The State Government’s Economic Directions Statement Queensland Airports released last month confirmed this – which also means Mackay is the busiest domestic only airport in Queensland! We always put our passengers first so we hope you are enjoying all the recent improvements we’ve made at Mackay Airport. Following the installation of our bright new furniture and fittings we’ve listened to our customers and created two new designated smoking areas. One is landside, in the garden area outside the terminal beyond Baggage Claim. This new location helps keep the front entrances to the terminal clear and comfortable for all airport users, while smokers can enjoy the pleasant garden area designated for their use. The second area within the Outdoor Observation Area offers people the convenience of a designated smoking area beyond security screening. This month we’ve reinforced Mackay Airport’s strong commitment to the region by renewing our sponsorship of Mackay Tourism. Mackay is gaining recognition as a tourist destination with our natural attractions of islands and national parks, venues such as the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre and high profile events such as the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival and the upcoming international Wakesessions Australia. We are also a popular access point for the Whitsundays. We look forward to continuing our support for Mackay Tourism as they work to attract more visitors to the region. In closing I’d like to share a couple of hints to help you enjoy a smooth journey next time you fly. Make sure you are prepared to go through security screening before you reach the actual screening point. This speeds up the process for you and everyone else. Check your pockets for keys, phones etc. If you have steel capped boots or shoes containing any metal, metal belt buckles or jewellery take off these items and place them in the trays provided. Lap tops must be taken out of their bags and placed in a tray. Aerosols must have caps securely fitted. Sharp objects including knives and scissors are not permitted. When I was working in a kitchen, my head chef used to film his TV show and the producer asked me to be part of the show as he thought I would be good on television and now the rest is history. I think Australian and Spanish cultures are very similar - we both love to share special moments with friends and family so it has been very easy to incorporate my Spanish soul into my Australian life. Another thing I do is solely speak Spanish to my daughter so she will be bilingual and able to speak to my parents in Spain. Eating churros for breakfast and having a siesta on a Sunday are still my two favourite things.

is coming

to Brisvegas

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP IS COMING TO BRISBANE ON DECEMBER 7 FOR THE FIRST TIME

he main event, UFC Fight Night is a five-round battle between heavyweights Hunt vs Bigfoot which will see fans from across the state and even a few diehards from across the country flock to the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane. Mark ‘The Super Samoan’ Hunt will take on Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva inside the octagon in front of a packed out crowd. UFC Director of Operations in Australia, New Zealand and Canada Tom Wright said the UFC had a long term commitment to bring the sport, the athletes and the brand to as many cities across Australia as possible. “Brisbane will represent the third city in Australia where we’ve hosted an event and we’re all very excited to be bringing an amazing card to our fans this December,” Tom said. Fighting out of Sydney, Hunt (9-8) is a former K1 World Grand Prix Champion who has won four of his last five bouts (three by knockout). The 39-year-old earned Knockout of the Night honours in his only other professional mixed martial arts bout in Australia, when he defeated Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 127 in Sydney in February 2011. Silva (18-5) most recently fought for the world heavyweight title in July 2013 when he suffered a first-round technical knockout against UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. The 33-year-old had earned the title shot with impressive back-to-back knockout wins over veterans Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem. UFC FIGHT NIGHT: HUNT vs. BIGFOOT will be Australia’s fifth-ever UFC event and second in Queensland following a December 2012 visit to the Gold Coast and three stops in Sydney since 2010. TELL ME A BIT ABOUT HOW YOU GOT INTO MMA AND THE UFC? I got into MMA in 2004 after a lot of incentive from my first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teacher, Eli Wanderley. I did my first fight in the UFC in May of 2012, after Strike Force was bought by the UFC. Some athletes migrated over, and I was one of them. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY OF TRAINING FOR YOU? It includes varied training sessions including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Muay-Thai and physical preparation. YOU’RE ABOUT 6’4 AND 120KG WHICH MAKES YOU A HEAVYWEIGHT, WHAT’S IT LIKE FIGHTING IN THIS DIVISION? Each category has its challenges, especially this one because of the strength of the fighters, which adds a little flavour. CAN YOU TELL ME YOUR STATS, HOW MANY FIGHTS, HOW MANY WINS? 18 wins and 5 losses (13 wins by knockout, 3 by submission, 2 by decision). Celebrate Australia Day in the ocean

ow four years old, the ocean swim series has embedded its place on the national calendar, and the final on January 26, 2014 will be the first event to launch Australia Day Celebrations in Sydney. More than 1000 swimmers, including Ky himself, are expected to take to the waters of Sydney Harbour for a patriotic ending to the four-race swim series. The Sydney Swim will cap a spectacular four race ocean swim series, held at Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most iconic and beautiful beaches along the east coast of Australia between May 2013 and January 26 2014. The next in the series before the culmination is the Great Hamilton Island Swim- Whitehaven Beach, on November 17 2013. HOW MANY COMPETED OVER WHAT DISTANCES? The second event in the BodyScience Great Australian Swim series went very well. The weather was perfect and the water was a beautiful 22 degrees and crystal clear; we even had a few whales cruise past in the background. With several hundred competitors taking part ranging from 8 years old through to 74 they all seemed to enjoy the 3 different distances on offer, from the 300m kids swim, 750m and my favourite the 2.2km.

THE NEXT RACE IN THE SERIES IS HAMILTON ISLAND...HOW MANY WILL TAKE TO THE ISLAND WATERS THERE? Being such a new event Hamilton Island is seeing numbers grow each year. The Hamilton Island Whitehaven Ocean swim weekend offers not just a swim but a triathlon the day before and is a fantastic weekend away for both the serious competitor or family and friends. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT TO THE OTHER RACES IN THE SERIES? This is one of the only swims in Australia that you have to take a ferry to reach the swim destination. As the swim is run parallel to the iconic Whitehaven beach, competitors take the ferry from Hamilton Island and back making it a fun day out on the water. Whitehaven Beach is definitely a destination everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. WHAT COMPETITORS ARE ATTRACTED TO THAT EVENT? The Whitehaven Beach swim is getting a range of competitors from triathletes to open water and pool swimmers through to weekend warriors and beginners. The shorter 800m distance is a perfect entry point for anyone wanting to have their first ocean swim. THE SERIES CULMINATES WITH THE SWIM ON AUSTRALIA DAY IN SYDNEY HARBOUR, HOW SPECIAL IS THAT TO YOU AS A RACE ORGANISER AND AS A COMPETITOR? I feel so lucky to be able to offer an ocean

swim in our backyard at the Opera House on such a historical day. It's beautiful and so special to be able to look up and see the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House from the water. HOW DOES IT FIT IN THE NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS? It's a perfect way to start Australia Day with the BodyScience swim one of the first events up on the day's activities. Once competitors have finished the swim mid-morning they are able to sit back and enjoy the rest of the Australia Day festivities that Sydney has to offer. have never been to France but I imagine it will have that airy feel about it; rolling hills in the countryside, alfresco dining in the cities, summer days and nights filled with romance, relaxation, exceptional wines and even better food. I imagine it to resemble Spicers Clovelly Estate in Montville on the Sunshine Coast, QLD. Hidden on a hill in the lush Sunshine Coast Hinterland is a place that is part retreat, part European estate, part luxury lodge and part home away from home. When you arrive and slowly make your way up the winding pebble stone driveway under blossoming purple jacarandas, it would be easy to forget you are just 90 minutes from Brisbane and to truly feel you have stepped into the French Countryside. Located on 22 acres of grounds filled with grand figs, vibrant jacarandas and groves of magnolias and gardenias, Spicers Clovelly is one of seven Spicers properties dotted across QLD and NSW. Suite, right in the main house. It was like the rooms from my childhood dreams! King bed in the centre of the room flanked by window seats and a mini library, the bathroom tiles were heated and the square double spa bath looked out over the trees on the property. Everything was airy and bright, cozy and welcoming all in one. This was our little sanctuary for the next two nights. A bonus to being located only a flight of stairs from the main area of the house including the bar and restaurant, meant a very relaxed spin on dining in style. Each morning we awoke to the sounds of birds chirping outside and the smell of fresh cooked delights wafting up the stairs. We dined alfresco on the terrace both mornings munching on fresh cooked croissants, sipping rich coffee, reading the paper while awaiting the main breakfast course. It was easy to let the morning slip away here with a vista out over the rolling hills, the lush greenery, and the shimmering pool.

After breakfast we let our inner child come out to play with rounds of croquet and boules on the lawn; the game of royals and so much fun. Plus there is nothing like a little friendly competition between partners. With warm sunny days in the Hinterland, nothing beats a swim and a sunbake at the pool. You share the area with a bikini clad French woman made of clay. She lies by the rippling water as you dive in and under. On the first day of our stay we chose to order a picnic basket and wander to the top of the property where the views look out over the lake and the forests below. Nibbling on cheeses and crackers, deli meats and quince paste with a glass of champagne as the wind blows through your hair is the perfect way to wind down and simply be. Followed by a one hour Spa treatment onsite with the talented spa staff, and you have an afternoon to remember. When the sun begins to set at Clovelly the colours of orange, pink and even purple shoot across the sky signalling it’s time to head to the bar for a glass or two of French wine. Spicers Clovelly Estate’s cellar offers 100-plus labels from the surrounding wine regions along with benchmark vineyards around the world. And with its European theme and French influence, we couldn’t go past the selection of imported French wines. The sommelier has hand-picked the best reds and whites available. Both of our nights started like this - perched at the main lounge and bar area which features genuine French antiques, dramatic black lacquer furniture, exquisite European fabrics and a stone bar, chatting to the staff and sipping on French Champagne. With the restaurant, The Long Apron, a few steps away it’s a great way to begin the evening of indulgence. The Long Apron is an award winning restaurant ran by head chef Cameron Matthews who designs the menus to compliment the regions abundance of fresh local produce. The combination of fresh local produce and classic European flavours makes for a taste sensation. Not only does The Long Apron boast exquisite French-inspired food but elegant decor highlighted by polished timber floors and stunning French doors leading to an outside courtyard. And the food! You can choose from the tasting menu or the A la carte with 2, 3 or 5 courses. We opted for 5 courses both nights and tasted some of the most flavoursome dishes you could imagine! Perhaps my favourites were roasted duck breast with pear, local honey, fennel, duck ham, grilled shallot or the Rump cap of Wagyu with aligot, confit

vegetables, horseradish cream. And for desert, the Mandarin botrytis, rosemary & oat crumble with lemon leaf ice cream was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. When looking back at this trip away, one of the things I remember and one of the things I love about all of the Spicers properties is the finer details. There is never any request to hard or too big for the friendly staff to accommodate where they can. And not only that, it’s the attention that goes into making each property unique. Something I loved about Clovelly was the French inspired images that adorn the walls of the main house and the suites; the books scattered purposefully around the rooms to create a warm, welcoming feel; the French newspapers framed by the bar; even the extensive selection of wines compliment the décor and the overall feel of the property. Although there is an air of luxury, a feel of romance and royal grandeur, there is also a cozy, homely feel to the property; the ambience induces a state of true relaxation and happiness. Perhaps you are looking for somewhere to enjoy a new type of summer escape or Christmas trip with family or friends? If so, visit Spicers. hen you walk through the big double doors at the entrance, gold plated at the foot and into the long slim hallway, it is immediately apparent you are stepping into a place with old world charm and a hint of gentry. The Inchcolm Hotel is located on the corner of Turbot St and Wickham Tce in Spring Hill, a few minutes’ walk from the heart of Brisbane city. The heritage listed property combines elegance and timelessness with the personalised service and facilities you’d expect from a boutique hotel. It’s kind of what makes it a perfect place to stop for a quick trip to the sunshine city. In 1999 the heritage listed section of the building was transformed from medical chambers to hotel suites. An extension was later added to the rear of the building to make room for additional suites, a garage and swimming pool. During a recent weekend away, The Inchcolm Hotel became our home away from home; a convenient base from which to explore Brisbane, take in the sights and the sounds, do a bit of shopping and all without

the need for a car. Some friends and I rented the 2 bedroom suite, accessed by the incredible 1930’s cage lift which still services the hotel. I’d never been in a lift like this before so the experience made me feel as though I was part of an old black and white film. Our suite was located on the second floor within the heritage listed section, and it retained many of its original features which

just added to the charm. Beautiful silky oak wall panelling and old double doors with brass fittings; all very grandeur but understated at the same time. And the view from the windows was a treat to wake to. Peering out over the bustling city below, you can look eye to eye at the buildings rising up from the ground as fresh air rushes through the suite. In deference to the history of Brisbane and Queensland, the suites are even named after significant people or places of interest including Burnett, Gympie, Ashdown, Lockyer, Kidman and Miles - another nice little touch. Although we were only here for two nights we made the most of it. We ate breakfast in the hotels restaurant, the Epicurean Brisbane. And we ventured out into the city to soak up some of the other treats. That’s right; this little weekend away was all about down time mixed with decadent gourmet experiences. Something Brisbane is very good at! On the first night, after a day spent relaxing in our old school suite it was time to don our evening wear and hit the pier. Eagle St Pier is a mecca for combining fabulous dining with spectacular views over the Storey Bridge. And we were in the mood for a steak. So a trip to Cha Cha Char, probably one of Brisbane’s best steak houses, was on the cards. You are greeted at Cha Cha Char with friendly staff who manage somehow to pause in the whirl wind of business to make you feel welcome and at home. We were swiftly shown to our table by the window looking out to the pier and had the menus explained. The head chef here, Rhett Willis, was runner up in MasterChef: The Professionals and his newly implemented menu was to die for! I’d go as far as to say the steak was some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Big call, but well deserved.

We indulged on an entrée of quail and prawns bursting with flavours of lime and chilli and various herbs. It was like summer in your mouth. Mains included a serve of the most tender Mayura Sirlion BMS 9+ age 30-36 months Grain Fed 500 + days and Wagyu Eye Fillet BMS -7 age 30-36 months Grain 400+ days. Wow, they could not be faulted! And all of this was accompanied by a great Shiraz recommended by the talented, and very helpful, staff. Everything about this restaurant draws you in. From the very city like atmosphere, a mixture of couples, businessmen and women, friends and groups – there is something here to please everyone and so all types of people come for the great food and great vibe. We left feeling very satisfied. Luckily it was only a few blocks walk back to the hotel. After a great night’s sleep and a little sleep in it was off to the next gourmet stop; pure decadence in the form of a high tea. Served in the Brisbane Arcade over two hours, High Tea at Room with Roses is certainly a treat for the senses. Everything from the charming décor, the tables look out over the glorious Brisbane Arcade on one side or the greenery of Adelaide St on the other, and the fact you are nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets just outside, makes this a unique treat and a must do during your time in Brisbane. The passionate owner Vicki calls it a sanctuary and she is spot on. The menu items are all made fresh on the premises from the very best ingredients and the staff are really there to please. Vicki says it’s the type of cooking your grandma whips up. The start of the recipe for the sponge is take 14 eggs and beat for 45 minutes! Of course the lightly scented rose buds adorning the tables adds to the beauty and very royal feel. Each High Tea serving contains ten dainty delicacies per person and is presented on a beautiful decorated porcelain High Tea stand; elegance at its best. I fell in love with the lemon curd tart and the mini chocolate heaven cake topped with chocolate ganache. Wow! Bellies full, a walk through Queen St Mall, the main mall in the city, was on the cards followed by much more of that laid back indulgence moseying from place to place and ending back at the Inchcolm. All in all a great little well deserved break in beautiful Brisbane.

Well we have had this busy schedule for a year now so we are getting used to it. We are currently in the USA which is great but the drives are so long! Yeah last year we were very new. Triple J picked up a few of our songs and because that’s such a popular radio station that definitely stepped it up for us. Since then we’ve had upgrades in venues and a lot more shows. HOW DOES PERFORMING IN AUSTRALIA DIFFER TO PERFORMING BACK HOME IN CANADA? Well I’ve found, and a lot of people say this, that Australian and Canadian culture is very similar. If you ever travel there you will notice the similarities, Australians and Canadians get on really well with each other. I also spent a lot of time traveling while I was younger and I noticed that Aussies travel the same way Canadians do; they are always the first to have a go at something, always up for a bbq or jamming in the park. And, after a performance here in Aus there is always an after party which is fantastic. We’ve come to regard Australia as a second home for us. YOUR DEBUT ALBUM DARK EYES WAS RELEASED INTERNATIONALLY EARLIER THIS YEAR HOW DID THAT FEEL? HAVE THINGS CHANGED FOR THE BAND SINCE? Yeah it’s given us a lot of momentum. Woodford Folk Festival is one of Australia’s largest and most iconic events (and one of the largest ‘folk’ festivals in the world). It is also the largest gathering of artists and musicians in Australia. The programme encompasses the depth and diversity of Australia’s cultural, artistic

and social expression with music, dance, cabaret, circus, comedy, workshops, debate, street theatre, films, forums, visual arts, an entire children's festival and many special presentations including a spectacular fire event on New Year’s Day. Woodford Folk Festival is an annual six day and night event running from December 27 through to January 1 and this year over 500 acts will perform across 28 venues to an aggregate attendance of 120,000 people. The Woodford programme reflects the broad demographic who come to dance, laugh, play and just have fun. here's not a person alive who hasn't experienced stress. For many, stress is so commonplace that it becomes a way of life. Work, family, financial obligations, and our own expectations of ourselves can place difficult demands on our time and resources - causing us to feel pressured, frustrated and trapped. While some stress can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best, constantly "running on adrenaline" can lead to eventual breakdown – physically, mentally and emotionally. So what is stress? Stress is any thing, place, situation, thought, interaction, and so on that causes the body to respond by releasing stress hormones. Whether the stress is physical or emotional, the response is the same. A gland called the adrenal cortex increases secretion of the hormone Cortisol, and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system is increased, resulting in increased adrenaline secretion from the adrenal medulla. The response of the sympathetic nervous system is commonly called the "fight-or-flight" response because the physical affects allow us to physically fight or flee, and these symptoms of stress can actually be helpful. When a physical danger occurs, the body needs the fight-or-flight response to survive. For example, if you step into the street and see a car rushing toward you, the stress response allows you to have the strength and energy needed to leap out of the way. But what happens when a normal,

The Chinese believe that you can massage the whole body and all of your systems just by massaging your feet through reflexology. For example, the toes relate to the head (perfect to massage if you have a headache) while all of your digestive system is in the middle of the arch of your foot. This style of massage is amazing if you love your feet as literally every part of your foot is rubbed and massaged. I discovered reflexology on a recent trip to Beijing. Just up near Tiananmen Square, I found the place I had been looking for; a small room, kind of resembling a doctor’s office. The receptionist at the hotel had assured me that this was where I would get the best reflexology treatment in Beijing. So with a mix of English and a smattering of pathetic Chinese, the lady at the massage clinic took pity on me and said "English okay.” Either that or she didn't like her language being

Q. I’m about to embark on this journey myself, any tips on how to get through the 60 days? A. The first two weeks is when we see the highest percentage of quitting. Get a Grip In today’s modern society where we rely on machinery and computers, it’s easy to become weak. Australia was forged on hard work and labour which built strong and resilient Aussies during the Depression and War years. These days I’d be forgiven if I said that we are ‘weaker’ than our forefathers. If we admit that, then with the tools we have and advice out there, there is simply no excuse in having a strong grip when it comes to putting in your pound of flesh around the house, in the gym or for work. Here are some great exercises that will give you forearms like Hugh Jackman and shoulders like Naomi Watts.

Routine: Complete one set of exercise A and then compound set this with exercise B with no rest. Complete 3 sets of 30 seconds each exercise (60 sec/set) with a rest of 60 seconds in between each set.

It’s just before Beer O’clock. FRUIT Eat between 4 and 11 bananas per week to maintain healthy serotonin levels. any property buyers want to invest in the resources boom. But buying houses in mining towns is among the riskiest of investments. While there is the allure of double-digit rental returns and windfall capital growth, there is also the danger of values collapsing in a mining downturn. I'm often asked if there are safer ways to tap into the real estate demand generated by the resources sector. The answer is that there are several. One that few people think of is the potential of buying where the miners themselves buy. Rather than investing where those highlypaid mining personnel work, it makes more sense to buy where they choose to set up home. There are lifestyle markets where prices have started to rise because of the number of mining people targeting those areas to establish a home base. At Hotspotting.com.au, we call them the Miners Playgrounds. Increasingly, personnel in the resources sector are working in one place and living in another. Often there's a considerable distance between the two. The growing use of fly-infly-out by the major mining companies means workers stay in temporary accommodation

while on shift and then fly home for their extended time off. Locations which have recently attracted buying demand from Queensland mining personnel include Hervey Bay, the Whitsundays, the Sunshine Coast and Cairns. These are all markets which have struggled in recent years but are now showing increasing signs of recovery. There are multiple reasons for this - and they include the buying power of well-paid mining personnel. In Western Australia, Mandurah is a popular target for workers in the iron ore industry. Once a growth market fuelled by sea change which made headlines around the nation, Mandurah declined after 2007, but more recently has made a comeback. Most suburbs in the City of Mandurah have delivered price growth in the past year ranging from moderate to strong â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with the FIFO market a major influence. Most of the markets feeling the buying power of mining personnel are also places feeling the benefits of recovery in the tourism industry. I expect these locations to see solid growth for the rest of 2013 and beyond.

orkplace safety is a major focus in the mining industry. In fact, it’s an entity of its own. Safety messages are played to staff repetitively everyday, safety officers are dedicated to workers’ health and well-being, and seminars, conferences and events are continuously being developed around workplace safety for miners. And rightly so. With risks like cave-ins, gas explosions and chemical leaks, wouldn’t you want to know how to protect yourself if something were to go wrong? But have you ever considered the online safety of staff on mine sites? The rapid pace of digital media is something that shouldn’t be overlooked, especially because mobile devices are so easily accessible by anyone in society at any time of the day. So what does online safety mean when it comes to the workplace? Business Development Leader of Ferret.com.au, Tony Haydar, explains how unsafe practices in the virtual world can be just as damaging as in the physical one, in particular, within the mining and industrial sectors. “Participating in unsafe practices online may result in confidential company information being leaked, a computer virus could shut down your systems or your business’ reputation could be tarnished by mistakes made on social media,” Tony said. “If your employees operate machinery remotely via a computer and they misuse the system, it could lead to a loss of productivity and wasted resources to repair it. Employees could also be at risk of losing their job if they use the internet or social media inappropriately,” he said. Planking is one social media fad that became a scary reality for many Australians after planking posts went viral. Industrial workers were the topic of planking controversy, as well as celebrities and there was even a death suspected to be caused by the craze. >>

Tony explains why it’s important for the mining and manufacturing industries to train and educate staff on how to utilise safe practices online to avoid accidents or loss of productivity. “Staff can be educated by incorporating training into the culture of the organisation,” he said. “Safety training is a key aspect of any mining business and this practice needs to be broadened to incorporate new technologies.” Tony suggests implementing internal policies, rules and regulations for employees to follow when online. “Policies could include how to represent the company online or information on dealing with suspicious emails,” he said. “Employees can also attend training days, information sessions or industry trade shows to learn more and it’s a good idea for employees to read industry magazines or online publications to keep up to date on current online safety practices, viruses and advice.” The use of online business directories like Ferret. com.au is a safe way to purchase products online. Q. CAN FIFO EMPLOYEES CLAIM A TAX DEDUCTION FOR FLIGHTS TO AND FROM THEIR PLACE OF WORK? HOW ABOUT AIRPORT CAR PARKING OR TAXI FARES? KPMG: Although we would all like to claim as many deductions in our tax returns as possible, there are some limitations to what can be claimed. While work related expenses are deductible, you have to be working to claim them. As such, the general rule is that travel from home to work (whether it’s through driving or flying) is not deductible. Similarly, car parking or taxi fares to an airport are also not deductible. However, depending on your circumstances, there may be a possibility to deduct expenses such as flights, petrol and other incidental travel costs. To claim the deduction, ALL FOUR of the following factors must be met: • You are required to live away from home for work purposes, in a remote area where the living conditions are quite poor (due to the remoteness and temporary nature of a site); • Your family usually does not stay with you at the worksite and there is a requirement for you to leave the site when you are rostered off; • You take your personal belongings with you while you are FIFO (as the accommodation on site is not fixed); AND • The site is set up for a maximum period of one year. Q. DO ZONE TAX REBATES (NOW CALLED OFFSETS) STILL APPLY WHEN WORKING REMOTELY IN AUSTRALIA? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY AND WHERE DO THEY APPLY? KPMG: Yes, there is an offset available for employees who work and live in a remote area within Australia. To qualify for the zone tax offset, an employee must have lived/ worked in an eligible remote area (not necessarily for a continuous period) for: • 183 days or more during the current tax year; OR • 183 days or more in total during the current and previous tax years (but less than 183 days in the current year and less than 183 days in the previous tax year) and not claimed a zone tax offset in the previous year's tax return. Q. CAN MINING, OIL AND GAS EMPLOYEES CLAIM A TAX DEDUCTION FOR PARTICULAR EXPENSES SUCH AS WATCHES/PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES? KPMG: Since no-one wants to pay more tax than they need to, there are a number of specific deductions for mining site employees. Make sure that records/receipts of all work-related expenses are kept as evidence of deductions claimed in your tax return. In practice, common expenses you claim can include protective clothing, laundry expenses, tools and equipment, telephone expenses and membership

subscriptions (unfortunately, this does not mean Foxtel or personal magazine subscriptions to keep you occupied while working remotely!) Q. WHAT’S THE TAX BENEFIT TO RESOURCES FAMILIES OF BOOSTING THEIR PERSONAL SUPER CONTRIBUTIONS? KPMG: Superannuation is important for retirement and there are a number of steps that can be taken to maximise super contributions as well as take advantage of tax concessions. Superannuation contributions are generally taxed at a rate of 15 per cent within the super fund, so there may be tax advantages in increasing your contributions (through salary sacrificing) as this rate is generally lower than tax on salary earned, which is taxed at marginal tax rates. For example, if the employee's marginal rate of tax is 32.5 per cent (plus Medicare levy of 1.5 per cent) and the contribution rate is 15 per cent, there is a tax saving of 19 per cent on the contribution made. However, note that individuals earning income of more than $300,000 will have their contribution's tax rate increased from 15 per cent to 30 per cent. Those nearing retirement age might be thinking: "Excellent, I’ll put most of my pay into superannuation!" Unfortunately, this cannot be done without tax implications. It is important when contributing additional payments into superannuation to be mindful of caps, as the treatment of excess contributions will effectively remove the tax saving opportunities for you. Effective 1 July 2013, the compulsory employer contribution rate has increased from 9 per cent to 9.25 per cent (in accordance with the federal government’s initiative to increase employer

superannuation contributions to 12 per cent by the year 2020). Q. ARE THERE OTHER WAYS FOR MINING FAMILIES TO ENSURE THEY DON’T PAY MORE TAX THAN NECESSARY (E.G. INVESTMENT PROPERTIES, MANAGED FUNDS)? KPMG: Families could consider borrowing to invest in rental properties, managed funds or the share market to take advantage of what is called negative gearing (meaning, the outgoings in managing investments is greater than the income from investments and this loss is offset by wages). Typically, interest on borrowings is tax deductible along with any costs associated in managing investments. However, the negative gearing benefit needs to be weighed up with the negative cash flow that may arise. Remember if it’s negatively geared it’s not necessarily making you money! Q. SHOULD EMPLOYEES IN MINING AND RESOURCES GET THEIR TAX DONE BY AN ACCOUNTANT WITH SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY? KPMG: There is value in using a tax advisor who not only has knowledge of the mining industry, but also has experience in dealing with individuals who are FIFO (or DIDO) or expatriates. Skilled advisors can calculate your income appropriately and ensure tax deductions or offsets are maximised. Specialist advisors can provide an insight to what other employees or employers are facing (as they usually have a number of clients with similar issues) and have experience in solving problems that may be common in the industry.

Save real money with a decent deposit I

t feels great to be heading into the warmer months and real estate agents around the country are enjoying the spring selling season – typically the busiest part of their year. Buyers are out in force encouraged by very low interest rates. But having a decent deposit can be the key money saver when you’re buying bricks and mortar. The amount you can borrow as a percentage of your home’s value is known as the ‘loan to valuation ratio’ or LVR. An LVR of 80%, meaning you have a 20% deposit, tends to be the benchmark for buying property though you can take out a mortgage with far less. Assuming you meet a lender’s basic criteria like having a regular income that’s sufficient for you to meet repayments, some lenders will happily provide loans for 90% – even 95%, of a property’s value. It means you could take out a loan for a home worth $500,000 with a down payment of as little as $25,000. This may be a very tempting strategy

especially as buying property also involves substantial upfront costs like stamp duty, prepurchase inspections and legal fees, which all eat into personal savings. However having the biggest possible deposit makes good financial sense. For starters, if you borrow 80% or more of a property’s value, your lender will ask you to pay lenders mortgage insurance (LMI). This is a one-off cost organised by your lender, and it’s a charge worth avoiding. LMI protects the lender, not you – the borrower, if you cannot keep up the loan repayments. In the event of the lender repossessing your home and selling it, LMI covers the lender if the sale price is below the outstanding loan balance. The greater worry is that LMI premiums can be extremely high. As a guide, buying that $500,000 property I mentioned earlier with a deposit of just $25,000 would result in an LMI premium of about $17,480. It you don’t have the cash on hand, you may

be able to capitalise LMI, meaning it’s added to the loan value and repaid over time. In the example noted above, this would mean paying back an extra $134 each month on top of your regular repayments. That sort of extra payment is like a massive hike in interest rates. Yet plenty of home buyers wear this cost because they don’t have a sizeable deposit. There are other benefits to having a reasonable down payment. You won’t need to borrow as much so your repayments will be lower and any future increases in interest rates will have less of an impact on your personal cash flow. I appreciate that for first home buyers especially it can be challenging to save a decent deposit. Nevertheless if you can manage it, you’ll be financially better off from day one.
