City devises plan to address recent spill BY ELIOT DUKE Staff Writer

The City of Thomasville released a fourpronged approach Friday to deal with the recent sewer overflow of nearly 16 million gallons of untreated wastewater into Hamby Creek that sparked an investigation from the Environmental Protection Agency and resulted in a fine of more than $35,000.

Details of the plan include the city hiring consulting engineers, an environmental consulting firm and a law firm, as well as introducing interim procedures that open up lines of communication for city employees in the event of another spill. “We’re having everything indefensibly looked at — the actions of our employees and how they reacted to the spill, what

We put the four pieces of the puzzle together to move forward with this.” In order to analyze the city’s sewer collection system and prioritize the immediate short and long-term rehabilitation needs, Thomasville hired Pease and Associates

Lexington kicks off ‘Barbecue Month’ BY LISA WALL Editor

WELCOME — Nothing says fall in North Carolina like cooling temperatures, early sunsets, the turning of the leaves and barbecue. Lexington officially kicked off “Barbecue Month” Tuesday at the Barbecue Festival Media Luncheon held at Richard Childress Racing Auditorium in Welcome. The event begins a month-long celebration in Davidson County, culminating with the 26th annual Barbecue Festival on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in uptown Lexington. With the list of big-name bands performing on six entertainment stages, Festival Director Stephanie Saintsing said she expects this year to be bigger and better than ever. “With the 26th annual event, mainly we’re just focused on building on what has worked for us in the past,” said Saintsing. “It takes several ingredients to have a successful event and, obviously, barbecue is the star, but we have six stages for entertainment and many other special attractions. It’s really just a family-friendly atmosphere that lends itself to a wonderful day. We’re really just celebrating Lexington and what our community is all about.” Gracing the WTQR stage this year will be country music sing-

In October, 1871, a tremendous fire devastated the city of Chicago, killing more than 250 people and leaving more than 100,000 homeless after the blaze destroyed 17,000 homes during the two-day inferno. The impact of the tragedy affected the entire country, causing sweeping reform in fire safety codes and increasing public awareness as to how prevent another such disaster.

died and another 16,705 suffered injuries from fires last year, which also caused an estimated $15.5 billion in property loss. Statistics show prevention can make a difference as 63 percent of house fire deaths occurred in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Only one in four Americans has a home escape plan and has practiced it, despite the fact house fires account for 84 percent of all fire-related deaths.

GREENSBORO – When it comes to the issue of sending more American troops to Afghanistan, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble has mixed feelings on the subject. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do on that, but I have strong feelings about it,” Coble said of the war in Afghanistan. “I’m not wild about spending millions of dollars to send thousands of more troops over there where they would be in danger of getting killed or maimed for the rest of their lives.” The Republican, who has represented North Carolina’s Sixth District since 1985, met with a Thomasville Times correspondent while attending a pancake supper at the Greensboro Masonic Temple. He was an early supporter of both the war in Afghanistan, as well as the one in Iraq, before becoming a strong critic of the handling of the war in Iraq. “If I had known that we had such a poorly formulated exit strategy in Iraq, I would have never voted to dispatch troops over there,” Coble said. “We had a terrible post exit strategy, and I’m not sure the one in Afghanistan is much better.” Coble, who spent 5 and a half years in the U.S. Coast Guard and 22 years in the Coast Guard Reserves, is a member of the House Committee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. “We have a bad record of taking control in Afghanistan,” Coble said. “There are all sorts of failures; all sorts of notches on

The law firm of Brooks Pierce will conduct an investigation of the handling of the spill. “These associates have worked for us on multiple projects having to do with our sewer system,” said Craver. “I worked with one of the engineers from Brown and Caldwell. their belt.” Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan is expected to ask for as many as 40,000 troops, a request that is not endorsed by some U.S. generals. Others are recommending withdrawal time lines for the United States troops in that country. “This is a situation where it’s darned if you do and darned if you don’t,” Coble said. “If you cut and run in Afghanistan, it will open the door for the Taliban.” While President Barack Obama is the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed forces, Coble said some of the decisions on strategy in the War on Terror could come to a vote in Congress. “It does appear that in Iraq, it’s better now, but I’m told that corruption just runs rampant in Afghanistan, and I don’t doubt that” Coble said. “I understand that it’s among high officials as well as regular Joes.” Coble did some travel abroad in the line of duty earlier this year. From June 27 through July

Perhaps the most important part of the plan is improving the lines of communication. New spill procedures will make all city employees part of the detection effort. Any employee who knows or may suspect a spill is occurring is instructed to communicate the information to supervisors and managers in the chain of command, including the city manager. “We want to find exactly what did happen because we’re still a little uncertain on that,” Morgan Huffman, Thomasville director of public services, said. “ We definitely want to find out why there was a breakdown in communication internally. We want to implement any steps that need to be taken to ensure it doesn’t

Coble emphasized that it was not a pleasure trip and that he would have enjoyed himself more in Thomasville. “When I got off the plane [in Moscow], an official traveling with us told me, ‘I just want to assure you that your room is bugged,’” Coble recalled. Rep. Berman asked Coble to lead the U.S. delegation in its meeting with the leaders of the Committee for Families, Women and Children for the Duma (Russia’s counterpart to Congress). “Some Russians are concerned that there have been a couple of wrongful deaths among the 40,000 or so Russian children who have been adopted by Americans,” Coble said. “We did our best to explain to them that we take measures to protect these children, like we would all children in our country. There are many more children in Russia needing to be adopted than there are po-

The city also will continue assisting state and federal agencies in any investigations and will update the public as new information becomes available.

Wednesday will be recognized as Fire Drill Day where citizens are encouraged to map out an evacuation route at their home should a fire start. People should have at least two exits in every room, as well as a smoke alarm. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years and batteries need to be checked at least once a month. Families are encouraged to find a meeting place near their house so firefighters will know everyone is accounted for when they arrive, saving valuable time. “My family and I will be practicing our fire safety Staff Writer Eliot Duke drill this Wednesday, and can be reached at 888-3578, I hope North Carolinor duke@tvilletimes.com.

Coble is a ranking member on the Courts and Intellectual Property Subcommittee. “They assured me that things are getting better over there, but they’re getting better at their own pace,” Coble said of his intellectual property discussion with Russian leaders. Coble is glad he went on that trip, but he is also glad that it’s over. “I never did feel completely at ease, but neither did I feel threatened,” the congressman said. “I was definitely glad to leave.”

Homeowners can protect themselves by having their houses inspected by a professional and installing arc fault circuit interrupters to protect electrical outlets. The circuits continually monitor electrical current and automatically shut it off when unintended arcing occurs. With the seasons changing, heating is the

second leading cause of fire deaths. A third of all home fires and deaths happen between December and February. Space heaters need to be at least three feet from people and anything that can burn, portable heaters should be turned off at bedtime and chimneys should cleaned and inspected before each winter. NFPA has sponsored Fire Prevention Week every year since 1922, and the president has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during the week since 1925, making it the longest running public health and safety observance on record.

Rosemary’s crybabies VIEWPOINT

DAVID HARSANYI Syndicated Columnist There are a number of ideas in this world that never should be introduced to each other; “Christian” and “rock” are one example. “Movie” and “wholesome” are certainly another. And really, one thing we always have been able to count on is the boundless depravity of Hollywood. For this, I used to be grateful. Obviously, those of us with even a tenuous grasp of decency or respect for the rule of law understand that filmmaker Roman Polanski — who, need we be reminded, loaded up a 13-year-old with alcohol and quaaludes before raping her — should find himself putrefying in prison. Even actors must believe this, right? No? The subsequent skirmish over Polanski’s arrest — not exactly a momentous international incident — isn’t between right and left or blue state and red or secularist and social conservative. It’s a gaggle of actors and directors against everyone with a moral IQ higher than Woody Allen’s. Harvey Weinstein, the noted co-executive producer of “Pulp Fiction,” has been one of Polanski’s staunchest defenders. He claimed that the Polish director already had served his time (directing movies in Europe) and that we should trust his take on the situation because “Hollywood has the best moral compass, because it has compassion.” Imagine, if you can, the impenetrability of this man’s ironclad bubble. Weinstein’s success is predicated on dispensing tales from the darkest, most twisted corners of the imagination. Don’t get me wrong; for this, I am also grateful. Some of Weinstein’s ethically magisterial works, for instance, have included “Things To Do in Denver When You’re Dead” (tag line: “They can die quickly. They can die slowly. But they must die!”) and “Death Proof ” (plot: “Two separate sets of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his ‘death proof ’ cars to execute his murderous plans”). Now, I ask you, if Weinstein possessed even a scintilla of decency, would he have subjected this nation to “The Nanny Diaries”? When Weinstein circulated

a pro-Polanski petition after the director was apprehended in Switzerland, Allen — a man who, somewhat prophetically, carried on an affair with a teenager in his film “Manhattan,” one of my all-time favorites — immediately signed up. As did Martin Scorsese, a true giant of cinema, whose depiction of psychotics, mobsters, teenager prostitutes, drugs, mayhem and crass violence can only be called genius. But moral? Compassionate? Not exactly. Polanski himself made a name directing “Repulsion” (plot: “Left alone when her sister goes on vacation, a sexually repressed young beauty goes insane with surreal fantasies of seduction and rape) and “Rosemary’s Baby,” wherein a housewife is imbued with the devil’s spawn (co-starring Charles Grodin!). I enjoy many of these charmingly decadent films for what they are: fantasy, titillating, coarse, absurd and escapist. There are few people who possess the talent to send us to a world where violence is without consequence, where serial infidelity is patched up with a couple of witty sentences and middle-aged men (often, incredibly, resembling the ones directing the films) can secure companionship from lithe 20-year-old beauties as effortlessly as they can jump from building to building chasing would-be terrorists. The problem is that apparently, many of these people have a problem distinguishing between “art” and reality. As well-known blogger Allahpundit recently tweeted, “Word on the street: Polanski’s next film is so good, Europe’s going to let him (redacted) an eightyear-old. It’s THAT GOOD.” Where are the average, serial-marrying, middling Hollywood immorals as their profession is sullied by the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, who asserted that Polanski’s sin wasn’t “rape-rape,” and Debra Winger, who called the rule of law “Philistine collusion”? What is the average American to make of this incident? Despite the coverage, not much. 1) Hollywood denizens are extraordinarily out of touch. 2) We send them to jail when necessary. 3) Always, always ignore them unless they have scripts in their hands.

‘Socialism’ and sham in the Senate VIEWPOINT

JOE CONASON Syndicated Columnist Listening closely to the politicians with the most clout in the debate over health care, it is startling to discover how little they actually seem to know about the subject. Ignorance rules, even among the bipartisan group of senators known as the “Gang of Six,” who supposedly have immersed themselves in the details of this life-and-death issue for many months. If they understood even the most basic facts about how the United States and other advanced countries provide and finance medical care, they simply could not utter the stupid comments that regularly emanate from their lips. Every catalog of mindless remarks about health care must include at least one rant by Charles Grassley, the Iowa Republican who has wasted the country’s time by pretending to seek a bipartisan solution when he simply wants to stall or kill President Obama’s proposed reforms. Not so long ago, Grassley alleged he had been told that “government-run” systems in other countries would have denied treatment to the late Sen. Edward Kennedy for the brain tumor that ended his life in August because he was 77 years old. That statement drew outraged attention from British

doctors, who believed that the Iowa senator was talking about their practices. “Jaw-droppingly untruthful,” protested the chairman of the British Medical Association, who said he found such attacks astonishing. Sen. Mike Enzi, the Wyoming Republican who has connived in the Gang of Six farce, has made similar ominous comments about the medical rationing and reductions in care that would ensue from a “government-run option.” He often says something like this while making speeches in which he also claims to be defending Medicare for seniors — which indicates that he doesn’t understand Medicare is, in fact, a “government-run” program. It is hard to believe that any United States senator could truly be so obtuse about our own governmentrun system, having voted on Medicare finances and regulations annually for years. Yet these same geniuses don’t seem to realize that they have also authorized and financed one of the most thoroughly socialized medical systems in the world — the highly successful, respected and innovative Veterans Health Administration. Yes, the VA system is even more “socialist” than Medicare, because the VA runs the hospitals and hires the doctors directly (like the British system), while Medicare simply pays fees to hospitals and doctors (like the Canadian or French systems). Which brings us to the topic of health care regimes in other countries, and yet another amazing display of ignorance by a member of the Gang of Six. Just the other day, Sen. Kent Conrad tried to explain his fervent opposition to a “public option” by mentioning the way they do things abroad. The Democrat from

North Dakota wanted to tell his “progressive friends” that we can achieve universal coverage and reduce costs — like all of the industrial nations that pay far less than we do — care for all their people and get better results. Referring to systems in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Japan, he said, “All of them contain costs, have universal coverage, have very highquality care and yet are not government-run systems.” It is true that the countries named by Conrad achieve all those benchmarks, but it is false and misleading to claim that none of them have government-run health care. France, which probably has the best system in the world, is essentially a single-payer plan that operates under their Social Security system. Germany prohibits insurance companies from making any profit on basic coverage. Japan provides insurance at a very low cost to families and individuals, with private coverage is used only for a narrow range of services. Switzerland runs insurance plans that are so highly regulated, with prices of services and drugs set by the government, that they would be denounced as communist if anyone tried to impose them here. Conrad, like his colleagues from Iowa and Wyoming, travels abroad on tax dollars, receives excellent briefings and reports from the Congressional Research Service, and employs lots of staff members to help him. Can they really be that dumb? Or do they just assume that we are? Joe Conason writes for the New York Observer (www. observer.com). WALLBURG — Finishing out its nonconference schedule, the Ledford Panthers played near flawless football, roughing up the Spartans of Central Davidson 28-14 Friday night at Panther Stadium. Ball control was the name of the game in the first half, as Central had three possessions to Ledford’s two. Central started the game at its own 35 with an 11-play drive that chewed up 6:00 off the clock. The misdirection offense gave Ledford fits as the Spartans moved the ball down the field with ease. Ledford stiffened when it had to, slamming the door to force a turnover on downs at the 3. In a reversal of its game with East Davidson a week ago, the Panthers controlled the clock on its opening drive, stringing together positive runs while tossing the ball just enough to keep the Central defense out of the box. The Panthers chewed up 8:15 on 19 plays, as Jonathan Reid took an end around from quarterback Steven Fuquay, dashing four yards to the left into the end zone. Fuquay booted through the extra point for a 7-0 Panther lead. “I don’t know if we have ever had a 97-yard drive, but things just started going our way and we were able to sustain a drive and punch one in,” said LHS head coach Chuck Henderson. Central took its second turn on offense and did what it didn’t do on its first drive — put points on the board. Beginning at their own 29, Woodard, Brown and Ivan Grijalva guided the Spartans on a 7:30 march that resulted in a touchdown. Wright converted a key fourth down this time to keep the drive alive, and put the guests on the scoreboard seven plays later, rushing over the left side for an 8-yard touchdown. The two sides opened up the

Ledford quarterback Steven Fuquay scrambles for a first down during Friday night’s game against Central Davidson. The Panthers would score three touchdowns in the second half to notch the win, 28-14 passing game to start the second half, but did not have immediate success. De Greene returned the opening kick down to the Central 27, but Fuquay gave it away via an interception. Brown had no success himself, getting picked off by Ledford defensive back Josh Whitehead at the LHS 37 to hand it back over. Fuquay stuck to the passing game and it eventually paid off, as he connected with Jonathan Shelton on a 28-yard pass play for six. Fuquay drilled the PAT to make it 14-7. Ledford secured complete con-

trol of the game with 44 seconds to go in the third quarter with its special teams play. Woodard dropped back to punt the ball away from his own 10, as Chris Ross went untouched off the left side to block the punt. He sprung to his feet and rushed over to fall on the ball in the end zone for the score and a 21-7 advantage. “They do that rugby kick, and we told the guys he is a runner,” Henderson said. “Ross got through and blocked it and fell on it, so that was definitely a game changer.” Fuquay would add a 1-yard touchdown run and Central

Bulldogs lethargic in win BY ZACH KEPLEY Sports Editor One night after a physical and emotionally draining loss against East Davidson, Thomasville was sluggish in a nonconference tilt with visiting Mt. Airy on Thursday. Skill and talent pulled the Bulldogs through in the end, though, as they survived 5-3. Hector Gonzalez secured a hat trick to help push the THS record to 8-1-2. “We were very lethargic after Wednesday’s game, which I understand,” said head coach Huey Turner. “I would have liked to see more fire and intensity, but when you don’t have fire and still score five goals, you are right where you need to be.” Thomasville peppered

Ledford now turns its focus to the Mid-Piedmont Conference on a high, but will face a lot of unknowns in its first trip into 3A play. “We are riding a little momentum streak right now, so I am really looking forward to seeing what will happen,” Henderson said.

I have never heard Mark Martin say anything that didn’t make sense to me ... until last week. I was watching ABC’s “NASCAR Countdown” show prior to the race at Dover International Speedway, the second event in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Hosts Allen Bestwick, Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace were interviewing Martin, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader, about the very real possibility that he might win that elusive series championship at last. Martin commented once again on how much fun he is having this season, and how his current good fortune is like icing on his career cake, all that kind of stuff. And then he dropped the bomb. He said some-

Tall task ahead for October a month for making memories Blue Devils against OFF THE PORCH talented Hokies BY BRYAN STRICKLAND Durham Herald Sun DURHAM — When Duke traveled to Blacksburg a year ago to face Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils had no reason to be confident. Each of the first four meetings since the Hokies joined the ACC had been lopsided, producing a combined score of 175-31. To make matters worse, Duke was without starting quarterback Thad Lewis. But over the course of three cold, drizzly hours, Duke took some steps toward burying that haunting history. The Blue Devils eventually came up short, but those who return for this year’s game no longer will be short on hope against the Hokies. “That just tells guys to not let the name of the school fool you — everybody is human, said Lewis, who will be in action today when Duke welcomes Virginia Tech. “We can play against anybody on any given day. We had some success against them last year, so who’s to say we can’t have the same success against them this year? Even with backup quarterback Zack Asack struggling mightily in the passing game a year ago, Duke trailed just 7-3 heading to the final two minutes. “Some plays were just that close to busting one, Duke center Bryan Morgan said, “and all we needed was a big play. Instead, the Hokies came up with the big play, salting away a 14-3 victory when Macho Harris picked off an Asack pass and took it 23 yards for a touchdown with 1:23 left. Rest assured, however, that the Blue Devils (2-2) aren’t the only ones who remember the close call. “We had a real hard time with them last year, and their quarterback didn’t play in that one, Virginia Tech coach

Frank Beamer said. “We understand we had better get ready to play a heck of a football game against Duke. Some things, however, have changed since the 2008 meeting, and most aren’t good signs for the Blue Devils. Virginia Tech hoisted the ACC and Orange Bowl championship trophies shortly after edging Duke a year ago, but the Hokies were just 6-4 and unranked headed into that game. This week, the Hokies (3-1, 1-0 ACC) are ranked No. 6. “There’s some confidence gained from playing in that game, but this is a better Virginia Tech team than that team, so we obviously have to be a better Duke team, said Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who hasn’t exactly been talking like his Blue Devils are better than they were a year ago. “We lost a lot of players off that team. We had a team last year that, at that point, was one of the most physical teams in our conference. “This is a more difficult matchup for us. Cutcliffe called the current Virginia Tech team , which ranks second in the ACC with 30.8 points per game, “Beamer-Ball Plus. “They’re the very same defensively, ... and they’ve got that same kicking game, Cutcliffe said. “They’re playing much better offense. “They’re better balanced. They can run it, and they can throw it. They’re running some option; they’re spreading the field. They’re making you defend more things. All of Duke’s film study this week made that abundantly obvious, but the mental images that the Blue Devils have of the 2008 game still could be important. “We can do it, but talk is cheap, Lewis said. “We have to go out there and perform.

DICK JONES Outdoor Columnist There’s an indefinable quality in the air. It has something to do with humidity, the air is clear and results in sharp blue skies and bright vistas but there is more to it than that. It has something to do with temperature since the mornings are cool and the heat doesn’t build to a level that makes you sweat by noon but that’s not it, either. It has something to do with the length of the days since morning comes later and sundown sooner. But mostly it’s a result of anticipation that I’m feeling excited. This is absolutely the best time of year. I love September because it starts the fall season but October is the month that the real fun starts. I just bought my wife, Cherie, a new .22 and I plan for us to do a little squirrel hunting this year. Forty some years ago, Daddy was forward thinking enough to put a crude little ž inch tube

scope in the old JC Higgins .22 that was the only gun I ever saw Daddy shoot. My cousin, Buck Proctor, and I worked the squirrels around Ledford without mercy, Buck hunting with his little Browning and me with Daddy’s rifle. My most memorable hunt was when we saw a squirrels tail hanging over the crotch of a tree but we couldn’t see the squirrel. Buck said, “I’ll fire a shot up there and make him move, you be ready. When Buck fired, the squirrel’s tail wafted down in the breeze, but he apparently stayed right where he was. We saw that bob tailed squirrel a couple more times that season, and he survived, though I’m sure he was humiliated by the other squirrels. Of course, my fondest October memory is of the full moon beach trip. From my earliest recollection, the Jones family went to Kure or Carolina Beach every full moon of October. This tradition continued after I was out of the house and on my own. In the earliest years, the trip was taken in a ’54 Plymouth with fishing rods strapped to the gutters. Later, we went in the ’60 Rambler wagon that Daddy couldn’t have been more proud of if it had been an H1 Hummer. Often, my Uncle Tal was along. He was my favorite uncle because he always seemed to have time for me and

loved to clown around. His whole name was Tallmadge Lafayette Jones, seriously. In the early years, we stayed at Teeters Cottages, in Kure Beach, and later at Harvey Binswanger’s house, on the corner of Canal Drive and 9th Avenue, in Carolina Beach. When my sisters started going to Ledford High, I was the only kid and Tal and me were roommates. One year, we stayed in a house on Florida Avenue, for some unremembered reason, and the house was full of frogs. There were tiny tree frogs by the dozens in the house and, during the week, some even wound up in the refrigerator. That year, I also found an abandoned wood boat on the bank of the waterway, dug it out of the sand and put it out and paddled around in it. Of course I didn’t tell Mama and Daddy about that adventure, I didn’t even tell Uncle Tal. I learned to fish alone on those trips and to appreciate doing something alone. I think I might have been hungry for adventure because I was reading books like Robinson Crusoe and Moby Dick in those days. The act of getting a sack of shrimp from Grandma, (our nick name for the matronly lady married to Sam Blake, who ran the pier) and walking up the beach towards the inlet made me feel like a man. I don’t think I caught any real fish on

those trips, but I learned that it’s fun sometimes to do something alone. Of course, another fond October memory is of going to the fair. I still love the fair and rarely miss it. It’s not that I enjoy the rides, I grew up around cows, pigs, and chickens so that’s not the source of attraction, either. I think the attraction is a combination of the crowd and the food. An agricultural fair is such a cross section of humanity that I find it irresistible. The walk around the fair surrounded by everybody, from inner city kids wearing wild fashions to farm kids who live their lives pretty much like I did 50 years ago, is an exercise in cultural diversity. Stockbrokers and rednecks, Hells Angels and Sunday school teachers, couch potatoes and mountain climbers, those who listen to public radio and those who listen to heavy metal and hip hop, all come to the fair. And, of course, there’s the fair food. I cannot resist the roasted corn, the Italian sausage, the funnel cakes, and whatever outrageously decadent confection the folks who haul food trailers from county to county come up with every year. From as early as I can remember, the fair, squirrel season, and that fishing trip were all promises of the good

When his dribble rolled out a little to far, teammate Sam Everhart was there to blast it into the net for a 1-0 THS lead. Mt. Airy needed 10 minutes to get it back on a corner kick, but Thomasville had a knack for having a response to Mt. Airy goals a minute later. Izzy Escamilla and Gonzalez worked together on this tally, playing a twoman passing game. Escamilla set up Gonzalez for a one-timer on a drop pass, as the ball rocketed past the goalkeeper into the back of the net, allowing the Dogs to retake the lead. Gonzalez scored his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute, pushing the advantage to 3-1 at intermission. just inside the 18-yard box to score. Thinking that goal would be enough to seal the deal, the Bulldogs got a bit lazy and backed off. As a result, Mt. Airy scored another goal with 13 minutes remaining as the same defensive player had a missed assignment. That made it a 4-3 game as the Mt. Airy team on the far sideline was fired up. “We had a captain that did not mark up either time and his man scored on both of them,” Turner said. Thomasville had no panic in them, instead, coming right back two minutes later to put the game out of reach. Escamilla received the ball on the wing and attracted two defenders. He found Gonzalez, who turned and created for himself for the final tally. Despite having a twogoal lead with 10 minutes to play, Turner was still not satisfied and was quite frustrated. “Our inexperience doesn’t teach us to come out with that killer mentality,” Turner said. “We shouldn’t have to get wakeup calls and that is what scares me with us being so young. At least we do have the capability and firepower to respond to anything that comes up.” Thomasville will have a challenging couple of games next week as it

plays Central Carolina Conference leader West Davidson on Monday and Salisbury later in the week. “Conference right now top to bottom is tight all the way around, so we need to come away with two wins next week,” said Turner.

The Cavaliers have defeated the Tar Heels in nine of the past 11 meetings, including the past three matchups. “If you take a look ... at the film — don’t read the newspapers, don’t listen to talk radio, look at the film — and the film says this is a talented, good football team, Davis said. The Tar Heels (3-1, 01) are looking to bounce back from a poor performance in their ACC-opening loss to Georgia Tech a week ago. UNC struggled to move the ball and put up just 154 yards of offense against the Yellow Jackets.

Sports Editor CHAPEL HILL — When Virginia visits North Carolina today (noon, WRAL), the Cavaliers will be searching for their first victory of the season. The Cavaliers are 0-3 after an embarrassing season-opening loss to William & Mary, a Football Championship Subdivision team, and losses to No. 16 TCU and Southern Miss. But even though Virginia is winless this season, UNC coach Butch Davis called them a dangerous team earlier this

And while the Tar Heels’ offense won’t be facing a defense as statistically strong as Georgia Tech’s today, it will be facing a Virginia defense that is unusual in the college ranks. The Cavaliers use a 3-4 defensive scheme, which gives them an extra linebacker for blitzing and pass defense. “It’s unique and the people that they use to play it are unique, Davis said. “It’s probably the biggest, strongest, most physical front seven certainly that we’ve played thus far this season. The Cavs, which had an extra week to pre-

pare for the Tar Heels thanks to a bye week, are ranked ninth in the ACC as they’ve given up 344.3 yards per game and 11th in scoring defense (31 ppg). They also have the 11th-ranked rushing defense, having given up 180.7 yards per game on the ground. But while the numbers seem to favor the Tar Heels, that doesn’t mean a win today is a given. In 2008, UNC led Virginia 103 with 2:14 remaining before the Cavs rallied for a 16-13 win in overtime. “It’s definitely ... known on this team [that] we

like where we would be if we could walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, or what it would be like to hear the actual thoughts inside another person’s head. It is reminiscent of junior high school spelling class, when we learned the difference between sympathy — to commiserate with someone — and empathy — to actually feel what someone else is feeling. Empathy is way more intense. It’s been a typically busy week in NASCAR, albeit an unorthodox one, ranging from uncomfortably close tolerances on some of the cars to an unexpected collaboration between Richard Petty Motorsports and the Saudi Arabian royal family. With so much fodder to foment in their gray matter, it might be pretty interesting to get inside their heads and experience — briefly — to find out what some of the 12 drivers in the 2009 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup are thinking about right now. Kurt Busch, for example, has been remarkably stoic about the accolades habitually heaped on the head of his younger sibling, Kyle. It has to be tough for Kurt, a former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, to repeatedly hear that his kid brother has the potential to be one of the greatest race car drivers of all time. But Kyle didn’t make the Chase this year. So you couldn’t blame Kurt for thinking, “Take that, squirt. Carl Edwards, who was still hobbling around on those crutches the last time I checked, might be of the opinion that playing Frisbee isn’t nearly as much fun as it used to be. You think? Brian Vickers, despite a 10th-place standing heading into the race at Kansas, is probably feeling pretty good about things overall. Making the Chase with a relatively new team validates his position as a driver to be reckoned with. Also, after a few dust-ups with Kyle Busch this season, and beating him into the Chase by only a handful of points, Vickers too might be thinking, “Take that, squirt. Kasey Kahne has probably spent some time wondering how Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al-Saud will feel about the Budweiser showers in Victory Lane. And how Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al-Saud will feel about Jimmy Spencer. I can’t begin to imagine what might be going through the minds of Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon — who really are two of the greatest race car drivers in history. But hey, they’re Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon, so I’m thinking that’s good enough for them. Juan Pablo Montoya might be thinking, “Did you guys like that lullaby I sang to you for 26 weeks? Did it make you guys sleepy? Did you think I would keep singing that same song in the Chase? Dream on! Currently tied with one of the most popular drivers in history after winning his third consecutive championship in 2008, Jimmie Johnson might be thinking,

“Sorry about that, Cale. But I’m equally willing to bet Mark Martin is thinking, “Sorry about that, Jimmie. Because no matter what Martin says on television in his typically self-effacing way, you know that championship trophy means the world to him. The Chase is fun and exciting, but it is also stressful, and frustrating, and there are many distractions along the way. In addition to good equipment and driving skill, it takes mental toughness to make it to the end of that road before anyone else does. The obvious answer to the question, “Where would you be if you walked a mile in someone else’s shoes? is “A mile further down the road. That’s a considerable margin by NASCAR standards, but not a necessary one. To win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, a driver is required to score only a single point more than the next closest guy. And don’t think for one minute they’re not thinking about that.

Carolina kicking game has been suspect early on BY BRIANA GORMAN Durham Herald Sun CHAPEL HILL — No one is more surprised by the shaky kicking of North Carolina’s Casey Barth this season than the sophomore from Wilmington. Barth is 4-of-7 in field goals this season, including a miss against Georgia Tech on Saturday that could have given his team their first points of the game and some momentum. Even though Barth has made all three field goal attempts from between 20 and 29 yards, he has missed both from the 30- to 39-yard range. His other missed attempt was from 45 yards. “I guess I’m just getting a little antsy,” said Barth, who also missed an extra point after being perfect a year ago. “In practice, I make just about everything, so it’s kind of frustrating when I’m going out there and not hitting the ones I know I can hit.” Barth, who has missed a field goal in each of the past three games, said he has been raising his head too soon and not finishing the kick, but mostly he’s been struggling mentally not technically. He said kicking is 90 percent mental, and the best way to prepare for games is to visualize your kicks. It’s a trick he picked up from older brother Connor Barth, a former UNC kicker who went through his own sophomore slump when he made just 11 of 21 field goals in 2005. “[Connor] talked to me

MONTH From page B2 times coming, like killing the hogs, cutting the wood for the sheds at Thanksgiving, and Christmas. October set the precedent for the best part of the year. It’s memories like this that keep us warm in the coldest months when most of the hunting and fishing is over. These memories are the ones that are so much fun to recall around the fire when we get old. I guess that’s what October is best for, making memories. Get out there and make some, you’re going to get old sometime and you’ll need something to tell.

KENAN From page B4 haven’t beaten them in three years, so we want to come out and beat them this week,” said UNC quarterback T.J. Yates, who didn’t play against the Cavs a year ago game because of an injury. And while Virginia may be desperate for a win, UNC is hungry to prove its critics wrong after the tough loss to Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels will rely on a defense that is ranked No. 14 nationally and will be going against an offense that is in the bottom of the ACC standings in almost every category. The UNC players have said this week that they will use the loss to Georgia Tech as motivation for their second ACC game. “[Virginia is] a fundamentally sound team,” UNC cornerback Kendric Burney said. “They do the little things right, but we’ve got a little bit of a chip on our shoulders.”

a lot after the game, on Saturday and Sunday, just about the mental part,” said Casey, who always talks to his brother before and after games. “Like visualizing the night before, he said that really helps him a lot. He actually saw a sport psychologist, and she really helped him with the visualizing part and that really gave him a lot more confidence in the games.” UNC coach Butch Davis said the coaching staff has full confidence in

pair are getting more comfortable with each other in practice. They also were high school teammates at Wilmington Hoggard, and House was the primary snapper for the first half of the 2008 season. “We’ve had three different snappers on field goals, so I’ve been trying to get used to that,” Barth said. “For the past two weeks, it’s helped out a lot because we’ve worked with one and he’s really good.” But even though Barth

has been working with a snapping carousel, he said that is not solely to blame for his kicking woes. He said he needs to stop thinking so much and just kick the ball. “It’s just tough because you can’t really prepare for a game situation,” Barth said. “I just got to get into the mental part of it more — seeing the kick the night before, visualize it before the game, [visualize] what’s going to happen.”

Sometimes kickers are like quarterbacks — they’re their own worst critics. They nitpick. They want to be perfect, and I know he wants to be perfect. He wants to make every kick.” It also doesn’t help that Barth has had a different snapper for each of first three games of the season. Senior Lowell Dyer

Deer crashes rise in state TIMES STAFF REPORT

CHAPEL HILL — Motor vehicles crashes involving deer rose to an all-time high in North Carolina in 2008, even as the total number of motor-vehicle crashes and total vehicle miles driven dropped from the previous year. A new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that crashes reported to police involving deer last year on roadways in the state increased to 19,693, up from 19,277 in 2007. In that same period, total reported crashes fell from 224,307 in 2007 to 214,358 in 2008. Vehicle miles traveled also dropped, by 2 percent. “Deer crashes continue to be a growing concern for motorists in North Carolina,” said David Harkey, director of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center. “In five years, since 2004, we’ve seen a 27 percent increase in deer-related crashes, while total crashes during the same period decreased by 7 percent.” Of the total reported automobile crashes in North Carolina in 2008, deer were cited as a factor in 9.2 percent, up from 8.6 percent in 2007. Wake County topped the list with 1084 deer-related crashes. Other counties with high numbers

of deer crashes in 2008 include Guilford, Rockingham, Duplin, Pitt and Mecklenburg. While a crash involving a deer can happen at any time, drivers should be particularly careful both in the early morning hours and the early evening hours, Harkey said. Almost 80 percent of deer-related crashes in 2008 occurred between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. White-tailed deer can be seen on the move around North Carolina roadways at any time of year. However, 50 percent of all deer-related crashes occurred during the three months of October, November and December. Deer are particularly restless and agitated during these months due to mating season and locating new food resources, Harkey said. He also noted that while the figures reflect the total number of deerrelated crashes reported to law enforcement agencies, there is anecdotal evidence that many more such crashes occur than are reported. The UNC Highway Safety Research Center offers the following tips for lowering the risk of a crash with a deer. • Slow down. In areas with a large deer population, or where there are deer warning signs, drivers should reduce their speed.

MILITARY NEWS TIMES STAFF REPORT

Kearse graduates basic combat training

Army Pfc. La’Coyia M. Kearse has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. She is the granddaughter of Carol Kearse of Smith St., Thomasville, N.C. Kearse is a 2006 graduate of Thomasville High School.

Davis graduates basic combat training

Army Reserve Spec. Matthew A. Davis has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. Davis earned distinction as an honor gradu-

ate. He is the son of Sharon Goulding of Old Linwood Road, Lexington, N.C., and grandson of Billie Garges of Old Westfield Road, Pilot Mountain, N.C. The specialist is a 2009 graduate of Central Davidson High School, Lexington.

• Always wear a seat belt. It offers the best protection from injuries in the event of a crash. • Watch for eyes reflecting from headlights. Try to look far down the road and scan the roadsides, especially when driving through field edges, heavily wooded areas or posted deer crossing areas. The sooner you see a deer on or approaching a road, the better the chances of avoiding a crash. • Remember that deer travel in herds. If one deer crosses the road in front of you, don’t assume that all is clear. Deer herds can be fairly large, and the animals

often move one right behind the other. • Do not place confidence in “deer whistles” or other “ultra-sonic” devices that claim to prevent deer collisions. • Maintain control of your vehicle. It is important not to lose control of your vehicle or veer into the path of an oncoming vehicle to avoid contact with an animal. Loss of control usually results in a more serious crash. The complete deer-motor vehicle crash data for all North Carolina counties is available at www. h s r c. u n c. e d u / s a f e t y _ info/animal_vehicle/index.cfm.
