MASCOT ANIMALS PROMOTE ADOPTION

Who better to promote adopting animals than animals? Well...maybe they aren't the same "kind" of animals, but Houston's mascots are ready to help rescue homeless pets from our shelters and rescue groups. We owe a debt of gratitude to these mascots who have very busy schedules for taking their time to highlight adoption (Orbit, Orion, and TORO featured here with Editor Michelle Mantor and photographer Allison McPhail). Enjoy learning more about them as well as adopting a pet in 2023 in our feature. Cover photos by Allison McPhail of Evin Thayer Studios; Post Production by Desiree Lonsway of BigIdeasCS.com.

Say hello to 2023 and our annual Double Issue! As the world continues to turn, some things seem crazier and crazier to me but the one thing that holds constant and gives me a sense of hope is the amount of people willing to help homeless or abused animals (and protect wildlife). It's true that there are bad actors who don't care a whit about animals and those are the bozos the rest of us are "cleaning up after" by providing healthcare, food, safety, and a new home to animals that, through no fault of their own, have ended up on the streets or at shelters and rescues. Or, the animals may have had a loving owner but circumstances have forced them to surrender their pet to an animal welfare organization. Either way, Houston's shelters and rescues work diligently every single day to provide for the needs of these pets and in this feature story, we want to highlight their amazing work and dedication.

To add a touch of fun (because let's face it, animals are fun!) we asked Houston's mascots to join us for a photoshoot at Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society with some adoptable animals and some animals that are not for adoption, but rather are ambassadors for the many species of animals that are in need of a home. In this feature you will meet the mascots from the Houston Rockets, Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo and Dash, Houston Sabercats, Sugar Land Space Cowboys and University of Houston, who each answer a few questions about themselves and pose with a myriad of furry friends.

I also want to give a special shout out to our photographer, Allison McPhail of Evin Thayer Studios for her hard work on two separate photoshoots and capturing all of the mascots' personalities for our feature. Plus a big thank you to Desiree Lonsway for her amazing production skills in creating the cover artwork...well done ladies!

If you have space for a pet in your home, consider adopting in 2023 from any area shelter or rescue (see a partial list on page 35) or if adopting isn't an option, these organizations would welcome volunteers, fosters or donations.

Also in this issue is a special Valentine's Day section, given this double issue spans February, which is also National Pet Dental Month. Check out our shopping section, Tails of Love Contest and more. Plus, we highlight other product trends for 2023 and the Pantone Institute's Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, on page 40.

As we kick off another year together, I am grateful for our sponsors support... without them, there would be no PetTalk so please shop with them or when you use their services, let them know you found them in PetTalk. I am also immensely grateful for you, the reader, and I hope to bring joy to your heart, smiles to your face and edification of all things animal as we traverse 2023 together. Please sign up for our newsletter on our website and follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more content, contests, news and more.

Here's to Happy Tales in 2023!

A 2023 New Year's Eve To Remember... Henrietta

It was New Year’s Eve and my ragtag crew of compadres decided we should try something NEW instead of going to our usual watering hole, the Salty Dog. In their infinite wisdom, they reasoned that New Year’s Eve was about trying something NEW. I didn’t want to dampen their spirits by pointing out that this lively excuse to party was the ringing in of a New Year–a time to celebrate with friends, reflect on the past year and look with renewed hope to the coming year–or some such codswallop, as the Kiwis would say. After much jawboning, the decision was made to go bowling. I hate bowling because I would like to keep my digits but I reasoned they have junk food and libations. So, yes, I’ll go. I will even wear the goofy shoes and not complain. I mean, we are trying something new, right?

We piled into Muffy Macallister’s wreck, I mean car, and headed to Big Rack Bowling Alley. I figured I might not be allowed in a place called Big Rack but apparently this is a bowling term, not a reference to bust size. Next we went through the unsettling process of paying for shoes worn by hundreds of other strangers and as always, they only had 3 shoes in size 6. I have never been able to figure this out when I bowl. Where is the other shoe? Is it like the socks that get eaten by the dryer? Do they only have unipods and tripods coming to bowl? Geez…what am I supposed to do wearing 3 shoes? Penelope put her gigantic brain to the problem and got me a 4th shoe in a size 7. That’s awesome. Now as I trot down the lane to let loose of this insanely heavy object, one shoe will be left at the ball return machine.

Again, I decided to keep with the “try some thing new” attitude and not complain.

As I looked around at the other bowling patrons, I discerned this was not a Mensa club meeting. Have you ever looked around at the people at a bowling alley? Well, don’t. First, I came to the conclusion that underwear are not required at this establishment. I saw more cracks than Mick Jagger’s face. Second, it was quite apparent that there are two kinds of people bowling - those that are aficionados of the sport and those that had nothing else to do. For those of us that don’t bowl, we usually end up at a bowling alley when there is absolutely no other form of entertainment we can think of. It’s kinda like, “Well, we could go bowling or we

could stab ourselves with forks.”

As I sat there in my 3 shoes concentrating on not complaining, I realized that this sport does have one redeeming quality–you can eat while you play. I mean, you don’t see a tennis player say “Hey, let me finish this chicken wing real quick before I serve.” I like that part.

Finally it was my turn and as I approached the ball machine, in my 3 size 6's and one size 7 shoe, Cousin Hortense said, “Henrietta, do you need the bumpers?” I had a sudden mental picture of her tail being stuck in her mouth with blunt force but I maintained my composure. “No, HORtense”, I replied, “I’m go

sport and there is something wrong with my ball…it’s crooked," I muttered. Maybe I should have said yes to the bumpers. And a coloring book and sippy cup.

So much for trying something NEW. After a mammoth sized dispute over the score (basically no one in our brainiac group could figure out how to calculate it), I announced it was time to get the real party started and head to the Salty Dog where we could ring in the New Year with a proper cocktail. The next time the idea of bowling comes up, I think I'll just say, "Spare me!"

HOUSTON CAT CLUB

70th Annual Charity Cat Show

Come celebrate the Platinum Jubilee on January 14-15 at the Hilton Houston North with the Houston Cat Club. This year, 225 purebred cats and kittens from around the country plus beautiful household pets will compete for awards given by ten expert judges from the Cat Fanciers’ Association, the world’s largest registry.

Some of the felines at the Houston show are there just to be adored…and petted. These special Pet-Me cats are always a hit with visitors. Household pets are also popular and are judged on health and beauty. Purebred cats are judged on a written standard of confirmation for their breed. Up to forty-two breeds may be represented at the show.

In addition to the judging there will be cat costume contests on both days, Meet the Breeds on both days, and a Meow Mall full of the best variety of toys, treats, and gifts for cats and those who love them available anywhere.

The Houston Cat Club Charity Cat Show is a 501(c)3 all-volunteer organization that supports animal welfare groups in Houston and surrounding areas. In addition, animal shelters

receive free space at the show to present their beautiful cats for adoption.

The Houston Cat Club has donated almost a million dollars over its 69 shows. All the donations come from visitor admission fees. If you can’t visit the show, please consider making your tax-deductible donation to support the Houston Cat Club’s charitable work at HoustonCatClub.org.

Sponsors at the show include All Cats Veterinary Hospital, Paul’s Roofing and Remodeling, Westbury Animal Hospital, and the Cat Fanciers’ Association. MASCOTS TO THE RESCUE HOUSTON

SHOWCASE OF ADOPTABLE PETS & RESOURCES

Animals used in this photoshoot may have been adopted by time of publication; however, there are many wonderful animals at Houston SPCA, Houston Humane Society and other shelters and rescues looking for a forever home.

Pets add so much joy to our lives, and what could be more joyous than giving a homeless pet a place to call home forever? At PetTalk, we believe adopting a pet and providing a safe, loving, respectful future is a valuable endeavor and it’s also FUN!

So let’s have some FUN in 2023 and if you are looking to add a furry friend to the family, then look no further than the many shelters and rescue groups that Houston has to offer.

To add to the FUN of showing off a little sampling of animals who are looking for a home, we invited Houston’s professional mascots, as well as the University of Houston mascots, to join us in highlighting the plight of

homeless animals and to advocate for adoption. Or, if adopting isn’t possible for you, all of our shelters and rescues need volunteers, fosters and donations. There is always a way to help and if 2023 finds you looking for purpose, then we’ve got one for you!

All of the mascots that joined us for our photoshoots at Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society were so gracious with their time. They have very hectic schedules so we are thankful to the mascots and their handlers for taking the time to make this FUN feature story and we hope you enjoy learning more about each mascot as well as Houston’s adoptable pets and resources.

CLUTCH

MASCOT FOR THE HOUSTON ROCKETS

1.

First, we want to thank you for also appearing in our December issue, Our readers loved your essay on Kindness. Sometimes bears are not known for their kindness:) - so what makes you such a cuddly bear? The love and passion I have for the city of Houston and our Houston Rockets is what makes me cuddly and lovable.

2. What is your favorite thing to do as a mascot? Eat popcorn and cheer on our team!

3.

The Rockets play a lot of away games. Do you travel to all of them and if so, do you get any time to sightsee? I don’t travel to away games - I stay in Houston to travel around our community and be present in making people smile!

4.

It’s a known fact that bears like to eat berries, but what else do you like to eat to keep that “trim” figure? To keep my elite level physical physique, I eat a lot of popcorn, cookies, and hot dogs. Sometimes I’ll sprinkle some berries on my salmon - that might be my favorite dish.

5.

It’s un-Bearable to see these homeless pets in shelters looking for a new home. We appreciate you taking time to highlight their plight. Do you have any message about adoption for our readers? Pet adoption is one of the most rewarding and kind things you can do. To be able to change the life of an animal and make it happy and comfortable can be one of the greatest feelings in the world!

6. If you could have a super-power, what would it be? Communicate with my fellow animals of different species!

ADOPT FROM HOUSTON SPCA

If you haven't visited the Houston SPCA’s William and Evelyn Griffin Campus for All Animals, you really should! Its sprawling campus is home to more than a dozen programs and services, but no surprise that one of the busiest areas is the Adoption Center where you can interact with small dogs, large dogs, cats and kittens and small pets, all in need of a good home. (Horses and farm animals require an application and appointment). Have an animal-lovin’ kid? Early registration for summer Critter Camp begins February 6. Interested in volunteering? Learn more or sign up for either at HoustonSPCA.org and you’ll already be making a difference in 2023. Deemed as an iconic nonprofit, the Houston SPCA has grown along with our beloved city, as they continually adapted their efforts to help all animals in our community. Houston SPCA has saved and provided services for millions of animals since 1924.

DIESEL

MASCOT FOR HOUSTON DYNAMO AND DASH

1.

As the mascot for two professional soccer teams, the Dynamo and Dash, you  must be super busy! What is game day like? Game days are really intense, fast-paced and so much fun! It's truly incredible how much goes into a game day. I love being part of it and hearing the constant energy from our fans. There's nothing better!

2.

What other type of appearances are you involved in? We do all types of appearances in the greater Houston area and even occasionally a little further away. I do birthday parties, school appearances, corporate events, lovely cups of coffee with friends and so much more!

3.

What is your favorite part of being a mascot? Meeting and interacting with so many different people. It's just so much fun to go out and make someone smile or laugh and brighten their day a bit! Walking out with the players on game day isn't too bad either.

We know that foxes can’t talk, but if you COULD say something, what would it be? I do not know what the fox says…however, foxes can make over 40 unique sounds so it would probably be barks or howls, maybe some gekkering!

Tell us something about Diesel that would surprise our readers. My best friend is a dog! He really values his privacy so I won't tell you his name, but I will tell you he is an adopted mixed breed. Grateful for our pals at Houston Pets Alive...they do great work as a no-kill shelter and we volunteer there often!

SCRATCH

MASCOT FOR HOUSTON SABERCATS

1.

The Houston Sabercats professional Rugby team has been part of H-Town since 2017, yet lots of folks still don’t know about the team. So Scratch, tell our readers why coming out to see a Rugby match would be a good idea. If you like football, soccer, or basketball you will LOVE rugby! We are all a family! Fans even get to go on the field after the game for pictures and autographs with the players!

2.

Let’s clear up any misconception about what you are…a handsome Saber-toothed Tiger. Is that correct? Thank you, BUT...technically,  I am not a tiger. Scientific name–Smilodon and I belong to the big cat family.  3. What is your favorite part of being a mascot? Being able to tackle other mascots! (Rugby teaches safe tackling!) 4.

When the team is crouched in that huddle with everyone laying on the ground with the other team, known as a Scrum for you Rugby experts, what secrets are they telling? They are the secrets of the dark arts. Trust me you don't want to know. You might lose an ear! 5.

If you could have one wish, what would it be? A championship title that comes with a lifetime of meat! 6.

Tell us something about you that would surprise our readers. I have survived in this Houston heat for 5 years now, and even prospered to the playoffs!

HOUSTON SPCA CRUELTY INVESTIGATIONS

Scratch and Clutch are having some fun with a few of the members of Houston SPCA’s animal cruelty division, but animal cruelty is no laughing matter! The 10-member team conducts investigations and works closely with local law enforcement in and around greater Houston to stop cruelty including HPD and Harris County Constable Precinct 1, and nine other surrounding counties.

If you believe animal cruelty is taking place in Houston or surrounding areas, please complete the online report at HoustonSPCA.org or call 713-869-7722. Please do not report cruelty or injured animals by email or on social media.

Animal cruelty is a CRIME in Texas!

Since Dr. Shipley performed a three-hour reconstructive surgery, Sharky has made a full recovery.

SASHA & SHASTA

MASCOTS FOR UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON

1.

You two are the cutest cougars! So cute in fact, that you are the only college mascots we asked to join our Mascots to the Rescue! Tell us, how do you maintain your charm and spirit for the U of H Cougars? It's easy to do what we do when we have such a great fan base at the University of Houston. We support our Coogs in everything they do from academics to athletics and they support us!

2. Two cougars are of course better than one and you are a great duo, but do you ever have to split up for appearances? We are in high demand around campus and while it would be impossible for one Coog to do it all, we have the benefit of being two Coogs!

3. What is the most fun you’ve ever had as the U of H mascots? There are way too many memories to count! We've had so many great opportunities over the years... Bowl trips, basketball tournaments, and exciting home games just to name a few!

4. What’s the most asked question you get from fans? How many touchdown push ups do you have to do each season?? Our answer... A lot!!!

5.

As a carnivore, is it tempting to devour other team’s mascots? We aren't worried about that as long as our team is ready to win!

6. You are of course very special cougars that are kind to small animals like these two puppies! What else about you would surprise our readers? That we love all animals big and small! We hope that one day every homeless pet finds a forever home and family to love!

TIPS FOR THE FIRST 30 DAYS AFTER ADOPTING A PET

Be Patient: Allow your new furry friend time to get comfortable with their surroundings. Exposure to new things should be gradual and encouraged, NOT forced.

Establish Crate Training Immediately: The ability to quietly hang out in a crate is essential for all dogs, cats, bunnies, etc. Crates are used for transport in the car but also provide a safe, quiet place at home to be used as necessary. Start with your pet in the crate for short periods with a toy or treat, then gradually increase time.

Potty Train Positively: Provide positive reinforcement for potty training. Yelling or hitting an animal only creates fear and misunderstanding. A REGULAR schedule goes a long way in potty training. Seek a professional trainer if needed because the earlier your pup learns, the less bad habits to overcome later.

Provide Toys, Exercise: Offering your pet playtime is essential for their physical and mental well-being. Just like us humans, pets need to use their minds and bodies for overall health.

Establish a Veterinary Relationship: Taking your pet to the vet right away will be the beginning of a long relationship for both you and your pet. Vet visits do not need to be stressful. Routine visits are essential for health and establishing with your pet that vet visits need not be feared.

TORO MASCOT FOR THE HOUSTON TEXANS

1.

TORO, you look as fit as the Texans players. How do you stay in shape with your busy schedule? I’m always lifting… people's spirits. Also gotta keep up with my cardio so I’m ready for the running of the bulls.

2.

Are the aerial stunts as scary as they look? If you’ve been to NRG Stadium, you’ve probably seen me zipline across the field or rappel from the catwalk. It’s just as scary as it looks.

3.

Most bulls are aggressive, but you seem to be a Bull of a different breed, even kind enough to promote adoption of homeless pets. How do you let your fans know that you are a nice Bull? I’m always passing out hugs and high fives at the games... except for Cowboys fans.

4.

What is the silliest question a fan has ever asked? Is it hot in there?” We live in Houston, TX.

If you could be a super-hero for a day, what would you want your super-powers to be? InvisiBULLity… would allow for even better prank videos.

ORBIT

MASCOT FOR HOUSTON ASTROS

1.

First off Orbit, congratulations on the Astros winning the World Series. We know you played a large part in that victory because you make the fans smile! Tell us what it was like when the final game was over and the title of World Champions was clenched. I was on top of the world! And I’ve been to space and know what the top of the world looks like!

2. How do you autograph balls if your hands are so big? I use a big pen and have fantastic handwriting!

3.

If you could swap places for a day with another mascot in any sport, who would it be? I’m pretty comfortable just being me. I am a little envious of the cold weather mascots, but Minute Maid Park has air conditioning, so it’s not too bad!

4. We noticed these puppies and kittens were smitten with you. Do you have that affect on all animals? I think me and most animals have a lot in common and are able to bond over our furriness. Is that even a word?

5. What’s it like out there in space? It’s pretty dark out there, but like Texas, the stars are big and bright!

MASCOT FOR THE SUGAR LAND SPACE COWBOYS

1.

The Sugar Land Space Cowboys used to be known as the Skeeters. When did the name change and what prompted it? We must say, Space Cowboys is way better! With the transition from independent ball to affiliated Triple A baseball, the re-brand to Sugar Land Space Cowboys came about to reflect a strong connection to the Astros family, while standing out as a unique identity aligned with vibrant, progressive, and family focused values of the City of Sugar Land Community!

2.

Do the Space Cowboys ever have “bring your dog” to the game events (because we all know that dogs love the same two things all Americans love, Baseball and Hot Dogs!)? Dogs at the ballpark?? Yes, I love when my four-legged friends come visit me! Dates for the 2023 season will be announced soon – check our website for updates and details.

3.

So Orion, I heard you were originally from outer space, a lost cosmic canine among the stars. What was it like living out there and do you like it better here in Houston? Houston, you do not have a problem! After traveling the universe for so long out in the cold depths of space all alone, I adore my new forever home here on Earth. Sugar Land and the rest of Houston has welcomed me with open arms and open hearts!

4.

Given that you are a dog, we know you understand the plight of dogs looking for a forever home and we appreciate you supporting them! Do you have any advice from a dog to a pet owner that you think would be helpful? Being from outer space, it has taken me some time to adjust and learn the Earth ways – just as dogs in a new environment need time to adjust. New things can sometimes be scary! Make sure you offer your new dog a lot of love and patience as they get comfortable in their new home.

5.

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s a dog eat dog world”, but we know you would never do that! As a kind dog and ambassador for the team, what things do you do to get the fans involved and to entertain them? You CAN teach this space pup new tricks, and I do my best to show them off every game for our fans. I love to be right in the middle of every photo or crazy moment at the ballpark. My favorite thing in the universe is to make our fans smile!

Orion enjoys cuddling with cute kitties for adoption at HHS.

JASMINE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME: She Has Been At Houston Humane Society since Sept. 2, 2021...please consider adopting her!

Jasmine is 2 years old and is a "super long-stay" at the shelter. Let's help her find a forever home! She is a Hurricane Ida survivor and was rescued from a shelter in Jefferson County in New Orleans after the shelter was flooded and suffered damage. She recently went on a Doggy Day Out and here's what her buddy had to say about her: "She is such a smart girl, she learned how to lay down in just a few minutes. She knows sit, down, and shake. She loves to play and then cuddle afterwards. She would be best for an active family who loves to play tug of war and fetch with her, and who wants a cuddle buddy for the couch." Orion and Orbit thought she was super cool and enjoyed cuddling with her! Learn more about Jasmine at https://rb.gy/oeilqw.

L ooking to add a pet to your family? Local animal shelters and rescue groups can be great places to search for a new cat, dog, bird, small animal—or even a horse or pig! Here is some valuable information from the Humane Society of the U.S.: 1. Breed-specific rescue groups have purebred dogs and puppies looking for new homes. 2. Many pets end up homeless through no fault of their own or of their previous family. Rather, a lack of affordable and pet-friendly housing tops the list of reasons pets are surrendered to shelters. 3. Pets adopted from shelters and rescue groups typically cost less than pets purchased or even acquired for free. Once you add in the cost of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, dewormer and other "extras" included in your adoption fee, you'll probably be surprised with the level of medical and behavioral care your new pet has received. 4. While some shelter pets may have some behavioral or medical challenges, your local organization can help you find the right fit for your lifestyle and family. 5. Shelters and rescue groups can provide advice on making your relationship with your pet the best it can be for the rest of your pet’s life, so you’ll never have to go it alone. GREAT DANE RESCUE OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS

GDRST has been a loyal sponsor of PetTalk for many years and we in turn are honored to promote their dogs up for adoption, like Jackson and Sady below, as well as their overall mission of education. If you are interested in adopting a Great Dane or would like to foster or volunteer, GDRST would love to have your assistance!

Their dedicated team consists of passion-

ate people with breed experience who rescue abandoned, sick, injured, and abused Great Danes from various Houston area shelters and owner surrenders.  They place all of their Gentle Giants into foster homes where the Gentle Giants begin their rehabilitation.  Each dog is temperament tested, completes a full medical evaluation including heartworm test, spay or neuter, and fecal.  Foster parents

begin to teach each foster dog basic manners and prepare them for a loving home.

GDRST is funded by donations, adoption fees, and fund-raising which go directly towards the care of their rescued Great Danes. They are a 501 c(3) non-profit organization who depends solely on monetary donations and volunteers who can offer their time. Find out more at SaveADane.org.

JACKSON

Jackson is about 9 years old and was an owner surrender.  He is a very sweet boy and has flourished under his amazing foster mom.  Jackson does have hip dysplasia and the normal aches and pains from a senior boy.  He is full of life and loves to run at the dog park, loves other dogs and walks over 2-3 miles a day.  He has increased his muscle mass in his legs and is just doing amazing. Jackson is on several supplements that he will need to take for the rest of his life.  This super fun guy who no longer shows his age needs to stay on this regiment as he looks amazing and feels great.  Who says seniors have to be confined to their beds?

SADY

Sady is about 7 years old and was dumped in a neighborhood after having a little of puppies.  From the looks of Sady, she was probably used for breeding and now that she can no longer breed she was no longer needed.  GDRST is working to get her back into good health.  Sady has several fatty tumors and over all body condition that needs improvement.  Her foster mom says Sady is super sweet, loves to give kisses, and seems very grateful for all the love and attention.  Sady will be spayed once she gains some weight.  She is a very pretty fawn girl that will make someone a wonderful companion.

BARC knows you love your pets and want to make sure if they are ever lost or stolen, they can always come back home.

Microchipping can make that happen. And it’s easy and inexpensive.

Take your pets to BARC’s low-cost wellness clinic or your vet, who will implant the microchip and explain how it works and how to register your information on HoustonBARC.com. That way, an animal welfare organization that finds your pets can scan their microchips and arrange for their safe return.

Remember. Microchip by February 1 to avoid possible fines. And, if ever your pets roam, they can find their Way Home.

PLEASE microchip your pets. So, if ever they roam, they can find their Way Home.

February Is Pet Dental Month

A Healthy Mouth Is A Healthy Body!

Because dental health can sometimes be overlooked by pet parents, AVMA sponsors National Pet Dental Health Month every February to highlight the importance of oral health for a healthy body. During the month of LOVE, it’s a great time to show a pet your love by getting their teeth professionally cleaned, along with an overall oral checkup.

At Veterinary Dentistry Specialists, our motto is: A healthy mouth is a healthy body. Maintaining oral health has been demonstrated to improve your pet’s overall comfort and well-being. This includes regular dental homecare and anesthetized dental cleanings with your primary care veterinarian and, if necessary, a boardcertified veterinary dentist and anesthesiologist for advanced care.

Periodontal disease is one of the most diagnosed conditions in cats and dogs, and its management is essential for maintaining quality oral health. In brief, periodontal disease is an infection in the mouth that destroys the tissues surrounding the teeth. This may lead to bad breath, gingival recession, loss of the bone surrounding the teeth, and, if severe enough, tooth loss—all of which can result in oral pain.

Periodontal disease not only affects your pet’s oral health and comfort but can also negatively affect other organs in the body, worsening the general health of your pet. This occurs when bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream through tiny microcracks in the gums and travel to important organs such as the kidneys, liver, and heart. These organs are then susceptible to infection as well. If your pet already has an illness affecting these or-

gans, periodontal disease can exacerbate these conditions. Regular tooth brushing and anesthetized dental cleanings will prevent periodontal disease and give your pet comfort and longevity.

The idea of putting a beloved pet under anesthesia can be worrisome for pet owners; however, it is necessary when performing a proper cleaning. General anesthesia allows for a thorough cleaning above and below the gumline, oral examination, and dental X-rays. If further treatment is necessary, such as a tooth extraction, it can be performed at that moment while the patient is already anesthetized. Anesthesia carries minimal risk when administered safely by properly trained staff with monitoring equipment and medications.

There may be a time when your primary care veterinarian deems your pet a high anesthetic risk and/or in need of ad-

vanced oral care. Take comfort in knowing that most pets can be provided general anesthesia safely and successfully, even if the pet has concurrent health or age-related concerns – if delivered by an expert. In these situations, your veterinarian may refer your pet to a team of specialists such as Veterinary Dentistry Specialists. At VDS, we offer you and your pet an exceptional team that includes a board-certified veterinary dentist, a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, an experienced team of skilled technicians, and compassionate client service representatives.

So, ask your veterinarian about your pet’s dental health care needs today. And know that, at VDS, your pet will receive outstanding care for their advanced dental and anesthesia needs.

around the well-being of our furry friends first. Taking extra time to ensure a pet is comfortable, clean, and happy is our biggest priority. Our more personal spa experience approach along with open communication with the pet parents helps build better relationships with our clients and their animals. To help the pet parent pamper their babies many locations offer pick up and drop off services, through our pet taxi service.

With so many people realizing the joy and benefits of pet ownership throughout the pandemic lock down periods of 2020, pets have become a more integral part of many families. At petbar we understand that these animals are extensions of people’s families and in many cases are treated as children by their owners. It is through this un-

derstanding that we take the extra time to make the pets comfortable so that the apprehension of being separated from their human parents is reduced as much as possible. The response to this new concept of pet grooming has been phenomenal, as so many pet parents have been looking for that next level of pet care for their furry family members that petbar offers.

Moreover, we strive to support and give back to the community. By partnering with local animal shelters and rescues through donations and event sponsorships. We are excited for the opportunity to take care of your fur babies grooming needs. To learn more, including information about our memberships, or to find a location near you, visit petbar.com.

How To Photograph Your Love

Demonstrated by Salty and Sweet Sara

One of my favorite hobbies is taking photos of my four-footed family members and capturing memories with them at different holidays and stages of their lives. You do not need an expensive, fancy camera to start taking photos of yours. In fact, most of my pictures are taken on my IPhone and edited with apps to enhance color, alter the light and add fun with filters. I find what comes in handy, most, is your unique communication with your dog. Using important key phrases they recognize like, “Wanna play?” or using a “kissy” noise or squeaky toy to catch them looking at you will orient them to the camera or lure. Brushing up on basic skills can also be useful if you are expecting them to hold a posture like SIT, STAY or BEG in your photo. I hope

these suggestions will help you create your own memories and will bring a smile to your heart for years to come.

1. PRACTICE WITH PROPS

Familiarize your pet with any costumes or objects they need to wear or have nearby. Take a tasty treat to lure their head through garments, go slowly, and keep the treats coming! Use small, chewy treats rather than things that crumble so they can swallow easily and avoid dropping bits on the floor that will distract them later.

2. USE BODY CUES & KEY PHRASES

Step into your dog and use your hand like a stop sign and pause to initiate “STAY” behavior from your dog. Use consistent cues and return to them to reward often so they hold their posture. Having a helper

is key so your photographer can focus on getting the shot while you get your pup in position.

3. FOCUS FORWARD

Use a wooden dowel from the craft store with peanut butter or spray cheese on the tip to get your dog to focus on the lure. If your pet will hold their behavior, you can use a toy that makes noise to grab their attention. Eyes bright and ears forward make for a great shot!

4. GROW DISTANCE & FADE YOUR LURE

Practice initiating your posture and rewarding, take a step away then return to your pet and reward. Repeat this until you can back out of the shot. Make sure to release your dog when you are finished – short sessions are best!

Weight Loss, Lethargy In Cats

Could It Be Pancreatitis?

Have you ever had a finicky cat that lost weight and became lethargic, yet no cause could be found? One possibility is that your cat was suffering from pancreatitis. This inflammation can be very serious.

Pancreatitis happens when digestive enzymes begin to auto-digest the pancreas instead of food. Once thought to be rare in cats, it is now recognized more frequently due to improvements in tests. There is no effective way to prevent it since 95% of the time, the cause is unknown.

The diagnosis of pancreatitis can be very challenging. A vet will rely upon the cat’s clinical signs, multiple blood tests, and imaging results, including abdominal ultrasound.

The most specific blood test is known

as “feline pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity”, or fPLI but no one test is 100% accurate. X-rays do not generally show specific changes although they may be recommended to rule out other common causes of decreased appetite and vomiting. However, ultrasound examination can identify changes to the pancreas in up two-thirds of cats. A biopsy is not generally recommended. In general, it is likely that a fairly accurate diagnosis can be made with a combination of clinical signs and diagnostic tests.

Treatment mainly consists of managing the clinical signs. Hydration and fluid support are critical because dehydration is a very common finding and fluid loss can be severe enough to affect blood pressure. In these cases, cats will require intravenous fluid therapy in the hospital. In less severe cases, fluids can be given under the skin.

has also been shown to help decrease abdominal pain in animals. If additional pain medication is needed, opioid medications may be prescribed

Early nutritional support is key in the treatment of feline pancreatitis. Studies have shown that the earlier a cat gets back to eating, the better the prognosis. Proper nutritional therapy not only helps cats recover more quickly, but prevents other complications of prolonged anorexia such as hepatic lipidosis, aka “fatty liver”.

The prognosis for cats can vary as widely as the clinical severity of the disease. For cats with mild to moderate forms of the disease, the prognosis for recovery is generally very good, though repeated episodes are possible. Pancreatitis can, however, be fatal in cats with very severe forms of acute pancreatitis.

byline

Also, anti-nausea medications are recommended, even in cases where vomiting is not seen. One of the most common antinausea medications, maropitant (Cerenia),

If your cat has stopped eating for any reason, a prompt visit to your veterinarian is warranted. The key to successful treatment is to maintain a high index of suspicion and to seek early treatment.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction

Alzheimer's For Dogs

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) is a disease that is comparable to Alzheimer’s Disease in people. Your veterinarian may also refer to this as dementia. It is hard to know how many dogs are affected because it is largely overlooked. There is an increased risk of this disease in patients older than 8 years of age, however any breed or gender can be affected. There is no test for CCD. It is diagnosed by ruling out other diseases and questioning the dog’s caretakers for signs and symptoms.

Listed below are symptoms that can be seen with this disease:

» Disorientation in the environment: spatial confusion, going to the wrong side of the door, getting stuck in corners, becoming lost within a well-known space or vocalization

» May also be caused by: vision or hearing loss

» Interactions altered with humans: failure to greet, avoidance, hiding or aggression

» May also be caused by: pain or discomfort

» Sleep-wake cycle disturbances: increased sleep during the day, night pacing, restlessness, impulsive actions, panting, paranoia, or vocalizations

» May also be caused by: diseases of the endocrine system or pain

» House soiling: soiling in new or unusual locations, well-trained dogs now having accidents

byline

» May also be caused by: urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection, primary kidney disease, behavioral elimination, or other neurologic disease

» Activity, appetite, and anxiety alterations: decreased social interaction with people and/or animals, decreased play, visible anxiety, changed interest in food

(either eating more or less)

» May also be caused by: age-related changes, pain, endocrine disease, or heart disease

Canine cognitive dysfunction is a disease that is progressive and irreversible. Although we cannot stop the process, we can attempt to slow the progression and make your pet more comfortable during this time. If you feel your pet is suffering from these symptoms please reach out to your veterinarian or us at Blue Pearl Pet Hospice for a consultation to see if we can help make your pet feel better.

Conservation Corner

Looking Ahead to 2023

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight a look at 2023. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

As 2022 has come to a close, the Houston Zoo has a lot to forward to in 2023. This year the Houston Zoo will be home to the University of Houston’s live mascot, once again. The two new cougar cubs are rescues and have been named Shasta VII and Louie. Shasta and Louie will carry the long-standing tradition in partnership with the University of Houston Alumni Association and be ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild. They will faithfully represent the cougar spirit of the University of Houston from their home at the Houston Zoo. The Zoo plans to share the cougars’ growth and progress with the community and welcomes visitors to come to the Zoo to meet the Shasta VII and Louie.

The cubs came to the Houston Zoo not long after saying goodbye to former cougars Shasta VI and Haley, the Zoo’s two elderly

felines who passed away to age-related health conditions. The Zoo sent out the word of the available space and expertise to care for cougars and it didn’t take long for Washington State Fish & Wildlife to contact the Zoo. A rancher found two orphaned male cubs on his property in Washington. At an estimated four weeks-old it was unlikely the cubs would survive on their own. The Zoo looks forward to providing the cougars with world-class veterinary care and is excited for the community to watch them grow up in their new home.

In April 2023, the Houston Zoo will open the long-awaited Galápagos Islands exhibit, the first major exhibit of its kind to showcase the remarkable wildlife of the legendary island chain. The new exhibit will immerse guests in an environment evoking the archipelago’s unique landscapes and oceanic habitats and

highlight how to protect it for the future. The community will learn all about the delicate balance of ecosystems and the pressing need for conservation action.

The state-of the-art exhibit will be home to California sea lions, giant tortoises, sharks and many more animals. For the first time ever, Humbolt penguins will call Houston Zoo home. Humbolt penguins are a great fit for Houston since they originate from Chile and Peru in South American where it can get as warm as 100 degrees. However, they will not have to battle the Houston heat since they will have a climate-controlled environment where they will be comfortable at a consistent temperature. The penguin exhibit was given with love, in memory is Isabel James Davis and her grandfather James Anderson Elkins III, who lived their lives with so much joy.

The opening of the Galápagos Islands in 2023 will close out the Houston Zoo’s centennial celebration and the six-year, multi-phase Keeping Our World Wild Centennial Capital Campaign. Reaching this milestone could not have been possible without the help of the Zoo’s generous donors, members, and the community. The Zoo looks forward to continuing to be a place for Houstonians to explore, learn and make memories.

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS

MEET BLOSSOM THE OPOSSUM

Wildlife is an essential element of our planet and having the opportunity to highlight various species and their unique abilities and contributions to the environment is one of my primary goals. Over the last several years, I have written a monthly column about wildlife, often about animals at the Houston Zoo, with the intent of educating the public and increasing awareness of not only an animals necessary place in the ecosystem, but also their plight. Their circumstances may be one of endangerment or may simply just be misunderstood, but either way, it’s my life’s goal to help people understand how they can contribute and help make the world a better place through the understanding of our relationship with animals.

For this month's column, I had the honor of meeting Blossom the opossum, an ambassador for the Houston Humane Society TWRC Wildlife Center. You may have read in our last issue that Houston Humane Society and Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition (TWRC) joined forces for good and are now working together for the betterment of all wildlife. Blossom is one of many TWRC ambassadors, including Woody the Wood Duck featured in our December issue, as well as a Texas Tortoise, an Eastern Screech Owl, native Texas snakes and more.

According to Samantha Norris, Education Manager at TWRC (pictured here), the ambassadors play an important role. She notes, “With the help of our animal ambassadors, our team shares the benefits of coexisting with our wild neighbors, their roles in the urban ecosystem, and how to help wildlife in need. Our programs are specially-tailored to the age of the audience

and are great for classrooms, scout groups, club meetings, and more!”

Blossom was the perfect model during our photo session, happy to munch on treats and pose for photos. I was given permission to gently touch her back and feel her soft fur and witness up close her amazing nails and touch her tail (which kind of felt like a parsnip LOL!). Blossom is a Virginia opossum, the only North American marsupial. A marsupial is a mammal that has a pouch where it carries its young.  Opossums eat almost anything, including fruit, insects, earthworms, eggs, nestlings, birds, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, and carrion. They commonly prey on snakes, including venomous species.

One characteristic we associate with the opossum is if they are caught on the ground and not able to escape, an opossum may become catatonic. Most body functions remain normal, but the animal appears to be unconscious or dead. This behavior has given rise to the expression “playing opossum".

You may be wondering what’s so great about an opossum? They actually help keep our backyards and homes clean and free of pests by clearing unwanted pests like cockroaches, rats, and mice. People tend to think opossums are unclean and disease ridden but it is actually just the opposite!

So next time you encounter an opossum, give them a thumbs up (don’t touch) for being such great environmental cleaners!

To learn more about TWRC, visit them online at TWRCwildlifeCenter.org.

Why I Love Animals is a monthly feature written by our Editor with the mission of educating the public on the value of all species.
