The World Is Your Oyster Success Factors for Launching a Global Enterprise from Your Home Office Online platforms and social media have brought our worlds of commerce together. We’re all growing more connected each day. A home-based business can instantly switch on to becoming a global entity, whether a new startup or established business. The relatively small size of a home-based operation enables quickness and flexibility in adapting to global opportunities and capitalizing on these emerging opportunities. This issue’s cover story helps guide your way!

“ You can also leverage your current home business to expand globally. First, in starting up a business, assess its global market potential for growth opportunities. You can start up a business and immediately go global. Do online research on demands for different businesses. Or, find an overseas partner, somebody already in the business who knows the competitive market, to link up with. If starting a local business, set up a branch of the business to develop global markets. Start small, test cautiously and grow smartly. For example, if you are based in the U.S., target Canadian markets first (#1 trading partner for the U.S.). You can also leverage your current home business to expand globally. If you sell a product, start by expanding its sales through ecommerce. If your business is a service, find products related to the service business to sell to a worldwide audience. For example, you operate a business for a home improvement product installed within the home. You then offer this product for sale and export to a country, for home installation. Licensing is a way to facilitate this; use entrepreneurs in other countries to expand your business model. Whatever your business, build an ecommerce platform to expand globally. All businesses should have a profit center centralized in ecommerce. The best products are those that can be delivered electronically. For the sale of a physical product, verify the integrity of an export country’s mail delivery system. Look for ways to deliver outside of potentially substandard postal systems, such as through DHL, UPS and FedEx. Operating a global business requires some unique considerations. Set up business rules to operate across multiple time zones. Use video conferencing to keep connected. Zoom Video Communications or Skype, for example, make international connections instant and seamless. Having that visual interaction can greatly build rapport over just email and occasional voice calls. Also, avoid complex agreements with entrepreneurs in other countries, as these can be difficult to enforce. Operating a global business also requires some unique success factors. If operating in a non-English speaking country, develop basic language skills for that country. Different countries also have distinct cultures, which you can easily research and accommodate. Set up routines for management of business operations with overseas partners. Pay close attention to time differences, and schedule business meetings/teleconferences at times that fall within both of your business days. Exercise more patience in foreign interaction, move slowly and be repetitive in your communications to reduce misunderstandings. Finally, work to reduce things getting “lost in translation.” Put everything in writing to minimize confusions and clarify discussions. The global commerce offers a great opportunity for you to start up and grow your home business. Boundaries are breaking down. The world is your oyster! Globalize Your Venture! Become a World-preneur and Take Your Business to Greater Heights By Kyle Lawheed, Esq.

F E AT U R E

Legality - Threshold Question The threshold question for any business is: can my business be completed without violating The Law? The Law refers to the law as a concept, so one must ask oneself: which laws can conceptually apply to the business I wish to pursue? Although reductive, conceptually speaking, typically five iterations of The Law will govern an international business. In the Forum which the business originates there are two levels, which typically have subsets built within each level, the Local Law and Aggregate Law. The same would apply to the endpoint of the business. Lastly, International Regulations or Accords can present formidable roadblocks to providing services or products internationally. The world-preneur must familiarize himself or herself with all international laws which touch and concern their business to avoid international impasses. The world-preneur understands that it is not only The Law that must be understood at a local, aggregate, and international level, but all things. The legal question is just the start! Nurturing Your International Business Organization and Execution A world-preneur has clear advantages over those who only rely upon local resources for their business but those advantages can crumble like a bridge supporting too much weight and cause an avalanche of problems if the business is not meticulously organized. Our first hypothetical international business will be the selling of sweet potatoes. The start of the business naturally should start at the local level. For instance, if you are a burgeoning sweet potato farmer from North Carolina, try your product out on the local market and fine-tune farming practices to produce the best, well, produce. Once you have mastered your product it would now be the most appropriate time to consider selling your product internationally. You must organize your inventory. A sweet potato farmer who wishes to sell his product all across the globe must decide actual yield amounts or percentages to apportion to each buyer. Once you have organized your inventory and decided to whom you wish to sell your product, everything becomes a matter of execution. Executing the business plan should not be done 10

A home-based business should start at the local level and then expand internationally.

alone. Remember as the world-preneur your business may be executed through the help of a business partner who resides in the desired endpoint of the products or services. Relying upon the savvy of your partner can save countless research hours and help fine-tune your end product. After all, the local expert will know what the consumers in his or her area desire.

farmer most expect a pressing need for sweet potato imports? Markets which come to mind will present two features. Firstly, the market will have a current culture of consumption. It is fairly obvious that sweet potatoes will only be purchased if the customer desires them. Secondly, you will offer the best “nutrition” to the culture of consumption.

So for our North Carolinian sweet potato farmer, where potentially would be the best international market, be it local or aggregate, for this business? Naturally, the easiest country to trade with is the one closest to you. For the North Carolinian, this would likely be a Latin American state or Canada.

So, evaluating these two market features in the light of our two examples, Latin American State and Canada, which market would hypothetically be best? Let us first consider selling the sweet potatoes in a Latin American market. Sweet potatoes were originally cultivated in South or Central America. Moreover, sweet potatoes need high heat climates to grow. Unsurprisingly, there is a strong culture of consumption surrounding sweet potatoes in Latin America.

Relying upon the “ savvy of your partner can save countless research hours and help fine-tune your end product.

Beyond Execution - Fluidly Move with Supply and Demand Supply and demand will likely be the most important notes in the successful international business “concert”. Since we have covered supply, i.e. perfecting your product or service, now it is time to focus on demand. Where would the North Carolinian sweet potato

However, potential demand is not enough to profitably trade with another country (or business located in said country); the product or service must be the one which is most “nutritious”. Our important metaphorical nutrients are time and money. For the consumer demanding the good, the consumer expects relative ease to get the product and a relatively fair price for the quality of the product. It seems highly unlikely that an American farmer could undercut the price of a Latin American one; common sense rules here. It is cheaper to buy fruit that has not been shipped, if all things are equal, because the act of transporting increases cost. Without a niche to fill a unique need, this market appears to stonewall an American sweet potato farmer. Continued on page 12

Conversely, a sweet potato export to Canada potentially is profitable. For sake of argument, assume there is a culture of consumption in Canada (it should be noted that the sweet potato is viewed as a health food and as such is readily consumed in most post-industrial nations) that has been steadily increasing consumption for the last five years. This would present a readily available opportunity to export sweet potatoes to the Canadian market. It would be unlikely that the Canadian market would present the same roadblocks as the Latin American countries. First, the climate in most of Canada is unsuitable for growing sweet potatoes. This makes locally sourcing demand difficult for a Canadian business. Next, our farmer must decide who exactly in Canada is the buyer. Our farmer can choose to sell to a business in the country or instead go directly to the country. Canada is a complex country and as such operates politically and legally on local and aggregate levels. So, our farmer could choose to sell to local governments, businesses, federal or aggregate governments or businesses, etc. This is simply one example of the various types of businesses you could develop. The farmer example

Think outside the box and do solid research when determining the niche.

is important for various reasons, but the skeleton of the example can be applied to any business. The farmer focused on his strengths, built his local market, and investigated other markets which could have a need. These are not the only tips to consider; indeed, see the list below! Service-Based World-preneur Tips ■

Find your binary product which pairs with your service. For everything sold, there is someone who knows everything about that product. Be that person and

make money as an international business analyst! ■

It may seem obvious but for those who possess secondary language mastery, professional-level reading, writing, and conversing, there are many international business opportunities. • Although conversational fluency is important, remember as a world-preneur your focus is professionalism on an international scale. As such, do not overstate

your abilities if you do not have full mastery of a language.

In-person meetings or Skype is preferred when possible.

• The most obvious example is a translator. Use market standards for translators. It should be relatively easy to offer more competitive rates than large companies with translators.

For the consumer “ demanding the good,

• Seek out language mastery credentials and do not forget to advertise this fact for potential consumers. Consumers will feel at ease knowing your language fluency is established by a third party. • Find another translator who shares at least one of your languages and build your network in their market as well. Ideally this person will only share one common language. ■

Similarly, most products need to find their way into consumers’ hands through exposure. Advertisements can be expensive but effective. Marketing is another way to create exposure in the international landscape. You can expose a consumer to a product with education and offer a product for sale simultaneously. Service-based businesses can work

• Project managers may also offer services for those looking to buy real property. of real property is always accompanied by services; here are a couple examples of service-based businesses which would accompany an international real estate transaction: • If you are a real estate agent who forms partnerships with international clientele, chances are your clientele or customer knows someone in their community

Remember marketing and advertising are often the only ways to initially grab a consumer, especially when separated by significant distances.

• If you are serious about expanding, hiring a business analyst is necessary. They can give accurate projections of production, which can be used to calculate your rate of expansion and how much of your product should be diverted to international sales. ■

Product-Based World-preneur Tips ■

Find a niche! Since two areas are involved remember to always try and establish your business locally first. Then find a foreign niche to carve out!

• The New Caledonian Crested Gecko was originally thought to be extinct! The animal has become a staple in the reptile pet trade industry even though this humble lizard originates from a small island.

• In some instances, you may wish to hire a local consultant who specializes in trade to guide you through shipping procedures and dealing with customs. • If you are not able to afford a consultant, legal how-to websites written by attorneys are valuable. Do no rely on information not written by an attorney

Think outside the box; sometimes the niche is created out of climate. If the local market has a taste for a foreign food, you can likely get a premium for your product! Here are some examples of groups of people or a person utilizing locality to become world-preneurs: • Quinoa is pseudocereal which originates from the Andean region in South America. It has become a worldwide-consumed product and the best quinoa comes from its native land.

Hire an analyst or consultant if you wish to expand your businesses globally. They can give you a good idea of whether your product will appeal to consumers.

profitable. Seek out individuals with a long history in an area known for the resources. For example, in the American Appalachian Mountains, local families often know where precious gems are found. They can be a resource for international precious gem trading! ■

When first exploring your market, go there if possible! Also, shipping a small portion of your product on the plane is cost-effective. Ship allowed items only.

Ultimately, your profit margins will www.homebusinessmag.com

be limited by shipping prices. Price shop in the beginning, middle, and end; always look for the best price for shipping. With these tips in mind, let us explore the service side of international business, highlighting the tips from above, and show the differences between a product-based business versus a service-based business.

Imagine our sweet potato farmer example from earlier, except this time the farmer controls 80% of sweet potato production in North Carolina. Now the farmer must rely on sophisticated and organized methods when shipping his products internationally. The farmer must rely on a service-based business unless he wishes to gamble. Q: You were going to go to hang out with Ava without being in the movie? OW: Yes, I would have been completely fine with that. Only then, I took a look at the script. I said I would do it without looking at the book. I said yes first, then I read the script. It wasn’t until the very first day I was called for the fitting of the costume that I realized it was getting real. It’s been more than a delight for me. The whole process was a big delight.

On Her Movie A Wrinkle in Time, Running for President, and Her Biggest Dream When She Was Little By Suzy Maloy / The Interview Feed Q: How would you describe this movie? OW: It’s a modern version of The Wizard of Oz. It’s not just a kid’s film. It has a lot of wisdom and positive energy behind it. The same way Oz does. This movie is all about developing your own sense of belief, confidence, and empowerment for yourself. Q: Female empowerment is hitting at the right time. Would you agree? OW: To see Eva directing all of these men running around was very powerful and very empowering. I am so proud to be part of this experience and to see that it’s possible. It was great to see — a true moment of female empowerment, indeed. Q: We are living in times with a lot of darkness today. Do you believe it is still okay to be hopeful? OW: My character is in a cave and talks about

the darkness spreading so fast across the land, and that we must fight the darkness with the light. I do believe in this. We are always in search of warriors who can bring back hope. That is what this movie really is all about. It’s all about bringing back hope. Q: Pretty powerful stuff… OW: Yes. I was actually thinking about all of

Q: Why do you think you are so beloved among so many people in America? OW: I don’t know! I have always tried to put a positive attitude out there. I have always tried to be there for everybody. I know dark times, I know poverty, and I have never forgotten what it feels like to be out and lost. I think I have continued to listen to the ones nobody else wants to listen to, and people do remember that.

Q: What are your plans for the future, if not moving to the White House?

OW: It’s very flattering, and I feel honored that my name would even be mentioned when it comes to this kind of call of duty, but I am not sure that’s the right job for me. I like people too much, and I want to be somebody who doesn’t want to sell her soul for power.

OW: I want to continue on my journey to make the world a better place. I am in this incredible position where I can now help others achieve their dreams. That’s a pretty powerful place and a very satisfying task. I am probably the happiest I have ever been in my life, and that’s just plain bliss.

OW: We do need new leadership that unites. I couldn’t agree more, but out of turmoil, unity and compassion are born. I am positive it will happen sooner or later. This country is known for its resiliency and compassion. That’s not gone; it’s just not heard as loudly as it usually is.

20+ Ideas for Home-Based and Mobile Businesses You Can Launch This Summer 1..Amusement Park Helper: While it is a classic summer job for teens, amusement parks wouldn’t mind the extra hand this season as they will definitely be packed with tourists and park-goers. If you have the time, you can help out in a popcorn stand or be a tour guide for a group of kids. You do not have to get an eighthour shift. You can just take the hours whenever you’re free so it gives you extra time to earn money by doing something else. 2. App Tester: Giant tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and even Facebook are known to employ ordinary people to test their apps before launching them to the general public. This way, their apps are rigorously tested for bugs and errors. As an app tester, you’re tasked to provide your constructive feedback on user-friendliness, functionality, and other things that would be helpful in order for these companies to improve their apps. 3. Band Shirt Seller: Beyoncé ended the Coachella festival with a show-stopping performance this year, but that doesn’t mean the season is over. You can expect a lot of music festivals, concerts, and gigs all summer, which means business! Set up a small stand outside the venue or concert area (with the event organizer’s permission) and sell shirts with a printed logo of the performing bands. You can even include the name and the date of the event so concertgoers can have something that will make them remember that fun night with their favorite band. 4. Company Website Developer: Technology has made it easier for us to transact online — without ever even leaving our own house. This is why companies are quick to follow the trend that allows their customers to purchase their products online, or even book appointments on their website — depending on their business needs. If you have a working knowledge on web design and development that would allow you to create websites for small and medium-sized companies, then this is for you. If you are tasked to include a shop page wherein customers can

choose an item they like and pay for it online using their credit card, make sure that the flow and process is easy for everyone no matter the age. 5. Dog and Cat Sitter: Summer is the perfect time to reignite your passion for cute, cuddly pets as their owners will probably be out of town or heading to the beach. In fact, you can even make some extra cash out of it. This mobile business idea does not require much capital as you only need to spend a little for buying treats and poo bags. You can post ads in your local vets, pet stores, and even online for maximum exposure. 6. Garage Cleaner: Time to put on a comfortable outfit and start flexing those muscles! Some households would most likely be doing a general cleaning come summertime, so why don’t you strike a deal with some of your close friends to help out in the garage? If you have a pickup truck that can carry old pieces of junk, this mobile business idea is definitely for you. After the cleanup, you can then sell scrap metals and other items in a junk shop for extra cash. 7. Hometown Tour Guide: If you are coming home for summer and your town is a tourist magnet, then you are cut out for this next business idea. Not only is offering a guided tour a way to welcome tourists in your beautiful hometown, but it is also the perfect seasonal job that earns you easy cash. While starting capital is not exactly needed, it would help you a lot to do well in this gig if you have a deep background on the history of your hometown. Some tourists will actually be listening to you, so prepare yourself for questions. 8. House Exterior Painter: Families renovate their houses and do general cleaning no matter what the season is, but giving your house exterior a quick makeover is mostly done during the summer. House painting is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to earn extra bucks. Prepare to shell out some money to get started because you’ll need painting supplies and equipment like

a ladder, face mask, sprayer, paint trays, etc. If you do not have any prior experience painting house walls, start building your portfolio by offering your painting services to family and friends first. 9. Menu Planner: More and more people have been starting to watch their calorie intakes and eating habits. If the idea of planning a whole week’s dishes excites you, then you will love this. As a meal planner, you will be helping people plan their meals by coming up with a variety of recipes while still sticking to their dietary needs and specifications. The trick is to avoid repetition. 10. Nursing Home Entertainer: Even at nursing homes, you can still earn extra money. Entertaining old residents by reading their favorite books to them is one way. Sure, this doesn’t earn you a lot, but this job provides you with experience and teaches you empathy. Plus, this would definitely look good on your résumé if you should ever need future employment. There is also a possibility that some families might offer you to become a caregiver for their loved ones. This is an even better opportunity, but make sure you let them know just how long you are planning to stay. 11. On-Call Barbecue Caterer: Many families want to host a barbecue party in their own yard, but not everyone wants to do the dirty work — the preparation. This is where you come in. Armed with your secret homemade marinating sauce, barbecue sticks, and fork, prepare to impress your clients’ visitors by serving a delicious set. Be sure to serve your barbecue with a smile on your face. In this type of business, a good word of mouth is very important. 12. On-Call Face Painter: Summertime means outdoor parties, barbecues, and kids running around with floaters. If you know your way around paints and brushes, you can start your own face-painting business for the summer. You can invest in a really durable mirror and a Continued on page 20

great face paint kit made from natural ingredients so it doesn’t irritate anyone, especially kids. You can then start marketing your services by advertising at a local gift shop or in stores that sell party supplies. 13. On-Call Swimming Instructor: If you took swimming back in college and really learned from it, then here’s another mobile business idea you can launch this summer. Offer to teach kids to learn how to swim, whether individually or in groups. To get this business started, you will need zero capital and a lot of patience. Be sure to keep a smile on as you will be around kids and toddlers. 14. On-Call Swimming Pool Cleaner: While some enjoy driving to the beach, many families are still content on staying at home and dipping in their own swimming pools right in their backyard. Cleaning a swimming pool isn’t entirely easy, but every home that has one needs it maintained and cleaned for their use. And because of this, finding your clients won’t be difficult — so, more money-making opportunities for you. 15. Online Career Counselor: If you like giving career advice to new graduates, you will definitely enjoy being an online career counselor. Landing an interview nowadays for a job you’ve wanted so bad is hard enough, let alone actually getting it. As a career counselor or coach, your job is to provide options for these people who are trying to get into a specific industry so they can make an informed decision. Make them realize their skills and strengths so they can make a good first impression to their hiring managers. 16. Online Community Manager: Many brands, especially those popular ones, employ community managers to help them respond to customer queries and comments on their social

20

media accounts. For sure, you’ve tried reaching out to a brand you use, and the people who respond to your questions are actually community managers. Find a local brand that has a significant following on their Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts. Offer your services to handle customer support and social media management to earn extra money on the side. 17. Online Game Streamer: Can’t stand the heat outside but still want to earn some extra money? One of the most fun ways to earn money while still doing what you love is to stream your own games via Twitch and other online streaming platforms. If you already have a considerable fan base and following, then half the battle is already won. By streaming your games online, ads can be shown which means money for you. Sometimes, you do not have to leave your air-conditioned room to start racking in some bucks. 18. Online Survey Taker: Another wonderful way to earn some cash on the side is by answering online surveys. Companies usually hire people to answer a questionnaire about their products and services. Using the data gathered in these tests, they are able to adjust their marketing approach and overall improve their products and services. If you have a lot to say about the current selections in your local grocery, and love being heard and making a difference, this job is for you. 19. Résumé Writer: Teens and college students are out to find a summer job to keep them busy during this rather boring season away from school and friends. If you have a knack for writing impressive résumés that effectively market your clients’ skills and experiences, then this is a solid fit for you. Remember that these teenagers do not have millions in their bank accounts, so be careful in charging them more than what they can afford to pay you.

20. Smoothie Shop Owner: Don’t let you and your bank account get dehydrated this summer season. Smoothies are trendy, good for your health, and are totally easy to prepare. When choosing a location for your smoothie stand, bear in mind that it would be ideal if it’s near the beach, gyms, and business areas. Make sure to use a screaming bright color for your juice bar for it to stand out. 21. Used Books Seller: Summer is a fantastic time for you to do what you love. While some enjoy getting under the sun, many still prefer to stay in their rooms to read a good book. If you’re one to keep old textbooks and paperbacks — and no one else in your family would find a need for them — it’s time to turn these books over to someone who might need them in exchange for a little cash. 22. Vacation House Sitter: Vacation house owners, especially in coastal areas that are crowded with seasonal tourists, usually spend their weekends away from the beach. This is a splendid opportunity for you to offer your services to collect their papers, mow their lawns, and even water their gardens while they are away. This works best if you live near the beach.

This summer, let the sunshine invigorate your entrepreneurial spirit! Peruse this list and decide on one or more businesses to launch. Some can be managed entirely via a laptop, and others will require you to get up and go! Choose a career that suits your lifestyle, engage in the proper training to become excellent in your trade, and get started toward fulfilling the dream of being your own boss. Felicia left her home-based studio and launched Madd Love Beauty Salon and Spa in 2013. Her salon has motivational quotes throughout, creating a positive vibe. Felicia often hosts brow classes for students who would also like a career being a Master Brow Stylist.

“My kids are my inspiration. Just wanted to have something of my own to pass down to them to show them that with hard work anything is possible," Felicia says. Felicia has always been in touch with hair styling since she was a licensed hair stylist and used it as a second income source. It was only after the shutting down of the transportation office that she rejoined school and got an Aesthetics Licence and MUA certificate. In fact, Felicia's opening space was in her house. Felicia gave all that it took.

No enterprise would rise to success without some important ideals, not merely a sentence written on a wall but a code to live by. All great firms strive hard to live up to their name, their fame and quality. Even Madd Love lives by a code which is also reflected in their high-class quality and their impressive work. Their code is C-P-R. This stands for: consistency of the topnotch quality delivered under every circumstance, professionalism of the employees and zero-tolerance policy under all situations, and

Advertising Professional Leaves Corporate World to Focus on Sustainable Fashion By Shyamli Thakur

hile being an entrepreneur is no child’s play, it is one of the most difficult yet the most fulfilling jobs in the world. Here’s the success story of Gabrielle Jervis, a media and advertising professional from Australia, who nurtured a profound love for designer clothes from a young age. It’s truly remarkable how her worthy endeavour and utter determination led to the invention of House of Gab, a sustainable fashion house based in LA that aims to provide contemporary designer garments without compromising style and design for the planet.

premium magazines like Elle, Vogue Australia, and Real Living. But this also drew Jervis' attention to the fact that Australia, despite its incredible style and natural beauty, was not known on the world stage as a leader in sustainable fashion.

While Sydney was fabulous, there was a sadness she felt on the inside. Leading to a long quest of self-discovery, Jervis realized it was high time that she started designing clothes. The pull was so strong that she started up a homemade design and décor business in a partnership with her sisters.

Determined to show the world that it was possible to make aesthetic clothes that did not cost the planet a fortune, Jervis launched House of GAB from her home office in less than 10 months into LA. Embarking upon the spirit of strength, House of GAB boasts its mission: to master-craft eco-friendly clothing without compromising on style and design.

After 6 months of launching their business, they received praiseworthy exposure across

In an endeavour to chase adventure, fun and self-exploration, Jervis moved to Los Angeles where she landed upon a harsh sight of junk clothes made from cheap fabrics. These shoddy fabrics not only abused the Earth, but the people making them were also mistreated.

BUSINESSES & OPPORTUNITIES

Succeeding as a Solopreneur How to Dominate in the Gig Economy Without Ever Leaving Home By Olga Mizrahi

H

ave you been dreaming of leaving the daily grind behind and joining the millions of professionals taking a more flexible and higher earning path than many traditional home business owners? Millions just like you have taken the leap, becoming busy freelancers and active giggers, and you can too. Forget what you think you know about the gig economy. You don’t need to become an Uber driver, ferrying folks all over your city, to cash in. You can definitely start “living the dream” without ever leaving home. The gig economy — defined as project-based or on-demand services that can be provided by anyone — is an amazing force that normalizes all types of project and temporary work and changes the concept of the workplace. It’s pretty diverse, too. it includes temporary workers, contract workers, consultants, freelancers and solopreneurs. Where You Fit In How do you know when you’re officially part of the gig economy? Well, you’ll probably fit into one (or more) of these categories: A. You work for an employer by day and have moonlighting gigs on the side B. You get paid (by a business or individual), but tax is not deducted from your gross payment C. You earn money from various sources on a project-by-project basis D. You cannot currently claim anyone as an “employer” The secure jobs of the last century are disappearing, which means that, sooner or later, most people are going to have to learn how to be their own bosses. Luckily, it’s entirely possible to make a career out of freelancing. It’s one thing to make a living doing odd jobs — but if you’re climbing up a professional ladder of your own design (where each job is a wrung that’s either going to hoist you up or send the whole thing crashing down), that’s another thing entirely. A good freelancer takes a page from the entrepreneurial atlas. She isn’t lost in the sea of instability, waiting for the U.S.S. Corporate to throw her a raft. The

best freelancer grabs some driftwood, picks a direction, and starts kicking. Where to Start The easiest place to start is online. Digital marketplaces (like Upwork and TaskRabbit) are essential for transitioning into the freelance way: they're easy to access, filled with built-in clientele, and put you just one email verification away from a new kind of life. Why not DIY (e.g. place an ad for your services on Craigslist)? Well, since they’re created by and for the digital revolution, peer-to-peer platforms offer a level of built-in security for the budding entrepreneur that you simply won’t find in the go-it-alone model. Although you might snag a potential client on Craigslist who’s willing to pay you $25 per hour to edit her novel, if you finish the job and she decides she doesn’t feel like paying, there’s nothing short of the small claims court system that can convince her otherwise. Fickle clients are a minefield for the inexperienced freelancer, and the stress of not being paid is sometimes more painful than not being able to find work at all. In that regard, the assurances of a third-party system sound like a dream.

“The secure jobs of the last century are disappearing, which means that, sooner or later, most people are going to have to learn how to be their own bosses.” A Guide to the Platforms There are countless sites and apps out there designed to hook up freelancers and those in need of their services. We’ll look at just a few to get you headed in the right direction. Keep in mind, in many cases, you can sign up for free just to get a feel for each site or app.

7 MARKETING TIPS FOR THE SOLOPRENEUR

What Kinds of Things You Can Do from Home When many of us think of gigging, we think of the “out and about” jobs, like deliveries, dog walking, ride sharing, caregiving and so on. But there are a host of things you can do that don’t require so much as putting on pants. Here’s a short list of things that might suit your particular at-home talents: ■

Virtual assisting, office admin, email handling, project management, vendor management and communications, research, data entry, online personal shopping, product sourcing, sales, line placeholding, brainstorming, translating, transcribing, copywriting, editing, proofreading, resume creation, online tutoring, test grading, social media posting, photo retouching, website design, website maintenance, programming, app development, blog optimization, digital file organization, party planning, event marketing, at-home doggie daycare, customer service, customer support, chat operator, selling in an online marketplace (e.g. eBay, Poshmark, Etsy, etc.), photography, voiceover, arts & crafts, pattern making, online dating assistance

That is where unique value proposition (UVP) comes in as a tool. It’s not about simply figuring out how to portray yourself to the outside world; it’s about pinpointing what makes you different enough and then carrying that message around boldly, wherever you go online. A unique value proposition communicates the special contribution you are able to provide to the market in a way that is markedly different from your competitors. A solid UVP is: ■

Not only does a complete profile listing give you an online presence within each directory, but profiles show up in search engine results as well. That’s exposure every solopreneur needs. LinkedIn, CrunchBase and My Google Business are the three most important to utilize.

2. Establish Brand Consistency Branding a business is no less important for solopreneurs than it is for large corporations. Using the same logo, motto and color scheme throughout online and printed advertising material builds a legitimacy in the minds of potential clients.

3. Make Use of Content Marketing

How to Compete Online No matter what speciality you deliver, going freelance makes you a business of one: you become the marketing director, PR representative, accounting lead, research team, and project manager of You, Inc. Therefore, you need to ask yourself the number one question that matters: Why choose you? To answer this incredibly difficult question, you must put yourself in the shoes of those doing the choosing and understand what unique skills and value you bring to the table that makes you irresistible. In terms of strengths, timing, and sometimes, pure dumb luck, what makes you the BEST choice? What are you willing to do that others cannot or are unwilling to do?

As a solopreneur, you have to make time for marketing your business. After all, if people don’t know about you, all the hard work in the world won’t turn you into a success. So, how can you get a handle on marketing as a solopreneur? Follow these seven tips to make your marketing time count.

Online content marketing is a big term that means giving your clients information they can use. To make effective use of content marketing, the information you provide must be related to your business in some way. For example, if you sell carpet, present how-to articles on your website about carpet stain removal or offer home decorating tips. Make sure content is relevant, easy to understand and most of all — informative.

in the competitive marketplace ■ ■

A directive to convey to yourself and potential clients A different message that is unique to you and you alone An explanation about why you truly stand apart

The bottom line is that if you can clearly communicate your difference, then there will be some sort of impression formed in the mind of the client doing the choosing. If you can’t communicate a distinct difference, something worse happens: there’s no impression formed. You’re ignored; you’re an afterthought. Get Ready to Succeed in the Gig Economy Now that you understand the gig economy,

A blog is your chance to let your personality shine through. Personal stories about how you came up with your business idea, what it means to you, client benefits and up-todate industry news are all acceptable blog topics.

Guest posts on other websites give you exposure you wouldn’t necessarily achieve. Guest posts also provide a way to solidify your expertise in your field. Look for websites that offer industry-related information and ask about writing a guest post. Many sites encourage expert guest posts and include writer guidelines and submission information.

6. Effectively Use Social Media Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram are extremely useful for building online communities of loyal customers. If your business has a visual element, Pinterest and Instagram are also important. To use social media successfully, make time each day to read, answer and introduce posts. Make it fun for your followers — perhaps conduct contests or ask how they spent their weekend. Then read and respond.

7. Consider Outsourcing Hire a freelancer to design a logo. Commission a writer to help you with content. Outsourcing doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It simply means you know it’s best to let the pros handle important elements of your marketing strategy. Outsourcing gives you the time to do what you do best — run your solopreneurship! where to find work online, the kinds of things you can do from home, and how to stand out while selling your services, you’re ready to take the big leap and succeed from the comfort of your own home. Don’t let your location limit you. There are thousands of creative things you can do right where you are. Pick a few and start putting yourself out there. You might need to under-bid a few jobs while you get your foot in the door, but with some patience and perseverance, you’ll be gigging regularly in no time. 5 Ways Leaders Can Achieve Personal Wellness and Inspire It in Others Team members will be more inclined to focus on their own well-being if they see the leadership team making it a priority. It’s better for the entire company when everyone strives to be physically and mentally fit. Follow these five guiding values for personal wellness: ■ Breathe. On any given day we are going to experience moments of stress. Focus on taking a few long, slow breaths to help calm you down. ■ Move. Stretch at your desk and take time o nce an hour to get up and walk, even if it’s just to walk to somewhere else in the office. ■ Play. Children love to play, but adults forget they need to take time to play as well, even if it’s just a game of cards or charades. ■ Nourish. No matter how smoothly life is going, there will always be conflict with employees, so you should handle it directly, openly and immediately. ■ Replenish. Life gets hectic, so it’s important to set aside time for reflection, introspection, meditation or just plain quiet time. Commit to a Better Tax Prep Process To be better prepared next tax season, small businesses should implement the following processes throughout the year: ■

statement with the business’ accounting records, owners and managers will be able to ensure that they’re not missing any expenses while making sure the bank makes no mistakes. Keep personal and businesses expenses separate: This can prevent the owner from being held personally liable for all business’ debt and actions. Digitally save all business records: Today’s modern business technology lets owners and managers capture all important business records with their smartphone, eliminating messy, unorganized paper. Don’t go at it alone: Accountants and bookkeepers will be able to provide owners with an efficient tax prep process that can be applied throughout the year to ensure an easy tax season next year. 4 Reasons Overworking Is Overrated Chronic overwork can have very negative impacts on our overall quality of life. Here are four reasons overworking is overrated: 1. It can’t compensate for business flaws. Putting in another two or three hours a day, while continuing to use the same ineffective ways of doing things, won’t solve fundamental issues related to the company’s success. 2. It distracts from the big picture. Having too much to do often promotes tedium, taking away from valuable time that might otherwise be spent on thinking, creating, planning, or maybe just taking a breathe. 3. It leads to health problems. Numerous studies show that overwork and stress can result in all kinds of health issues. 4. It lowers performance levels. Fatigue and sleep deprivation make it hard to perform at a high cognitive level. Jeremy Greenberg Founder of Avenue Group Co-founder and CEO of Flyte Fitness www.FlyteFitness.com www.AveGroup.com

Be Heard Through the Clutter Have you ever sent an email — to your boss, colleague, client, sales prospect — and never got a response? It’s probably not that they are too busy to respond, it’s because they don’t want to respond Begin to reconcile your bank records: — put simply, your email missed the mark. By comparing transactions from a bank Perhaps your emails are long and confusing Collect receipts and invoices: By holding on to documents like customer invoices, debt collections and vendor accounts, small businesses will be sure they’re maximizing deductions and staying IRS compliant.

— are one continuous paragraph rather than brief sentences. Maybe your messages are so abbreviated they might as well be written in Morse code. Perhaps you include people who don’t need to be involved in the discussion. Poorly written emails jeopardize your influence. If your messages aren’t read, you can’t have influence. If you want to be heard through the clutter, consider how many emails your reader has received before yours. What can you do to make your message stand out from the rest? SUCCESS STORIES

Global Force of Entrepreneurs Computer Engineer Develops First Direct Sales Company Built Entirely on Blockchain By Lysa Allman-Baldwin

very successful entrepreneur has their own story — the highs and the lows experienced along the path from a spark of inspiration to the manifestation of their dream.

E

man in his mid-20s Kamran had not yet mastered the value of putting money aside for a rainy day. He lost everything and had to start over again at zero.

Atif Kamran is no different.

One day, after moving to London with only one suitcase containing all his possessions, he had secured a job interview across town. That’s when he was forced to put his feet, literally, to his prayers.

Born in Pakistan in 1979, the youngest of four boys, Kamran’s father played an integral role in his upbringing. “I’ve never known a more hardworking person than my father,” Kamran recalls. “We were middle-class, but he was very successful because he hustled day and night. I could see that at a very early age, which gave me very strong beliefs and core values that I still use today. One of them is that nothing comes without hard work.” Kamran went on to become a computer engineer and worked in a bank managing their computer department. A job from a training institute educating others on computer hardware followed, and not long thereafter exposure to the direct selling industry. “I was 21 years old, so young that I felt people weren’t taking me seriously, so I started wearing fake glasses and grew a mustache to look older!” laughs Kamran.“In the beginning, I didn’t know how direct selling worked, but I listened to the company founder who became my mentor. Whatever he said I did, and I learned a lot that helped me achieve incredible things in this industry.” Within three short years Kamran achieved the Diamond level, the top sales position in the company, earning over half a million U.S. dollars a year, all before the age of 25. “I tell people it doesn’t matter how young or old you are, how much you know, or if this is the first or fifth company you are working with,” he says. “If you work hard and do the right thing, you can become successful.” A real hard-knock lesson came when the company went out of business, and as a young

“After the interview, I found that I had run out of money for the underground train, so I had to walk home — about a 4-hour trek,” he says. “I was walking, tired and thinking, ‘How did I end up here that I don’t even have enough money to pay train fare?’ But then I started telling myself, ‘Hey! This is OK — go through this! One day you’re going to tell this story to someone who may be in this situation, and they’ll be inspired to keep going, even when things get rough.’” That was about 15 years ago and the rest, in many ways, is direct selling history. To date, Kamran has achieved: ■

Businessman of the Year in the United Kingdom by the British Muslim Awards

Technology Innovation Award by the Pakistan Achievement Awards

Digital Currency Industry Innovation Award by Canadian DSA

Vice President Distributor achievement for a Singapore based multinational direct selling company

Europe Region Training Manager for the largest nutrition and health care direct selling company in China Diamond Distributor achievement and Best Trainer Award for a UAE based multinational direct selling company

Kamran’s latest entrepreneurial venture is as President and Founder of MyTravelBiz (MTB), which he started with Geraldine Aquino, also the company’s Chief Executive Officer, in 2017. MyTravelBiz is the first direct selling company built on Blockchain, the distributed ledger system where information is permanently stored across a network of computers independent of each other.

Atif Kamran, Founder of MyTravelBiz

By marrying Blockchain with travel and direct selling, MyTravelBiz has revolutionized the travel industry and created a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the way direct sales works. Featuring the largest inventory of hotels, flights, car rentals and coming soon, holiday packages, the MyTravelBiz portfolio encompasses over 1 million properties, over 750 airlines, thousands of rental car locations, and is available in 32 languages and 21 currencies. In only the company’s first 200 days (reaching that milestone April 6, 2018), they have customers and Entrepreneurs representing over 41 countries. “This diversity allows us to offer the best global travel booking deals conveniently and affordably, and make travel accessible and convenient for everyone,” says Kamran, “and, by leveraging the power of blockchain technology, create life-changing opportunities for our entrepreneurs and the global community alike.” MyTravelBiz has three core values: Customers and Representatives First; Everyone is Born a Diamond; and Diversity is Worth Celebrating. “These core values form the basis of our integrity and commitment and guide every decision we make,” says Kamran. Unfortunately, Kamran lost his father at the tender age of 14. Yet those early life lessons continue to inspire him. “I always say that my dad did not leave us with anything; all he did was get his children educated so we could do well in our lives,” he says. “If I can use my story — and what I have achieved — to help other people do the same thing, that makes me proud. My dad would be proud too.” For more information about MyTravelBiz (MTB), see the company website at https://corporate.mytravelbiz.com. www.homebusinessmag.com

MARKETING & SALES

Heat Up Your Sales 10 Creative Ways a Home Business Can Boost Profits During the Warmer Season By Kristoffer Canimo

C

hristmastime may be the most profitable season for almost any type of business (unless yours sells Easter eggs), but that should not stop your marketing and sales team from doing their best this summer. In fact, marketing should always be year-round as it adapts to the “flavor” of each season. No matter what the season is, home business owners should always give what their customers want and need. Good thing is, we’ve done the work for you. Here are some of the best marketing and sales tips you can implement to engage your customers this summer and boost your profits: 1. Take Advantage of the Weather and Do an Outdoor Sale It’s a laidback season and most people like to walk around in the sun. Take advantage of this season and host a sale right outside your door. If your house is located in an area where a lot of people pass by, jackpot! Create big, noticeable posters that scream sale and watch people gather around your products. Don’t forget to prepare big umbrellas and covers in case it rains in the summer. 2. Offer Free Barbecues and Drinks If you have a space outside your shop big enough for a grill, offering potential customers a nice stick of barbecue is a great way to lure customers in. Who doesn’t want free food, anyway? Don’t forget to also provide napkins and tissues they can use to wipe off their oily hands before touching any of your products. 3. Start a Social Media Contest Nowadays, your content can go viral faster than you can imagine. If your business has something to do with teenagers and youth, your best bet in marketing is to host a social media contest. You can get started by asking your Facebook audience to post a photo of their favorite product from your summer collection and tag five friends who’d look good in it (if your products are clothes, that is). This way, your website gets organic traffic and your brand gets increased visibility during the season. 4. Redesign Your Website to Match the Season You can also get started by sprucing up your site to match the summer season. Even if it’s

30

Home Business Summer 2018

10-41_HBM_SUMMER2018.indd 30

®

not relevant to your business, you can add images of the sun, beaches and coconut trees around your website. If flowers are too far from what your business does and sells, you can simply and temporarily add a flower on your logo to reflect that you’re embracing the season. Changing your website’s color palette to something bright and in line with summer in the meantime would also work just as well. 5. Redecorate Your Store If your business has a physical store, giving it the summer vibe won’t be difficult. Draw your potential customers closer by giving your shop a splash of bright and vibrant colors and decorating it with lots of things that are easily associated with summer.

“You can publish an ad in a newspaper based in your community; it’s a great way to connect with your local targets.

6. Discounts! More Discounts! No matter the season, discounts work every time! You can add a popup on your website that says: “Deals that save you money this summer” or “Best Summer Deals!” While this works if your products are on your website, you should also consider sharing these on your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts whenever you can. 7. Humanize Your Brand Be brave and post a photo of your team lounging under the sun, drinking lemonades (or beers!) on a weekend night. Your customers will appreciate this and it will remind them that you are human as well. This has time and again been proven to strengthen a brand’s connection to their audience. 8. Seek Inspiration from the Weather If your business’s social media accounts have a considerable number of followers, you might want to post a little more often this season and take inspiration from the sunny, beautiful weather for your entries. Remind people that summer is all about fun and beach getaways and seasonal depression is slowly drifting away. Incorporating this positive feeling into

Discounts work regardless of the weather. your Facebook and Instagram posts and tweets will promote a healthy brand awareness and recognition. You’ll be known as the brand that spews up positivity on social media, and that’s not a bad thing! 9. Consider Advertising Locally If your business only operates at the local level, you might want to advertise locally. You can publish an ad in a newspaper based in your community; it’s a great way to connect with your local targets. There are also a lot of events during the summer, and it’s highly recommended that your business takes part in them. If you are in the food industry, make sure that you sign up to be one of the concessionaires at a local music festival. Don’t forget to print out flyers and business cards so people know who you are and what you do. 10. Start a Loyalty Program Starting a loyalty program is probably one of the best things you can do to boost your overall sales while rewarding repeat customers. The smartest time to start this is during summer when everyone has cash to spare. Providing small and exclusive discounts for everyone who stops in on a usually slow day (like Wednesday or Thursday) is a good way to attract customers and boost your profits. These are just ten of the best marketing and sales strategies you can do this summer for your home business. If you have other tips in mind, don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know. Workspace Revamp! 4 Strategies to Straighten Up Your Home Office and Boost Your Business's Productivity This Summer

T

here is no better time to get your home office organized than during the summer. While it’s rather warm and sunny outside, and every day seems like a beautiful day for a lazy stroll in the park, summertime is perfect for home business owners as this season is considered to be a slow one compared to others. Let this guide show you how helpful these simple summer tune-up tips can be for your home office and your business operations. Here are some of the ways home business owners can make the most out of this rather slow season: 1. Improve Your Website Experience Whether your business should have a website or not is already out of question. In this day and age, big and small businesses must have their online presence in case potential customers would like to send in their inquiries before making a transaction or availing your services. A good way to improve your business’s website is to add a customer service chat box somewhere on the webpage. This is a place where customers — potential and returning ones — can contact you with questions and comments about your services. This is a great way to show them that their opinion is being valued. The information you will eventually gather from this simple chat box can become a basis for what needs to be adjusted or changed in how you do your business, therefore improving your customer service experience in the long run. 2. Consider Moving Your Business to the Cloud Nowadays, it’s become a norm rather than an exception to run your business operations in the cloud. This means home business owners can easily and effectively run their businesses and access any of their data anywhere and at anytime, sometimes just by using their mobile phones. Moving your business to the cloud provides you with many benefits. For instance, since your files are in the cloud (you do not have to worry about spilling coffee on a very important contract!), collaboration becomes so much easier. Multiple members of your business can access a file at the same time. This means that

providing feedback and suggestions becomes instantaneous compared to a usual office setup where you’d need to check everyone’s availability to set up a meeting. Your finances are also available in real time. There are cloud-computing services that can provide you with automatic and real-time bank reconciliations that get the data straight from financial institutions, which means you will know how good your business is doing or when it needs to step up its game. While there are a lot of cloud-computing storage companies that offer this at a premium, there are still some out there that give limited storage options if you’re still on the fence regarding whether the cloud is something that your business needs.

“A good way to improve your business’s website is to add a customer service chat box somewhere on the webpage.

3. Declutter Your Workspace While some can work well with a cluttered desk, it’s been found that a clean workspace makes it easier and faster for many people to do their jobs. This is why decluttering a home office desk is a must-do for every home business owner during the summer. You can start by reducing your office items on and around your desk. Do you really need to have eight picture frames on your table? Anything that doesn’t concern what your job entails should go. You should consider removing photos, books, art supplies that don’t get used and food. If you really have a lot of important things that need to be in close proximity at all times, consider using drawers. Organize your files and folders according to their importance. This way, those documents you won’t need until five in the afternoon do not sit on your desk and will not distract you. It would also help to label each drawer with what is inside, so if you’re the forgetful type, you do not have to go through each of them just to find that monthly report.

Move your business to the cloud. 4. Clean Up Your PC Since most of your work is done through your personal computer, make sure that it’s performing at its peak. Cleaning up your desktop includes scanning your system for viruses and hardware/software issues. If you think your PC is no longer working the way it used to, consider getting some help from a tech guy and upgrading your unit. Make sure that your applications are also set to receive automatic updates. Creating a filing system also works wonders. Keep related files together in one folder so when it’s time that you need one, you won’t have a hard time finding it in a sea of files and folders and photos of cats. It’s also a good time to back up your files, whether through a cloud-based setup or through a hard drive, so you don’t have to worry about losing any important data. Lastly, learn to love your email inbox. Declutter your mailbox by going through each one and making sure the important emails get a response. Make it a habit to check your inbox before the day ends and do not leave anything unread so your emails don’t pile up. Going through 1,000 emails isn’t really how you’d like to spend your summer, right? These are just some of the ways home business owners can dedicate their time during summer to improve their home office setup. On the Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business to New Heights By Andi Simon, Ph.D.

Five Keys to Powerful Business Relationships: How to Become More Productive, Effective and Influential

When a business hits a point where big ideas have stalled, sales are in a slump and a business feels unable to keep up with quickly evolving trends, the emerging practice of “corporate anthropology” can help. Prevent Cash Flow Calamities Bookkeeping Tips for the Savvy Home-Based Business Owner By Lee Murphy

MONEY

W

hen you are working hard on your home business, it is easy to think the finances will work themselves out, only to suddenly find it was an illusion… you come in one day to find there is no cash in the bank to pay suppliers, any workers and the taxman! It is easily done, especially if you are a busy owner who only has time to judge success by a quick glance at the bank account and the monthly sales total. But, in home-based businesses, particularly those where owners are not particularly strict about separating business money and their personal drawings, it is easy for money to be spent that is going to be needed in the future, particularly at short notice. Too often busy owners lose sight of the adage that “turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, but cash is reality”. A focus only on working and sales, without checking profit and particularly cash, sadly causes the sudden and undeserved demise of many small businesses. Don’t wait for trouble. Here are three essential tools to ensure your home-based business is not derailed through an unexpected cash crisis

In addition to having a “cash flow forecast with some accurate figures for likely future tax, you need to have a business account to help separate personal and business money.

and your business are not heading for some unexpected financial rocks. But too few small businesses do it, and many only do it once or twice a year, usually only once they have started to get into trouble. In fact, you should update it monthly at a minimum, and perhaps even weekly in difficult times. If you use cloud accounting software, then there should be cash flow tools available. Pandle will give you real-time cash reporting and forecasting so that you can easily spot current or future cash flow problems and react. Make sure your forecast includes not just your suppliers, but particularly big lumpy payments like your annual corporation tax, quarterly VAT and large ad hoc payments. These are particularly important, because if you have not set aside money, you may well not be able to pay them. A regular cash flow forecast is particularly important because most businesses that go under are not making losses. Instead, they simply run out of cash and cannot pay the money they owe. Here are three particularly important areas to make sure you factor into your cash flow. 1. Beware of Your Drawings! The big problem that afflicts many smaller businesses stems from owners viewing the money in the business account as their own money and continually dipping into it for life’s luxuries! The

end result of this is a big tax bill down the line, but the money needed has already been spent! If this sounds like you, action is needed before it ends in disaster. In addition to having a cash flow forecast with some accurate figures for likely future tax, you need to have a business account to help separate personal and business money. Perhaps look into getting one of the low-cost online ones now available if you are worried about extra costs. Also, set money aside in a business deposit account so you can meet the large bills when they inevitably arrive. 2. Beware of Your Accountant! This may seem an odd thing for an accountant to say! However, I have heard many stories from small businesses who have been told about the need to pay a large tax bill at the last moment by their accountant. Too often there are such misunderstandings between accountants and their small clients. The accountant thinks they are there just to do the calculations, but the business owner thinks they are there to troubleshoot financial problems. Don’t fall into this trap. Have a conversation with your accountant about what taxes will be due and when over the coming year, put it in your cash flow forecast and start setting money aside for it regularly.

34

Start setting money aside for taxes in advance.

The Importance of a Cash Flow Forecast I know from my own experience with a previous business I set up the importance of getting the bookkeeping right, and the problems that occur when you don’t.

3. Beware of Your Customers! Customers can cause the sudden demise of home businesses in several ways, and only occasionally is it through having too few of them!

Timely bookkeeping allows you to create a chart showing, for the next year, how much money you will be paying out and how much money is coming in each month. It is called a cash flow forecast, a term you will have heard, and it is the number one way for ensuring you

A big problem is having those that are so slow to pay it creates major cash flow problems in your business. For instance, if a customer takes three months to pay an invoice from the date the work starts, you will have paid out for three months’ of costs, VAT and everything

Five Things to Consider When Choosing an Accountant hot on getting paid “onBeing time means that if a customer goes under your losses are minimized.

else before you get the payment. Even if it is a profitable customer, that is a big burden on your finances! Other signs you are heading for trouble from your customers include: Any customers where arrears have built up is a danger sign. If you can’t get payment in advance, train them to pay on time and be hot on chasing overdue invoices. In fact, it is best to send a nice reminder the week before it is due! Again, if you use bookkeeping software, much of this can be automated so a computer does the nagging. Being hot on getting paid on time means that if a customer goes under your losses are minimized. Just look at Carillion, which had huge arrears which magnified the harm to its suppliers immensely. Where customers build up big arrears, seriously think about whether you can afford the risk of working with them. Being dependent on one or two big customers (or channels if you sell through Amazon, for instance) for much of your income is particularly dangerous. It is an easy position for small businesses to get locked into having won a big customer and then spending all their time looking after them, only to find things change down the line and all your sales suddenly stop. Use your cash flow forecast to model what would happen if you suddenly lost them. Could your business survive? Master Your Bookkeeping and You Master Your Financial Destiny Bookkeeping, you will be pleased to hear, is not rocket science and if you have the savviness to run your own business then you can regularly use basic tools, like the cash flow forecast and analysis of the profitability of your contracts, to ensure your business is not, inadvertently, being pulled by your customers towards the financial rocks. With the wide range of tools available online, many of them free, it has never been easier for business owners to master this vital area. Lee Murphy is an accountant and founder of cloud bookkeeping software Pandle (www.pandle.com) which is particularly aimed at the self-employed, home and microbusinesses.

N

ot only can a professional doing your books save you money on taxes, but they are also far less likely to make costly mistakes. And above all, with the time they save you, they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. Once you’ve made the decision that it’s time to get some professional help, the next step is choosing the right accountant for you or your business. With that in mind, here are five things to think about before handing over your books.

Fees Unless you’re a thriving business or large corporation, you’re unlikely to be able to take on staffed accountants, which means you are more likely to be looking at hiring a firm or individual on a contractual basis. And how much you pay for these skills is important. Your accountant’s fees need to fit nicely with the size and scale of your business and budget. Most people calculate fees in one of two ways. One is to pay per hour for the work carried out. This is beneficial as it means if you have a quiet period you only pay for the small amount of services required. The other is to pay a fixed rate. This means that you get the accountancy services you need, and the rate remains fixed. So even if there’s more work than expected, you don’t end up paying more.

Qualifications Any accountant you employ should be qualified. Accountancy is a highly skilled profession that involves years of study and training. It’s well worth checking the credentials of any firm or individual you employ. In the UK, there are different levels of accountancy qualifications. While it is possible to study accountancy at university at degree level, a vocational qualification is still required. This may be incorporated into the degree course, but it is worth checking to make sure they have the right credentials. As a general rule, the more letters your accountant has beside their name, the better. But your accountant should also ideally be familiar with your line of business.

Familiarity It’s worth asking about the accountant’s current clients or past experience. If they are familiar with your services or business model then this will certainly help. Different industries have their own set of standards regarding taxation. If an accountant is experienced in this field, they may be able to maximise your return to your advantage. Finding an accountant who is a good fit, and who can relate to your business, is an important thing to consider when making your choice.

Availability You need to establish exactly who will be working on your accounts. If employing a firm, will it be the senior partner with all the reassuring letters after their name or will it be the new junior team member, fresh out of university with no real-world experience? You also need to know that your accountant is available as and when you need them. You require an accountant you can get hold of when you have a pressing matter.

Personal Preference As a businessperson, you probably already know that a lot of success comes from intuition. You work with and do deals with people you trust, like or feel comfortable with. While any transactions should be professional, if you can relate at a personal level and have a good understanding then this will help your relationship. It’s worth taking the time to meet any prospective accountants before agreeing to work with them. And if you feel intimidated or uncomfortable, try another option. Banking Solution for Cannabusiness Husband-Wife Team Launches Company That Services All Segments of Multi-Billion Dollar Marijuana Industry By Bill Kenrick

N

athaniel Gurien, his wife Diane, and their two BFFs (Best Feline Friends) commenced their home-based financial consulting business after Nathaniel attended the November 2015 MJBizCon marijuana business conference in Las Vegas, where he enjoyed an intense one-week introduction to this exciting new industry. From the beginning, Nathaniel was well advised to apply his existing professional and entrepreneurial skills and experience, and realized there were many opportunities to participate in addition to growing, selling or manufacturing marijuana, e.g. consulting, marketing, real estate, finance, etc. He knew that like many new industries, it needed the same comprehensive support and infrastructure. They converted the recreation room in their NYC apartment into a fully functional two-person office, with Nathaniel’s wife handling administrative duties, him handling networking,

R&D, marketing and client relations, and their felines setting their work pace. Most U.S. banks refuse to even open checking accounts for state-licensed and legal marijuana-related enterprises, and Nathaniel recognized that providing a substantive solution to this problem represented a potentially huge business opportunity. He pursued initiatives and sought guidance from many stakeholders from government, the industry, law enforcement, bankers and compliance experts, and earlier this year built sufficient innovative infrastructure to begin offering their solutions to a needy industry. They were successful in raising an initial ‘seed-round’ of financing to launch a newly branded company: FINCANN, and proceeded to construct the basic framework of a new operating company — incorporation, website, URL registrations, accounting, trademark filing, etc. Now they have several dozen client referral partners and are opening accounts and

continuing to build their banking and merchant processing & electronic payment network to offer top-notch service to their clients. One of their most cost-effective methods of acquiring clients and access to resources continues to be networking at trade conferences and local meetups. Now Nathaniel not only attends marijuana business conferences but is obliged to keep current by going to banking, blockchain and crypto conferences as well. Nathaniel says, “If one is a natural and disciplined self-starter who can set and meet goals and milestones, then a home-based business can be satisfying and successful.” Visit http://www.oriongroup.nyc/.

Supporting a Positive Body Image Entrepreneurial Criminal Defense Attorney Solves Bra Fit Issues with the Bra Bridge Invention By Alicia McCarthy

or a long time, Judith Samson faced many issues with her bras and chest size. The criminal defense attorney and mom of three was a 36D and in addition to being insecure about her size, it also affected her posture and she was tired of experiencing too much bouncing. She then decided to take matters into her own hands and invented a solution to help with her body and related self-confidence issues: the Bra Bridge bra accessory.

in, up, and forward, offering support in the process. Samson’s main customers are women with a larger bust size who want to feel more confident in whatever they wear. Samson uses public relations efforts to market to this demographic and has been successful in generating press in both local and national publications. “Press placements offer third-party credibility and an outside opinion that consumers trust,” Samson says.

Bra Bridge’s mission is to help women feel more confident by improving the way their bra functions. The issues ladies have with their bras vary as much as the different shapes and sizes breasts come in: an excess of side drift, gravity, too much bouncing, not enough cleavage, etc. The simple, effective, and inexpensive Bra Bridge is a handy bra hack that fixes these issues and helps women feel more confident in every outfit! The Bra Bridge is a clip that attaches to both bra cups and pulls everything

Samson still practices law during the day and works on Bra Bridge in the evenings from her home. According to Samson, the top advantage of working from home is being able to spend time with her family. “They enjoy helping by fulfilling orders, putting boxes together, etc.” Samson says. “I am fortunate they can witness my passion and determination. I have taught them that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.”

So far, Samson says that her biggest business achievement was getting the product to move beyond the concept stage and delivered to market. Since its launch, Bra Bridge has exploded in popularity and Samson has even bigger plans for the future: “I hope Bra Bridge is a household name in three years,” she says. “Just like most women have heard of Spanx, I truly hope Bra Bridge is similar.” Visit https://brabridge.com/.

8 Strategies for International Online Selling Success

H

ere are strategies for selling internationally that you can implement in order to boost your odds of success.

1. Choose an Internationally Established

Online Marketplace

speak the language and researching the competition, so you can set more attractive prices.

4. Research Applicable Laws and Regulations

Entering the global market in the 21st century doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With the surge in popularity of online marketplaces like Amazon, Etsy, and eBay, you can simply establish a seller account and begin creating listings for each of the products that you want to sell and ship internationally

There are import, export and customs laws that will affect your ability to distribute certain products abroad, and there are also taxes, duties, and other fees that you may need to consider. There could also be environmental regulations, privacy and security measures that need to be met, and packaging, safety, and labeling requirements

2. Identify and Select the Right Markets for Your Business

5. Remove the Headache of International Shipping

What sells like hotcakes at home may not be so popular abroad. So, you need to consider not only language barriers, but also cultural differences, political and economic policies, and buying preferences before choosing the inventory that you will promote abroad

If you’re using Amazon to sell your goods abroad, you can sign up for FBA and FBA Export, which will determine the exporteligible products in your inventory for you. FBA also lets you ship your inventory to the appropriate international fulfillment centers, so orders can be shipped to customers locally.

3. Adapt to Each Market’s Needs Once you’ve done your research and determined what markets you’d like to enter, it’s time to adapt to, and meet, their needs. Consider translating your product listings, hiring customer service reps who

6. Get–and Stay–Competitive Research your competition and its pricing on comparable products. Then consider your costs, from production and labor to marketing and distribution, to set the

right rate that will ensure the highest profit margins. Don’t forget to also factor in currency exchange rates, which can be volatile and require that you regularly adjust your pricing accordingly to ensure profitability.

7. Focus on Customer Retention Provide high-quality products at great prices with fast shipping. Encourage customers to join your mailing list or follow you on social media and reward them for shopping with you and referring their friends. Again, a service like Amazon FBA can help you get the job done efficiently.

8. Promote, Promote, Promote Purchase sponsored posts on marketplaces like Amazon to ensure your products show up on search results pages and relevant product pages. You can also encourage customers to write product reviews, or you can work with influencers and purchase ads on social media. And you can even set up promotions, special deals, and contests to generate interest and interaction from customers. r. Castaños didn’t always know she’d be a therapist, but she did see early on how trauma and pain could shape a person’s life. This led her to become active in making a change for people in communities all over the world. Her passion led her to start MovingOn, the first interactive program designed to help people overcome heartbreak. MovingOn is designed for people who are struggling to get past the end of a relationship — Dr. Carolina Castaños, Ph.D. is shifting the way we think about love and relationships. By bringing our focus back to the self, Dr. Castaños is helping men and women overcome their past trauma in order to heal triggers and toxic patterns in relationships, and most importantly, lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Launched in 2018, MovingOn is a 14-week program that teaches people how to remove the blocks holding them back from living their best lives. Dr. Castaños provides weekly videos from her home office. With 20 years of experience and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, Dr. Castaños is world-renowned for helping couples, families, and individuals heal from past wounds, and guiding them to establish safe, deeply connected relationships. Dr. Castaños also helps couples that are stuck in negative cycles with issues such as difficulties communicating, loss of passion, disconnection and infidelity. increasingly rely on their devices for news, sports, and shopping, I noticed an enormous void in the self-help arena as it relates to real doctors helping people cope with breakups,” says Dr. Castaños. “MovingOn is a carefully crafted, highly personalized and forward-thinking program that helps people acquire the tools necessary to move forward and heal from emotional wounds during and after a hard breakup.” Visit http://movingonhelp.com/ and http://drctherapist.com/. www.homebusinessmag.com
