Following the consultations, Remkes said that there is ‘a serious crisis of confidence’ in the authorities, not solely with regard to the nitrogen crisis. The next round of consultations will take place at the end of August. Written by Zuzanna Kuffel and recreation industries, which were already feeling the consequences of the drought in August.

On 26 July Remkes sent a letter of invitation to a wide range of farmers’ organisations to enter into a dialogue with the government about the interpretation of the tasks for nature, nitrogen, climate, water and the future of Dutch agriculture, emphasizing that ‘there is room for all ideas to realize the challenges ahead’. He added: ‘I see the talks as a turning point: working together to break the deadlock. The government has assured me that there is room for flexibility and that joint solutions are possible,’ said Remkes. The talks take place under the leadership of Remkes, in confidentiality and in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and/or the Minister for Nature and Nitrogen. Prime Minister Rutte will also be present at some of the meetings.

Level 2, the current tier of water shortage, can happen more often (there have been five cases in the last 22 years), but at its current state poses no risk to individual consumption and drinking water supply.

In fact, the ministry has no legal powers in the Netherlands to limit individual consumption (in contrast to other countries like the UK). By law, water companies have obligations to secure drinking water supply, and the government can only advice citizens to moderate their water use, as minister Harbers has done, by telling them to limit activities like car washing and garden watering.

Weather forecasts point to further warm, dry weather in the coming summer weeks, with water levels continuing to fall, according to KNMI meteorologist Marco Nolet. However, the government systems that have been put into place are said to guarantee that the consequences for citizens and industries are not as drastic as on past occasions, even if the drought becomes more severe. And there is still room for further action and policy implementation, such as a more efficient system for retaining, storing and releasing fresh water ahead of the summer months, which would ensure increased water reserves for drought scenarios.

In June 2022 the government sent two letters to the Lower House of Parliament (Tweede Kamer): the starting memorandum of the National Rural Area Programme and an initial perspective for agricultural entrepreneurs, which will be followed up in September 2022. The scope and impact of the task facing the government is outlined in these documents. Now the government wishes to continue working with the various parties involved about the implementation of these tasks. Senior statesman Johan Remkes was appointed to lead discussions with farmers on behalf of the government.

Talks began and will continue

Summer 2022 has been a particularly dry season in the Netherlands, taking place amidst intense heatwaves across the greater part of Europe and the ongoing global climate crisis. On 3 August, Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Mark Harbers declared a factual water shortage in the country, meaning that the demand for water had surpassed the supply. Due to the shortage, vital industries like agriculture and shipping are affected. As the crisis unfolds, the Dutch government is taking measures to assess and better deal with shortage situations, both in the present and looking into the future. In order to quantify the level of the drought, and to act accordingly, the National Water Distribution Coordination Committee has established since 2015 a classification system depending on water levels, evaporation and consumption. The shortages are classified into three possibilities: 1. Imminent water shortage, the first tier, which this year was in effect since 13 July; 2. Actual water shortage, as is in place at the moment, for the first time since the drought of summer 2018; and 3. National crisis, which is rare in the Netherlands and was only observed this century in 2003, when the energy supply is actually at risk.

offer enough. ‘The cabinet evidently needs more time to prepare,’ said Van der Tak, adding further conversation is necessary. ‘This is really a huge task for our families and our farms,’ he said, and emphasized that farmers expect the government to pick up the ball and run with it. In a statement published on 6 August, another organization called Farmers Defense Force claimed that Rutte ‘swept away the farmers’ handshake’ and that a lot needs to be done to restore trust.

Written by Juan Álvarez Umbarila

It is a different story for industries like agriculture and shipping, however, which were already affected by the first tier of water shortage. In order to establish water distribution priorities in case of droughts, the Water Shortage Management Team (MTW), composed by the government, water boards and several local authorities, uses a scale to hierarchize and distribute available water according to social and ecological needs. In this system, the first priority is given to peat dikes (that can break when dry) and natural environments, to protect them from irreversible damage such as salinization from overflowing sea water into the mainland. The second priority is given to drinking water and energy supply.

The talks started on 5 August. Remkes was joined by eleven farmers’ organisations, LTO Netherlands being the largest interlocutor. However, the talks left the farmers highly disappointed. Some threatened with new demonstrations.

Johan Remkes starts mediation with angry farmers

Sjaak van der Tak, leader of LTO, said that the first talks have yielded ‘too little at the moment”. In his view Rutte and the ministers involved ultimately did not

As the Dutch government is still trying to figure out the optimal solutions to the nitrogen crisis, consultations with several farmers’ organizations have begun. So far the talks have unveiled a lack of trust in the Nitrogenauthorities.in animal manure and chemical fertilizers is necessary to grow crops. As explained by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, when not fully utilized by plants, it can be lost from farm fields and negatively impact the air and downstream water quality. The two main forms of reactive nitrogen are ammonia and nitrous oxide. The first one mainly comes from agriculture and causes soil acidification.

Preparation and adaptation, then, will be crucial.

Planning and anticipating will thus have to become the central rule from now onwards, since severe droughts will be more and more common in the future. According to NOS meteorologist Gerrit Hiemstra, this extreme weather and extreme heat, associated with droughts, fires and salinization, will no longer only be “an image from the south of Europe, but also a reality here” in the Netherlands.

50% less nitrogen emissions by 2030 Despite being a small country, the Netherlands is Europe’s largest meat exporter and thus produces high amounts of nitrogen. In 2018 the European Court of Justice ruled that the Dutch government was failing to deal with the country’s high nitrogen emissions. In May 2019, the Council of State ruled that the government’s nitrogen strategy was insufficient in terms of EU directives. Since then, the Netherlands has been trying to work out new ways to address the crisis. The most recent nitrogen plan was unveiled on 10 June. The goal is to cut nitrogen emissions by 50% by 2030. In certain areas the reduction is supposed to reach 70%. As Christianne van der Wal, the Minister for Nature and Nitrogen, anncounced, the exact ways of reaching these goals will be worked out in the coming months. One of the measures has already been put forward and remains controversial: farmers will have to cut the number of livestock by a third to reduce nitrogen pollution from animal waste. This has sparked mass farmers’ protests. Remkes mediating the talks

July 2022. The maximum rent increase for households with incomes below the threshold is 2.3 percent. The monthly rent increase for high-income households is limited to 100 euros. Rent increases under regulated rental agreements were prohibited as of 1 July 2021.

According to Statistic Netherlands (CBS), the cost of all consumer goods and services increased by 10.3 percent in July compared to the same month last year. Inflation in June was 8.6 percent. The price increases for electricity and rent were the main causes of the inflation. For the first time since September 1975, the inflation rate is above 10 percent. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February, energy prices have been rapidly increasing in the Netherlands. This is brought on by the growing ambiguity surrounding the Russian gas supply. In July, the annual cost of electricity increased by 108 percent. Despite the temporary reduction in the energy VAT from 21 percent to 9 percent since last month, the rise was still higher than the 84 percent of June. Additionally, consumers saw an increase in supermarket costs. Food prices have increased by more than 12 percent since last year. Since 1996, CBS has released two distinct inflation rates, one based on the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) and one based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). In the Netherlands, consumer goods and services were 11.6 percent more expensive in July than they were in the same month a year earlier, up from 9.9 percent in June, according to the HICP. The CPI is calculated every month in comparison to the same month the previous year, and this rise is used to calculate inflation. The CPI displays the evolution of the cost of a selection of products and services as they were generally purchased by Dutch households. Thus, inflation of 10 percent in July 2022 means that prices for consumer goods are 10.3 percent higher than they were in July 2021, not 10.3 percent higher than they were in June 2022. Therefore, the 10.3 percent inflation rate in July is not an rise compared to the 8.6 percent inflation rate in June.

The cabinet has already chalked out a plan to relieve the pressure on the asylum chain, including the establishment of a second registration center next to the current one in Ter Apel. The State Secretary also reiterated that the situation would improve and people would no longer be sleeping on chairs. Several new reception centers with a high accommodation capacity (of at least 800 people) in locations such as The Hague, Delft and Voorschoten are in the pipeline.

Concerning the deplorable conditions, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) announced its decision to seek a legal ruling to ensure that the reception of asylum seekers meets the minimum requirements. The aid organization has warned the government to undertake decisive steps in order to combat the ongoing refugee crisis. Sadly, the situation has only fallen further below the humanitarian threshold. Hundreds of refugees have been sleeping in crisis emergency shelters on camp beds and chairs for several months, or even outdoors on the ground. These shelters even lack the most basic necessities such as basic food, clean sanitary facilities, privacy and protection from ever-changing weather

Historically, the Netherlands has been the melting pot of different civilizations and has been extremely active in addressing humanitarian crises, including the reception of refugees affected by various disasters worldwide.

The Ministry of Justice and Security agrees with the COA’s decision to go to court, showing concerns over a callous indifference among the municipalities to the sufferings of asylum seekers. State Secretary Eric van der Burg wrote a letter to parliament describing the situation as ‘unsustainable’. The Ministry has been searching for a sustainable solution for months, but is stumped by the municipalities’ unwillingness to provide shelter.

Inflation rises above 10 percent

But the Netherlands is not alone: inflation in the eurozone increased from 8.6 percent in June to 8.9 percent in July. A decrease is not yet on the cards, unfortunately. Written by Nicole Kerr also been formed, which will be led by the Ministerial Crisis Management Committee (MCCb). This would provide authorization to the committee to take measures on behalf of the cabinet to manage the crisis.

One solution is to ensure that those refugees who have received permission to stay (socalled ‘status holders’) must move from asylum seekers’ centers to social housing as soon as possible, so their places can be taken by new asylum seekers. However, this again requires the collaboration of municipalities, who are in charge of social housing. In the long term, people should be spread evenly throughout the country, so no municipality can escape its duty. A sustainable solution understands and appreciates the needs and problems of refugees in the Netherlands is a necessary step to continue the Dutch tradition of hospitality. Written by Parul Sachdeva

Additionally, the cost of food increased by 12.3 percent on average in July compared to the same month last year. Grain, dairy, plant-based oils, sugar and ice cream in particular have seen high price rises. In July compared to the previous month, the price of motor fuel increased less dramatically. The cost of motor fuel increased by 2.5 percent in July compared to the same month last year. The annual price rise in June was 35 percent. In July, the average price of a litre of Euro 95 at the pump was 2.21, compared to 2.35 euros in June. A litre of diesel cost 2.14 euros in June, but only 2.07 euros in July. Inflation was also seen in the rising cost of package holidays and banking services.

Theconditions.central government and municipalities are in a deadlock, questioning each other as to who is responsible for the ongoing crisis. The government wants to force municipalities to accept refugees and organize shelter for them, while most municipalities point out that the reception crisis is not the result of the refugee crisis but stems from political choices that have left the whole asylum system in complete Thedespair.COA also believes the problem has arisen due to the lack of decisive action on the part of the central government. It has expressed several cries for help in the last year, but all were in vain. Now it seeks the court’s interference in the matter because action is needed now. A court ruling will not

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic have a serious economic, social and political impact for the world, with many countries on the verge of collapse and refugees left scrambling for basic supplies. The Netherlands is not immune to the consequences of this refugee crisis. The overcrowded reception centers in various parts of the country are lacking basic resources such as food, showers and places to sleep. Even the Red Cross described the current situation as ‘inhumane’.

Dutch refugee organisations demand a sustainable solution to the asylum crisis

only bring change in the quality of supplies for refugees, but hopefully also increase the quantity of available places. The COA is currently finalizing the summons, which is to be sent in the coming month.

Advanced discussions have already paved the way for both new registration centers and housing in asylum seekers’ centers.

Compared to a year ago, energy in particular got more expensive. Energy costs have increased by 108 percent since July 2021. Inflation was also driven higher by housing rents. Preliminary data indicates that in July 2022, rents were 3.0 percent more than they were a year earlier. Compared to July 2021, when rent increases were on average 0.8 percent, this is a higher increase. The maximum rent increase for regulated rental agreements will be based on income starting on 1

the Chair of the Board, Heleen Vos, resigned from her position. She had vowed drastic culture change last year, but withdrew, disillusioned, immediately after the dinner. She stated she didn’t want to bear responsibility for behaviours that exceeded her boundaries. The Vice President also resigned, when it was reported to have given the speech calling women names. A new Chair, Annemijn Oskam, has now been appointed.

Apart from the change in leadership, some practices have been reconsidered. For example, the hazing of this year’s new members will be different: there will be no night activities and purposeless activities like keeping members awake unnecessarily. Extra supervision will be rolled out during the hazing period.

“Change is coming?” The Association has made changes in its leadership. First,

Even with the recent controversy, it seems like the Amsterdam Student Association is more popular than ever, as hundreds of new students showed up to register in the last week of July. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, lines were reported to be as long as ten meters. With physical registration being mandatory, many students showed up, all vying for just under five hundred new membership slots. And just like in previous years, it is safe to say that there are more registrations than available places. Controversy Still, the social norms of the Association have come (not for the first time) under scrutiny. During the 34th lustrum party in July, hundreds of members reacted with shock to sexually degrading statements made during speeches delivered at the men’s dinner. We will not repeat them here, but the statements were extremely derogatory and violent towards women. There were also some rather explicit acts performed on stage during the dinner. A large group of over 200 women present at the dinner left immediately and, the next day, wrote a public letter denouncing the behaviour of the Amsterdam’sspeakers.

One in eight Dutch Covid survivorssuffers from Long Covid

“Thanks to Lifelines, we have lung function tests from the past few years,” says Rosmalen. “We can compare the tests of people with Long Covid with tests from before they became sick. Thus, we can evaluate whether Covid has impaired lung function in all Covid patients or just in those who are suffering from Long Covid.”

Written by Lorre Luther

UMCG recently completed a study that looked at 13,000 people who live in the Northern Netherlands to determine how many people continued to suffer from medical issues months after recovering from Covid-19. According to their results, one in eight individuals - 12.7% of the study’s participants - suffered from Covid-19related physical issues for three months or longer after being infected with the disease. The most common complaints included shortness of breath, loss of smell and taste, chest pain, difficulty breathing and muscle aches.

The traditional student associations, including those in Leiden, Groningen and Utrecht, are usually important breeding grounds for those who will end up in important government and industrial positions. However, Crown Princess Amalia, who is starting her studies in Amsterdam this year, has decided not to become a member of the student association, after she had previously stated in her biography that she would like to join the association. The decision has come on the heels of the recent controversy.

Next on Rosmalen’s agenda is understanding why people develop Long Covid and determining how best to treat them, as there’s currently no science-based information about how to best manage Long Covid. “I’m recovering slowly,” says Jan van Hoek, a Long Covid patient, “but I don’t have any idea when you stop improving. And there’s no one who can tell me where this all goes, what I can expect. And that’s difficult.”

There are also plans in the works to study the lung function of Long Covid patients.

Individuals who never contracted Covid-19 also participated in the study. These subjects increased the precision of the results by acting as a control group, allowing researchers insight into other reasons individuals could end up with Covid-19-like symptoms. Common causes included respiratory issues related to changes in seasons and the development of new illnesses linked to pandemic-related lifestyle changes.

More than two years after the world went into lockdown to limit the spread of the virus that causes Covid-19, doctors are still learning about this constantly changing disease. While the disease causes few problems for many patients, particularly younger individuals, others end up with extensive physical damage even if they survive the initial infection. Worldwide there have been almost 582 million Covid-19 cases, a number that includes individuals who experienced mild symptoms as well as those who died after contracting the virus. Recently evidence has emerged suggesting that many who contract Covid-19 and survive actually end up suffering for long periods of time, with many never fully recovering. Doctors and patients refer to this as Long Covid. In the Netherlands, approximately one in eight people who contract Covid-19 end up with long-term health problems related to the disease, according to research results recently released by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

The study, published on 5 August in The Lancet, relied on data gathered as part of the long-term longitudinal Lifelines study, designed to document the health of the population in the Northern Netherlands in which UMCG has participated since 2006. Participants regularly answer questions regarding muscle pain, difficulty breathing and other physical ailments as part of the ongoing study. Because the university began gathering health data on the study’s subjects well before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers were able to use the information to specifically pinpoint changes related to Covid-19 infections. According to Judith Rosmalen, the research team was “able to very precisely determine if people really developed new complaints or if the complaints were present far earlier”.

Rosmalen ultimately hopes to improve the lives of Long Covid sufferers with the research she and her team are doing. “We hope that care for people who have Long Covid becomes much better,” she says.

NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 2022 | 9

Amsterdam Student Association registrations rise, undeterred by controversy

Thanks to the Lifelines project, an answer might be in sight. Participants in the study provided regular blood samples, which researchers can now use to evaluate levels of organ damage and long-term inflammation experienced by Long Covid sufferers. And the researchers intend to ask Long Covid patients enrolled in the study to participate in further testing. “We’d like to measure thyroid function, do exercise tests, evaluate autonomous nervous system function and run several other tests on a subsection of the Long Covid patients participating in the Lifelines study,” says Rosmalen.

mayor, Femke Halsema called the behaviour reprehensible and unacceptable and called for the association to provide a safe environment for the current and new members, especially women. After other controversies earlier in the year, Amsterdam University and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences had already decided to withdraw all grants, following abuse and intimidation during hazing last summer.

Amsterdam Association still popular Even with the controversy, it seems that the Association is attracting more members than available places. The question to ask is why cancel culture hasn’t reached its doors yet. Are Dutch students not fazed by an association with a track record of abuse and misogynistic behaviours? 19-year-old Gert said: “I don’t approve of what was said during the speeches, but that’s no reason for me not to join this association. I have two sisters and I don’t call them such names.” 18-year-old Fleur, who will be studying PPLE at UvA – the same course that Princess Amalia is taking –said she never hesitated to sign up. “Things are happening everywhere that shouldn’t happen. I really think that something is going to change, there is no other way,” Fleur seemed to stay hopeful about the future of the association. In fact, it seems that many who are hopeful to join the association see the benefits of joining the association. There are those like Gert, who want to become entrepreneurs and see the association as a place for meeting important contacts for future endeavours. Others see joining the Association as an opportunity to find housing, because the Associations owns many properties in the city. Yet others, like Fleur, want to make the most of their student days by being a part of such a vibrant association.

The basis of every interior design Look at what the space needs and be strict. Choosing something atypical often results in decisions that one quickly gets bored with. Every type of home – and even every type of room – has its own characteristic features. For example: does the room have a lot of natural light, or are extra light ornaments needed? With these character traits, a steady basis is established.

The advantages of hiring an interior consultant With a professional consultant, the search for an interior that suits the resident and the house gets a ‘start and a finish’. An interior stylist minimises choice overload, advises and guarantees the quality of the elements and ‘the big picture’. In the end this saves the client a lot of time. Robin: ‘Oftentimes, clients are young professionals or expats with a busy job and a family who do not have the time to fully focus themselves on decorating their new home. With a pragmatic approach, I make sure that my clients do not regret their decisions in the long run because they made a hasty or trend-sensitive decision.

A trend that is making a comeback is ‘Retro and Urban 80s and 90s’ with its bright accents, fun elements and bold statements. This trend is best applied in small pieces of furniture and accessories to avoid getting bored or the room becoming overwhelmingly chaotic. Of course, with trends it is always best to combine accents and elements to create your own style that fits the place.

The Netherlands Volleyball Federation (Nevobo), in cooperation with TIG Sports, will organise the Dutch part of the upcoming competition and both organisations are extremely looking forward to welcoming the 24 best female volleyball teams of the world to the impressive stadiums in Arnhem (GelreDome), Rotterdam (Ahoy) and Apeldoorn (Omnisport).

Trends in interior design Currently, three trends stand out in the world of interior styling. ‘Japandi’ is a combination of Japanese and Scandinavian design and brings tranquillity into the home, but also warmth. The austere furniture of the Scandinavian interior is combined with natural materials and colours with Japanese influences. In addition, all sorts of shapes and materials such as concrete, wood, linen and rattan recur in a Japandi interior.

From that point on, the tournament continues in a single elimination format, with the quarterfinals set to take place in Apeldoorn and Gliwice (Poland) on October 11.

The semifinals will be in the same cities on October 12 and 13, and the medal matches will be in Apeldoorn on October 15.

A total of 196 matches will be played to determine the new world champions. If you would like to cheer for the world’s best teams from 23 September through 15 October, please have a look for tickets for the World Championship at www.tickets.wkvolleybal.nl.

With simple yet beautiful items of good quality that fit the space, you can mix it up with small pieces of furniture and accessories for the next ten years without having to change the entire interior.’

Tips for putting together an interior In the world of interior styling, it’s easy to get lost in the many (temporary) trends, possibilities and choices. It is therefore especially important to make it a personal project. Robin: ‘Go out and explore! Both on online and offline media and save what appeals to you. This can be

Preparations are well underway to ensure an electric atmosphere for all athletes, spectators, sponsors and dignitary visitors, and the Dutch organising committee is delighted to work together with many relevant stakeholders, including the embassies of the participating nations, to achieve these ambitions.

Reigning champions Serbia will try to defend the title they won in 2018, while the United States will be looking to repeat their 2014 victory and unify their Olympic and world titles. Other past world champions set to take part in this year’s edition are Japan (1962, 1967, 1974), China (1982, 1986) and reigning VNL champions Italy (2002).

How do you style a house for sale and why is home styling so important when presenting a house? When the house is soon to be sold, your personal touch in the interior has to make room for emphasising the opportunities of the space. In that case, it is opportune to present the house as spacious and neutral as possible, with a touch of personality.

‘You don’t get a second chance at a first impression, so don’t forget the entrance!’ When potential buyers come to view the house, the entrance hall is the place where they virtually decide whether they can see themselves coming home here. So try to show a neat, attractive look there as well. That way you can be sure that viewers will not forget the house easily.

From 23 September to 15 October, 2022, the 19th staging of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship will take place, contested by the senior women’s national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and the Netherlands and Poland are acting as dual hosts for this world-class sporting event.

The first ten days of the event will feature the first phase of the tournament. The 24 qualified teams will be split into four pools, hosted in Arnhem, as well as in Gdańsk and Łódź in Poland. After each team completes its fivematch schedule, the four best-ranked squads in each pool will move forward to the second phase. Played across six days, from October 4-9, in Rotterdam and Łódź, the second phase will see the 16 remaining teams form two groups. Each team will play only four matches, against teams they did not face in the first phase, and again the four best in each pool will move forward.

Furthermore, and as an addition to the first trend, we see a lot of ‘green’ in the designs. Organic shapes and materials are used, and flowers and plants are given a prominent role in the room. Besides the aesthetic aspect, the health benefits are also a big pro.

Gelderland welcomes the World Gelderland is one of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands and is well known as a great location for sport. The province has fantastic venues for sport, with the Papendal National Olympic Training Centre as the absolute highlight. With Apeldoorn and Arnhem as two of the enthusiastic host cities, many of the matches at the Women’s World Championship in 2022 will take place in Gelderland. In addition, all 24 participating teams of the World Championship will stay in one of the beautiful municipalities of Gelderland.

Potential buyers should be able to imagine themselves living there, but it should also be visible that someone is living there now. After all, it is not a standard model home but a home with an occupant and its own story. Of course, the advice is still to neutralise big eye-catchers.

Following the designation of the Galapagos Islands as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, Ecuador implemented a series of local measures to reduce the impact of tourism, fishing, and the activities of the local Notwithstandingpopulation.

The Government of Ecuador has, for instance, requested Oceans Finance Company (OFC) to assist by providing long-term, large-scale financing for the management of the existing and expanded reserves, the improvement of fisheries management at both artisanal and commercial levels, as well as the enhancement of the ecosystem to contribute to climate change adaptation. The economic structure is still under negotiation with several partners, financial institutions, and stakeholders but the basic concept is to create a fund for the protection and administration of the newly expanded marine reserve in ToGalapagos.summarise, and conclude, Ecuador is working diligently to preserve and take care of this magical natural heritage site for new generations to come. Nevertheless, these initiatives require collective action at a global level. It is for that reason, that Ecuador invites you to participate in the efforts to protect these unique islands.

It is for that reason that investment and availability of international financial resources for environmental conservation is extremely necessary. Conserving the Galapagos Islands is a critical goal which demands critical resources for research, technology, and alternatives to harmful activities. Only through well-funded initiatives can the desired effectiveness in terms of sustainability and environmentalism be reached.

Leadership in Environmentalism

AS A RESULT of more than 80 years of efforts to protect the Galapagos Islands, it makes sense to associate this unique archipelago off the coast of Ecuador with environmentalism. Indeed, pursuit of this objective has brought together a consortium of actors, all with the shared aim of protecting the terrestrial and marine ecosystems which make the Galapagos Islands Itexceptional.isworth

Ecuador, conscious of the important responsibility it has for this biodiversity, is contributing to a number of initiatives aimed at tackling these core challenges. For climate change, for example, several legislative and policy objectives have been set to reduce greenhouse gases by 2050. “Ecological Transition” as it is referred to, was declared by President Guillermo Lasso of the Republic of Ecuador on 28 September 2021. This policy encompasses a number of measures which are being implemented to achieve sustainability in Ecuador and thus improve the ecological footprint of our society. To that end, on 1 November 2021, at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), held in Glasgow, United Kingdom, President Lasso announced that Ecuador was expanding the existing Galapagos Islands marine reserve by an additional 60.000 square kilometres. This added space is principally across the Cocos Ridge towards Costa Rica, which is an important migration route for species like hammerhead sharks and leatherback turtles, among many others, some of them endangered. On the very next day, the Presidents of Ecuador, Panamá, Colombia, and Costa Rica announced their intent to create a large marine corridor between the four countries, by extending and joining their current protected marine areas. As concerns the expansion of the marine reserve of Galapagos, an Official Decree was issued in January of 2022. Importantly, it merits mentioning that the aforementioned expansion was advised and supported by the scientific community, the fishing sector, and the local population. With this new expansion, the Galapagos marine reserve protects almost 200.000 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean and its marine life. The waters around the Galapagos are at the convergence of several cold and warm marine currents present in the Pacific Ocean, which by virtue of their interaction create an ideal setting for a variety of marine life to congregate and exist. Protection and expansion of this area was thus of strategic interest for Ecuador, as environmentalism forms a fundamental state policy. It is therefore all the more relevant that the marine reserve expansion represented a critical implementation of this policy, particularly by virtue of its protection of marine life and the management of commercial fishing within the jurisdiction of Ecuador. Indeed, the preservation of marine life and the management of balanced and sustainable fishing activities are equal partners in securing a future for the Galapagos Islands.

To elaborate further on this point, and on the subject of Ecuador’s leadership in environmentalism, it is of specific importance to refer to the fact that Ecuador is leading discussions in the elaboration of a legally binding instrument to address global plastic pollution in the environment, within the United Nations Framework. All these actions taken separately may appear unrelated but together form a crucial aspect of Ecuador’s foreign policy as one of the most ecologically biodiverse countries in the Moreworld. action and change will always be needed.

these efforts, protection from serious threats, such as climate change, invasive species, increased human presence and illegal fishing, to name a few, is a complex and multidimensional challenge for local authorities, as well as for the Government of Ecuador at large. While any natural world heritage site is subject to these risks, the Galapagos Islands are particularly vulnerable to irreparable harm due to their delicate ecosystems and geographical position. It is important to mention that endangered species which migrate frequently between protected and international waters are especially vulnerable to indiscriminate fishing by large commercial vessels operating beyond the jurisdiction of Ecuador, within international waters.

The Galapagos Islands:

Nevertheless, tourists and consumers have an important role to play in the protection of the Galapagos and other natural heritage sites. Initiatives that can be taken include the fostering of sustainable and ethical tourism to the islands, as well as ethical consumption of sustainable fishing products which do not harm the ecosystem beyond repair. In that regard, the promotion of environmental awareness and recognition of the Galapagos Islands as a Natural World Heritage Site for humanity is crucial. For as stated by in the preamble of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, “deterioration or disappearance of any item of the cultural or natural heritage constitutes a harmful impoverishment of the heritage of all the nations of the world”. Only together can these collective goals be reached.

mentioning that since 1959, under the auspices of UNESCO, the Charles Darwin Foundation has operated on the Santa Cruz Island, with the primary objective of providing knowledge and assistance through scientific research and complementary action to ensure conservation of the environment and biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. This crucial work, carried out by Ecuadorian and international scientists is cutting edge, and dedicated to advancing these noble pursuits.

On 12 August Thai people are celebrating Mother’s Day in Thailand. To raise awareness about Thai silk overseas, the Royal Thai Embassy of the Hague and the Thai Ministry of Agriculture organized a Thai Silk Exhibition at the Floriade Expo.

Their best-known products include honey and milk tablets which are highly favoured by tourists in Thailand. Every year the Queen’s Foundation will host exhibitions of such products in shopping malls which will allow the public to access local goods, fresh fruits and vegetables. Next time on your trip to Thailand, you can see if you can spot these brands from the royal projects and try some of their products.

On August 13 at the Floriade Expo, there was a cultural exhibition on Thai silk and the exhibition of the Celebration of the Birthday of H.M. Queen Sirikit and also a demonstration on silk reeling by the Queen Sirikit Department of Sericulture. There were some cultural performances and a beautiful Thai fabrics fashion show. Thai silk is one of the many cultural products in Thailand which is widely sought after as a luxury textile. Though a common commodity for locals, silk threads would require at least 3 arduous months to produce. From harvesting cocoons to weaving the fabric on the loom, creating a beautiful sarong is no easy feat. This meant that Thai silk has had to undergo a series of transformations which were necessary to ensure its continued quality and relevance in modern Thailand.

Queen Sirikit has been a dedicated advocate for Thailand’s traditional arts and crafts throughout her reign which began in the mid-20th century. As an international fashion icon, the Queen had the ambition to make Thai silk a product of luxury. This was an opportune timing as the textile industry at the end of the Second World War in Thailand was a scattered and unorganized network of workers that produced varying standards, quantities, and patterns of Thai silk. Thai people at the time also perceived silk as an uncomfortable material which was more expensive to acquire, as well as more niche to the upper echelons of society. In this regard, Thai silk had to be elevated and given new life as a fine art which people longed to wear. Hence Queen Sirikit set out to meet the sericulturists of the Northeastern provinces of Thailand in order to fulfil her vision.

The Ambassador of Thailand, H.E. Chatri Archjananun gave a warm welcome to all the guests and mentioned that it is a great pleasure to celebrate Her Majesty, the Queen Mother’s 90th Birthday here at the Floriade Festival in Almere. They regard 12 August as the national Mother’s Day as well as National Thai Textiles Day. Today’s festivities are devoted to honoring Her Majesty’s lifelong achievement in revitalizing Thai silk production and ensuring the preservation of sericulture in Thailand. Her hard work and dedication have empowered textile workers and elevated their handcrafts to excel in the world stage.

The Queen’s silk project became a longterm process which would continue throughout the entirety of the Queen’s life. Her field work began with a largescale sampling of Thai silk products around different parts of the country in an effort to standardize textile production. The Queen would also take it upon herself to buy and compare as many textiles as possible to better understand the drawbacks of the silk industry. This was aided by the great number of gifts and tapestry work which villagers would bestow upon the Queen in their delight at her arrival. Through a system of trial and error, the Queen was able to provide vendors and textile workers educational advice and feedback for improving sales of Thai silk. One of the leading examples of the Queen’s feedback was the production of larger quantities of a material which was typically used to weave sashes. Her Majesty noticed that the material was of higher quality, and encouraged workers to build larger looms to weave larger quantities of the sash material to make other garments. To increase the production of silk, the Queen also undertook the initiative to start the Queen Sirikit Department of Sericulture and the Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (SACIT)

By financially supporting royal projects that continue to propel and support local farmers, the Queen has also enabled communities to raise their income and continue sustaining their livelihoods with their inherited skillset. To ensure that such methods are also enhanced with new technologies and research, the Queen’s agricultural foundations continues to

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit has also undertaken further projects to safeguard other declining traditions in Thailand. She has also played an active role in preserving traditional farming methods by collecting and passing on knowledge about native species of plants and crops.

Jim Thompson’s opening of the Thai Silk Company in 1948 also supported the unification of textile workers in Thailand and allowed the further promotion of Thai fabrics in the international market. Female workers who produced fabrics for Thompson were able to continue producing textile products from home and continue to make a living despite living in separate locations. At around this time, the Queen was also working with leading designers to create the modern Thai Chakri dress which became the identity of traditional Thai attire. Her international appearances in silks that have also been refashioned by Balmain led to a spike in demand for Thai textiles. Queen Sirikit and Thompson’s efforts to rebrand and enhance Thai silks have therefore been key to the preservation of the livelihoods of Thai weavers. Today Jim Thompson continues to operate as an iconic brand in Thailand that produces intricate neck ties, scarves, and luxury silk products. Thai textiles have also made its way into a new fashion trend in recent years due to the incorporation of traditional Thai patterns into materials used to make everyday office attire. The Thai women now sport various designs of Thai fabrics for blazers, dresses, and accessories to work. At temples, you can also observe more women pairing sarongs with a plain t-shirt with traditional accessories such as a silver belt. While such prints were once seen as outdated, this new form of attire has become a symbol of pride of one’s cultural heritage. Queen Sirikit’s iconic silk wardrobe is also now on display at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok which is open for the public.

However, dissociation is not always accompanied by terror. For some, it invites nothing more than a kind of existential romanticism. In its milder forms, it can feel like you are watching your life from afar or as though it is a movie. oignantly, transient dissociative episodes are a normal phenomenon during childhood. The belief that this body is mine is something we learn during our developmental years. Thus, breaks in that link are far more frequent when the belief is not so ingrained. It is only when it returns as an adult that it can acquire its uncanny and frightening dimension.

ander ogaerts was born in San icolaas, ruba, in 1 2, and from a young age he and his twin brother, Jair, were playing baseball on the island and throughout various youth leagues in the aribbean. He came from very humble beginnings his mother raised her sons by herself after their father left at a very young age, and though it was very difficult, she instilled a sense of responsibility, accountability and maturity in her twin sons that helped them become mature athletes. When the duo were in their teens, a oston Red Sox scout spotted Jair playing and was interested in his skills. Jair actually told the scout that if he liked what he saw in his own abilities, he should check out his brother. The scout followed Jair s advice and long story short signed ander to a contract that included a 10,000 sign on bonus. Jair also signed with the Red Sox but was traded to the hicago ubs prior to the 2012 season.

Dissociation as an alienation effect Famous Scottish psychiatrist R. . aing argued that partial depersonalisation and dissociation are normal, even inevitable, consequences of 20th century alienation. For aing, most relationships are built on a kind of depersonalisation insofar as we do not acknowledge every human we interact with as who they are, but rather as another actor in a larger machine.

What can dissociation teach us about the modern day?

However, when that disconnect is directed inwards such that an element of someone s own self rather than a piece of their reality becomes strange to them then they could be in a transient dissociation. Essentially, we become alienated from ourselves, as if we were also strangers on the street.

And how does it relate to our modern world?

I cannot help but think the increase in dissociative experiences is tied up with our ever evolving online identities and their emphasis on self reference. Firstly, countless studies show that excessive internet, virtual reality or social media use drastically increases your likelihood of experiencing a dissociation. For example, our image in the mirror enables us to perceive ourselves through someone else s eyes. ut now, we have this image in the screen, void of any corporality, doing the same. Secondly, we are quite literally connecting with people via parts of a machine. Thirdly, frequent transient dissociation is correlated with perfectionism and is often provoked by the fear that one has made a mistake. Those mistakes tend to take the form of not fully knowing ourselves or being in control of how others perceive us. The self reference and self-awareness that saturates social media could well be a breeding ground for these kinds of anxieties. Now what? However, this is not to say that we should all ust ump ship there is plenty to be said about why our technology is a wonderful thing. ut I think if my dissociative experiences taught me anything, it is to lean into the idea that you do not need to know who you are, which is an idea that online personas tend to discourage. Inconsistency doesn t make for great branding, but we are not Instead, brands. try to lean into the idea that our identity will always be in flux, and links will sometimes need to be broken. I think I repeatedly experienced these episodes because that notion that I can never really be certain of anything at all was precisely what I needed to learn.

What is transient dissociation?

Disclaimer: In this article, transient dissociation is used in a generalised sense and as a standalone experience. I am not referring to the traumaspecific symptoms of I or . It would come on suddenly. I could be walking along the road thinking all sorts of to do list things, and then, out of nowhere, my innate belief that these feet are mine would be thrown into crisis. y vision would blur, and my balance would be like I was sailing a ship through stormy water. If I was sitting down, it localised in my eyes. I would have to act against a heaviness that felt like something was pulling me downwards. y mind would start to spin, and I could not take in any more information from the outside world. I repeatedly blinked during these episodes and envisioned my eyes as akin to two hands holding onto a cliff edge. pparently, these episodes of blinding di iness were actually transient dissociations, and they are very common. While only 2 of the world s population are diagnosed with depersonalisationderealisation disorder or if there were ever a diagnostic onomatopoeia, it is that) transient dissociation occurs in about half of the world s population.

Transient dissociation occurs when someone feels as though the continuity between things has come undone. Those things tend to revolve around one s thoughts, feelings and behaviours. The disconnect then manifests as a split between one s body, mind and surroundings. In the story above, the dissociative dimension would be that I lost the feeling that my mind and feet are connected. However, I would rationally know that they are connected. So, that dissociation would then trigger a subsequent over analysing of how I move my feet, which would create a sense of bodily alienation and lead to panic. It is akin to what happens when you repeat a word too many times.

I recommend a new expat learn the basics of the language as this will help in the first few months of living here. dditionally, if they plan to live here for the long term (after their studies for example), it would help to know the language as it is very difficult to find an English speaking ob if you are not located in the Randstad. Apart from that, I recommend they take each day at a time and try to find other expats who can relate to their ourney here, as homesickness is a reality. I would suggest joining expat groups on Facebook to find other expats in their current city.

I am currently working as a B2B journalist. Additionally, I am a content creator and recently launched my website called plantingsoulseeds.com – where I discuss life-related topics through videos, podcasts and articles. When as the first time o ere in the etherlands? Was it n? Was it an adventure? I moved to the Netherlands in September 2016. To be honest, it was nerveracking at first, but looking back I am glad I took that leap of faith and believed in myself and my life journey. I had never visited the Netherlands before my move and so it took a few months to adjust to the new environment, people and culture. Moving to a different part of the world on your own (no family) can be challenging, especially at the age of 19, but I had lived in the UK for over a year before coming here, so that made the transition a little smoother.

Up the barricades

The second part of the exhibition is the area in the center of the hall, which serves as a laboratory, ooms in on themes which are intrinsically linked to the city, but which in the past were left out of the main narrative about msterdam either deliberately covered up or overlooked. Inside and outside relate to each other, creating striking and surprising intersections.

On the eve of the twentieth century, there is unrest in society. Women are revolting against their disadvantaged position and are increasingly moving into traditionally masculine fields. They want the right to vote and a paid ob. They throw off their cramped corsets and exchange their knitting for the bicycle, the tennis racket or the dance bar. The emancipated woman in her many manifestations initially shakes the existing order to its foundations. She receives a lot of criticism, especially from those who are not keen on radical changes in the standard male female relations.

In the first part of the exhibition, the outer wall displays a chronological selection of stories about the city. You really walk through msterdam s past and get a sense of how the city and its residents developed. This includes ma or, influential events, reflecting on how the city was seen at that particular time and how this is manifested in the museum s collection.

The spotlight is on the modern woman in a wide variety of forms. We see women who go up the barricades, enter new fields of work, create masterpieces, build collections, light a cigarette, stroll with their short haircut or ump on a bicycle. Women who time and again challenge the ideas of what is typically feminine or masculine at that time, who break with conventions and fight for their right to make their own choices. From proponents of women s suffrage around 1 00 to champions of the sexual liberation of women in the 1 0s, and from the first female nurses to early art collectors and museum directors.

Main attractions: the Food Court, the Cooking Theatre and famous chefs Good food and drinks remain one of the main attractions of the Tong Tong Fair. The Cooking Theatre is unique, with its daily cooking demonstrations by professional and hobby chefs, including tasting sessions afterwards.

“After two cancelled editions due to Covid, we are happy and relieved that during this 62nd edition, lovers of Southeast Asian cultures can meet again,” said Siem Boon, director of Tong Tong Fair. “The ‘live’ encounters at the Tong Tong Fair give a special feeling that cannot be explained and cannot be found online. People who do not go on holiday this year can still go on a holiday to Southeast Asia during their staycation in The Hague. The wide range of participating artists and exhibitors from Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, makes the Tong Tong Fair unique. The hospitable atmosphere ensures that young and old, East and West feel welcome. That explains partly why we have so many visitors each year, visitors who stay for more than one day in The Hague to be part of the Tong Tong Fair. I hope that many people, like me, look forward to it again.”

The 62nd edition of the Tong Tong Fair will take place this year from 1 to 11 September. The Malieveld in The Hague is again the setting for the 11-day event, which feels like a voyage of discovery to Southeast Asia. In the iconic tents, visitors can enjoy Indisch culture (an ancient Eurasian mix of East and West) and cultures from Southeast Asia, brought by dozens of artists and stallholders. Visitors are expected from all over the Netherlands, but also from neighbouring countries.

Other highlights of the programme include the Indonesian singer Anggun, who took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for France in 2012, the renowned gamelan ensemble Widosari, demonstrations of the Indonesian martial art pencak silat, the Indonesian jazz pianist Nita Aartsen, and fashion shows by designer Joko SSP from Solo (Central Java). If you like to dance, De Rotonde (The Rotunda) is the place to be. Every day, bands and DJs play music to dance to, and there are occasional dance workshops. The area also includes a cosy terrace and picnic area to relax.

The shop might have been small, but it was genuinely impactful, unique, and unmissable. After two years, Kelly and Jason decided to relocate to a bigger store on the Zoutmanstraat and from there on, the company proliferated. It was time to expand to a new city! The next stop was Wassenaar on the Luiffelbaan. This was also where the webshop was born. However, after a few years, Kelly and Jason decided to move the store into a more prominent location, a few doors further. ext on the map was msterdam! History The relationship between Zandvoort and motorsport takes us back to the late 1930s, when racing enthusiasts decided to organize a race in Zandvoort. The 1939 race was held on a temporary street circuit. After great success, it was decided to build a permanent circuit. The first race on that circuit was held on 7 August 1948. From 1952 Zandvoort was part of the Formula 1 calendar. In the 1970s, the circuit underwent a number of adjustments, including new safety provisions. The last F1 Grand Prix took place in 1985, as the company that owned the track went out of business. In 1999 the track was extended to a full GP length of 4.3 kilometers. For the re-invented F1 Dutch Grand Prix 2021, the circuit has been adjusted on a number of points, but the unique character has remained unaffected.

Heroes of the track

The circuit CM.com Circuit Zandvoort is not only known for its legendary races and fantastic atmosphere, the Zandvoort race track is also famous for its unique location. With the beach nearby and a dream course in the Zandvoort dunes, it is a feast for every racing fan to visit CM.com Circuit Zandvoort. With a track length of 4.3 kilometers, it is one of the shorter circuits on the F1 calendar: hardly anywhere else do drivers race past the fans so often! Here you will not find endless run-off strips of asphalt, only relentless gravel pits. Any mistake on the circuit will be punished. The extremely challenging track has 14 turns and has been completely upgraded to the highest standards, while maintaining the unique character of CM.com Circuit Zandvoort.

The list of Formula 1 heroes who have driven at CM.com Circuit Zandvoort is very long. One of the most legendary races was held in 1985, when Niki Lauda had to start from 10th place but fought his way to victory. On the podium, he was flanked by two other motorsport legends: Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The win at Zandvoort was also the last GP victory in Niki Lauda’s career. A large part of the current F1 starting field has achieved success at Zandvoort in Formula 3. Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen, for example, know what it is like to win at Zandvoort. With Verstappen’s 2021 win in the new F1 Grand Prix, F1 racing is back to stay in the PositiveNetherlands.economic and social impact of the F1 Grand Prix In September 2021, the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix returned to the Netherlands. Tens of thousands of visitors traveled to CM.com Circuit Zandvoort and millions of people worldwide enjoyed it on tv or online. Friend and foe soon agreed: the event was a great success. Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) has completed a scientific study into the economic, social and societal impact of the event, which showed that the return of the event has had many positive effects on the region. Economic impact The Dutch Grand Prix has led to a lot of extra spending in Zandvoort and the region: €22.3 million in Zandvoort and €44.5 million in additional spending in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (MRA). This extra spending has created 244 jobs in Zandvoort and 498 jobs in the MRA region (including Zandvoort). It is striking that these figures, even with only two thirds of seats filled due to Covid restrictitions measures, are higher than the predictions from the Desicio survey of 2017.

Access and sustainability

The ambitious mobility plan of the Dutch Grand Prix has resulted in above-expected positive figures with regard to the sustainability requirement. The objective was to become a car-free event in three years, which was already largely achieved by 2021 with less than 5% of visitors reaching the final destination by car. Due to the distribution of visitors over various means of transport, the event remained very easily accessible and the inflow and outflow of visitors went well.
