Kings Park is King at WA Tourism Awards

K

ings Park and Botanic Garden has won gold in three competitive categories at the 2013 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards. The Park was crowned the gold medallist in the category of major tourist attraction and for the Kings Park Festival in the festivals and events category among a competitive field of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions. Kings Park also took out the prestigious Sir David Brand Award for Tourism as the overall winner in 2013. With six million visitors annually, Kings Park is the most visited destination in the State. It enjoys an international reputation for its standards of presentation, spectacular location and leading edge horticulture. Kings Park offers tourists with a great experience of WA’s unique landscape in the heart of the city, according to Kings Park Acting CEO Marcelle Broderick. “Our team of staff and volunteers are very proud to be custodians of this incredible asset that is loved by tourists and locals alike. It really is at the heart of our community.” Environment Minister Albert Jacob said Kings

The Golden Pipeline T

he drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie is becoming a holiday in its own right with the recent launch of the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail. Weaving romantic stories of Western Australia's Gold Rush era with tales of hardship, water shortages and human endeavour, the Golden Pipeline follows the water pipeline between Mundaring and the Goldfields. The statistics about the pipeline are amazing. Few would realise that it is regarded as one of the world's greatest engineering feats and is the longest fresh water pipeline on earth. Still operating, it provides water to an area of 44 0000 square kilometres, 100 000 people and about six million sheep. Now, this piece of WA history is being brought to life and made accessible to visitors through a series of walk and drive trails along its route. There are information points along the way revealing the history of the project and stories of the many thousand people who were involved in its construction. Photographs, diaries and reminiscences are helping to build a picture of the past and are bringing once derelict pump stations and other buildings to life. Six buildings that remain of the original eight steam pump stations are being conserved with signs, oral history and photos. As much as possible, the drive trail takes visitors off Great Eastern Highway to less-

travelled areas, which are rich in history and tales from the past. The York to Goldfields Road is now suitable for two wheel drives, but during the construction of the pipeline is was a dusty rutted track on which men walked pushing wheel barrows laden with equipment or rode on bicycle. The Golden Pipeline trails are delivering new visitors to wheatbelt towns such as Cunderdin, Kellerberrin and Merredin. Many of these towns were established on the back of the pipeline which delivered water to the region, making farming possible. Travelling the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail

also brings visitors in close contact with nature and is great for bushwalking, bird watching and wildflowers. There is plenty of country style hospitality along the way with farm stays and historic hotels good options for accommodation. Traversing the trail has been made easy thanks to a guidebook which is full of maps and stories about life past and present in Golden Pipeline country. It's available from visitor centres, bookstores and the National Trust. For more information visit Golden Pipeline or contact the Western Australian Visitor Centre on 1300 361 351. n

WHAT’S ON – FESTIVAL FEATURE

PEARLJAM INFLIGHT PUBLISHING WRITER ALY EVEILLE HAS A CHAT TO STONE GOSSARD, RHYTHM GUITAR AND BACKING VOCALS FOR PEARL JAM, ABOUT THEIR RECENT TOUR AND THEIR NEW ALBUM LIGHTNING BOLT. >>

HOW IS THE TOURING GOING? Touring is going well. We’re having a lot of fun. We’ve played a couple of shows so far. We were in Oklahoma and Dallas and now we’re out on the west coast of the United States. So we’re on our home coast and it’s been going well. The crowds have been as enthusiastic as ever. It’s kind of shocking! I DON’T BELIEVE YOU! SURELY YOU GUYS ARE USED TO IT? (Laughs) Well every year things are good but you don’t expect them to get better as you get closer to being 50 years old. Somehow that’s worked out. YOU’VE SOLD MORE THAN 60 MILLION ALBUMS WORLD WIDE AND YOU’VE PLAYED ACROSS THE GLOBE, WHAT’S THE JOURNEY BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? It’s all kind of a dream. It’s funny because all of us started out playing music when we were in our teens and back then the mantra was that there’s not a chance of making any money playing music or of succeeding because it’s just a racket, you never know how it works and you should go back to school or whatever. I think we all just came

from an era where we just had a dream, believed in each other and were wilful enough in terms of how hard we worked and how strong our convictions were. We went into it wanting to share with each other. We really wanted to be a band for the long term and we didn’t want to make the same mistakes some of our heroes made like breaking up, fighting and not being able to get through tough times. Those things have really stuck with us and we’re still shockingly the same group of kids that we were. I mean, we have kids now or families and we’ve grown up a lot but we still go into our rehearsals and our recording process is the same… sort of wide eyed, like ‘oh my god, I can’t believe we’re about to do this’. We’re still making songs and once we start writing, six months, one year, two years later we have this record with 10 or 12 songs on it and then all of a sudden we start working them into the set and they become favourites and have a life of their own in our live show. It’s fun to watch the new songs develop a place in the set where people start to know them. I think that’s maybe our most important aspect of this band, is the live show and this history and all of these songs we end up playing.

SO WITH THE RELEASE OF THE 10TH STUDIO ALBUM LIGHTNING BOLT, WHAT CAN THE FANS EXPECT FROM YOU GUYS? It’s a continuation, you know. Eddie is such an amazing lyricist and he’s written from so many different perspectives and he’s able to put himself in so many different spots. He always has really rich lyrics and they keep on revealing themselves. It’s a dense and beautiful lyrical content that ripens with age. For sure we have some love songs and some ballads but there’s also a lot of up-tempo stuff that’s really important to the band, particularly for the live show. When you get out there and there are thousands of people, that energy really needs some fast songs. That energy can be intense and you want to be able to harness that. We still love writing songs that remind us of the hard rock bands – the kind of bands we grew up listening to. You know, punk bands and hard rock, we still just love being a part of that energy. We also like to play folk songs and quiet numbers that really showcase his (Eddie’s) sensitivity and his range as well. >>

WELL, IT MIGHT BE! WHAT’S IT LIKE PLAYING IN FRONT OF A BUNCH OF AUSSIES? Australia has been so enthusiastic for Pearl Jam for so long. From the get go it’s been one of our favourite places. We couldn’t believe it when we got there the first time. It’s like Southern California and London combined in some way and we thought it was great! We have a great time there and the people really are wonderful and have supported the band from the get go. Australia has always gotten Pearl Jam in a way that we won’t ever forget. n

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE NAME LIGHTNING BOLT? It was a title of a song. We always have to come up with an album name; it’s part of the process. We wanted to summarise the record and do it in a word that’s invocative that represents the record in some way and ties it all together. I think that word has a certain energy to it by the nature of its description. It’s also a beautiful song about a particular female and it has some unharnesable energy and I think that’s fantastic. DO YOU THINK THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF CHANGE TO YOUR MUSIC SINCE 1990, AS WELL AS EVOLUTION AS TO HOW YOU GUYS WORK AS A BAND? You know, we’re always evolving for sure. I think when Ed first joined the band he was still discovering his super powers in a way (laughs). It was really Jeff and I that were the veterans at that point. But Ed quickly proved himself to be a leader in the band, the artistic leader by far. He could step out and play a ukulele by himself in front of 60 thousand people and make something happen and you have to respect that charisma and gravity. So I think his evolution is our bands evolution. But everyone still writes for the band, everyone has still written lyrics over the course of our ten albums. We still share in how the band operates, we make business decisions together. It’s really still a group effort. But I’d be lying to say Ed’s not the leader of the band, he really is and deservedly so. We work best when he’s feeling comfortable and is in a position to lead. AS PERFORMERS YOU GET A REALLY UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO POUR YOUR HEART AND SOUL INTO YOUR MUSIC, THAT’S SOMETHING THAT YOUR FANS CONNECT WITH THE MOST. WHAT’S IT LIKE HAVING PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD REALLY FEEL THAT AND BOND WITH IT? When you’re playing live and you step out and start a song and can see almost everybody and can hear these people singing the lyrics that you’ve either written or partaken in writing, it’s

12

Issue 31

kind of other-worldly. I think we’re not the most qualified to comment on it, because we’re used to it in a way. We’re certainly not jaded, but it’s become kind of normal which is insane because it still feels like ‘oh my god, this is shocking’, particularly when you go to different places. Like Australia, the first time we went to Australia we already had huge amounts of fans there. Or if you go Italy, Portugal, South America, Argentina or Brazil, places where you’ve never travelled to before and never had any real connection with, then you go there and you experience so many people that have had their own relationship with your music, it’s out of this world. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE CROWDS DURING YOUR SETS AT BIG DAY OUT NEXT YEAR? We’re super excited. The whole band is ready to go and we’ll be playing a full Pearl Jam set when we’re down there. Australia is such a beautiful place, a place where all of us have spent a lot of extra time before and after tours. I’ve done diving off Exmouth, we’re in the ocean all the time. We love Byron Bay, Bondi and Manly. There are so many great beaches and wonderful people. Everyone is really excited about going back there and re-experiencing the country. One thing I want to let everyone know… people are talking about us playing other shows while we’re down there but it’s just going to be Big Day Out. So if you want see us that’s the way to do it. We won’t be doing any other shows. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT PLAYING AT A FESTIVAL LIKE BIG DAY OUT? It’s cool, although there are some days where it’s a daunting task. You’ve got to get up there for a huge crowd that’s been out there all day, so you need to have your focus. It’s cool because there’s no sound check or anything like that. You just walk out and start playing. Sometimes there’s almost a little over preparation. But it’ll be raw and we’ll be ready. We’re in top form and by the time we get to Australia we’ll be ready to go. We’re hoping it’s not going to be 100 degrees when we’re there, though!

SOUND WAVE

W

hat’s the best thing about your summer? Is it the luminous weather that you can bask in for those long days? Is it the pool parties and barbeques that roll around every weekend? Maybe it’s the fact that all of your mates finally come out of hibernation and there is suddenly a festive vibe in the air! Well with festivities comes festivals, and we’re fanatical for one in particular, Soundwave 2014. Why do we love Soundwave so much? Well, that’s easy. It was birthed right here in Western Australia, in our capital city of Perth. As any festival fanatic would know, Soundwave has since branched out on a national scale and is renowned for good times and the world-famous rock bands they host in almost every Australian capital city! The crew at Soundwave have previously shoulder-barged the competition by headlining bands like Grinspoon, The Offspring, Incubus, Nine Inch Nails, Iron Maiden, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson, Metallica, Linkin Park, Blink 182 and the list really does go on. And as if it wasn’t hard enough to summarise Soundwave’s best acts since inception, 2014 isn’t going to be any easier! The first announcement

was exciting. We’re looking at Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Rob Zombie, Placebo and Korn, plus more. But if this wasn’t cool enough, add in the bands on the second announcement – A Day to Remember, Megadeth, Mastodon, HIM, AFI, Pennywise, Jimmy Eat World, Glassjaw and Panic! at the Disco. Naturally the entire list is too awesome to fit in this space. If you want to know more about Soundwave 2014 like where it’s on, what else is on the agenda and how you can score tickets, just visit www.soundwavefestival.com n

rabbing your passport and heading to departures is liberating for many. Some people spend months planning for it, while others just pack their bags and take off on a whim. But sometimes no matter how much you plan or how spontaneous you are, things can be missed or just near impossible to do at the last minute! Imagine going to some of world’s most famous

music festivals like Coachella in Los Angeles, Pukkelpop in Belgium or Yacht Week in Croatia. Imagine partying in Las Vegas in VIP bungalows with bottle service. Imagine travelling around with a bunch of people who want to see the world and have a damn good time while doing it! Better yet, imagine simply handing over your cash and having every single detail planned out for you. Welcome, Entourage Tours.

Entourage Tours was born by two guys from the Sunshine Coast who had a thirst for something other than another diluted tour experience. They itched to go to real music festivals and to find the world’s wildest parties. So they gave their tours a twist and became the pioneers of tours to international music festivals. Tour manager Dane Dunne says that even with time to plan, tours can be hard to put together. “We pride ourselves on an experience that no other company can offer,” he said. “Our job is to show you two weeks that you can't do on your own.” What about the coolest thing to happen on tour? “We changed one of our nights in Las Vegas at the last minute and organised getting 100 people into Surrender pool party with Diplo playing,” Dane said. “We organised a load of limousines to arrive earlier and threw in our own private bungalows with pools. This is an idea of what we do!” Entourage Tours makes it about more than just being a tourist. They don’t bother with overcrowded, over-rated attractions. They arrange to visit the most out of this world sights. Their name epitomises their nature. Your tour guide will find the hottest local haunts having unearthed each city’s finest experiences. VIP treatment is a high priority for Entourage Tours. They’ll take you to the best music festivals around the world and places that you will never ever forget. MONEY MATTERS

KPMG's top tax tips for families in mining and resources Tax can be trying at the best of times - let alone when you're FIFO/DIDO or working overseas. To cut through the confusion, we've asked the experts at KPMG for specific advice on tax issues for families in mining and resources...

Q. CAN FIFO EMPLOYEES CLAIM A TAX DEDUCTION FOR FLIGHTS TO AND FROM THEIR PLACE OF WORK? HOW ABOUT AIRPORT CAR PARKING OR TAXI FARES? KPMG: Although we would all like to claim as many deductions in our tax returns as possible, there are some limitations to what can be claimed. While work related expenses are deductible, you have to be working to claim them. As such, the general rule is that travel from home to work (whether it’s through driving or flying) is not deductible. Similarly, car parking or taxi fares to an airport are also not

18

Issue 31

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

deductible. However, depending on your circumstances, there may be a possibility to deduct expenses such as flights, petrol and other incidental travel costs. To claim the deduction, ALL FOUR of the following factors must be met: • You are required to live away from home for work purposes, in a remote area where the living conditions are quite poor (due to the remoteness and temporary nature of a site); • Your family usually does not stay with you at the worksite and there is a requirement

• •

for you to leave the site when you are rostered off; You take your personal belongings with you while you are FIFO (as the accommodation on site is not fixed); AND The site is set up for a maximum period of one year.

Q. DO ZONE TAX REBATES (NOW CALLED OFFSETS) STILL APPLY WHEN WORKING REMOTELY IN AUSTRALIA? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY AND WHERE DO THEY APPLY? KPMG: Yes, there is an offset available for employees who work and live in a remote

area within Australia. To qualify for the zone tax offset, an employee must have lived/worked in an eligible remote area (not necessarily for a continuous period) for: • 183 days or more during the current tax year; OR • 183 days or more in total during the current and previous tax years (but less than 183 days in the current year and less than 183 days in the previous tax year) and not claimed a zone tax offset in the previous year's tax return. Q. CAN MINING, OIL AND GAS EMPLOYEES CLAIM A TAX DEDUCTION FOR PARTICULAR EXPENSES SUCH AS WATCHES/ PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES? KPMG: Since no-one wants to pay more tax than they need to, there are a number of specific deductions for mining site employees. Make sure that records/receipts of all workrelated expenses are kept as evidence of deductions claimed in your tax return. In practice, common expenses you claim can include protective clothing, laundry expenses, tools and equipment, telephone expenses and membership subscriptions (unfortunately, this does not mean Foxtel or personal magazine subscriptions to keep you occupied while working remotely!) Q. WHAT’S THE TAX BENEFIT TO RESOURCES FAMILIES OF BOOSTING THEIR PERSONAL SUPER CONTRIBUTIONS? KPMG: Superannuation is important for

retirement and there are a number of steps that can be taken to maximise super contributions as well as take advantage of tax concessions. Superannuation contributions are generally taxed at a rate of 15 per cent within the super fund, so there may be tax advantages in increasing your contributions (through salary sacrificing) as this rate is generally lower than tax on salary earned, which is taxed at marginal tax rates. For example, if the employee's marginal rate of tax is 32.5 per cent (plus Medicare levy of 1.5 per cent) and the contribution rate is 15 per cent, there is a tax saving of 19 per cent on the contribution made. However, note that individuals earning income of more than $300,000 will have their contribution's tax rate increased from 15 per cent to 30 per cent. Those nearing retirement age might be thinking: "Excellent, I’ll put most of my pay into superannuation!" Unfortunately, this cannot be done without tax implications. It is important when contributing additional payments into superannuation to be mindful of caps, as the treatment of excess contributions will effectively remove the tax saving opportunities for you. Effective 1 July 2013, the compulsory employer contribution rate has increased from 9 per cent to 9.25 per cent (in accordance with the federal government’s initiative to increase employer superannuation contributions to 12 per cent by the year 2020). Q. ARE THERE OTHER WAYS FOR MINING

FAMILIES TO ENSURE THEY DON’T PAY MORE TAX THAN NECESSARY (E.G. INVESTMENT PROPERTIES, MANAGED FUNDS)? KPMG: Families could consider borrowing to invest in rental properties, managed funds or the share market to take advantage of what is called negative gearing (meaning, the outgoings in managing investments is greater than the income from investments and this loss is offset by wages). Typically, interest on borrowings is tax deductible along with any costs associated in managing investments. However, the negative gearing benefit needs to be weighed up with the negative cash flow that may arise. Remember if it’s negatively geared it’s not necessarily making you money! Q. SHOULD EMPLOYEES IN MINING AND RESOURCES GET THEIR TAX DONE BY AN ACCOUNTANT WITH SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY? KPMG: There is value in using a tax advisor who not only has knowledge of the mining industry, but also has experience in dealing with individuals who are FIFO (or DIDO) or expatriates. Skilled advisors can calculate your income appropriately and ensure tax deductions or offsets are maximised. Specialist advisors can provide an insight to what other employees or employers are facing (as they usually have a number of clients with similar issues) and have experience in solving problems that may be common in the industry. n

Save real money

with a decent deposit I

t feels great to be heading into the warmer months and real estate agents around the country are enjoying the spring selling season – typically the busiest part of their year. Buyers are out in force encouraged by very low interest rates. But having a decent deposit can be the key money saver when you’re buying bricks and mortar. The amount you can borrow as a percentage of your home’s value is known as the ‘loan to valuation ratio’ or LVR. An LVR of 80%, meaning you have a 20% deposit, tends to be the benchmark for buying property though you can take out a mortgage with far less. Assuming you meet a lender’s basic criteria like having a regular income that’s sufficient for you to meet repayments, some lenders will happily provide loans for 90% – even 95%, of a property’s value. It means you could take out a loan for a home worth $500,000 with a down payment of as little as $25,000. This may be a very tempting strategy

20

Issue 31

especially as buying property also involves substantial upfront costs like stamp duty, prepurchase inspections and legal fees, which all eat into personal savings. However having the biggest possible deposit makes good financial sense. For starters, if you borrow 80% or more of a property’s value, your lender will ask you to pay lenders mortgage insurance (LMI). This is a one-off cost organised by your lender, and it’s a charge worth avoiding. LMI protects the lender, not you – the borrower, if you cannot keep up the loan repayments. In the event of the lender repossessing your home and selling it, LMI covers the lender if the sale price is below the outstanding loan balance. The greater worry is that LMI premiums can be extremely high. As a guide, buying that $500,000 property I mentioned earlier with a deposit of just $25,000 would result in an LMI premium of about $17,480. It you don’t have the cash on hand, you may

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

BY PAUL CLITHEROE

be able to capitalise LMI, meaning it’s added to the loan value and repaid over time. In the example noted above, this would mean paying back an extra $134 each month on top of your regular repayments. That sort of extra payment is like a massive hike in interest rates. Yet plenty of home buyers wear this cost because they don’t have a sizeable deposit. There are other benefits to having a reasonable down payment. You won’t need to borrow as much so your repayments will be lower and any future increases in interest rates will have less of an impact on your personal cash flow. I appreciate that for first home buyers especially it can be challenging to save a decent deposit. Nevertheless if you can manage it, you’ll be financially better off from day one. For ideas on building savings check out my book Making Money. To discover what you could be up for in lenders mortgage insurance, search for it online where you’ll find an LMI calculator. n

M

any property buyers want to invest in the resources boom. But buying houses in mining towns is among the riskiest of investments. While there is the allure of double-digit rental returns and windfall capital growth, there is also the danger of values collapsing in a mining

22

Issue 31

downturn. I'm often asked if there are safer ways to tap into the real estate demand generated by the resources sector. The answer is that there are several. One that few people think of is the potential of buying where the miners themselves buy.

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Rather than investing where those highlypaid mining personnel work, it makes more sense to buy where they choose to set up home. There are lifestyle markets where prices have started to rise because of the number of mining people targeting those areas to establish a home base. At Hotspotting.com.au, we call them the Miners Playgrounds. Increasingly, personnel in the resources sector are working in one place and living in another. Often there's a considerable distance between the two. The growing use of fly-infly-out by the major mining companies means workers stay in temporary accommodation while on shift and then fly home for their extended time off. Locations which have recently attracted buying demand from Queensland mining personnel include Hervey Bay, the Whitsundays, the Sunshine Coast and Cairns. These are all markets which have struggled in recent years but are now showing increasing signs of recovery. There are multiple reasons for this - and they include the buying power of well-paid mining personnel. In Western Australia, Mandurah is a popular target for workers in the iron ore industry. Once a growth market fuelled by sea change which made headlines around the nation, Mandurah declined after 2007, but more recently has made a comeback. Most suburbs in the City of Mandurah have delivered price growth in the past year ranging from moderate to strong – with the FIFO market a major influence. Most of the markets feeling the buying power of mining personnel are also places feeling the benefits of recovery in the tourism industry. I expect these locations to see solid growth for the rest of 2013 and beyond. n

Important cyclone information

T

he northern Australian cyclone season officially commenced on 1 November and extends to 30 April. Now is the time to prepare your site for the season so you are ready in the event that you are impacted by a cyclone or its affects. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has forecast this to be a “near average season. In Western Australia, an average year sees seven cyclones develop with two crossing the coast, one of which is severe. The effects of cyclones are extensive. Torrential rain, flooding and strong winds can be experienced a long way from the cyclone itself and create major hazards or strand vehicle and equipment. Consequently, it is important to understand the risks at your site and have emergency plans in place including evacuation plans and routes. All sites should have a comprehensive cyclone management plan including a checklist of actions to take at the start of the season - now. All personnel working in prone areas must be familiar with cyclone safety and your sites procedures. General information on cyclones can be found on the BoM and DMP websites while Digirock supplies cyclone plan and checklists from its online store (www.explorationonline.com.au). Digirock can also provide a tailored severe weather monitoring and warning service for clients otherwise unable to compile the relevant information. Should you have any questions regarding planning for the cyclone season, contact John Libby on (08) 9477 3747 or john@digirock.com.au. Mountain biking Margaret River BY ALY EVEILLE

W

hen you’re based on the East Coast ‘west is best’ is a saying heard often. So when the chance came to experience Western Australia for myself, I was excited to see if the locals really had something to brag about. And boy, do they ever. I was lucky enough to attend the annual Cape to Cape MTB and on the drive from Perth to Margaret River you can tell you’ve arrived when the wineries start to roll by. And although Margaret River has a special charm to it, there’s something spectacular about arriving into a town that’s buzzing with 1200 mountain bike riders ready to take on the Cape to Cape MTB challenge. This four-day endurance event is now in its sixth year and is just one of the many huge events that Margaret River hosts annually.

26

Issue 31

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Day one kicked off at Cape Leeuwin and this place is astounding. It’s where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. Imagine the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse as the backdrop for hundreds of mountain bike riders gathering to take on the twists and turns set out for them by the Cape to Cape crew. On the starting horn the riders rolled out in impressive style all dressed in their colourful splashes of lycra with very excited faces. They had been training for months and among them were world champions, elite professionals and even an Olympian. But those smiling faces were set to be strained when faced with a 4km uphill climb straight off the mark, ‘heartbreak hill’ they call it. This was dubbed the toughest day and along with the treacherous hill-climb, riders took on a sandy beach track, the hardest type of track according to many of

the competitors. Some riders even opted for ‘clown shoe’ wheels. These mountain bike wheels are 100mm wide and quite a spectacle, but the perfect tool for getting over those sand dunes nonetheless. After a day of darting through the bike track everything was wrapped up at Hamelin Bay. The gents in the race poured over the finish line, but it was the first female in, Jo-Anne Bennett, that really heard the crowd roar! A trip to Margaret River can’t be done without some sight seeing. I visited Lake Cave, where a newly built and partly transparent deck sits above a giant doline that is the opening to the cave. This is one of the most active caves in the South West with a permanent lake and stunning rock formations scattered throughout. Mammoth Cave is equally as picturesque. The

Ind Skippers Ad Nov13_Layout 1 12/11/13 1:35 PM Page 1 temperature instantly drops as you enter and the historical cave formations are remarkable. Prevelly Beach also should not be missed, and it’s not like the east coast beaches with crashing waves and powdery sand. Prevelly Beach is pristine, with clear water sitting above dark green rocks and soft hilly sand dunes that stretch all the way down to Gnarabup and beyond. But I wasn’t fooled by its serenity. Prevelly was wild enough to cater to a very keen and reasonably senior kite surfer! On day two of the Cape to Cape MTB, the Redbull Sundown Shootout took place. This gave riders a chance to shave time off their positions by making a downhill sprint in among the Margaret River Pine Plantation at dusk. Imagine the fastest qualifying mountain bike riders shooting down a dense pine tree slope with dirt jumps at the finish line to maximise their time, before flying beneath the Redbull arch and over the time line. XCE World Campion Paul Van Der Ploeg took on a mammoth jump and dislocated his shoulder but bounced back in time to continue with the rest of the Cape to Cape MTB. The buzzing atmosphere, playful sportsmanship and crazy costumes certainly made this event something special.

Day three was the first time the main street of Margaret River was closed for all Cape to Cape MTB riders to cruise down before their day of racing. While standing on a traffic island, hundreds of mountain bikers flew past in their bright lycra and kitted-up bikes. The colour was at an extreme with riders donning rainbow shoelaces attached to everything attachable in support of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation to support organ and tissue donation. The winner of Cape to Cape MTB amongst the men was Andy Blair and Jenny Fay took out the title for the girls. The best thing about this event though is the team spirit. Although it seems like it’s every mountain bike rider for themselves, there’s something special about standing at the bottom of a rainforest hill and having twenty riders roar down towards you, with a single rider in front shouting ‘left!’ to all his trailing competitors. That’s team spirit for you. n

But if you’re a memento type of person and want to keep a part of Fraser Suites Perth with you, the complimentary slippers are a treat. There’s something that this hotel should really be credited for though, and that’s the views. This isn’t the type of hotel where you make your reservation and hope for the best, only to relax once you’ve gotten to your room and the fears of facing a dumpster are over. Fraser Suites Perth sits on the edge of the city, so the picturesque displays of the sparkling Swan River and perfectly manicured streets are in abundance. And if you stay at the opposite end of the building, the scenery of the WACA Cricket Ground is hard to ignore. Booking your stay during the next cricket match might by your best idea yet! Here’s a hot tip… grab a delicious bottle of red, relax on your balcony and enjoy that everlasting Perth sunset!

V8 Supercar superstar drives home road safety message

O

ver one thousand people have died on our roads across Australia this year. That’s a big number. The Australian Government reports that the majority of road deaths are single vehicle accidents, but multiple vehicle accidents also sustain a large number of these tragedies. Sadly, many could be avoided. In the lead up to the Sydney 500 racing event, V8 Supercar driver Chaz Mostert attended Sutherland’s road safety initiative in a bid to help promote the importance of road safety and education. The Sutho Cops and Rodders Road Safety and Car Show promotes safe driving to young drivers which is something Chaz is passionate about.

“It’s hard being young, you want to go out and go fast,” Chaz said. “I think people should do this kind of thing on track days though and it’s important for people to make sure their cars are road legal,” he said. The road safety initiative focused on the impact that road tragedies have on families and exhibited the severity of major motor vehicle collisions. Some of the speakers from the day included road safety expert, Ian Luff and Ron Delezio, father of road victim, Sophie Delezio. Many others in attendance had experience in assisting in road trauma cases and were at the event to help reinforce the road safety message. Chaz explains how drivers can be more

responsible on the road, including keeping cars in a roadworthy condition. “Making sure tyres are up to standards and stuff like that is important,” Chaz said. “I know it’s hard for young apprentices and stuff, but it matters,” he said. “I’ve lost mates on the road so I’m really passionate about this,” he said. With this event taking place in the lead up to the festive season, it encourages drivers to take extra care during the holidays. Chaz suggests people drive less over the Christmas break. “Find a place to go and stay there,” he said. “Don’t drive if you don’t have to, enjoy your time and stay off the roads,” he said. FAMILY MATTERS

Three-word phrases for simple communication BY SARAH LONG, WWW.MININGFM.COM.AU

I

’ve been with my boyfriend for a couple of years now, and it’s fair to say he’s not a great communicator. He can fix anything I break (earrings, vacuum cleaner, furniture, you name it!), he’s got a great mind for problem solving and he’s way better than me at maths. But words are not his strong point. I would say that the majority of our

32

Issue 31

arguments are due to miscommunication (or even a complete lack of communication). Being raised on a farm with three brothers might have something to do with his lack of understanding when it comes to the subject of "talking to girls", but I think it’s also to do with the practical (and fairly simple) way his mind works. And I would dare to venture that this could be the same for many a tradie man out there.

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Now, I’m not suggesting that these otherwise lovely men of ours start spouting Shakespeare ("shake what?"’ I hear him say). But on occasion it would just be nice to hear what you need to hear - a simple affirmation of something that you already know, but means so much more when uttered by the one you love. For instance, last week I was working late so instead of putting away the clean

washing like normal, I just dumped it in the spare room. Well, you should have heard the bashing, slamming and 'I can’t find any clean undies' grumbling! If, sometime in the previous two years, he'd actually thanked me for always putting his washing away - I might have been more sympathetic and helped him out when he was desperately seeking his jocks. So for all you guys out there, he's a little list of handy three-word phrases what will improve your life out of sight, if you just speak plainly from time to time: 1. Thank you darling: (or sweetheart or love or pet name). When you come home and the house is clean, the dinner’s cooked, or the washing is done and your undies are exactly where you expect to find them, that’s not magic or fairies, that’s us. Please say thank you. 2. You look amazing: (or lovely or pretty ... even nice will do!) You know when her hair looks different or she’s spent some time getting ready to go out and you can’t quite put your finger on it, but it’s pleasing to you? That’s when you need to speak up. 3. You’re so hot: (or sexy or gorgeous). Please note this is not to be used to get her into bed, although if used very well you might get lucky! Make it known that she’s the one who still gets your blood boiling (throw in a kiss for luck too). 4. This is delicious: It might not be Cordon Bleu cookery; in fact it might just be a

sandwich. But if time and love have gone into preparing that meal, then please be grateful. And no, burping loudly afterwards does not count! 5. How was work: (or the kids or your day). You don’t have to solve all her problems. Just listen and nod along as she vents - it will earn you several brownie points. For further

instructions, the follow up to this is ‘Are you ok?’ 6. I miss you: If you think it, say it. There’s nothing wrong with missing someone and it will make her feel better about missing you too. 7. I love you: Use it wisely, sparingly and appropriately and it will mean more than anything. n

Travelling with kids – here’s the secret BY ELKA WHALAN

lka is a dual Olympian, wife to four time Olympian Thomas Whalan and proud mother to two young children. Every parent has some interesting stories of traveling with children. Many people see travelling with their kids as stressful before they even board the flight, but if you go in with that attitude how can you have a positive and healthy mindset - or a positive trip? Be honest with yourself knowing that having kids in tow will certainly be more challenging than travelling alone, or with other adults. When packing your bags think about what type of things you will need on the plane to entertain them - books, a charged up iPad with a few of their favourite shows, and some snacks. It doesn't matter where you sit in the plane, honestly children will not know the difference of their noise levels. Sometimes it's harder sitting up the front knowing people pay top dollar for peace! You can never guarantee the noise level with children, especially little ones. My husband often brings spare ear plugs along and hands them out to people sitting near us as a little consolation. The simplest tips I can recommend for super small bubs is make sure you have an extra pillow if you are breast feeding, and if you bottle feed then have the bottle ready to go so you just add water. Be organised and prepared. When it's sleep time, use your blankets and build a cubby house over them so it shuts out all lights and they know it's lights out time. Let them know the difference between day and night. For active children give them time to walk up and down the aisles, there are certainly times for stimulation and other quiet times as well. They will need to release their energy at some point. Be patient and endearing, and whilst it seems you may be on that flight forever, you wont be! Remind yourself that every minute you are closer to reaching your destination. Find a flight attendant you like and build a relationship with them. Also say yes to anyone willing to cuddle or entertain your children if it's your kids' awake time! Above all, try to relax yourself, try to sleep when your kids do. Know that they are children, they're not understanding of time differences or how long they are on that plane. Don't be nervous. Be organised and ready for anything and try to have fun and let the journey of flying be fun, not fiery! n

Don't be a divorce statistic: make your marriage work BY ANGIE WILCOCKS, WWW.MININGFM.COM.AU

O

ne in three marriages ends in divorce. None of us set out to fail, and we all do our best to make our marriages happy and successful. But do you know what makes a marriage survive? American psychologist Dr John Gottman claims that he can predict (“with 94% accuracy") which couples will end up divorcing. He bases this claim on a number of studies of married couples, observed over many years. Gottman said he could tell from the way couples interacted, even early on, which ones would struggle to stay together. What he found was pretty amazing and, given the importance of relationships to our wellbeing, I wonder why we’re not taught this sort of stuff at school! Gottman has written some great books about his findings, including The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and The Relationship Cure. Here are some of the important parts. Principles for successful relationships: • Know your partner: This might sound simple, but what Gottman noticed is that happy couples know a lot about their partner. They know historical as well as current information, like their partner’s favourite food, their hobbies and interests, who their childhood friends were, who they admire, what their dreams and fears are and what their ideal holiday would be, among other many other things. • Nurture your fondness and admiration: Happy couples like one another, and hold a generally positive view of each other. They appreciate each other and can recognise each other’s strengths and qualities. • Turn toward each other: Turning toward your partner means letting them know that you are interested, and that you care, each and every day (and not just on special occasions). This is about sending an

36

Issue 31

encouraging text message when you know your wife is having a busy day at work, taking a minute to listen to your husband’s worries, or making sure you let your partner know you’re running late. • Let your partner influence you: This isn’t about letting one person be your “boss”; it’s about working as a team, respecting your partner’s point of view, making decisions together and looking for compromise and common ground. • Overcome gridlock: This refers to talking to each other in new ways about the complicated and long-standing problems and disagreements, rather than just repeating the same old patterns of arguments. • Create shared meaning: Shared meaning can come from shared goals, shared values, shared interests, family traditions, and generally building a shared life that is about the two of you, not just the kids and the chores. One way to start to create shared meaning is to talk openly with your partner about your dreams as an individual and as a family, and to be open to hearing theirs.

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Beware damaging relationship behaviours • Criticism: A criticism differs from a complaint in that it involves attacking your partner’s personality or character, rather than focusing on the specific behaviour that bothers you. It is healthy to air disagreements, but it’s unhealthy to attack your partner in the process. • Contempt: Contempt often takes the form of nastiness or sarcasm and involves being intentionally hurtful and insulting to your partner. Contempt is an open sign of disrespect. • Defensiveness: This refers to how people behave in the face of conflict or disagreement. Defensiveness is a problem because it makes even simple problems hard to solve and full of conflict. • Stonewalling: Stonewalling is a step up from defensiveness. People who stonewall simply refuse to respond to their partner’s attempts to discuss concerns or problems. They shut them out, turn away and disengage. Habitual stonewalling is very damaging to relationships because it makes problems unsolvable. It also leaves one partner feeling alone, hurt, isolated and unheard. n

SPORT FEVER

NUTRI-GRAIN SERIES

3

2 of Australia’s elite Ironmen and Ironwoman will battle it out across six rounds for the title of Nutri-Grain Series Champion! The NutriGrain Series comprises of six rounds this season with rounds 1 and 2 kicking off at Smiths Beach, WA on November 30 and December 1. This will be followed by rounds 3, 4 and 5 at Newcastle, NSW on December 14 and 15 finishing with the final at Coolum, QLD on February 23. Contest Director, Zane Holmes, said all three venues were home to fantastic waves and the athletes were looking forward to being challenged. WA Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said it was a great coup for WA to host the first two rounds of the NutriGrain Series and to be named as one of only three states to feature in the competition. Inflight Publishing editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a chat to one of the competitors, Ironman Matt Poole. MATT YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL IRONMAN, WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY ‘IN THE OFFICE’ FOR YOU? WHAT SORT OF TRAINING AND FOOD PREP DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO BE THE BEST? To be the best in my sport requires a lot of dedication and hard work training all four disciplines; swim, board, ski and running. I train 2-3 times a day 6 days a week for 10 months of the year. As I get older now Nutrition is playing a huge role in helping

38

Issue 31

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

me to train and compete at my best. When I was young I could eat anything I want and run around all day. Now at 25 I have to watch what I eat and make sure I'm eating loads of food to keep my energy levels up; lots of protein, carbs and fresh fruit and vegetables basically. I use a lot of pre race/ training hydration supplements to help me perform also, I drink loads of water throughout the day and my secret is a can of Red Bull before I race for energy and caffeine. TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR WITH THE IRONMAN SERIES? HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS? I grew up at the beach, spent my whole life surfing, swimming and competing in Surf Life Saving. I played a lot of sports when I was younger, but Ironman racing always came naturally to me. I made my first professional series at age 18 and have now been competing in the Kellogg's Nutri- Grain Ironman series for 6 years soon to be 7. In my career so far I have won 3 races, and twice finished on the podium in the overall series. THIS IS A PRETTY FULL ON SPORT, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU CAN COME UP AGAINST IN THE WATER? Our sport is very challenging, not only are we racing the guys beside us but we are also challenging Mother Nature and sometimes she can be VERY unpredictable. The best thing about our sport is waves can either make or break your day, there’s nothing better than the feeling of catching a wave from behind and taking the lead, but on the other side of the coin when you are leading and the back markers join you through luck of a wave it is devastating. THE NUTRI-GRAIN SERIES RECENTLY KICKED OFF, THE COMPETITION COMPRISES OF SIX ROUNDS, HOW TOUGH IS IT TO PREPARE YOURSELF BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS? It is tough to prepare to race, but as a professional athlete this is my job; to race and to race well. Like a car salesman has to sell cars to survive, I have to try and win races! Physically we train hard all the time, and this dedication is something that becomes routine with time. We make sure our bodies are fit and strong enough to compete at our best; the hardest part is mentally getting yourself ready. Every athlete has a different approach to races, some like to relax and laugh others like to isolate themselves and get ready and in "the zone". You can be as fit and strong as ever, but if you mentally don't believe in yourself and get yourself ready to race and deal with setbacks, media, and negative things that may arise in the lead up, you will struggle as an athlete to be successful. Both mental and physical training is equally important to me as an athlete. WHAT SORT OF SURF CONDITIONS SUIT YOU BEST? At 6'4 and 90kg's I'm one of the bigger and stronger guys in the Ironman series so I tend to prefer big waves and sprint formats. A lot of the smaller guys are super fit and light giving them

a good advantage with endurance events and smaller flatter conditions. WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE YOUR TOUGHEST COMPETITION IN THIS SERIES? This year’s series will be one of the toughest I have ever competed in; there are about 6 or 7 guys that I think can win the series, but I definitely feel I'm one of those guys so hopefully with a bit of luck and some good results you will see me on that podium a bit this season :) HOW DO YOU BLOW OFF STEAM AFTER THE SERIES ENDS? IS THERE A SPECIAL POST EVENT RITUAL? We train hard and don't have much of a party lifestyle when we are in training; I love the fit and healthy lifestyle we live when we are training, but once we are finished and it's time to let the hair down I love to party and have a good time... sometimes maybe too much ha! I also enjoy

travelling and surfing so usually like to getaway and spend some quality time seeing different cultures and parts of the world. It makes it all the more enjoyable when It's time to get back into training again. MATT YOU ARE ALSO PART OF THE CHANNEL 9 SERIES, DEEP WATER – WHAT’S THIS EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE? Ha! Yeah I "was"....Until I broke my leg in challenge 4 the "Rock wallaby" run through Kalbarri national park. I slipped off a 4ft ledge and broke my fibula halfway through an 8km time trial run; I finished the challenge and ran 4km on a broken leg. Having said that though The Deep Water series was by far one of the best experiences I've ever had, Western Australia is such a different and beautiful part of our country and I had never experienced it like that before, I just wish I didn't have to come home early on crutches! n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

Once it’s under way, and with regular water and a little shade, mint will grow vigorously, so pots are the best option. With just a little TLC you will have flourishing mint all summer long to garnish your classic lemonades, iced teas, watermelon salads or to shred through jugs of mojitos.

2. Grow rocket yourself - at home Baby rocket is ideal to have on hand in your garden for summer salads, to add crunch to sandwiches and as a great side dish. Baby rocket is sweet and nutty as opposed to grown rocket which is often quite spicy. The advantage of growing rocket at home is that it grows extremely quickly, and is also easy to grow from seed. Simply sprinkle the seeds on soil, lightly cover with seed-raising mix and water gently for a moist start to some healthy salad greens.

versatile lillypillies for festive gardening While lillypillies are hardy and generally easy to maintain they can be prone to pests and diseases, especially psyllids, so check for any deformed new growth, little lumps or spots before you buy, and check regularly once you have your plant at home. A quick wipe or spray with White Oil insecticide will cure most issues for lillypillies. Lillypilly hedging and topiary are perfect for low maintenance and quick growing ornamental decoration in gardens. 5. Grow your own Christmas tree Wollemi Pines are a great option for an authentic and very merry Christmas vibe around the house and garden. By having your own native Christmas tree, not only will you not need to buy another one next year, but you will also be helping conserve a unique endangered species as the Wollemi Pine is one of the world’s oldest and rarest trees and was discovered in Australia. s a society that is always on the move, it’s no surprise technology is helping us work faster, access easier and share broader. Or perhaps it’s the technology that is shaping the way we live, work and play. Either way the pace is increasing and these little devices that were the size of a small brick not so long ago, are now slimmer, lighter and much better equipped. And just when we thought technology had covered all bases, Samsung introduces the Galaxy Tab 3 range to Australia. These new editions feature a selection of sizes that range from seven to ten inches and with a bunch of other exciting trimmings; Samsung is continuing to cater to the diverse needs of Australian’s. This is the next phase in Samsungs evolution as an innovator in mobile technology. Australian’s are getting a great product choice to better suit their lifestyle, diverse features and greater access to local and international content. The range will offer users enhanced and intuitive design features created to support the growing demand for tablets in Australia. Tablets are being used in aeroplanes, at retail stores and at restaurants. Times are changing and Samsung is helping us keep up! In fact, in two years the percentage of Australians 14 years and over that own or use a tablet has more than quadrupled from 7% in February 2011 to 34% in February 2013. Gone are the days of sitting on the couch to show off your recent holiday photos or waiting until a big family event to make a special announcement. If someone falls pregnant, chances are you’ll find out about it on Facebook and if you recently went on a month long holiday to Europe, chances are everyone will have already seen your travel photos before
