T-R-A-P-P-E-D, EP.6

Written By Haya Barakat

Melanie didn’t recognize the chilling metal feeling coursing through her veins. It was like water that tasted too much like lead. It was a terrible feeling, like ice being dumped onto her. It was like rain falling up. The moment she heard those words come out of Roya’s mouth, she knew that everything was going to change, and not in the good way. She sat there, staring at Roya for what seemed like an eternity, before jumping up faster than she could blink and bolting for the ladder to the treehouse. She ignored Roya’s cries to her, demanding her to come back, and instead ran to her house as fast as she could. Her vision was blurry with blue and green-red-orange. Confused. She was confused. Why was Roya blue-black again? Was it because of her? Melanie shook the blue-gray thoughts out of her head until she finally made it back home. She positioned and quickly climbed the steel ladder up to her bedroom window and ripped it open before bursting in and shutting it closed again. She stood there, next to her window, for ages before falling backwards onto her bed. She didn’t bother getting into pajamas or changing from her dirty clothes. She just laid there, in utter shock and confusion, until she finally slept and dreamt of the treehouse, the entire thing painted blue and black, or in other words, Melanie’s worst nightmare. --“What happened, exactly?” Dr. Codey asked Melanie. She sat on the chair in Dr. Codey’s office, star-

ing at her lap before the words finally escaped her mouth, tasting like too much sugar and metal. “Roya said she...she said that she was feeling something, something that neither of us want to feel. Something we’ve been trying to avoid for forever,” Melanie explained slowly, her words dripping out of her mouth like melted candlewax. “And, if I may ask, what is this feeling?” Dr. Codey questioned, his pen and regular green notebook ready in his hands. Melanie stayed silent. She knew that Dr. Codey wouldn’t know what she was talking about, only Roya does. And now she probably won’t talk to her again. “Well, if you want to look at it in a normal perspective, I guess you could say that it’s like feeling lost and isolated and abandoned. It’s like everything you love suddenly going missing, and it’s like the whole world is gray and colorless and blank, and like everything you loved to do is no longer fun, or everything you loved to see or hear or taste is no longer appealing. It’s like feeling numb or completely lost in every aspect you could think of, and only a few certain things can bring emotions and color and love back into your life. And eventually, those things turn gray and bleak, too.” Melanie felt hot tears forming in the back of her eyes, but she quickly blinked them away. She glanced up at Dr. Codey and, to her relief, saw that he was too busy scribbling her words into his notebook to notice. “That...is definitely not something you’d want to feel. Do you and Roya have a certain name for it? Something that you usually call it instead of explaining it all the time?” Melanie definitely did not want to answer this, but she knew that she had to. She was the one to bring up the subject of her and Roya getting into a small fight, anyways. Melanie took a deep breath before nodding her head, looking up to finally meet Dr. Codey’s warm brown eyes. “Blue-black.” Dr. Codey looked green-red-orange, but greenred at the same time. Confused and interested. He quickly wrote the two words into his notebook and looked back up at Melanie with a pink and whitered look in his eyes. “When did you two establish this ‘blue-black’ thing, and why? Do you have anything else you like to explain with colors?” “Yes, there are a lot of things.” Melanie never felt

pleased look on his face), Dr. Codey’s surprise. “Could you give me an example?” Dr. Codey asked politely and Melanie nodded her head. “Like, I could say that the way paint feels is pink-white and yellow, or the way vanilla tastes is white,” Melanie said, the words seeming to come more from her mind than her mouth. “It...kind of sounds like you have a case of synesthesia, Melanie,” Dr. Codey spoke after a couple moments of silence. Melanie thought about that for a second. She vaguely remembered reading about something like that in a book she read.

“And what is that, again?” Melanie asked. “Synesthesia is a condition where one sense, like smell, is perceived with another or more, like sight or sound. Like you said, people with synesthesia, called synesthetes, could tell me what color

as bold as she did now, but she felt like spilling everything to Dr. Codey. He did seem a lot more pink and white and trustworthy, after all. “We have a color, or a mix of colors, for almost every emotion. It’s kind of our way of communicating with each other, the only way we really understand each other.” Dr. Codey nodded his head while writing more. “And...what else do you use besides colors?” “Well, we usually just describe things with senses that they aren’t usually described in,” Melanie answered, for once not bothering to hold in the truth, to her own, and (obvious by the shocked but

Horoscope

Leo

JULY 21 - AUG 20

You will grab attention in any way you possibly can. Selfimmolation is not out of the question. You like to kiss mirrors a lot. Genghis Khan was a Leo, and so is Barney the Dinosaur. People still love Lucy, but less because she was a Leo. Leos will interrupt conversation to talk, and they will place themselves bodily in the way of someone who is trying to leave before the Leo is finished saying what he or she needs to say. All Leos want parades on their birthdays. Leos never marry because no one is good enough for them. If they do marry, they keep their spouses locked under the bathroom sink. They need physical affection at all times; unfortunately, they can’t find any because everyone thinks they are irritating punks. This is why so many of the people arrested for necrophilia are Leos. A Leo uses himself as an example of the Overman in order to describe philosophical concepts. Some Leos decide to be homosexual even if they aren’t, because they think this gives them shock value. It actually means that neither gender will want to hook up with them. In actuality, anything besides a romantic evening with themselves is considered a step down for the Leo. Leos open doors

by screaming at them. They expect their Clappers to applaud when they enter a room. Leos are said to resemble lions. This means that they are loud, have cleft upper lips and slimy noses, and s**t under trees as they walk. They snack on monkeys while watching “Entertainment Tonight”. Humility frightens Leos. That is why Jesus was a Capricorn, Buddha was an Aries, and so forth. However, “radical cult leader” is not out of the question. Leos like to start fights with Aries. They will stomp and bloody each other regardless of whether or not they are in public. In fact, the Leos usually prefer it. You will see these fights taking place at bars, sporting events, fashion shows, or Taco Bell. If you are a clever Capricorn, you will sell tickets. Don’t worry about hanging posters--Leo will take care of that in advance. Aquarians hang posters of rock stars on their walls. Scorpios hang posters of famous disasters on their walls. Capricorns hang posters of great mathematicians on their walls. Pisceans hang posters of unicorns on their walls. Leos hang posters of themselves on their walls.

You & Your Hairdresser One of the most important people you should be friend with and have good term with is your hairdresser. Your hairstylist is dying to tell you something while you’re in the chair and wishes you knew. Have you ever wondered what your hairdresser is really thinking while styling your hair?! Starting from this issue, we will begin revealing one secret every issue. Stay tuned for shocking information. If you’re going to your hairstylist to mimic a celebrity style, your hairstylist would love to tell you (but he/she can’t) that she can do same haircut or hair color, but not the same look because she is not in the level of the team of professionals that the celebrities have been fixing their hair before every appearance. As an advice, when you show a celebrity picture to

your hairstylist and you want to look like her, be aware of your own hair texture and bone structure which may not be the right combination for the style you want.

Choosing the Marriage Partner Generally, American and Arab marriages are very much the same between the two cultures. However, some differences are noticeable. American culture is driven by social acceptance norms; while Arab culture is driven by religion. At some point, Arab cultural variation from region to region plays significant role in establishing the restrictions. Both cultures forbidden marriage from immediate family members except first cousin marriages which is accepted by Arab culture. In matter of fact, Arab culture are encouraging first cousin’s marriage even though from religious prospective, marriage from cousin is discouraged. In recent years American delay marriage until life security is being established like education, career, and financial needs. In the Arab culture people get married at a young age. Most likely, men get married before reaching age 20 and women are considered ready for marriage soon after they reach menstruation. Previously, most Arab marriages used to be ar-

ranged marriages. Usually, parents will choose the wife for their son then proceed with the arrangement which usually short. In more liberal communities, parents may recommend some choices and allow the children to choose. In most tribal communities, the two may have not seen each other at all or the marriage could have been arranged during childhood. However, this type of practice has somewhat been changed in modern Arab culture due the Western world influence. This is different from American society were American couples do not need to have family approval and can live together long enough before they decide getting married. Advertisement
