n the last issue of this magazine, it was mentioned that the resurfacing project of the main runway was about to commence. I am pleased to advise that Stage One of the project is now complete. The second stage of this project will soon commence which is the grooving and line marking of the new runway surface. This is expected to be finalised by the end of November and extend the life of the runway for up to 15 years. The refurbishment of vital infrastructure is crucial not only from an operational and safety perspective, it is equally important for continued growth and development of airport business which is steadily increasing. Coffs Harbour Regional Airport now welcomes over 360,000 travellers per annum which is the trigger point requiring the installation and operation of permanent on-site Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting facilities. This is our next major project which is soon to commence. This facility will be built at the northern end of the aircraft parking apron outside the main air-freight terminal. Once operational, this will provide specialist on-site fire fighting personnel and equipment and permanent employment of several staff. This and the activity generated during the construction phase will provide additional business and employment opportunities for our community. In this issue, we also have a story on Our Man Q, Qantaslink’s Station Manager, Rob Crawford. Regular travellers will no doubt recognise and know Rob, but how many know how he came to live and work on Coffs Coast ? Rob kindly told us a little of his history and why he enjoys his work and his community. You will find his story on page 6. There is also a short piece on the history and current happenings at the historical and much loved Jetty Memorial Theatre. While we have our well known media and movie stars of the small and silver screens, we also have local and national performers and performances that bring another dimension to the cultural life of Coffs Coast. So the next time you are thinking of taking in a show, think also of the offerings at the Jetty Memorial Theatre. Its story is on page 28. In closing, I will return to my opening comments. The successful completion of Stage One of the runway resurfacing was conducted only at night. This meant no interruptions to the regular services of QantasLink, Virgin Australia and Tigerair services. It did however interrupt regular work and sleep patterns for our staff including; Operations Officer, Mark Fitton and Airport Reporting Officers, Boris, Steve, Terry, Paul and temporary Reporting Officer, Craig. For their commitment and cooperation to ensuring this work was successfully completed, I extend my sincere thanks for an outstanding effort from all concerned. Until next time, I wish one and all safe and comfortable travel. Dennis Martin Airport Manager

tage One of the upgrade of the main Coffs Harbour Airport runway is now complete. The full 2080 metres has been resurfaced extending its life for up to another 15 years. Each evening after the last flight of the day and before the first flight next morning, Coffs Harbour Airport staff worked with contractors Fulton Hogan to strip and replace 150-200 metre sections of the runway surface. This work method ensured there were no interruptions to our airline partners’ flight schedules, or any inconvenience for their respective customers travelling to and from Coffs Coast. The final stage of these works will be cutting grooves into the runway to facilitate surface water runoff and to repaint the main runway and taxi-ways. This work will soon commence and subject to weather, will be completed by the end of November. With the arrival of Tigerair and the constantly growing patronage for travel with Virgin Australia and QantasLink, the number of people in the terminal especially at peak times has increased significantly. This resulted in high demand for seating. Therefore, additional tables and chairs were acquired and placed in the departure and gate lounges and this is being monitored to

ensure convenience and comfort for visitors and travellers. The new arrangements with personal security screening has been in operation for a few months now and from feedback received from security personnel, airline and airport staff this appears to be functioning smoothly. And a reminder to those who may be visiting the airport to welcome family and friends, access to the Arrivals Hall is at the southern end of the terminal where security screening in not required. You will also find tables and chairs and Biggles CafĂŠ Bar to relax and enjoy a refreshment and snack. With passenger numbers steadily increasing and recently exceeding 360,000 per annum, Coffs Harbour Airport is required to have permanent on-site Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting facilities. Planning is now underway for this to be constructed adjacent to the terminal

on the northern boundary of the aircraft parking apron. This will generate additional employment during the construction phase as well as create several ongoing full-time fire fighting positions for Coffs Harbour. And finally, now that the foundations and fencing has been installed for the new Bureau of Meteorology station within the airport perimeter, work will soon commence on construction of the administration building. Much has been achieved over the past few months up-grading the level of convenience, comfort and facilities at the Airport however there is still more to be accomplished. Over the next few months, you will be kept up-to-date with work in progress aimed at keeping Coffs Harbour Regional Airport one of the very best in regional Australia. n

Our Man Q

Rob Crawford, Qantaslink. Copyright Rob Cleary - Seen Australia.

O

ver the years, a number of actors have appeared as Q, in Eon Productions’ James Bond 007 films. The first was Peter Burton, then came the beloved and long-serving Desmond Llewellyn, next the eccentric John Cleese and most recently the young computer whiz, Ben Whishaw. All play their part in keeping 007 up-to-date with the latest gadgets to help him survive in the world of international espionage. No matter where he ventured around the world on Her Majesty’s Secret Service assignments, James relied on Q to help him survive with gadgets like; fast cars, firearms, miniaturised listening devices, expert knowledge on computer security and so on. And on two

6

Issue 21

occasions, in the films Octopussy and Licensed to Kill, Q actually joined 007 in field work; a good man to have on-side. In the James Bond 007 films, Q stands for Quartermaster and the person, Major Boothroyd. However, for Our Man Q, the letter stands for Qantas and our man is Rob Crawford. And he has been on station at Coffs Harbour Airport for some 21 years. He too is a good man to have on side wherever your travel assignments lead you. Our Rob is a born and bred Kiwi who hails from the North Island. After finishing his schooling he joined the New Zealand Post Office (NZPO). For 20 years Rob was on station in Palmerston North and Hawera, serving Her Majesty’s New Zealand citizens. According

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

to Rob, this was an interesting and at times challenging career. Not only did the NZPO offer traditional communication services, it also delivered a range of community services including; registering births, deaths, marriages, cars, issuing television and fishing licenses, enrolling people to vote and collecting pensions. Postmasters were able to conduct wedding ceremonies and also had the task of taking daily weather observations for the NZ Meteorological Office. This was perhaps an omen for his future role at Coffs Harbour Airport where he is sometimes challenged with looking after varied needs and special requests of Qantas travellers. Rob recalls on his watch over the past 20 years, only

three items have gone astray, most items turning up on the next flight. In the late 1980’s the NZPO underwent structural change with the organisation reformed into three separate entities and their 1700 staff reduced in number. Rob chose redundancy and headed across The Ditch to Australia. To get a better feel for the place he circumnavigated the country by car. Along the way he stopped over in Bellingen to visit his sister who had migrated some years earlier. He too liked the quiet rural, laid-back atmosphere similar to his homeland and decided to stay. His first jobs were harvesting pecans on a farm in Thora and some part-time customer service duties at the Coffs Harbour Postal Centre. But before long, Rob realised he needed to improve his employment chances so he enrolled in a travel agency course at TAFE. One of Rob’s tutors at TAFE was Paul Kelly, partner and co-owner of Kelly Travel and now, Coffs Coast Travel Services. According to Paul, Rob was a diligent and bright student with a quiet competence and friendly personality. So in late1991 when Kelly Travel won the Qantas contract to supply ground handling, ticketing, promotion and customer services at Coffs Harbour Airport, Rob was invited to join the company.

As Station Manager for Qantaslink, Rob has seen many changes over the past years. When he commenced duties in 1992, three airlines serviced Coffs Coast – Qantas, Ansett and Oxley Airlines. Qantas offered a morning and evening service, Ansett likewise with an additional midday service on Fridays while Oxley flew the milk-run coastal route between Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs and Brisbane. The planes back then were smaller, loud and not as comfortable for passengers as today’s aircraft. The Qantas aircraft was a Q 100 with 36 seats, passenger lists were faxed to Coffs from Sydney and the economy class airfare between Coffs Harbour and Sydney was $72. Rob recalls when people farewelling and welcoming their family and friends could sit outside the terminal building on the grass bound only by a low fence. And he remembers when travellers, particularly children were able to visit the flight-deck to talk with the captain and see the view from the front windows. How times have changed. Back to 1992, Rob remembers Coffs Harbour Airport as a much smaller building. Now, the terminal is larger, with improved lounge and departure gate ambience and seating, has upgraded parking for cars and aircraft. And Coffs

Coast now has three major carriers offering a wide variety of destinations, services, and fares. Rob is particularly proud that QantasLink now offers up to six services most days between Coffs and Sydney. Technology has changed the way business is conducted – even for airlines. Travellers can now book, pay, print their ticket and select their seat on-line. Today’s aircraft are faster, quieter and more fuel efficient and most recently in Sydney, Qantas operations have combined regional and interstate transfers to the one terminal – T 3. No more traversing from T2 to T3 via the car park. And if you are a member of Qantas Club, private guest lounges are available in Coffs and most ports around the Qantas network – Australia and World-wide. So when you need assistance with your travel or keeping up-to-date with changes with the Qantas network, Rob is your man. One thing according to Rob that has not changed is the joy and pleasure he has for looking after his customers. Some are local folk going on holiday, others politicians travelling to and from Canberra, a few are movies stars visiting home or off to some exotic film location while others are sporting teams off to represent Coffs Coast and their country. In many ways he has grown up with Coffs Harbour Airport and the people of Coffs Coast. Some he escorted on-board for their first flight, originally as a young unaccompanied minor who now fly solo to many parts of the world for business and pleasure. And for Rob, it is always a pleasure to see them. So the next time you venture from home for business or pleasure or perhaps undercover on Her Majesty’s Secret Service, one of the last and first people to say farewell and welcome home will be our dedicated and long-serving man Q – Rob Crawford, QantasLink Station Manager, Coffs Harbour Regional Airport. n

FIGHTING FIT

Rob Schneider Inflight Publishing Editor Lahnee Pavlovich has a chat with funny man Rob Schneider about his upcoming Live tour around the land down under. And yes, he is just as lovely and just as hilarious on the phone as he is on the screen!

R

OB, THANKS FOR HAVING A CHAT TO ME TODAY. NOW YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR LIVE STAND-UP TOUR TO AUSTRALIA IN OCTOBER, YOU HAVE VISITED US BEFORE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PLACE? Australia is actually one of my favourite places to go and one of the only places my wife gets excited about visiting. It’s like the size of the US with the population of Los Angeles. The food is nice, the people have a great sense of humour. Actually most of the artwork I own is from Australia; I have quite a few pieces of Aboriginal artwork. They are so beautiful. And I love the adventurous spirit Aussies

8

Issue 21

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

have. Only about 20% of Americans have a passport, pretty much every Aussie has one. They have this sense of travel. I’ve never been to a place anywhere in the world and not ran into an Aussie. In fact, I was literally on a glacier in Iceland, on a snow mobile, covered in ice gear and this guy comes up to me and says ‘how you goin mate, you know where we can get a good beer around ere?’. It’s great! AND DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT? Australia is just so enormous. There’s a lot I haven’t seen yet but I’m really excited to perform at the Opera House, it’s an iconic venue and you have to be an accomplished performer to get the

chance to perform there so that’s a big honour. Sydney Harbour is one of the prettiest in the world. I also love Perth, the people are great and Melbourne is good too because it’s one of the only places I can buy a suit that fits me. There are so many short Greeks in Melbourne, wide and short like me – so the suits fit perfectly! Brisbane is also very lovely. YOU ARE PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR YOUR COMEDIC ACTING ROLES, YOU’VE DONE MOVIES LIKE DEUCE BIGALO, GROWN-UPS, THE ANIMAL – WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE ROLE TO PLAY AND WHY? Duece Bigalow was a lot of fun. Big Stan,

the prison movie was great and I think doing 50 First Dates was probably one of my favourites. The Hot Chick was pretty funny playing a teenage girl. I don’t think I could do any of that again though. It will actually be pretty fun when my little girl grows up and gets to see those movies – but not until she’s about 15.

It’s an incredible process, and you know they say if Shakespeare was alive, he’d be a film maker. The downside to film is that it’s expensive, has its ups and downs and it can break even the greatest. Show business is tough. Stand up is rewarding, you are standing in front of an audience that are all excited to see you.

THIS MONTH YOU ARE IN AUSTRALIA WITH YOUR LIVE TOUR, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE? The show is really just different forms of midlife crisis. Stuff people can relate to. I mean my wife and I had an accidental baby 10 months ago and it turned out to be one of the best things to happen in my life. Most accidents are. And of course there are a lot of jokes in the show. THE TYPES OF CHARACTERS YOU PLAY ARE PRETTY OUT THERE AND VERY FUNNY, IS YOUR STAND-UP SIMILAR? I think the stand-up has aged better; it’s a little more mature but still inane, a bit dirty and naughty. It’s hard to shock people anymore, they see so much, but I want people to laugh, and have a laugh at themselves as well. I try to mix it all up and have a bit of fun. YOU STARTED OFF DOING COMEDY AS A TEENAGER THEN MOVED INTO THE BIG FILMS, BUT WENT BACK TO STAND-UP IN 2011 WAS IT? It was actually 2009 but I’d gotten good at it by 2011. AND WHAT DO YOU PREFER, STAND-UP OR FILM? I really enjoy doing stand-up; it’s challenging performing to a live audience. And it’s wonderfully contemporary. No show is the same and you have this amazing chance to connect with the audience and bring them together. Then with film, there is something immortal about it. The magic of film is that the cameras capture these legends and you see a reflection of them on the screen, even after they are long gone. If you can make people laugh in film,

WHAT ABOUT THE ROB SCHNEIDER WE DON’T SEE ON STAGE OR ON THE BIG SCREEN? Well hopefully I’m smarter, better mannered, more handsome. I think I’m probably a bit more serious, dry, shorter than on screen.

that’s a rare thing, and people remember it for ever. And you have the ability to enhance the experience with music, editing, and other actors. Following a sold out tour in 2011, Emmy-nominated actor Rob Schneider, well known for his trademark blend of character and comedic acting, returns to Australia for his national tour. Schneider began writing jokes as a teenager and made his major network debut in 1987 on The David Letterman Show. Then it was into the big time with a host of films under his belt including Deuce Bigalow, Big Stan, 50 First Dates, The Hot Chick, The Animal and countless others with longtime pal Adam Sandler for Happy Madison Productions.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE? I want to do a few more movies, but I don’t feel a crushing determination like when I started out. There are still things I want to try and accomplish. But hanging out with my wife and daughter is my top priority. They are coming on this tour with me. I’m really excited about that; getting to share this experience with my family. In fact, this may just be my last Live tour. I’m doing it out of love to the fans in Aus who have always supported my movies. n Now, after nearly 20 years, Schneider returns to stand-up and is bringing his antics down under. The SBS Feast Tastings on Hastings food and wine festival kicked off on October 6 with Breakfast in the Beds at Near River Organic Farm and will crescendo on October 27 with the main event, a huge free outdoor festival held throughout the Port Macquarie town centre and riverfront on Town Green. The main event will feature more than 100 exhibitors who grow, bake and make the specialties of this fertile food bowl. The SBS Feast Cooking Demonstration Arena will feature Luke Nguyen, Gabriele Gate and Patrick Friesen alongside local chefs, plus there will be live music at the Sundowner River Stage, children’s entertainment beneath an ancient fig tree, and wandering musicians. This event attracted a record 16,000 people last year. The program also features intimate events at farms, restaurants, wineries and breweries. Get glammed up for the Jazz and Shiraz 1830’s inspired dinner at the new Eighteen Thirty Restaurant, Black Duck Brewery’s seven course beer and food matching and The Corner Restaurant’s five course degustation dinner. Or lace up your shoes and learn how food is grown at the Landcare Farm Gate tours, an inspiring walk around a handful of organic and sustainable farms. The SBS Feast Tastings on Hastings is the largest food and wine festival in the region and to celebrate its growth and commitment to sustainability this year’s theme is ‘Green and Growing’.

Join the fun and explore Port Macquarie’s thriving foodie culture during October or anytime throughout the year. There are winery tours, tastings at boutique brewers, farmers markets and dining at award winning restaurants and cafes. While you’re there enjoy a range of other experiences including a river cruise to see the local dolphins, horse riding at Bellrowan Valley, feeding the animals at Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park, or simply relaxing at one of the 17 beaches. Port Macquarie is a four hour drive North of Sydney or a one hour flight from Sydney and Brisbane with connections to the rest of Australia. A range of accommodation is available from 4.5 star waterfront hotels, eco-style tree houses to self-contained apartments. RELATIONSHIP MATTERS

W

Fifo lovin’ BY ALY EVEILLE

hat do you enjoy most about your relationship? Sunday spooning? Having an unfailing date for any occasion? Maybe you’re in one of those relationships where a little time apart gives you an excuse to make time together that bit more special. That's how I look at it anyway. Being the partner of a FIFO worker isn't for everyone. Despite that attractive pay cheque, some couples need daily interaction and the idea of having a ‘three on, one off’ love life just isn’t attainable for everyone. So fellas, if you’re struggling to find the right balance with your chaotic roster, consider these words of wisdom from a seasoned long-distance FIFO girlfriend. Laptop, mobile, tablet – pick one and pick it up! Twelve-hour days are tough but we still want to hear about it. The hardest thing about my bloke being on site is the difficulty of making plans. Dedicated communication time is king! Don’t underestimate the power of positivity. Use your time off as an excuse to plan a special weekend. Head out to that new Steakhouse or grab a hotel for weekend. Your other half will love it and let’s face it, you can afford it! Appreciate home and take advantage of it! That means – kick off those steel caps and relax! I’m sure you’ve earned it and chances are you’ve been missed enough to have breakfast in bed whipped up for you (on one day, at least). So when you’re slipping into that second working week and are feeling nostalgic, just remember that you don’t have to help with dinner once for the rest of your roster! You won’t be asked to take the bin out or wash the car... Realistically, you’ve got it made. Except for that whole getting up at 4am thing. We don’t envy you there! n

MONEY MATTERS

Low risk super puts a better retirement at risk I

’m a firm believer that superannuation has a lot going for it. Without super many Australians would end up facing a very thrifty retirement, and because we can’t normally access our super until preservation age – between 55 and 60 depending on when you were born, our nest egg benefits from healthy long term returns. Just what sort of returns your fund will achieve depends on the investment option you select for your super. According to research group SuperRatings, last year was a bumper one for super with balanced funds delivering returns of around 11.7% for the 2012 calendar year. The key driver was returns of 17.9% for Australian shares and 13.6% for international shares. Many people are surprised to learn that ‘balanced’ funds have a sizeable proportion – usually around 60% to 70% of the fund’s money

invested in share markets. It’s a strategy that makes a lot of sense though. Quality shares grow in value over time to provide capital gains that add to ongoing dividend income. Both help to grow your super. The downside is that equity markets move in cycles, and the value of your super can take a hit at times when shares are experiencing dips. But over the long run the upswings will more than make up for the downturns. This is an important issue to consider when it comes to choosing how your super is invested. A recent industry survey found that one in two young workers would choose a ‘low risk’ option. During the height of the financial crisis when stock markets tanked, many people did just that – shifting their nest egg from balanced or growth options to low risk choices. On the face of it, choosing a low risk strategy for your super can seem like a good idea. After

all, none of us want to jeopardise our retirement nest egg. That catch is that low risk equals low returns. By ticking the low risk box on your fund’s menu of options you face the prospect that your super may not earn sufficient returns to outpace inflation. It all highlights the need to understand how your super is invested – and whether it’s the best choice for your life stage. If you are in, or near, retirement switching at least part of your nest egg to low risk investments can be a sensible strategy and your financial adviser can help you with this decision. For the rest of us, choosing a balanced, growth or high growth strategy will see your fund’s value move around from year to year. Over time however you should reap the rewards of higher returns - and that means more money to live on in retirement. n

4 foods you should

isolate (a refined, often genetically-modified form of soy that pops up in a lot of soy-based products). Processed soy boosts the hormone estrogen in your body and some research has shown that it can increase the risk of cancer, weight gain, acne and infertility in women.

uinoa with grass fed protein powder for breakfast. Dominated. Organic green tea – yes, currently sipping. Acai berry. Ahhhh – say what? There is a new trend emerging with the latest super foods to eat and keep on our radar, but what about the bad stuff not to touch. Here are the top 4 foods that you should never eat again. Avoid them like you do your ex.

The cold side of cold cuts: A bite of your BBQ meat lover pizza might seem like your tastebuds are entering nirvana after a weekend of debauchery and long necks. Salami, ham, roast beef and other deli meats are poor quality, packed with sodium and made from animals raised on hormones and antibiotics. Strong evidence was unravelled that eating processed meat is linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer and a suggested link with lung, stomach, prostate and oesophageal cancer.

Sweet deception: Yes I get it you’re sweet enough so you cut the sugar and go artificial. Rookie mistake. Not only

The white stuff:

have fake sweeteners been linked to people not losing weight but they contain a list of alleged medical issues to promote a seizure. Aspartame which is found in most diet drinks and chewing gum has been linked to a number of diseases, can impair the immune system, and is even known to cause cancer. If it is made in a lab, it's probably better to avoid it.

Soy ya later: For all those soy latte sipping health fanatics, sorry to pop your soy bubble but this is not a healthy food group. All soy isn't bad albeit. However you don’t want to be touching the

It's unfortunate so many peeps think the right fuel for starting their day means grabbing a doughy white roll or dunking their spoon in a bowl of cereal. When you eat a lot of sugar, the carbohydrates get used up quickly and your blood sugar shoots up. As a result, your brain quits making orexin, and without this neuropeptide you will feel bloated and want to crawl under your desk to have a nap.

FIGHTING FIT

This is INSANE Y’all! WHEN YOU ARE STRAPPED FOR TIME, HAVE NO ACCESS TO A GYM, WORK IRREGULAR, LONG HOURS, FITTING IN A WORKOUT IS TOUGH. OR IS IT?

U

S fitness guru Shaun-T has developed a 60 day, do-it-at-home workout DVD program INSANITY. And it’s insane! In fact, it’s been said that INSANITY is the hardest workout programme ever put on DVD. Shaun T will push you past your limits with 10 workout discs packed with plyometric drills on top of nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance, and ab and core training moves. No equipment or weights needed. Just the will to get the hardest body you've ever had. Are you ready to dig deep? Your Editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a chat to Shaun-T about what to expect. Q. Hey Shaun, can you tell me a bit about yourself and how you got into fitness? A. When I was in college, school work and my schedule got in the way, and I was like "I can't do it today." I didn't even think about staying fit really. At one point I was 50 pounds overweight. I looked back and was like, this is ridiculous. I need to stop making excuses. That's actually what propelled me into becoming the fitness instructor that I am today.

Q. Why is it so important for people to live healthy lifestyles and to get fit? A. There is nothing more important than how someone treats themselves both inside and outside. Your body is your equipment. It's a machine. You have to keep your machine healthy. Q. What’s the difference between your programs and other programs out there? A. INSANITY is training that utilises your own body weight to get the results you want. This type of training gives you strength and endurance in the same workout. No gym, no weights, no equipment, just your own body’s resistance. Q. Can you tell me a bit about the style of training people will be doing in the INSANITY program and why it works? A. INSANITY works because I took traditional interval training and flipped it on its head. I call it MAX Interval Training. In the workouts, you do longs bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you

alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals. I can be tough but my goal is to keep people motivated and to push everyone to do their best. Q. What’s the most important thing to remember when starting out on the program? A. Stay committed each and every day. No one should have to persuade you to do it. If you're hesitant or have a minute of doubt, INSANITY probably isn't for you. It's about 40 minutes per day at first. When you get to month two, the max interval part, I'd map out an hour each day, which includes stretching and cooling down. That hour a day will become a gift to yourself. I've had people who weigh more than 300 pounds do it, and they just modify it. You mostly need to be mentally ready. Q. How will people feel throughout the program from start to finish? A. It may be hard at first but just stay with it. People feel amazing when they finish. Not just because of their physical results but also the great accomplishment of staying with it and doing something truly positive. Finishing is a badge of honour. The number one thing to remember is to stay committed, even though you will sometimes lose self-motivation because it’s tough, every time you finish a workout pat yourself on the back and know you're one step closer! Q. I’m about to embark on this journey myself, any tips on how to get through the 60 days? A. The first two weeks is when we see the highest percentage of quitting. And it's because they are just totally exhausted. I suggest those people do that day's workout the best they can. Q. Any other information you’d like to add? A. Dig Deep! Visit www.beachbody.com.au (Check out our next edition to see how your Editor Lahnee went on the INSANITY challenge!) n

dust: A CAUSE FOR CONCERN T

he risk to human health can be severe in situations where dust is poorly controlled. Choosing an effective dust suppression solution is an effective way to mitigate the problem. People living or working in close proximity to environments that produce substantial levels of dust are vulnerable to significant health risks. Managing Director of Tecpro Australia Graeme Cooper said areas such as mining environments or in corridors where coal is being transported or offloaded can experience problems with fugitive dust. “For people close by, some types of dust can cause irritation and inflammation such as rhinitis or bronchitis. Irritable dust can usually be eliminated from the body by its natural defence system such as coughing or sneezing. But there are also some types of dust that are respirable which can cause irreversible harm,” he said. Mr Cooper said the degree of potential harm is influenced by a number of factors. These include the chemical or mineralogical composition of the dust, its concentration, the size and shape of the particles and the length of time a person is exposed to the dust. “The types of dust that are harmful to humans include silica, coal, asbestos, synthetic mineral fibres, cotton, wood, animal and vegetable dusts,” Mr Cooper said. “They can cause problems ranging from allergic reactions to breathlessness or in the case of asbestos dust, cancer. And where organic dusts accumulates – such as around flour, grain, or wood milling – an explosion hazard is another potential risk. “In these types of environments, a spark or hot surface could ignite the dust, causing a serious blast.” Visit www.tecpro.com.au n

Rehearsal for 2 Floors Up at Jetty Memorial Theatre. Copyright Rob Cleary - Seen Australia.

On with the show… Act 1. Coffs Harbour’s heritage listed and much loved Jetty Memorial Theatre started life in 1928 as a public hall dedicated to the memory of World War I soldiers. Estimated to have cost $187,000 in today’s currency it served the community as the venue for a variety of social and special events for its first two years.

Act 2. In 1930 the building was leased and run as a cinema with pictures being screened every Saturday evening. It was an occasion to see the stars of the silver screen and to socialise with friends and family. And for romantic theatre goers it was a chance to sit in back rows to canoodle and cuddle up. However, after many years of patronage, it was in need of refurbishment.

Act 3. In 1948 a lick of paint was applied inside and out, new curtains hung and the latest projection and sound equipment installed. The Jetty Memorial Theatre was reborn

and up-to-date. It stayed this way until the late 1970’s when the Town Council were persuaded to allow the venue to be used for live performance.

Act 4. Between 1980 and 2003, the theatre was managed by a community based council committee which through their efforts and with the support of Coffs Harbour Vietnam Veterans, developed the building for the pursuit of cultural arts and live theatre. But again, after some 20 plus years of use, another up-date was needed.

Act 5. In 2003, the theatre was closed. But only temporarily. After an investment of $1.6 million the theatre was again given a new lease of life. Tiered seating for 250 people, state-of-the-art sound and lighting, airconditioning, green room, foyer, bar and an outside covered pergola were installed, constructed and now maintained. The theatre’s acting manager, David Brammah, believes the building is a

contemporary and intimate venue capable of hosting a wide range of functions beyond live theatre including; musical performances, stage shows, annual general meetings, professional seminars, weddings and private social functions. In addition to the facilities, professional services are also available. These include; catering, event marketing, staffing, production, box-office and on-line ticketing. According to Mr Brammah, post Global Financial Crisis saw a significant drop in interest for traditional theatre and a general shift in the types of arts entertainment people are now wanting. This has provided the opportunity to explore new areas to win back audiences and moves are underway to do just that.

Final Act In addition to the popular musical stage shows and solo performances, the recently completed strategic plan lists ‘new performing arts’ as a cultural and business opportunity. Burlesque, circus theatre, contemporary dance and comedy acts will

be sought to boost attendance and expand cultural entertainment for the Coffs Coast community. Another initiative that will be in place for the summer holiday season is a move back to the big screen featuring a program of art-house and classic movies following an e-cinema upgrade including; a new retractable screen, improved sound system and a Full High Definition projector.

ompetitors and support staff, officials, administrators, media, sponsors, volunteers and fans from near and far came to Coffs Coast to compete, work and play before, during and after the Rally. And millions more around the world watched the event live on their televisions, all the while exposed to some stunning Coffs Coast scenery. The enthusiastic Coffs Coast community enjoyed entertainment provided by Rally drivers and their teams, showbiz performers, sky-divers, the Red Bull stunt plane and the RAAF Roulettes. All contributed to make the 2013 Coates Hire Rally Australia event an outstanding success. Now that dust has settled, and there was a plume or two created as the Rally cars thundered through the stages and winners Sebastian Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia presented with their trophies, planning is now underway to make next year’s event bigger and better.
