ARTIST OF THE MONTH ALTON G Cooper

Anomaly, Blessed, Learned, Esteemed, Alton G. Cooper, one who is more than ABLE to teach and serve in a variety of capacities! Alton Artwork is the by product of an amalgamation of experiences so tightly wrapped and woven where his body of work speaks for its self---a rich tapestry of mind-grinding, visual, conceptual, improvisational sites created with exuberant, vibrant acrylics that dance an angelic, spiritual pattern with each bush stroke across canvas or glass; hence, inviting each viewer to question the makings of the world and deeply rooted emotions of their own awareness via the visions and acute attention to detail from the eccentric mind of a stroke and aneurysm survivor, Mr. Cooper himself. Alton is a media/photographer, installation and public artist, independent curator, collaborator, and has partnered and composed a series of pieces for charitable organizations, philanthropic associations and commercial industry. My focus is always on refinement, giving back and being gracious while humilitant. I revere all of my work as undoubtedly sanguine, each always grounded in pleasure and aesthetics but more than not, the miracles of life, love, living and of a passionate faith from within. I ask, allow me to build upon your perception for, “It’s not far back to sanity...you can find the joy of innocence again, the canvas can do miracles,” sail with me on the waves of each brush STROKE. –Alton Cooper ACOOPER107@GMAIL.COM C: (832) 567-5916

Who Will Be Houston’s Next Mayor? A Few Questions with Ben Hall

A

ttorney Ben Hall is campaigning to be the next mayor of Houston. Recently, i10 had the opportunity to sit down for a talk with Ben to discuss his campaign, his leadership style and vision for the City. Here are a few of the things that came from that conversation.

advanced out of the mayor’s office. There has been a persistent theme of imposing more costs and taxes on city residents and the businesses that operate within our boundaries. I think these approaches are shortsighted and will only lead to economic strangulation. I intend to encourage job and economic growth through tax incentives and business-friendly policies. I want to grow the private sector so that jobs will be created, new businesses developed, small businesses given an opportunity to grow and expand, and to provide a wholesome environment for families and our children to live in peace and harmony. We will be the global economic giant our past has prepared us for!

i10: For the upwardly-mobile crowd, what will you do to make downtown Houston a more exciting place?

Ben: Houston ís downtown is beautiful! It houses a vast array of the greatest companies in the world. As mayor, I wish to supplement our world-class business complex with a world-class retail, commercial and entertainment complex downtown. I will encourage the development of a meaningful and progressive retail center (mall) downtown that rivals any other large city’s offerings. I also envision a worldclass entertainment district , with music, dancing, and familyfriendly venues enticing to both old and young. How to Pose

LIKE A MODEL by Ryan E. von Schwedler

A picture of a picket fence taken straight on will not look special. Taken at an angle, depth will be introduced into the photograph. We can apply this rule to portraiture. Learning how to pose like a model will prepare you for what photographers will instruct during a shoot. There are general rules of thumb for males and females separately, but photographer’s are always looking for diagonal lines in poses

Near Shoulder, Far Shoulder For males and females alike, standing straight on to the camera is flat and unattractive. Avoid getting caught on camera facing the photography flat on. Instead, position your feet on a slight angle and twist only your upper body a bit towards the camera. You should remember this near and far shoulder rule. Raise your shoulder closest to the camera and drop your rear shoulder. Whether or not your hands are in your pockets, on your hips, or folded, this rule also applies to your arms. The arm closest to the camera should be higher. Remember to maintain a near high shoulder and low rear shoulder

Seated Females Sitting fully on a stool or chair emphasizes your hips; your hips will look bigger the further seated you are. Avoid this. Instead, sit tall and on the edge of your seat. If you can, raise the stool slightly to avoid a parallel-to-the-floor hip to knee line. The line between your hips and knees should be a slight diagonal. When crossing your legs, avoid sticking a foot out towards the camera; cross your legs so the hanging foot is not out front, because it would be emphasized. If you have long hair, make the hair flow with the low shoulder. Turn your head towards the near high shoulder to create a more feminine posture. The line going down the middle of your face should not be in line with your breastbone. Avoid turning your head towards your low rear shoulder; males standing or sitting will be keeping their head to the low shoulder to avoid look graceful and feminine

Males Should Avoid Feminine Poses The goal is to avoid looking feminine. Opposite to females, males should be hit directly with light onto their chest, not across their garments, though this may not be in your control. Your head should not be straight upright. It should have a tilt, not a turn The arm closest to camera should be higher, perhaps grabbing a lapel or jacket. Since there are fewer poses for males, the photographer will have an easier time posing you. There are much more poses for females because they are ambidextrous; females can be posed in either masculine or feminine poses

Hand Modeling Tips Photographers want to see the sides of females hands, with some but not extreme separation between their thumb and index finger. For both males and females, never position either of your hands vertically or horizontally. The best position is usually on a 45 degree angle, tilted off the vertical axis. If you are posing with a significant other, you can move your hands in close to each others’ faces

Things to Remember Avoid horizontal and vertical lines. Never stand flat to the camera. Never allow the line through the middle of your face line up with your breastbone. Having a high near shoulder and a far low shoulder will naturally adjust the rest of your body to a more classical pose. These modeling tips will definitely impress photographers. The rest is up to them!

Getting Your Red Wine Right By Stephen G John

Not all red wines are the same. This may sound like stating the obvious, but reds are truly made differently. They use different grape varieties to begin with. However, those who are new to winedrinking won’t easily tell if the wine he’s sipping is a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Pinot Noir or a Shiraz. Those who consider themselves wine connoisseurs, on the other hand, can easily tell not only type of wine he’s drinking, but even its flavor profile the minute he swirls the beverage in his glass and starts sniffing it. We’ve heard it before: wine appreciation is much a science as it is an art. But for first-time red wine drinkers, it’s simply a matter of getting a beverage to complement their meal or having something to drink while listening to their favorite music or while hanging out with friends or loved ones. However, if you want to start learning how to pick good reds next time you shop, here a few factors you can consider:

Acidity The more acid there is in your wine, the sourer it will be. Don’t go for a bottle with low acid content if you don’t want your wine tasting weak. High acid content, on the other hand, means extra sourness. Going for one that balances the acidity would be then be your option when looking for the best-tasting bottle.

Tannin content

Tannin is a brownish or yellowish substance found in plants. The tannin content present in a red wine can be responsible for its rich bitterness. It also contributes to the flavor of the liquid as well as its structure.

Body

A wine’s body is simply its alcohol content, together with the sensation left in your mouth after taking a sip. If a wine is full-bodied, it leaves a strong aftertaste. If there’s little alcohol content in it, the taste quickly goes away.

Aroma

True wine appreciation, as any wine aficionado would tell you, starts with the smelling. Swirling the liquid in the glass is not simply a matter of pre-drinking instinct; the circular motion releases its flavors and enhances the entire drinking experience.

Flavor

Of course, this is the most important factor in all of it. After sipping the wine, let it stay in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it. There are even phases involved in tasting it. You don’t have to be an expert to know which wine is good to the taste. Your own palate will be the ultimate judge. Next time you grab a bottle of red wine, consider the factors mentioned here so you end up with something you’ll truly enjoy.

Looking for a Cure for Your Sweet Tooth?

S

o what will it be today; a tart or a flaky pastry, a frosty cake or a cheesecake, a crisp cookie or a soft polvoron, a pudding or a pie, a clafoutis or a mousse, an ice cream or a sorbet? Having the final flourish to a meal and ending it on a ‘sweet’ note has been one of man’s favourite habits. He has followed ‘finishing the meal with a dessert’ tradition religiously and time and again taken shelter in its indulgence whenever he has wanted to satiate his ‘sweet cravings’. The word itself has always been an obsession for him, somewhat like Achilles’ heels (or closer home, Ravana’s naval) for him and acquired a quintessential role in his life. It has lured him since time immemorial and made him go weak in his knees, and the recipes of desserts have been no less than precious billets-doux for him! Be it birthdays or anniversaries, weddings or festivals, parties or gatherings, desserts have always been a part of all his celebrations and made them complete for him. They have been ‘the comfort food’ and acted as depression cutters in times of emotional crisis. And the abundance of options has seldom managed to overwhelm him.

On the contrary, it has fuelled his appetite to greater extents. So he is forever trying to find a cure for his sweet tooth and untiringly experimenting and exploring with ingredients and cooking methods to come up with sinful delicacies. However full he says he is, strangely enough, there’s inevitably room for some dessert. Ever wondered why? The feeling of satiety comes due to the over stretching of the stomach, and the desire to eat and the kicks that the food gives us is controlled by the brain. When the stomach is loaded, chemical and neural signals are transported to the brain that tells it to refrain from eating more. But in the case of a dessert, the brain’s pleasure centre restrains those satiety signals and allows one to have the sweet treat. Buying desserts from the local store or preparing various types of dessert dishes at home has always been a common practice across the globe. This is now joined by the advent of internet shopping and people, who were previously quite sceptical about things like these, are now availing this medium to buy food online and dig into some mouth watering sweet concoctions without stepping out of the house and dropping a bead of sweat. The author explores man’s obsession with dessert dishes and also mentions the arrival of internet shopping to buy food online.

2013 Authors Networking Summit Equipping Local Authors & Entrepreneurs to Master The Business Side of Writing

T

he Master Communicator’s Writing Services is holding its fourth annual Authors Networking Summit on October 5, 2012. Over the last four years, this Summit and its supporting workshops and webinars have equipped over 300 aspiring writers to pursue their literary dreams. Equipping aspiring writers makes more sense than ever. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Competition for jobs with established newspapers and magazines will be particularly strong because the publishing industry is projected to become smaller. Writers and authors who have adapted to online media and are comfortable writing for and working with a variety of electronic and digital tools should have an advantage in finding work. The declining costs of self-publishing, the growing popularity of electronic books, and the increasing number of readers of electronic books will allow many freelancer writers to get their work published. Some job openings will arise as experienced workers retire, transfer to other occupations, or leave the labor force.” This means writers will need every advantage they can get in order to pursue their passion, and helping writers celebrate their passion is what we do best at 2013 Authors Networking Summit. The mastermind behind the Authors Networking Summit is Sharon C. Jenkins, known locally as The Master Communicator.

Jenkins states, “Authorpreneurship is designed to meet the needs of aspiring authors and entrepreneurs on the “fast track” and seasoned authors who want to excel in the “business side of writing.” This Summit consists of the following program: Keynotes and Workshops, America’s Favorite Author Awards Luncheon and a closeout networking event. Jenkins will also be launching her new and improved version of Authorpreneurship: The Business of Writing, which was picked up by Susan Mae Warren’s publishing company, My Book Therapy. The featured keynotes this year are Terry Whalen, Toni Harris, Tonya Hoffman, and Dayna Steele. Terry Whalen has written more than 60 nonfiction books plus been published in more than 50 magazines. For five years, he was an acquisitions editor at two book publishers and he’s a former literary agent. For four years, he was a publisher at Intermedia Publishing Group Now he is an acquisitions editor at Morgan James Publishing, a NY based traditional publisher. Whalen encourages writers of any level (from beginners to professionals) at Right-Writing.com. He will be looking for new authors at the summit, so bring your “pitch.” Toni Harris, the Taking a Drastic Step Queen, will be talking about Email Marketing. Tonya Hoffman, founder of The Public Speakers Association will be equipping authors to get their message out to the masses through speaking. Dayna Steele will be motivating authors to achieve Rock Star Success with Rock Star Principles. The workshops have included such topics as: Creating and Maximizing Your Internet Presence as

an Author; Speaking for Authors; Social Media Made Simple; Authorpreneurship: Mastering the Business Side of Writing; How to Become a BlogTalk Radio Super Star; How to Write A Book in 90 Days; Strategic Networking for Authors; to name a few. This year’s featured event is a contest to determine America’s Favorite Aspiring Author! This contest celebrates college and high school students who have a passion for writing. In this day and age of texting and minimalized correspondence, it’s important to emphasize the mastery of the written language for the present Millennial Generation. It is our aim to better position young writers for a writing career and competition in a more global writing community and to offer this career choice to a more diverse population. Our adult guests serve as role models and mentors and give their young counterparts a glimpse of the real world of writing while fine tuning their tools and acquiring new resources and expanding their network. We will also be conducting the 2013 America’s Favorite Authors, our Dancing with the Stars type contest for seasoned writers. Justina Page our 2012 America’s Favorite Author awardee will be transferring this coveted title to some fortunate author at our October 5th event. For more information about the contests, go to www.americasfavoriteauthor.com. It is with great pleasure that we announce Journey to Self-Love Empowerment as our non-profit partner for

this year’s Summit. We share a unique bond because of our like mission to empower youth to fulfill their greatest potential. This year’s youth focus will be on equipping young aspiring writers to not only master the craft of writing, but also that of living. In 2012, we hosted a dual conference for adults and young people with over 125 youth in attendance, which got our attention. We are duplicating this concept again this year. Journey to Self-Love Empowerment provides opportunities for unprecedented individual growth, education and empowerment of youth and adults who struggle with self-esteem issues. Specifically, their emphasis at the 2013 Authors Networking Summit will be helping senior high school and college students’ focus on developing a solid life plan with their writing career goals in mind. We are also sharing this year’s spotlight with two other local non-profits, the Learning for Life Program at the Sam Houston Area Boy Scouts of America and Katy Rocks, Inc. who will be providing the entertainment for the Summit. For a limited time the conference is free if you bring a friend. You can register at http://2013auth orsnetworkingsummit.eventbrite.com. GIFTS FROM THE HEART Erinnís Heart Early Learning Center by Tamika Starks

Erinn Hartwell and Chris Harrison

A

ristotle said, The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. Educating children is not a glamorous lifestyle. It takes a great deal of patience, a sharp mind and a very loving heart to plant the seed of knowledge in children. No one can attest to that more than Erinn Hartwell. She is well aware that she is cultivating fruit in the fertile ground of her family-owned business, Erinnís Heart Learning Center.

When asked why she continues to pursue such a demanding business she replies, The kids. I guess thatís why itís called Erinn’s Heart. The kids are my heart. Other people may sometimes get on my nerves, but every morning the children come in with a new attitude. Even if Iím having a bad day, they donít know Iím having a bad day. Theyíre like, Hi Ms. Hartwell. Can I have a hug? Whatever problems you have at home, they donít know and they make you feel so much better. A graduate of Jackson State University, Hartwell grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, and had dreams of becoming a dentist and moving to a big city. She did eventually move to Houston, but, she veered away from dentistry when she began having thoughts of opening a school. Her love of children paved the way and with great business savvy and the help of her big brother Chris Harrison, her vision came true. Erinn’s Heart is a wonderful example of what can be done with the support of family. As he had always been, Harrison was there when his little sister needed him. When faced with the daunting task of opening a school, she came to him with her dream, and it was Harrison’s financial backing and motivating spirit that made it all possible. Erinn always had a love for children growing up, so I knew her heart was it in, and I knew it would be something that would be beneficial for the community, Harrison says. His dedication to his sister and Erinnís Heart could not have been clearer than when he paused his successful career in bio pharmaceuticals and started teaching at the school during a rough patch. It was then when he decided to develop his own educational curriculum to give the students a fun, yet academically challenging experience. After much research, Harrison developed a core curriculum that has helped propel the students into Magnet and Vanguard programs for life after the center. We noticed that a lot of other schools were either strictly academic, all social, like a playhouse, or the kids were just sitting there,

rave reviews and accolades. Parents speak on how well prepared their students are when they leave the center and the quality environment. They also note how their children blossom, become full of confidence and are eager to learn, a combination any parent would be excited to experience.

Harrison says. We wanted children to be well-rounded, socially adaptive and to understand behavior control, but we also wanted them to be academically excellent. Our students are social and well-mannered, and theyíre still kids at heart, so I’m very pleased. Harrison ís time in the educational arena has inspired a book he just completed called My Child the Quick Fix, One Day at a Time, which Harrison expects to publish in 2013. Hartwell’s own dedication is plain to see at a time when most centers are owned by one person and run by another. Even though she is the mother of two young sons, she decided to be hands-on at school, which requires its own balancing act. I’m here at seven when we open and I’m here at seven when we close, Hartwell says. I have two to three positions. I have to be the director. I am the owner. And Iím a teacher. I’m constantly talking to the parents, letting them know whatís going on with their child. The job requires so much because I put so much into it.

H

artwell’s pride in her center shows by the standards that she sets. All the schoolís teachers are certified, and the facility has a great record with Child Care licensing. The center uses the number one curriculum in the country, High Reach, for its 18 month- to threeyear-olds, and the curriculum her brother created for four- and five-year-olds. When critics say teachers are pushing the kids too hard, she does not worry.

Although Hartwell looks to move forward with other aspirations, she has not left the vein of education with the magazine she is starting. Understanding that many early child care centers do not follow a curriculum, the mini-magazine will have a curriculum inside that will feature the fundamentals necessary to prepare young minds for elementary education. ìItíll have a color of the month, a shape of the month, handwriting, poems, a little story, and those types of things that parents can do at home with them, says Hartwell. The kids will have better focus and theyíll be ready to learn by the time they get to kindergarten if they follow the guide in the magazine. Hartwell is very aware of todayís shift in parental awareness. There needs to be more parent involvement with kids. Everything is so about social media and gadgets. Everybody wants to give their kids a DS and tell them to be quiet.î The magazine will address this issue by listing events going on in the Houston area that parents will be able to enjoy with their children. The magazine’s distribution is slated to start in August 2013, at child care centers all over Houston. Hartwell advises anyone who is interested in going into the child care business not to do so for the money. People always say they want to open a child care center and it looks so nice and easy. She knows of the bitter roots the long hours, the skeptics, the high turnover. She knows you have to be in it for the fruit. ìYou have to love kids. I could pocket all the money, but the school would be a mess. Iím proud of what Iíve done. It was hard work though. Harrison is quite the proud brother, and he says heís gotten a lot out of working with his sister.

ìIíve learned to dream again. Erinn has always been a dreamer, and sheís always gone head-first into anything sheís wanted to do. Iíve always admired her for that because I would never do something if I couldnít Hartwell says, ìThe kids love it! Theyíre like sponges. If see the end result, Harrison says. ìBut since going into you give it to them, theyíll accept it. business with her, it has allowed me to start dreaming and doing things Iíve always wanted to try. Erinnís Heart Learning Center is not only spoken well by its owners; the center has consistently received

Meet Mitzi H Henderson Namitzi Yoga namitzi yoga glamrusyogini glamrusyogini namitziyoga@gmail.com

er personal Yoga journey started over 7 years ago as she was going through a very traumatic time in her life. She experienced a great loss, one which we as human beings would rather never experience but is inevitable. With passing of her best friend and confidant her mother she had no idea how she would be able to breathe, much less return back to her demanding career in Nuclear Pharmacy. After exhausting loads of money shopping and vacationing the void was still there. She tried her prayer closet but it seemed that she just could not get connected. One day she found herself in a yoga class, 107.5 degrees, 90 minutes. She describes her first yoga experience as a moment where her pain was less, her thoughts dissolved and her emotions settled with every ounce of sweat that dripped from her body as time stood still. After the first class she found herself back the next day. Days turned into weeks and then weeks turned into months, she realized the difference that her yoga practice made in healing her from the inside out, transforming her body, mind and soul. She could not keep this gift to herself , she tried to invite her family, friends, colleagues, to class and they were not interested and realized that bottling it, bagging it or putting it in a can was not an option, What is a woman to do! She had to figure out how to share this with those arournd her and beyond. She took a vacation and attended her first 200 hour teacher training at The infamous Yoga Institute in Houston, Texas with Lex Gillan, after which Namitzi Yoga was born. She decided that she would be the bridge between Yoga and the masses by taking yoga to the people. Mitzi started from very humble beginnings offering classes for free or nearly free in churches, local parks, schools, leasing of-

fices. Her passion to share yoga and its benefits were so infectious that her hard work began to pay off exponentially. She is one of the most respected and sought after Yoga Teachers in Houston and was named as one of the 120 Yogis that Origin Magazine loves in their February issue. She appeared on Hboís Real Sports as the chronicled her guiding her client through meditation and asana practice. It is no secret that she shares her love for yoga with everyone that she meets, as students have been known to arrive 45 minutes early just to get a spot in her class. Her mantra ì If they willl not come to yoga, I will take it to themî serves as her driving force as her business continues to flourish. She has proven that Yoga is one size fits all as her client list ranges from baby boomers, to stay at home moms, Oil and Gas Companies, Professional Athletes, Houstonís Premier Hotels and many other local organizations. She has created partnerships with several Workshops and Rehabilitation facilities to provide Yoga classes for adults and children with Developmental Disorders, Behavioral Disorders, ADD, Autism, and ADHD and devotes many hours per week to their consumers. She teaches Yoga to local Girl Scouts and Brownies to help them earn their yoga badge several times a month and also frequents several after school programs, day camps, and day schools during her busy week. She is establishing a Non Profit Organization ì MTZFITSî to provide yoga and wellness classes for afterschool programs in low income areas .

Why Namitzií Yoga ? . Mitzi has over 400 hours of training in Hatha and Ashtanga lineage, over 7 years of practice and serves as a mentor to other Yoga Teachers.

As a team, we truly focus on the Mind, Body and Spiritual connection and growth. Our sessions consist of meditation practice, pranayama and asana practice. All instructors are atleast 200 hr

Yoga Alliance Certified and are as passionate about yoga as Mitzi is. We pride ourselves on being able to bring the studio experience to individuals whereever they need it home, office, church, hospitals, hotels and schools. In addition to private and group classes we offer retreats, special events, and 2 hour Workshops including but not limited to Yoga for weightloss, Yoga for Emotional Wellbeing, Pre Natal Yoga, Yoga for Children, Yoga for Back Pain and the list goes on. Our goal as a team is to provide a liberating environment where each individual is comfortable with being where they are, but become passionate about where they have the ability to go. We guide and encourage our students to take the principles of their practice off of their mat and into their everyday lives. See you ON the mat soon! - namitzi

STEVE BROWN INTERVIEW

INTER VIEW STEVE BROWN Itís been over 8 years since we featured Steve Brown in the i10Media Magazine article ìWho is Steve Brown?î Since then, Steveís journey has meandered through a growing family, successful career in public administration and, yes, politics. Here, we catch up with Steve, and get a sense for what the future holds for Fort Bend County. Reg: How have you been, old friend? It’s been a while since we chatted. Steve: It has, Reg. I think we both have a little less hair these days.

Reg: That ís very impressive! Not many people can say that they worked in The White House. Steve: It was a phenomenal experience. It totally opened my eyes to how government works. I was hooked from that point on. Reg: So, what happened after The White House? Steve: Well, I decided to move back. You know, all politics is local. I worked briefly for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and then with State Rep. Sylvester Turner in Austin. While with Sylvester, we helped to craft the state budget. I later moved back to Houston to work for State Sen. Rodney Ellis, and ultimately on Mayor Brownís campaign. Reg: Ah, Mayor Brown. I like how that sounds, but weíll get to that in a moment. You also worked in Austin on healthcare issues, right? Steve: Yes. In 2003, we were approaching epidemic levels for communicable diseases like pertussis (whooping cough). In fact, I think Texas ranked 47th in the country for immunization rates. That session, I crafted and advocated for a package of bills to ultimately improve access to vaccinations in Texas.
