EMPOWERING THROUGH ENTERTAINMENT

Looking back on my days at Varsity I thought I knew it all and well, this thing called life made sure it reared its head to show me I most certainly did not. Such is the ignorance of youth. I made some big mistakes and I still cringe at some of the idiocy I displayed when encountered with having to make decisions around my studies, my career and my boyfriends. What I didn’t know is that we actually are very wise indeed but it’s not a wisdom that comes from books or the media, it’s been within us all along. This issue celebrates “wisdom in youth” because while you may be clueless in some areas there are some important things that a young person knows intuitively and that one must make a part of their every day life knowing they have access to this if they just look deep enough. The youth must acknowledge and reconnect with that wisdom deep down inside all of us that springs from the same magnificent source of our being. I believe it’s about knowing that an education is our birthright and an essential part of our evolution on this planet, that love is the most positive force there is in the universe, that looking after our bodies and respecting our environment will sustain us and that as an individual we have the power to choose to do the right thing and not to let the systems created take energy from us or lead us from our true path. That is where wisdom resides in youth, because you can still look at the world with an open heart and not be blinded by racism, intolerance and greed. No matter what your age you can always live young and live free. Simone M x

BMX'ing as we know it Lyle Eyden

F

ounder of the long time S.E Racing BMX manufacturer, Scot Breitaupt first introduced BMXing over 40 years ago. As a motocross rider in his day, Scot realised that there was a huge interest in the sport from the local kids in his neighbourhood who would imitate his jumps whenever he practised. Realising this he decided to offer different skills classes namely beginner, novice nad expert levels. And after only a week at the track, at least 150 kids showed up to participate in the new found craze. Over the years the sport has grown substantially and has been included as an extra mural activity in various schools around the world and has even made its way to the Olympics.

10 IMBO/ ISSUE 3/ 2012

Over the years the sport has changed so much that there have been many variations of BMX riding styles that have been introduced ranging from Street, Flatland, Dirt jumping, Vert, Bmx Racing, Freestyle and Track & Trail. The sport is bound to grow even further as it is ever evolving, and BMXers are continuously coming up with new tricks and riding styles. Street riding These are the BMXers that you see jumping down the flight of stairs at your office, or grinding the railings at your local library. Street riding is basically the BMXer that finds his fun anywhere along the street, whether it be riding the wall of your house, or jumping over your garbage can on the side of the road.

Flatland This style of riding is rather self-explanatory. These are tricks done on flat land. Just you and the bike. This style is considered very difficult and requires extreme concentration. Dirt Jumping Dirt Jumping tends to be the most extreme out of the list. Although it's a pretty simple style it gives mass adrenalin on a BMX. You pedal as fast as you can, (in most cases downhill) to build incredible speed towards a dirt jump which loosely put is a huge ramp made of gravel, and get great height pulling off some cool tricks whilst air born. Vert These are your more modern styles of

riding. It mostly includes riding a halfpipe (ramp shaped in a U) and doing tricks whilst in the air. They are commonly done at indoor skate parks made from wood. Free style Freestyle is what we would call a modern way of riding. It is basically a combination of Vert, Street and Flatland. Track & Trail Much like BMX racing Track & Trail just not with many opponents at once. It’s a single BMX rider on a longer trail, with dirt jumps. Each rider is timed and the rider with the shortest time is the winner.

died substantially since the 90’s, and people out there should know that there's some serious fun to be had BMXing. There are still a lot of riders around on the Cape Flats and surrounding areas and it would do our communities alot of good if we could keep the BMX scene alive. So I urge you all - show some interest and find a local crew, get yourself a BMX, and keep RIDING.

That is just BMXing in a nutshell today. Although it used to be a major buzz on the Cape flats, the BMX scene has

orn and bred in Cape Town, the 18-year-old describes her life as a series of musical notes being showcased on a stave, one octave at a time. Brownie is driven and determined and as a result has seen her music grow beneath her to a somewhat phenominal craze among teens.

“I’m just me, what you see is what you get.”

As no stranger to music she has managed to work herself into the industry. Having a great love for gospel music, she started out singing for a gospel group called One Family. Years later her passion grew and her first album was produced and launched in April last year by Crybaby Entertainment. Her producer Damian Roman describes her as an inspiring artist who shows a great love for music. Brownie is currently studying music at Cape Music Institute as a 1st year student. Being a young singer, she fears alone time and prefers noise to silence and crowds like a real diva. According to Brownie, individuality is something that each person holds onto and it’s important to tap into this.

“People believe that they can’t follow their dreams because of their circumstance. Journeys are born and not made.” “To fulfill your God given talent, you need to be passionate and driven to become a stronger individual,” she says. Not only is Brownie a talented singer but she has since grown into an artist who is not afraid to play around with different genres including rap. She is currently working on her mix tape which will be

released later in the year. She also recently shot the music video to her debut single “Prettiest Girls”, and describes the experience as amazing. “It was at this point that I felt like a respected artist,” she says. Brownie sets a scene for the young, making her music and music videos applicable for her age category. “Featuring so many different age groups in my video made it a happy and successful shoot.” Brownie says she also believes there needs to be a balance between stage life and society.

“ I strive to be a good performer, and I’m always looking for new ways to improve my talent. Rememebring to be humble to my fans once I’m off stage and giving them that acknowledgement in my life is also very important.”

The True Disease

ate, anger, turmoil, pride, violence, individualism, competition, money, war, hunger, poverty, religion, imbalance, sickness, stress, law, oppression, the system and all actions alike. If I ask you what the above collection of words means in our existence i will be greeted with the answer, ‘Life’ or ‘the way it is’.

OSITY and INTUITION. It was CURIOSITY which would allow us to attempt the practical and INTUITION which would guide us through obtaining the answers and happening we did seek. Today we have seen the TRUE DISEASE reveal itself in language. It is so true it could not even hide itself from words.

The truth of the matter is that this is not the way things should be. Each and every single one of us knows this. The above collective goes against everything we know to be ‘perfect’ or quite simply ‘right’. The above collective is a completely foreign state to what we know as balanced and natural. This means that the above collective goes against the ease of being. When things are as the above collective, they are a DISEASE.

From here we will go on and discover the meaning of terms such as COLLECTIVE CONSENSUS and TRUE COOL, these are our weapons and saving grace.

The fact we accept this DISEASE so casually and as simply a part of life means that we have allowed it to become the normal. This is to say that we have allowed it to build a co-dependency with our state and as such, we have made it TRUE. So as we have just worked out for ourselves, together in the above text, that the above collective is but in fact the TRUE DISEASE. I hope you are all well and have enjoyed the journey since we last engaged. I trust you attempted the practical from last issue and I sincerely hope there was something that came of it. Be careful with sharing too casually, the enemy (the perpetuator of the TRUE DISEASE) is actively offensive in its defence of their way. Indeed though, make a passion of bringing others onto their journey. I am thankful to be with you again and I have been thinking hard about what the next insert in our conversation here should be. I have been guided to believe that we should start by getting an understanding for the situation. In order to understand the situation, we have to term the current state and the weapons which are its keeper. We also have to term our solutions and our weapons. So in our first article we dealt with CURI-

The journey and the learning will not be complete without the understanding MONEY (the greatest implementer and upholder of the TRUE DISEASE). Our ultimate satisfaction and comfort is that we have already won. We are playing a rigged game here my brothers and sisters. We were born having won and it is simply realization of this through COLLECTIVE CONSENSUS which will lead us to VICTORY. We have the ultimate and that is LOVE. As we go on to discover together, we will discover the power of LOVE. The next discussion will be the defining of MONEY. We will dissect and understand this weapon and break it down to its most simple form and fact. We will embark on a cruise of discovery into the single most powerful creation of COLLECTIVE CONSENSUS we have before us. In the meantime, I would like to leave you another practical. I ask that you do a little research to prepare for our next engagement upon the journey. I would like you to Google some things about MONEY. Look up something called Modern Money Mechanics and glance through the information. Ask YouTube for any videos which could explain this MONEY. I look ultimately forward to our next engagement and I wish only the greatest for your SOUL in the meantime. I command LOVE and POSITIVE ENERGY upon your journey for the coming.

t was a cold, wet, Saturday afternoon but the atmosphere inside Sevruga restaurant was warm, inviting, cozy and buzzing with patrons.

After reading over the menu at least five times and taking what seemed like a decade to decide what we wanted to order my lunch partner and I gave up and simply sipped on our Chardonnay until we could make up our minds. And who could blame us with a menu like that. Starters consisted of things like duck liver pate on sesame seed praline topped with apple chutney and Tom Yum hot sweet and sour prawn soup not to mention an entire sushi menu .The main dishes vying for my pallet were the ragout of springbok penne pasta topped with parmesan shavings and slow braised neck of lamb on matafam potatoes. The choice was overwhelming but nothing a good appetite couldn’t solve spurred on by basket full of the fresh soft bread. Finally settling in to our meal very comfortably we made our decisions. I ordered

the crispy fried spicy calamari rings drenched in sweet chilli satay sauce and my partner chose the roasted tomato tart topped with caramelized onions and creamy goats cheese with balsamic reduction and just because we were intrigued by the crispy risotto balls stuffed with smoked buffalo mozzarella on truffle aioli we took a plate of that too. The flavors of the calamari were in perfect sync and the spicyzest in exact contrast to the melt in your mouth calamari rings. The tarte wasutter perfection, every bite like a grand symphony of flavor and if heaven was a rice ball we were at the pearly gates. Imagine biting into a crisp warm coating, giving way to gooey soft rice smothered in melted cheese and topped with a creamy mushroom sauce. Our mains which we barely were able to finish were the miso

infused kingklip topped with sweet ginger and garlic sauce and traditionalCape Malay chicken curry were perfect fare forthe burgeoning winter and prepared with such perfection and dedication we weresad to see it end. Dessert was simply a liquid one as there was no room formuch else. The Amarula martini shaken with condense milk put a sweet smotheringon the passionate flavors of the meal. The name Sevruga like the caviar suggestsopulence, wealth and exclusivity but it is one of the most comfortable and nonpretentious places to dine. Its five star food and service is where you’ll findits luxurious nature and your total satisfaction at the dining experience willput Sevruga straight into your speed dial. I’ve already planned my visit andchoosing won’t be so hard next time as I know with certain confidence anythingI pick will be a winner.

orn in Swaziland and raised in Durban, Lindiwe Mazibuko is South Africa’s fourth youngest parliamentarian. Having matriculated from St Mary’s DSG in 1997, Mazibuko attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree. Following this, Mazibuko spent a few years in Europe travelling and working, before returning to South Africa. Upon her return, she attended the University of Cape Town where she obtained a BA in French, Classics and Media Writing in 2006, as well as a BA Honours degree in Political Communication in 2007.

Whilst studying at UCT, Mazibuko decided to write her thesis on the Democratic Alliance, after then party leader Tony Leon, stepped down in 2006. It was at this stage that her passion for politics became apparent and upon graduation, she became the DA’s media liaison officer in Parliament. Unbeknownst to Mazibuko, this was just the beginning of her political career. In 2008, she decided to stand for public office and was subsequently elected to Parliament in 2009. The following year saw Mazibuko become the shadow minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, and in

Lindiwe admits that in her work the days are long and the work is hard. “But the rewards of being able to contribute to South Africa’s fast-changing political discourse are immense,” she says. At only 31, Mazibuko is defiant when the question of ‘necessary experience’ is put to her. “Having worked as the party’s spokesperson for the past two and a half years, I believe I certainly have the necessary experience in terms of communicating the DA’s vision for the future and the road towards the 2014 election.”

They should tackle all challenges, learn as much as they can and use every experience as a lesson to help carry them through the next chapter of their life,” she says. Looking forward, Mazibuko is focused on making sure the next two and a half years are successful for the DA in Parliament. She recently told East Coast Radion that her party has a plan. “We put it forward during the election, and we’re going to execute it now that we’ve been elected.” She also makes no secret of her possible intent to run for the leadership sometime in the future, but for now, her main focus is on Parliament.

In fact, she believes her age could very well count in her favour based on the youthful majority of South African voters. “I don’t view my age as a disadvantage at all,” says Mazibuko. “Not only because South Africa is such a young country, but also because of the under-representation of South Africa’s young people in politics. The editing is the tough part because I’m quite the perfectionist. I spend hours on a video, selecting only the finest shots and lace it together so you get a really exciting and captivating video that makes you want to watch it over and over again.” This venture started in 2011 when he shot the ‘Love all freedom day party’ at Deluxe in Cape Town and has done many videos for different companies since then.

He’s a cutting edge videographer who aims to be different and draw attention to the editing of videos, in doing so, highlighting the work that many editors do behind the scenes that always go unnoticed. In 2005 Zunaid enrolled at City Varsity in Kloof Street, Cape Town. He completed his three year advanced diploma in Film and Television production, where he majored in video editing. After his first year of college Zunaid moved to the inner city of Cape Town so he could get more involved in the creative projects offered in the curriculum. This included music videos, short films, spending time on set and of course spending hours editing in front of a PC. Zunaid’s skills really started to blossom in 2006, during his second year at City Varsity. He interned at a production company called FixerFilm and helped edit the first season of

He also did numerous red bull events throughout South Africa and even a documentary for the Crime and Investigation channel about The Ellen Pakkies Story, which aired globally on the C&I network. According to Zunaid his most challenging and rewarding work was doing 20+ episodes of Carte Blanche in which he covered many different topics. Only 25 years old, Zunaid’s impressive resume doesn’t end there. He currently works as an editor for the Expresso Morning Show on SABC3. Zunaid’s personality and working style reflects his alter ego as he states, “I picture Zunaid the Editor as a character, a sort of samurai assassin, who “cuts” up film and “kills” his audience with stunning videos. People often ask me why my videos are so short, I say that just like a professional assassin doesn’t fool around but instead gets the job done, I don’t need more time to impress my audience and blow them away.” With that said we are sure to expect great things.

As a result Zonke recalls a very lonely childhood, and being reffered to as boring or lame or described as the girl who thought she was better than everyone else ‘which didnt make things any easier. “I had to go through all of this because I was different, because I focussed on school and wasn’t following the crowd.” Her identity started shaping up in High School when she joined the Leap Science and Maths School and while there, started seeing things in a different way. “At Leap it

I discovered my voice and ability to be the agent of change in my own community as opposed to having elders constantly holding and guiding me all the way. Because of this I was involved in community projects that dealt specifically with young people, and breaking the cycles we where used to as the youth living in the townships,” says Zonke. In matric Zonke started thinking about the career she wanted to follow and fortunately she had teachers who where willing to have difficult conversations with her about her personality and the careers she wanted to go into. “One teacher asked me ‘what is it that I am willing to die for’, and at this point I thought I’m only 17 so why would I want to think at that level. I believe that elders are failing at the moment and they need to go back to keeping us accountable for our actions. As young people we also need to start claiming our own journeys and be individuals within a group, because I believe we are all agents of change of our own communities”, says Zonke.

NETWORKING SESSIONS

What Makes a "Good" Sergio Henriques

E

veryone wants to make a successful blog but few actually know how and even fewer know how to keep it going. A blog is a modern day version to its predecessor, the Bulletin Board System (BBS)[1], where users could log into a created system and interact with other users, upload & download data and read articles and news. My uncle, Jerry Henriques, was one of the earliest creators of a South African BBS called Paragon[2] in 1990 and he lives by the philosophy of being meticulous and utterly precise by everything you do. The same philosophy needs to be applied to modern day blogging.

What Makes a Good Blog? Eye-catching vs. Eye sore:

According to eye-tracking research done by the Nielsen Norman Group: “Web users spend 80% of their time looking at information above the page fold. Although users do scroll, they allocate only 20% of their attention below the fold”[3] and “Web users spend 69% of their time viewing the left half of the page and 30% viewing the right half.”[4] A “Page Fold” refers to the bottom of your page, where a user would have to scroll

34 IMBO/ ISSUE 3/ 2012

to keep reading your article. Since they dedicate most of their time on your page above the fold, you need to make it appealing in order to entice them to read further and so spend more time on your blog. This can be achieved by effective use of layout, graphics and of course your article’s content and how it is structured. Referring to the statistic of horizontal attention above, a conventional layout of keeping your navigation links to the left, or from left to right, will yield better user response. Control your graphics and keep ads to a minimum as research also reflects a current trend known as “banner blindness”[5]. Any valuable information in or around adverts will be mostly ignored by the reader’s eye as seen by the picture below:

where the user can get what they want quickly, but with the added difference that what you are selling to them is quality of course.

Content – What it’s all about:

Blog guides often talk about being yourself when creating a blog and publishing articles but what does that mean exactly? Well, being yourself refers to writing about what interests YOU. Don’t make the mistake of simply catering for what you believe people’s needs are while having the least amount of interest in what you are writing because that is a recipe for failure. By writing articles that interest yourself, you will become passionately devoted to persevere in writing more articles and so keep the content of your blog flowing. As many a failed blogger will tell you, losing interest became the death of many blogs.

Get connected: Image sourced from http://www.useit.com/alertbox/ banner-blindness.html

Article layout - Keep it short and “punchy”. Make your blog an easy-toread experience and allow the user to move quickly through your articles. Your blog should be like a fast-food restaurant,

Don’t be a hermit. Hermits get little attention and so will your blog. Getting connected refers to links, attribution/citation, being a part of the blogging community and social networking platforms. Creating links to sources of information related to

NETWORKING SESSIONS your own will tell the user/reader two things about you. Firstly it will tell them that you are well researched in the topic of your article and that you accommodate various viewpoints other than your own. This will create a certain degree of trust of your user/reader and they will devote more time and consideration in reading your article. Attribution/Citation – Give due credit to the intellectual property of others and show your reader that although certain parts of your article are not of your own creation, you have at least the intelligence to understand and compliment your article with the additional information. Again, this will show the reader that you devote your time to research and possess a high knowledge of what you are writing about. Blogging communities are a great place to get known and are a simple signup away. They allow bloggers to list themselves and users searching by categories of interest will sooner or later be drawn to your blog. Example of blogging communities are blogher.com, blogsearchengine.com, blogengage.com and so on. Social networking platforms provide a very large outreach to possible readers. You can tweet about your blog using Twitter, or create a blog link and fan page on Facebook, or share a link with friends on StumbleUpon etc… The possibilities for marketing your blog online are vast to say the least, it’s just a matter of a lot of elbow

Researching your information well will empower you to ask the question that everyone else failed to ask and so create your own unique angle on a topic. This is far more attractive to a reader than drifting through the sea of monotonous information in the hope of finding something original. There is little difference between a “real journalist” and a “blogging journalist” as the rules of the game apply to both. The fundamental difference between the two is simply writing style. Traditionally written news, with its wall-of-text and multi-page spreads will never survive online and it simply takes a short tour of current online news webpages to discover how the information has been optimised for online reading. Referring back to the section of content and being yourself, write about things you experience in daily life and are closest to you. This will ensure an honest take on the situation and provide two positive aspects to your article: Readers will either be able to relate to what you are saying and/or they will be enlightened by learning something new about where you are from. Most importantly, be accurate, even though you may not be accountable to the degree that news agency journalists are, you still have a duty to your own reputation to depart truths instead of falsities.

grease, along with time and patience.

Summary:

The Original Journalist: Nobody wants to read the same thing twice, especially internet users.

blog-entry demands the following:

•A good punchy intro above the “Page Fold”

•A layout that is easy on the eye (blog navigation & article layout)

•Correct use of graphics and conservative use of ads

•Write about what interests you •Use appropriate links, Attribution and Citations

•Join Blog Communities •Make use of Social Networking Platforms as a marketing tool

•Be original •Be accurate and professional •Give readers something to relate to or enlighten them

So, what have we learnt from the above? A good blog /

AFRICA CONNECT

ANGOLA Tamsyn Abrahams

A

ngola is situated in the South Central part of Africa. The Country is split into 18 Provinces, the Capital being Luanda. Angola isn’t a very popular tourist destination because of its 27 year Civil war, which ended in 2002.

The government has tried to introduce basic health care services to people, but unfortunately the lack of personnel to provide medical assistance in the field is sorely evident. Angola has the world’s lowest life expectancy. Only a minority of the population has access to proper health care. The majority of the population below the poverty line suffers from diseases such as cholera, tuberculosis, and measles. Most of the deaths are because of malnutrition and undernourishment.

The Angolan community is extremely rich and diverse in its culture, languages, traditions and ceremony’s. Unfortunately the Angolan society is still under division. Because of the civil war many of the cultural customs were disrupted, halted or completely stopped. There are various tribes in Angola and tribal affiliation is extremely important because of political views. There are many as 40 languages spoken in Angola but the official Language is Portuguese. The locals are bilingual, not only can they speak Portuguese but are able to understand and speak at least 7other languages dependent on their tribe. A few of the languages spoken are Chokwe, Kikongo, Kimbundo, Mbunda, Oxikuanyama and Umbundu. Forty Eight percent of the population follows their indigenous beliefs and the rest are either Roman Catholic or Protestant practicing both religions accordingly. Angola has a rich story telling tradition. One of Angola’s’ famous political poets was also one of Angola’s former presidents, Antonio Agostinho Neto. Angolan Music is influenced by the

36 IMBO/ ISSUE 3/ 2012

country’s political history as well as the world’s trends. Semba is one of the genre’s familiar in the country and speaks about political struggles and can be seen as a form of storytelling. Another well known genre is Kizomba, best described as a mixture of Jazz and Caribbean music. Due to the Civil war the agricultural sector has suffered. Many of the areas can’t be farmed for fear of being killed. Transporting goods is also a dangerous task. Workers are also forced to flee the land before harvest time therefore it’s in no one’s best interest to purchase land for cultivation.

Despite the difficulties and challenges that the majority of the population is faced with sports has been their saving grace. The most well known sporting activities in Angola are basketball and soccer. Other sports common in the country are handball, boxing, volleyball, athletics and swimming. Angola managed to not only make it to the African Basketball Championships in 2003 but won as well. Angola also represented the African continent in basketball at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. In 2006, they were one of three African countries to make it to the World Championships in Japan. Their soccer team qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Whether it’s Soccer or basketball, Angola makes its mark while looking to the future.

LIFE SKILLS

Between the LInes of Knowledge and Wisdom Ashleigh Testimony Davids

Applied Knowledge Is Power There is a common saying which notes that knowledge is power, like many other things I believe that when idle, knowledge leaves you as well off as you were without it. ‘What is most important is the knowledge of how to apply knowledge..’ Ron Young For example, what does it benefit us to know that we need to study to attain good results, when we do not proceed to do it? Can we gain anything from being aware of theory, truth, information, processes or principles when there is no application? Knowledge cannot serve it’s purpose when it does not leave the courts of our minds. At some point it needs to move beyond our intellect and become part of the lives we lead. It can almost be said, that knowledge applied is power, and furthermore that knowledge applied fuels wisdom.

DO IT: Do not settle for knowing something, live it! Go beyond your smarts, and be wise!

Do Not Reject Wisdom As a young generation, we are plagued by rebellion, and an attitude which is housed on the equation, ‘I know it all, and you can’t teach me a thing’.

We dismiss the advice and teachings of our elders and often link doing so to very sound reasoning. However, we are quick to do so, and slow to realize that beyond our differences, and the change in times, there are principles, standards and ideologies which remain immovable in the hands of time. With time, comes experience, and with experience comes understanding, which often births a wisdom that cannot be matched by our ignorance and disapproval of authority, submission and refusal of advice or correction which differs from our own thoughts.

Think about it! Are you teachable? Can you listen and drown out your inability to gain the slightest truth, logic and knowledge someone elderly may have to impart? Give it a try.

Sharing Knowledge/ Wisdom A crucial means of gaining knowledge and wisdom, is to share it. Insight is birthed in discussion, debate, conversation and teaching. The sharing of opinions, thoughts, facts, and theories often leaves room for the development of views taken from a different approach as well as an expansion (adding to) of your current knowledge of a subject. A Cape Town based initiative, F.O.E.T.U.S, is a movement seeking to inspire, teach and develop a new generation of Hip Hop

music expressionists. The movement was conceived by Tyrone Da Silva also known as DJ Eazy, Jeremy Koeries and Ralph Erasmus in 1996 and was finally birthed in 2010. These individuals have been involved in Hip Hop since the early 90’s. One of the movements objectives is to teach through means of forum discussions and workshops. One such workshop was held in March 2012 at Kaleidoscope Cafe in Claremont. The evening featured international Hip Hop artists Sho Baraka and Suzy Rock who were in the city as part of a project called The Lions Tour of Africa. Proceedings included a panel discussion, where audience members were free to ask questions relating to ones journey as an individual and artist, also touching on industry specific topics. Aspiring and active artists from our local areas were able to receive knowledge and wisdom gained by professionals in the field, through means of constructive conversation, a medium that is often missing from our society. Such workshops are said to continue with both local artists and expected guests from the US and other African countries expected in town later this year.

PERSONAL APPLICATION: Speak to people about your experiences, share your views and understanding of things when presented with an opportunity, you may be surprised at the seed of both knowledge and wisdom you can plant in someone’s life.

Gangster Museum Simone Martufi

S “Its about people needing an identity or wanting to fit in or perhaps taking back power where they feel they are disempowered in the eyes of society even though this is the wrong way”

iyabulela Daweti, a graduate of Luhlaza High School and Raymond Ackerman Academy is one of the many young people in South Africa with an ambition to make a difference. At present he attends UCT graduate school of Business “innovation classes” where students create a business idea that is nurtured and grown into a real working and functioning concept and Siyabulela’s idea is finally coming to fruition. His idea, to establish Cape Town’s first “Gangster Museum”.

“It’s no small fact that gangsterism in South Africa is a far reaching problem. Due to the intricate nature of this “cult” quality that gangsterism brings, there’s little the police can do to stop them. I’m from Kayelitsha and there is such a high crime rate, this is one way of addressing this issue but also giving the parents a place to turn to.” “Its about people needing an identity or wanting to fit in or perhaps taking back power where they feel they are disempowered in the eyes of society even though this is the wrong way”.

The concept of such a museum is not unusual in other parts of the world though. All over the US, in notoriously gang dominated cities like Chicago and Las Vegas, similar establishments have sprung up and seek to glorify the gangster in the heydays of the Mob era. Daweti’s idea, however, is slightly different. “It’s going to be an awareness program too. We want to educate people to the dangers of falling in to gangs and educate people on how they operate, especially parents.”

The most famous gangs in Cape Town are the numbers gangs consisting of the 26’s, 27’s, and 28’s. These gangs are most prominent inside of Pollsmoor Prison and in the impoverished neighbourhoods of Cape Town. Daweti also wants to address the issue of former gang members not being able to get a job because of their criminal records and so proposes that the shop inside the museum will sell arts and crafts made by former inmates.

His museum will be a strong step in the opposite direction steering clear of the glorification of gangs and exposing the ugly underbelly of gangster life. He says that, 18 Gangster Museum is a museum that showcases the history of Western Cape gangsters. The museum has arte facts and its aim is to educate society on the origins of gangsterism including the role of assisting in eradicating the social problems associated with gangsterism in the local communities. When asked why open a gangster museum and not any other regular type of business he explains that it is a project close to his heart.

38 IMBO/ ISSUE 3/ 2012

“I also want to assist in job creation. Most gangsters go back to crime once they leave prison because they have criminal records and can’t get work.” Although the building that will house the museum is still under construction Daweti’s project is gathering more and more momentum and is looking at an opening in the city centre by June. “I started my classes last year in June and now a year later we are ready to launch this project.” Just one year in the life of this dedicated student is all it took to change his world and ours for the better.

CAREER ADVICE

Wisdom for work: Career tips for first timers and newbie`s Zane Green

Experience is critical – but how do you get it if you haven’t got any?

“Oh, for a life of sensations, rather than that of thoughts.”

Having experience not only makes you more attractive to an employer, but it also gives you valuable insight into what kind of work you do and don’t like. Plus, it builds you inner confidence which makes you stronger in interviews. A key way to build experience is through job shadowing and internships. There are many companies that offer internship programs and if you find a company you like ask them if they have one and if not, ask if they will allow you to job shadow. The benefits to you are: •

You get to understand the job as well as the people that connect to that job, so you get clearer about how you fit into the work puzzle.

You see the job in reality and often assumptions are challenged, so you are more realistic with yourself, putting you on stronger footing in terms of what you can and cannot do. This builds inner credibility.

You connect with new people in your industry and broaden your network, one of these people may know someone looking for someone like you.

You get to experience what you do and do not like in a job. This will help you focus on what is important to you and what to look out for when seeking a job.

You get to feel what work life is really like and this builds confidence for you when you are looking for that first job.

To CV or not to CV – yes, we all need a good CV, but that is not all... •

Often good reference letters also help enormously, so ask your lecturers or teachers to write a reference letter for you.

When you have completed an intern program, ask you main boss in that program for a reference letter too.

As you may know, getting a good CV together is in itself an art, so research and make sure you know the elements of a good CV that makes you stand out. Ask someone you respect to read your CV and give you objective feedback.

Wait it out a bit... Don’t just grab the first thing that comes your way!

Yes, I know its money and experience but taking a job for the sake of it may come at a hidden cost. • Choosing work that you enjoy builds your self esteem and also comes through in your next job interview. Choosing work you hate may break you down and eat up your mojo! •

When we do work we enjoy it become energizing for us, so we build momentum and become more positive.

Make sure the work is also aligned to your career goals, that way you are building on your success every day.

culture shock Growing up is never an easy task, its even worse having to adjust to your surroundings. Now add travelling the country to the mash and attending seven schools in a schooling career before settling down in one place. Lesley is my name, born to Phumlani and Mapute Mphanga. My parents were Christian missionaries and since I was born we have been on the move until we finally settled in Cape Town. I have been to four primary schools and three high schools. From preschool to grade2 I attended Malvern primary in Durban. Then when I was seven years old I lost my dad, he was murdered over an argument that involved a lady. Ironically he used to say never argue with a fool. We then moved to Nelspruit in Mpumalanga where I attended another two primary schools Ensani Primary and Mastulu Primary. We spent three years there and I learnt isiSwati. Living there was beautiful; we were not far from the boarder of the Kruger national park. We would sometimes hear lions roaring and see elephants. I remember an incident there by my sister was doing the washing with my mom outside and they were using one of those zinc baths, as they were busy my sister was startled by a lion’s roar and she

A Little Of Everything Lesley Mphanga jumped into the bath with the washing, we laughed and still joke about that. Then we moved to Cape Town and it seems like we have settled. It was a struggle learning isiXhosa because I was used to speaking English since I was raised speaking English. Unlike when I lived in other places the kids I was around were not as accommodating and tolerant that I spoke English making it harder for me to learn the language. At one stage I even vowed to never speak the language but realise it did me no good, it took me over three years to learn the language and now I can have a conversation in my Mother tongue. I learnt a lot from that experience. Mainly that whatever you are facing you face alone, even if you get help or you have people putting you down. If you conquer the challenge on one can take that victory away nor feel as bad for letting yourself down for giving up because you did not believe in yourself. I love this country, the people who live in it with our short coming and achievements, like I still have a long road ahead of myself and a lot to learn so do the country as a whole.

nother art exhibition illustrating just how rubbish people are. An other beatnik inspired poet with the same aim. “Fuck this, fuck that.”Every day a new obstacle is thrown into the path of becoming a better person. Charity is bad, Woolworths is bad, the United Nations is bad, Winston Churchill was a prick, Kurt Cobain was a phony, Damien Hirst is a slave to the art market. The ever growing No Logo generation is becoming more and more confused. Most of the people I know hate the corporations, the republicans, globalisation, capitalism, Al Gore. And mostly with some good reasons they relay to me, only before doing another line of coke, oblivious perhaps, to how it came to be in their possession. My social class is the private school elite; a phrase now synonymous with the every wet dream of the people it caters to; the

group of people often targeted as being “hipsters.” The eco conscience, easy prey to the green washed advertisement. This group of people are victims who brought their bad name upon themselves. Their appreciation for anything anti the mainstream and their ability to unflinchingly contradict their views has been picked up by the people they “hate” and now everyone hates them. Hipsters hate hipsters; the term cruelly applied to anyone who could be seen as trendy. Like any sad look at how we treat each other, a person from the same group will bite the ass of someone who was at school with them. A ska glitch dup hop band inciting their hatred of their fellow schoolmates and how they don’t realise they’re slaves to the man. The targets of this song, the schoolmates, will go to the gig, love the music or write an article about the bands innovative style. They hate people who hate what they hate. In essence, they like

very little. They’re an answer to Britain’s “Yah” subculture. And you have to take a step back and think, all this hate, all based around nothing. Its sounds cheesy, maybe like a commentary from a Werner Herzog film. We’ve reduced each other to these groups. I spent time last year with some groups of people who hated capitalism, the system their parents were wrapped up in. But they had blackberry’s , they’d go to the 24 hour engen and try get the woman behind the cigarette counter (probably who had left her children alone in a shack in Khayaletshia to take a taxi for the night shift) to give them smokes for free. When her back was turned they’d pick up the lighters for sale and pocket them surreptitiously. But in addition to being Marxist sympathisers, they were anarchists to, so stealing that stuff “embodied what they believed in.”

t’s a fact that the burning of fossil fuels is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases and, therefore, the biggest contributor to global warming. It’s a fact that eleven out of twelve of the years between 1994 and 2006 were the hottest on record. Using a screen saver on the computer (based on an LCD monitor) emits 1.1 kg of carbon dioxide. Turning on the lights will generate 680 kg of carbon dioxide. Taking a bath uses up to 1.6 kg of carbon dioxide!Riding in a car to school uses 2.3 kg of CO2 (based on driving to school 4 km each way in a car that gets 32 km per gallon). If the Greenland ice sheet melts completely, sea levels will raise all across the world by 6.4 m. A fluorescent light bulb is 75% more energy-efficient than an incandescent bulb. 20% of the world’s electricity comes from waterpower. To make 14 plastic bags, you’d need the same amount of petrol that it would take to drive a car 1.6 km. These are all facts. It is also a fact that In New Zealand, over 50% of their greenhouse gas emissions are caused by sheep and cows (i.e. they burp). They are now trying to curb their emissions. (I am completely serious). “Climate experts say we should tell villagers in developing countries to reduce the amount of cooking smoke they generate to help fix global warming. You know, it’s as if these people don’t hate us enough already. I mean, they live in mud huts, they have

thatch roofs, and their clothes are made of straw. We pull up in a bunch of Humvees and SUVs going, ‘Hey, you want to cut the smoke out of here?’” --Jay Leno What is my point? Well, I think the most vital fact about Global warming that the general public doesn’t seem to understand is that the Earth goes through natural warming and cooling trends. We are naturally in a warming trend now. The reason it is such a big issue right now is that we are INCREASING THE RATE of the warming. So in other words, global warming would be happening right now regardless of human activity. But making it happen this quickly is the part that is BAD.

...it all comes down to this: RESPECT. Respect your surroundings, habitation and the living things that share it with you.

Also, did you know we are currently in an ice age? People seem to think that an ice age is ONLY when the whole earth is frozen. (Technically an ice age is anytime there is naturally ice on the planet. And as long as we have one or two glaciers that haven’t melted, we are in an ice age. We are in the 5th one in earth’s history.) However, the Mayan’s prediction of the world’s ending is upon us. It is 2012. If this be the case, and global warming is the main contributor, all we really can do is slightly slow down the process. We are all very familiar with the campaigns, surveys and activists. In actual fact it all comes down to this: RESPECT. Respect your surroundings, habitation and the living things that share it with you.

A report by Global business intelligence provider GlobalData has stated that South Africa is a prime contender for increases in Uranium mining to be used for the supporting the countries new nuclear power plants . The Department of Energy plans to build a further six nuclear power plants by 2029 in an attempt to lower heavy carbon emissions from coal fired power plants at an estimated cost of R400 billion and R1 trillion. With 21 out of the 90 alleged poachers being arrested in the Kruger National Park and with about 30 convictions this year alone as well as two life sentences handed out says Police spokesman Vasi Naidoo. South Africa is also involved in negotiations with land owners at the border of Mozambique to help facilitate the pursuit of poachers over the border where a large amount of poaching takes place. A treaty with the government of Mozambique has already been signed to create a buffer zone allowing SA officials to pursue poachers further instead of being forced to hand over the chase at the border fence. HOLLAND IS MORE THAN WINDMILLS, TULIPS AND CANALS. IT ALSO HAS CHEESE. NO, SERIOUSLY, THE COUNTRY HAS MANY MORE ATTRACTIONS THAN CHEESE AND WEED, AND COINCIDENTALLY CHEESE IS A BRAND OF WEED. A BRAND DEVELOPED IN THE LITTLE TOWN I LIVED IN. YES, THE LITTLE UNIVERSITY TOWN OF WAGENINGEN WHERE FOREIGNERS FLOCK TO STUDY THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEMP, WEED AND OTHER BOTANIST SUBJECTS THAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. I RECENTLY SAW WITH INTEREST ON THE NEWS THAT THEY HAVE INVENTED AND ARE PROMOTING GRASSHOPPER PIE. IT IS ALSO ONE OF THE COUNTRIES WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF LAND BELOW SEA LEVEL. THERE AREN’T MANY, IF ANY COUNTRIES THIS FLAT, THAT SHARE THEIR ONLY ‘MOUNTAIN’ (I USE THIS TERM VERY LOOSELY) WITH TWO OTHER COUNTRIES OR WITH SO MUCH RECLAIMED LAND WHICH IS SO DENSELY POPULATED YET SO LIBERAL. HOLLAND IS ALSO UNIQUE FOR BEING A COUNTRY WITH AN AMPLE FLOW OF WATER AND GENEROUS AMOUNTS OF WIND. THERE ARE ALSO AN EXCESS AMOUNT OF BOATS, SAILS, BIKES, BIRDS, DYKES, POLDERS, WINDMILLS, FLOWERS, FISH, BRIDGES, CAFÉS, CHEESE, SUPER TALL PEOPLE AND COFFEE SHOPS (THAT DON’T ACTUALLY SELL COFFEE). HOLLAND IS ALSO CERTAINLY UNIQUE IN CLAIMING SUCH A VIBRANT COLOUR - VIVID ORANGE, AS THEIR OWN. I’m not sure about you, but I for one haven’t heard of many other countries where you can be homeless and still have Wi-Fi access. This is not an exaggeration, I have experienced it. I could tell you about the Keukenhof where they have Tulips for days, many named after people like Katie Melua and even Mandela; the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; TheVan Gogh Museum and the home of Rembrandt, or even the delicious stroopwaffels (biscuit type sweet waffles) or the more dubious delights of the Red Light District and coffee shops. However I deem it more engaging to tell you about the Dutch. They tend to cuss in sickness, cuss at the police, eat choco-

late on bread and smoke weed at the airport - getting high before flying. After all, you can’t accurately experience the true nature of a country until you have lived in it- and from both sides of the economic spectrum. Yes, I have lived on both sides. I started out as an aupair in one of the richest streets in the town to being a freelance artist then meeting my dream Italian fiancé only to have my heart broken, whilst finally being kicked out and ending up homeless with Wi-Fi. Yes, this is pretty self-explanatory and quite the makings of a good movie. I began my literal journey taking care of rich kids, discovering that putting ‘hundreds and thousands’ on bread is normal and in the same respect, teaching them that instead of just cheese- to add some tomatoes, lettuce and pepper on it too . They shrugged their noses at the thought until they tasted it.

Welcome to the Dutch. A Hollander is always right and he knows it. With this in mind it is very easy to cope with most Hollanders. If you ever get in an argument with one, tell him he was absolutely right. He will not comprehend this but instead go crazy and try to strangle himself with a tulip. It is not necessary to fake interest for tulips, mills, wooden shoes or cheese. Every Hollander knows you came for the soft drugs and the Amsterdam red-light district which are both widely spread and easy to find. This is true. Even the 8-year-old boy I took care of knows this. The little clogger was the first to point out a ‘coffee shop’ to me as I took him to school on my bicycle. Note, there was no plural - he sat at the back of my bicycle with a type-writer on his lap and his hockey stick in my left hand with the other steering us. We have all heard about the quantity of the 9 million bicycles

in Beijing but no one has credited the Dutch for their quality ‘fietsing skills.’ I once cycled with an entire content of a shopping trolley on my bicycle. That was when my skills developed immensely from freewheeling downhill whilst intoxicated after a night at a club. I now mourn the loss of my favourite pair of heels.

remember to seek unsecured internet connections if the need arises. ‘Wel Gezellig,’ as the Dutch would say. This is loosely translated as ‘good times.’ Simply put, there is no place like the Netherlands.

If choosing to holiday in Holland do not bother hiring a car. Not only will you be able to steal more bikes than you can us, but car traffic in Holland is not something one would enjoy whilst on holiday. This country is so small that I toured the entire land in one day on a train. It is actually a Kingdom, complete with a Queen and the whole royal shebang. All I was told about this was that I should wear orange on ‘Queen’s Day’, drink lots of beer and participate in the festivities of the street parties and buy from the ‘cheap market stalls’. These were the same streets I met my Italian fiancé on. Coincidentally these were also the streets I ultimately slept on. Okay, so I mostly slept in the cheapest backpackers I could afford but there were those three unforgettable snowy nights sleeping on Church steps. Luckily I had my little Netbook and St John’s had Wi-Fi. In essence, life in the Netherlands is like Queen’s Day- respect the good beer, live in small towns with bicycles, be liberal, be misers with your Euros, meet foreigners and fall in love. Disgrace J.M. Coetzee

I

t’s hard to write a review on a book as momentous as J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace. It’s the kind of book that makes one want to write. But it’s also the kind of book that makes the aspiring writer feel like they will always be the Salieri to Coetzee’s Mozart. Coetzee makes every sentence simple and succinct, yet full of beauty and the horror of South Africa’s situation today. Like “Waiting for the Barbarians”, the novel features character’s and prose that makes the reader look deeper into complicated characters who pose searing faults as well as unusual moral outlooks. He creates character’s that seem to have little humanity or consideration for others, but cannot easily be dismissed. “For a man of his age, fifty-two, divorced, he has, to his mind, solved the problem of sex rather well,” thus is how the reader is introduced to David Lurie, a lecturer of Romantic literature at an unnamed university in Cape Town. Lurie is bored and it is this boredom that leads him to lose interest in “his prostitute” and to begin perusing a young, naïve student of his, Melanie. The affair drives Melanie to near destruction, however, Lurie seems calm and refuses to apologise for his actions once the affair is discovered. As a result, he leaves Cape Town and travels to his daughter, Lucy, who lives on a remote farm in the Eastern Cape.

Lucy’s introduction into the novel could have the reader believe that she will be the calming effect on her arrogant father, but not so. Lucy herself is a troubled character who is ailing from a failed relationship with another woman and now leads a simple and lonely life. She convinces her father to help a middle-aged veterinarian in town, named Bev. Lurie finds himself, a corrupted and to an extent, grotesque character, spending most of his time with innocent dogs, taken to Bev to be euthanized. The bearable arrangement is shattered when Lucy and David are violently attacked on the farm by three men, who seem to have connections to Lucy’s farm hand, Petrus. Lucy approaches her attack and attackers with submission, simply recognising “the price” she must pay for who and what she is. David, however, becomes aggressive and desperate to see justice done, whatever that justice done, whatever it might be. Gruelling and bleak as the novel is, it offers small glimmers of hope as well as almost heartbreakingly beautiful writing, even if they describe harsh realities. Though the attack is obviously the most violent point in the book, it is the passages in which Bev and David euthanize and dispose of the bodies of dogs, which are truly the most depressing and grotesque.

Titanic 3D James Cameron

I

must begin by saying that Titanic is my favourite movie of all time. It may sound typical coming from a girl, and maybe it is a little, but who does not love a good action-packed romance? As the film title fades in, in 3d, one can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia all over again, this time in 3d! Sure, seeing the film at 10years old for the first time, I didn't understand and appreciate all of it fully, but I knew for certain that I loved it. 11 Oscars couldn't be wrong. Yes, aged Rose depicts angles from the general story that she couldn’t possibly have seen since she was mostly caught between Jack and well, and an iceberg, however, the sentiment remains. Even though Billy Zane's eyebrows are still near Drag queen - this time in 3d; I still cringe as Jack's 'I’m the king of the world' as it is being howled and haled into Hollywood's most corny lines of all time; guy20 who falls into the Atlantic and hits a huge propeller still cracks me up in an awkward way; I still feel a substantial amount of hate towards Rose as she complains about being 'so cold' when she gets to float on a large wooden door and Jack with barely a shirt on, remains in the freezing Atlantic water encouraging her to survive. Why didn’t she offer to swop places with him at least for a short while? Also, she had the energy to sing 'Come Josephine' and not notice that her soul mate hadn't spoken in a while and well, died? She let go extremely fast after promising never to let go after she realised that there was a rescue boat. But her heart did go on, finding another wealthy man or perhaps creating her own wealth by continually using the diamond as collateral. And cue Celine. Besides the water being deeper, and the iceberg being more graphic, after a while, you barely remember that the movie is in 3d. This is just another excuse to see Titanic on the big screen again. And who wouldn’t want to? Thank you James Cameron.
