I find it is necessary to share this with you, we need to think and to take a step back "Is This The World We Created?" Queen Just think of all those hungry mouths we have to feed Take a look at all the suffering we breed So many lonely faces scattered all around Searching for what they need. Is this the world we created What did we do it for Is this the world we invaded Against the law So it seems in the end Is this what we're all living for today The world that we created. You know that everyday a helpless child is born Who needs some loving care inside a happy home Somewhere a wealthy man is sitting on his throne Waiting for life to go by. Is this the world we created, we made it on our own Is this the world we devasted, right to the bone If there's a God in the sky looking down What can he think of what we've done To the world that He created. Rio Welcomes 2014 with Thousands watching one of the Greatest Firework exhibition in the world. • The spectacle of fireworks was synchronized to a special soundtrack for the first and last 16 minutes of the new year. The burning was accompanied by a lighting show, at which point the lights were dancing in the sky, alternately using contrasts to be complementary to the colors of the fireworks and music. Sustainable actions, such as carbon offsets and recycling Canvases, were applied throughout the process of assembly and disassembly of the event.

Resolve to go organic in 2014 The Organic Center's 10 New Year's Resolutions to last a lifetime What is a New Year's Resolution you can make today that can last a lifetime-and beyond? Going organic--which is good for you, your family and the planet. For 2014, The Organic Center, the trusted source of information for scientific research about organic food and farming, offers 10 everyday, research-backed organic resolutions individuals can follow:

than conventional milk, yielding a 2.5-fold higher omega-6:omega-3 ratio in conventional compared to organic milk.

One: Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and make sure they're organic. This New Year's resolution is multi-faceted, dealing with the health benefits of eating more produce while avoiding exposure to pesticides. Eating fruit and vegetables is generally healthy for you, and a study published in 2013 in the American Journal of Epidemiology shows that it can reduce the risk of death! Specifically, the study showed that daily consumption of fruit and vegetables can decrease risks of mortality by 10 percent, and delay mortality by 1.12 years.

fruit, make sure they're organic! This year it's especially important to reach for organic produce. This is because in 2013, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) raised the permitted tolerance levels of glyphosate residue in many fruits and vegetables. This is especially worrisome, because 2013 also saw several studies documenting troubling health associations with glyphosate exposure, such as estrogenic activity that could induce breast cancer cell growth, gut bacteria changes, and many other modern diseases.

Two: Balance your omega- 3 and omega-6 fatty acid intake. Balancing your omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid intake is important because omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies can have negative health consequences, including inflammation, higher risk of heart disease, weight gain, depression, and diabetes. Healthy omega-6:omega-3 ratios are low, around 2.3:1, but unhealthy diet trends have increased that ratio to between 10 and 15:1.

Three: Save the soil. The soil is a part of our Earth that does not get a lot of attention, yet is a critical component of the health of our agriculture and natural ecosystems. Eating organic can help improve soil quality by building organic matter and supporting the soil micro biome. This has been supported by several studies to come out in 2013.

Researchers also found that for every 200 gram increase of produce consumed, risk of death goes down by 6 percent. Interestingly, there was a stronger correlation between longevity and eating fresh fruit and vegetables than for cooked produce. When you're choosing your vegetables and

One of the most ground-breaking studies of 2013 showed that drinking organic milk plays an important role in balancing unhealthy omega fatty acid ratios. Specifically, researchers found that organic milk contained 25 percent less omega-6 fatty acids and 62 percent more omega-3 fatty acids

The study also took a look at how adult women could alter their diet to increase their consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers found that by consuming high levels of organic milk with reduced intake of omega-6 fatty acids in their diet, women could decrease their omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid profile by around 80 percent.

For example, a study published in Crop Management showed that long-term organic management resulted in 40 percent more biologically active soil organic matter as well as lower acidity and higher amounts of carbon, nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous and calcium when compared to conventionally managed soil.

Four: Focus on future generations.

New research in 2013 has shown that it is possible for your descendants to be affected by the chemicals that their ancestors were exposed to, even if the future generations were never directly exposed to the pollutants themselves. This concept of disease inheritance is one of the most interesting (and f r i g ht e n i n g ) new phenomena to be discovered in the past few However, it's probably a good idea to years. avoid toxic pesticides so that we don't inadvertently pass on environmental An example of this was described in a diseases to our children and grandchilstudy published in 2013 that showed dren! DDT exposure could increase rates of Five: Listen to the frogs. obesity several generations down the Studies published in 2013 suggest that line. Researchers in the study exposed the use of synthetic pesticides may be

contributing to the decline in amphibian populations. Amphibian populations have seen a dramatic decline in the past decade. Many scientists are worried that several species of frogs could go extinct in the next few years if we don't change our agricultural practices. Even frogs living in remote areas are exposed to toxic pesticides, according to a 2013 study published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Unfortunately, pesticide exposure can result in increased amphibian mortality, and even low-dose exposure can result in endocrine disruption. These effects were modeled by a 2013 article published in Scientific Reports. When the researchers modeled agricultural spray scenarios using the recommended application rates for the pesticides, they found that frogs experienced high mortality, ranging from 100 percent after one hour to 40 percent after seven days.

Concluding that pesticides may have a large-scale negative effect on amphibian health, they stated, “Terrestrial pesticide exposure might be underestimated as a driver of their decline.” The researchers called for more attention to this issue in conservation efforts, and pointed out that risk assessment procedures in place do not protect this vanishing animal group. Six: Avoid antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In 2013, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a report detailing the threats of antibiotic-resistant diseases on the public.

and antibiotic resistance has been linked to this use of antibiotics in conventional animal rearing. Many people are infected with antibiotic strains of bacteria each year, which can be especially dangerous to children. Studies have also found that because organic management does not use antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria are less prevalent in organically produced milk, eggs, and meat than conventionally produced products. Several studies this year have supported the claim that conventional livestock operations are more risky when it comes to antibiotic resistance. For example, one study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found antibiotic-resistant bacteria associated with industrial livestock workers, but not antibiotic-free livestock workers.

ty members have been concerned by this because, without bees, many important crops would disappear, such as apples, almonds, blueberries, cherries, avocados, and oranges. Some of the awareness campaigns addressing honey bee loss have been especially poignant, such as the pictures of a Whole Foods Market in Rhode Island that pulled all bee-dependent fruit and vegetables off its shelves for a day, revealing a near-empty produce department.

One of the most recent studies examining honey bee population declines showed that a combination of insecticides and fungicides can have a negative impact on bees’ immune systems, resulting in decreased ability to resist infection by the parasite Nosema ceranae implicated in colony collapse disorder. Researchers found that the pollen bees collect to feed to their larvae contained an average of nine The U.S. Food and Drug Adminis- different pesticide contaminants, and tration has responded to these con- made bees three times as likely to be cerns by announcing its commit- infected by the parasites. ment to phasing out the agricultural use of antibiotics, but currently one of the only ways to ensure your animal products are antibiotic free is by choosing organic!

Another study, published in the journal PNAS, showed that intensive land use can reduce the biodiversity of soil organisms and can have a negative impact on nitrogen and carbon cycling. Finally, researchers at Kansas State University published a study showing that the use of conventional fertilizers can decrease soil macro aggregate stability, which is a key indicator of soil structural quality because it affects how resistant soil is to erosion and how well water is able to move through the soil. • One of the factors contributing to antibiotic resistance is the broad application of low doses of antibiotics Seven: Bee friendly. in rearing animals. Unfortunately, 2013 saw a continued About 80 percent of all antibiotics trend of bee population decline. Many sold are used in livestock facilities, gardeners, farmers, and communi-

Eight: Shrink the dead zone. Dead zones are low-oxygen zones in the ocean caused primarily by nutrient pollution from synthetic fertilizers. Oxygen levels in these areas are so low that most aquatic life cannot survive, creating an area devoid of life. They affect large areas of the

cess nitrogen is impacting the Mississippi River and worsening the Gulf of Mexico’s Dead Zone. These scientists found record levels of nitrogen in the watershed, driven by a combination of drought from 2012 and high rainfalls from the spring of 2013. Nitrogen is making its way into the waterways from synthetic fertilizer spread on conventional farms, polluting local aquatic areas and eventually contributing to the Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Measures of the 2013 Dead Zone found that it had doubled in size from 2012, likely due to nitrogen and phosphorus pollution run-off from agricultural sources.

One way to reduce the amount of nitrogen polluting our waterways is by choosing organic. The Organic Center is currently conducting a project quantifying the amount that organic production decreases nitrogen ocean, especially in the Gulf of Mex- pollution. For example, a study from

Germany showed that organic farming not only produces less greenhouse gases, but also uses less energy than conventional farming techniques. The benefit of organic is especially apparent in dairy farming, as the organic farms in the study emitted around 200 grams less CO2 per kilogram of milk than conventional farms with the same milk yield. Another study, by Professor Dalgaard of Aarhus University, showed that conversion to organic from conventional farming typically results in lower total fossil energy use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, a 2013 research study by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) showed that organically managed soils release 492 kg less carbon dioxide per hectare per year than conventionally managed soils. Researchers also found that the uptake of methane on organic farms was higher than on conventional farms. Agriculture is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, so choosing organic could mitigate the future threat of climate change!

Ten: Go bird watching. Organic agriculture is better for birds, according to a 2013 study from France. This is not a new idea, and many papers have cited examples of the benefits that organic farming plays on bird species. However, the 2013 study is the first complete synthesis of available research examining the relationship between farming practices and bird population health.

ly practices used by organic techniques--such as diverse crop rotations, reduced use of pesticides, and the creation of more heterogeneous landscapes--as being responsible for these benefits. The Organic Center’s mission is to convene credible, evidence-based science on the health and environmental benefits of organic food and farming and to communicate the findings to the public. As an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) research and education organization operating under the administrative auspices of the Organic Trade Association, The Center envisions improved health for the earth and its inhabitants through the conversion of agriculture to organic methods.

The researchers focused on birds in Europe and North America to test whether organic agriculture is more favorable to farmland birds compared to conventional agriculture, and found that organic farming techniques benefit birds on a large scale. Researchers found that organic agriculture had a global positive effect on bird abundance compared to conventional agriculture with ten out of the 36 species they examined showing a significantly higher abundance on SOURCE organic farms than on conventional The Organic Trade Association farms. The study cited “bird-friend-

We invite you for a reflection on the identity in the current Brazilian fashion, especially in cultural manifestations of our people and the richness of our handicrafts, such as embroidery and crochet. With cuts, prints and unique embroidery, Vanuza Barbara has always imprinted her pieces, plus a combination of colors and shapes marking their identity and the region they live. This time she will not be alone : to foster the setting of regional fashion, the designer joined the Group of Women Embroiderers Making Art Ipatinga, a cooperative of women who see embroidery as a new way of life .

The Zen Art of Larissa Namaste My first story of 2014 is a young artist from Cascavel Parana, her name Lari Namaste stage name Larissa Trento . Namaste in Sanskrit, is a greeting much used in India and Nepal by Hindus, Sikhs , Jains and Buddhists. It is accompanied by a gesture made with hands clasped across the chest, fingers up. Literally means " I bow before thee", with reference to the respect among the Gods who dwell within us . Larissa Trento, Paranรก artist in visual arts, already drawing on the walls of the house as a child with crayons, began her career in 1999 (the year

she attended classes in painting and drawing with Artist Brandaly Tomasetto ). Always observant of the arts, lived in Italy for 11 months between August 2004 and July 2005, visited the numerous and splendid Arts Museums of Europe and studied Art History throughout the period, in the Province of Turin. Her Atelier is at her own home where she creates and devotes her passion for oil on canvas, drawings and mandalas .

Keeping art at home does’t make sense, you must give the return to society. Teaching the world colors and emotions is the way that leads the Namaste House. Without color, the world has no love.

" Appreciate art promotes enlightenment of the soul ." Lari tells me a bit about your daily life and your work.

I lead a Zen life, an apartment in which electronics, by choice, are not very well received ( haven’t watch TV for 7 years, and do not have a microwave). I have a water fountain and incense, dream filters and three cats to harmonize the environment, I am also a vege-

Initially I would like to introduce myself, I want to show the honor and gratitude to be debuting my column about soccer in essence for such a prestigious magazine and such a select audience. My name is Igor Moura, the sports reporter at News System Journal of Commerce & Communication, located in Recife, and arguably the greatest communication system in the North / Northeast of Brazil. My passion for the sport came from the crib with a professional athlete father, and today I work with what I love and I'll be happy from now on to share it with all readers, opinions about the most popular sport in the world . Soccer. To start, nothing better than to draw a parallel between the Brazilian soccer and Soccer in the United States, which in my opinion, is among the three countries in the world where the practice evolves with more notoriety. The numbers prove this thesis. Growth in average attendance at MLS games, or Major League Soccer is huge, reaching more than 20,000 people per game, average even higher than the Brazilian Championship. Of course, the technical discrepancy between Brazilian and American clubs is still great, but the organization and aspiration to higher flights of US Soccer is what makes the difference making a parameter with the CBF, the Brazilian Football Confederation. The highest entity in Brazilian Soccer-CBF is extremelly disorganized, with stagnation due to the success of the Brazilian team throughout history and the changes of results on the pitch in the courts that happened at the end of 2013, the legal battle between Fluminense and Portuguesa, in which Fluminense got away from demotion due to the fact that Portuguesa assigned an irregular athlete, and at the end, winning the Brasileirão championship in a regretful way. Unlikely, the exciting MLS US Season in which Sporting KC deservedly won the title in a frantic final against Real Salt Lake. Two surprises that showed everyone how the tournament is balanced, since the LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC

of Canada usually invest more in their casts and still fell by the wayside. Just now the American teams must front against Mexican rival in ConcaChampions, with such an exaggerated hegemony of Latinos, who, despite having really good times, do not usually perform a good role in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Brazil has no mystery. A Selection of medians and maximum good for clashes against Brazil to face Brazil. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was able to draw the most of every athlete, implement a system of effective and psychologically swinging game from each player, something his predecessor Mano Menezes failed to do. Result:undisputed title in the Confederations Cup and beautiful presentations in pre - Cup friendlies. His rivals surely will put a fight for the vacancy in 2nd place in the group. Croatia with some good values a s Mandzukic and Modric on an average team, speedy team Mexico still unsure whether or not they will have their talents playing in Europe, highlighting Chicharito Hernández and Andrés Guardado and Cameroon betting on phsical strength and two athletes of above average quality : Song, of Barcelona and Eto from the Chelsea .

Another point on which I favor is the inclusion of at least one MLS team in the Libertadores Cup, the most important competition of the whole American continent. And there's this fab about a long journey from Brazil to the U.S., or vice versa, meanwhile, the path São Paulo / Mexico City lasts almost the same as one to Florida, for example. Besides it would be a great experience for Americans facing teams of higher quality, as the Brazilians, Argentineans, Colombians and Uruguaians, instead of teams of El Salvador, Guatemala and Jamaica.
