“A democratic civilization will save itself only if it makes the language of the image into a stimulus for critical reflection — not an invitation for hypnosis.” By Umberto Eco, The Screen Education Reader: Cinema, Television, Culture

From My Desk... CONTRIBUTORS January 2016 comes to an end, faster than we Anticipated and brought to light a few alarming news. In Brazil, the governmental corruption investigation keeps digging deeper, and if it wasn’t enough the Zika virus is taking the world by storm. Economical anguish, poverty, violence, racism, discrimination, sickness and war pushes humanity into doom every day, showing us what our collection of main values is taking us. We hand by a thread, we need to change our values, our believes and begin to look further, to make life better.

Our CEO Brazilian, great photographer and with a mind set to detail. The ground person.

This month we changed things around a bit. The magazine is smaller in size, but not in content. We are trying to make the digital experience better. I found reading the articles in the magazine an experience less than desired. To make it better, we now placed many of our own articles in our site, where you can reach through the link in our magazine page. This will enhance the visual and the comfort .

LUTHERO RIOS:

A Passion for Painting By Tacy Callies Perhaps the best two words to describe Luthero Rios are “Renaissance man.” Engineer, horticulturist, marketer, researcher, author and basketball player are some of the diverse roles his talents have led him to play throughout his 77 years, but the role he prefers to focus on today is artist. Rios was born in 1938 in São João Del Rei, Minas Gerais in Brazil. His earliest memory of creating art was drawing roses that he saw in a plant catalog when he was in high school. “Art was something that I appreciated all my life,” says Rios. “I started to have fun at the photography lab during my high school years. In college, I paid for my studies working as a photographer, so I guess that was my first ‘professional’ form of art.” However, it wasn’t until many years later that he would fully pursue his artistic interests and talents. Rios graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and then earned a master’s degree in horticulture at the Viçosa Federal University in Brazil. He later added a marketing specialization and research administration to his resume. Rios worked in the field of agricultural research for most of his career in Minas Gerais. Later, he served as an agricultural consultant to large companies and had many research papers published.

About the Artist Awards:

Honorable mention in modern and academic categories at the International Painting Competition, The National Academy of Fine Arts, Brazil, 2002 and 2003; international honorable mention at the VIII Brazilian Art International Exhibit, London, Madrid, Lisbon and Vienna, 2003

Most important tool:

Luthero Rios says “Laginha Farm, Brazil” is his favorite painting he has done because it reminds him of his childhood.

“My mind. Without my thoughts and experiences, I wouldn’t be able to paint and express myself.”

Pursuing a Dream

Best part of being an artist:

“When my retirement age was approaching, I decided to dedicate my time to an activity that I had always looked forward to, that I could do in my retirement years,” recalls Rios.

“I’m a very private person, so when I’m with my brushes and paint, I forget about the world and everything around me (including my wife) and just have fun and relax.”

The meaning of art:

“Art is a form of expressing my feelings, emotions, dreams, and experiences. It’s a way to connect with other people.”

Family:

Married to Shirley Alvarenga for 51 years with two children, Eddy Alvarenga and Lutecia Lopes. “The joy of my life are my three granddaughters: Alyssa, Zoe and Leilani. They are the reason I moved to the United States.”

Hobbies:

“As a young man I was a basketball player, so now I enjoy watching basketball and soccer. I also love to garden.”

Rios retired from his agricultural career in 2003. The following year, he moved to Orlando to be closer to his family.

Impressionism and Inspiration

Today, Rios demonstrates his versatility and In 1998, Rios began to research art and studied talents in his classical, contemporary, modern oil and acrylic painting, drawing and other techand impressionistic paintings. He names impresniques under renowned Brazilian artists, including sionists Monet and Botaro as his favorite artists. Euclides Botaro and Conceição Boaventura in When asked what his favorite piece of artwork he Belo Horizonte. He considers Boaventura, who has created is, Rios responds, “‘Laginha Farm, Baadmired his talent to paint and encouraged him to sil’ (oil on canvas, 11 3/4 x 17 ¾ inches), because participate in exhibits and competitions, to be his when I was a kid I used to visit a place just like main mentor. this, so it reminds me of my childhood.”

Plants and rural sites have always played an important part in the artist’s life.

Brazilian Baroque, fruits, rural landscapes and architecture are other common themes in Rios’ work.

Common themes in his art include flowers, fruits, rural landscapes and Brazilian Baroque architecture. Rios also enjoys painting abstract art on occasion. “Since I was in the plant business, flowers became natural for me to paint,” says Rios. “I always had a love for plants, and you can see that in my work. When my kids were little, we had a nursery side business, so once more flowers were a part of my life.” When it comes to deciding what to paint, Rios says it depends on the day and the inspiration. “I have all the nature paintings in my mind, because of all my trips and my past profession. I also like to look at nature and nature photography to get some inspiration.” The artistic accomplishment Rios is most proud of is exhibiting some of his paintings in Europe, since that is where Impressionism started. “One of my dreams is to visit Europe and see in person my favorite artists’ pieces,” he says. Tacy Callies (tlcallies@aol.com) is an editor and writer in Orlando, Florida.

MUSIC suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. Santana liked the idea but went one better, proposing that they recruit Rolie, Shrieve and Carabello for what would be called Santana IV. After initial writing sessions and rehearsals took place in 2013, the group recorded throughout 2014 and 2015, amassing 16 spellbinding tracks that combined all their signature elements - Afro-Latin rhythms, soaring vocals, electrifying blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and irrepressibly jubilant percussion work - with widescreen hooks and melodies that will lodge themselves in the thicket of listeners’ senses and stay there.

“Carlos and I feel more connected than ever,” says Schon. “We get super-aggressive when we play, but also melodic and poetic. We have an incredible dialog with each other on our guitars.” April 15, 2016 marks the release date of Santana IV, the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early '70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). The album signifies the first time in 45 years - since 1971's multi-platinum classic Santana III - that the quintet has recorded together. Santana IV features 16 all-new tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana

Santana’s recurring themes of love and tolerance are common threads throughout Santana IV, most dramatically on the epic tone poem album closer “Forgiveness,” a languid and breathtakingly gorgeous atmospheric groover. Music fans familiar with the “roaring lion” artwork on Santana’s 1969 debut album will instantly greet Heather Griffin-Vine’s graphic for Santana IV as a gloriously realized update of that iconic image. “I really think the music goes along with the cover, and vice versa,” says Santana. “It all fits together beautifully.” Few bands can pick up a musical dialog after 45 years apart, but on Santana IV each band member reaches a new level of virtuosity and communal intuition on a collection of songs that easily stands side-by-side with the group’s treasured early work. “When you can go back and break new ground with joy and determination - and some whoopass energy - it gets you going,” says Santana. “I think we achieved something very rare. This music was screaming to come out of us. It wasn’t about nostalgia. It was about passion.” Santana IV will be released on April 15, 2016, on Santana IV Records and is distributed by Thirty Tigers/RED Distribution. It will be available for pre-order on Amazon. “It was magical,” Santana says. “We didn’t have to try to force the vibe - it was immense. From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana.”

President Barack Obama on Tuesday called for the rapid development of tests, vaccines and treatments to fight the mosquito-transmitted Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects and could spread to the United States in warmer months. U.S. health officials are stepping up efforts to study the link between Zika virus infections and birth defects, citing a recent study estimating the virus could reach regions where 60 percent of the U.S. population lives. Obama was briefed on the potential spread of the virus by his top health and national security officials on Tuesday. "The president emphasized the need to accelerate research efforts to make available better diagnostic tests, to develop vaccines and therapeutics, and to ensure that all Americans have information about the Zika virus and steps they can take to better protect themselves from infection," the White House said in a statement. The virus has been linked to brain damage in thousands of babies in Brazil. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, a close cousin of dengue and chikungunya, which causes mild fever and rash. An estimated 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms, making it difficult for pregnant women to know whether they have been

infected. On Monday, the World Health Organization predicted the virus would spread to all countries across the Americas except for Canada and Chile. In a blog post, National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins cited a Lancet study published Jan. 14 in which researchers predicted the Zika virus could be spread in areas along the East and West Coasts of the United States and much of the Midwest during warmer months, where about 200 million people live. The study also showed that 22.7 million more people live in humid parts of the country where mosquitoes carrying the virus could live year round. Given the threat, Collins said "it is now critically important to confirm, through careful epidemiological and animal studies, whether or not a causal link exists between Zika virus infections in pregnant women and microcephaly in their newborn babies." Microcephaly results in babies being born with abnormally small heads. There is still much to learn about Zika infections, experts said. For example, it is not clear how common Zika infections are in pregnant women, or when during a pregnancy a woman is most at risk of transmitting the virus to her fetus.

On Tuesday, the CDC added the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic to its list of countries and territories with Zika transmissions, bringing the total to 24. The CDC has told pregnant women not to travel to countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean affected by Zika. Travel companies, including United Airlines, have begun offering refunds or allowing pregnant women to postpone trips to regions affected by Zika with no penalty.

Collins said the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease is conducting studies to more fully understand the effects of Zika in humans, and to develop better diagnostic tests to quickly determine if someone has been infected. The NIAID is also working on testing new drugs that might be effective against the virus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also announced new instructions for pediatricians treating infants whose mothers may have been exposed to the virus during pregnancy.

There are no global estimates for how many people in the world have been infected by the Zika virus, World Health Organization spokesman Christian Lindmeier said on Tuesday. He said that because Zika has such mild symptoms, the virus has "not really been on the radar." Lindmeier said it was not yet clear whether the virus affecting Brazil and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean was a mutated version of the virus that has caused prior outbreaks.

In those guidelines, the CDC made clear that it considers the Zika virus a nationally notifiable condition, and instructs doctors to contact their state or territorial health departments to facilitate testing of potentially infected infants. Dr. Kathryn Edwards of Vanderbilt University, who serves on the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on infectious disease, said the guidelines were intended to help establish whether Zika causes microcephaly and to help pregnant women who may have been infected with the virus. Microcephaly is a lifelong condition with no known cure, the CDC website said. Symptoms range from mild to severe. In mild cases, infants often have no symptoms other than small head size, but doctors still need to check their development regularly. In severe cases, babies may need speech, occupational and physical therapy. The guidelines for testing infants affected by Zika infections follows CDC guidelines for caring for pregnant women exposed to Zika virus, which were first reported by Reuters. The CDC said last week it is trying to determine how many pregnant women may have traveled to affected regions in the past several months.

He said the WHO was working with the CDC, the Institut Pasteur in France and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to establish that. "There is a lot of effort going into this now, on the ground, in the laboratories, everywhere, Lindmeier said.
