Famosa pelos movimentos culturais da capital paulista, o bairro da Vila Madalena, a exemplo de anos anteriores, fervilhou até altas horas do ultimo dia 18 de fevereiro com o vernissage da tão aguardada Mostra comemorativa do aniversário da Semana de Arte Moderna, também chamada de Semana de 22, marco inicial do movimento modernista no Brasil e que tornou-se referência cultural do século XX. O local, como já se tornou uma tradição, foi a charmosa Galeria PontoArt, na qual, seus proprietários e idealizadores, Lucilia Giordano e Marrey Jr, pelo 4° ano consecutivo, receberam inúmeros convidados junto aos 30 artistas de renome selecionados para exporem suas obras, inspiradas num dos momentos mais emblemáticos da nossa cultura, que ocorreu entre os dias 11 e 18 de fevereiro de 1922, no Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. Onde, a cada dia eram apresentadas novas ideias e conceitos artísticos como a poesia através da declamação, que antes era só escrita; a música por meio de concertos, que antes só havia

Modern Art Famous for its cultural movements in the capital city, the neighborhood of Vila Madalena, as in previous years, swarmed into the early hours of last February 18 with the vernissage and long-awaited show, commemorating the anniversary of the Week of Modern Art, also named Week of 22, starting point of the modernist movement in Brasil, which became a cultural reference of the twentieth century. The charming gallery PontoArt, owners and creators, Lucilia Giordano and Marrey Jr, hosted the event for the 4th consecutive year, receiving numerous guests, starting with the 30 featured artists selected to present their works inspired by one of the most iconic moments of our culture, which took place between 11 and 18 of February 1922, at the Theatro Municipal. Every day, new ideas were presented alomg with artistic concepts like: poetry through recitation, which was previously only writ-

played in canvas, sculptures and architectural models, with bold, modern designs. A party that lasted until the wee hours, without forgetting to register a beautiful natural detail which did not go unnoticed by all savvy artists and guests and has become a poetic image exposure in the skies of SĂŁo Paulo, or the rare appearance of a special Moon, with all its splendor and romance right in the first quarter! Besides the exhibition which runs until March 05, it is scheduled a literary event on February 27-Saturday with reading contemporary poetry by invited artists.

BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT UNDER PROTEST BRASILIA (Reuters) Dozens of lawmakers opposed to Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff chanted "resign" at a Congressional session late on Wednesday, in a sign of rising political tensions in Latin America's largest economy. Between half and two-thirds of the world's land is held by indigenous people and communities under informal or customary ownership s ystems, often not legally recognized by governments, said the report by Oxfam, the International Land Coalition and the Rights and Resources Initiative. Communities without formal title to lands where they may have lived for generations can be displaced by large-scale resource extraction projects, said the report. "People who don't have formal ownership are in a situation of vulnerability," said Gonzalo Oviedo, senior advisor to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, one of several groups lobbying governments to double the amount of property formally owned by indigenous people by 2020. "They can't get a loan, can't develop the land and can't get legal or technical support

Expanding land rights can improve food production, reduce conflicts and promote environmental sustainability, as local residents have more incentive to protect land they formally own, the report said. Globally, an estimated 2.5 billion people lack formal title to the lands where they live, the report said. To determine how much land is held by indigenous people and communities, researchers of "Common Ground: Securing Land Rights and Safeguarding the Earth" went country-by-country calculating how much property was privately owned, held by the state or classified as protected areas. Honoring Those Who Served: African-American Civil War Memorial Black soldiers and sailors fought shoulder-to-shoulder with white soldiers for the Union during the Civil War, making up to 10% of the entire military force. Despite being brothers-in-arms, discrimination still occurred. Black soldiers faced lower wages and duty restrictions that resulted in a higher mortality rate than their non-Black counterparts.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH A Bold Force in Our History: Mary McLeod Bethune Council House Mary McLeod Bethune, a daughter of former slaves, was ready to harness the power of Black women when started the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in her living room in 1935. McLeod Bethune was already a tenured educator for young Black people. Eight years later, she purchased a

three-story house, dedicating the first two floors as the NCNW's headquarters while living on the third. The following year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed McLeod Bethune as the director of the National Youth Administration's Division of Negro Affairs. This historical appointment made her the first Black woman to head a federal agency. She continued on to lead his administration's "Black Cabinet" and became involved in international diplomacy, attending the first conference of the United Nations in 1945. D.C.'s Transformation: The Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum D.C.'s historic Anacostia neighborhood is home to the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, dedicated to documenting and displaying the history of our nation's capital. Its latest exhibition Twelve Years that Shook and Shaped Washington: 19631975 examines the racial, political, and urban development of this important time in D.C. and American history. Social activists mobilized to confront longstanding injustices of poverty, race, gender, and D.C. home ruleâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and Black leaders like Walter E. Washington, Marion Barry, and Mary Treadwell were on the forefront of these efforts. In the Shadows of Giants: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial "One of my favorite things about this memorial is that even when it is full of people, there is a sense of peace," one of the National Parks Service guards explained during Bunn's visit.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was dedicated on Aug. 29, 2011, and commemorated the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It's the same march where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech that quickly became iconic of the rights movement. The memorial is the only one dedicated to a person of color on on the National Mall. The Struggle Today: The U.S. Supreme Court Despite progress, we still have a long way to go to reach equality and equity for every American. Some of the rights won in battles are threatened once again. There are forces in our political system, including the potential Supreme Court case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, that attack the ability for workers to unite together. "Organized labor has historically been the door through which African-Americans entered middle class status. States with Right to Work laws have been shown to have lower wages, lower rates of health coverage, higher poverty and infant mortality rates, less investment in education and higher workplace fatalities," recently reported the Detroit Free Press. "The Supreme Court is still in position to oppress Black people," noted Bunn on the steps of the highest court in the land.

Looking Toward the Future: Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture Black history in the United States continues to be revealed and made. The Smithsonian Institution's newest museumâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;opening Sept. 24, 2016â&#x20AC;&#x201D;will give that history the focus it deserves. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture will soon be one of the next hallowed grounds for African American memories. "We are prepared to offer exhibitions and programs to unite and capture the attention of millions of people worldwide. It will be a place for healing and reconciliation, a place where everyone can explore the story of America through the lens of the African American experience," said Lonnie Bunch, the museum's founding director, in a statement this month. As we look to the future, the keynote speaker at the 2016 Black History Luncheon remarked that there are three tools we need to accomplish even more: commitment, courage, and faith.
