Guide to the most current automation and industry 4.0’s terminologies

A big step towards understanding a specific industry is to know the used terminology. Automation and Industry 4.0 have many terminologies which are unknown or less familiar to the most. We will go through the most used terms when talking about industry 4.0 and automation in the 4IR and see what these terms mean and how they are defined. Here the second part (from M to R). Map/reduce A big data batch processing framework that breaks up a data analysis problem into pieces that are then mapped and distributed across multiple computers on the same network or cluster, or across a grid of disparate and possibly geographically separated systems. The data analytics performed on this data are then collected and combined into a distilled or “reduced” report.

Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS) Access rather than possession. Digitization has substantially changed the approach to physical possession. It is increasingly being replaced by temporary access to goods or services. The best example: music streaming. What has already become an everyday situation in many consumer segments will also revolutionize the industrial environment over the next few years. As the name suggests, “Manufacturing as a Service” will see manufacturing processes purchased as services: the machine itself does not change ownership – payment is made for the performance of the machine only. What applies to complete production systems will, in the future, also apply to individual elements within a manufacturing facility, for example to robots. On the basis of a “pay-per-use” model, it will not be the physical object itself that is purchased in conjunction with “Robotics as a Service®”, but rather its performance, such as weld spots in vehicle body production, for instance. The smart factory of the future integrates these services seamlessly into its production processes and thus has the capability of reacting to varying capacity requirements and goods flows exceedingly flexibly and efficiently while conserving resources at the same time.

Master Data Management (MDM) Master data management is a technology-enabled discipline used to consistently define and manage the critical data of an organization to provide a single point of reference ensuring the uniformity, accuracy, stewardship, semantic consistency and accountability of shared master data assets. The data that is mastered may include reference data- the set of permissible values, and the analytical data that supports company decision making. Megatrends Megatrends are powerful, transformative forces that could change the global economy, business and society. They have been changing the way we live for centuries. Customization, digitization, responsible use of natural resources and demographic changes are the megatrends that will need to be mastered in the coming decades. Metadata Often referred to as data that describes other data, metadata is structured reference data that helps to sort and identify attributes of the information it describes. In other words, it’s data created by combining personal, anonymous or pseudonymous data for multiple individuals as a group. Metadata summarizes basic information about data, which can make it easier to find, use and reuse particular instances of data. Monitoring & Stream Analytics Monitoring and stream analytics process and analyses data records continuously that are available to the smart factory from diverse sources – devices, sensors, infrastructure, etc. In real time they make comparisons with data records from the past and recognize anomalies, which can be categorized as faults with the aid of machine learning. On this basis intelligent systems can initiate immediate countermeasures and generate forecasts and recommended actions for the future. Near Field Communication Near-field communication transmits data through electromagnetic radio fields to enable two devices to communicate with each other. For data transfer to occur, both devices must contain NFC chips, as transactions take place within a very short distance (4 cm or less). Neural Network Artificial Neural Networks are models inspired by behavior of the human brain. These are used to estimate mathematical functions and facilitate different kinds of learning algorithms, allowing computer programs to recognize patterns and solve common problems in the fields of AI, machine learning, and deep learning. OT/IT Convergence The OT/IT convergence is the integration of manufacturing systems controlling physical events and processes with back-end hardware and software for conveying and processing information. Higher efficiency and reliability may be attained with such a smart grid platform combining the physical infrastructure and human interface. Platform as a Service (PaaS) Platform as a service is a complete development and deployment environment in the cloud, with resource that enable you to deliver everything from simple cloud-based apps to sophisticated, cloud-enabled enterprise applications.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) Power over Ethernet describes any of several standard or ad-hoc systems which pass electric power along with data on twisted pair Ethernet cabling. This allows a single cable to provide both data connection and electric power to devices such as wireless access points, IP cameras, and VoIP phones. Power over Wi-fi (PoWiFi) A technology that can convert the signals sent by wireless routers into DC. WiFi hotspots and routers are programmed under PoWiFi to broadcast noise when a channel is not being used to send data, thus providing a continuous stream of low-power signals that can be harvested. Predictive Analytics Predictive analytics is the use of data, statistical algorithms and machine learning techniques to identify the likelihood of future outcomes based on historical data. The goal is to go beyond knowing what has happened to provide a best assessment of what will happen in the future. Using predictive analytics, we can predict future events like when a machine might fail. Predictive Maintenance Predictive maintenance refers to the use of data-driven, proactive maintenance methods that are designed to analyze the condition of equipment and help predict when maintenance should be performed. Predictive maintenance software uses data science and predictive analytics to estimate when a piece of equipment might fail so that corrective maintenance can be scheduled before the point of failure. The goal is to schedule maintenance at the most convenient and most cost-efficient moment, allowing equipment’s lifespan to be optimized to its fullest, but before the equipment has been compromised. Prescriptive Analytics Automatically synthesizes big data, multiple disciplines of mathematical sciences and computational sciences, and business rules to make predictions and suggest decision options to take advantage of the predictions. Private Cloud The private cloud is defined as computing services offered either over the Internet or a private internal network and only to select users instead of the general public. Also called an internal or corporate cloud, private cloud computing gives businesses many of the benefits of a public cloud - including self-service, scalability, and elasticity with the additional control and customization available from dedicated resources over a computing infrastructure hosted on-premises. Product Life-Cycle Management Product lifecycle management is an information management system that can integrate data, processes, business systems and, ultimately, people in an extended enterprise. PLM software allows you to manage this information throughout the entire lifecycle of a product efficiently and cost-effectively from ideation, design and manufacture through service and disposal. Public Cloud Public cloud is an IT model where on-demand computing services and infrastructure are managed by a third-party provider and shared with multiple organizations using the public Internet. Public cloud service providers may offer cloud-based services such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), or software as a service (Saas) to users for either a monthly or pay-per-use fee, eliminating the need for users to host these services on site in their own data center.

Public Key Infrastructure Structure of hardware, software, people, processes and policies that uses digital signature technology to provide relying parties with a verifiable association between the public components of an asymmetric key pair with a specific subject. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) The use of electromagnetic or inductive coupling in the radio frequency portion of the spectrum to communicate to or from a tag through a variety of modulation and encoding schemes uniquely to read the identity of an RFQ Tag. A method to identify objects through electromagnetic waves without actual physical contact. This way, data can be gathered more easily. An object or creature is equipped with a transponder which transmits data to an electronic reader. Other than, for example, barcodes, the information can be read without a line of sight and in some cases operating distance can be over a kilometer. Real-time Analytics Dynamic analysis and reporting based on data entered into a system less than one minute before the actual time of use. Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) RAMI 4.0 combines all elements and IT components in a layer and life cycle model. RAMI 4.0 breaks down complex processes into easy-to-grasp packages, including data privacy and IT security. Reference Architectures Reference Architecture is an end-to-end architecture which has already been created for a particular domain of interest. It typically includes different Architectural Patterns, applied in different areas of its structure. There are two broad types of Reference Architectures: Industry Specific RA & Technical RA. Reliability Ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time. Repeatability A sensor’s performance in consistently reporting the same response when subjected to the same input under constant environmental conditions. Re-Shoring Available is the new cheap. Whereas in the past purchase decisions were often primarily made on the basis of the lowest price, in the future it will be the product that is available most quickly and with a high level of customization that will be at the top of consumers’ shopping lists. This necessitates new manufacturing and marketing methods and structures that will only become possible as a result of networked production in smart factories. Short distances will be an important factor in achieving fast availability. Due to the high degree of automation, production steps that are currently outsourced to low-wage countries can be repatriated to high-wage countries in a process known as “reshoring”. Recycling and Upcycling through Maris Extruders

Established near Turin in 1962 to manufacture extruders and dies for pipes and profiles, Maris quickly became a leading player in the early development of nascent technologies. Focused on the production of co-rotating twin-screw extruders for various application, they have recently patented a continuous process for rubber devulcanisation. In this case, the vulcanised rubbers are recycled using a continuous

system, allowing them to be reused (in proportions ranging from 15% to 50%) in new formulations for the same original application. What is more, the percentage of devulcanised material in the compound can be further increased to obtain different formulations. In this regard, the devulcanisation process can also be applied to post-consumer materials, since it involves careful material selection, identification and treatment


steps. We are referring to the large volumes of endof-life tyres (ELTs) that can certainly consider a very useful “secondary raw material”. Still in application terms, recycling - or better - upcycling, is a constantly evolving and growing sector. Maris’s response to the need to recycle plastic materials (polyolefins, PVC, PET and also expanded materials) with high contamination and high moisture content is Evorec Plastic Plus. This combination of two technologies - a single screw extruder and a corotating twin screw extruder - makes it possible to recycle very critical materials with a single extrusion system. Just to summarize the features of this tandem solution, it has been now reached a point at which it is possible to fully exploit the potential of both the single screw extruder and the corotating twin-screw extruder, in a single machine and in a single step. In other words, by combining two specific, complementary expressions of our know-how, it is possible to feed non-free-flowing materials, carry out double filtration, obtain highly homogeneous materials, and introduce additives/fillers into the recycled polymer. It is also possible to process materials with a high moisture content and a very high level of contamination; this would not be possible with a twin screw extruder alone, but thanks to this combination, it is now feasible. Regarding the upcycling example described in this article, figure 1 comes to our aid, showing the five

phases of the single screw extruder: 1) grinding, dehumidification, storage; 2) feeding; 3) melting; 4) first degassing; 5) first filtration. After these operations, the post-industrial or post-consumer waste is ready to be fed continuously towards the corotating twin screw extruder. Figure 1 also lists the phases of this second step: 6) homogenization; 7) second degassing; 8) side feeding of polymers, fillers or additives; 9) third degassing; 10) second filtration and granulation/palletizing.

New CirculenRenew polymers for primary pharmaceutical packaging made by Röchling

Rotterdam – August, 30 2022 – LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB), a leader in the global chemical industry, together with Röchling Medical, part of Röchling Group, known for producing high quality, secure medication packaging, have announced a step forward towards their ambition to advance the circular economy. The companies created eye drop containers made by Röchling Medical using CirculenRenew polymers. LyondellBasell CirculenRenew polymers offer a variety of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) grades that are equivalent to virgin resin quality. LyondellBasell CirculenRenew grades support the use of renewable feedstocks from bio-based sources that are not in competition with food sources. “We are very proud to work with Röchling Medical on this project. It’s the first time we are supplying CirculenRenew grades for a primary pharmaceutical packaging application. This is an important milestone for us which also supports our ambitious goal of producing and marketing 2 million metric tons of recycled and renewable-based polymers by 2030,” says Mathieu Lecomte, marketing manager at LyondellBasell. LyondellBasell and Röchling have collaborated closely to find the right grade for Röchling’s eye drop containers. After several trials, the project team has chosen a Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) not only because of its high purity, which is necessary for pharmaceutical applications, but also because it was ideal for use in blow molding. “In such a highly regulated environment as the pharmaceutical industry, driving change towards more sustainable solutions for primary packaging is a challenge,” says Grit Pasche, Röchling Group’s global director quality & regulatory affairs. “Therefore, CirculenRenew was the right choice for us. These renewable-based polymers offer the same properties as fossil-based alternatives in terms of product performance.” This advancement is possible via the principle of mass balancing. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification provides traceability of the renewable content along the supply chain and verifies that the mass balance accounting follows predefined and transparent rules. Customers can use these certificates to verify compliance with sustainability and traceability requirements. As part of an ISCC Plus certified supply chain, pharma customers are able to actively contribute to promoting sustainability and conserving resources, ultimately reducing the CO2 footprint of their products. This recent project illustrates how value chain collaboration can lead to innovative solutions with sustainability goals in mind. Together, LyondellBasell and Röchling are helping to unlock the circular potential of plastics.

Notice Regarding Sustainability-Linked Loan Agreement

Tokyo – August 24, 2022 – DIC Corporation announced today that it has entered into a sustainability-linked loan (SLL) agreement with The Norinchukin Bank. This is DIC’s second SSL agreement with the bank and comes two months after its first, in June 2022. An SLL is a loan that encourages borrowers to set ambitious sustainability performance targets (SPTs) that reflect their management strategies and incentivizes them to work toward those SPTs by linking loan conditions to degree of achievement, thereby supporting business activities and growth that are both environmentally and socially sustainable. DIC has positioned sustainability, including environmental issues, as a principle management priority, and is actively working to expand its portfolio of products and services that contribute to decarbonization with the goal of playing a pivotal role in lowering CO2 emissions across markets and society. In DIC NET ZERO 2050, published in June 2021, and in its DIC Vision 2030 long-term management plan, announced in February 2022, the DIC Group set forth a target for reducing CO2 emissions by 50% from the fiscal year 2013 level by fiscal year 2030, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality—net zero CO2 emissions—by fiscal year 2050, thereby clarifying its commitment to helping realize decarbonization. Against this backdrop, DIC’s decision to enter into a second SLL agreement was taken with the objective of using proceeds to further advance its sustainability strategy. Having redefined its purpose as “Dedicated to sustaining all life,” The Norinchukin Bank works together with its stakeholders to foster the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries and create a prosperous future for food and lifestyles, thereby contributing to a sustainable global environment. The bank promotes a variety of sustainable management initiatives and has committed to providing sustainable finance in the amount of ¥10 trillion by 2030 as one of its medium- to long-term goals announced in May 2021. Seeing affinity with the philosophy of the DIC Group’s sustainability strategy, the bank once again agreed to extend an SLL to DIC based on its assessment that this loan will help resolve climate change–related issues, including by lowering CO2 emissions. In the 2022 edition of its integrated report (DIC Report 2022), DIC redefined one of its four priority materiality themes, “response to climate change,” as “contribution to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.” The Company is advancing various initiatives aimed at reducing emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 50% from the fiscal year 2013 level by fiscal year 2030. This target has been selected as the SPT for this SLL. DIC has obtained a third-party opinion from the Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR) regarding the loan’s conformity with the Sustainability-Linked Loan Principles, as well as the rationality of the SPT chosen. This opinion affirmed that the SPT is both meaningful and ambitious, and from that perspective that the loan adheres to the aforementioned principles. Going forward, DIC will continue working to help ensure the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainability Goals (SDGs), a key global initiative, by addressing a variety of related themes and with the aim of evolving as a unique global company that is trusted by society.

plants of plastic recycling, above all post-consumer, mixed and heterogeneous waste, of primary interest is the Promeco Chemical Recycling plant, that allows the production of hydrocarbon feedstocks as naphtha which are materials that the chemical industry can reuse to re-manufacture new plastic materials saving fossil resources. This process uses the mixed plastic waste that are difficult to recycle through the usual mechanical recycling methods. This process has been defined as the “missing gap” among the 360° plastic recycle. This solution has been developed over 10 years ago by Promeco and the plants have been sold in Singapore and it is based on the thought that plastic is not a material to be demonized. Of high interest, is the 3rd plant for fishing nets (PA6) recycling that is currently under installation in Ljubliana, Slovenia for a leading Italian group. This line includes the high-efficient combination of the well-known Densifier Promeco Extruder System “PES” with a special single shaft extruder: they are directly connected to optimize the energy consumption and degassing, maximizing the production. A continuous melt filter can also be added to remove all the impurities from the output product. This special combination, called combo, is also well known and used for a better degassing of special inked plastics or deodorizing of the post-consumer plastics. Among the latest environment friendly processing lines in polymers processing, we must mention the DRY CLEANING OF PLASTICS system that has been developed in order to avoid water consumption and to cut down the investment and maintenance costs: this is a sustainable solution to produce pellet

Designing sustainable plastics for a Circular Economy

Worldwide we are facing big challenges like climate change, population growth that need strong, effective and shared policies, strategies and action plan. These challenges require embracing Circular Economy as a guiding light. Circular economy involves many aspects, but we will be focused on the role of plastics. Our society, economy and environment are all negatively affected by the way plastics are currently designed, produced, used and discarded. Plastics production, use and disposal are responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in the natural environment, particularly in drinking water and the oceans. The amount of plastic litter is growing, hurting marine ecosystems, biodiversity and potentially human health. We must rethink the way we design, produce and use plastic on a circular economy based. A circular economy is restorative and regenerative, and it involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In the case of plastic, this means simultaneously keeping the value of plastics in the economy, without leakage into the natural environment.

Designing sustainable products While up to 80% of products’ environmental impacts are determined at the design phase, the linear pattern of “take-make-use-dispose” does not provide producers with enough incentives to make their products more circular. Many products break down too quickly, cannot be easily reused, repaired or recycled, and many are made for single use only. It has been calculated that design improvements could halve the cost of recycling plastic packaging waste.

An interesting consideration about designing sustainable plastic products has been made by Shanar Tabrizi on its position paper ‘’Designing for real recycling, not plastic lock-in’’: in order for plastic products to be recyclable, they need to be designed in line with a certain set of standards and technical requirements. As concerns differ greatly between specific product types and materials, design-for-recycling standards are needed for each product or material group rather than having broad overall principles that cannot be practically applied. Designing for recycling means designing with an end-market in mind and demands an integrated approach where collaboration is key. While design principles often need to be coupled with other parameters such as product safety, shelf life or branding, an important key principle is using fewer types of plastics, as different plastics need to be recycled separately. The author continues outlining interesting common design considerations to take into account when designing plastics for recycling. These considerations are: • Separability of components • Compatibility of materials and material mix • Choice of materials • Toxicity of materials and the need to phase out substances of concern • Form, size and thickness • Use of additives, fillers and colorants (and their toxicity) • Product residues (how easy the product is to empty of its content) • Barriers and coatings • Design of labelling and sleeves (and adhesives used) • Use of printing and suitability (non-metallic etc.) or toxicity of inks

In line with the above principals is the Design Book published by RecyClass with the goal of providing a practical guide that clarifies the definition of recyclability and highlights key considerations for designing both rigid and flexible packaging for recycling with maximum output quality as the priority. When it comes to policies and strategies, the European Union has ambitious goals outlined in the Circular Economy Action Plan and Plastics Strategy. But as stated in the above-mentioned Position Paper: while waste prevention and reuse efforts must be prioritized, we cannot achieve a circular economy without closing this huge gap between recyclability potential, actual collection and sorting, and final recycling’’. All these steps have to deal with a proper design of plastic products. And it seems the EU commission have well understood the importance of a proper design of plastic products. In fact, with the Plastics Strategy the Commission aims to encourage and support product design choices which take into account the entire life cycle of plastics and plastic products, making them more durable, reusable and easily recyclable. The commission action plan will also include: - Supporting design and production of recyclable plastics and products; - Investing in collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure; - Improving the traceability of materials and substances to boost recycling rates and ensure clean, safe material cycles; - Developing quality standards for sorted plastic waste and recycled plastics; - Developing Green Public Procurement criteria on integrating recycled content; - Financially supporting research and development of innovative projects to help businesses in their efforts to increase recycling.

Conclusion We need to stop thinking of plastic as ‘waste,’ but as a renewable resource that needs to be disposed of correctly. A circular economy for plastics offers a promising vision for stemming the tide of plastic waste, but converting this aspiration into a fully functioning, closed-loop system will require greater cooperation from all key actors in the value chain. We need to support the design, development and delivery of policies to make our use of plastics more sustainable, enabling our societies and economies to reap the benefits of plastics, while avoiding associated impacts to the environment, health and to the economy.

The Irgatec® CR technology enables the creation of advanced meltblown nonwoven materials which fulfill the increasing requirements defined for both personal hygiene and filter applications. With Irgatec® CR 25, BASF introduces a solution targeting PP meltblown modification, which is of high interest for filtration materials. The solution can be implemented directly by the meltblown producers without additional investment in their existing line, thus enabling a faster-to-market solution for specialty PP nonwoven products. Additives are key enablers for circular plastics and to drive innovation for recyclability. The recently launched IrgaCycle range includes additives solutions that are specifically designed to improve the properties of mechanically recycled plastics for different target industries. Innovative technology makes flexible packaging recyclable

• Technology from Covestro weakens the bond strength of PU adhesives • Laminated films in multilayer packaging can be separated after use • The individual materials can be recycled later September 15, 2022 – They are indispensable in modern everyday life: Flexible packaging made from several layers of film enables the hygienic and safe storage of many foods. However, the versatile packaging has a problem: sustainable disposal. After use, the bonded films in the material mix are difficult to separate from one another - and that is why such flexible packaging is unfortunately only partially recyclable. Covestro has identified the problem - and has developed a process for recycling companies and packaging manufacturers to address this problem: In the case of multi-layer film packages laminated with polyurethane (PU) adhesive, the respective materials can be separated from one another again thanks to the new technology. The team will now present the development at the K 2022 trade fair from 19 to 26 October in Düsseldorf. In the process, a special separation agent specifically weakens the bond strength of the PU adhesive. Since the separation agent consists of natural ingredients and water, it is also very sustainable. For packaging manufacturers and recyclers, the process offers a major advantage: "Our know-how helps them to make better use of the residual value of their packaging and thus makes more materials available to the recycling industry," says Thomas Fait. The New Business Development Manager for Adhesives at Covestro has led the development of the technology on a laboratory scale. "With projects like this, we contribute to achieve our corporate vision: to make the circular economy a reality. For this purpose, we work with partners from a wide variety of fields and industries and are always looking for ways how our products and technologies can help other companies become circular." 50 years of KÜNDIG CONTROL SYSTEMS - a success story: Kündig Control Systems (KCS) is a division of the family-owned company Hch. Kündig & Cie. AG (HKC) specializing in thin plastic film measuring and control devices. Since its inception in 1972, the KCS team has steadily climbed its way to being the world leader in the blown film industry. It was during the 1971 International Textile Machinery Exhibition (ITMA) in Paris, that it became apparent that the golden years of Switzerland’s powerful textile

industry would soon be over. Textile machinery was the parent company’s core business and the exhibition validated a HKC decision to search for an additional business avenue, a business avenue needed to ensure the company’s future. Earlier in 1970, HKC hired a technical salesman and entrusted him with the task of setting up a trading department for machines and equipment outside of HKC’s traditional clientele. Instead of textiles, the focus shifted to include thin plastic films. It proved to be the right decision, even though, in retrospect, it


was a very ambitious and demanding choice. The new KCS division got its first opportunity to solve a plastics industry problem during a spontaneous visit to the former Vinora company located in RapperswilJona, Switzerland. Vinora needed a new width control device for blown film extrusion lines to replace the unsuitable devices then available from the Meiners company. KCS decided this was a challenge they would tackle with the added assistance from a young electrical engineer. The first width control device was sold in 1972, thus establishing KCS’s foundation for the new division, which is celebrating its anniversary today. KCS exhibited for the first time at K 1979 in Dusseldorf. The interest in width controls and now, film thickness gauges, was significant. Since KCS did not want to develop and manufacture thickness gauges internally, they made a cooperation agreement with the Winzen company of Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. As time went on, the quality requirements of Europe’s film industry began to exceed the capabilities of the sensors procured from the USA. Therefore, the next new challenge was the KCS’s decision to develop their own capacitive thickness gauge. In 1987, the now infamous K-100 film thickness gauge was fully developed and shortly thereafter was sold to all major blown film line manufacturers and end users in Europe and North America. Today, the high quality KCS measurement and control devices of older and newer generations have been in use for years on all continents and their functional efficiency is guaranteed by an efficient customer service department. Since these beginnings, KCS has continued to develop

performance improvements in all its products, testing new scientific findings and developing new technologies. KCS’s guiding principal is to offer the world’s most innovative measuring and control equipment for the production of very thin, high quality plastic films - which reduce raw material usage. Clearly, an investment in equipment from KCS is clearly both an economic and ecological decision. At this year’s K show, as a world premiere, KCS presents the 9th generation of width measurement and control. For the first time, the FE-9 width measurement uses a new, innovative technology for even more precise foil edge detection. Detailed explanations of this technology are available at booth C51 in Hall 10. As with its predecessor, the FE-9 width measurement system consists of two half-beams in three different sizes, which can be connected to each other at different positions. With only a few different modules, this system enables width measurement of film webs between 10 and over 4000 millimeters. [Picture FE-9] The CUFE-9 operator console, which is also new, combines 50 years of experience in width control technology with state-of-the-art technology. If the CUFE-9 is integrated into the company network, the system can be completely controlled remotely via a web browser. In addition, width measuring instruments from the 6th generation introduced in 1985 can be connected to the CUFE-9. The online film thickness gauge K-XRAY Rotomat KT 3G based on X-ray technology, which was introduced at the last K trade show, is now an established device on the global market. On several occasions, thickness gauges based on a gamma solid-state radiator have

also been replaced by a K-XRAY sensor. As a result, thin foils can be measured much more precisely, which, in combination with profile control, leads to decisively tighter cross-profile tolerances. Valtorta Battaggion Group S.r.l. started its business in 1926 under the name of Valtorta Costruzioni Meccaniche. for all liquid and pasty products, characterized by low to medium viscosity. The combination of the two companies has therefore boosted the already wide product range of the Battaggion Group, granting a deeper market penetration in the mixing technology. Valtorta is nowadays in the position to provide turbomixing plants for PVC production, single coolers, feeding and dosing lines (both mechanical and pneumatic type ), dispersers and vertical mixers for solutions (plastisol, PU, varnishes, paints, etc.), horizontal mixers (single or two-stages type both cooled and heated), homogenizing and filtration units, conical mixers for powder, high speed horizontal mixers, as well as special plants. During the last decades the company built a great experience not only in the manufacturing of standalone machines but in their integration into complete production plants too. More and more the same customers which require Valtorta machines for mixing processes, also require that these same machines become one of the many sections which compose their production line. This means that most of the Valtorta machines need to be interfaced with upstream feeding systems, as well as with downstream systems for the movement of the mixed product. It is in this stage that all the experiences and the synergies allowed by the different companies which compose the Battaggion Group can make the difference.

The deep knowledge of the materials to be processed, their initial and final properties as well as the customers’ final expected results are essential for us to grant complete systems which must be able to integrate today’s state of the art of the mixing technology. It is with this spirit that during the whole course of management of a complete plant project, an open and professional exchange of opinions with our customers becomes the basis for the Valtorta’s and the Battaggion Group’s technical staff to head towards a feasibility study first and towards the design, the construction, the installation and the successful startup. VALTORTA’S BIGGEST PROJECTS The ME mixers are the Valtorta horizontal slow speed mixers, to be used mainly for those processes which require a not aggressive slow mixing action: they can provide a high quality of the compound, even when the product to be processed is fragile or it must keep unchanged specific physical characteristics. Main applications are the mixing of TPR, PVC, powders or dry granules but, if necessary, also powders and low viscosity pastes, added with liquid components. In 2002 Valtorta manufactured the biggest ME ever assembled in the facility: the 30.000 liters bowl horizontal slow speed mixer. The project was challenging, but Valtorta demonstrated to be capable of accomplishing the final task, as always, which is to supply high performance plants.

At the time the customer purchased two of these machines at once. The two ME 30.000 were designed to homogenise granules or powders in the petrochemical industry. Each one of the two machines had a thermally conditioned, 30.000 liters bowl made of stainless steel and the action of a continuous ribbon blender driven by a 110 kW electrical motor granted high mixing performances. The discharge of the mixed product was done by a pneumatically driven shutter valve installed on the bottom of the bowl.

The TSOR are the most efficient combination of machines for the PVC mixing and preparation for the extrusion line. The output rhythm is the highest of all these various systems, this choice demands that the manufacturing materials and equipment should be the best and most suitable to the customers’ needs. In 2020 Valtorta manufactured a 2.000 liters TS with 6.000 liters OR: the biggest TSOR ever assembled by the company. Made by stainless steel AISI 304 and driven by 450 and 75 Kw motors, this

Moving on Up: Industrial Technology Solves Expensive Warehouse Space Constraints By Mark Stevenson

Prices are up. Prices for labor are up. Prices for raw materials are up. Prices for warehouse space is up. Labor is in short supply. It is a constant lament. In this chorus of complaints rests the answer: Go up! Warehouse space, if available is too expensive, that is unless space utilization can increase 10 – 30% by simply adding elevation of storage capacity. Before going up, feet on the ground, there is a reason 3PLs (third-party logistics), distribution centers, warehouses, and manufacturing work cells have not considered adding a layer of shelving, racking, and conveyance. The limitation of the reach trucks needed to strategically “go up” have prohibited getting access to the extra level of mezzanine capacity. This constraint has been solved with robotics and industrial technology.

Laura Ross, a content creator for Thomas for Industry argued the cost of warehousing in the U.S. is skyrocketing. She cited a report released at the end of 2021 by real-estate firm CBRE Group Inc. Results found that the rental rates on expiring multi-year warehouse leases are increasing at a rapid rate. The cost of renting an industrial property has increased an average of 25% compared to the rates paid at the end of five-year contracts. John Morris, industrial and logistics lead at CBRE, commented that the company has never seen rent increases this high. Following the outbreak of COVID-19, consumer behavior transformed. The UN’s trade and development experts (UNCTAD) revealed that the eCommerce sector saw a dramatic rise in its share of all retail sales — from 16% to 19% in 2020. In May 2021, it was reported that global eCommerce had risen to $26.7 trillion. The U.S. alone saw $105 billion added to the economy from eCommerce. CBRE demonstrated that $1 billion in incremental eCommerce sales results in 1.25 million square feet of warehouse space demand. Space solutions: getting more from existing space using very narrow aisles (VNA) and Reach Trucks If the warehouse aisles are narrower, more rows of racks and shelves can be placed in the same square footage. Sounds reasonable as long as the lift trucks can navigate the new tighter turning radius. Companies have to weigh the efficacy of a new fleet of lift trucks, preferably AGVs (automated guide vehicles) to avoid the short supply of drivers in the market. There is wide acceptance of AGVs and when weighing the labor and space cost-savings, a rapid ROI is now possible in one year or less (versus two or three years as reported back in 2018).

The second solution, and it sounds obvious, go up one mezzanine level and capture a significant amount (up to 30%) of storage space capacity. Countless pictures of distribution centers show inventory stored on the first and second level racks, even some on level three. Frequently, if a fourth level is available, it is poorly utilized, and a fifth level mezzanine is out of the question.

Unconventional storage and a myth that the facility is not built for typical automation solutions are some of the false notions for brownfield warehouse managers to resist newer technologies. Thanks to VNAs and robotic elevation capacity, this myth has been fully debunked. Standard racking no longer works and fails the warehouse optimization test Because there is an ever-increasing demand for warehouse space, standard racking no longer works. warehouse managers face a significant challenge when stacking and stocking loads while efforting to maximize storage space. (This is especially true in regions where the cost per square meter/foot is high.) The most common form of stacking is standard racking. This type of rack is used when there is a relatively higher number of pallets per SKU and requires complete access to each individual pallet face. This is compared to block stacking, which can be configured in a number of ways, and managed by a WMS (warehouse management system). Lower elevations in warehouses impact storage density and while the racking operations can be complex, manually operated fork truck operators must be especially careful when storing and retrieving pallets at greater heights. This takes a toll on operational efficiency. The new breed of reach truck robots can be deployed to handle the task of storing and retrieving pallets from the racks with high precision and efficiency.

With access to higher racking levels (up to 55 feet), pallets of finished goods can be stored prior to shipping. Robots using the latest 3D technology means pick and drop reliability is available even at the highest elevations. Starting at level three, mobile robots actually provide faster cycle times and higher throughput than manual forklifts. High reach solutions are particularly well-suited for existing (brownfield) facilities since they can operate where other vehicles cannot. Best-in-class reach solutions operate in aisles as narrow as 6‘9” at elevations up to 36’. Similarly, industry leaders with VNA solutions operate with precision at elevations up 55’, at throughputs comparable to much more expensive AS/RS solutions. Most importantly, these robotics solutions provide the same level of speed and reliability at every elevation as they do at ground level. This translates directly into increased volumes at the same operating costs. Supply chain and operations managers continuously challenged The unavoidable rising labor costs and market dynamics are directly proportionate to the loss of expertise in the warehouse. The bulk of time spent by valuable operators are sadly used performing nonvalue added tasks like pallet movements. Thanks to these new robotic solutions, neither automation nor elevation are scary.

Sasol and ITOCHU announcing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on green hydrogen and ammonia

Johannesburg - September 2, 2022 – Sasol and ITOCHU Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly study and develop the market and supply chain for green ammonia with a focus on its use as bunkering fuel and for power generation. The parties will also evaluate ITOCHU’s potential involvement and participation in Sasol’s green ammonia export-orientated project(s), including product offtake as well as financial support from Japan for studies and grants relating to green ammonia projects in South Africa. The MoU has been signed during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) in Tunisia, which is a forum to advance Japan-Africa sustainable development on the continent. MUFG Bank Ltd, one of the largest Financial Institutions in the world, and a market leader in sustainable financing solutions, witnessed the signing of the MoU. Green ammonia is produced from green hydrogen, which in turn is produced from renewable electricity (solar and wind) via an electrolysis process. It is a key enabler to achieving net-zero in manufacturing fertilizers, in the marine sector where it can be used as a zero-carbon bunkering fuel, and for co-firing in thermal power generation. Green ammonia is an excellent energy carrier especially over long-distances and can be easily transported. The product can also be “cracked” back to hydrogen gas for further applications. Sasol is advancing a number of green hydrogen studies and projects in South Africa, such as in Boegoebaai in the Northern Cape province, that include green ammonia production at scale for export. Given South Africa’s excellent solar, wind and precious metals resources, the country is poised to become a global hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia and sustainable aviation fuels. Hydrogen and ammonia play an important role in the Japanese Green Growth Strategy and are positioned as "new resources" with significant potential to reduce the country's reliance on carbon-intensive fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. Japan is expected to be a large importer of green ammonia in the future. Sasol Executive Vice President: Energy Business, Priscillah Mabelane, said that Sasol believes that strategic partnerships and collaboration are the key to develop large scale green hydrogen projects, and that this emerging sector can play an important role in enabling a just energy transition in South Africa. “Sasol is excited about our collaboration with ITOCHU to unlock South Africa’s significant potential as a large-scale producer of green hydrogen and ammonia. This marks yet another milestone in our ambition to lead the energy transition in South Africa through decarbonization, while stimulating industrial development.” ITOCHU has been strengthening initiatives for the establishment of production and supply chains for low-carbon ammonia, the development of ammonia-fueled ships and establishment of an international value chain for ammonia as a fuel in the marine sector and its use for fertilizer-related applications as well as in the power-generation sector. Using the MoU as a platform, ITOCHU, together with Sasol, will jointly study supply chains and markets for green ammonia, and assess other partnership models related to green hydrogen and ammonia production and exports from South Africa. Dangote Petrochemical Plant to Position Nigeria as Polypropylene Hub in Africa

Lagos - The Dangote’s $2 billion Petrochemical Plant located at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State when fully operational will position Nigeria as one of Africa’s largest petrochemicals hubs and boost non-oil export earnings for the country, according to the Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote. The 900,000 metric tonnes per annum capacity Plant, which is being built alongside the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery will produce polypropylene strategically positioned to cater to the growing plastic processing downstream industries; not only in Africa but also in other parts of the world. Dangote who made this disclosure at 2022 Zenith Bank International Trade Seminar on Non-oil Export recently in Lagos, said the refinery and petrochemical projects will ensure petroleum products’ sufficiency and security for Nigeria. He emphasized the need for government to unlock the potential of petrochemical export by completing the OB3 pipeline to make gas available to manufacturers. “There is need to prioritise financing gas infrastructure, gas allocation to the domestic market and adjustment of fiscal framework to make supply of gas to domestic market attractive for oil companies,” he added. Dangote disclosed that the refinery reputed to be the largest single train greenfield petroleum refinery in the world is at an advanced stage of completion and that on completion, it is expected to export more than 8 million tons of Petroleum products annually after meeting domestic consumption, while about 900,000 tons of polypropylene is also expected from the petrochemical plant. The business mogul revealed that the recently commissioned 3m mtpa Fertilizer Plant has “commenced export to India, North America and Latin America. At steady state, will export two million tons per annum after meeting domestic consumption.” He explained that the Dangote Fertiliser regarded as the second largest urea fertilizer plant in the world is leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves as raw material for the production of Urea. Stressing on the need for Nigeria to encourage non-oil export, Dangote said that Nigeria’s non-oil export is quite low compared to other African top oil producers. “This exposes the economy to oil price and production risks. Export opportunities abound in Nigeria but there are two main routes import substitution and export-oriented industries. Import substitution is ideal for economies like Nigeria which has a large domestic market and a huge import bill”, he added. Dangote said that investors can build industries, which initially target the domestic market, then subsequently target export markets as they build scale and competitiveness. He then urged the Federal Government to build on the country’s competitive advantage to develop industries that are primarily geared toward export. “Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in Bonny is a good example of an export-oriented investment (though would be good to get a model where such revenues are sold in I&E window”, adding that some countries have gone a step further to create special economic zones to achieve this objective. In his goodwill message, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele described the theme of the seminar “Unlocking Opportunities in Nigeria’s Non-Oil Export Business” as timely and appropriate. African Energy Chamber Urges U.S. to Lift South Sudan Oil Sanctions

September 8, 2022- by NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, African Energy Chamber Four years have passed since the U.S. imposed sanctions on South Sudan’s oil industry. The goal had been to prevent oil money from funding the civil war that had been raging since 2013. By curtailing the ability of businesses and organizations to provide revenue for the South Sudanese government, U.S. officials reasoned, they could pressure President Salva Kiir to end the conflict plaguing his country. Whether or not you believe the sanctions contributed to peace, the war has indeed ended. Government leaders signed a peace deal in 2018 and formed a unified government in 2020. Why, then, do sanctions that were intended to draw the war to a close remain in place? At this point, what was initially meant for good is now doing harm. The sanctions are hindering foreign investment in South Sudan oil and gas projects and, because of that, preventing the country from harnessing its natural resources (3.5 billion barrels of proven oil reserves) on behalf of its people. The sanctions are making it needlessly difficult for South Sudan to use oil and gas to foster economic growth, create jobs and business opportunities, build capacity, and — particularly important — develop gas-to-power programs capable of minimizing the country’s extensive energy poverty. I have no doubt that the U.S. imposed sanctions on South Sudan’s energy industry with the people of South Sudan in mind. Their objective was to help free them from violence and protect lives. Now, the African Energy Chamber is calling upon U.S. officials to make another decision with the South Sudanese in mind: Lift the sanctions. Time to Release the Chokehold The U.S. sanction on South Sudanese oil and gas production has focused on 15 businesses and government units, ranging from international and local oil companies operating in South Sudan to the South Sudan Ministry of Petroleum and Nile Petroleum Corporation (Nilepet), South Sudan’s national oil and gas company. Each was added to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) “Entity List,” a compilation of foreign businesses, organizations, and individuals “believed to be involved, or to pose a significant risk of being or becoming involved, in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States.” As a result, oil and gas exploration in South Sudan has become considerably more challenging. If a company, government, organization, or individual wants to export or reexport specific items (oil) from an entity on the list, they must first convince the U.S. government to let them proceed by getting a special license. Violating these requirements could result in criminal or civil proceedings, denial of export privileges, and possibly even being added to the Entity List as well. As you might expect, oil and gas activity in South Sudan has been limited. Investments in oil and gas projects have decreased, and the sanctions have dampened interest in the country’s first licensing round. The 14-block round was announced in 2021 and continues until 2023. While this opportunity is far from over, as of yet, it is not seeing the level of interest the ministry of petroleum is hoping for. CONTINUED AT PAGE

I’m not saying South Sudan’s oil and gas industry has come to a standstill. The country produces approximately 150,000 to 170,000 barrels per day, but that is far from enough to meet the government’s budgetary needs or realize much-needed economic growth. South Sudan needs more investment and activity to truly capitalize on its oil and gas reserves. Sanctions Are Making Resolving Energy Poverty Harder The U.S. sanctions also serve as an obstacle to the production of natural gas in South Sudan, which could be used to help alleviate energy poverty. South Sudan has one of the lowest electrification rates in the world: As of 2020, only 1% of the country’s 12.5 million people had access to electricity. Even those connected to the grid must cope with frequent blackouts and load shedding. Gas-to-power projects could make a tremendous difference in South Sudan. But without oil and gas revenue, building gas-fired power plants is extremely difficult. Currently, the country is not producing natural gas for export or domestic use. Sanctions Are Slowing the Move to Renewables Some may argue that South Sudan will be better off without an oil and gas industry, and that the country should simply focus on renewable energy projects like solar, wind, and hydrogen. Renewables do offer promise for South Sudan, but how in the world will South Sudan pay the billions of dollars necessary to develop the necessary infrastructure without a healthy economy? And without the revenue, jobs, capacity building, and business opportunities that come from a thriving energy industry, how exactly is South Sudan going to rebuild its economy in the short term? Don’t get me wrong: I’m all for renewable energy. But, as I’ve said repeatedly, oil and gas production will play a vital role in transitioning African countries like South Sudan to renewables. Natural gas in particular can be monetized to generate revenue and can serve as a feedstock for chemical and fertilizer manufacturing, creating even more opportunity and revenue. South Sudan can develop a healthy energy industry that includes oil, gas, and renewables, but U.S. sanctions will make that task much more time-consuming and difficult. Further Complications I also urge the U.S. to consider who will be capitalizing on South Sudan’s petroleum resources if the Department of Commerce continues to discourage investors from exploration and production there. The most likely candidates are governments and companies that aren’t concerned about the United States’ Entity list — or are already on it. China is already a major player in South Sudan, while Russia and the South Sudan Petroleum Ministry have been discussing the possibility of working together. China’s presence in the region dates back to 1995 — before South Sudan became independent — when the Second Sudanese Civil War was underway. The U.S. had imposed economic sanctions on Sudan in response to accusations of war crimes, but they did little to stop China from capitalizing on Sudan’s oil. Fast forward to today: China National Petroleum is one of the major stakeholders in Dar Petroleum Operating Company, a consortium of oil companies that continues to produce oil in South Sudan, despite being added to the U.S. Entity List. There is no reason to believe that China will be leaving South Sudan anytime soon. And then there’s Russia. South Sudan already has made it clear that it’s interested in working with Russia to help develop its oil, natural gas, and refining industries. During a 2020 visit to Russia, Awut Deng Acuil, then South Sudan’s minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss areas of potential cooperation. We have not seen Russia assume a larger role in South Sudan yet, but the door remains open.

My question to the U.S. is, do you want to create a future where China and Russia remain the primary foreign investors in South Sudan’s energy industry? Wouldn’t it be better to allow strong, stable western countries into the mix? So Much to Offer It is frustrating to see South Sudan’s energy industry struggling to build momentum, especially when you consider its promise. That potential will be showcased during South Sudan Oil & Power (SSOP) 2022, “The Gateway to East African Energy.” The conference, set for Sept. 13-14 in Juba, is being organized by Energy Capital & Power, an Africa-focused investment platform for the energy sector, in partnership with the South Sudan Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Energy and Dams, and Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. The African Energy Chamber is proud to be an event sponsor. Energy Capital & Power’s Senior Director, James Chester, recently urged governments and countries to consider what South Sudan has to offer. “South Sudan is not just making the licenses available, it has built its own data facility in Juba and has purchased its own aircraft to undertake aero gravity surveys of the country,” Chester said. “With the majority of South Sudan under explored and producing areas to explore further, the government knows it has high potential assets to market to oil and gas companies—but that data is critical. Until last year, South Sudan did not control its own industry and exploration data. It now has world class facilities.” Chester added that South Sudan’s location — bridging the Nile Basin and Rift Valley areas makes it a logical hub for exploration in an oil-rich region spanning from Egypt through Sudan to Uganda, Kenya, and beyond. I only hope that the barriers to investing in South Sudan’s oil and gas industry don’t prevent it from realizing this potential. To be fair, U.S. sanctions are not the only challenge facing South Sudan. The country’s future will be bleak without long-term stability, good governance, and transparency. But South Sudan must also have a healthy, growing economy and reliable electricity if it is going to offer its people a better future. When approached strategically, oil and gas production can make that happen in South Sudan. It can spur growth, create economic opportunities, and help alleviate energy poverty. But only if the U.S. will step out of the way.

process automatically a wide range of materials, such as solid urban waste, bulky waste, plastics, wood, paper/cardboard, and more. The DRM475 has a demountable or self-propelled tracked structure. Each rotor features a central cylindrical shaft on which the blades are welded. The central part that is placed under the blades has two functions: it determines the size of the output material (based on its distance from the blades), and


it prevents non-crushable materials from passing between the blades, damaging the conveyor belt. The DRM650 Self-Propelled Shredder is a tracked, versatile machine with a hydraulic unit, equipped with a slow rotating double shaft. The double rotor is combined with interchangeable tools and with the application of a selection screen, which allows obtaining a constant and controlled size of the output material. The rotating plates can be quickly and easily replaced, in case of breakage, by means of a single-bolt quick coupling.

Maximum Efficiency With Minimum Maintenance Specifically designed for the expulsion of nonshredding materials, the DRM650 and DRM475 are equipped with a shock interception system that stops the rotors in case of intrusion of non-shreddable material, minimizing the damage to the cutting edges. Both machines are equipped with a hopper, a shredding chamber, an extraction belt with adjustable inclination, and an iron removal system mounted on the output belt of the shredded material.

THE MOVEMENT The DRM475 features a demountable structure, that facilitates movement by a truck equipped with a demountable hook. Additionally, thanks to the hydraulic lowering wheels, the DRM475 is easy to move around the production area. The crawler makes the DRM650 “self-propelled” by means of a diesel engine, and places this shredder at the top of the Camec range. This new concept of “mobility”, brings the machine close to the material, and no longer the material to the machine. Furthermore, in compliance with the recent European exhaust gas regulations, our shredders only feature Stage V engines compliant with the European regulation 2016/1628.

How to cut the electricity consumption of your fans by 34%

As often happens, however, a crisis hides new opportunities. Investments in energy efficiency that were once considered unprofitable, at today’s electricity costs have a much faster payback time.

In the case of one of the last consultations carried out, the overall saving was 34% compared to the initial situation. Moving from percentages to absolute values, this client achieved an overall reduction of 183600 kWh per year in the electricity consumption of four fans.

The fans also had low to medium installed powers, ranging from 18.5 to 30 kW. This proves that reducing consumption is cost-effective not only on huge powers. It is in fact the operating mode and the different operating conditions that dictate which is the best efficiency action to pursue.
