From the President’s Desk

by Josh Beasley, President, Honest Abe Log Homes My passion for our homes was kindled within the warm atmosphere of a small country kitchen many years ago. My aunt and uncle built their Honest Abe log home in the 1980’s. Throughout my life, my family would make a very early morning trip each Christmas Eve to visit and eat breakfast. My aunt would be up well before the sun, preparing the most wonderful breakfast one could imagine. From about five o’clock until past ten in the morning, family, friends and it seemed like the whole local community would come through their kitchen. They would eat, share stories and memories and celebrate the holiday with one another. My aunt and uncle would juggle greeting everyone that stepped through the door, flipping pancakes, filling coffee cups and asking the grandkids if they were due a lump of coal from Santa or not. That started it all for me. There’s a great story there, and I’ve always thought it would make a beautiful Norman Rockwell scene. Yet, it didn’t just happen that

easy. There was a lot of preparation, work, organization and functional needs that came into play to pull off such an event year after year. The kitchen needed to be open and well designed to allow all of that work to be accomplished. It also needed to be inviting and warm to evoke an emotional connection, feeling like home to anyone who would visit. For those of us that love kitchens and all they encompass, that’s where we can spend a lot of time, effort and anxiety trying to make it just right. At Honest Abe, we like to help with that process, and our designers have helped clients lay out hundreds if not thousands of kitchens. Honest Abe’s log and timber homes offer a lot of flexibility for kitchen designs. In this issue, you’ll find just a few examples of lovely kitchens – perfectly suited for their owners – and ready to make memories for a lifetime.

Lighting enhances the appeal of the chinked logs, natural wood cabinetry, trim and doors, stone island and light wood floors. Lighting choices used were tract lighting on ceiling beams, hanging fixtures over the sink, under-cabinet lights, an intricate, rustic dining room fixture and stained glass transom and sidelights around the exterior door.

By Claudia Johnson, Honest Abe Log Homes The kitchen really is the heart of a home. It is far more than a location from which sustenance is distributed. A kitchen pulsates with daily activity and beats to the rhythms of life’s milestones. Because food itself is so tightly intertwined with a family’s celebrations and sorrows, the practicality of a kitchen is overshadowed by one’s personal perception, interpretation and memory. One challenge of kitchen design becomes how to balance utilitarian needs with aesthetic desires. To be practical, at the very least a kitchen must have a stove, sink, refrigerator and storage space. Modern life demands far more – microwave, dishwasher and small appliances. Beyond that, the options are endless. Even those homeowners who know exactly what they want in necessities and amenities must make choices about those items – countertops, lighting, appliance finishes, cabinetry, fixtures, flooring – a plethora of possibilities. Fortunately, with more than 6,000 homes designed by Honest Abe and occupied throughout the United States and several foreign countries, the Honest Abe design team, working closely with sales representatives, have extensive experience in listening to a customers’ ideas and designing what is envisioned. The textures, grains, patterns and scents of log homes and timber frame homes quite naturally stimulate the senses and often evoke a strong emotional response. The experience of living in a log or timber frame home is tactile and visual. All design choices, each room scape and every decorative touch speaks about and whispers to the homeowner. These six pages illustrate how utility, imagination, creativity, technical skill and heart have resulted in kitchens that enhance the home and etch the memory. HonestAbe.com

Red Quinoa with Roasted Acorn Squash 1 acorn squash (1 to 2 pounds) 1 T. extra virgin olive oil 1 c. red quinoa, rinsed under cold running water until water runs clear 2 c. water 2 T. roasted walnut oil Fine sea salt & cracked black pepper 2 green onions, chopped 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. 2. Slice the acorn squash in half and scrape out the seeds. Brush the cut sides with the olive oil and place, cut side down, on a Lodge 14-inch cast iron baking pan. Bake until tender, about 45 minutes. Let cool. Peel off the skin and discard. Cut the roasted squash into large dice. 3. While the squash roasts, combine the rinsed quinoa and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer, cover, and cook until the water is absorbed, about 12 minutes. 4. Transfer the cooked quinoa to a large bowl, drizzle with the walnut oil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the roasted squash and green onions and gently toss.

Serves 4 to 6 In this recipe from healthy lifestyle consultant, chef, and the force behind healthyeating101.com, Megan McCarthy has added some vibrant colors to her favorite side dish, quinoa. Red quinoa has a bit of a heartier element to it than its white counterpart but is equally delicious. Paired with roasted acorn squash, this makes for a very nice comfort food side with plenty of protein as well being a great source of fiber and potassium. It is quick and easy to make, has very few ingredients and can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. Transform it into a main dish by tossing in roasted chicken. HonestAbe.com
