n those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom

his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. - Luke 2: 1-20 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to

worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. - Matthew 2:1-12 11

The Magic of Christmas • 2011

Christmas is the story of Jesus. Jesus was born on Christmas day in Bethlehem. This is the story that will tell you how Christmas began. Mary was once in her house one day. And an angel came along and told her some good news. She was very scared but the angel told her not to be frightened. The angel told her that she was going to have a baby and marry a man named Joseph and they were supposed to name the baby, “Baby Jesus”. Mary and Joseph rode a donkey and went to Bethlehem. It took them a very long time to get there. There were travelers coming already to an inn keeper’s spot. The inn keeper and his wife were very busy that day preparing rooms and serving food. Then out of nowhere Mary and Joseph came riding on a donkey, needing a room to stay in. But all had been taken. They asked and asked. When they finally got to the innkeeper’s house, he said that there was no room but they can stay in the stable. Mary and Joseph were kind of weirdly looking at him, but they went to the stable and had the baby Jesus. And while they were having the baby Jesus, really really really far away some shepherds were watching their sheep. And then, out of nowhere, a big big group of angels came along and told them about the baby Jesus. The shepherds were frightened and didn’t know if that was really real. They asked questions to each other about what the angels were saying. They said that if they followed the star it might lead them to where they were going. So they followed the big star, it was the

brightest one in the sky. When they arrived all the towns people were talking and talking. But Mary and Joseph were in the stable and didn’t notice anything. The shepherds arrived in the town. All the townspeople were surprised and asked the shepherds, “What are you doing here?” “We have come to see the King. The little baby King,” said the shepherds. Then three kings came along and they had come to see the baby Jesus too. The three kings, also known as wise men and the shepherds asked the inn keeper and his wife, “Can you please lead us to the baby Jesus that was born in your stable?” The inn keeper and his wife led them to the stable. They were quite curious about this. “Here is the baby Jesus.” They heard Mary singing a little tiny lullaby to the baby while they were coming up to the stable. The three kings had brought gifts to the baby Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They bowed down as the baby Jesus was about to fall asleep. The villagers and neighbors still wanted to see the baby. They did not know that a king was going to be born in their town. We celebrate Christmas because of the birth of Jesus. If it wasn’t for Him, we wouldn’t be here. We would all have a sinful heart. And why we celebrate Christmas is from the birth of Jesus Christ. We love Jesus and celebrate His birth by giving presents at Christmas. It’s not all about getting presents, or bragging about what you have. It’s always about thinking about other people and those that don’t have anything and don’t have a family. I love Jesus Christ. We all should. Rachel Trivette Age 8 Colfax, NC

My Christmas Memory... On Christmas morning we four kids would come down to a

beautiful decorated tree but what caught our eye was what was under the tree-toys. Toys of every description, what we had asked Santa for among nuts and fruits in beautiful disaray. And we could play and eat.

Sincerely, Ruby O’Connor
