We feel that responsibility is the keyword regarding nature and the playgrounds we all love. For us, responsible is more than just sustainability, a term that became trendy and over-marketed in the last few years. Responsible goes deeper and means to think and learn before you act. Therefore we believe proper steps taken at the right time are the key. We work closely with our partners, who constantly develop revolutionary, sustainable materials and adapt these into our lines at the right time. The critical step towards not wasting finite Earth resources and human energy is producing long-lasting products with bulletproof quality.

Long before this topic became a popular subject, we were interested in our influence on the environment, the people we work with, and how our products are made. We always wanted to know who makes our products, where and how. Pavel Kubíček, the Horsefeathers co-founder and head designer Pepe Šetele are in charge of the production. Both are passionate snowboarders and bikers, so they understand both communities. Pavel and Pepe have spent months on factory floors working with the factory owners and workers. We always need to know that people’s conditions are safe and offer a positive environment. To make high-end technical products, the factories and people working in them have to be very skilled and operate in a good workplace setting.

Over the years, we have established lasting relationships with our producers, which in many cases have grown into friendships. Most of them have also visited us at our Headquarters in Pilsen, to see how we run our company. Of course, being from a city that produces the best beer in the world does help.

We proudly produce a significant part of our streetwear and accessories in European factories, which lowers the CO2 emissions, as the total transports between factories, warehouses, and retailers are shorter. Over the years, we have established long-term partnerships based on high quality and continuous development.

ULTRATECH SHELL FABRIC

UltraTech is a range of high-quality materials developed in collaboration with leading Taiwanese manufacturers. Designed to maximize performance across diverse conditions, UltraTech fabrics are manufactured in fully controlled facilities, using advanced processes: The technical outer shell is laminated with a fully waterproof and breathable membrane, then treated with a durable water repellent film. This process guarantees a high-performance fabric that is rugged and robust.

OUTER C6 DWR COATING

Durable Water Repellent coating is hydrophobic. It repels water, causing it to ‘bead up’ on the outer surface and stopping it from penetrating the outer layer. When water cannot penetrate the fabric’s outer surface and saturate inner layers, breathability remains high, weight remains low, and performance is not compromised. We use only the C6 treatment that breaks down faster in the environment and has less potential toxicity to humans and wildlife.

Developed in collaboration with Taiwanese manufacturers specializing in technical fabrics and yarns, this is our first generation of UltraTech 2.5-layer. Jackets made from the 2.5-layer material are very lightweight, breathable, and packable. These are the essential features of all bike jacket.

BLUESIGN APPROVED FABRIC

The UltraTech manufacturers have their production processes and composition of the components assessed according to the bluesign criteria to optimize sustainability. Based on the strict bluesign standards, the manufacturers must act responsibly and sustainably concerning people, the environment, and resources. All relevant information must be disclosed to ensure consistent transparency and traceability of all processes. Components verified as sustainably produced are eligible to be bluesign approved.

YKK ZIPPERS

Zippers from YKK are synonymous with quality and reliability. These extremely durable, easy-to-use, high-quality zippers are currently the global leader for performance technical-wear applications. Being smooth to operate and with less tendency to catch, or malfunction, these zippers can be easily utilized using one hand in even the coldest conditions. We use YKK on the majority of the products in our range.

SCOTCHGARD PROTECTION

Strong fabric protection prevents any liquid from soaking into the fiber, thus ensuring better moisture wicking from the body and easier washing of stains. The material retains its properties, such as softness and breathability, longer.

THREADS BY COATS

Coats have been manufacturing threads for over 250 years. This experience means that their thread range results from decades of innovation and constant improvement and is known worldwide for being of the highest quality and incorporating many patented technologies. This results in some of the strongest and most reliable threads ever manufactured.

SILVER ION TECHNOLOGY

Silverplus® is the leading silver ion technology for maintaining hygiene and freshness under extreme conditions. Silverplus® transfers the element silver into a silver compound that has been applied to microstructured substrates through highly innovative coating procedures. This advanced procedure creates a virtually infinite deposit from which highly effective positive silver ions are set free in small, precisely dosed quantities whenever needed. Silverplus® is capable of contributing to stopping odor-causing bacteria.

ANTIBACTERIAL TREATMENT

Fabric treatment that guarantees long-lasting protection against a wide range of microorganisms. Treated products maintain their freshness and, above all, prevent the onset of odors. Treatment remains attached to the fiber and does not migrate, which increases the lifetime of the treated products.

4-WAY STRETCH FABRICS

A range of stretch fabrics developed to be used on products, which are frequently under pressure during movement. These fabrics contain from 1% to 14% of elastane. Four-way (4 way) stretch material is designed to stretch and recover in all four directions. This ensures that no matter how you move, the material moves with you, allowing for motion without restriction.

Smart packaging

2-WAY STRETCH FABRICS

A range of stretch fabrics developed to be used on products, which are under pressure during movement. These fabrics contain from 1% to 14% of elastane. 2-way stretch fabrics stretch in one direction, usually from side to side, depending on the knit.

JACKETS BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING

Our jackets now come in P-life® oxo-biodegradable plastics. P-life® is the world’s only proven oxo-biodegradable plastic additive. P-Life® oxo-biodegradable technology is an effective way to accelerate plastic degradation without harming the environment or compromising functionality. P-Life® is an additive that allows manufacturers to custom tailor the life of every plastic product they make, without lowering the product performance. When added to polyolefin polymers, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, P-Life® creates molecular scissions in the polymer chain, allowing oxygen to bond to the polymer and break it down into smaller and smaller compounds. These can be then naturally consumed by microorganisms, which convert the compounds into organic biomass. This technology results in a plastic product, that will begin to degrade in few years (or even months) after its use, instead of decades or centuries of polluting the Earth.

STREETWEAR RECYCLED PACKAGING FROM LDPE TRASH

QUICK DRY FABRICS

These fabrics are engineered with enhanced moisture management. They push moisture to the fabric’s surface and eliminate it as fast as possible, keeping you dry and comfortable during in or out of water activities.

For our streetwear line we are now using recycled packaging from LDPE trash. We have also managed to reduce the packaging size by approximately half by folding our products in a smart way, thus saving CO2 emissions and space during transport.

Photochromic lenses

Photochromic lenses are adaptive lenses that quickly react to exposure to direct sunlight. Lenses darken when exposed to light of sufficiently high frequency, most commonly UV light. They return to their clear state when the activating light is absent. These lenses are excellent for bikers and runners, who often find themselves at the mercy of changing light conditions.

History

The whole Horsefeathers story started back in 1989 in British Columbia, Canada, in a small town called Rock Creek. Hanuš and his friends were into snowboarding, which was a pretty new sport at that time. It was more like a rebellion against the local lifestyle as the whole area was just farms and cowboys. They were riding as much as they could and live the lifestyle of a board-riding crew.

1989

This is the first official Horsefeathers design ever made. In 1993 we launched the first Horsefeathers collection of 50 tees and 200 stickers. This tee is one of them.

1992

Back in 1989, snowboarding was nothing like we know it today. No snowparks, no high-speed lifts, no social media, no digital. It was a simple analog world. Yet what lacked in high-end technologies was abundantly compensated by the full-on energy that every snowboarder felt for that lifestyle. Snowboarding was new, weird, fresh, and on fire. It was a definite rebellion against the established team-sport mentality. When Stew Carlson started using his Grandmother’s quote, “That’s horsefeathers Stewart!” an idea was born. The rest is history.

This is the first-ever Horsefeathers advertisement. It was a last-minute call for the first issue of legendary Czech Board magazine and we are still not sure what this means. „There was no plan to do an ad, but when the funky image of naked kids floated up, it was a must to do. Horsefeathers to the point,“ comments Hanuš.

This is the first Horsefeathers snowboard advertisement we made in 1998. Pavel behind the lens, Hanuš dropping the cliff. Shot at Whitewater, B.C., during the 97/‘98 trip. After the first outerwear collection sold out, Hanuš and Pavel took off to British Columbia, Canada, for two months of snowboarding. After coming back, there was so much work to handle that they had to get everything in line and structured.

The MTB team was born. Among the first riders were Richard Gasperotti and Jiří Hubáč, followed by names such as Tomáš “eMTý” Marek, Láďa Klauz, Tomáš Šorejs, Pavel Schwarz, Martin “Čárys” CHeníček and Tomáš “Leader” Zejda.

In 2006 we made the first Horsefeathers City Jib as a local jib contest that quickly grew into an international event that in 2008 saw in front of the Pilsen St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral more than five thousand people and the riders list contained big names like Fredu, Sirvio, Alex Tank, Marc Swoboda or Hans Åhlund.

Hanuš moves to Pilsen, the Czech Republic where he meets Pavel Kubíček. Together they started Horsefeathers as a brand. This photo on a rooftop in Pilsen was shot on a funky 70s Russian camera.

1995

1994

The first “office” was cozy mayhem of salvaged furniture, posters, snow and skate mags, “high-tech” electronics all surrounded by boxes of clothing.

1997

Our first outerwear collection and first catalog dropped in fall 1997. The Shadow jacket looks on-trend even now.

2003

2006

After a 5-year break, the Horsefeathers bike team is formed again, including the legends Richard “Gaspi” Gasperotti and Tomas “Leader” Zejda. They are joined by stalwarts Michal Kosík and young guns Kuba Hejl and Filip Vokurka.

2022

Zillertal Valley legend Steve Gruber joined the Global team. His experiences with backcountry riding brought a lot of testing and improvement into our Addicted to Powder line.

2020

In 2015 all focus was put on snowboarding and on building an awesome team that would be tuned on to the same philosophy as everyone at HF. From meeting Tyler on a subway in Munich that year and super simply working out a deal, or hooking up with Mans shortly after, to having Eiki Helgason onboard just seems to make perfect sense.

Showing the collections at ISPO marked the beginning of growing the brand internationally. This same year our first full-length movie, Fragments, dropped on VHS in 2004, covering all the action sports we supported at that time. The premiere party in Pilsen was crazy!

2021

Ethan Morgan joined the Horsefeathers Global team, and the first-ever DYIX STRT JAM took place in Innsbruck. Ethan’s personality and riding style fit our crew perfectly.

2018

After two successful seasons of atrip apparel, Halldór Helgason and the Stigma Distribution crew have decided to implement the brand into Horsefeathers as Halldor’s signature line. Halldór Helgason becomes a member of the Horsefeathers global team joining his brother Eiki. The first Horsefeathers atrip line by Halldór Helgason hit the stores in winter 2018/19.

The Deck belt was a brainchild of Hoffee, the marketing manager at that time and the project made headlines as it utilized broken decks from our riders and friends.

2011

Riding in British Columbia, Canada is always a good plan. The team grabbed the same van as Hanuš and Pavel in the ’97/’98 trip and did a tour of all iconic locations. Onboard of the time shuttle were Ville Uotila, Lukas Draxl, Rene Biedenkap, Honza Zajíc, Richard Skandera, and Zuzana Salz, all documented by David Blažek and KarKys.

2008/09

Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam was an internationally recognized 4* event at Dachstein glacier that always attracted the best riders pumped on competing in the first contest of the season. The contest under our name ran from 2007 to 2011 and was part of the Horsefeathers Superpark Dachstein and Horsefeathers Superpark Planai combo.

2007

2012

Opening a flagship store at a prime location in Prague made it possible to set up an environment that would reflect everything Horsefeathers represents as a brand. And yes, there is free beer.

2009

The Breakthrough Brand of the Year Award presented by SOURCE magazine recognizes the activities and efforts of a small/new brand that has been seen by retailers to have progressed the most in the year. Thanks, guys!

2008

Finish legend Ville Uotila joined our team in 2008 and quickly became one of the most significant riders in Horsefeathers history. During the years, he produced insane ads, photos, and video parts. He was also part of the B.C. 20th Anniversary trip crew. Thanks for the good times, Ville!
