MY FAMILY GOES ON A SLEIGH RIDE ON THE 23RD EVERY YEAR IN A GIANT ROCK TRUCK THAT WAS CONVERTED INTO A SLEIGH IN 1950. MY GRANDMOTHER, PRICILLA HOBDAY AND HER FAMILY HAVE SUNG CAROLS IN IT EVERY YEAR IN THE SACRAMENTO AREA SINCE SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL. MY FAMILY AND ALL

SLEIGH-BELLS FROM UPSTAIRS WE ALL RUN UPSTAIRS AND CHASE HIM UP THE

Equestrian Keepsake Ornaments Hallmark, Swarovski and even Tiffany’s all offer their own take on that special holiday keepsake. And sure, a sparkly crystal with the year noted on one side is nice. But what is so much better? A personal, equestrian-themed holiday keepsake, of course! Read on to find out how you can take that championship show ribbon from your biggest win this year, and make it into something special to save and bring out for many more holidays to come!
HOW TO: 1. Purchase a fillable, glass ornament shell from your local hobby store, or order one online at Amazon (they have lots of the big ones). 2. Choose a special show ribbon that you earned from your biggest win this season. 3. Gently remove the ribbon streamers from the rosette. They are usually loosely glued in the back or stapled. 4. Slice the streamers into narrow strips, then roll them into tight coils and affix each with a small glue dot. To fill the ornament even more, we used extra streamers from some other firsts and second ribbons earned at the same show. Place the streamers inside the ornament shell. 5. Leave enough room so that you can fit the ribbon’s rosette in the ornament shell, too. 6. Once you have placed the streamers in the ornament, seal the top. We used a pearlescent puff paint to decorate the edges and cover the seal at the top. 7. If you have very good penmanship (and even if you don’t), carefully write the name of the show, class name, and year on the glass exterior of the ornament. Use a metallic pen, or a fine-tipped paintbrush. Now, rather than your ribbon sitting in a box waiting for the day you can frame it, this souvenir from your most memorable win will serve as a fun reminder that can be relived every time you unpack your holiday ornaments!

CHOCOLATIER, THE BAKER THE CANDLESTICK MAKER Sometimes great ideas come when you least expect it while out on a trail ride, in the shower, or right in the middle of shuffling your kids from one activity to the next. For these three entrepreneurs, their “ah-ha” moments were inspired by a love for horses and a shared passion for starting something great on their own.

Dark Horse Chocolates was created by now Owner and CEO Phyllis L e B l a n c . Phyllis LeBlanc started her career at Harbor Sweets as a part-time college employee dipping chocolates. After earning her bachelors degree, she stayed with Harbor Sweets and moved into various executive roles while pursuing her M.B.A. A lifelong equestrian and an awardwinning dressage competitor, it was an entrepreneurship class at Boston University’s School of Management that sparked the idea to merge her chocolate career and love of horses into a new gifting line, and Dark Horse Chocolates became an instant hit. Dark Horse Chocolates are imprinted with horses and riding symbols, and include scrumptious Peppermint Ponies and Dressage Classics made of Almond Buttercrunch Toffee in beautiful collectibles.
A love of baking with her young daughter led entrepreneur Cordelia Wolf to found Charleigh’s Cookies, a natural line of healthy horse cookies. Her own desire to provide nutritious, organic food prepared with ingredients from her own garden, paired with her desire to teach her daughter, Charleigh, about the power and joy of the horse/human connection inspired the line of fresh, organic, horse treats. Without preservatives or sugars, Charleigh’s Cookies flavors and fresh and natural in tastes that horses like. For Cordelia, Charleigh’s Cookies is her way to say thank you for the valued life lessons that horses have taught her.
Kristin Loewenthal produces a line of all natural soy blend candles that are hand poured in small batches and call to mind a collection of the best scents from both worlds. The name stable+sea, says Kristin, stemmed from “the two environments that have shaped me the most”. Now living in the heart of wine country, she ‘upcycles’ wine and water bottles into a perfect candle container. Hand cut and polished, each candle container is a labor of love, not to mention the rich soy candle they contain. Stable + Sea also offers scents in small tins that are an ideal alternative to glass when you might find yourself say, in a trailer at a horse show, or on your yacht. The “Stable” scent line includes Tack Room (leather and must), PonyBreath (peppermint), and Blue Ribbon (champagne). The “Sea” line includes Dog Watch (coffee), Captain’s Cabin (teakwood, amber, bayberry), and Gunsmoke (the nautical equivalent of a blue ribbon).
