Welcome to Mackay Airport Magazine

elcome to another edition of Mackay Airport Magazine. It’s been a busy couple of months here at Mackay Airport and I am sure you will notice some changes as you pass through the terminal. Our bright new furniture is now in place to complete our recent $1M revamp and from the comments we’ve received we know you are as happy with the new look and feel of the terminal as we are. There is new seating in the waiting areas and new tables and chairs in the food and beverage areas. The other elements undertaken as part of the revamp included retiling within the Departure Lounge and Arrivals area for a sleek and streamlined look. Vibrant new carpet has been installed in the check in area. The aim of the project was to connect the various areas within the terminal through common styling themes and continuity of finishes. We are proud to have achieved this and to offer you this bright, colourful and modern look that offers new levels of comfort and ambience for airport users. We will continue to improve Mackay Airport to ensure our facilities meet the needs of our customers, whether you are travelling for “WORKDAYS or HOLIDAYS”. One of the next steps we plan to undertake is the creation of a new outdoor seating area at the northern end of the Departure Lounge, providing an outdoor smoking zone beyond the security screening point. We are also exploring options for the refurbishment of our landside amenities areas. Did you get the opportunity to go along to the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival? It was a fantastic round of events with the Sunday Race Day proving enormously popular and loads of fun. If you missed out make sure you get in early next year to be part of this lively celebration of our fabulous Mackay lifestyle. Mackay Airport is proud to be the naming rights sponsor of the Beach Horse Racing Festival which draws visitors to our city from all around Australia and is a great boost to the region’s tourism industry. We look forward to seeing you there next year and if you are a local be sure to let your friends and family know about it and tell them how easy it is to get to Mackay for these big events, with direct links from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. o first off, Your EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing, and specifically your song ‘Riptide’ has become a tremendous hit. How did it feel when the song started topping the charts? Did you expect this sort of success? No I didn’t at all. I had a good feeling about the songs as I was writing them. They were catchy but I wasn’t expecting this much success. But I guess you just put something out into the universe with the hope that other people will like it.

know me, music is universal. A good melody connects to everyone on different levels. This month you’ll be on the road with your own ‘Riptide’ tour which is soon to be sold out. What can fans expect from the tour? Well this tour is me and also my band. I’ve got a couple of new songs that I’m going to perform which aren’t on the EP so no one will have heard those yet. And, of course there will be all the songs from my EP. My band and I have been working a lot together lately so we are definitely getting more comfortable performing which should make a difference in this tour.

You’ve had a hectic couple of months, performing across the US and Canada as well as Australia, do you get a different reaction from the crowd overseas then you do at home in Australia? Well of course there is a lot more awareness here but it’s also nice to perform to a crowd who doesn’t know you. It’s kind of cool to be anonymous. The performance feels fresher. Not so much pressure! Also even though they didn’t

I can imagine you’ve got a busy year ahead of you, what else have you got planned? Can we expect new releases from Vance Joy any time soon? Well an album is definitely on the cards; hopefully I will be releasing a new album sometime next year. I’ve been working a lot on writing new material and also rehearsing with the band. That’s probably the two main things on the agenda. n

You performed at Splendor this year and I heard you packed out the GW Mckellen stage on the Saturday. What was that experience like? It was really cool, so many people turned up! I normally perform to a crowd of around 300 people so splendor was definitely a step up. The whole tent was full of people and I was standing back stage watching the performances before me, getting more and more nervous. It was hectic.

HE Gold Coast’s biggest event, the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600, returns to the streets of Surfers Paradise this October and a crowd of up to 180,000 people are expected to invade the Gold Coast for three days of heart pumping V8 Supercars racing on one of the most exciting – and toughest – street circuits in Australia. And the off-track action will be just as hot as the on-track action, with the biggest entertainment program in the event’s history lighting up the Gold Coast for the entire month of October. The major international artists include US rap-rock outfit Gym Class Heroes, featuring Travie McCoy. Gym Class Heroes will be supported at the Friday night concert by Australia’s own Spiderbait, Havana Brown and Bomb’s Away. Aria Award winning electro pop duo The Presets headline the Saturday night concert, supported by Aussie rock greats Grinspoon, Gold Coast international success story The Stafford Brothers and Gold Coast-born DJ Brooke Evers. Aside from the beats, on Saturday October 19, V8 Supercars will join forces with the Australian Karting Association to

Your editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a bit of a chat with last year’s winner V8 Driver WILL DAVISON about cars, life and of course the Gold Coast AMORALL 600. Q. Tell me a bit about yourself and how you got into the V8’s? I come from a rich family history of motor sport and I suppose you could say I'm a third generation race driver. It started with my grandfather who won the Australian Grand Prix four times, my dad and a few of his brothers raced through the 70’s and 80’s with great success. I was brought up around the race track and so I developed a great passion for it. I always wanted to do it. My brother Alex is also a V8’s driver and we helped each other a lot through our careers. Q. You have a pretty impressive resume, what has been your biggest accomplishment so far?

I spent a bit of time racing Formula Ones in Europe which was tough but a huge highlight for me. It’s such a buzz being in such fast cars. In terms of V8’s though, to become a pro driver, win the Bathurst 1000 in 2009, being awarded the Barry Sheen medal, and then winning the Clipsal 500 and Gold Coast 600 was a huge achievement. In the V8’s it’s always a rocky road, but it’s a process, you just want to get your next drive, you’re kept on your toes and I love every minute of it. Q. After winning the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 last year, is there added pressure this year? There is pressure every year and at every event but all for different reasons. The 600 is at a crucial time of the year, you have a good picture of where you sit and it’s the third endurance race of the series. It’s a gruelling race and its easy to make a mistake. But it’s a great race and it really sets you up if you’re in the top few. It’s really a dog fight, the most physical of all the races and everyone wants to go out for glory. There are no room for errors.

Q. It’s a pretty big event, not only is there the race but days and nights filled with entertainment, what can people expect to see and hear this year? The event has everything! It’s a great day out with entertainment for everyone. I’m a race man at heart, I want to be sitting in the stands with the fans watching the incredible drivers, the carnage; it’s awesome! And I want to be at the concerts enjoying the music and the atmosphere, but I don’t get to. I’m out on the track. It’s one of those events where you can get up close and personal with the crowds; it’s so much fun for everyone. Q. There is the constant Ford vs. Holden debate in Australia, what do you have to say on the matter being part of the Ford Racing Team? This is what the V8’s is all about. It’s part of Australian culture and history the Ford vs. Holden and I'm still constantly blown away by the passion of the fans when it comes to the cars. There are die hard supporters on both sides, it’s amazing how much that blue oval means to them or that red lion. As a Ford driver I feel the weight of their passion and you want to win for the fans as much as yourself and your team. It means a lot to them. It can be hard as a driver with the comments and pressure but you learn to use that as a driving force and as energy. I love a healthy fight! I love getting booed by the Holden fans, cheered by the Ford fans; it’s what it’s all about! Q. Tell be about the person we don’t see out on the track, what do you like to do for fun? I'm an adrenaline junkie at heart. I love taking the dirt bike out, going for a cycle, it’s like mental therapy. But on the flip side I also like to just shut down and be a bit of a softie. The simple things like hanging out with family, walking my dog or playing a hit of golf are just as fun for me. n

magine Peter Jackson’s epic film The Lord of The Rings; The Two Towers on the big screen with Academy Award winner Howard Shore’s score performed live by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Well, fans will need imagine no more when, under the baton of conductor Justin Freer, with incredible soloist Kaitlyn Lusk and the Brisbane Birralee Voices directed by Julie Christiansen, and Resonance of Birralee directed by Paul Holley, this masterpiece will come alive in the natural open amphitheater of the Brisbane Riverstage, under the stars on an October evening…. Queensland Symphony Orchestra is bringing the sights and certainly the sounds of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to life, so we had a chat with some of the people making it happen.

the music is properly synchronized to the film. Throw in nearly 250 players on stage and it becomes a wonderful challenge to keep everyone together while always striving to create the highest possible quality of musicality. The unique experience of watching the film with live musicians performing the score helps the movie goer to truly realise how important music is to film. The music helps to tell the story on screen; it helps us to dive into the characters and their emotions. This is a wonderful way to experience both the traditional classical concert setting while enjoying a visual art form.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS CONCERT? When great music is married to a great film, it is magical. The opportunity to experience one of the great film scores in our literature live in concert, screened with the entire film, should be embraced by us all. KAITLYN, TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR? At the age of 14, I made a demo tape in an effort to attend the music high school Interlochen. My dad is a musician, trombone professor at Penn State for over 25 years and studied at Eastman School of Music, as well as playing trombone with the Chicago Symphony and on Broadway. He had some old colleagues who he also sent the demo to, trying to gauge their opinions on my voice and avenues I might want to take to study etc. Next thing you know my life just took off! In sum, I have performed with over 50 different orchestras, 20 different conductors, been a part of recording two albums, and sung live in over 500 performances. All within the last 9.5 years!

JUSTIN, WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS CONCERT? As conductor it is my job first and foremost to realise as closely as possible the vision of composer Howard Shore for Peter Jackson's film.

WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS CONCERT? I am the featured soloist. In the original movies they had over 15 different vocalists perform each of the solos and songs. When they transitioned to the live performances, they needed someone with a voice that could sing a little bit of everything! It is quite the vocal challenge!

CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT THE PRODUCTION AND WHAT THE AUDIENCE CAN EXPECT? The Lord of the Rings Live in Concert is one of the most challenging conducting endeavors I have yet experienced. There are so many items that the conductor must maintain complete control of in order to make sure

Travelling with kids – here’s the secret

very parent has some interesting stories of traveling with children. Many people see travelling with their kids as stressful before they even board the flight, but if you go in with that attitude how can you have a positive and healthy mindset - or a positive trip? Be honest with yourself knowing that having kids in tow will certainly be more challenging than travelling alone, or with other adults. When packing your bags think about what type of things you will need on the plane to entertain them - books, a charged up iPad with a few of their favourite shows, and some snacks. It doesn't matter where you sit in the plane, honestly children will not know the difference of their noise levels. Sometimes it's harder sitting up the front knowing people pay top dollar for peace! You can never guarantee the noise level with children, especially little ones. My husband often brings spare ear plugs along and hands them out to people sitting near us as a little consolation. The simplest tips I can recommend for super small bubs is make sure you have an extra pillow if you are breast feeding, and if you bottle feed

When it's sleep time, use your blankets and build a cubby house over them so it shuts out all lights and they know it's lights out time. Let them know the difference between day and night. For active children give them time to walk up and down the aisles, there are certainly times for stimulation and other quiet times as well. They will need to release their energy at some point. Be patient and endearing, and whilst it seems you may be on that flight forever, you wont be! Remind yourself that every minute you are closer to reaching your destination. Find a flight attendant you like and build a relationship with them. Also say yes to anyone willing to cuddle or entertain your children if it's your kids' awake time! Above all, try to relax yourself, try to sleep when your kids do. Know that they are children, they're not understanding of time differences or how long they are on that plane. Don't be nervous. Be organised and ready for anything and try to have fun and let the journey of flying be fun, not fiery! n

Peace and quiet, boats, brews, adventure, wildlife – what more could you want from a weekend away? Be merry on the ferry: It was almost a bad start to a great trip after underestimating the distance between Brisbane and River Heads which is where we were to board the barge to Fraser Island. What we thought was a 3.5 hour trip was more like 4.5 hours but well worth every minute of the drive up the picturesque Bruce Highway. After bolting through the doors at the Kingfisher Bay Resort Mainland Terminal at 12.29 thinking we had missed the 12.30 ferry for sure, the lovely staff held the boat and off we went on a leisurely cruise across to Fraser Island, our home for the next 3 days. Welcome to Kingfisher Bay Resort: The welcome wagon (or train) was awaiting our arrival so we jumped on board and took the quick ride to the resorts reception to complete the check-in. Already we were feeling wowed. The natural beauty of the island was breathtaking; rustic and charming. Our room overlooked the beach and the wetlands; you couldn’t wake up to a more serene view then this! Hues of green and brown on a backdrop of pale blue sky, a pond the shape of Australia reflecting back the trunks of trees, lily pads scattered across the water with rays of

golden sun shining through the branches. Nothing but nature as far as the eye could see. Back over in the main resort complex was the pool and spa, the perfect spot to relax after a day of driving, sip on a few brews and watch life float on by. It seemed to me the moment you stepped off that barge you slipped into island life. Everyone was relaxed here. Fraser Island takes you out of the rat race, away from work sites, no dust, drills, noise – just the chirping of birds, whistle of the wind through the trees, and the only one checking up on you is a curious lizard. It was going to be a great weekend! Seabelle dinner and drinks: Later that night and after sprucing up a bit we wandered over to the main resort complex once more for something a smidge fancy. Dinner tonight was a three course extravaganza of flavours in the awardwinning Seabelle a la carte restaurant. The menu was designed to suit the Queensland climate and relies on the wonderful supply of fresh, high quality foods and the distinctive flavours of the Australian bush. A delicious dinner and a few drinks later we were spread out in our (very) comfy beds

ready for a good night’s sleep. Ride the Segway: Have you ever been on a Segway? Do you know what one is? Well if you have seen Mall Cops then you will be familiar with this 2 wheeled, self-balancing, battery-powered, electric contraption. And on Fraser Island, you can jump on the back of one of these things and zoom around in the sand. So that’s how we started our Saturday morning – racing back and forth along the main beach in synchronised Segway style! A bumpy ride, a cold dip and a bite to eat: Buzzing from the Segway ride it was on to the next activity for the day. And if you like a bit of adventure in your life then a 4WD on Fraser is a must. We rented a car from Aussie Trax and got ready for an action packed Saturday. After watching the safety dvd and going through the details we were right to head off. And it was about 3 minutes into the trip we realised why the young man who rented us the car said “you’ll need to get a bit aggressive on the road out”. It was straight into the soft lumpy sand and a rollercoaster of hills, turns and bumps – it was AWESOME!

We felt like Ace Ventura in When Nature Calls, bumping around in the front seats. With only a few hours to spend out in the wilderness we decided to head straight for Lake Mckenzie, a 'perched' lake, formed by water accumulating on top of a thin layer of decaying twigs and leaves. Possibly one of the most beautiful spots on the island, Lake Mckenzie is the sort of place that makes you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. The water is ice cold but super refreshing and clear as crystal. The mineral sand is pure white and feels great on the soles of your feet as you wade in. After what seemed like hours of lazing around under the sun it was back in the beast and back on the tracks for a whizz around to the beach where a picnic lunch awaited. One of the beauty’s about starting the day at Kingfisher Bay Resort is the option of a fully packed picnic lunch ready to go when you head off in the morning. And with enough food to feed us for a week, we were in gourmet picnic heaven. Salads, breads, meats, fruit, cakes and biscuits, juice, water, wine – sitting in the sand watching the world roll by is the way to go. You might even like to cast a line while you eat and simply enjoy the serenity. Pure hot bliss: After bumping around in the 4WD all morning a hot stone massage was exactly what I needed that afternoon. And I'm going to go as far as to say this was the best hot stone massage I had ever experienced! A quiet room with artists

stopped for a look. Budding photographers dotted the beach waiting to capture the lucky spot. For me there was nothing more peaceful then sitting in the soft sand sipping champagne and just listening to the waves roll into shore. Totally blissful!

Cheers to the weekend: There is no other way to end a day at Fraser Island I think then to grab a bottle of champas or a bucket of beers and head to the beach near The Jetty Hut; arguably the best place on the Island to watch the sun slink below the mainland. It was such a beautiful sight even the pelicans

Wha wha whales!!! Sunday morning was an early one as we prepared for our whale watching expedition with Harvey Bay Whale Watch on the Quick Cat II. After a buffet breakfast, at around 7.30am we all jumped on board ready to spot some of the oceans most magnificent creatures. The first promise of whales, a salty spray on the horizon, had everyone sitting up a little straighter. As the boat got closer to the splashing and the breaching began, passengers flung from their seats, grasped the rails and stood in awe, mouths open at the sight in front. The first pod of the day was 2 adults playing in the sea and their sheer size was incredible! They got so close to the boat if you were to reach out (and had arms a few meters long) you could touch them! We saw about 15 whales that morning and 9.5 of them up close. The half was a gorgeous baby whale flinging himself through the air over and over again! Amazing. Time to say goodbye: As they say, all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately it was time to pack our bags and head back to the mainland. The only downfall of the trip– no infamous dingoes in sight! n

ike spent 17 years in various roles in the hi-tech industry, stretching back to the dark ages when they still had someone referred to in hushed tones as The Computer Operator who, dressed in a white lab coat, loaded arm-length columns of punched cards into a steam-driven megamachine. Through titles such as 'programmer' and 'analyst' to systems design, sales, marketing, and eventually setting up his own company with a couple of friends, he successfully arrived at an early mid-life crisis in 1993 and took off on an Everest expedition where he discovered the mysticism of the Himalaya. He grew his hair too long, acquired an earring and sampled some of the local vegetation, then one fateful night in Kathmandu someone took advantage of his altered state and sold him a motorcycle. Having never even sat on a motorcycle before at the tender age of 37, the rest, as they say, is history. Denise (Dyer) also spent many years in the Corporate World.

With a master’s degree in psychology she moved quickly up the Human Resources ladder to become the youngest-ever board member for NCR (NZ) and then HR Director for several multinationals. She made a career change to the philanthropic world in becoming CEO for The Humour Foundation. So you have just co-authored a new book… Your first! What’s it about? Using Rugby League as a tool, the main part of writing the book from my angle is to encourage young kids to read again, especially boys. I know myself as a young kid in Mt Isa, the library wasn’t the coolest place to hang out, and the stuff I liked reading was about rugby league so I hope the book will be a tool to get the boys (and girls) reading again. The book draws a lot of my knowledge and experiences of growing up in Regional Qld. Talking about issues like homesickness and moving away to the city. I don’t really think there’s a right time to start writing, as I get older I have to start looking outside the square. Talking to ex-players, they say that at the time you’re playing you think your whole world is Rugby League but when you retire it really was a small part of your life and there’s a big wide world out there. What do you think you will do now that you have left the game? Im pretty open minded with what I want to do outside of footy, I really enjoy working with kids in an ambassador role, encouraging them to stay in school and would like to continue with a media career. Do you find there’s a lot of pressure to be a good role model? I think nowadays there is, I’ve been fortunate enough to play professionally for 15-16 years, I started first year out of high school and I’m 33 now so to come through and see some of the stuff the players did in the past compared to now. The game is also very heavily scrutinised through the media and with social media and everyone having iphones with cameras you have to be so careful, it’s almost like everyone is now part of the media. Do you think your upbringing has grounded you? Oh I definitely think so, with Mum and Dad around, my father was very hard but fair and he had a motto “work before play” after school so the old man was really strict and growing up in Mt Isa it’s pretty isolated so we had to work hard for what we had and we learned to appreciate what he had. I remember I got my very first pair of Nike boots at the age of 15 which I thought was absolutely gold! And then getting an endorsement with Adidas at 25 was a big thing. Now, the guys playing first grade, first year kind of expect it, where we had to work our butts off for it. A lot of our readers deal with traveling and separation from their partners and families, how have you and Kristy handled this over the years? At the moment, it is what it is and it’s not easy. My wife is very supportive and once it’s all done and dusted with Rugby League I think she deserves a holiday and the plan is to go overseas for a month without the children, more of a thank you to her for everything she’s had to put up with. Being a professional sportsman is very self-centered and she has to cook, look after my diets and deal with my injuries, bad games and absences. It can be quite hard but we’ve been together now since I was 20 so she understands it doesn’t last forever.

So if football didn’t take off for you, what do you think you would be doing? I remember having a conversation with my old man when I was in grade 10 and I thought I’d finish school at 15 and work in the mines but he was convinced I needed to finish year 12. I didn’t think there was a life out of Mt Isa, we used to go to our Aunty in Townsville for holidays, I didn’t taste salt water until I was 11! My upbringing was very simple and footy was the big thing. I would have probably ended up being a station hand or a ringer, something involving country life out on a station. What’s your best memory of growing up in Mt Isa? The taste of the sulphur fumes! Haha, no, I’d have to say the sight of the massive mine on the edge of town. Some say it’s in the middle of town but it’s not, we used to have this little house with a verandah and the sun would set behind it. For most kids growing up there sport was the big focus but as you get older people tend to move on so a lot of my friends are now in Townsville, but I love going back as I’m an ambassador for RACQ rescue chopper and we hold a dinner yearly to raise money to keep them flying and give back to the community. I actually got the silhouette of the mine tattooed on my right foot about 3 years ago so I always remember where I came from as it’s played such a big role in my life.

The Rescue Chopper:

tarting out as a small organisation in 2007, the RACQ North Queensland Helicopter Service has been gaining momentum over the past few years. The organisation is a non-profit charity established in Mount Isa. It aims to provide a community rescue helicopter service to people in rural areas in need of urgent assistance. Former rugby league footballer Scott Prince has been a strong advocate for the Rescue Service. Having grown up in Mount Isa, Prince understands the importance of having a reliable rescue service. “In such an isolated area as Mount Isa, when there was an accident a helicopter had to be dispatched from Townsville and that could take up to four hours to get there. That wasted time could be the difference in saving lives” said Prince. “I also have many friends and family members living in that area so it’s an issue close to my heart.” Currently unfunded by the Queensland Government, the NQ Helicopter Rescue Service relies heavily on help from supporters, hosting many events to generate funds. One such event is the annual Sportsman’s Dinner. This event has been

growing over the past few years with tickets selling out every year. Last year’s event raised a staggering $70,000. Prince recently saw the benefits of the helicopter service first hand, when someone close to him needed help. “My best mate attended the sportsman’s dinner with me one year; his dad worked in the mines near Mount Isa so it was something he was keen to support. He wanted to purchase one of the sporting memorabilia which cost $200. My mate didn’t have the money for it so he called his father to ask for the money since it was going to such an important cause. His dad told him ‘if you want it, you buy it; I don’t care what the money is for!’ A few months after the dinner his dad suddenly developed strong chest pains while working, luckily they called the very same chopper that his son wanted to fund and it was there within an hour, brought him to safety and took very good care of him. f you want to cut the fat, work off the after work beers and get yourself some abs then a simple at home boxing circuit can work wonders and have you on your way to a Hugh Jackman 6 pack in no time.

Warm up Skip for 2 minutes – If you don’t have a skipping rope (go buy one!) or just imagine you have one in your hands and make the full actions as if you are skipping with a rope– your body will receive the same benefits.

Shadow box with a 1 jab & cross Throw your jab then your cross, pause, then repeat the movement. Do this for 2 minutes making sure you are keeping your core tight and putting power into the punches. But don’t overextend your arms or you will do damage to your shoulders. Make sure once you throw your jab you bring your fist straight back to just below your chin and do the same with your cross.

2 Star jumps Begin in a relaxed stance with your feet together and your arms by your side. To begin the move, jump your legs wide apart while at the same time bringing your arms touching over your head and return to your starting position. Repeat without stopping for 1 minute. Push yourself – move as quick as you can and keep your arms straight touching your hands together overhead.

3 Shadow box with uppercuts Get your stance, engage your core and stand strong, then use your left hand to throw an uppercut, then the right hand. Pause and reset then repeat. Continue for 2 minutes. Remember boxing is all about technique the better your technique the better your workout.

4 Push-ups Lie flat on the floor with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Tuck your toes so they are under your feet. Raise your body up off the floor by pushing your body up, extending your arms and keeping your body straight. Return to the start touching your chest to the ground briefly then push straight back up again. Repeat for 1 minute.

6 Squats

Shadow box 5 with hooks

Stand up straight chest up, shoulders back. Place your feet shoulder-width apart or slightly wider. Your hips should be stacked over your knees and your knees over your ankles. Extend your arms straight out in front of you so they are parallel to the ground, palms facing down, keep your head facing forward and look straight ahead. Take your hips back while you bend your knees; imagine you are sitting in a chair. Remember your knees should not extend past your toes. Press your weight back into your heels and push through your heels to bring yourself back to your starting position, standing upright. Squeeze your butt and legs throughout the movement and go deep. Feel the burn. Do this for 2 minutes, no rest.

Get your stance, engage your core and stand strong. Left hand throws a hook which is a punch at 45 degree angle, and then your right hand throws a hook. Pause reset. Go again. Continue for 2 minutes.

7 Crunch Start lying flat on your back with your knees up and your hands behind your head. Use your abdominals to crunch up. Don’t pull on your head or neck as you lift up. Do this for 2 minutes.

Boxing Circuit Intensity Beginners Level – Shadow box with no dumbbells, push-ups and plank can be done on your knees Intermediate Level – Shadow box with dumbbells, push-ups and plank on toes -complete the boxing circuit twice.

8 Plank Lie face down on floor. Make a triangle by placing your palms on the floor and resting on your forearms. Make sure your elbows are under your shoulders. Push off the floor rising up onto your toes keeping your back flat and in a straight line from head to heels. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent rear end from sticking up in the air or sagging in the middle. Hold for 1 minute.

Advanced Level – Shadow box using heavier dumbbells, push-ups and plank on your toes and bring one foot off the ground (alternate feet), add dumbbell to your squat and increase the time completing each activity. Complete the boxing circuit three times. Tip – record how many star jumps, push ups and squats you do in the allocated time and try to beat your number in your next round of the boxing circuit or next training session. It’s about setting and monitoring healthy eating, physical activity, recording body weight, recording foods eaten and logging exercise that provides objective feedback on how well you are changing your habits. Keep it real and keep honest. 4. Support Groups Studies document the benefits of encouragement by others. Being part of a group, whether an exercise group, a formal support group or even a virtual group help you share triumphs, bemoan setbacks and strategies solutions.

Asparagus and poached eggs 1 meal 2 free-range or organic eggs 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1 slice spelt or multigrain bread 5 pieces asparagus, ends trimmed 1â &#x201E;2 lemon for squeezing Handful of rocket (arugula) or watercress leaves, washed and dried 1 tablespoon shaved parmesan cheese Pinch of Celtic sea salt Cracked black pepper Place a saucepan with a steamer over medium heat and half fill with boiling water. This is to cook the asparagus while your eggs are poaching. Break the eggs into a cup to ensure the yolks are intact. Fill a deep-sided saucepan with at least 10 cm (4 in) of simmering water. Add the vinegar to the water. Stir the water with a spoon, creating a small whirlpool. Drop the eggs one at a time into the centre of the whirlpool. The water will settle and the eggs should form an oval. While

the eggs are cooking, chargrill or toast the bread. Place the asparagus in the steamer for 90 seconds. Remove pan from heat and squeeze lemon juice on top of asparagus. Place toast on a plate and arrange the watercress or rocket (arugula) leaves and asparagus on top. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and drain well. Place the eggs on the toast and asparagus, sprinkle with the parmesan shavings and season with Celtic salt and cracked black pepper. Low risk super puts a better retirement at risk I

’m a firm believer that superannuation has a lot going for it. Without super many Australians would end up facing a very thrifty retirement, and because we can’t normally access our super until preservation age – between 55 and 60 depending on when you were born, our nest egg benefits from healthy long term returns. Just what sort of returns your fund will achieve depends on the investment option you select for your super. According to research group SuperRatings, last year was a bumper one for super with balanced funds delivering returns of around 11.7% for the 2012 calendar year. The key driver was returns of 17.9% for Australian shares and 13.6% for international shares. Many people are surprised to learn that ‘balanced’ funds have a sizeable proportion – usually around 60% to 70% of the fund’s money invested in share markets. It’s a strategy that makes a lot of sense though.

Quality shares grow in value over time to provide capital gains that add to ongoing dividend income. Both help to grow your super. The downside is that equity markets move in cycles, and the value of your super can take a hit at times when shares are experiencing dips. But over the long run the upswings will more than make up for the downturns. This is an important issue to consider when it comes to choosing how your super is invested. A recent industry survey found that one in two young workers would choose a ‘low risk’ option. During the height of the financial crisis when stock markets tanked, many people did just that – shifting their nest egg from balanced or growth options to low risk choices. On the face of it, choosing a low risk strategy for your super can seem like a good idea. After all, none of us want to jeopardise

our retirement nest egg. That catch is that low risk equals low returns. By ticking the low risk box on your fund’s menu of options you face the prospect that your super may not earn sufficient returns to outpace inflation. It all highlights the need to understand how your super is invested – and whether it’s the best choice for your life stage. If you are in, or near, retirement switching at least part of your nest egg to low risk investments can be a sensible strategy and your financial adviser can help you with this decision. For the rest of us, choosing a balanced, growth or high growth strategy will see your fund’s value move around from year to year. Over time however you should reap the rewards of higher returns - and that means more money to live on in retirement.

The high FIFO divorce rate is a myth, but the challenges are a reality when families separate

here is a common misconception that the divorce rate among fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers is higher than the rest of the population. Although one study found that the rate of divorce after starting work in WA mining was 7 per cent for FIFO workers (as compared to 5 per cent of workers living in the city) this is still much less than the 30 per cent that's often suggested in the media. A 2009 study by Lindsay Greer at CQ University showed the divorce and separation

rate at 11.26 per cent across all industries, and actually lower in mining at 11.15 per cent. This tells me two things. Firstly, statistics can tell you anything you want to hear if you set the parameters of the question the 'right' way. But there are also clear indications that divorce is not the cancer of the resources industry that some headline-makers want us to believe. MEDIATION FIFO families might be no different in a statistical sense, but they certainly have different needs and challenges and family lawyers need to be sensitive to these. While mediation is compulsory for almost all divorces involving children there is mediation and then there is mediation! We encourage FIFO families to utilise a reputable mediation and counselling service to deal with the change. A good family lawyer will encourage this process and feed outcomes back into the legal arrangements being agreed.

COURTS The court is also increasingly sensitive to the FIFO lifestyle. They are used to dealing with various rosters and how FIFO work operates generally. An experienced family lawyer will always ask you for a copy of your roster and discuss with you the options available to assist your family to restructure after a separation. t's not a competition. We're BOTH exhausted! It's fair to say that until I visited a mine site, it was hard to truly understand what an average day was like for my husband. Once I'd made the trip - and in the space of just 24 hours - I understood about the isolation, the long days, where he slept, ate and socialised and what the journey to and from the mine was like. The experience made me a more considerate and understanding partner. After seeing an operating mine and camp with my own eyes, I was finally able to make sense of the mood swings before he headed back to work, and his inability to make regular, lengthy calls while he was away. One little problem remained ... how to make him understand what life was like for me while he was away at work! We have two beautiful kids and I work part time. Life is hectic. Breakfasts, lunches, take kids to school, work, pay the bills, pick kids up from school, after-school commitments (I should be eligible for a taxi license). Then there's the washing, ironing, cleaning, shopping, helping the kids with their homework ... and don't forget to feed the animals (bugger), tidy up the house and fall into bed. Don’t get me wrong - I love it. But let’s be honest: sometimes it can be a lot like ground hog day, and it's a side of life the worker away doesn’t really see. When he's home on FIFO R&R, there's the special meals, fun times catching up with

family and friends, avoiding the more boring household chores and generally making life as fun as possible. It’s totally understandable. When you don’t get to hang out as a family every day, you want the 'together' times to be as fun as possible. Unfortunately this often leads to misunderstandings, because the worker away can forget that R&R isn’t reality. My advice for both parties is to remember that it isn’t a competition. You are both exhausted and ultimately working towards the same goal. My husband and I are aiming to get the mortgage down, save for the future, finish landscaping the garden, give the kids the best start in life and help them excel at school. We both want the same things and both have a role to play in achieving them. It is not about who works harder, because let’s face it - both roles are hard and exhausting. So remember... • Take the time to explain what life is like while you are apart. Don’t play 'tit for tat', just explain what you find difficult. • We all like a little praise now and then. Acknowledge that your other half is working hard and that you love and appreciate them for it. • Reward yourselves. If you manage to pay some extra cash off the mortgage or have spent the last two months working hard to finish off a home project, treat yourselves to a night out. n

to transportable homes and high powered machinery,” Keryn said. “And inside we offered a fabulous setting on a mezzanine level where exhibitors could entertain potential clients in a relaxed atmosphere on a more personal level.” This year’s expo attracted representatives of

the mining and resources industry from Papua New Guinea and Australia including delegates from Ok Tedi, Barrick, Morobe Mining Joint Venture, MMG, Century Mine, Newcrest, and Rio Tinto to name a few. “We are hoping next year’s expo will have the same great support from businesses but also an increase in support from people coming along to view the products,” Keryn said. “We want to keep growing bigger and better and there is already a lot of interest for 2014.” Events such as the Expo not only demonstrate the region and industry’s broad capabilities and innovation, but also provide visitors and exhibitors with an effective way of making new contacts, meeting old friends and finding solutions to their needs. esearch from leading music streaming service Spotify reveals that Someone Like You by Adele is the perfect song to listen to for those suffering from a fear of flying, thanks to its tempo of 67 beats per minute and harmonious tones. The study carried out by anxiety psychologist Dr Becky Spelman from the Private Therapy Clinic in London was commissioned by Spotify to investigate the music that best helps calm the nerves of nervous flyers. She said travel anxiety, which affects up to 25% of adults, was caused by irrational thoughts where the threat is exaggerated and inappropriate. Dr Spelman’s research found that breathing in time to music with a low bpm at a controlled and reduced pace was proven to lower heart rate and blood pressure which in turn reduced anxiety. Another established method is to listen to tracks which stimulate both sides of the brain, while using headphones and with your eyes closed. The Spotify playlist, compiled by Dr Spelman, features an interesting mix of songs across various genres including classical and alternative rock, all of which can be used to help reduce the anxiety associated with a

fear of flying when listened to before and during a flight. Someone Like You by Adele is very close to the optimum bpm of around 60 – the perfect pace for slowing down breathing associated with fear and anxiety. It is also a soulful and harmonious song, which helps to stimulate both sides of the brain, making it the ultimate song for calming anxious nerves.
