But Grumpy Cat is much more than a meme: the Internet’s leading cat curmudgeon is now an author, penning Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book. Filled with fun activities, classic quips, snarky put-downs, and (of course) new photos of Grumpy Cat doing grumpy things, this book cements Grumpy Cat’s status as the banner-bearer for the eternally grumpy. Fast Living Slow Ageing

Founded in the middle of AFL heartland, Melbourne Storm fast established itself as one of the greatest teams in the league. Winning three of five grand finals and producing some of the best players in the history of the game, the club seemed infallible. But in 2010 it was exposed as a fraud; the club had been rorting the salary cap. It was fined and stripped of its premierships; staff were fired and shamed. Yet, no one was charged. And, just two years later the team had another premiership in its hands. The rise, fall and rise of the Melbourne Storm happened in a heartbeat. Storm Cloud by Paul Kennedy reveals the hidden story.

Empower yourself with the knowledge to slow down the ageing process, prevent disease and live healthier! In the fully-revised and updated version of the best-selling book Fast Living Slow Ageing, Australian authors Kate Marie and Professor Merlin Christopher Thomas, along with over fifty health experts, have assembled a comprehensive, research–based guide to slowing down the ageing process, allowing readers to make their choices based on evidence and understanding. The book provides guidance on everything from exercise to hormones, nutrition to stress management, and combines all the information into an easy to follow ‘Slow Ageing’ program that also helps readers achieve a healthier diet, clearer skin, better physical fitness and mental resilience. This isn’t a quick-fix guide to stop ageing, but provides the tools to slow down the process so readers can embrace ageing as a positive experience and enjoy it in good health.

FIGHTING FIT

Rob Schneider Inflight Publishing Editor Lahnee Pavlovich has a chat with funny man Rob Schneider about his upcoming Live tour around the land down under. And yes, he is just as lovely and just as hilarious on the phone as he is on the screen!

R

OB, THANKS FOR HAVING A CHAT TO ME TODAY. NOW YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR LIVE STAND-UP TOUR TO AUSTRALIA IN OCTOBER, YOU HAVE VISITED US BEFORE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PLACE? Australia is actually one of my favourite places to go and one of the only places my wife gets excited about visiting. It’s like the size of the US with the population of Los Angeles. The food is nice, the people have a great sense of humour. Actually most of the artwork I own is from Australia; I have quite a few pieces of Aboriginal artwork. They are so beautiful. And I love the adventurous spirit Aussies

8

Issue 21

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

have. Only about 20% of Americans have a passport, pretty much every Aussie has one. They have this sense of travel. I’ve never been to a place anywhere in the world and not ran into an Aussie. In fact, I was literally on a glacier in Iceland, on a snow mobile, covered in ice gear and this guy comes up to me and says ‘how you goin mate, you know where we can get a good beer around ere?’. It’s great! AND DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT? Australia is just so enormous. There’s a lot I haven’t seen yet but I’m really excited to perform at the Opera House, it’s an iconic venue and you have to be an accomplished performer to get the

chance to perform there so that’s a big honour. Sydney Harbour is one of the prettiest in the world. I also love Perth, the people are great and Melbourne is good too because it’s one of the only places I can buy a suit that fits me. There are so many short Greeks in Melbourne, wide and short like me – so the suits fit perfectly! Brisbane is also very lovely. YOU ARE PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR YOUR COMEDIC ACTING ROLES, YOU’VE DONE MOVIES LIKE DEUCE BIGALO, GROWN-UPS, THE ANIMAL – WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE ROLE TO PLAY AND WHY? Duece Bigalow was a lot of fun. Big Stan,

the prison movie was great and I think doing 50 First Dates was probably one of my favourites. The Hot Chick was pretty funny playing a teenage girl. I don’t think I could do any of that again though. It will actually be pretty fun when my little girl grows up and gets to see those movies – but not until she’s about 15.

It’s an incredible process, and you know they say if Shakespeare was alive, he’d be a film maker. The downside to film is that it’s expensive, has its ups and downs and it can break even the greatest. Show business is tough. Stand up is rewarding, you are standing in front of an audience that are all excited to see you.

THIS MONTH YOU ARE IN AUSTRALIA WITH YOUR LIVE TOUR, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE? The show is really just different forms of midlife crisis. Stuff people can relate to. I mean my wife and I had an accidental baby 10 months ago and it turned out to be one of the best things to happen in my life. Most accidents are. And of course there are a lot of jokes in the show. THE TYPES OF CHARACTERS YOU PLAY ARE PRETTY OUT THERE AND VERY FUNNY, IS YOUR STAND-UP SIMILAR? I think the stand-up has aged better; it’s a little more mature but still inane, a bit dirty and naughty. It’s hard to shock people anymore, they see so much, but I want people to laugh, and have a laugh at themselves as well. I try to mix it all up and have a bit of fun. YOU STARTED OFF DOING COMEDY AS A TEENAGER THEN MOVED INTO THE BIG FILMS, BUT WENT BACK TO STAND-UP IN 2011 WAS IT? It was actually 2009 but I’d gotten good at it by 2011. AND WHAT DO YOU PREFER, STAND-UP OR FILM? I really enjoy doing stand-up; it’s challenging performing to a live audience. And it’s wonderfully contemporary. No show is the same and you have this amazing chance to connect with the audience and bring them together. Then with film, there is something immortal about it. The magic of film is that the cameras capture these legends and you see a reflection of them on the screen, even after they are long gone. If you can make people laugh in film,

WHAT ABOUT THE ROB SCHNEIDER WE DON’T SEE ON STAGE OR ON THE BIG SCREEN? Well hopefully I’m smarter, better mannered, more handsome. I think I’m probably a bit more serious, dry, shorter than on screen.

that’s a rare thing, and people remember it for ever. And you have the ability to enhance the experience with music, editing, and other actors. Following a sold out tour in 2011, Emmy-nominated actor Rob Schneider, well known for his trademark blend of character and comedic acting, returns to Australia for his national tour. Schneider began writing jokes as a teenager and made his major network debut in 1987 on The David Letterman Show. Then it was into the big time with a host of films under his belt including Deuce Bigalow, Big Stan, 50 First Dates, The Hot Chick, The Animal and countless others with longtime pal Adam Sandler for Happy Madison Productions.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE? I want to do a few more movies, but I don’t feel a crushing determination like when I started out. There are still things I want to try and accomplish. But hanging out with my wife and daughter is my top priority. They are coming on this tour with me. I’m really excited about that; getting to share this experience with my family. In fact, this may just be my last Live tour. I’m doing it out of love to the fans in Aus who have always supported my movies. n Now, after nearly 20 years, Schneider returns to stand-up and is bringing his antics down under. The SBS Feast Cooking Demonstration Arena will feature Luke Nguyen, Gabriele Gate and Patrick Friesen alongside local chefs, plus there will be live music at the Sundowner River Stage, children’s entertainment beneath an ancient fig tree, and wandering musicians. This event attracted a record 16,000 people last year. The program also features intimate events at farms, restaurants, wineries and breweries. RELATIONSHIP MATTERS

W

Fifo lovin’ BY ALY EVEILLE

hat do you enjoy most about your relationship? Sunday spooning? Having an unfailing date for any occasion? Maybe you’re in one of those relationships where a little time apart gives you an excuse to make time together that bit more special. That's how I look at it anyway. Being the partner of a FIFO worker isn't for everyone. Despite that attractive pay cheque, some couples need daily interaction and the idea of having a ‘three on, one off’ love life just isn’t attainable for everyone. So fellas, if you’re struggling to find the right balance with your chaotic roster, consider these words of wisdom from a seasoned long-distance FIFO girlfriend. Laptop, mobile, tablet – pick one and pick it up! Twelve-hour days are tough but we still want to hear about it. The hardest thing about my bloke being on site is the difficulty of making plans. Dedicated communication time is king! Don’t underestimate the power of positivity. Use your time off as an excuse to plan a special weekend. Head out to that new Steakhouse or grab a hotel for weekend. Your other half will love it and let’s face it, you can afford it! Appreciate home and take advantage of it! That means – kick off those steel caps and relax! I’m sure you’ve earned it and chances are you’ve been missed enough to have breakfast in bed whipped up for you (on one day, at least). So when you’re slipping into that second working week and are feeling nostalgic, just remember that you don’t have to help with dinner once for the rest of your roster! You won’t be asked to take the bin out or wash the car... Realistically, you’ve got it made. Except for that whole getting up at 4am thing. We don’t envy you there! n

MONEY MATTERS

Low risk super puts a better retirement at risk I

’m a firm believer that superannuation has a lot going for it. Without super many Australians would end up facing a very thrifty retirement, and because we can’t normally access our super until preservation age – between 55 and 60 depending on when you were born, our nest egg benefits from healthy long term returns. Just what sort of returns your fund will achieve depends on the investment option you select for your super. According to research group SuperRatings, last year was a bumper one for super with balanced funds delivering returns of around 11.7% for the 2012 calendar year. The key driver was returns of 17.9% for Australian shares and 13.6% for international shares. Many people are surprised to learn that ‘balanced’ funds have a sizeable proportion – usually around 60% to 70% of the fund’s money

invested in share markets. It’s a strategy that makes a lot of sense though. Quality shares grow in value over time to provide capital gains that add to ongoing dividend income. Both help to grow your super. The downside is that equity markets move in cycles, and the value of your super can take a hit at times when shares are experiencing dips. But over the long run the upswings will more than make up for the downturns. This is an important issue to consider when it comes to choosing how your super is invested. A recent industry survey found that one in two young workers would choose a ‘low risk’ option. During the height of the financial crisis when stock markets tanked, many people did just that – shifting their nest egg from balanced or growth options to low risk choices. On the face of it, choosing a low risk strategy for your super can seem like a good idea. After

all, none of us want to jeopardise our retirement nest egg. That catch is that low risk equals low returns. By ticking the low risk box on your fund’s menu of options you face the prospect that your super may not earn sufficient returns to outpace inflation. It all highlights the need to understand how your super is invested – and whether it’s the best choice for your life stage. If you are in, or near, retirement switching at least part of your nest egg to low risk investments can be a sensible strategy and your financial adviser can help you with this decision. For the rest of us, choosing a balanced, growth or high growth strategy will see your fund’s value move around from year to year. Over time however you should reap the rewards of higher returns - and that means more money to live on in retirement. n

4 foods you should

never eat again. EVER.

isolate (a refined, often genetically-modified form of soy that pops up in a lot of soy-based products). Processed soy boosts the hormone estrogen in your body and some research has shown that it can increase the risk of cancer, weight gain, acne and infertility in women.

uinoa with grass fed protein powder for breakfast. Dominated. Organic green tea – yes, currently sipping. Acai berry. Ahhhh – say what? There is a new trend emerging with the latest super foods to eat and keep on our radar, but what about the bad stuff not to touch. Here are the top 4 foods that you should never eat again. Avoid them like you do your ex.

The cold side of cold cuts: A bite of your BBQ meat lover pizza might seem like your tastebuds are entering nirvana after a weekend of debauchery and long necks. Salami, ham, roast beef and other deli meats are poor quality, packed with sodium and made from animals raised on hormones and antibiotics. Strong evidence was unravelled that eating processed meat is linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer and a suggested link with lung, stomach, prostate and oesophageal cancer.

Sweet deception: Yes I get it you’re sweet enough so you cut the sugar and go artificial. Rookie mistake. Not only

The white stuff:

have fake sweeteners been linked to people not losing weight but they contain a list of alleged medical issues to promote a seizure. Aspartame which is found in most diet drinks and chewing gum has been linked to a number of diseases, can impair the immune system, and is even known to cause cancer. If it is made in a lab, it's probably better to avoid it.

Soy ya later: For all those soy latte sipping health fanatics, sorry to pop your soy bubble but this is not a healthy food group. All soy isn't bad albeit. However you don’t want to be touching the

It's unfortunate so many peeps think the right fuel for starting their day means grabbing a doughy white roll or dunking their spoon in a bowl of cereal. When you eat a lot of sugar, the carbohydrates get used up quickly and your blood sugar shoots up. As a result, your brain quits making orexin, and without this neuropeptide you will feel bloated and want to crawl under your desk to have a nap.

FIGHTING FIT

This is INSANE Y’all! WHEN YOU ARE STRAPPED FOR TIME, HAVE NO ACCESS TO A GYM, WORK IRREGULAR, LONG HOURS, FITTING IN A WORKOUT IS TOUGH. OR IS IT?

U

S fitness guru Shaun-T has developed a 60 day, do-it-at-home workout DVD program INSANITY. And it’s insane! In fact, it’s been said that INSANITY is the hardest workout programme ever put on DVD. Shaun T will push you past your limits with 10 workout discs packed with plyometric drills on top of nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance, and ab and core training moves. No equipment or weights needed. Just the will to get the hardest body you've ever had. Are you ready to dig deep? Your Editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a chat to Shaun-T about what to expect. Q. Hey Shaun, can you tell me a bit about yourself and how you got into fitness? A. When I was in college, school work and my schedule got in the way, and I was like "I can't do it today." I didn't even think about staying fit really. At one point I was 50 pounds overweight. I looked back and was like, this is ridiculous. I need to stop making excuses. That's actually what propelled me into becoming the fitness instructor that I am today.

Q. Why is it so important for people to live healthy lifestyles and to get fit? A. There is nothing more important than how someone treats themselves both inside and outside. Your body is your equipment. It's a machine. You have to keep your machine healthy. Q. What’s the difference between your programs and other programs out there? A. INSANITY is training that utilises your own body weight to get the results you want. This type of training gives you strength and endurance in the same workout. No gym, no weights, no equipment, just your own body’s resistance. Q. Can you tell me a bit about the style of training people will be doing in the INSANITY program and why it works? A. INSANITY works because I took traditional interval training and flipped it on its head. I call it MAX Interval Training. In the workouts, you do longs bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you

alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals. I can be tough but my goal is to keep people motivated and to push everyone to do their best. Q. What’s the most important thing to remember when starting out on the program? A. Stay committed each and every day. No one should have to persuade you to do it. If you're hesitant or have a minute of doubt, INSANITY probably isn't for you. It's about 40 minutes per day at first. When you get to month two, the max interval part, I'd map out an hour each day, which includes stretching and cooling down. That hour a day will become a gift to yourself. I've had people who weigh more than 300 pounds do it, and they just modify it. You mostly need to be mentally ready. Q. How will people feel throughout the program from start to finish? A. It may be hard at first but just stay with it. People feel amazing when they finish. Not just because of their physical results but also the great accomplishment of staying with it and doing something truly positive. Finishing is a badge of honour. The number one thing to remember is to stay committed, even though you will sometimes lose self-motivation because it’s tough, every time you finish a workout pat yourself on the back and know you're one step closer! Q. I’m about to embark on this journey myself, any tips on how to get through the 60 days? A. The first two weeks is when we see the highest percentage of quitting. And it's because they are just totally exhausted. I suggest those people do that day's workout the best they can. Q. Any other information you’d like to add? A. Dig Deep! Visit www.beachbody.com.au (Check out our next edition to see how your Editor Lahnee went on the INSANITY challenge!) n

dust: A CAUSE FOR CONCERN T

he risk to human health can be severe in situations where dust is poorly controlled. Choosing an effective dust suppression solution is an effective way to mitigate the problem. People living or working in close proximity to environments that produce substantial levels of dust are vulnerable to significant health risks. Managing Director of Tecpro Australia Graeme Cooper said areas such as mining environments or in corridors where coal is being transported or offloaded can experience problems with fugitive dust. “For people close by, some types of dust can cause irritation and inflammation such as rhinitis or bronchitis. Irritable dust can usually be eliminated from the body by its natural defence system such as coughing or sneezing. But there are also some types of dust that are respirable which can cause irreversible harm,” he said. Mr Cooper said the degree of potential harm is influenced by a number of factors. These include the chemical or mineralogical composition of the dust, its concentration, the size and shape of the particles and the length of time a person is exposed to the dust. “The types of dust that are harmful to humans include silica, coal, asbestos, synthetic mineral fibres, cotton, wood, animal and vegetable dusts,” Mr Cooper said. “They can cause problems ranging from allergic reactions to breathlessness or in the case of asbestos dust, cancer. And where organic dusts accumulates – such as around flour, grain, or wood milling – an explosion hazard is another potential risk. “In these types of environments, a spark or hot surface could ignite the dust, causing a serious blast.” Visit www.tecpro.com.au n

YOUR PLACE

DIY bathroom renovation Should you do-it-yourself? FROM WWW.HOMEDESIGNDIRECTORY.COM.AU

D

IY renovations can be a satisfying and cost saving process, but should you do it all yourself? Most DIY renovators do the project management, demolition, colour scheme selection, source the fixtures and fittings, remove and install most fittings such as hooks and towel rails and paint. However, unless they are really skilled, they contract the specialist trades of bricklaying, electrics, plumbing and tiling.

Does your bathroom need a full redesign or just a makeover? What to do and how much to spend on your DIY bathroom project really depends on how much it is used. A family using one bathroom warrants more upgrade and facilities (like double showers and basins) than a one person bathroom. Careful re-design can make a bathroom more spacious and provide more storage however changing the configuration costs money because it usually means new plumbing, and possibly alterations to wall construction, windows and doors. To see whether your bathroom should be reconfigured to make it more practical, you can buy one of the many simple computer

programs for creating house plans and play with different layouts. Alternatively, make paper shapes of bathroom components (to scale) and move them around a scale drawing of the room space. Once done, draw up elevations with wall dimensions and positions of existing doors and windows etc. If your bathroom needs to be reconfigured, you may have to strip it back to the floors and walls and rebuild it from new. But if the layout is fine and the waterproofing is sound, you can renovate your bathroom relatively cheaply. A dramatic difference can be made by simply changing the colour scheme, re-tiling over the old floor tiles, replacing cabinets and replacing the toilet. There are even bathroom resurfacing products that can put a new surface over old coloured tiles or chipped and dated bathtubs.

How long do bathroom renovations take? If you use a specialist bathroom renovation professional the bathroom is likely to be out of commission for 4 weeks.

Renovation legals Whether you DIY or not, you don't need council approval to renovate a bathroom

unless you significantly alter the plumbing or alter the windows.

The fabrication sequence The usual sequence when renovating a bathroom is • Strip-out (with pipes sealed) • Rough-in of plumbing and electrics • Rendering walls • Waterproofing • Fit out for shower, vanity, toilet • Tiling • Shower screen installation • Final electrical wiring • Final plumbing • Vanity and bench tops installation • Tap installation • Painting It's best to consult trade's people about how and where to waterproof. In older homes not all areas were waterproofed and problems can arise. You can remove tiles and waterproof and re-tile, or waterproof with old tiles in situ. The building code requires only the shower area to be waterproofed, but plenty of builders recommend spending more money and waterproofing a large portion (or all) of a bathroom. n
