In the photo above a group of representatives from Macon County, Tennessee, are proudly displaying a check representing grant funds awarded by the State of Tennessee’s Tourism Development department for a new structure where meetings of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and other community organizations may be held. Honest Abe was selected to build the 30’ x 40’ log building that features a meeting room, bathroom and a small kitchenette. Over the four decades we’ve been creating log structures, we’ve been part of thousands of projects throughout Tennessee, and thanks to our Independent Dealer Network, across the United States. And these were not just log homes. Some happy endings are bittersweet. That's certainly so for Michelle Hedges, an Honest Abe homeowner who planned for decades with her husband for their forever home only to lose him suddenly just as the home had been ordered. "Honest Abe was patient and supportive until I was ready to build," Michelle recalls, adding that her sons encouraged her to move forward with the project because their father would have wanted it that way. "It was a pleasure to work with Inez Price, a sales representative at the National Headquarters in Moss, and to see how designer Mike Hix customized the Honest Abe Westfield plan into the home I had envisioned. Maple cabinets with granite counters were custom designed and handcrafted by a local cabinet maker. Michelle left the Douglas fir beams exposed to take full advantage of the character of the wood. She’s mixed vintage pieces and accents with family antiques and modern appliances for an eclectic look. There’s an adjacent pantry and utility room, and an additional kitchen is being constructed in the finished basement. HonestAbe.com

The master suite, surrounded by wide, covered porches, features exposed ceiling beams, natural finish square log walls and hardwood floors stained to appear aged. Michelle chose extra-wide doors, a walk-in shower and a bath vanity with seating to make aging in place easier. The bed was crafted by her late husband. HonestAbe.com

Reid J. Ribble of Wisconsin spoke before Congress in 2012 about the importance of the log home industry, calling it “a quintessential symbol of the American pioneering spirit, embodying America’s strength and ingenuity.” “Log cabin production directly supports thousands of jobs from builders to sales professionals, as well as the housing market, lending institutions and many others,” Ribble noted. Ribble said that National Log Cabin Month also draws attention to the inherent “green” nature of log homes, noting that they are “economically sustainable, reducing waste and employing materials that put Mother Nature’s beauty at center stage.” Beasley explained that the modern manufacturing process for log and timber frame homes utilizes every portion of the log, and pre-cut home packages go up quickly and leave less waste on the job site compared to conventional construction. “Logs used for construction are solid and uninterrupted,” Beasley said. “Coupled with modern sealant materials and building techniques, this makes log homes highly energy efficient.” Honest Abe’s four Tennessee Sales Models will provide free information about all aspects for log and timber home design and construction during July open house events, which are free and open to the public. Who builds my Honest Abe home? Honest Abe provides design, manufacturing and delivery services for log or timber frame homes. We offer one of the most complete log or timber frame packages in the industry. Of course, your package may be customized depending on certain options you exercise during your design phase. Honest Abe has developed a contractor network to assist you in building and completing your log home. Honest Abe Construction Department’s Dry-in Service is available in certain geographical areas as a contract separate from the purchase of your log home package. If you are outside of our Dry-in Service area, Honest Abe will assist you in locating qualified log home builders in your area. Our Dry-in Service includes completion of first floor framing and subfloor, setting the log or timber frame package, constructing the ceiling beam system, building the roof system, erecting the gable ends, installing soffits, fascia, dormer trim and exterior doors and windows, roughing-in the interior walls and stairs and build porches and decks. Regardless of who performs your dry-in services, you’ll be responsible for selecting contractors and craftsmen to complete the excavation, foundations, drywall, carpeting, tile or hardwood flooring installation, roofing, stain application, trim work, plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, painting, electrical and septic tank installation. Honest Abe’s goal is to help you in establishing a business relationship with only the best qualified tradesmen with our Help Everyone Locate Professional Builders (HELP Build) program. Love Handles Corn on the Cob Lodge Cast Iron's new offering, Love Handles, made this frozen corn on the cob from last year’s garden taste like fresh. Here’s what we did: 1. thawed frozen corn then rinsed in warm water 2. melted butter (lots of butter) in Love Handles skillet on medium 3. put corn in skillet and rolled it in butter constantly for about 5 minutes (this takes patience, but it’s worth it) 4. Sprinkle with salt, and keep rolling until some of the kernels begin to brown 5. Remove from heat and serve immediately HonestAbe.com
