Introduction Dear IFMSA Members, IFMSA has 13 horizontal and thematic Programs, each Program has a Program Coordinators. Activities (projects) conducted by National Member Organisations (NMOs) of IFMSA at local, national, regional, and international levels by IFMSA NMOs are affiliated with IFMSA Programs through Enrollment and Reporting. Activity coordinators ( project or initiative organizers, planner, and coordinators) from IFMSA NMOs (full, associate or candidates members), can enroll and then their Activities (projects, initiatives, events, etc) with IFMSA Programs, thus affiliating the activities with IFMSA Programs and be a part of the global network of impactful activities endorsed by IFMSA. Background Why IFMSA Programs? Every IFMSA NMO works on at least one project/activity dealing with a relevant local or national health issue. Projects/activities are at the heart of IFMSA. Activities are moving to make a youth lead difference in the country, region, and the world at large. IFMSA Programs are a keystone in the IFMSA structure to bridge the national and local activities of the NMOs to the international activities of IFMSA aka ‘Think Global Act Local.’ Each of the 13 IFMSA Programs addresses problems with each theme of the Program, through the focus areas of each program, that we as medical students and global health advocates stand up for while connecting local, national, and international activities and opportunities that contribute to the final outcome. NMOs conduct activities locally and nationally and are encouraged to officially affiliate these activities with IFMSA, by enrolling the activities with the IFMSA programs. NMO members are encouraged to learn the art of activity design and evaluation Finally, help our federation to calculate & evaluate the IMPACT of activities conducted across the world by different NMOs by reporting on the enrolled activities.

What are exactly IFMSA Programs? Definition IFMSA Programs is an authorized IFMSA body to affiliate activities conducted by the IFMSA National Member Organizations to the relevant IFMSA program through an application process. Activities affiliated under IFMSA Programs include but are not limited to: Projects, Campaigns, Celebrations, Workshops, Fundraisers, Events, Exchanges, etc. Full, associate, and candidate members of IFMSA are eligible to apply for activities affiliation to IFMSA Programs. History Before the IFMSA Programs structure was adopted in AM2014, there existed a Project Support division. Each General Assembly 15 to 20 activities were voted per GA to be officially affiliated with IFMSA. To increase the number and quality of the IFMSA affiliated and thus IFMSA promoted activities and to streamline the process of affiliation of activities with IFMSA, IFMSA Programs were initiated after almost two years of systematic planning and IFMSA program proposals at the General Assemblies. 201516 was the year where the first generation of the Program Coordinators was rolled out. Since then over 1000 activities have been enrolled and affiliated with IFMSA programs.

IMPACT! Programs Structure IFMSA Programs are designed with a backbone of The Theory of Change each year the progress of every expected outcome is tracked with the Programs Annual Impact Report. Each Program has a Program Coordinator and a Program Proposal with a detailed description. The Program Description contains the following elements: Theme Description, The end goal of the Program, Target Group and Beneficiaries of Interventions, Logical Framework of Interventions including expected outcomes and assumptions, and finally Tools for Monitoring and Evaluation:   i. Expected outcomes   ii. Indicators of Success   iii. Threshold As of 2020, there are 13 programs in IFMSA. IFMSA Programs address problems within a specific field that we as medical students and global health advocates stand up for while connecting local, national, and international activities and opportunities that contribute to the final outcome.All IFMSA Programs connect the work of NMOs locally and nationally with the IFMSA vision and mission. NMOs decide which programs are to be adopted by IFMSA by voting on the programs proposed by the Executive Board and Team of Officials during the General Assembly. All NMOs and members of NMOs locally and nationally are encouraged to join an IFMSA Program through enrolling their activities, whether that be projects, campaigns, celebrations, workshops, events, trainings, or theme-based publications. These activities are coordinated locally, nationally, or internationally with the help and support from Program Coordinator and the relevant Standing Committee Director. Therefore, helping programs grow is also indirectly impacting the world leaders on the changes we want to see in the future.

Programs Team and Programs Coordinators and How can they help you? Each program has a program coordinator; a medical student specializes in the specific topic of their program and ready to help all the activity coordinators. The program coordinators are appointed by the Executive Board with the VicePresident of Activities as the Contact Person. Programs Coordinators begin the term on October 1st. Programs coordinators have various tasks to improve the impact of their program, contribute to the education and capacity building efforts related to the program, work with the relevant Standing Committees to further the Advocacy efforts, and at large work towards the general promotion of the programs and general programs related operational tasks.

The most important tasks of the program coordinators are to help activity coordinators around the world regarding all the program administration; enrollment, reporting, and impact assessment. Those steps are explained further in this toolkit. Program Coordinators also are specialists regarding their program; they are full of resources, knowledge, and example of activities on their program. Feel free to contact the program coordinators for any help at any moment! The program team also includes a Program Support Assistant in charge of assisting Vice -President for Activities coordinating the Program Coordinators in their tasks. The program team is completed with the IFMSA Vice-President for Activities who supervises the work of the whole team.

How to Enroll your Activities with IFMSA Programs? In order to enroll your activities with IFMSA Programs, you need to have an activity (projects, conferences, webinars, workshops, campaigns) that should be in line with the IFMSA Programs’ objectives, focus areas and goals. To begin you have decided to enroll your activity to IFMSA Programs and further figure out which program your activity belongs to? Refer to the Focus Areas of the Programs HERE and determine the best-suited Program. There are only 2 steps that need to be taken. 1. Fill the Activity Enrollment Form : HERE   • The Activity Enrollment Form is a Google Form questionnaire for Activity Coordinators to fill in all the required information about their activity online. (Detailed explanation of each question in the Activity Enrollment Form is in the next section of the Toolkit) 2. Submit your Candidature Form : HERE   • Candidature Form is a single-paged document of legal importance that needs to be signed and stamped from the NMO President/Representative of the Activity Coordinator. It needs to be filled accordingly and submitted into the Activity Enrollment Form.   • Please understand the submission of the Activity Enrollment Form cannot be complete without submitting the Candidature Proof. After taking care of these 2 steps, the only thing left is waiting for your feedback from the related Program Coordinator. It usually takes 2 weeks after you submit your information to the Activity Enrollment Form.

The Activity Enrollment Form consists of basically two main chapters. The first one is the General Information, where you’ll be asked to fill in your personal and activity information. The second part is to understand your Activity Structure and Design. The Program Coordinator will be focusing on the second chapter to decide, as per the mandate, to affiliate or to reject the activity. We hope that the detailed description of the questions in this section will help you fill your Activity Enrollment Correctly, in case of any doubt contact the relevant Program Coordinator or Program Support Assistant. While trainings can have any form, workshops are more formal, and also include the exchange of information between participants. Education Education on health issues for specific societal groups, either in the form of projects (set of tasks for a certain group over a fixed period of time), events (something notable that happens) or conferences (form meetings about ideas related to a particular topic, usually over several days). Advocacy Series of efforts with the goal to influence policies or decisionmakers on a certain topic. Campaign Combination of education and advocacy. Campaigns create awareness in society about a certain topic (education aspect) and try to funnel this awareness into pressure on the decision-makers to adopt policies accordingly (advocacy aspect). Research Collection of data to estimate the scope of a problem but also to evaluate the impact of other Activities. Third-party activity; Supporting an individual or a group to tackle an issue, either in the form of fundraising (collecting money) or operative work (help with administrative tasks of other organizations or communities). If you feel that your activity does not belong to any of the listed categories then the type of category must be mentioned in the “others� option. If you have difficulties filling this question, feel free to ask your program coordinator.

IMPACT! What is the general First-time Activity. Newly designed Activity enrolling for the temporal layout of first time with a fixed timeline with no concrete intention to be your Activity? established for a long time (yet). Replicating Activity. Activity that is inspired by another Activity of similar design, for example by an Activity from another NMO. Continuous Activity. First-time enrollment. Activity that has never been enrolled and that already existed or has a solid plan to exist for multiple terms. Continuous Activity. Enrollment renewal. The activity has already existed for multiple terms and has previously been enrolled. Target groups, objectives, or methods have changed significantly since the last enrolment. For this question, you’ll need to know if you plan to do your activity for another year. If so, your activity is considered continuous and should be reported yearly. The program coordinators will followup on you for the report in the following years. If not, choose between first time reporting and replicating activity (activity inspired by other activity of similar design) If your activity is continuous, kindly choose if this is the first time you are enrolling you activity with IFMSA Programs or due to multiple changes in the Activity Design and Structure are renewing the Enrollment. Upload your completed Candidature Form in the Activity Enrollment Form. Kindly convert the document into the PDF format before uploading the form. As a general rule, the candidature form should be signed and stamped by the NMO president of the Activity coordinator. If there are two activity coordinators then of the primary activity coordinator. Activity Structure Which Program would you like to affiliate your Activity to?

You need to mark the Program that you’d like your Activity to be enrolled in. Needs to one of 13.

What is the Focus Area(s) of your Activity

After choosing your IFMSA Program, you need to choose what Focus Areas that you concentrated on your Activity. You can check all the boxes that you aimed to encapsulate with your Activity. It may be more than one but it’s better to be precise. You can find the list of the focus areas HERE.

Problem Statement In this section, you need to help the Program Coordinator to understand why you have organized the activity, its relevance to community needs, and the mission of the organizer (IFMSA or its NMOs). A good problem statement should be concise, specific, and measurable; the problem should be stated clearly with sufficient contextual details to establish its importance. It should tell:   1. What the problem is;   2. Who has the problem;   3. Where the problem occurs;   4. When the problem occurs;   5. How the problem impacts the community its relevant to; It’s also valuable to include evidence/statistical information to support the cause and the aim of the activity. Target Groups

Target groups include the primary beneficiary of the activity and refers to the community or group of people to whom the activity is directly addressed. Target Group is also often called as the Target audience. This question is in the checkbox style questions so you can choose all relevant Target Groups. Ideally, for a good activity One or Two Target Groups is optimum but if you are activity has more than two target groups don’t worry your Program Coordinator will be able to help you.

Beneficiaries

Beneficiaries are simply everyone, or larger groups of people more than the target group, who are benefitting from your Activity. Beneficiaries can also be all the stakeholders of the activity. Conducting a stakeholder mapping can help you map-out the Beneficiaries.

IMPACT! Objectives

Objectives are the steps for you to be taking while achieving your goal. They need to be SMART • S : Specific • M : Measurable • A : Achievable/ Attainable/ Assignable/ Agreed • R : Realistic/ Relevant/ Reasonable/ Resourced • T : Time-Bound/ Time oriented/Time limited/ Timeline and duration In addition, objectives typically should be in line with the target audience and beneficiaries. And further, it should contribute to the possible solutions. This section is one of the most important parts of the whole questionnaire, so you need to be paying your utmost attention while filling this one.

Success Indicators

Indicators of success define the success of objectives implementation and help monitor the progress of the work on the objectives of the activities. It means that once you have finished working with an objective, you need to check your indicator if it’s matched with your expectations. Indicators should be specific and clear, designed according to each objective, and easy to measure.

Methodology

This part you have to describe in detail, in a step-by-step manner how you plan to implement or have implemented your activity and the objectives of your activity. Do write details of the timeline of the activity, resources to be or used for the activity and roles and responsibilities of different team members and volunteers.

Plans for Evaluation While you are responding to this question, you need to explain the following: • Does a post-activity evaluation strategy exist? • Does a pre-activity assessment exist? • Are there plans for monitoring the progress of the activities while it is happening? • Does it cover all the objectives and goals at large? • What is the nature of the evaluation strategy:- qualitative/ quantitative in character? IMPACT!

How to Report your activities with IFMSA Programs? Link to the Activity Report Form HERE Reporting is an essential step for programs since it’s the way the cumulative impact of the activities of the NMOs and indirect impact of IFMSA is calculated by the IFMSA Programs. Every enrolled activity has to be reported by using the Reporting Form (HERE) before June 15th of every year. The best moment to fill the reporting form is right after the evaluation of your activity is finished and you have the impact assessment ready to be shared. Continuous activities that take place over several years also have to report annually. The reporting information is used to prepare the Program Annual Impact Report which is presented during the IFMSA August Meeting.

Programs Annual Impact Report (PAR) Programs Annual Impact Report present IFMSA Programs achievement in the respective term. PAR introduces the programs in general and more importantly reports on the global impact of activities conducted by IFMSA NMOs, through the data received from the activities affiliated with IFMSA Program, by Enrolling and Reporting activities with IFMSA Programs before the 15th of June of the respective term. E.g.: 2019 - 2020 term Programs Annual Impact report will cover the period from 16th of June 2019 and 15th of June 2020. The report discusses major statistics and data collected from IFMSA Programs throughout the term, presenting the number of enrollments and reporting in each program, also the contributions of the NMOs, etc. The basic activities data for each program include:

It is through the Programs Annual Impact Report that the impact of the local activities and efforts of IFMSA NMOs is represented by IFMSA on the global advocacy stage. Programs Annual Impact Report are presented at each IFMSA August Meeting, further, this report has to be approved by the IFMSA NMOs.

Baseline Assesment The Baseline Assessment (BA) is the initial task which the 1st Program Coordinator of the relevant Program must organize in order to set the basis for the development of the Program. A program coordinator should conduct a baseline assessment amongst IFMSA NMOs in terms of the respective theme of the Program at the beginning of the first term of the Program. The Baseline Assessment aims to provide IFMSA an idea of the impact Activities of NMOs and IFMSA currently have on the goals of the Program. This will be used for comparison with the impact of the Program at a later time.

Frequently Asked Questions    Can one activity belong to more than 1 Program?    Although activity can be enrolled under 2 Programs, it is highly recommended to enroll the activity just under one Program which objectives correspond more precisely to the objectives of the activity - in order to prevent the overlapping of measuring the impact. Program Coordinators work constantly towards eliminating overlaps between Programs.   My activity deals with topics of several programs. What can I do?    First of all, make sure to the Focus Areas of the Programs HERE, so that you get a clear overview of each program. In case the main topics of your activity come from 2 programs, you can enroll under both of them (remember you will have to fill the Activity Enrollment twice and correspondingly fill the Activity Report for twice as well, once for each Program). We recommend that you Enroll and Report your activity with one program, to which the majority of your objectives are related to. You are not allowed to enroll in an activity under more than 2 different programs.   Are candidate NMOs allowed to submit activities?    According to IFMSA Bylaws: “Full, associate and candidate members of    IFMSA are eligible to apply for activities affiliation to IFMSA Programs.

IMPACT!   Who can one enroll in an activity?    Every IFMSA Member can enroll the activities they have planned, designed, organized, and coordinated with IFMSA Programs. We call these IFMSA members as Activity Coordinators. An Activity Coordinator needs NMO support through the candidature form HERE, but she/he/ they are not obligated to have a local/national/international position to do so    If the activity is a permanent (repeated) project in my NMO, can I submit it for more than one term at once?     • If the Activity is a permanent project and completed over a period of more than one year, it can be enrolled as a Continuous Activity. For the duration of years the activity (project) is being continued, each year before the 15th of June the activity coordinator for that year has to submit the Activity Report for that year.     • If the design of the Activity and the structure of the Activity has changed considerably since the original enrollment, you are requested to Re-Enroll the activity as the “Continuous Activity Enrollment renewal.”   Why should I enroll my activity in an IFMSA Program?    Please refer to the ‘Benefits of enrollment’ for this concern.    My activity is a collaborative project between different NMO’s - how should we enroll?    Only one of the partner NMOs needs to sign the Candidature Form and fill the Activity Enrollment Form, there is a question in the Activity form “ NMOs involved in the activity” where it can be indicated in detail the contribution of all involved NMOs. You can find more details about this in the Detailed Overview and Explanation of the Enrollment form section of this Toolkit.   What if my activity’s name is not in English?    You can mention the original name as well, but you must provide the English translation also because English is the official language of IFMSA.    Can I enroll in an activity that happened in the past, but no longer happening and never been enrolled?    Yes, you can enroll an activity also retrospectively. You just have to mention the relevant term.    What happens if you don’t report your activity by the 15th of June?    You can still do this after, but it will appear in the next year’s Annual Impact Report.    Are there any consequences if I choose not to enroll in an activity?    No consequences as such, but it is better to enroll and be a part of a global network of impactful activities.

If I enrolled my activity as a continuous one but in the meantime, I got to collaborate with partners with a new partner or sponsor, what do I do?    You should inform the respective PC as soon as possible. The Program Coordinator will check the eligibility of the partner and sponsor with the IFMSA Ethical Framework in Fundraising. If there are no red flags the enrollment continues as it is. If there are red flags then, for the period while you collaborate with those partners your activity will lose its status of an IFMSA recognized activity. However, you can still re-enroll it once your partners fit the IFMSA criteria.    Can my faculty be considered a partner to my activity?    Yes, if it provides you the space for your activity or if you collaborate with some of the faculty staff.    How can I have access to what I wrote in the ‘Enrollment Form’?    We suggest you work on the content on a document that you can keep as a reference to go back to when you’d like to check out something on your enrollment. This can be part of your LC/NMO institutional memory as well. You can also reach out to the respective PC for any information you’d like to find out on your activity.   Do I have to renew enrollment every year?     • You have to do this only for activities enrolled as “First Time Activities” or “Replicating Activities”, in order to retain their status as enrolled. If your activity is planned to continue for more than a year, we suggest that you enroll your activity as “ Continuous Activity”. For more information contact a Program Coordinator.    • If the target group, objectives or methods have changed significantly since last enrollment for a “Continuous Activity”, then you have to renew the enrollment.   What happens if I don’t report my activity?    • There are 2 distinct scenarios: If your activity is enrolled as continuous and you fail to report it for two consecutive terms, then this activity automatically loses its enrolled status and you will need to enroll it again.    • For the first time or replicating activities, failing to provide a report doesn’t have any consequences. However, you should note that by not providing a report or your activity, you hinder PCs from measuring the impact of your activities and you deprive IFMSA of valuable data that could be used in our external work and collaborations.    How can I reach an activity coordinator working on the same topic as me?    The first step would be to inform the relevant PC of this fact. If you have agreed to share your personal contact information (see GDPR disclaimer), the PC helps you establish contact with another activity coordinator who has also agreed to share their personal information.    How will IFMSA use the private information asked in the enrollment form?    Please refer to the GDPR disclaimer included in the enrollment form.

What can I do if the PC doesn’t communicate with me?    • If you do not get a reply from the Program Coordinator, feel free to contact the Vice-President of Activities at vpa@ifmsa.org    • If you haven’t received an answer from the Program Coordinator after 14 days of filling the Activity Enrollment Form, contact Vice-President for Activities as vpa@ ifmsa.org    How do I enroll an activity which has already been enrolled in the previous term?    • For the first time or replicating activities, you have to repeat the enrollment process every term. Using the feedback from the previous term, you won’t have a hard time submitting a high-quality activity.    • For continuous activities, you don’t need to renew the enrollment, unless the problem statement, objectives, or methodology have changed significantly.    • For more questions feel free to contact a program coordinator or VPA.    How do you use the impact assessment submitted through the Activity Report Form/ the reporting process?    The information provided in the reporting process is mainly used in two ways: the IFMSA Programs Annual Impact Report and the external work coordinated by the Liaison Officers. In the first case, all PCs statistically analyze the data gathered from reported activities to reveal the Federation’s impact on the different focus areas. As for external work, data from various Programs can be used in external meetings to showcase IFMSA’s impact on a global level and enhance our status as a stakeholder for global health issues.    How many coordinators must an activity have?    You can have a maximum of two coordinators per activity and they must belong to the same NMO. In case more than one activity coordinator from more than one NMO or more than two activity coordinators from the same NMO are involved in the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of the activity, you can internally select who will be the contact person with the PC.    How should I approach a Program Coordinator for activity-related support?    It is recommended that you approach your PC at least 4 weeks before the schedule of the activity to receive assistance. However, you may approach them whenever you need suggestions or opinions by emailing them on their official mail ID. You may schedule an OLM or work on informal modes of communication such as Whatsapp further on.

In case the Program Coordinator suggests corrections to me, must I enroll the activity again?    • Ideally yes. In case your Program Coordinator has suggested major corrections for the enrolment details, they may contact you via mail and suggest corrections. You should re-enroll your activity with the same candidature form with the necessary corrections. This is done to ensure a certain level of quality for IFMSA activities and to help you reach a higher level of organization and quality so that your activity can reach its full potential and achieve maximal impact.    • You should irrespectively correct all suggested details communicated by the Program Coordinator when you fill the Activity Report Form    A replicating activity counts as continuous or not for enrollment and reporting purposes?    A replicating activity is seen as a first time activity for the purposes of enrollment and reporting. This means that you need to work on such an activity in the way described above for first-time activities.    I don’t know if my activity will continue being organized by my NMO in the following terms. In which category can it be enrolled?    It would be more advisable to enroll it as a first time activity or replicating activity for the first time so that you have sufficient time to decide for the activity internally in your NMO. If it is decided to continue the activity for more terms, you can renew the enrollment and categorize your activity as continuous. In the opposite case, make sure to inform the PC each term if a continuous activity is being organized again or not.    We started organizing again an activity that used to take place some years ago in my NMO and was previously enrolled. What do I do?    In this case, you should re-enroll your activity as a continuous activity (if you plan to continue the activity for more than a year), or as a replicating activity and continue the enrollment process accordingly. Get in contact with the relevant Program Coordinator as soon as possible, they can help you and support you with the minute details of this process    How can I enroll in an activity that takes place in a similar way in multiple LCs?    • If the activity is coordinated by the same team and activity coordinator, we suggest that you have a word with your NMO President or relevant NMO Official, centralize the process and enroll it as a National Activity.    • If the activity is coordinated by different teams and different activity coordinators, in that case, we suggest you have a word with your NMO President or relevant NMO Official and enroll the activity as a replicating activity. Short Description

Communicable DIseases (CD)

Communicable diseases are a broad group of diseases that are prevalent throughout the world and present a significant challenge to healthcare systems, medical students, and communities in general. Though there has been a major effort to eradicate and improve outcomes of communicable diseases in the last 15 years, there is still an undeniable need to address these issues in a different manner. The IFMSA Program for Communicable Diseases works towards the prevention of CDs, promoting the importance of vaccination, raising awareness about preventable diseases including NTDs, and tackling Antimicrobial resistance.

Emergency, Disaster Risk & Humanitarian Action (EDHA)

Emergencies tend to disproportionately affect the poor, children, women, the elderly, and other marginalized members of society, hence aggravating existing health inequities. Populations on the move due to man-made or natural disasters put pressure on services and these already vulnerable populations. In disasters, human safety is often put into question, especially of the services that are at the forefront such as civil protection or health professionals. Humanitarian action comprises assistance, protection, and advocacy in response to humanitarian needs resulting from natural hazards, armed conflict or other causes, or emergency response preparedness. It aims to save lives and reduce suffering in the short term, and in such a way as to preserve people’s dignity and open the way to recovery and durable solutions to displacement The EDHA program’s end goal is Investing in prevention and preparedness, especially of health systems and safe environment while having empowered future health professionals that will be able to address disaster while ensuring humanitarian support to the ones in need. Creating a resilient and safe health system equipped to tackle hazards and prevent them from turning into a disaster.

Environment & Health (EH)

Environment and health is a very broad topic that includes the impact of the climate, water, food production and air pollution on the health of our population. From local activities of cleaning the plastic out of rivers to awareness campaigns towards medical students to international advocacy, the aim of this program is to fight climate change. It also included how our medical systems are responding and contributing to the biggest threat to health of the century! Together, we can take care of our planet, and our health.

Ethics & Human Rights in Health (EHRH)

Ethics and Human Rights in health give medical students an opportunity to be involved in topics that facilitate an exchange of relevant peace, health and human right-oriented knowledge within a framework of ethics, instilling responsibility. Highlighting doctor-patient relationship, rights and responsibilities of healthcare professionals and patients, correlation of human rights and its impact on health and the system, organ and human trafficking and an integrating attempt to create a peaceful world, we encourage you to address to the local issues with a global outlook.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most widespread human rights violations and has a huge impact on public health. It could be in many forms such as psychological, physical or deprivation of liberty and can occur in many settings ranging from sexual assault by strangers to intimate partner violence. Activities raising awareness against GBV in local settings going through workshops orienting medical students on how to deal with survivors of violence and moving on to structural systems working to promote gender equality in NMOs and finally national and regional women empowerment and advocacy efforts for gender equality and many more activities, form the backbone of the program. IMPACT! Health Systems (HS)

Health systems are open systems aimed to achieve and ensure health for all or Universal Health Coverage, which serves the 3rd sustainable development goal. According to WHO health systems defined as (all activities whose primary purpose is to promote, restore, and maintain health). To achieve Universal Health Coverage, health systems should work in a higher quality on WHO Health Systems Framework as 6 essential building blocks (Service delivery, Health workforce, Information, Medical products and technologies, Financing, and Leadership/ Governance). Many health systems often do not meet the service requirements of their populations, failure can be caused by various factors. On the other hand, medical students lack knowledge and awareness about topics preventing them from acting in their societies, as future leaders and deliverers of health care in their communities and nations. They should be aware of local, national,l and international implications that affect health systems, understand them, and take part in the solution linked to the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal, achieving health for all.

Healthy Lifestyles & NonCommunicable Diseases (HLNCD)

Non-Communicable Diseases are: cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic pulmonary diseases; and Healthy Lifestyles include: smoking cessation, reduced alcohol consumption, healthy diet, and exercise. This Program combines the use of activities and advocacy to fight NCDs. It is mostly focused on the promotion of healthy lifestyles as well as prevention of chronic diseases, which makes medical students who are involved in the activities more competent in their further work as healthcare workers

HIV&AIDS & Other STIs (HAS)

More than 1 million Sexually Transmitted Infections are acquired every day. In order to participate in a response, IFMSA members organize activities to reduce substantially the number of new transmissions as well as improve health assistance, treatment, and general wellbeing of those living with HIV or with any other STI. All these efforts are capitalized within the IFMSA HIV & AIDS and other STIs programs.The aim of this program is to provide a platform to educate, decrease the stigma and raise awareness within the general public, people at risk, or those who are already affected by HIV & AIDs and other STIs.

Maternal Health & Access to Safe Abortion (MHASA)

Maternal Health refers to the direct impact of pregnancies on women’s health both during pregnancy, during childbirth, and in the postpartum period, comprising a lot of areas. Moreover, most maternal deaths are preventable, but inequality in the provision of adequate maternal healthcare among different regions results in hundreds of thousands of women’s deaths each year. Therefore, activities related to this program are established by IFMSA members, to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, and to ensure equitable access to maternal health services worldwide despite the socioeconomic background of the woman. This program also works on the activities promoting access to safe abortion and reduction of adolescent (teenage) pregnancies.

Medical Education Systems (MES)

MES Program aims to increase student activism and advocacy in their faculties, ultimately to get them to obtain voting rights and a say in their faculty decisions. To achieve this, activities are organized by students for students to learn about different areas of medical education so they can know different types of teaching, learning, evaluation, and assessment, the students role in medical education, and the importance of feedback in this regard. Ultimately, to implement “good practises” to Medical Education and to achieve quality education for medical students.

IMPACT! Mental Health

Mental health has been hidden behind a curtain of stigma and discrimination for too long. It is time to bring it out into the open. For all individuals, mental, physical, and social health are vital and interwoven strands of life. As our underThe standing of this relationship grows, it becomes ever more apparent that mental health is crucial to the overall well-being of individuals, societies, and countries. This program caters to spreading awareness, advocating, and speaking about mental health.

Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

The Realizing SRHR program is one of the most recently established programs in IFMSA. Including topics from Comprehensive Sexuality Education, to the LGBTQIA+ people and Non-Violent Gender Stereotypes, this program searches for activities that answer to populations’ needs most often neglected rather than not in education. Dealing also with topics such as Sex Workers’ issues, Sex Positivity, and Sexual Pleasure, we try to break the stigma and discrimination and make medical students, young people and stakeholders globally realize that Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights need to be respected and promoted by all.

Teaching Medical Skills

Although medical education should provide each aspiring physician with appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes for independent work right after graduation, in reality, there is often a gap. Often students do not have enough opportunities for clinical practice or are taught using outdated methods, while some other skills that are necessary for everyday work are assumed to be learned spontaneously. Therefore, the aim of the IFMSA Program on Teaching Medical Skills is to work on following: analyzing of the current situation in medical schools, assess the quality and needs of medical students; providing learning opportunities through educational activities, such as competency-based training and workshops with academic quality ensured, and to advocate with the faculties to provide support, non-formal education recognition, and work towards the integration of well-structured competency-based programs in curricula. Contributing to the creation of competent and confident doctors we directly assure that the best possible care is provided to the ones who mostly depend on us and our competences with our patients.
