Make sure when you draft up your shopping list you include an item from Head Honcho, Pg (27), a heady scent of swag. We feature the Co-Creative director/ Co-Owner Mzoxolo Gcwabe “ People shouldn’t start labels as gimmicks, you must be innovative and have something that your brand stands for, create a lifestyle “….enough said, it’s a brand that you will, with no doubt relate to. We gather samples of talented inspiring people, to show us just how we all can excel, a prime example which is Kyla Rose Smith from Freshlyground Pg (25). Living her own dream “I have a career and I am a fulltime musician.” So it is possible to make a living doing what you love, thank you Kyla for that reminder.

Proudly seated in my organised desk after an enlightening session with the team about conduct and respecting our space, and panicking that our layout team won’t meet the specified deadline. I realise that we have come along way and we have a long way to go. POP CULTURE In South Africa the freedom of expression is under attack, expression at its best, street art, is the beauty of graffiti. We speak to graffiti artist CROE, about his craft. 1. Tell us about yourself?

3. What type of art do

I write CROE, there is no real reason why I chose that name, simply because the letters flow with my style. I write for the SILLY KUNTS crew. A crew I started in Germany in 2004.

My style changes a lot. I go through stages where big blockbusters is my thing for a while, then I cling onto my more technical style- which overall has played the biggest part in my graffiti career so far. I love to paint walls. Walls have always been my thing. I have painted a few trains in Germany and London but for me graffiti has developed into an activity I do to entertain myself. It has moved past that stage of bombing hard to get the next writer to approve of what you are putting up. But graffiti is all about the fame unfortunately, so it’s hard not letting your work get to your head. I always try and remind myself that if I get caught, will those other writers be in the jail cell with me? Then why do work for them? It doesn’t make sense to me. To a degree it’s always a nice thing to have other writers recognise your work, whether it commenting on pics on graffiti websites or even seeing the next generation staring at your work from the metrorail trains. So ye, getting back to the question, I’m definitely a perfectionist and that does play a large part to where I paint. For me, at this stage of my life, I’d prefer to paint chilled but prime s pots. Obviously still pushing my style with every piece I do.

2. How did you start out as a graffiti artist? I started writing when I was 13. I was a very arty kind of child. Easily influenced, I went to a skatepark and saw REALM 1 painting; I was convinced this was my calling in life. I then went back to a fresh year at school and was introduced to LUCK who had just moved schools. He, I and AROK kicked it off immediately. We started off bombing hard, using shoe polish for tagging and whatever made a mark. Things gradually progressed and we started doing pieces almost every second night. We stuck together as a crew and were completely fascinated with this new found hobby of ours. Graffiti was so pure and untouched. We had writers that we heavily looked up to such as DEK 3, KES 6, TOE 007, DISK, MOZK and many others. Back in the day, things were much different. We never had imported paint here in South Africa, we strictly used hardware paint. We never had fancy markers; we made our own markers with dala ink and deodorant tubes.

POPULAR CULTURE

Imbo/ Empowering through entertainment 2nd 2 ndIssue issue 11 11

POP CULTURE 4. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Uhm, I do inspire myself. I believe catching the train and driving on highways does it all for a writer. Just seeing what everyone else is doing while you were sleeping puts you into a deep obsessive frenzy that normally gets you on your phone to the rest of your crew to organise a mission. We just sit and sketch for a few hours. This normally gets the blood flow going and the write energy one needs to actually get out on the street and paint. I am currently studying graphic design so I’m practically drawing and being creative all day. This helps a lot as you are always looking for new concepts and new ways of doing things.

6. Where all have you painted?

When I was 15 I moved to Germany for 3 years with my family. That was my most intense time in the graffiti scene. In Germany graffiti is massive. Germany is where the SK crew started. I used to drag my brother out with me every single night to do paint walls and trains, whether it was snowing or not. Due to the public transport over there we could do loads of pieces a night. We crept out every night, whether it was to do an all night mission or just catch one bus and do a couple tags. It was such a big scene over there, unlike the one fault Cape Town has. I’ve painted a bit in London. Did panels with CRAVE in South London. Painted Copenhagen once. Otherwise ye, that’s it. And of course Cape Town.

8. Where can people find your artwork?

If you catch the train, you will still be able to see my stuff alongside the tracks. As mentioned before I have taken a small step back out of the scene (Unfortunately.) Due to this reason, I have recruited more writers into the crew RAZE and EPIK. These kids are keeping the crew fresh and painting more than most people in Cape Town at the moment.

12

nd Imbo/ Empowering through entertainment 22nd Issue issue

5. To people that do not understand this form of art how would you explain it to them?

Graffiti is a means of expression. There is nothing like being on the street at 2 in the morning, completely alert with a bag full of cans and a crew by your side. Most people walk past pieces everyday without realising what went into that. Graffiti doesn’t just land there. Writers put there balls on the line everyday just so your world can be a brighter place.

7. Which other graffiti artists have you worked with?

I like to keep to my crew when it comes to painting. But I have painted with a couple of writers such as TOE, SURE, ACKS, SOME, GUES ONE, KES SIX, NIPT, ASH ONE, CONS, LUCK, AROK, ZIRO, ARK, RAZE, EPIK and a couple others that have had a short flash fry in the scene.

9. Do you think graffiti should be made legal, and why?

Well, to a certain degree there is a legal form of graffiti. I don’t think bombing and trains would ever be legal. If it was legal, there would be nothing to drive it. Writers would never be able to get that kick out of painting that we do. Imagine painting trains while having a cup of coffee with the guards?? Never... wouldn’t work

Interview with Bryan Ramkiliwan Anam Mhlwatika

I

In every Fashion Council there has to be a CEO, in whose vision the fashion industry is shaped. We got one of the fashion big guns, Bryan Ramkilawan to sit down with us for an interview on what the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC) is and what role he plays as the new CEO of this organization.

Q. Briefly tell us what the CTFC is and what it is that you do as the CEO of this organization?

A. The CTFC is a nonprofit organization that facilitates

funding from the government and is the key channel in funding designers. They facilitate workshops, build brands and are responsible for mentorships and partnerships between designers. We play a major role in the annual Design Indaba and curate fashion weeks, some of my major roles as CEO include sitting on many fashion boards in the country, being responsible for finding funds for designers and nurturing design talent. Giving designers a platform in the industry.

“

Networks are a major factor in this line of work. It also takes a lot of experience

Q. What does it take to be CEO of the CTFC? A. Networks are a major factor in this line of work, It also

takes a lot of experience. I personally graduated in 1987 and come from a mixed background in fashion, I also know the industry thoroughly and know what it takes to build the industry.

Q. What has the transition been like from what you were doing previously, as lecturer at CPUT to now being a CEO?

“

A. Although I was lecturing, I was also an executive

board member of the organization for a number of years

and I assisted and supported the previous Director. I am also one of the founding members of the CTFC so for me it really wasn’t much of a transition it was more of me taking more control of the organization as I felt it needed more growth.

Q. What projects have you been involved in since your take over as CEO?

A. One of the projects is mentoring designers and

prepping them up for retail and producing sellable lines. Social media and online based marketing is critical for many businesses and the CTFC has introduced a programme called Fashion for Facebook which allows designers to optimize their brands on an online platform. There is also a Foschini initiative with the top twenty fashion design graduates in the Western Cape, which is basically a platform for designers who have just come out of design school to get a feel for the market as to what works for retail.

Q. Tell us about some of the big names you’ve worked with and who have stood out for you?

A. David Tlale, Gavin Rajah and Thula Sindi, are some of

We live in global environment the sooner we start going global then only can we meet international standards.

Q. Does the CTFC liaise with other fashion councils within the country?

A. The CTFC plays a huge role in the structuring of the

national council which will be launched in January next year. The CTFC is probably the only stable or solid fashion council that is a registered body in the country, most fashion councils are still in their premature stages. I also work closely with Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe for the International Entrepreneur Design for Africa that is funded by the British Council

Q. Name a few designers to watch

out for in Cape Town at the moment?

A. Selfi by Celeste Arendse is definitely someone we

should look out for as they have been making waves on an international level. MEMEME is a platform for many designers to showcase their work and with them now having expanded and opened up in Johannesburg, also Mungo and Jemima.

Interestingly enough the members of Ill Skillz all spent their teenage years in Gugs and in this area, amongst the hip hop circles, they met. One evening a group of friends were walking home from a valedictory foam party in Observatory and started freestyling. Now for those of you that do not know what freestyling is, it normally refers to rap lyrics that are improvised off the top of your head. So as these youngsters were freestyling while walking home from Observatory all the way to Rondebosch in Cape Town, they decided to form a group. They were all individual rap artists but when their words came together, they became ‘explosive’ or as the rap artists refer to it ‘sick’.

Starting at the bottom from small towns, small circles and a totally un-cool appreciation for rap, these young men have made it big. They have made a name for themselves and the unbelievable talent that they have. Nowhere to go but up... applause to Ill Skillz, having the illest skillz of all!

Cape Town, beautiful by day, is world renowned for its beaches and scenery but as day compares to night, Cape Town has nightlife worth waiting up for. Beyond the stretch of clubs on the rowdily infamous Long Street, those looking for exclusivity with a twist of style and sophistication best pop in at St Yves. Located on the Camps Bay strip, this posh, open planned beach club brings in the days’ sunlight to you; if that’s not enough, there are day beds out on deck, where you will get a whiff of sea salt, sipping on their large variety of fruity cocktails. St Yves’ signature cocktail, Watermelon Crush, with fresh watermelon, a double shot of vanilla vodka, fresh lime and cranberry juice, is a delightful refreshment. A large dance floor, plush low couches, great bar, this is a top choice for party venues. The concept for St Yves is something out of the French Riviera; the owners wanted a St Trappe feel to it. Owned by well seasoned travellers, Dale Parker and Jack Kasi, St Yves opened its doors for the first time in July 2009 and has been going strong ever since. Dale Parker has been part of the industry for years but together with Jack Kasi, who has always wanted to own a club, they came up with the St Yves brand. The club is so exclusive it caters to the ambitious, rich and famous so you would expect to see the best of the best at St Yves. The doors do work off a database, establishing a regular clientele service. But they are open to the public so don’t worry you can head off to Camps Bay for a party with a view. According to Dale, they LOVE ‘the cosmopolitan vibe with good-looking fun people that enjoy the quality of life’. While the number one feature will also be the breathe taking view, you wont be disappointed by the attentive table service. It’s hard to find any other beach club that can top St Yves. Summer holidays with St Yves is something to look forward to, their ‘Summer Sensation’ campaign with world famous DJs, starting off with SA’s favourites, Goldfish on 21st December 2011. St Yves tries to maintain a one on one relationship with customers, so you can expect beautiful ladies, a beautiful view, a red carpet service and one great night.

They started off with just t-shirts and caps eventually including cardigans, varsity jackets, hoodies, shirts, tank tops and dresses for ladies. They now have the likes of AKA and Dj Lulo Café as brand ambassadors.

Head Honcho can be found at Shesha and selected Sportscene stores around the country, and plans are to get into High 5 and Dope Stores soon. It is also available in Zambia and Namibia with Kenya and Nigeria showing keen interest. “This is only the beginning; the master plan is a world take over. While other clothing lines receive only fleeting glances; Head Honcho are ahead of the pack with their progressive thinking. Truth is; every Tom, Dick and Harry perceives any oddment they come across as an omen for them to start a clothing line. They print a few T-shirts and the forever fleeceable South African consumers buy these T-shirts, when in-fact all these supposed designers should be getting is a uproar of loud laughter. The Head Honcho brand is becoming the bellwether in street wear fashion. “People shouldn’t start labels as gimmicks, you must be innovative and have something that your brand stands for; create a lifestyle” says Head honcho Co-Creative Director and Co-Owner Mzoxolo Gcwabe.

The summer is here and Head Honcho’s will of designing clothes according to the season will prove fruitful for their consumers. The summer clothing line is heavily influenced by parties, neon lights, show girls etc. Most youth owned creative companies tend to let the fame becloud their vision; they live in the moment but not these guys. “Everything must be organic and natural, and then one will stand more chances at success” says Mzoxolo. It is apparent that this brand is not for followers and schlemihls but trend setters.

Planning a trip to Madagascar? If you should find yourself in this tropical region, Nosy Be and Nosy Komba are two island treasures, well worth the visit. The Republic of Madagascar is an island country located in the Indian Ocean off the south-eastern coast of Africa. CAREER ADVICE

Back to basics Happi Vate

Here are 3 essentials to keep in mind when making decisions about your career.

1. Play to your skills Focus on what you are good at - and have a plan to get better at it! A skill is the thing you do; it could be creative writing, problem solving, planning parties or events. The trick is to look at your life currently, and see what things you enjoy and find easy to do. If you have studied after school, then focus on the subjects and skills you most enjoyed in your studies. The more you enjoy “doing” something the more you will practice it. The more you practice it, the better you get. The better you get at it, the greater chance of your success and fulfillment. So get in touch with what you love doing and do it as much as possible!

2. Know your field of interests Interests are different to skills-Your “field of interest” in the area in which you practice your skills. For example, you may be a good graphic designer and you love cooking, so being a graphic designer working in a food company will be much more fulfilling for you than doing graphic design for a bank. So in this example, the field of interest is “food and cooking”, your field of interest could be fashion, sports, politics, farming etc. The key is to understand that you can apply your skill in any of these fields of interest, and when you are practicing your skills (design, accounting, problem solving event managing etc) in a field of interest that you are really interested in, then your work will be that much more exciting and fulfilling!

The more you enjoy “doing” something the more you will practice it

3. Choose a good space Spend some time thinking about the kind of environment you like and also what you don’t like. Do you prefer a chaotic environment or a quiet calm space, do the people you interact with uplift and support you or put you down. If you have a boss, does he/she take interest in your career development or just demands more and more work from you. Think about whom you want to work with and want kind of environment best sets you up for success!

In Summary When you have all three above areas on track you are primed to grow, be successful and enjoy what you do!

NETWORKING SESSIONS

Network tricks of trade

I

“It’s not what you know but who you know,” states Wayne Gaskins, Senior Partner of Event Speciality Partners (ESP). It’s a very bold statement but what it really comes down to, is that many people have the same qualifications, same career directions or similar business ideas as you. What gives you that extra edge, helping your ambitions materialise are the people you know.

The aim is to hone the kind of skills that have become second nature to old corporates

South Africa has a very competitive job market, with unemployment rates through the roof, young entrepreneurs and professionals feel the urgency to put their best foot forward. “What Event Speciality Partners (ESP) and South African Network Alliance (SANA) realised was the need for a networking space for young professionals in South Africa.” says Gaskins, “for the last couple of months we have created a space for young professionals from each sector to meet and do business.”

“Meeting people, letting them know who you are and what you do,” says Gaskins, these network sessions aim to teach business know-how “when someone asks for you business cards and you don’t have one, you just missed a boat.” Anyone can benefit from these network sessions, even if you’re not business minded, mixing with people in your industry can boost your progress. “We’ve had some fashion shows at our events, with models, photographers, designers and magazine editorial teams,” the opportunities are endless. “It’s about creating additional resources for people outside of their immediate community.” ends Gaskins. To join these sessions send a bio of yourself with your career aims to sanapro2@gmail.com. Each session starts with a key note and a opportunity for ten young professionals to speak about their business or what they do, each session has a particular skills focus, living by ESP’s motto of “connecting, motivating and growing new emerging talented professionals.”

“The aim is to hone the kind of skills that have become second nature to old corporates.” Meeting people in a social setting, getting to know them and what they do, nurturing and building a possible future working relationship. With young professionals from different sectors, from bankers to lawyers, tech guys to designers and magazine editorial teams, these networking sessions, are a window of opportunity to meet people you wouldn’t normally mix with, share ideas, work together with an exchange of talents.

LIFE SKILLS

'Party with a Purpose' Reese Sketo

T

The holiday season is upon us and there will be year-end and religious holidays get togethers and business functions after hours. This can be a time of great self-marketing and getting noticed by the corporate brass. The first word you have to get stuck in your head is confidence. There is nothing that commands respect like being completely comfortable with yourself. If you don’t really feel it, learn to fake it. Here are a few tips to help you on your way to appearing comfortable in any situation. First thing : Dress appropriately. Err of the side, a caution as to the outfit you choose. If you show up in a mini skirt and the tone is formal you will not make the impression one hopes to make. Remember, though it is called an office party it is still around your colleagues. You don’t need to show everyone how many shots of tequila you can do. Slow down : Ever notice how a person seen to be in a leadership position is not hurried or rushed. Take it easy. Do everything at half speed. Eat and drink slowly in small amounts with each taste. Don’t glup or gobble. Don’t be jiggery with your utensils. Remember, everyone assumes you know what your doing until you indicant otherwise.

If you are unsure of the correct way to eat something or which utensil to use, then watch the others around you. See how they are doing it and follow their lead. Dress for the impression you want to make: Don’t buy 20 average things, buy 1 or 2 exceptionally well made outfits and accessories. Good bag, well made shoes, well tailored jacket – quality recognizes quality. Dress the part. Network : The clubs are for working off a bit of steam, functions are to network. You never know who will be an important contact in the future. Conduct yourself with the dignity you would use at a job interview. There are no second chances for first impressions. Show off your people skills: Mix well and with a wide range of people. Introduce yourself with a warm and engaging smile. Take the first step to start up a light conversation. You have no idea who is listening or watching. With these suggestions in mind, go and enjoy the hard work you’ve done throughout 2011 and look forward to a bright future in 2012 and beyond. Positive attitudes are the biggest draw card of all.

ANALYSIS Report

Malema - En route to 'Martyrdom'? Kudzai Mazvarirwofa

struggle to create a non-racial, non-sexist united, democratic and prosperous society” but as has been noticed on multiple occasions, Malema resorts to pulling the ‘race card’ in order to garner the allegiance of the youth. Whilst Malema was found not guilty on a third charge of inciting racial hatred and inflaming divisions in the country, it is pretty obvious that some of his strategically uttered phrases and comments (insert ‘Kill the Boer’ debacle here) have gone a long way in strengthening the racial rift in South Africa. Leaders, in my opinion, are ‘leaders’ because they have to ‘lead’ the people who value their opinion by example not to over-exploit the reasons that put them there. The March for ‘economic freedom’ led by Malema from Johannesburg CBD to Sandton was supposed to aid the under-privileged, to create a voice for them to try and find ways to better their situation. This march achieved minimal to nil except to prove that Malema can pull a crowd. The irony comes right after the march, before the protestors heels even had a chance to cool off from the march of ‘economic freedom’ Malema is already showcasing lavish displays of money for a close friends wedding in Limpopo. It is all good to try and fight for economic justice but then showing such lavish displays of luxury after one has claimed to empathize with the less fortunate is rather condescending and served him no political advantages. From where I stand, the march was Malema’s way to show just how many people would be willing to stand behind him if he pulled rank, his attempt at intimidation.

I tend to wonder whether the majority of the youth felt subsequently represented in all respects by their former leader, who is reputed to have quite the motor-mouth. One of the aims in the constitution of the ANCYL is to, “ strive to rally the youth of South Africa to support and unite behind the ANCYL and to actively participate in the

40

Whilst his suspension is pending an appeal, Malema is trying his best to act blasé about the whole situation, claiming that he will still be a supporter of the ANC and that his blood is ‘black, green and gold’; people wait with baited breath to find out whether or not Malema will be reinstated. I for one believe that there has been enough mud-slinging and finger-pointing and not enough action where it is needed. If Malema takes the seat again, he must be willing and prepared to do more than point fingers and hide behind the past mistakes that occurred during apartheid. Malema needs to place his money where his mouth is and do all the things he has promised but in order for that to be even remotely possible, he needs to remove his foot from his mouth first.

Julius Malema, South Africa’s outspoken ANC Youth leader who was suspended from the party for indiscipline, has claimed he is being persecuted for his beliefs just as Nelson Mandela was persecuted for fighting apartheid. On several occasions Malema has been quoted aligning himself with phenomenal leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, using his predicament of being ostracized from the ANCYL presidency as a similar instance as that undergone by Mr Mandela when he endured his 27 year prison sentence during apartheid. What is rather patronizing is the fact that Malema states that his fiveyear suspension is nothing compared to the 27 years suffered by Mandela, yet in the same breath he compares his heroism to be in more or less the same league. Malema is a man of multiple contradictions.

What’s your number? After reading a magazine article, that claims woman who sleep with more than twenty men fail to get married, Ally Darling (Anna Faris) tallies up her own number. At nineteen she fears the next guy she gets intimate with has to be her husband. When that fails she sets on a mission, with the help of her sexy, playboy archetype, neighbour, Colin, (Chris Evans) to trace down all her single exes that might have gotten better with time, to find her match. How much is too much for women, this film does not explore the time old discussions that men with large numbers are studs and woman are whores. She will love it: It’s a comedic farce, Ally Darling’s inability to accept herself, acting out different identities with each boyfriend. He will love it: For the often vulgar humour, Faris is as funny as she is beautiful; when she is not semi-clad her legs are always on view Bestline: Ex-boyfriend: Well if I wasn't your first, at least I can be your last.Ally Darling: Why? Are you going to rape and kill me later?

When all terms are decided, how long before the inevitable happens, how long can Emma hold out on sexy, sweet, sensitive and rich, Adam’s advances for more. Two very good-looking cast members, tons of raunchy sex scenes. What makes it interesting is that the gender roles in this romcom are reversed. She will love it: For once woman in movies are frank about their sexual needs and desires. He will love it: Its every guy’s dream, you wish you could live vicariously through Adam. Bestline: Emma: I think monogamy goes against our basic biology.

Drake Take Care They say Drake exists in a world where everyone owns diamonds and no mirrors, every track on Take Care he peels off the extra layers of hip hop braggadocio and fronting to show himself naked to his listeners. He frankly expresses his conflicted feelings towards fame, failed romances, missed connections, relationship with friends and family, this over ostentatiously dark and somber, jagged tracks, its been received as a ‘moody masterpiece’ but in a world of hyped up facades, Drake seems to be the l ast connective tissue to the heart of hip hop. There is however so little about this album that shouts typical hip hop, despite working with some of the biggest names in music and hip hop today, the best technicians, like producer Noah “40” Shebib and The Weeknd and artists, like Stevie Wonder, Rick Ross etc. He has been known to have the type of rhyming rap that sings, a kind of R&B/hip hop artist but its worked for him thus far.In Take Care his feelings compromises the kind of rapping skill we’ve been accustomed to hear from him. It blurs the lines between hip-hop, R&B and low-tempo dance music.

His colab with Rihanna and the title-track, is pure dance. Some tracks are experimental and psychedelic, like ‘Crew Love’ with vocals to which Drake only comes in at the two minute mark, or ‘Marvin’s Room’ that has been distorted to have the audio experience of a drunken dialler. The album has an atmospheric sound, muted textures, slow tempos, subtle chords, dark, melodic synth tracks, low-end grooves, with a common thread of keyboards throughout the album. With tracks that explore themes of loneliness, heartbreak, and mistrust, and a prevalent theme of women, you’ll find yourself listening to this when your just chilling at your crib. He has been rightfully dubbed the new face of hip hop after the release of Thank Me Later, every other young, up and coming rapper came off sounding like his replica. if there was any doubt about it, he confronts this in his first song: I think I killed everybody in the game last year, man...Yeah, are these people really discussing my career again?/Asking if I’ll be going platinum in a year again/Don’t I got the shit the world wanna hear again? Truth is, he is the new face of hip hopthrough and this album the sound of2 nd tomorrow. Imbo/ Empowering entertainment Issue 47
