LOOKING SIDEWAYS – AN ONGOING PROJECT EXPLORING THE FRINGES OF SNOW, SURF AND SKATE – POPPED UP AT THE LOOP BAR IN TIGNES, FRANCE, MARCH 14 – 18, 2011, DURING THE WINTER X GAMES EUROPE. THE INDEPENDENT FESTIVAL HOSTED A VARIETY OF EVENTS ROOTED IN ART, MUSIC AND PHOTOGRAPHY TO CELEBRATE THE CREATIVITY IN SNOWBOARDING CULTURE. THIS INCLUDED AN ART SHOW FROM SCHOPH SCHOPHIELD, A SNOW PHOTOGRAPHY RETROSPECTIVE FROM JAMES MCPHAIL AND MUSIC FROM BEN HOWARD, DUKE, JETTBLACK AND TRUCKFIGHTERS. IN ORDER TO CAPTURE THE FUN AND GAMES FOR POSTERITY, WE SET UP A MOBILE STUDIO IN THE DRAGON LODGE IN TIGNES LE LAC AND MADE THIS MAGAZINE AS THE EVENT UNFOLDED. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS DIP INTO THE WORLD OF LOOKING SIDEWAYS.

“I’m going to have to tell you this story now because I’ve mentioned it,” digresses Flynn Stronach, the guitarist from the beatboxingbased trio Duke. “A friend got very drunk in Scandinavia, no Leeds… no, it was in Salford! Is Salford in Leeds? Anyway, he was up north and a posh BMW pulled up with an attractive lady in it who said, ‘Do you want to come with me?’ Then he woke up with lots of pains in his stomach and they’d removed his kidney!”
This snippet of conversation pretty much sums up these three lads from the town of Cheltenham in south west England: far too deep in banter and random stories to really give a shit about making a good impression. “You aren’t going to get much ‘content’,” forewarns Flynn, who is slumped on a sofa in their chalet apartment in Tignes alongside lead beatboxer Edd Travers and drummer-turnedvocalist Marko Pandazis a few hours before their headline show at the Loop Bar. “It pisses me off that deejays make so much money playing other people’s songs on decks,” explains Flynn, once the interview finally gets underway. “We do it live. […] We don’t do our own material, we do other people’s songs, but in a very unique style. We play acoustic guitar and only use very small effects on the pedal. We don’t use looping or backing tracks or anything like that. It’s about making dance music real.”

It certainly sounds real when the boys take to the stage later that evening. Although their mashups of hip hop, dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass and house may not be to everyone’s taste, there’s no denying their talent as they lay down heavy beats with a mic, acrobatic mouths and vocal chords. “Me and Marko started gigging together and Edd used to come to one of my open mic nights. He’d play guitar really badly and sing ‘Save Tonight’ [by Eagle Eye Cherry], get drunk and threaten people,” remembers Flynn fondly of the band’s formation five years ago. “We were gigging one night and he went, ‘Hey I can do some of that beatbox stuff!’ Normally beatbox or hip hop culture is all like, ‘Hey, do you want a battle? I’ll cut you blud.’ But [Marko and Ed] weren’t like that and hit it off straight away.” Hailing the likes of fellow beatboxers Beardy Man and Shlomo – in spite of a number of jokes at the latter’s expense – as contemporary influences, the trio exude a passion for music that cuts through some of their clowning, for a minute at least. It’s this side of Duke that you can see seeping into every second of their set. “We’re very lucky, because we get to go lots of places and get paid for doing what we love,” explains Flynn, dipping briefly into heartfelt sincerity. “We’re truly blessed!”

It’s always tricky to explain to someone who speaks a different language what you are doing and why you want to take their photograph. But when it’s minus ten and you’re surrounded by 20,000 inebriated people dancing to 2 Many DJ’s, it can test your patience. You have no real control in these situations. It was just a case of taking a deep breath and keeping the faith.
