WELCOME TO coffs harbour regional airport

C

offs Harbour Regional Airport is owned and operated by Coffs Harbour City Council. As a self funding business unit of council, the airport incurs no cost to local ratepayers and is a major economic driver for the region. Located just 5 minutes from the CBD, Coffs Harbour Regional Airport is one of the most accessible airports in the country and is the aviation gateway to the Coffs Coast. With a 2080m x 45m runway and a modern and efficient terminal building, the Coffs Harbour Regional Airport is well placed to cater for future growth in aviation on the mid-north coast. Coffs Harbour Airport continues to enjoy strong growth and is expected to handle around 350,000 passengers in the 2010/11 financial year. In September this year, the airport will play a major role in Rally Australia, Round 10 of the 2011 FIA World Rally Championships from the 8th to the 11th September. The northern section of the general aviation sector of the airport will be transformed into the service park for the rally and is expected to host up to 10,000 visitors a day during the rally. The Australian Round of the World Rally Championships in Coffs Harbour is expected to generate around $15 million in new economic benefit to the area and will be broadcast to a worldwide audience in excess of 53 million people. As one of the largest events ever held in Coffs Harbour, the airport is proud to be able to contribute to what we hope will be an extremely successful and rewarding event for the area. Whether you are a passenger or a visitor to the airport, we trust that you will enjoy the Coffs Harbour Airport experience. Dennis Martin Airport Manager

Licensed to fly F ive young men from Papua New Guinea and one from Coffs Harbour recently graduated from the Professional Pilot Training centre based at Coffs Harbour Airport. To qualify for their licence, the young men have undergone 16 months of intensive theoretical and practical aviation training on the ground at the airport and in the air over Coffs Coast. The Papua New Guinea cadets will return home and continue their aviation careers as first officers with Air Niugini while the local graduate will stay with Professional Pilot Training as a flight instructor.

...of Men and Machines

he men and women who participate in rallying are some of the most adventurous sports people in the world and, it's not just one individual. Rather it is about a close knit, highly skilled team of professional drivers, navigators, technicians, mechanics and team managers working together as one.

The Machines The cars too are not your average passenger vehicles. On the outside, they may resemble Ford Fiestas, Citroens and Mini Countrymen, but underneath they differ greatly. Their engines, transmission, suspension and body have been modified and muscled up to take the stresses and strains of thundering along a dirt road at up to 200kms per hour. For the technically minded, a World Rally car has power directed to all four wheels and their engines can develop more than 225 Kilowatts

and 600 Newton metres of Torque. Simply put, a well tuned and expertly driven rally car can accelerate from 0-100kms per hour in 3 seconds on a sealed or gravel road. That's impressive power! Most of the time rally cars perform to expectations, but sometimes they do not. Due to the stresses and strains of rally, something cracks. This is when the technician and mechanics step into the limelight to weave their 'magic'. They have to fault find, repair or finely tune the engines, suspensions and the on-board electronics to ensure the car gets back in the race. It becomes a race against the clock to make running repairs. Strict time limits are applied to all competitors who must abide by the rules or be penalised points and the possibility of disqualification. It is not uncommon that major components have to be replaced in

less than ideal conditions but these 'magicians' have been known to replace a complete gearbox in less than 30 minutes. And if you think that is pure magic, spare a though for the team manager. This person, with support of a handful of administration and technical staff, has the overall responsibility for team safety, driver and technical training and support, logistics as well as public relations with the team's vehicle manufacturer, team sponsors, WRC officials, media and the general public. Oh, and the all important budget. Even high profile World Rally teams need to live within their means and deliver value for money to their sponsors and supporters. That said, it is still the drivers who receive much of the attention from the media, fans and rally followers. Some of the high profile drivers soon to arrive on Coffs Coast include:-

The Men

Sebastien Loeb (France) - World Rally Champion

Mikko Hironen (Finland) - Rally Australia winner 2009

Ken Block (USA) - Rally and Gymkhana Driver

Kimi Raikkonen - (Finland) World Rally and ex-Formula 1 World Champion Driver

Sebastien Loeb started competitive sport as a gymnast. When in primary school, Sebastien won a number of regional competitions in his home province, Alsace, was the Grand East champion and was 5th in the French Championship. As a high school teenager, Sebastian tested his skills in another sport; moped racing - his first taste of engine power and a pointer towards his future in rallying. After finishing his schooling and starting working life as an electrician, all his money went to purchasing his 'dream car' - a Renault GT Turbo Super Five. It was from here that his motor racing career literally took off. As a 21 year old, Sebastien competed and finished second in Rallye Jeunes, an event for young people supervised by rally professionals. His performance caught the attention of the Ambition Sport Auto team, he was made a team member and provided with support, advice and importantly, the funds and a car to compete in regional events. In 1997, after winning

four category 1300 rallies and finishing highly placed in two 1600 series races, Sebastien was acclaimed as the Most Promising Driver of the Year by the prestigious French motor sport magazine, Echappement. After further successes in 1999, Sebastien was invited to join the French rally team and his first taste of World Rally. Of the three events in which he competed, he won two; Rallye de France and Rallye San Remo. The following year after an impressive win in the Rally du Var, Sebastien was offered an official contract to drive for Citroen. Since then, Sebastien Loeb has become a regular face on the winners' podium, capturing the World Rally Drivers Championship seven times from 2004 to 2011. This year, Sebastien - with fellow Citroen team driver Sebastien Ogier - will endeavour to repeat that performance on Coffs Coast.

In 2009 the Flying Finn, Mikko Hironen started the final round of the World Rally series with a one point lead over arch rival, Sebastien Loeb. But by the end of the race, Mikko was one point in arrears and came second in the Drivers Championship. This year, after round six of 13 rallies, Mikko is again placed second behind Loeb. But, he aims to do better this year perhaps on Coffs Coast. Like other drivers, Mikko began his racing when still a youngster - sitting on his father’s knee learning to drive on a frozen Finnish lake. He was obviously taught well by his father and other mentors along the way as he is now the number one driver for the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team. On his journey from novice to full-time professional rally driver, Mikko had many motorsport wins - his first with the support of his family. In addition to the early childhood driving lessons from dad, his cousin and sister acted as co-drivers while other family members became his pit crew making sure his car was tuned and rally ready. In 2001, while driving an Opel Astra, Mikko was within sight of winning the race and the Finnish Rally Championship when the car collided with rocks and gold became silver. Fortunately for this talented driver, persistence paid off. After

numerous rally wins and podium finishes in European rallies, Mikko’s driving skills were recognised and rewarded with a 12 month contract to drive a Ford Focus RS WRC 02 car in World Rally Championship events in 2003. With the Ford and later in a Subaru Impreza WRC 03 car, Mikko gained further rally experience and importantly, World Rally podium finishes - in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey and Greece. Then, in Australia in 2006, after three days of tough racing - winning the lead on stage 6, losing it soon after, then regaining the front running on stage nine and holding on until the chequered flag - he secured his first World Rally Championship win. Mikko again won the Australian round of World Rally when staged on the Tweed in 2009. Between, the flying Finn has had wins in Japan, Greece, Poland and his home country, Finland. This year, with the support of the Ford rally team, his loyal family and enthusiast fans, Mikko is flat out in pursuit of precious points that will hopefully earn him the 2011 World Rally Drivers Championship. Will he gain them on Coffs Coast? Who knows, so come along, cheer him on and perhaps meet one of the most popular drivers of World Rally, Mikko Hirvonen.

At the end of his first year of rally competition, Ken won the 2005 Rally America Rookie of the Year award. That year, he secured five top five finishes, third overall in his class and forth overall in the Rally America National Championship. Not bad for a beginner. While rallying is now his passion, Ken has also been an ‘action man’ in other sports including; snowboarding, skateboarding and motocross. There’s a rumour that Ken also holds the record for the world’s fastest snow cat, a modified Subaru STI. If you see him when in Coffs, ask him if it’s true! Now what is true is that early last year, Ken joined up with Ford to compete in the WRC, driving both a Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus RS as part of the Monster World Rally Team. His exploits behind the wheel of fast cars have been recognised by others too. Ken has appeared on the top rating motor show, Top Gear. In one episode he took the featured car for a spin, and rolled it! He is also featured in a computer

based rally game, Codemaster’s Dirt 2 along with his Subaru Rally Team USA Impreza. However, perhaps one of Ken’s many claims to fame, is his appearance on YouTube. As well as being a top rally driver, Ken is a highly skilled stunt or ‘Gymkhana’ driver. These drivers precision pilot their cars through courses, in and out of barriers, through tight corners and around obstacles at tremendous speed. Dangerous to perform and thrilling to watch. So when Ken released his latest Gymnkhana video on YouTube in September last year, it recorded seven million views - in the first week. Total views for Ken’s series of YouTube videos now exceeds 66 million. If you wish to see four minutes of Ken’s amazing driving skills, Google Search ‘Ken Block Gymkhana Practise’. To see the man in person driving fast along rally roads for three days, come along to Rally Australia on Coffs Coast.

Kimi is one of few people to remain cool, calm and calculating whether he is behind the wheel of a lightning fast F1 Ferrari, thundering along on a gravel rally road or relaxing poolside at home. So it’s no wonder he’s known as Iceman. His cool and calculating demeanour goes back a long way. When he was only 15 years old, Kimi competed in his first race outside Finland at Monaco. In that race, his steering wheel broke, but not his competitive spirit. He simply held up the steering wheel when in the home straight so as to inform his mechanic of his problem, then kept on going. Perhaps best known for his Formula One performances, Kimi drove for Sauber, McLaren and Ferrari from 2001

until his retirement from F1 in 2009. During those years, he achieved 62 podium finishes, 18 wins and a World Championship in 2007. In 2009, Kimi made his debut in World Rally in his home event, Rally Finland. As part of the team, ICE 1 Racing competing in that and the following year resulted in Kimi winning 10th place in the WRC Drivers Championships in 2010 driving a Citroen DS3 WRC. Kimi has proven he can drive fast and win on a Grand Prix track and has had some notable performances in World Rally, but is yet to podium - perhaps soon when competing in Rally Australia on Coffs Coast.

Mamasita Just around the corner from the Sofitel is this little gem, Mamasita Mexican Restaurant. In their own words the perception of Mexican food is changing rapidly and no longer do people have to resort to Americanised Mexican food. Mamasita proudly serves “real Mexican tacos and tostadas,” staying true to traditional cooking methods and flavours - a total treat for the tastebuds. My personal favourite was the taco filled with marinated prawns, habanero chillies and chipotle almond sauce – absolutely divine! The quality tequilas on offer are definitely worth a mention too! Level 1/11 Collins Street, Melbourne 03 9650 3821 www.mamasita.com.au

Gingerboy Serving “a modern interpretation of south east Asian hawker style street food,” Gingerboy’s ambience will have you chilling out for hours when it feels like minutes. The warm, funky design is the perfect setting for the taste sensations that unfold! A special mention goes to their char grilled asparagus rice noodle rolls with Japanese pumpkin and chilli vinegar as well as the steamed silken tofu – delicious! Just a word of warning though, Gingerboy has some seriously hot and spicy foods – perfect for those winter Melbourne evenings. 27/29 Crossley Street, Melbourne 03 9662 4200 www.gingerboy.com.au

Stay Sofitel Melbourne on Collins For the utmost in pleasure, there’s no going past this plush 5 Star hotel. From its first class position to the magnificent service and the beautiful design, what better way to kick start your Melbourne stay. Although it’s only minutes from the gastronomic and social delights that Melbourne is renowned for, the restaurants and bars within the Sofitel itself are impressive. NO35 is a seriously elegant dining destination, and a special mention goes to the buffet breakfast. Moet at 9am anyone? There’s also The Atrium Bar on level 35 as well as Sofi’s Lounge located next to the lobby. When it comes to the rooms, the impact felt from the 180 degree views is rather difficult to describe in words, and not even a picture

can do the real thing justice. Come to think of it, that’s one of the best things about the Sofitel; every room has that impact as the room levels only start from level 36! There is of course a slight danger that with all the room’s great features, you’ll be tempted to stay indoors instead of explore the city and with the tremendous service, this danger is kicked up a notch. You can’t help but smile when everyone greets you with a warm “bonjour”, a reminder of the hotel’s very French spirit. So, for the ultimate in accommodation, spoil yourself and stay at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins – there’s no better way to make it Melbourne. 25 Collins Street, Melbourne 03 9653 0000 www.sofitelmelbourne.com.au

The Toff in Town OK, it’s party time! And what better place than The Toff, a funky and rich venue where the drinks keep coming and the music sets a mood for fun. Located a floor above sister venue Cookie, The Toff’s main bar or ‘carriage room’ is very different with a 20th century style train carriage running down the centre. In the carriage, there are booths which you can reserve and each can be made super private by closing the doors or even pulling down the blinds! And the drinks? There’s a buzzer for service! f you’re looking for a seriously laid back holiday but want the option of adventure should the mood strike, take a trip to Norfolk Island - a destination where you’ll feel a world away from the rest. Only a short flight from Australian shores, the clock seems to tick a little slower on Norfolk; some say it’s the laid back attitude of the residents, while others believe there’s magic in the air. Personally though, I believe it’s a mixture of all the beautiful elements of the island from the convict-built Georgian buildings which are still in daily use to the Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) - now World Heritage Listed as part of the Australian Convict Sites inscription. To more on KAVHA, it’s actually one of the best preserved historical sights in the Pacific and when you walk amongst the ruins and restored buildings, you can’t help but feel as

though you’ve stepped back in time. There are many attractions and tours on the island from Convict Settlement and Kingston Tours to chapel tours and even cemetery tours (through the convict cemetery). Of course you can forget about an itinerary if you prefer to keep things a little more relaxed as there are plenty of lookouts and walking trails to take in some of the world’s most breathtaking sights. The pictures don’t do the views justice. And what about the cows? Let’s just say they have a little more command than anywhere else as they have right of way on Norfolk Island roads. Should you hit one, be prepared for hefty fines as well as being smacked with the bill for the damage to your car. One way to explore the island for the more adventurous is on horse back. Ride up the hills and take in the beautiful ocean views – there’s nothing else like it.

hen it comes to jewellery, Tibor and Janet Palatinus certainly know their stuff. They’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and while I’m sure it would be difficult to resist the temptation of buying something new from their gorgeous selection every day, being part of so many people’s ‘life highlights’ must be something truly special. When asked how it feels to be part of those special times in people’s lives like the 21st birthdays, the engagements, the weddings and the anniversaries, Janet says nothing else comes close. “It’s very fulfilling to see the excitement and happiness on a customer's face,” says Janet. “Just last weekend, we had a customer purchase a diamond engagement ring and after the purchase, his girlfriend joined him and he proposed right then and there! “Fortunately she said yes!” Opening their latest store, Silver

The options are endless... and Gold Warehouse in February this year on the site of their former store, Paragon Jewellery, Janet says the change came about because they wanted be better represented in the shopping centre with less of the high-end jewellery their previous store was known for. “We wanted to have more fashion oriented and branded jewellery,” Janet said. “But most importantly, we still maintain the quality and value for money for which Paragon Jewellery was renowned.” Silver and Gold Warehouse carries a wide range of stock and can design and make individual pieces to a customer's specifications. “Because we have our in-house jeweller, we can produce jewellery for customers using existing pieces they may want to re-design or from concept to finished product with gemstones or diamonds supplied by Silver and Gold Warehouse,” Janet added. “And we still have the same day jewellery repair service as well.” The best part is you don’t even have to go to the store to be able to shop there. Tibor and Janet can arrange orders and deliveries to anywhere in Australia, and even overseas if need be. And, for those ever loyal to the previous store, it’s not the last we’ll hear of Paragon Jewellery. “Paragon Jewellery will re-open toward the end of September in the shopping concourse associated with the new Hilton Hotel in Surfers Paradise,” said Janet. So make sure when you’re next in town, you pop in for a visit. Who knows, perhaps it will end up as one of your ‘life highlights’.

New lines on sale at Silver and Gold Warehouse include: • The Tuskc range of mens and ladies steel fashion jewellery. • Caseti mens jewellery, also in steel, features avant-garde designs and stunningly different pens. • The latest in personalised jewellery, represented by Legacy with a collection available in silver or gold (rose, white or yellow) of keep-sakes in bracelets, pendants, rings and key chains which can be engraved with one's own personal message, family names, quotes or anything which will be lasting and evoke memories to pass onto future generations. • Amber jewellery, available in gold or silver. • A fabulous range of 18ct. gold diamond and gemstone jewellery. Skin Sin

It’s just as important for men to take care of their skin, as it is for women By bettina toth

I

Again, order water over soft drink to keep yourself hydrated.

t’s the largest organ on the human body, most people carry almost 4 kilograms of it, and without it, we would literally evaporate into thin air – it’s our skin. There’s no doubt it’s very important to keep our skin healthy (yes gentlemen for you too!), so I caught up with Queensland beauty expert, Rachelle Lower to get a few top tips on skincare.

UV rays are stronger at high altitudes and pass through the windows, so be sure to keep nourished with an SPF factor, either separate or combined within your daily cream. Keep lip balm and hand cream within close proximity for reapplication during your flight. Omega 3 supplements and low doses of Zinc are great, to improve the skin’s appearance.

Rachelle, tell us a little about how you started out in the beauty industry. I studied at Queensland School of Beauty Therapy in Toowong, Brisbane. I’ve got a Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Certificate in spray tanning and spray tanning services as well as a Diploma in makeup artistry and theatrics. I worked in skin care and makeup at Clinique for four years before branching out on my own in August 2010. Now I’m at a business called beauty on Bank at Graceville which caters to all ages, both men and women. I perform all beauty treatments from facials to facial peels, tinting, waxing, tanning, makeup and hand a foot treatments. Wow. So you would know plenty of important tips for skincare then… The most important thing to do when it comes to skin care is EXFOLIATION. Everyone, every day produces one layer of unhealthy skin, so you can see why it’s important to remove it once a day. So (in a very non abrasive way) exfoliate the skin once a day in a smooth polishing manner. Everyone differs slightly of course according to how sensitive you are. Exfoliation is the key to great skin. OK, and anything in particular damaging to skin? Air-conditioning can be damaging to the skin if you don’t keep your skin nourished and hydrated. It completely sucks all the good water from the skin. A good day cream, whether it be moisturising or oil free, and plenty of water are very important. Water plays a key role in every bodily function, through circulation, transporting nutrients and oxygen to the face and body. We as humans are made up of

Skin expert, Rachelle Lower

Realistically, most of the time women take better care of their skin than men – what are your thoughts on that? Skin care is just as important, if not more important, for men as they tend to age quicker than women. They have thicker hardened skin in comparison to women and produce more dead skin cells in a shorter amount of time. Men’s skin is 15 per cent oilier than women’s, hence the importance of cleansing the skin very well, morning and night and daily exfoliation with a gentle polishing scrub.

“Skin care is just as important, if not more important, for men as they tend to age quicker than women.”

Finish with a light moisturiser with an SPF in the day and an oil free moisturiser for the night. For the ultimate in skin treatment, visit Rachelle at Beauty On Bank. 13 Bank Street, Graceville Ph: 0422 600 973 TIPS FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN

70 per cent water and we need to rehydrate our bodies constantly so our skin doesn’t dehydrate and become dry, flakey, uneven, or even become weak. Air-conditioning is a tough thing to avoid, especially for travellers… do you have any tips? If wearing makeup, be sure to take makeup wipes to remove it from your face after approx eight hours. This avoids clogging, excess oil build up and breakouts. Take a cleanser to clean the face (non water removal). Close the air vent above your head to stop direct air blowing onto your body and skin causing it to dry out and become tight.

• After shaving for the men, always moisturise with a product that has absolutely NO alcohol in it. • EXFOLIATE once a day. • ALWAYS use an SPF during the day • Everything in moderation. • Stay away from scrubs that contain rough elements that could damage the skin. • A good scrub will leave the skin feeling polished, smooth and invigorated, not hurt you. • Maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle. • Always rub creams into both your décolletage and your face starting from the bottom up. Drag the skin up, not down. This helps keep the elasticity in the skin for longer.

onda Aircraft Company Inc., recently announced the first FAA-conforming HondaJet light business jet achieved a maximum speed of 425 KTAS (787 km/h) and Mach 0.72. This achievement surpasses the company’s performance commitment of 420 KTAS for the production HondaJet. The FAA-conforming HondaJet’s maximum speed of 425 KTAS was recorded at 30,000 ft. in early March, less than three months after the aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight on the 20th December last year. “We are extremely pleased with the strong performance of the FAAconforming HondaJet early in the flight test program,” said Michimasa Fujino, Honda Aircraft Company President and CEO. “Our flight tests indicate the aircraft is handling and performing as expected, with excellent control harmony and stability. “The HondaJet’s unique over-the-wing engine mount configuration and natural laminar-flow leading edge and fuselage nose designs significantly reduce drag and greatly contribute to such outstanding performance. “In addition, the HondaJet’s HF120 engines are exhibiting carefree handling of thrust and are supporting top-level performance and efficiency.”

THE WARFARE

OF LOVE

M

AND MONEY

any couples who are interested in property investing are actively seeking ways increase their wealth and create financial security for their family and themselves. Already they are one step ahead of the pack; they are on the same page, working together and planning for their future and financial security. At a recent event I presented at, I asked the audience; “What is the greatest thing that most couples or family members fight about?” The answer was astoundingly clear..... “MONEY!” Money is the one thing that we use on an everyday basis, the one thing we cannot live without and the one thing that can cause us so much pain. Love can be grand until the arguments begin. And more often than not, it’s about that thing we just can’t run away from. People spend years of their lives arguing about finances; going round and around in circles and usually most of the arguments circle around a common theme – financial worry, debt and trying to decipher where the money has gone, who spent what and blaming each other. So what should you do if you and your partner simply can’t agree on how the finances should be handled? How do you move forward, stop the blame game and get on the same page as a couple? To give you an insight into how financially fit and functional couples succeed, we have constructed a list on how to keep the peace and progress together in both love and money:

Take responsibility for your finances The problem is not going away. This means facing the problem head on and deciding you are both ready to stop blaming each other and focus on a solution. This is not the time to ignore the issues, pretend they don’t exist, keep spending and sweeping problems under the rug! Devise a budget This one is difficult and you need to be totally transparent! Ensure you include absolutely everything; from weekly food shopping, petrol, kids sporting activities, hair dyes ...... absolutely everything! Yes this means including daily coffees or sneaky snacks and keep it realistic don’t begrudge yourself small indulgences (i.e. make it one of those nice ones where you can still go out for dinner occasionally and not feel guilty). Find an amazing mentor Find an amazing mentor or coach who can work through the details and issues and that can keep you on track at all times; someone you are accountable to and someone you know you both have to answer to. 6 Key Tips to Keep the Peace By naomi beaumont

people to do this, in addition to working out personalised financial structure ensuring clients are moving towards their goals quicker. Work out a step-by-step financial and property investing plan specifically tailored to your particular financial situation (self-employed or otherwise). You may need to consolidate debts and roll credit cards onto a lower interest rate to work through debt; you may need to refinance your home loan to release some equity and attain some cashflow. Whatever the problem is, no matter how complicated your finances may seem, you always work better when you have someone to answer to and mentor you. Pay bills together Become proactive and remember this is a partnership! Become active and involved and keep in mind that this is both of your money and you both need to be aware of what exactly is being spent each week on bills. Communication Communication is the key alongside complete honesty, so don’t keep money secrets or commit financial infidelity. For example, consult each other on larger purchases. If you start hiding new shoes in the cupboard, spending a sneaky $40 at the pub every couple of days with your mates or ripping price tags off tops, hanging them in your wardrobe and telling your partner, “What that old thing – I bought that month’s ago!”, you will absolutely blow the budget, your newly found financial trust and any hope of moving forward together financially.

Set some common goals Write them down and make it binding to ensure you both can see you are moving exactly towards this goal and where you want to go; for example paying off debt, saving for a holiday, investing for your future or buying a house or investment property. Love and money is the main conflict between so many couples with many of my clients telling me, “If we didn’t have money issues, we would be so much happier!” Unfortunately the old adage that ‘money doesn’t make you happy’, in today’s world is not so true. Money worries contribute to elevated stress levels, restless nights, anxiety and frustration – so how can this possibly not affect a relationship?

I have helped so many clients structure their finances in the best possible way to achieve the best results the fastest way and helped them research to find out if there is a better way to be saving money. For example, find out if there can be a better way to juggle the mortgage/s, credit cards, car loans, personal loan. Find out if there is a quicker and easier way to be achieving your financial goals as a couple. Find someone to work with you step-by-step. An impartial person and someone you can be fully accountable to. Find out if you have options and are using your income in the best possible way and investing your money correctly. Could you be building wealth or a passive income with property for yourself whilst you are working? Could your money be working for you harder and faster? If you need help in sorting through the money maze together, then you’re not alone. Love on its own is a complicated affair – however throw money into the equation and it’s understandable if you feel you may need some guidance. It’s time to face the music, give yourself a financial health check and stop the warfare of love and money – it really is easy once you’re on the same page. n About the Author Naomi Beaumont, Positive Real Estate National Finance Coach & Presenter ACT & Newcastle Head Coach (www.positiverealestate.com.au)

HOT, DRY, DROUGHT –

Perfect! By david ellis

hen you get hot, dry drought conditions in the Hunter Valley, you can bet you are going to get lowyielding, wonderfully-flavoursome fruit from the Shiraz vines that simply thrive under these harsh circumstances. And such was the 2007 vintage, giving Tintilla Estate’s James Lusby just what he wanted for his iconic Tintilla Reserve Shiraz. “If you could not make a good wine in 2007, you shouldn’t be in the winemaking game,” he jokes. “I love the subtleties of Hunter Shiraz and with our Reserve Shiraz, we aim for a flavour-based wine, not dominated or inhibited by high alcohol, a wine that will age well.” And that’s certainly what he achieved with the 2007: a wine with wonderful plum, blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, complemented with typical Shiraz black pepper and spice. At $30, this is a cracker drop to enjoy with wintry fare such as sweet and spicy beef short ribs and mash. NEED A FOOD/DRINK IDEA? Check out http://www.vintnews.com

One for Lunch:

AT its inaugural launch, the late Len Evans described Penfolds’ Yattarna Chardonnay as “a step forward for Australian Chardonnay,” referring to it being all about respecting the character of the individual sites from which its fruit originated. The latest Yattarna, the 2008 vintage, continues this philosophy with fruit for this 14th release coming from across Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills. “Our best fruit, from our best barriques for our best white,” says winemaker, Peter Gago. Australian Travellers don’t want to pay for hotel time they’re not using A

ustralian travellers want more value for dollar and flexibility when it comes to the way most hotels charge their guests, according to a new travel study. The national study of 1000 travellers commissioned by CheapHotels.com.au also revealed 69% of Australians said they would prefer to stay at a hotel that charges on a 24 hour basis and 61% think paying by the hour is a fairer way to pay for their hotel stay, over the traditional industry fee structure that charges guests the same price regardless of how long they actually stay in their room. Furthermore, 59% believe they should get a discounted rate when they check in late or check out early.

The study also shows Australians are spending less of their holiday time in their hotels, with 64% of respondents reporting that besides sleeping, they typically spend less than two hours a day at their hotel. However, 74% of respondents said accommodation costs ate up more than half of their travel budget. “The study indicates Australians aren’t always getting the most value out of their hotel stay and price savvy travellers are interested in shifting more towards a ‘pay for what you use’ model,” says Braden Yuill, Managing Director of CheapHotels.com.au. “Paying for a hotel by the hour used to conjure up images of sleazy rooms used for a romantic

rendezvous however, the trend is catching on around the world with a growing number of premium boutique hotels using a flexible pricing model as a point of difference and a way to build good will with travellers. “Offering more flexible pricing options for guests who’ve arrived on a late flight or who only need a place to crash for a few hours could help develop a new income stream for the hotel industry here in Australia.” Cheaphotels.com.au is a leading online hotel booking site offering the best prices on over 100,000 hotels worldwide with up to 75% off regular room rates. Cheaphotels.com.au never charge booking, cancellation or change fees. n

World Rally

Jargon A

ll industries and sport have their peculiar language and the world of rallying is no different. To help understand what is being said, here is a snippet of rally jargon to assist in overcoming the 'language barrier'. FIA The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, the governing body of motorsport worldwide. Based in Paris, the FIA regulates and controls the World Rally Championship. Gravel settings The choice of tyres and suspension adjustments to give a WRC car maximum performance on a loose-surfaced stage. HANS device A 'head and neck support device' worn on the shoulders and around the back which is connected to the helmet to restrain movement in the event of an accident. These devices are compulsory for all drivers and their co-driver/navigator.

are held - between the day's finish and the next day start. This will be at Coffs Harbour Airport. Race suits Race crew overalls worn by appropriate team members for safety. Each suit has three layers of flameproof material. Also worn are flameproof underwear and a flameproof balaclava under safety helmets, boots and gloves. Sequential gearbox Fitted to most rally cars, this allows gear selection by simply pushing or pulling the lever rather than the traditional manual 'H' gear shift system typical on production/domestic cars. It’s the same principle as used on motorcycle gearshifts. Service park The area designated for teams to undertake vehicle checks, maintenance and running repairs, subject to strict time limits. This will be at Coffs Harbour Airport.

OTL Over the limit. Competitors arriving more than 30 minutes later than the target time between two time controls, at the end of each section and/or day of the rally are said to be OTL, and must retire from the day’s competition. Recce Drivers and co-drivers are allowed two days to reconnoitre the course at a set speed of between 50 and 70 kms/hour. This allows the team to familiarise themselves with the route, take notes and measure the twists and turns in readiness for the race. Recce car A typical production car used by the driver/codriver on their Recce and note taking drive of the course. Restrictor This is a plate of a set aperture fitted to all rally cars to restrict the flow of fuel/ air mixture to the combustion chamber limiting engine output to 300bhp. Without it, rally car engines would produce more than 500 bhp.

Stage time The time recorded from the standing start of a stage to the flying finish. Stop control A point 200-500 metres past the flying finish where the car must stop to have its time recorded. SupeRally Drivers who retire on the first and second days of a rally can restart under the SupeRally system on the following day providing their car is safe to do so and can be repaired within the regulations. However, they will receive five minutes of time penalties for every stage missed. Target time The official time allowed for a WRC car to complete a non-competitive road section. Time penalties are applied if competitors check-in earlier or later than the target time.

Road Book A set of instructions and route maps issued to race crews by the race organisers.

Time control The place where cars must stop to get an official passing time recorded by rally officials.

Pace Notes Notes taken by the driver and co-driver when on their pre-race Recce. Then during the rally, the co-driver calls out the description of the road ahead to the driver to maximise their speed, safety and performance. Power Stage This is the final stage of a WRC rally. At Rally Australia, the stage will be less than 5kms in distance and televised live around the world and in Australia. The first three finishers in the Power Stage earn bonus championship points, so there’s always plenty at stake until the very end of the rally. Park ferme The secure area where all competing rally cars

Shakedown The opportunity for crews to check their competition cars, on terrain similar to the rally, just before the event starts. Competitors drive through the shakedown stage at least four times.

Time penalty Rally crews are penalised 10 seconds for every minute the car is late to a time control - for instance a stage start, service-in control, serviceout control. Checking in early to a time control carries a stiffer penalty of one minute for every minute early. Zero car A course car driven through a stage before the competitors start it to alert spectators that the section is live and also to finally confirm the road is clear for following competitors. The zero car is preceded by the triple zero and double zero cars. Source: FIA World Rally Championship website www.wrc.com

or some, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the world’s best rally drivers and crews up close. As well as ticketed entry, there will be free opportunities to see the rally stars. The opening in the Coffs Harbour City Centre is one. Starting at 4.30 pm on Thursday 8th September, the city centre will come alive with all entrants lined up and drivers available to sign autographs and speak to the public from the presentation stage. The Service Park at the general aviation section of Coffs Harbour Airport is another free entry location. This is where teams will be based to undertake service and repairs on competition cars. There is usually plenty of drama as mechanics undertake repairs in limited time to keep their team in the competition. The Service Park will also be the key location for the sale of team and event souvenirs. The most economical ticket is the $25 General Admission ticket however it must be purchased prior to the event to obtain the discount. Talk Back with OCCUPATION: Singer, lover, Dad.

FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION: I took my wife Robby to Broome, WA for our honeymoon back in 1999 and we’ve just come back from another visit to that magnificent part of Australia. We always pack an esky, a beach umbrella and hire a Landcruiser to get around up there. Of all the places I have been and things I’ve done, spending time in the sun at Cable Beach, swimming, having a few drinks and staying on to watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean ranks top of the list. A visit to the famous Paspaley Pearls showroom can be dangerous, but ensures that most blokes who buy these magnificent pearls for their loved one, receive enough “get out of jail for free cards“ to last a year or two.

Lee Kernaghan WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT:

MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT:

Here are “some” of the items on my pre departure checklist. My hat, iPod, Etymotic ER6 earphones, running shoes, heart-rate monitor and gym clothes. Vitamins, protein powder, sports supplements, Maui Jim wrap around sunglasses, phone chargers and a good book. I’m always red lining when it comes to excess baggage but it pays to be prepared.

Well it involves a long flight to LA, becoming a member of a “certain” club and the cabin crew bringing out a bottle of complimentary champagne to celebrate the special occasion… how did they know!!?

TRAVEL TIP: When travelling overseas, always buy lots of stuff. How hard it is to get back home and think about all the things you wished you’d bought but left behind?

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU NEXT: This year we’ll be out on the road with the Pubs Clubs and Carparks Tour. I also have a lot of song writing planned and head back into the studio in September to record a new album.
