALIFIED AND CERTIFIED CIVILIAN ASTRONAUT FROM AUSTRALIA AND YOU PLAN TO ROCKET TO OUTER SPACE AND LIVE ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION – HOW WILL YOU ACHIEVE THIS GOAL AND WHAT WILL THAT MEAN TO YOU? Yes, I plan to do that by 2015. It all depends on the rotation given but I am extremely close. It will mean that I only have 1 goal left from my original 10 that I wrote down as a child. WHAT ELSE IS ON THE CARDS FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE? To keep doing what I’m doing. My goal is to create 1 million Thrillionaires worldwide and I will not stop until that is done. Right now I have 8 educations to help people become financially free and I am always developing something. For me, success lies in how many lives I can impact and inspire. This is what is most emotionally profitable for me and why I will never stop. n

YOUR PLACE

Hotspotting BY TERRY RYDER, DIRECTOR, HOTSPOTTING.COM.AU

A

property investor with a crystal ball would have bought a house in the Queensland mining town of Moranbah a decade ago. Ten years ago, the typical Moranbah house fetched about $50,000. In 2012 buyers were paying $750,000. Values had grown at a rate of 31% a year, spurred by the development of

multiple coal mines, an influx of workers and a shortage of housing. In the Western Australian town of Port Hedland, the median house price in 2002 was $193,000. Today it’s $1,165,000, because of the town’s relationship with the iron ore industry. If only you’d known. The reality is that, while there may still be

capital growth in those locations in the future, the opportunity to “make a killing” there has long passed. The question for investors is: Where is the next Moranbah? Is there another town that will deliver the exponential growth of Port Hedland? Are there locations where houses are cheap now, but will grow in value 10-fold over the next decade? It’s difficult to identify those opportunities because, usually, the growth drivers are not yet apparent. Ten years ago, houses in Moranbah were cheap because the town’s future as a mining boom town was not yet apparent. But there are places around Australia where these growth rates may happen in the future, if something special happens. If a promised mine happens, the small town nearby will be transformed and its property values with it – but if the mine plans are scrapped, property there will have little value. These are the “Long Shots”, the places that investors should consider only if they have the financial capacity and willingness to take risks. Right now there are locations around Australia where homes are cheap, but will be worth three or five times as much 10 years from now. The “Long Shots” report on the hotspotting.com.au website suggests 10 possibilities. But investors need to be cautious. There are “Long Shots” because the proposed events may not happen. And, without them, values are unlikely to surge. n

WA has the fastest growing population in Australia

W

– AND FOR GOOD REASON!

estern Australia is unique. Its climate, lifestyle, people and traditions make it a great place to live, work and play. Right now WA has the fastest growing population in Australia – and this growth is expected to continue for at least the next 25 to 30 years, with many places predicted to double, and in some cases, even triple in size. Major towns and cities across WA are already benefitting. A number of innovative residential and commercial land development projects are on the go and these are creating thriving new communities, business opportunities and more jobs. With this exciting growth there is of course a need for further land and a much smarter, simpler and more sustainable way to plan and build. LandCorp, the State Government’s land and property development agency, is working in partnership with local government and private enterprise to carefully research, prepare and deliver land development projects to meet WA’s growing population. Here we take a look at two of the key LandCorp initiatives: Activity Centres: Creating a new community in Cockburn Cockburn Central is an exciting new Activity Centre development which has been specially created to help limit urban sprawl, address housing density issues, and support

local population and economic growth. Since August 2012 it has continued to go from strength to strength. At just 16 minutes by train from the Perth CBD and a short drive to Fremantle, it is a strategic urban hub. Cleverly designed it includes of a wide choice of high quality residential, commercial and mixed use sites including affordable housing, all with good amenities and convenient access to major transport, shopping centres, parks and playgrounds. Key features include a Town Centre, with water playground, public artwork and a permanent table tennis table. The Town Centre has been designed to increase a sense of community, encouraging people to get involved and to get to know their neighbours. This has been brought to life by a range of regular community events. The success of Cockburn Central has seen plans for the creation of future Activity Centres in Murdoch, Claremont, the Cockburn Coast and Mandurah Junction. Pilbara Cities: Helping the Pilbara prosper The Pilbara region is WA’s economic powerhouse and many of the Region’s key cities are experiencing strong population growth fuelled by the mining industry and related businesses. With growth expected to continue for the next 20 to 30 years, given consistent demand for iron ore and other minerals, additional land and housing is needed, as

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

more people choose to live in the region, build homes, set-up businesses and raise families. Two initiatives addressing this are Pilbara Cities’ and the Pilbara Vernacular. The first, funded by the Royalty for Regions program, is managed by the Pilbara Development Commission and supported by LandCorp. This initiative focuses on infrastructure co-ordination, land availability and development, community projects and engagement along with economic diversification. It works to ensure that there is a ‘big picture’ approach to planning for the long-term housing supply and infrastructure needs of the region, as each city grows to accommodate populations of over 50,000 people. The second is the Pilbara Vernacular. This is a specially developed handbook for architects, builders, planners and designers. It gives them a guide on how to design and construct affordable and sustainable houses and buildings in the Pilbara to suit its specific climate, location and lifestyle. Key recommendations include working with nature to reduce the long-term costs of running a household, from installing solar power panels to supply electricity to planting native plants which use less water. Skills logging in the Pilbara

Does a CV make you competent? EVERYONE STRETCHES THE TRUTH ON THEIR CV'S A LITTLE, DON’T THEY?

ell maybe not everyone, but it is not uncommon to find that peoples' skills and knowledge do not match those expected from their CV's. All too often these shortcomings are discovered only after a string of incidents or poor decisions that result in injury, damage to equipment or significant additional cost to the company. While companies are legally bound to assess employee competency from a safety perspective, the current market also demands greater productivity and efficiency. Consequently, employers are additionally moving to verification of technical competencies to ensure that employee's skills match their role, and that areas requiring development are identified. One such employer is Western Australia’s Digirock, a well-regarded geological contracting/consulting group who have developed a formalised and routine skills logging and verification system for use with their geologists and field technicians. Digirock directors Peta and John Libby, both geologists, recently spent a week in the Pilbara catching up with their team on the job verifying technical competencies and updating staff Skills Logs, as well as reviewing client systems of work and workplaces. "We have been operating our Skills Log for two years and it was great to see the additional skills our staff has gained since we started the system. Getting out bush allows us to see the terrific match between client requirements and staff ability that we work so hard to achieve. To see first-hand the dedication of our people and receive glowing reports from clients is tremendously gratifying,” Peta Libby said. Taking a gamble

on a hidden problem

Hidden deep beneath the excitement and fun of a social bet is the real world of gambling - and it’s not pretty.

I

n Australia approximately 8 in 10 people gamble annually, over 3 in 10 gamble regularly and alarmingly approximately 6.5% of our adult population gamble at unsustainable levels, with devastating impacts on personal health and wellbeing, as well as family and community repercussions. This demonstrates how common and how relevant gambling issues are to each and every community in Australia, especially when we appreciate that the issue associated with one gambler can have a flow on effect of up to 10 other people and on their community. There is evidence demonstrating that problem gamblers experience worse physical and mental health than the general population. In addition concerns with financial debt, legal assistance, marital issues, homelessness, school and work absenteeism, obesity, depression, suicide and anxiety all surround so-called “social gambling”. The changing nature of gambling to now include online, and the changing demographic of gamblers including an increase in women and youth, has led to a need for both the education and the treatment around gambling to be updated. Services need to target a wider population group including both genders, across age groups, diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and across education and socio-economic groups to ensure we are addressing the issues appropriately. There is also a need to increase community awareness about the impacts of gambling, in particular the gaming programmes aimed at youth and the impacts on mental and physical wellbeing. Support is available to those affected by gambling and more information can be found by contacting Beyond Gambling South West 08 9721 9939 or at www.gamblinghelponline.org.au n This information was provided by Bunbury Counselling.

apua New Guinea is a country of contrasts. Made up of over 600 islands located within the Coral Triangle of the South Pacific, from the white sandy beaches and aqua coloured water of New Ireland, to the active volcano and rich war history of Rabaul in East New Britain, PNG is a country so diverse, so beautiful and yet still vastly un-explored. With a rich history and culture, and now a booming mining and industrial scene, PNG is officially putting itself on the map. And many individuals, workers and businesses are jumping on the train that leads right into the heart of PNG’s mining and resources industry. >>

The Cairns region in Queensland sits at the gateway to PNG and the Asia Pacific, and has built a long standing and well developed trade relationship with PNG. This was demonstrated at the second annual Australia & PNG Mining Resources Exhibition which took place in June this year with the many and varied exhibitors offering their services, products and expertise. With more than 1300 attendees and 150 exhibitors, the second annual Australia & PNG Mining Resources Exhibition was a huge success. With support from businesses across Australia and PNG, expo goers were shown the latest and greatest in products and services available to the mining and resources industry. The Fred Moule Building at the Cairns Showgrounds was full over the two days in June and the hustle and bustle of the expo was exciting for all. Especially for event Organiser Keryn Haynes who said she was really happy with the result. “We increased our exhibitors by nearly 50 this year and it was great to have the building filled. We also had external sites in the arena with a great mix of goods on display ranging from solar panels and communications systems

to transportable homes and high powered machinery,” Keryn said. “And inside we offered a fabulous setting on a mezzanine level where exhibitors could entertain potential clients in a relaxed atmosphere on a more personal level.” This year’s expo attracted representatives of

the mining and resources industry from Papua New Guinea and Australia including delegates from Ok Tedi, Barrick, Morobe Mining Joint Venture, MMG, Century Mine, Newcrest, and Rio Tinto to name a few. “We are hoping next year’s expo will have the same great support from businesses but also an increase in support from people coming along to view the products,” Keryn said. “We want to keep growing bigger and better and there is already a lot of interest for 2014.” Events such as the Expo not only demonstrate the region and industry’s broad capabilities and innovation, but also provide visitors and exhibitors with an effective way of making new contacts, meeting old friends and finding solutions to their needs. Cairns is located 1.5 hours from Port Moresby with over 24 direct flights a week, and good connections to the rest of PNG. Flight schedules enable a cost effective full business day trip. Direct charters also operate from Cairns. For information, including details on how you can become an exhibitor or register as a delegate at next year’s Expo, visit www.tradeshoworganisers.com.au or phone Keryn on 07 3891 7793. SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TALK BACK WITH

Anthony Callea WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION? Vegas and Los Angeles. I’ve been to Vegas about six times and it’s just so much fun, and LA is one of my favourite places. I would like to live there one day soon.

CAN YOU GIVE OUR READERS YOUR TOP TRAVEL TIP? At times it’s difficult but try to adjust to the time at your destination with your sleep pattern the day before you leave and on the plane. When you arrive you will thank yourself.

WHAT WILL YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT? I always fly long haul flights with some essential relaxation oils. I throw a few drops on my pillow and blanket to help me relax and let’s face it, block out the stale plane smells.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT? On the way to Dubai years ago, half way into the flight I dropped my curry on me. I had to walk off the plane with a beautiful yellow stain all over my front.

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU IN 2013? I released my new album THIRTY in April this year and am looking forward to hitting the road for a tour along the east coast. I kick off the shows in my home town of Melbourne at The Palms at Crown, then have four concerts through NSW and finish off in Queensland with my last show at Twin Towns on the Gold Coast before I start Grease. So the rest of the year is pretty jam packed which is great! n
