the Cathedral is an absolute must for visitors with its floor mosaic created by friar Pantaleone between 1163 and 1165. Here you will be transported back to times gone by and yet there is something about it that is still so very relevant today and which gives you the sense that past and present share the same destiny. A few steps further on, in the heart of the old town, there is the little Basilica of St. Peter, a Unesco Culture of Peace Messenger Site, and a real jewel of Byzantine art. But Otranto is also sunshine, lakes and an uncontaminated coastline whose beauty cannot fail to amaze. It is the town where two seas merge: the Adriatic and the Ionian. It is also a place where archaic traditions continue to flourish thanks to the desire of its people to hang onto their identity. People in Otranto are welcoming, helpful and warm hearted. Today, as in the past, it is a muse for poets and writers who glean its very essence and embed it in their works. For example, both Maria Corti and Carmelo Bene spent long periods of time in Otranto and were filled with its genius loci. Otranto is a place of dreams, emotions and magic. Once you have visited it, it will remain in your heart forever.

Und natürlich auch archäische Traditionen, die durch den Willen der Einwohner auch heute noch fortgeführt werden. Otranto bedeutet auch Gastfreundlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft. Die Stadt war auch Muse vieler Dichter und Schriftsteller, die sie schon immer in ihren Werken zitierten. Um nur einige zu nennen: Carmelo Bene und Maria Corti, die hier lange Zeit verweilten und sich inspiriert haben. Otranti verkörpert Traum, Emozion und Magie. tranto è una piccola cittadina con poco più di 5.000 abitanti, ricca di storia, tradizioni e di paesaggi naturali e suggestivi. Ѐ un luogo che offre una elevata qualità della vita e che attrae migliaia di turisti ogni anno, grazie anche al suo mare cristallino e alla bellezza di un borgo antico ben preservato nei suoi monumenti e nelle sue architetture. Un borgo che parla chiaramente dell’influenza di diverse culture che qui si sono incontrate nei secoli, mescolandosi ed arricchendosi vicendevolmente. Otranto, infatti, è da sempre considerata la “Porta d’Oriente”, vista la breve distanza che collega le due sponde del Canale d’Otranto. Un mare che ha unito, mai separato, le genti che popolano quest’area del Mediterraneo. Anche nei momenti più tragici vissuti dalla Città, come l’eccidio del 1480 da parte dei turchi, la comunità ha continuato a mantenere aperto il dialogo con l’altro, non si è mai arroccata chiudendosi. E questo è anche uno degli insegnamenti più alti che i Santi Martiri di Otranto ci consegnano da

tranto is a small town with just over 5000 inhabitants, rich in history, traditions and with wonderful, natural landscapes. It offers a good quality of life and attracts millions of tourists every year thanks to its crystal-clear sea and the beauty of its old town with its well preserved monuments and architecture. It is a place that has been clearly influenced by various cultures that have come together over the centuries to create this unique mixture. Otranto has always been considered the “Gateway to the East”, considering the short distance between the two shores of the Canale d’Otranto. It is a sea that has united, rather than separated, the people that inhabit this part of the Mediterranean. Even at the most tragic of times, like the Turkish massacre of 1480, the community maintained a dialogue with the other side, it has never isolated itself. This is one of the greatest lessons the Holy Martyrs of Otranto taught the people of the city after the daunting experience of trying to defend their identity and faith.

tranto ist eine Kleinstadt mit ca. 5.000 Einwohner, reich an Geschichte, Traditionen und einer eindrucksvollen Landschaft. Ein Ort mit hoher Lebensqualität, der auch Dank des kristallklaren Meeres und der herrlichen Altstadt mit seinen zahlreichen Denkmälern jährlich tausende Touristen anzieht. Eine Stadt, die geprägt wurde vom Einfluß verschiedener Kulturen, die sich hier in Jahrhunderten begegeneten und sich gegenseitig vermischten und bereicherten. Tatsächlich wird Otranto seit jeher als “Tor zum Orient” bezeichnet, da die Entfernung der beiden Ufer des “Canale d’Otranto” nur sehr gering ist. Ein Meer, das die Menschen dieser Gegend im Mittelmeerraum immer vereinigt und niemals getrennt hat. Auch in den tragischen Momenten wie dem Blutbad im Jahr 1480 hat die Gemeinde den Dialog anderen gegenüber immer aufrechterhalten und sich nie zurückgezogen. Und dies ist eine der Belehrungen, die uns die “Santi Martiri di Otranto” aus diese erlebten Geschenissen zur Verteidigung ihres Glaubens und ihrer Identität überlieferten. Tra questi siti particolare rilevanza riveste la Grotta dei Cervi al cui interno sono presenti delle raffigurazioni pittoriche di genti vissute oltre 5.000 anni fa. Da quelle prime tracce di vita umana molte sono state le civiltà che si sono susseguite, dai Messapi ai Bizantini, dai Normanni agli Angioini, e via dicendo. Ciascuna di queste ha lasciato propri segni sulla Città e ancora oggi possiamo godere della bellezza di monumenti unici come la Cattedrale con il suo pavimento musivo, il Castello Aragonese, la chiesetta bizantina di San Pietro. Una Città che ha saputo svilupparsi nel tempo guardando alle esigenze della modernità senza mai tradire il suo passato. Oggi Otranto è località turistica che regala le emozioni di un luogo unico che sa raccontarsi e che offre una piacevole ospitalità grazie alla vocazione naturale della comunità all’accoglienza. One of the most interesting sites is the Cave of the Deer which has cave drawings that date back 5000 years. From those very first traces of human life there have been many civilizations that have inhabited Otranto from the Messapians to the Byzantines, from the Normans to the Angevins and so on. Each one of them has left its mark on the town and we can still enjoy the beauty of unique monuments like the Cathedral with its floor mosaic, the Aragonese Castle and the Byzantine Church of St. Peter. Otranto is a town that has developed over the ages, satisfying the needs of modernity yet never betraying its past. tranto (Utràntu in dialetto salentino, Derentò in greco salentino, Ὑδροῦς in greco classico, Hydruntum in latino) è una cittadina italiana della Provincia di Lecce, in Puglia, di circa 5.000 abitanti. È la cittadina più orientale d’Italia, collocata sulla costa adriatica della penisola salentina. Il capo Punta Palascìa, a 5 km dal centro abitato, è il punto geografico più a est della penisola italiana. I collegamenti stradali principali sono rappresentati dalla Strada Statale 16 Adriatica Lecce-Maglie-O-

Otranto, e si continua per altri 16 km. In treno, si raggiunge Lecce e poi si prosegue per Maglie, dove si cambia e si giunge a Otranto. La cittadina è infatti servita da una stazione ferroviaria, capolinea della linea Lecce-Otranto delle Ferrovie del Sud Est. In aereo, si raggiunge l’aeroporto di Brindisi dal quale si potrà giungere a Lecce attraverso un servizio navetta, per poi proseguire per Otranto in treno, in taxi o noleggiando un’auto. Il territorio di Otranto presenta delle caratteristiche geologiche diversificate. Nell’entroterra si notano tufi conchigliari di origine calcarea risalenti al Pliocene; il tratto costiero, invece, offre estesi terrazzi con marcate differenze di livello e dirupi rocciosi di natura carsica.

The Lecce - Otranto line is operated by Ferrovie del Sud Est and Otranto is the final stop on the Lecce-Otranto line. From a geological point of view, Otranto and its surrounding territory is extremely diverse. Inland you can note the presence of fossilised “tufi”, chalky sandstone typical of this area, which goes back to the Pliocene epoch. Whereas along the coast we can see the formation of extensive ledges of various heights, and rocky limestone cliffs.

The climate is rather mild throughout the year, with the lowest temperatures in January (average 6°- 10°) and the highest ones in July and August (average 25°- 30°). Das Klima ist das ganze Jahr über ziemlich mild: im Januar gibt es ca. 6° bis 10°C und im Juli und August liegen die Temperaturen bei 25° bis 30°C. Der jährliche Regenfall beträgt durchschnittlich zwischen 700 und 800 mm. Fast immer gibt es hier starken Wind und erhöhte Luftfeuchtigkeit. Die gesamte Gegend hat eine sehr dichte Vegetation. Die am häufigst vorkommende Pflanzenart, vor allem bei den “Laghi Alimini” ist die Strandkiefer weit verbreitet. Im Unterholz der Kiefernwälder blühen Salbei, Thymian und Brandkraut. In dem ausgedehnten mediterranen Niederwald mit immer grünen Sträucher gedeihen Mastixbäume, Myrte, Thymian, große Flächen mit Klee, Weißdorn und Ackerwinde. In

Altre piante caratteristiche di tutta l’area salentina valorizzano l’agro otrantino: il cappero, il cipollaccio, il rovo, la margheritina pratolina, l’origano, l’ortica, la gramigna, la rughetta selvatica. Tra i sempreverdi il pero selvatico, il leccio e il corbezzolo. Il vero protagonista, tuttavia, di queste zone, rimane l’ulivo. Non dimentichiamo, però, il gelso moro e il fico. I terreni del feudo hydruntino sono adatti alla crescita spontanea di funghi. Per ciò che concerne la fauna, tra i quadrupedi, non si può non citare la volpe e la lepre, animali molto presenti nel territorio di Otranto. Ricordiamo, inoltre, la donnola, il riccio e la faina e, talune volte, si può anche ammirare qualche esemplare di tasso e gatto selvatico. La lucertola, la biscia, il ramarro, la salamandra e il geco si distinguono tra i rettili sauriani; la vipera, tra i rettili velenosi. Molte le specie dei coleotteri. La zona dei Laghi

woods you can find Phlomis fruticosa (Jerusalem sage), Thymus capitatus (thyme) and Salvia triloba (Greek sage). Much of the area around Otranto is covered in Mediterranean scrub including thick evergreen shrubs such as myrtle, thyme, hawthorn and fields of clover and bindweed. There are also marshy areas where sedges grow. It is also worth mentioning the presence of flowering plants such as: gorse bushes, strawflowers and garigue. Along the dunes in Alimini, you’ll find plants such as rosemary, tamarisk, juniper and mastic all growing wildly. Other typical plants of the Salento are: capers, tassel hyacinths, brambles, daisies, oregano, nettles, bermuda grass and wild rocket. Among the evergreens common in this area you can find the wild pear, the holm-oak and the arbutus. Besides the majestic olive tree, which is still a real emblem of this area, we can also find mulberry and fig trees. Mushrooms also grow spontaneously here thanks to the type of soil in Otranto. As far as the fauna is concerned, foxes and hares are common in this area as well as weasels, hedgehogs and stone martens. Badgers and wildcats have also been known to roam here. As for reptiles you can see lizards, grass snakes, green lizards, salamanders and geckos as well as vipers. There are also many species of beatles. The area around the Alimini Lakes boasts a great variety of species of birds and water

Die wahren Protagonisten der Gegend sind jedoch die zahlreichen Olivenbäume. Auch gibt es Feigenbäume, schwarze Maulbeerbäume und zahlreiche Pilzarten. Was die Fauna betrifft, leben hier Vierfüßler wie Wildhasen und Füchse, Mauswieseln, Igel, Steinmarder und vereinzelt Wildkatzen und Dachse, Eidechsen, Nattern, Salamander, Mauergeckos und giftige Schlangen. Bei den Alimini-Seen brüten und nisten Vogelarten wie Sperlinge, Elstern, Wachteln, Waldschnepfen, Tauben, Drosseln, Bläßhühner, Fasane, Enten, Silberreiher und Staren. Das Gebiet südlich von Otranto ist vom Naturpark “Costa Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase” umgeben. Nella prima serata, il Sindaco della cittadina, l’Arcivescovo, le autorità civili, militari e religiose, partono dal palazzo comunale e si recano in corteo presso il “Monumento”, in Piazza degli Eroi. Deposta una corona di fiori, si tiene il discorso commemorativo. In tarda serata, viene organizzata una veglia diocesana per giovani sul colle del martirio, per rinnovare il perenne messaggio di speranza e di impegno civile degli Ottocento. Il 14 agosto, in Cattedrale, ha luogo il solenne pontificale. Nel pomeriggio, si svolge la processione con l’urna contenente le reliquie dei Santi Martiri trasportate per le vie della città dai sacerdoti della diocesi hydruntina. Le
Early in the evening, the Mayor of the town, the Archbishop, the civil, military and religious authorities leave the Town Hall and walk in procession towards the “Monument” in Piazza degli Eroi. After laying a wreath, there is the memorial speech. Late in the evening, a diocesan vigil is organised for young people on the hill of the Martyrs, in order to renew the eternal message of hope and civil commitment of the eight hundred Martyrs. On 14th August, there is a special liturgy in the Cathedral officiated by the Archbishop. This is followed in the afternoon by a procession with the urn containing the Holy Martyrs’ relics carried through the streets of the town by

Qui, riprendendo un rito che risale al 1600, il Sindaco di Otranto consegna la chiave della Città al santo, quella stessa chiave che il podestà dell’epoca consegnò all’arrivo della statua in legno, realizzata dalla scuola veneziana.

The 2nd April is the Saint’s feast day, but it is actually celebrated on a Sunday in May, which varies from year to year. The procession starts from the hill of the Martyrs and ends up near Porta Terra. Here, according to an ancient ritual, which dates back to 1600, the Mayor of Otranto gives the key of the city to the Saint. It is the same key that the magistrate of that time handed over to the wooden statue of the saint, which was made by the Venetian school.
Einwohner zeigten sich deshalb dankbar gegenüber San Francesco di Paola und ernannte ihn zum Mitschutzheiligen der Stadt. Jährlich am 2. April wird diese religiöse Feierlichkeit zelebriert, doch das eigentliche Fest wird erst an einem Sonntag im Mai gefeiert. Die Prozession beginnt auf dem Hügel der Märtyrer und endet bei Porta Terra. Bei einem Ritual aus dem 17. Jh. übergibt der Bürgermeister dem Heiligen die Stadtschlüssel, den selben, der vom damaligen Stadtvogt an die in einer venezianischen Schule gefertigten Holzstatue übergeben wurde.

La chiesetta della Madonna dell’Altomare quel giorno diventa centro spirituale della città e simbolo di identità della sua gente. In tale festa ognuno riconosce l’accogliente anima turistica di Otranto, l’anima di coloro che, sul mare, si spendono per la sicurezza e la pace, l’anima di coloro che dal mare traggono sostentamento con la pesca e con i commerci. Nel pomeriggio, la solenne celebrazione dell’Eucarestia è officiata dall’Arcivescovo nel piazzale antistante la chiesa. Sono i pescatori di Otranto ad accompagnare la statua della Vergine, pregevole opera di fine Ottocento, nel piazzale suddetto per la celebrazione della Messa e subito dopo al “Fascio” per l’imbarco. La processione a mare ha così inizio. Il peschereccio che accoglie la sacra statua viene scortato da alcuni marinai, ai quali, tra l’altro, viene affidata la corona che verrà gettata in acqua in memoria di tutte le vittime del mare. L’imbarcazione da pesca, seguita da un nutrito gruppo di altre barche, traghetta il simulacro della Madonna. Dopo un breve giro nella baia di Otranto, si sbarca al porto e si ritorna, in processione, alla cappella. Alba dei Popoli Otranto, luogo simbolo del Mediterraneo è crocevia di culture, intreccio di etnie, come testimoniano molti suoi monumenti e la sua storia passata e recente. On that day, the little church of the Madonna dell’Altomare becomes the spiritual centre of the town and a focus point for its people. It’s a day when Otranto excels at welcoming visitors while celebrating those who dedicate their lives, at sea, to guaranteeing the safety and peace of others, not to mention those who derive a living from fishing or trade. In the afternoon, the liturgy of the Eucharist is officiated by the Archbishop in the square in front of the church. The fishermen of Otranto accompany the statue of the Virgin, a fine work of art dating back to the late nineteenth century, to the square for the Mass and then to the “Fascio” where it is put on a boat in preparation for the procession at sea. The fishing boat hosting the holy statue is escorted by sailors, who also carry a wreath of flowers with them, which they then throw into the water in memory of those who have lost their lives at sea. The fishing boat, followed by a procession of many other boats, takes the statue of the Madonna across the bay of Otranto to the port and from here it is carried in procession back to the chapel. Alba dei popoli Otranto, a symbolic town on the Mediterranean Sea, is a crossroads of cultures and a melting pot of ethnic groups, as many of its monuments and its past and present history show. L’evento è caratterizzato da una serie di iniziative dedicate al mondo femminile tra incontri, musica e mostre. Tutta la città si tinge di rosa. annual fair dedicated to art, cultural events, music and performances. “Alba dei popoli” is an initiative inspired by the symbolic power of the New Year, or as it is called, the “first smile of the Sun” on Italy. Every year, in fact, during the Christmas holidays, the Town of the Martyrs plans almost a month of different events to remind everyone that the first light of the New Year arrives in Italy first in the Salento, and more precisely in Otranto. Since its first edition in 1999, the festival has seen the participation of numerous international artists and intellectuals. Its key moment is the huge concert in the square on 31st December.

The Pink Night This event takes place in late June and opens the summer season. It is characterised by a series of initiatives such as meetings, concerts, exhibitions, literature and fashion dedicated to women. The whole town turns pink on this night as the shops, bars and restaurants, decorate their windows with touches of pink and keep their doors open till late.

Fest SS. Pietro e Paolo Am 28. und 29. Juni gibt es auf dem Platz “Piazza dei Popoli” zahlreiche Aufführungen und Stände mit önogastronomischen Produkten. Die Altstadt belebt sich und feiert ein von den Einwohnern tiefempfundenes Fest alter Traditionen. Am Abend dann gibt es Livemusik und Veranstaltungen.
Il centro storico prende vita e celebra una sagra antica, iniziativa molto sentita dalla gente del luogo. La sera, poi, tanta buona musica dal vivo e spettacoli. Tavole di S. Giuseppe La festa di S. Giuseppe cade il 19 marzo. La devozione nei confronti di questo santo si concretizza nella tradizione delle “tavole”. Al di là dell’aspetto religioso, una volta esse rappresentavano la mensa dei poveri; oggi, sono simbolo di ospitalità verso tutti, turisti compresi. Le “tavole” vengono allestite in case private, scuole e oratori, e offerte a S. Giuseppe per ricevere la sua protezione, per chiedere una particolare grazia o per adempiere a un voto.

St. Joseph’s Banquet The feast of St. Joseph is celebrated on 19th March when tables laden with food are set up in homes, schools and church halls in devotion to the saint, to ask for his protection, a special intention or for a grace received. Originally they were set up to feed the poor but today they are a symbol of hospitality towards everybody, including tourists.
Heiligen gegenür verwirklicht sich durch die Tradition der “Tavole”. Diese rappräsentierten einst die Tafel der Armen; heute dagegen gelten sie als Symbol aller Menschen, Touristen eingeschlossen. Die “Tavole” werden in Privatwohnungen, Schulen und Oratorien vorbereitet. Sie werden S.Giuseppe gewidmet, um ihn um Schutz oder eine besondere Gnade zu bitten ode ein Gelöbnis zu halten.

Otranto Jazz Festival È un evento organizzato dall’Associazione Culturale Otranto Jazz Festival, un omaggio alla musica che ha attraversato un intero secolo. Il festival ha luogo nel mese di luglio ed è strutturato in tappe itineranti in diversi comuni del territorio salentino, facendo sempre capo a Otranto. Numerosi gli artisti di fama internazionale che si sono esibiti sul palco dell’OJF: Noa, Cesare Picco e Taketo Gohara, Garrison Fewell, Tina May, Jullian Arguelles, Jeremy Brown, Frank Harrison, Steve Keog, Gegé Telesforo, Tuck & Patty, Elien Lazo Cuban European Band, Eleina Dennis Quartet, i Radiodervish. Settimana della Cultura Unesco Ѐ una rassegna estiva a cura del Club Unesco di Otranto che promuove le tematiche della pace e del dialogo tra i popoli. Si caratterizza per un palinsesto ricco di eventi, che catalizzanno l’attenzione dei numerosi ospiti della Città dei Martiri: dagli incontri con autori del panorama locale e nazionale a dibattiti e tavole rotonde, con uno spazio per l’intrattenimento musicale, il reading di poesia, il teatro, la fotografia d’autore e l’arte. Tra gli ospiti delle passate edizioni: Oliviero Beha, Luciano Garofano, Fatos Lubonja, Alessandro Leogrande, Davide Maldi, Cataldo Motta, Paolo Ruggiero, Mario Desiati, Antonino Monteleone, Nabil Salameh, Ilaria Cavo, Oliviero Malaspina, Maria Eloy Garcia, Nelson Martinico. Unesco Culture Week The Unesco Club in Otranto promotes a summer festival centred on the themes of peace and dialogue among peoples. It offers a rich programme of events that attract the attention of the numerous visitors to the Town of Martyrs: from meetings with local and national authors to debates and workshops. There is also a space for musical entertainment, poetry readings, theatre, fine art photography and art. Among the guests of previous editions are: Oliviero Beha, Luciano Garofano, Fato Lubonja, Alessandro Leogrande, Davide Maldi, Cataldo Motta, Paolo Ruggiero, Mario Desiati, Antonino Monteleone, Nabil Salameh, Ilaria Cavo, Oliviero Malaspina, Maria Eloy Garcia and Nelson Martinico. During the festival, the “City of Otranto - Messenger of Peace” award is presented to someone who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of the culture of peace and the defence of human rights.
