The move from Training Support Division to Capacity Building: What is all the fuss about?

In the recent months, since I have become the Capacity Building Regional Assistant, many people have asked me; ‘’what is capacity building? How is it different from the training support division?’’ It is a perfectly valid question. I have certainly asked myself (and others) the same. Sometimes I still do! However, working in the division, I got a bit more insight and clarity as to what is what. In truth, it is quite simple. Let us begin with the mission of CB in the IFMSA. We have to realise that capacity building is a process that is going on in every sustainable organisation. It simply means that there is some sort of passing of knowledge going on within the organisation, be it from peer to peer, from more experienced members to newbies, through soft skill training, externals etc. In short, any kind of activity that empowers the members or equips them with new skills, knowledge, experience. It is one of the major components of IFMSA activities, next to external representation and networking. It is going on in the work of Standing Committees, soft skills training, various workshops (pre-GAs, pre-RMs, SRTs) etc. As you might imagine: IT IS HUGE. This is the first distinction it has from TSD. The TSD mostly concentrated on soft skill training, which is only one way of building capacity.

The CB takes a step further to widen its approach.

not have a strategic plan, the first step will be to make one. Furthermore, it is important This way we will ensure that to notice how capacity building whatever intervention we will is being conducted. Because it execute will be more specific, has a bigger picture, its mission relevant and will consequently is to ensure that the process have a stronger effect on our itself is well coordinated and progress. purpose-driven (I cannot To sum up (or for all you lazy stress the importance of this people out there; TL;DR): I see enough). Here we see the two main differences between second distinction. TSD usually the Training support division conducted training sessions and the Capacity building. First and workshops according to one is the sheer scope of the the interest of students, but not structure (moving from one always their needs or the needs support division into every of their organisation. Example: Standing Committee, workshop, Most of the training session * a n y - o t h e r - e v e n t - t h a t topics at international meetings increases-levels-of-knowledgewere known in advance or-skills) and the wider variety and repeated themselves of approaches. The second throughout the years. This is difference is that it will always good because it offers some strive to work in line with some basic soft skills to the new sort of the bigger picture (a members and this was the need strategic plan), to make sure it that was always assumed: we answers to the need, be it the need future doctors to be better need of the Federation, Region, people. However, over the years, NMO, LC or the individual. members could get this kind Andrej Marin Vujkovac of training at home as well, Capacity Building Regional making the need smaller and smaller and we have not really Assistant for Europe asked ourselves if the training provided will help us reach our goals (either organisational of personal). Therefore, the shift we want to make with the new structure is that we will look into the strategic plan (of the Federation, the region and the NMO), identify where we lack skills and then specifically target them. If the organisation does

Development of the European Region

At the beginning of our term we felt the need to built upon the work of the previous European Team. They put a lot of focus upon improving our External Representation work as well as our Internal Operating Guidelines and Regulations. As you start your term you always have a lot of ideas and suggestions that you want to put into action, but it is all meaningless if it does not meet the needs of the region you are representing. To make sure our ideas were in line with the needs of Europe we created a survey that was filled out by almost every European National Member Organizations (NMO), which led to a plan of action. One of the things we focused on were the different capacities of our NMOs and how we can help to coordinate NMO collaboration to improve each other’s work. Therefore we focused on different areas that we considered important to the work of a NMO, consulting

them on the areas they would like to improve and where they see their strengths. The idea was that at the end of our term we created something that you can use to improve in the areas you wish. The evaluation took us longer than expected but we feel we came up with something useful. Step 1: We are in the process of creating a follow-up template for the different areas and to ask specific questions to gain further information of „good practice“ and encountered problems. We would like to invite anybody who is interested to contribute to this process.

share these documents in an European Database that we are currently developing. Additionally, if everything turns out as planned, we will use the expertise the Focus Groups and the Euroteam gained to offer small Capacity Sessions at the European Regional Meeting. All in all, we are looking forward to the upcoming months to see how everything develops. This is quite a new area for us as well. We hope that our ideas can complement the new IFMSA structure, involve the NMOs as much as possible and improve the collaboration between NMOs. If you have any feedback, comments, ideas or are interested in contributing, please feel free to contact us.

Step 2: The second step will further involve interested NMOs to help us evaluate the results of the templates as a Focus Group. Daniel Mensinga The goal will be to collect the Development Assistant for results and try to find solutions Europe to the different problems posed. At the end of the whole process, we would like to

EuRegMe Update - Once upon a time, there was a little Greek ship

Our journey starts back in September 2014. This is when everything started, when the decision to try was taken. This is when HelMSIC set up an organizing committee of 23 people and trusted us to give shape to an unfulfilled dream and make it a realistic goal. The EuRegMe 2016 should finally come to Greece! Working for such a long time, for something so specific definitely needs dedication, strong motivation and demands time, energy and teamwork. Lots of online meetings, emails, phone calls, documents, booklets, reports. Lots of disappointments, fights, misunderstandings and at the same time lots of achievements, laughs and -mainly virtualgroup hugs. Keeping our spirit and motivation high was and still is one of the main difficulties we have to face. When your goal is so longterm, that you will see it taking shape 2 years later, you have to get satisfaction and be proud of your small achievements, taking place along the way. When you finally find the host city or the accommodation, when you decide what the topic of the theme event will be, when a sponsor finally says “yes” or when you just find the perfect body paints for the neon party! But mainly, the most valuable inspiration that you can get comes from your own team,

from some kind words, from a motivational post on your facebook group, from a silly photo that someone sent or a face to face meeting that you had.

tirelessly as the big day is getting closer. Do you still wonder why you should join us? EuRegMe ‘16 is going to take place in Thessaloniki, a city with great history and vibrant nightlife. As the second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki has the atmosphere of a lively European city and can provide you with the ultimate experience of Greek hospitality and spirit. Anywhere in Thessaloniki, you can taste traditional delicacies and dishes of the Greek cuisine. Even more, Hotel Capsis that will cover all our accommodation and venue needs and has been a great supporter in our effort, will also meet all our nutritional demands, including a great variety of vegeterian choices that Greek cuisine has to offer. Moreover, you will have the chance to experience a totally original structure of our Theme Event on Preventive Medicine, which will include interactive workshops and parallel healthrelated activities during the breaks, apart from the essential lectures and keynote speeches. Last but not least, a big team of volunteers informed about all the procedures and trained on organization and communication skills will be there to answer all your questions and support the actualization of the meeting.

The first time we realised that this was turning real was in Denmark, when we got elected. All of a sudden, this was becoming true, our effort for the candidature bore fruit, the EuRegMe ‘16 was ours! Our feelings were mixed; enthusiasm and satisfaction that we finally made it and at the same time anxiety and worry about what we had to do next. It took us a lot of time to get over the first shock and realize that it really happened. The work had to get doubled, the agreements should be made, the contracts should be signed. The sense of responsibility was now even bigger. The European region of IFMSA had trusted us to be the host of its most important meeting, where medical students from all over Europe would gather to share experiences and ideas on their way of becoming better future healthcare leaders and professionals and that’s why we had to be even more focused and hardworking since then. Reaching today, only 4 months before the EuRegMe, our passion and devotion have reached their highest levels and our team bonds are stronger Still have second thoughts? than ever making us working Then wait to hear about pre and

post-EuRegMe! Pre-EuRegMe will be held in Kastoria, one of the most picturesque cities of Greece, located 2.30 hours from Thessaloniki. Built around a lake, the landscapes in this small city of Greece will give you the perfect inspiration to wake up for your trainings every day. As for the post-EuRegMe, there is not a lot to say about Chalkidiki, you just have to see a picture to realize that it’s actually a heaven on earth. Βreathtaking landscapes, beautiful crystal clear waters, sandy cosmopolitan or secluded beaches and vivid nightlife!

What more to ask to wash out your post-EuRegMe blues? Oh yes, a full program made up by our organizing committee and volunteers, a shuttle bus which will take us anywhere we want and a group of volunteers to accompany and have fun with you!

Feeling SECSE in Serbia, 2015

In the modern times that we are all living in, numerous challenges and risk factors have raised the question of a need for an adequate way of preventing people from indulging in risky behaviors and preserving not only their physical health, but also mental well-being, and encouraging them to freely express and be accepting of other people’s gender identity and sexual orientation. At IFMSA-Serbia we firmly believe that in order to provide and deliver effective education, you have to start early, which is why we often approach not only students and high schoolers, but we even work with elementary school pupils!

are different as well. Thus, a special platform was recently born in order to share our knowledge, to reach other peer educators, raise new questions and get your motivation even higher than before: The Southern European Cooperation on Sexual Education (SECSE).

After the amazing Malta and Catalonia, this year IFMSA-Serbia had the privilege to be the host of the 3rd SECSE! It has gathered more than 60 participants from numerous European NMOs: Italy, Malta, Croatia, Spain, Catalonia, Turkey, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Serbia. In addition to that, this year’s However, the methods we SECSE boasts of having many use vary a lot. And we are sure observers from the NECSE that the methods that any of countries that helped with their you use back in your country invaluable input to the sessions

- from Sweden, Germany and Austria. The meeting took place in the wonderful Zlatibor mountain ranges of western Serbia, from October 21st through October 25th 2015. The purpose of this meeting

was to enable countries that share similarities by standard, views and problems, to exchange experiences and knowledges within the SCORA committee, share and develop new peer education methods, as well as improve their mutual cooperation. The focal point of the whole event was Method Exchange Sessions in which delegates from each NMO had individual sessions where they presented their methods and projects currently being used or developed in their home countries. The Theme Event was “Sexual and Reproductive Health of Youth”, with emphasis on reproductive health of adolescents, sexual education and habits of young, STDs, contraception, abuse of the “morning after pill”, adolescent pregnancies, adolescent abortions, and importance of sexual education in young. The participants had a

chance to take part in trainings and workshops held by leading health experts, professors and doctors in Serbia. And in the small breaks that we could snatch from the busy agenda, we even got to experience the beauty of the golden autumn in the Serbian mountains. After five days of dedicated work, it was unfortunately time to say goodbye. But with the

creative spirits of not only other SECSE delegates, but also our NECSE observers, we hope that everyone has already found a way or two for improving their methods! Igor Živković IFMSA-Serbia Secretary General 2014/2015

Human Rights Day 2015 in Greece

It is generally maintained that Human Rights are the Rights we all have, just by being humans. But how come we never protect them? Blatant violations of these rights occur every single minute while at the same time, freedoms which were supposed to be a given for everyone, are being violated. For this reason, HelMSIC took action.

of Medical Students with the Human Right of Health, the influx of refugees and their access to Public Health Care, the current situation in Greece, the violation of patients’ rights, the discrimination in the National Health Care System and the social dimension of the matter.

the world on December 10th, we organized a project consisting of two phases.

During the first phase, approximately 100 Medical Students all over Greece were trained on Human Rights issues, with emphasis on Health, and their violation in Greece. Much Human Rights Day Project too much emphasis was placed On the occasion of the World on the refugees` health condition Our objective has been the Human Rights Day, which is and the current refugee awareness and familiarization celebrated every year throughout crisis. The peer-education-

based workshop offered the participants the opportunity to introspect and retrospect, exchange views and interact effectively. Some experienced shocking emotions after what they heard; but isn’t that part of peer education’s magic?

experiential game with the aim of raising public awareness on the situation experienced by refugees who decide to begin the “journey” and how this affects their mental state. More specifically, it was held on December 9.

The second phase of the project included a variety of actions across all 7 Medical Schools, aimed to raise the awareness of the matter towards Medical Students. How was this carried out? Well, the participants of the first phase distributed informative material and informed students with a simultaneous photographic exhibition of MSF concerning refugees` health.

We built up a story of a refugee’s journey with some individual stations where participants would pass from. In these stations there were people depicting roles, giving continuity to the story and each station was different. For instance, at the first of the five stations participants were asked to determine their identity and assume the role of the refugee. The second station was a welcome island, here in Greece, where they were asked to convince the authorities they

needed asylum. The circle of the five stations was followed by a discussion among the participants about how they felt. In the end, they were asked about how hard the decision making process had been and if they eventually managed to feel a part of the story that could be real. What do Human Rights mean to you? How close or how far do you consider yourselves to be from this concept? You will need to stand up for them in places you never thought of, because Human Rights take flesh and blood in the most inconceivable places that no map can ever imprint. Vassiliki Samartzi

Santiago de Compostela is mostly known as the destination of St. James Way: one of the world’s most famous pilgrimages. Thus, hundreds of pilgrims arrive daily to the city. Our streets flood with a multicultural ambience. Inspired by such variety, our LC strives to provide creative projects to our students, such as the One sugus, one smile, an official project of IFMSA-Spain since 2014. An Exchange in Italy

More than 3 months has passed since I came back to the Motherland. Watching the photos from my exchange, I realized that I had left a small peace of my soul somewhere in Catania. This amazing traineeship in Italian medical system, great excursions and crazy parties made this exchange unforgettable.

Catania and after this August we became if not family than at least the brotherhood. We were placed to 5 different hospitals. Every morning we used to face medical adventures and then, during the lunch, while tasting Sicilian pizza with oranchino we were sharing the new knowledge. Of course, it is pointless to compare different of therapeutic, There were 96 representatives experience from 20 countries of the world. surgical and pediatric fields, We lived in a pretty good but all our impressions came student dormitory downtown to the common conclusion: despite having the language

barrier, Italian people are really easygoing and very friendly. Moreover, doctors, who have some trouble with speaking languages except native one, are more than happy to use their poor English to share the knowledge and to open professional secrets. So, learning process itself passed in enthusiastic and easy way. Host organization is the second thing that really impressed all of incoming students. Organization of the

social program was on a high level. It seemed that guys from SISM, IFMSA were going to hold Olympic Games. I can hardly remember calm evenings. The huge amount of excursions, historical trips to ancient cities, museums, cathedrals, volcano, visiting beaches, festivals, clubs were filling our free time. I have a feeling that I have seen so much on Sicily that even Francis Ford Coppola with his “Godfather” has not seen the same.

In the end of my emotional response I want to thank SISM and students of Medical University of Catania for their enormous work and for that unforgettable exchange! And of course, I am really grateful for Kazan State Medical University and Tatarstan Medical students’ Association because they made the exchange of my dream real.
